1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Now, listen to this section on tranquility (upaśama), which is known to lead to liberation (nirvāṇa), immediately after the section on abiding (sthiti).
श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच ।
शरत्तारकिताकाशस्तिमितायां सुसंसदि ।
कथयत्येवमाह्लादि वसिष्ठे पावनं वचः ॥ २ ॥

kathayatyevamāhlādi vasiṣṭhe pāvanaṃ vacaḥ 2

श्रवणार्थित्वमौनस्थपार्थिवे संसदन्तरे ।
निर्वात इव निस्पन्दकमले कमलाकरे ॥ ३ ॥

3. Within the assembly, the king (pārthiva) sat in silent eagerness to listen, like a motionless lotus (kamala) in a lotus pond (kamalākara) in a windless place.
विलासिनीषु संशान्तमदमोहबलासु च ।
शममन्तः प्रयान्तीषु चिरप्रव्रजितास्विव ॥ ४ ॥
vilāsinīṣu saṃśāntamadamohabalāsu ca ,
śamamantaḥ prayāntīṣu cirapravrajitāsviva 4
4. vilāsinīṣu saṃśāntamadamohabalāsu ca śamam
antaḥ prayāntīṣu cirapravrajitāsu iva

4. And among the charming women, whose power stemming from arrogance (mada) and delusion (moha) was completely pacified, they were advancing towards inner tranquility, as if they had long been renunciates.
कराम्भोरुहहंसेषु लीनेषु श्रवणादिव ।
मुक्तघुर्घुरवादेषु वायसेषु तराविव ॥ ५ ॥
karāmbhoruhahaṃseṣu līneṣu śravaṇādiva ,
muktaghurghuravādeṣu vāyaseṣu tarāviva 5

5. Their lotus-like hands, resembling swans, were still, as if ceased from sound; and the crows on the tree, whose croaking had ceased, were also still, as if from hearing.
नासाग्रपरिविश्रान्ततर्जन्यङ्गुलिकोटिषु ।
विचारयत्सु विज्ञानकलां तज्ज्ञेषु राजसु ॥ ६ ॥
nāsāgrapariviśrāntatarjanyaṅgulikoṭiṣu ,
vicārayatsu vijñānakalāṃ tajjñeṣu rājasu 6

6. Among the kings (rājasu), who were experts, and whose fingertips of the index finger were resting upon the tip of the nose, pondering the skill of knowledge.
रामे विकासमायाते प्रभात इव पङ्कजे ।
परित्यक्ततमः पीठे सूर्योदय इवाम्बरे ॥ ७ ॥
rāme vikāsamāyāte prabhāta iva paṅkaje ,
parityaktatamaḥ pīṭhe sūryodaya ivāmbare 7
7. rāme vikāsam āyāte prabhāte iva paṅkaje
parityaktatamaḥpīṭhe sūryodayaḥ iva ambare
7. rāme vikāsam āyāte prabhāte paṅkaje iva
parityaktatamaḥpīṭhe ambare sūryodayaḥ iva
7. Just as a lotus blossoms forth at dawn, and like a sunrise in the sky where the realm of darkness has been completely abandoned, so too did Rama attain full development.
आकर्णयति वासिष्ठीर्गिरो दशरथे रसात् ।
कलापिनीव जीमूतनिर्ह्रादान्मुक्तवर्षणात् ॥ ८ ॥

