ततः शिखिध्वजो राजा तत्त्वज्ञानपदं विना ।
आजगाम परं मोहं तमोन्धत्वमिवाप्रजाः ॥ १ ॥

tataḥ śikhidhvajo rājā tattvajñānapadaṃ vinā ,
ājagāma paraṃ mohaṃ tamondhatvamivāprajāḥ 1
1. śrī vasiṣṭha uvāca tataḥ śikhidhvajaḥ rājā tattvajñānapadam
vinā ājagāma param moham tamaḥ andhatvam iva aprajāḥ
1. śrī vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca.
tataḥ rājā śikhidhvajaḥ tattvajñānapadam vinā,
aprajāḥ iva tamaḥ andhatvam param moham ājagāma.
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, King Śikhidhvaja, being deprived of the path to knowledge of reality, fell into a state of utter delusion, akin to the blindness of deep darkness, or like a childless person.
दुःखाग्निदीपितमना मनागपि विभूतिषु ।
तास्वभीष्टोपनीतासु न रेमेऽग्निशिखास्विव ॥ २ ॥
duḥkhāgnidīpitamanā manāgapi vibhūtiṣu ,
tāsvabhīṣṭopanītāsu na reme'gniśikhāsviva 2
2. duḥkha agni dīpita manā manāk api vibhūtiṣu
tāsu abhīṣṭa upanītāsu na reme agni śikhāsu iva
2. duḥkha agni dīpita manā मनाक् api tāsu abhīṣṭa upanītāsu vibhūtiṣu na reme,
agni śikhāsu iva.
2. His mind inflamed by the fire of sorrow, he did not rejoice even slightly in those desired prosperities and possessions (vibhūti), which were brought to him, just as one would not delight in the flames of a fire.
एकान्तेषु दिगन्तेषु निर्झरेषु गुहासु च ।
आजगाम रतिं जन्तुर्मुक्तेषुर्व्याधतो यथा ॥ ३ ॥
ekānteṣu diganteṣu nirjhareṣu guhāsu ca ,
ājagāma ratiṃ janturmukteṣurvyādhato yathā 3
3. ekānteṣu diganteṣu nirjhareṣu guhāsu ca
ājagāma ratim jantuḥ mukteṣuḥ vyādhataḥ yathā
3. jantuḥ ekānteṣu diganteṣu nirjhareṣu guhāsu ca ratim ājagāma,
yathā mukteṣuḥ vyādhataḥ (ratim ājagāma)
3. A creature found solace in solitary places, remote regions, waterfalls, and caves, much like an animal that has escaped a hunter's arrow finds pleasure (in freedom) from the hunter.
राघव त्वमिवाशेषाः सान्त्वानुनयबोधनैः ।
प्रार्थितः कार्यते भृत्यैर्महीपो दिवसक्रियाः ॥ ४ ॥
rāghava tvamivāśeṣāḥ sāntvānunayabodhanaiḥ ,
prārthitaḥ kāryate bhṛtyairmahīpo divasakriyāḥ 4
4. rāghava tvam iva aśeṣāḥ sāntva-anunaya-bodhanaiḥ
prārthitaḥ kāryate bhṛtyaiḥ mahīpaḥ divasakriyāḥ
4. rāghava,
tvam iva aśeṣāḥ mahīpaḥ bhṛtyaiḥ sāntva-anunaya-bodhanaiḥ prārthitaḥ divasakriyāḥ kāryate
4. O Rāghava, like you, all kings, when entreated by their servants with consoling, conciliatory, and instructive words, are made to perform their daily duties.
ददावतितरां दानं गोभूमिकनकादिकम् ।
देवेभ्यो ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च स्वजनेभ्यश्च मानद ॥ ५ ॥
dadāvatitarāṃ dānaṃ gobhūmikanakādikam ,
devebhyo brāhmaṇebhyaśca svajanebhyaśca mānada 5
5. dadau atitarām dānam go-bhūmi-kanaka-ādikam
devebhyaḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ca svajanebhyaḥ ca mānada
5. mānada,
saḥ atitarām go-bhūmi-kanaka-ādikam dānam devebhyaḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ca svajanebhyaḥ ca dadau
5. O giver of honor, he gave an abundance of donations (dāna), consisting of cows, land, gold, and other such things, to the gods, to the brahmins, and to his own relatives.
चचार च तपः कर्तुं कृच्छ्रचान्द्रायणादिकम् ।
परिबभ्राम तीर्थानि वनान्यायतनानि च ॥ ७ ॥
cacāra ca tapaḥ kartuṃ kṛcchracāndrāyaṇādikam ,
paribabhrāma tīrthāni vanānyāyatanāni ca 7
7. cacāra ca tapaḥ kartum kṛcchra-cāndrāyaṇa-ādikam
paribabhrāma tīrthāni vanāni āyatanāni ca
7. saḥ ca kṛcchra-cāndrāyaṇa-ādikam tapaḥ kartum cacāra,
ca tīrthāni vanāni āyatanāni ca paribabhrāma
7. And he also performed (tapas) austerities like Kṛcchra, Cāndrāyaṇa, and others, and he extensively wandered to pilgrimage sites, forests, and shrines.
स तथापि विशोकत्वं न मनागपि लब्धवान् ।
अनिधानां खनन्भूमिं निधानार्थी निधिं यथा ॥ ८ ॥
sa tathāpi viśokatvaṃ na manāgapi labdhavān ,
anidhānāṃ khananbhūmiṃ nidhānārthī nidhiṃ yathā 8
8. saḥ tathā api viśokatvam na manāk api labdhavān
anidhānām khanan bhūmim nidhānārthī nidhim yathā
8. tathā api saḥ viśokatvam manāk api na labdhavān,
anidhānām bhūmim khanan nidhānārthī nidhim yathā.
8. Still, he could not achieve even a trace of freedom from sorrow, like someone seeking a hidden treasure (nidhi) who digs in a place where no such treasure (nidhi) exists.
रात्रिंदिवं महानेष शुष्यत्येव कृशानुना ।
चिन्तया चिन्तयामास संसारव्याधिभेषजम् ॥ ९ ॥
rātriṃdivaṃ mahāneṣa śuṣyatyeva kṛśānunā ,
cintayā cintayāmāsa saṃsāravyādhibheṣajam 9
9. rātrimdivam mahān eṣaḥ śuṣyati eva kṛśānunā
cintayā cintayāmāsa saṃsāravyādhibheṣajam
9. rātrimdivam eṣaḥ mahān kṛśānunā eva śuṣyati.
cintayā saṃsāravyādhibheṣajam cintayāmāsa.
9. Day and night, he, great as he was, continued to wither away as if consumed by fire (kṛśānu). Plagued by anxiety, he deliberated upon the remedy for the affliction of cyclical existence (saṃsāra).
चिन्तापरवशो दीनो राज्यं स्वस्य विषोपमम् ।
महाविभवमप्यग्रे नापश्यत्खिन्नया धिया ॥ १० ॥
cintāparavaśo dīno rājyaṃ svasya viṣopamam ,
mahāvibhavamapyagre nāpaśyatkhinnayā dhiyā 10
10. cintāparavaśaḥ dīnaḥ rājyam svasya viṣopamam
mahāvibhavam api agre na apaśyat khinnayā dhiyā
10. cintāparavaśaḥ dīnaḥ (saḥ) khinnayā dhiyā agre mahāvibhavam api svasya rājyam viṣopamam na apaśyat.
10. Overwhelmed by anxiety and despondent, he perceived his own kingdom, despite its great prosperity, as if it were poison. With his mind full of sorrow, he could no longer see its value.
अथैकदैकान्तगतां चूडालामङ्कमागताम् ।
इदं मधुरया वाचा समुवाच शिखिध्वजः ॥ ११ ॥
athaikadaikāntagatāṃ cūḍālāmaṅkamāgatām ,
idaṃ madhurayā vācā samuvāca śikhidhvajaḥ 11
11. atha ekadā ekāntagatām cūḍālām aṅkam āgatām
idam madhurayā vācā samuvāca śikhidhvajaḥ
11. atha ekadā śikhidhvajaḥ ekāntagatām aṅkam āgatām cūḍālām madhurayā vācā idam samuvāca.
11. Then, one day, Śikhidhvaja, with a sweet voice, spoke these words to Cūḍālā, who had approached and settled in his lap as he sat in a secluded spot.