kalāpinīva jīmūtanirhrādānmuktavarṣaṇāt 8

8. King Dasaratha eagerly listened to the words of Vasishtha, just as a peahen listens to the rumblings of rain-laden clouds.
आहृत्य सर्वभोगेभ्यो मनो मर्कटचञ्चलम् ।
श्रवणं प्रति यत्नेन सारेण मन्त्रिणि स्थिते ॥ ९ ॥
āhṛtya sarvabhogebhyo mano markaṭacañcalam ,
śravaṇaṃ prati yatnena sāreṇa mantriṇi sthite 9
9. āhṛtya sarvabhogebhyaḥ manaḥ markaṭacañcalam
śravaṇam prati yatnena sāreṇa mantriṇi sthite
9. markaṭacañcalam manaḥ sarvabhogebhyaḥ āhṛtya,
mantriṇi yatnena sāreṇa śravaṇam prati sthite
9. Having withdrawn his inherently fickle mind, which is restless like a monkey, from all objects of enjoyment, the attentive listener (Rama) remained steadfast, diligently focused on the essence of the teachings.
वसिष्ठोक्त्या परिज्ञातस्वात्मनीन्दुकलामले ।
लक्ष्मणे विलसल्लक्ष्ये शिक्षावलविचक्षणे ॥ १० ॥
vasiṣṭhoktyā parijñātasvātmanīndukalāmale ,
lakṣmaṇe vilasallakṣye śikṣāvalavicakṣaṇe 10
10. vasiṣṭhoktyā parijñātasvātmani indukalāmale
lakṣmaṇe vilasatlakṣye śikṣābalavicakṣaṇe
10. vasiṣṭhoktyā parijñātasvātmani indukalāmale
vilasatlakṣye śikṣābalavicakṣaṇe lakṣmaṇe
10. In Lakshmana, whose true self (ātman) was fully realized through the teachings of Vasishtha, who was as pure as a digit of the moon, whose objectives were clearly manifest, and who was skilled in the power of the teachings.
शत्रुघ्ने शत्रुदलने चेतसा पूर्णतां गते ।
अलमानन्दमायाते राकाचन्द्रोपमे स्थिते ॥ ११ ॥
śatrughne śatrudalane cetasā pūrṇatāṃ gate ,
alamānandamāyāte rākācandropame sthite 11

11. When Shatrughna, the vanquisher of foes, his mind (cetas) having reached completeness and having attained immense joy, remained like the full moon.
सुमित्रे मित्रतां याते मानसे दुःखशीलिते ।
विकासिहृदये जाते तत्काल इव पंकजे ॥ १२ ॥
sumitre mitratāṃ yāte mānase duḥkhaśīlite ,
vikāsihṛdaye jāte tatkāla iva paṃkaje 12
12. sumitre mitratām yāte mānase duḥkhaśīlite
vikāsihṛdaye jāte tatkāle iva paṅkaje

12. When, in Sumitra, whose mind (manas) was accustomed to sorrow, friendliness was attained, and her blossoming heart (hṛdaya) opened like a lotus at that very moment.
तत्रस्थेषु तथान्येषु तदा मुनिषु राजसु ।
सुधौतचित्तरत्नेषु प्रोल्लसत्स्विव चेतसा ॥ १३ ॥
tatrastheṣu tathānyeṣu tadā muniṣu rājasu ,
sudhautacittaratneṣu prollasatsviva cetasā 13
13. tatrasthyeṣu tathā anyeṣu tadā muniṣu rājasu
sudhautacittaratneṣu prollasatsu iva cetasā
13. tadā tatrasthyeṣu tathā anyeṣu muniṣu rājasu
sudhautacittaratneṣu cetasā iva prollasatsu
13. Then, among those sages and kings present there, and others, whose mind (citta) was like a well-purified jewel, they seemed to glow by means of their consciousness (cetas).
उदभूत्पूरयन्नाशाः कल्पाभ्ररवमांसलः ।
अथ मध्याह्नशंखानामब्धिघोषसमः स्वनः ॥ १४ ॥
udabhūtpūrayannāśāḥ kalpābhraravamāṃsalaḥ ,
atha madhyāhnaśaṃkhānāmabdhighoṣasamaḥ svanaḥ 14
14. udabhūt pūrayan āśāḥ kalpābhraravāmāṃsalaḥ
atha madhyāhnaśaṅkhānām abdhighoṣasamaḥ svanaḥ
14. atha kalpābhraravāmāṃsalaḥ abdhighoṣasamaḥ
madhyāhnaśaṅkhānām svanaḥ āśāḥ pūrayan udabhūt
14. Then, a sound (svana) arose, filling the directions, mighty as the roar of deluge clouds, and resembling the conch-sound of the ocean at midday.
महता तेन शब्देन तिरोधानं मुनेर्गिरः ।
ययर्जलदनादेन कोकिलध्वनयो यथा ॥ १५ ॥
mahatā tena śabdena tirodhānaṃ munergiraḥ ,
yayarjaladanādena kokiladhvanayo yathā 15
15. mahatā tena śabdena tirodhānam muneḥ giraḥ
yayau jaladanādena kokiladhvanayaḥ yathā
15. tena mahatā śabdena muneḥ giraḥ tirodhānam
yayau yathā jaladanādena kokiladhvanayaḥ
15. That great sound caused the sage's words to disappear, just as the booming sound of thunder (jaladanāda) overwhelms the calls of cuckoos.
मुनिरन्तरयांचक्रे स्वां वाचमथ संसदि ।
जितसारो गुणः केन महता समुदीर्यते ॥ १६ ॥
munirantarayāṃcakre svāṃ vācamatha saṃsadi ,
jitasāro guṇaḥ kena mahatā samudīryate 16
16. muniḥ antarayāṃcakre svām vācam atha saṃsadi
jitasāraḥ guṇaḥ kena mahatā samudīryate
16. atha muniḥ svām vācam saṃsadi antarayāṃcakre.
jitasāraḥ guṇaḥ kena mahatā samudīryate?
16. Then the sage (muni) ceased his own speech in the assembly. For by what great (power or sound) can a quality whose essence has been vanquished be effectively proclaimed?
मुहूर्तमात्रं विश्रम्य श्रुत्वा मध्याह्ननिःस्वनम् ।
घने कोलाहले शान्ते रामं मुनिरुवाच ह ॥ १७ ॥
muhūrtamātraṃ viśramya śrutvā madhyāhnaniḥsvanam ,
ghane kolāhale śānte rāmaṃ muniruvāca ha 17
17. muhūrtamātram viśramya śrutvā madhyāhnaniḥsvanam
ghane kolāhale śānte rāmam muniḥ uvāca ha
17. muniḥ muhūrtamātram viśramya,
madhyāhnaniḥsvanam śrutvā,
ghane kolāhale śānte,
rāmam uvāca ha
17. After resting for just a moment and having heard the midday clamor, when that dense uproar had subsided, the sage (muni) then spoke to Rama.
रामाद्यतनमेतावदाह्णिकं कथितं मया ।
प्रातरन्यत्तु वक्ष्यामो वक्तव्यमरिमर्दन ॥ १८ ॥
rāmādyatanametāvadāhṇikaṃ kathitaṃ mayā ,
prātaranyattu vakṣyāmo vaktavyamarimardana 18
18. rāma adyatanam etāvat āhṇikam kathitam mayā
prātaḥ anyat tu vakṣyāmaḥ vaktavyam arimardana
18. rāma,
arimardana! adyatanam etāvat āhṇikam mayā kathitam.
prātaḥ tu anyat vaktavyam vakṣyāmaḥ.
18. O Rama, O vanquisher of foes (arimardana)! This much of today's daily account (āhṇika) has been recounted by me. Tomorrow morning, however, we shall speak of other matters that are to be told.
इदं नियतितः प्राप्तं कर्तव्यं तद्विजन्मनाम् ।
मध्याह्नमुपपन्नं यत्कर्तव्यं नावसीदति ॥ १९ ॥
idaṃ niyatitaḥ prāptaṃ kartavyaṃ tadvijanmanām ,
madhyāhnamupapannaṃ yatkartavyaṃ nāvasīdati 19
19. idam niyatitaḥ prāptam kartavyam tat dvijanmanām
madhyāhnam upapannam yat kartavyam na avasīdati
19. dvijanmanām niyatitaḥ prāptam idam tat kartavyam
yat madhyāhnam upapannam kartavyam na avasīdati
19. This duty, obtained by natural law (niyati), is for the twice-born (dvija) and must be performed. A duty that arises at midday should not be neglected.
त्वमप्युत्तिष्ठ सुभग समस्ताचारसत्क्रियाम् ।
आचराचारचतुरस्नानदानार्चनादिकाम् ॥ २० ॥