शिखिध्वज उवाच ।
भुक्तं राज्यं चिरं कालं भुक्ता विभवभूमयः ।
अधुनास्मि विरागेण युक्तो गच्छामि काननम् ॥ १२ ॥
śikhidhvaja uvāca ,
bhuktaṃ rājyaṃ ciraṃ kālaṃ bhuktā vibhavabhūmayaḥ ,
adhunāsmi virāgeṇa yukto gacchāmi kānanam 12
12. śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca | bhuktam rājyam
ciram kālam bhuktāḥ vibhava-bhūmayaḥ
| adhunā asmi virāgeṇa
yuktaḥ gacchāmi kānanam || 12 ||
12. śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca rājyam ciram kālam bhuktam,
vibhava-bhūmayaḥ bhuktāḥ adhunā virāgeṇa yuktaḥ asmi,
kānanam gacchāmi 12
12. Shikidhvaja said: "I have enjoyed the kingdom for a long time, and the lands of prosperity have been experienced. Now, filled with dispassion, I am going to the forest."
न सुखानि न दुःखानि नापदो न च संपदः ।
क्रोडीकुर्वन्ति तन्वङ्गि मुनिं वननिवासिनम् ॥ १३ ॥
na sukhāni na duḥkhāni nāpado na ca saṃpadaḥ ,
kroḍīkurvanti tanvaṅgi muniṃ vananivāsinam 13
13. na sukhāni na duḥkhāni na āpadaḥ na ca saṃpadaḥ |
kroḍī-kurvanti tanvaṅgi munim vana-nivāsinam || 13 ||
13. tanvaṅgi,
na sukhāni,
na duḥkhāni,
na āpadaḥ,
na ca saṃpadaḥ vana-nivāsinam munim kroḍī-kurvanti 13
13. "Neither joys nor sorrows, neither calamities nor riches, O slender-bodied one, can affect a sage who dwells in the forest."
न देशभङ्गसंमोहो न संग्रामे जनक्षयः ।
राज्यादप्यधिकं मन्ये सुखं वननिवासिनाम् ॥ १४ ॥
na deśabhaṅgasaṃmoho na saṃgrāme janakṣayaḥ ,
rājyādapyadhikaṃ manye sukhaṃ vananivāsinām 14
14. na deśa-bhaṅga-saṃmohaḥ na saṃgrāme jana-kṣayaḥ |
rājyāt api adhikam manye sukham vana-nivāsinām || 14 ||
14. na deśa-bhaṅga-saṃmohaḥ,
na saṃgrāme jana-kṣayaḥ vana-nivāsinām sukham rājyāt api adhikam manye 14
14. "There is no confusion due to the ruin of the country, nor loss of people in war. I consider the happiness of those dwelling in the forest to be greater even than that found in a kingdom."
स्तबकस्तनधारिण्यो रक्तपल्लवपाणयः ।
मञ्जरीजालहारिण्यो लोलशुभ्राम्बुदांशुकाः ॥ १५ ॥
stabakastanadhāriṇyo raktapallavapāṇayaḥ ,
mañjarījālahāriṇyo lolaśubhrāmbudāṃśukāḥ 15
15. stabaka-stana-dhāriṇyaḥ rakta-pallava-pāṇayaḥ |
mañjarī-jāla-hāriṇyaḥ lola-śubhra-ambuda-aṃśukāḥ || 15 ||
15. stabaka-stana-dhāriṇyaḥ rakta-pallava-pāṇayaḥ
mañjarī-jāla-hāriṇyaḥ lola-śubhra-ambuda-aṃśukāḥ 15
15. [Women] with breasts like flower clusters, with hands like red sprouts, bearing garlands of networks of blossoms, and whose garments are like swaying white clouds.
स्वपरागाङ्गरागिण्यः कृतकौसुममण्डनाः ।
आसेव्यकाञ्चनशिलानितम्बतटशोभिताः ॥ १६ ॥
svaparāgāṅgarāgiṇyaḥ kṛtakausumamaṇḍanāḥ ,
āsevyakāñcanaśilānitambataṭaśobhitāḥ 16
16. svaparāgāṅgarāgiṇyaḥ kṛtakausumamaṇḍanāḥ
āsevya-kāñcana-śilā-nitamba-taṭa-śobhitāḥ
16. svaparāgāṅgarāgiṇyaḥ kṛtakausumamaṇḍanāḥ
āsevya-kāñcana-śilā-nitamba-taṭa-śobhitāḥ
16. Adorned with their own pollen as a body cosmetic, decorated with floral ornaments, and made beautiful by the inviting slopes of golden rocks.