tvamapyuttiṣṭha subhaga samastācārasatkriyām ,
ācarācāracaturasnānadānārcanādikām 20
20. tvam api uttiṣṭha subhaga samasta ācāra satkriyām
ācara ācāra catura snāna dāna arcanā ādikām
20. subhaga tvam api uttiṣṭha.
ācāra catura snāna dāna arcanā ādikām samasta ācāra satkriyām ācara.
20. You too, O fortunate one, arise! Perform all the proper and auspicious rituals, such as bathing, giving (dāna), and worship, in which you are skilled.
इत्युक्त्वा मुनिरुत्तस्थौ समं दशरथः प्रभुः ।
ससदाः सेन्दुरादित्य उदयाद्रितटादिव ॥ २१ ॥
ityuktvā muniruttasthau samaṃ daśarathaḥ prabhuḥ ,
sasadāḥ sendurāditya udayādritaṭādiva 21
21. iti uktvā muniḥ uttasthau samam daśarathaḥ prabhuḥ
sasadāḥ sa indu ādityaḥ udaya adri taṭāt iva
21. iti uktvā muniḥ uttasthau.
prabhuḥ daśarathaḥ samam sasadāḥ sa indu ādityaḥ udaya adri taṭāt iva.
21. Having spoken thus, the sage stood up. Lord Daśaratha (prabhu) also rose, just as the planets (sadas), the moon, and the sun rise from the slopes of the eastern mountain.
तयोरुत्तिष्ठतो सर्वा सभोत्थातुमकम्पत ।
मन्दवातपरामृष्टा नलिनीवालिलोचना ॥ २२ ॥
tayoruttiṣṭhato sarvā sabhotthātumakampata ,
mandavātaparāmṛṣṭā nalinīvālilocanā 22
22. tayoḥ uttiṣṭhatoḥ sarvā sabhā utthātum akampata
manda vāta parāmṛṣṭā nalinī iva āli locanā
22. tayoḥ uttiṣṭhatoḥ sarvā sabhā utthātum akampata,
mandavātaparāmṛṣṭā āli locanā nalinī iva.
22. As those two rose, the entire assembly (sabhā) trembled as if to rise, like a lotus pond whose many lotuses were stirred by a gentle breeze.
उत्तस्थौ सावतंसोत्थभृंगमण्डलमण्डिता ।
करिसेनेव सन्ध्याद्रावालोलकरपुष्करा ॥ २३ ॥
uttasthau sāvataṃsotthabhṛṃgamaṇḍalamaṇḍitā ,
kariseneva sandhyādrāvālolakarapuṣkarā 23
23. uttasthau sāvatansotthabhṛṅgamaṇḍalamaṇḍitā
kari-senā iva sandhyādrāvālola-karapuṣkarā
23. sā avataṃsa-uttha-bhṛṅga-maṇḍala-maṇḍitā uttasthau
kari-senā iva sandhyādrāvālola-karapuṣkarā
23. She arose, adorned by swarms of bees stirred up by her ear-ornaments, just like an army of elephants with their swaying trunks appearing like the reddish glow of twilight.
परस्परांगसंघट्टचूर्णितांगदमण्डली ।
रत्नपूर्णारुणाम्भोदसन्ध्यासमयसूचनी ॥ २४ ॥
parasparāṃgasaṃghaṭṭacūrṇitāṃgadamaṇḍalī ,
ratnapūrṇāruṇāmbhodasandhyāsamayasūcanī 24
24. parasparāṅga-saṅghaṭṭa-cūrṇitāṅgada-maṇḍalī
ratna-pūrṇāruṇāmboda-sandhyā-samaya-sūcanī
24. sā parasparāṅga-saṅghaṭṭa-cūrṇitāṅgada-maṇḍalī
ratna-pūrṇāruṇāmboda-sandhyā-samaya-sūcanī
24. She was one whose multitude of armlets were crushed by the collision of her own limbs, and who announced the arrival of twilight, like reddish clouds filled with jewels.
पतदुत्तंसविभ्रान्तभृंगोपहितघुंघुमा ।
मुकुटोद्दामविद्योतशक्रचापीकृताम्वरा ॥ २५ ॥
pataduttaṃsavibhrāntabhṛṃgopahitaghuṃghumā ,
mukuṭoddāmavidyotaśakracāpīkṛtāmvarā 25
25. patad-uttaṃsa-vibhrānta-bhṛṅgopahita-ghuṅghumā
mukuṭo-ddāma-vidyota-śakra-cāpīkṛtāmbarā
25. sā patad-uttaṃsa-vibhrānta-bhṛṅgopahita-ghuṅghumā
mukuṭo-ddāma-vidyota-śakra-cāpīkṛtāmbarā
25. She was one whose swaying ear-ornaments caused a humming sound from whirling bees, and whose sky (or surroundings) was transformed into a rainbow by the unrestrained brilliance of her crown.
कान्तालताहस्तदलचारुचामरमंजरी ।
वनलेखेव विक्षुब्धवरवारणमण्डला ॥ २६ ॥
kāntālatāhastadalacārucāmaramaṃjarī ,
vanalekheva vikṣubdhavaravāraṇamaṇḍalā 26
26. kāntā-latā-hasta-dala-cāru-cāmara-mañjarī
vana-lekhā iva vikṣubdha-vara-vāraṇa-maṇḍalā
26. sā kāntā-latā-hasta-dala-cāru-cāmara-mañjarī
vana-lekhā iva vikṣubdha-vara-vāraṇa-maṇḍalā
26. She was one whose beautiful clusters of whisks, held in her charming, creeper-like, petal-like hands, resembled a forest grove with a host of agitated, excellent elephants.
कचत्कटकभारक्तीकृतान्योन्यतताम्बरा ।
वातव्याधूतपुष्पेव मन्दारवनमालिका ॥ २७ ॥
kacatkaṭakabhāraktīkṛtānyonyatatāmbarā ,
vātavyādhūtapuṣpeva mandāravanamālikā 27
27. kacatkaṭakabhāraktykṛtānyonyatatāmbarā
vātavyādhūtapuṣpā iva mandāravanamālikā
27. mandāravanamālikā kacatkaṭakabhāraktykṛtānyonyatatāmbarā