तरङ्गमौक्तिकप्रोतसरिन्मुक्तालतावृताः ।
लतावयस्यावलिता मुग्धमुग्धमृगात्मजाः ॥ १७ ॥
taraṅgamauktikaprotasarinmuktālatāvṛtāḥ ,
latāvayasyāvalitā mugdhamugdhamṛgātmajāḥ 17
17. taraṅga-mauktika-prota-sarin-muktā-latā-vṛtāḥ
latā-vayasyā-āvalitāḥ mugdha-mugdha-mṛgātmajāḥ
17. taraṅga-mauktika-prota-sarin-muktā-latā-vṛtāḥ
latā-vayasyā-āvalitāḥ mugdha-mugdha-mṛgātmajāḥ
17. Covered with pearl-like vines, where river-pearls are strung like pearls born from waves; embraced by companion-creepers, and having fawns that are enchantingly innocent.
स्वभावोद्दामसौगन्ध्या वितीर्णफलभोजनाः ।
षट्पदश्रेणिनयनाः पुष्पापूरलताङ्गिकाः ॥ १८ ॥
svabhāvoddāmasaugandhyā vitīrṇaphalabhojanāḥ ,
ṣaṭpadaśreṇinayanāḥ puṣpāpūralatāṅgikāḥ 18
18. svabhāva-uddāma-saugandhyāḥ vitīrṇa-phala-bhojanāḥ
ṣaṭpada-śreṇi-nayanāḥ puṣpa-āpūra-latā-aṅgikāḥ
18. svabhāva-uddāma-saugandhyāḥ vitīrṇa-phala-bhojanāḥ
ṣaṭpada-śreṇi-nayanāḥ puṣpa-āpūra-latā-aṅgikāḥ
18. Possessing an intense fragrance by their intrinsic nature (dharma), offering fruits as sustenance, with eyes like swarms of bees, and having bodies of vines abundant with flowers.
आस्वाद्यस्यन्दतां याताः शीतलामलगात्रिकाः ।
रमयन्ति त्वमिव मां वनवीथ्यो वरानने ॥ १९ ॥
āsvādyasyandatāṃ yātāḥ śītalāmalagātrikāḥ ,
ramayanti tvamiva māṃ vanavīthyo varānane 19
19. āsvādya-syandatām yātāḥ śītalā amala-gātrikāḥ
ramayanti tvam iva mām vanavīthyaḥ varānanē
19. varānanē āsvādya-syandatām yātāḥ śītalā
amala-gātrikāḥ vanavīthyaḥ tvam iva mām ramayanti
19. Having attained the state of exuding deliciousness, with cool and pure forms, these forest paths, O beautiful-faced one, delight me just as you do.
यथा विविक्तमेकान्ते मनो भवति निर्वृतम् ।
न तथा शशिबिम्बेषु न च ब्रह्मेन्द्रसद्मसु ॥ २० ॥
yathā viviktamekānte mano bhavati nirvṛtam ,
na tathā śaśibimbeṣu na ca brahmendrasadmasu 20
20. yathā viviktam ekānte manaḥ bhavati nirvṛtam na
tathā śaśibimbeṣu na ca brahma-indra-sadmasu
20. yathā manaḥ ekānte viviktam nirvṛtam bhavati,
tathā śaśibimbeṣu na,
ca brahma-indra-sadmasu na.
20. Just as the mind (manas), when secluded and clear (viviktam) in solitude, becomes utterly peaceful (nirvṛtam), it does not achieve such tranquility amidst moonbeams, nor in the palaces of Brahmā and Indra.