27. Like a garland of Mandāra (celestial coral tree) trees, whose mutually stretched canopy is made active by the weight of its glittering sections, and whose flowers are swayed by the wind.
कर्पूरकणनीहाररचितामलवारिदा ।
शरहिक्तटमालेव प्रसृताशेषभूमिका ॥ २८ ॥
karpūrakaṇanīhāraracitāmalavāridā ,
śarahiktaṭamāleva prasṛtāśeṣabhūmikā 28
28. karpūrakanaṇnīhāraracitāmalavāridā
śaratsiktataṭamālā iva prasṛtāśeṣabhūmikā
28. prasṛtāśeṣabhūmikā karpūrakanaṇnīhāraracitāmalavāridā

28. Whose pure clouds are formed of particles of camphor and mist, and who is like a garland of banks moistened in autumn, (she is) the one whose entire manifestation is spread out.
लोलमौलिमणिप्रान्तपाटलाम्बरकोटरा ।
संध्येवाफुल्लनीलाला कार्यसंहारकारिणी ॥ २९ ॥
lolamaulimaṇiprāntapāṭalāmbarakoṭarā ,
saṃdhyevāphullanīlālā kāryasaṃhārakāriṇī 29
29. lolamaulimaṇiprāntapāṭalāmbarakoṭarā
sandhyā iva āphullanīlālā kāryasaṃhārakāriṇī

29. Like the twilight (sandhyā) that brings about the cessation of activities, (she is) whose pale-reddened sky-cavity (horizon) is marked by the swaying edges of crown-gems, and (she is) with fully bloomed dark-blue curls.
रत्नांशुसलिलापूरमुखपद्मनिरन्तरा ।
पद्मिनीवालिवलिता नूपुरारवसारसा ॥ ३० ॥
ratnāṃśusalilāpūramukhapadmanirantarā ,
padminīvālivalitā nūpurāravasārasā 30
30. ratnāṃśusalilāpūramukhapadmanirantarā

30. (She is) like a woman resembling a lotus (padminī), whose lotus-face is continuously radiant with a flood of jewel-like rays, and who is surrounded by rows, where the sounds of her ankle-bells are like the cries of cranes.
संतता सा सभोत्तस्थौ भूभृच्छतसमाकुला ।
भूतसंततिसंभ्रान्ता सृष्टिर्नवमिवोदिता ॥ ३१ ॥
saṃtatā sā sabhottasthau bhūbhṛcchatasamākulā ,
bhūtasaṃtatisaṃbhrāntā sṛṣṭirnavamivoditā 31
31. santatā sā sabhā uttasthau bhūbhṛcchatasamākulā
bhūtasaṃtatisambhrāntā sṛṣṭiḥ navam iva uditā
31. sā santatā sabhā bhūbhṛcchatasamākulā
bhūtasaṃtatisambhrāntā uttasthau sṛṣṭiḥ navam iva uditā
31. That vast assembly stood up, teeming with hundreds of kings, appearing bewildered by the multitude of creatures, as if a new creation had just come into being.
प्रणम्याथ नृपं भूपा निर्ययुर्नृपमन्दिरात् ।
शक्रचापीकृता रत्नैरम्बुधेरिववीचयः ॥ ३२ ॥
praṇamyātha nṛpaṃ bhūpā niryayurnṛpamandirāt ,
śakracāpīkṛtā ratnairambudherivavīcayaḥ 32
32. praṇamya atha nṛpam bhūpā niryayuḥ nṛpamandirāt
śakracāpīkṛtā ratnaiḥ ambudheḥ iva vīcayaḥ
32. atha bhūpāḥ nṛpam praṇamya nṛpamandirāt niryayuḥ
ratnaiḥ śakracāpīkṛtāḥ ambudheḥ vīcayaḥ iva
32. Then, having saluted the king, the rulers departed from the royal palace, resembling ocean waves made into rainbows by their jewels.
सुमन्त्रो मन्त्रिणश्चैव वसिष्ठमथ भूमिपम् ।
प्रणम्य जग्मुः स्नानाय रसविज्ञानकोविदाः ॥ ३३ ॥
sumantro mantriṇaścaiva vasiṣṭhamatha bhūmipam ,
praṇamya jagmuḥ snānāya rasavijñānakovidāḥ 33
33. sumantraḥ mantriṇaḥ ca eva vasiṣṭham atha bhūmipam
praṇamya jagmuḥ snānāya rasavijñānakovidāḥ
33. atha sumantraḥ ca eva mantriṇaḥ rasavijñānakovidāḥ
vasiṣṭham bhūmipam praṇamya snānāya jagmuḥ
33. Then Sumantra and the other ministers, who were adept in the science of essences, having saluted Vaśiṣṭha and the king, proceeded to bathe.
वामदेवादयश्चान्ये विश्वामित्रादयस्तथा ।
वसिष्ठं पुरतः कृत्वा तस्थुरावर्जनोन्मुखाः ॥ ३४ ॥
vāmadevādayaścānye viśvāmitrādayastathā ,
vasiṣṭhaṃ purataḥ kṛtvā tasthurāvarjanonmukhāḥ 34
34. vāmadevādayaḥ ca anye viśvāmitrādayaḥ tathā
vasiṣṭham purataḥ kṛtvā tasthuḥ āvarjanonmukhāḥ
34. ca anye vāmadevādayaḥ tathā viśvāmitrādayaḥ
vasiṣṭham purataḥ kṛtvā āvarjanonmukhāḥ tasthuḥ
34. And other sages, such as Vāmadeva, and similarly Viśvāmitra and others, having placed Vaśiṣṭha at the forefront, stood ready to offer their respectful salutations.
राजा दशरथस्तत्र पूजयित्वा मुनिव्रजम् ।
तद्विसृष्टो जगामाथ स्वकार्यार्थमरिन्दमः ॥ ३५ ॥
rājā daśarathastatra pūjayitvā munivrajam ,
tadvisṛṣṭo jagāmātha svakāryārthamarindamaḥ 35
35. rājā daśarathaḥ tatra pūjayitvā munivrajam tat
visṛṣṭaḥ jagāma atha svakāryārtham arindamaḥ
35. arindamaḥ rājā daśarathaḥ tatra munivrajam
pūjayitvā tat visṛṣṭaḥ atha svakāryārtham jagāma
35. King Dasharatha, the subjugator of enemies, having honored the assembly of sages there and then dismissed by them, departed for his own affairs.
वनं वनास्पदा जग्मुर्व्योम व्योमनिवासिनः ।
नगरं नागराश्चैव प्रातरागमनाय ते ॥ ३६ ॥
vanaṃ vanāspadā jagmurvyoma vyomanivāsinaḥ ,
nagaraṃ nāgarāścaiva prātarāgamanāya te 36
36. vanam vanāspadāḥ jagmuḥ vyoma vyomanivāsinaḥ
nagaram nāgarāḥ ca eva prātar āgamanāya te
36. te vanāspadāḥ vanam jagmuḥ vyomanivāsinaḥ
vyoma nāgarāḥ ca eva nagaram prātar āgamanāya