अस्मिन्सन्मन्त्रणे तन्वि न विघ्नं कर्तुमर्हसि ।
भर्तुर्विघटयन्तीच्छां न स्वप्नेऽपि कुलस्त्रियः ॥ २१ ॥
asminsanmantraṇe tanvi na vighnaṃ kartumarhasi ,
bharturvighaṭayantīcchāṃ na svapne'pi kulastriyaḥ 21
21. asmin sanmantraṇe tanvi na vighnam kartum arhasi
bhartuḥ vighaṭayantī icchām na svapne api kulastriyaḥ
21. tanvi! asmin sanmantraṇe vighnam kartum na arhasi.
kulastriyaḥ bhartuḥ icchām svapne api na vighaṭayantī.
21. O slender one, you should not create an obstacle (vighnam) in this important deliberation. Indeed, noble wives (kulastriyaḥ) do not thwart their husband's desire, not even in a dream.
चूडालोवाच ।
प्राप्तकालं कृतं कार्यं राजते नाथ नेतरत् ।
वसन्ते राजते पुष्पं फलं शरदि राजते ॥ २२ ॥
cūḍālovāca ,
prāptakālaṃ kṛtaṃ kāryaṃ rājate nātha netarat ,
vasante rājate puṣpaṃ phalaṃ śaradi rājate 22
22. cūḍālā uvāca prāptakālam kṛtam kāryam rājate nātha
na itarat vasante rājate puṣpam phalam śaradi rājate
22. cūḍālā uvāca.

prāptakālam kṛtam kāryam rājate,
itarat na.
vasante puṣpam rājate,
śaradi phalam rājate.
22. Cūḍālā said: 'My lord, a task (kāryam) accomplished at the appropriate time (prāptakālam) is effective, but not otherwise. A flower is radiant in spring, and a fruit is radiant in autumn.'
जराजरठदेहानां युक्तो वनसमाश्रयः ।
न यूनां त्वादृशामेव तेनैतन्मे न रोचते ॥ २३ ॥
jarājaraṭhadehānāṃ yukto vanasamāśrayaḥ ,
na yūnāṃ tvādṛśāmeva tenaitanme na rocate 23
23. jarā-jaraṭha-dehānām yuktaḥ vana-samāśrayaḥ
na yūnām tvādṛśām eva tena etat me na rocate
23. jarā-jaraṭha-dehānām vana-samāśrayaḥ yuktaḥ.
yūnām tvādṛśām eva na.
tena etat me na rocate.
23. Taking refuge in the forest (vanasamāśrayaḥ) is appropriate for those whose bodies are stiffened by old age. But it is certainly not for youths like you. Therefore, this does not please me.
यौवनेन महाराज न यावद्वयमुज्झिताः ।
पुष्पौघेणेव तरवस्तावच्छोभामहे गृहे ॥ २४ ॥
yauvanena mahārāja na yāvadvayamujjhitāḥ ,
puṣpaugheṇeva taravastāvacchobhāmahe gṛhe 24
24. yauvanena mahārāja na yāvat vayam ujjhitāḥ
puṣpaugheṇa iva taravaḥ tāvat śobāmahe gṛhe
24. mahārāja yauvanena vayam yāvat na ujjhitāḥ
tāvat puṣpaugheṇa iva taravaḥ gṛhe śobāmahe
24. O great king, as long as we are not abandoned by youth, we remain splendid in our homes, just like trees adorned with a profusion of flowers.
पुष्पधाना पुष्पमितजरसा सह काननम् ।
समं गृहाद्गमिष्यामो हंसा इव सरोवरात् ॥ २५ ॥
puṣpadhānā puṣpamitajarasā saha kānanam ,
samaṃ gṛhādgamiṣyāmo haṃsā iva sarovarāt 25
25. puṣpadhānāḥ puṣpamitajarasa saha kānanam
samam gṛhāt gamiṣyāmaḥ haṃsāḥ iva sarovarāt
25. puṣpadhānāḥ puṣpamitajarasa saha samam gṛhāt
kānanam gamiṣyāmaḥ haṃsāḥ sarovarāt iva
25. We, who have borne the flowers of youth, will go to the forest together, accompanied by an old age measured by many springs, leaving our homes just as swans depart from a lake.