36. The forest dwellers returned to the forest, the sky dwellers to the sky, and the city dwellers to the city, all of them intending to return in the morning.
महीपतिवसिष्ठाभ्यां प्रणयात्प्रार्थितः प्रभुः ।
वसिष्ठसद्मनि निशां विश्वामित्रोऽत्यवाहयत् ॥ ३७ ॥
mahīpativasiṣṭhābhyāṃ praṇayātprārthitaḥ prabhuḥ ,
vasiṣṭhasadmani niśāṃ viśvāmitro'tyavāhayat 37
37. mahīpativaśiṣṭābhyām praṇayāt prārthitaḥ prabhuḥ
vaśiṣṭhasadmani niśām viśvāmitraḥ atyavāhayat
37. mahīpativaśiṣṭābhyām praṇayāt prārthitaḥ prabhuḥ
viśvāmitraḥ vaśiṣṭhasadmani niśām atyavāhayat
37. Requested affectionately by the king and Vasishtha, the lord (Vishwamitra) spent the night in Vasishtha's dwelling.
वसिष्ठः सह विप्रेन्द्रैः पार्थिवैर्मुनिभिस्तथा ।
उपास्यमानो रामाद्यैः सर्वैर्दशरथात्मजैः ॥ ३८ ॥
vasiṣṭhaḥ saha viprendraiḥ pārthivairmunibhistathā ,
upāsyamāno rāmādyaiḥ sarvairdaśarathātmajaiḥ 38
38. vaśiṣṭhaḥ saha viprendraiḥ pārthivaiḥ munibhiḥ
tathā upāsyamānaḥ rāmādyaiḥ sarvaiḥ daśarathātmajaiḥ
38. vaśiṣṭhaḥ viprendraiḥ pārthivaiḥ munibhiḥ tathā saha,
rāmādyaiḥ sarvaiḥ daśarathātmajaiḥ upāsyamānaḥ
38. Vasishtha, along with the foremost brahmins, kings, and sages, was being attended by Rama and all the other sons of Dasharatha.
जगाम स्वाश्रमं श्रीमान्सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः ।
अनुयातः सुरौघेन ब्रह्मलोकमिवाब्जजः ॥ ३९ ॥
jagāma svāśramaṃ śrīmānsarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ ,
anuyātaḥ suraughena brahmalokamivābjajaḥ 39
39. jagāma svāśramam śrīmān sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ
anuyātaḥ suraughena brahmalokam iva abjajaḥ
39. śrīmān sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ svāśramam jagāma
suraughena anuyātaḥ abjajaḥ brahmalokam iva
39. The revered and glorious one, honored by all beings, went to his own hermitage, accompanied by a host of gods, just as Brahma (abjaja) goes to the world of Brahma (brahmaloka).
तस्मात्प्रदेशाद्रामादीन्पुनर्दशरथात्मजान् ।
सर्वान्विसर्जयामास पादोपान्ते नतानसौ ॥ ४० ॥
tasmātpradeśādrāmādīnpunardaśarathātmajān ,
sarvānvisarjayāmāsa pādopānte natānasau 40
40. tasmāt pradeśāt rāmādīn punar daśarathātmajān
sarvān visarjayāmāsa pādopānte natān asau
40. asau tasmāt pradeśāt punar pādopānte natān
sarvān daśarathātmajān rāmādīn visarjayāmāsa
40. From that place, he then dismissed all those sons of Dasharatha, led by Rama, who were prostrated at his feet.
नभश्चरान्धरणिचरानधश्चरान्विसृज्य संस्तुतगुणगोचरांश्च तान् ।
यथाक्रमं स्वगृहमुदारसत्त्ववांश्चकार तां द्विजजनवासरक्रियाम् ॥ ४१ ॥
nabhaścarāndharaṇicarānadhaścarānvisṛjya saṃstutaguṇagocarāṃśca tān ,
yathākramaṃ svagṛhamudārasattvavāṃścakāra tāṃ dvijajanavāsarakriyām 41
41. nabhaścarān dharaṇicarān adhaścarān
visṛjya saṃstutaguṇagocarān ca tān
yathākramam svagṛham udārasattvavān
ca cakāra tām dvijajanavāsarakriyām
41. udārasattvavān nabhaścarān dharaṇicarān
adhaścarān ca saṃstutaguṇagocarān
tān visṛjya yathākramam svagṛham
tām dvijajanavāsarakriyām cakāra
41. Having dismissed all those - the sky-dwellers, earth-dwellers, and underworld-dwellers, whose esteemed qualities were recognized by all - that noble-hearted one, in due order, returned to his hermitage (svagṛham) and performed the daily rituals proper for a Brahmin (dvija-jana).