अप्राप्तकालं नृपतेः प्रजापालनमुज्झतः ।
राजन्यस्यैव रन्ध्रस्य महदेनो भविष्यति ॥ २६ ॥
aprāptakālaṃ nṛpateḥ prajāpālanamujjhataḥ ,
rājanyasyaiva randhrasya mahadeno bhaviṣyati 26
26. aprāptakālam nṛpateḥ prajāpālanam ujjhataḥ
rājanyasya eva randhrasya mahat enaḥ bhaviṣyati
26. nṛpateḥ aprāptakālam prajāpālanam ujjhataḥ
rājanyasya eva randhrasya mahat enaḥ bhaviṣyati
26. For a king who abandons the protection of his subjects at an inappropriate time, a great sin (enas) will indeed arise, which will become a serious vulnerability (randhra) for that ruler (rājanya).
अप्राप्तकारिणं भूपं रोधयन्ति च वै प्रजाः ।
रोधयन्ति ह्यकार्येभ्यः प्रभुं भृत्याः परस्परम् ॥ २७ ॥
aprāptakāriṇaṃ bhūpaṃ rodhayanti ca vai prajāḥ ,
rodhayanti hyakāryebhyaḥ prabhuṃ bhṛtyāḥ parasparam 27
27. aprāptakāriṇam bhūpam rodhayanti ca vai prajāḥ
rodhayanti hi akāryebhyaḥ prabhum bhṛtyāḥ parasparam
27. prajāḥ ca vai aprāptakāriṇam bhūpam rodhayanti hi
bhṛtyāḥ parasparam prabhum akāryebhyaḥ rodhayanti
27. Indeed, subjects restrain a king who acts improperly. And certainly, servants mutually restrain their master from wrong actions.
शिखिध्वज उवाच ।
अलमुत्पलपत्राक्षि विघ्नेनाभिमतस्य मे ।
विद्धि मां गतमेवेतो दूरमेकान्तकाननम् ॥ २८ ॥
śikhidhvaja uvāca ,
alamutpalapatrākṣi vighnenābhimatasya me ,
viddhi māṃ gatameveto dūramekāntakānanam 28
28. śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca alam utpalapatrākṣi vighnena abhimatasya
me viddhi mām gatam eva itaḥ dūram ekāntakānanam
28. śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca he utpalapatrākṣi me abhimatasya
vighnena alam mām itaḥ dūram ekāntakānanam gatam eva viddhi
28. Shikhidhvaja spoke: "Enough, O lotus-petal-eyed one, with obstructing my intention. Understand that I have already departed from here, far into a solitary forest."
बाला त्वमनवद्याङ्गि नागन्तव्यं वनं त्वया ।
पुंसामपि हि मृद्वङ्गि दुर्विगाह्यो वनाश्रयः ॥ २९ ॥
bālā tvamanavadyāṅgi nāgantavyaṃ vanaṃ tvayā ,
puṃsāmapi hi mṛdvaṅgi durvigāhyo vanāśrayaḥ 29
29. bālā tvam anavadyāṅgi na āgantavyam vanam tvayā
puṃsām api hi mṛdvaṅgi durvigāhyaḥ vana-āśrayaḥ
29. he anavadyāṅgi tvam bālā tvayā vanam na āgantavyam
he mṛdvaṅgi hi puṃsām api vana-āśrayaḥ durvigāhyaḥ
29. "You are a young girl, O flawless-limbed one, and you should not enter the forest. For indeed, O tender-limbed one, a forest refuge is difficult to navigate even for men."
समर्था न वनावासे योषितः कठिना अपि ।
कानने पुष्पमञ्जर्यः सोढुं शस्त्रालिमक्षमाः ॥ ३० ॥
samarthā na vanāvāse yoṣitaḥ kaṭhinā api ,
kānane puṣpamañjaryaḥ soḍhuṃ śastrālimakṣamāḥ 30
30. samarthāḥ na vana-āvāse yoṣitaḥ kaṭhināḥ api
kānane puṣpa-mañjaryaḥ soḍhum śastra-alim akṣamāḥ
30. kaṭhināḥ yoṣitaḥ api vana-āvāse samarthāḥ na
kānane puṣpa-mañjaryaḥ śastra-alim soḍhum akṣamāḥ
30. Even strong women are not capable of living in the forest. Just as delicate flower-clusters in a forest cannot withstand a swarm of weapons, so too are women ill-suited for such hardships.
भवत्या पालयन्त्येह राज्ये स्थातव्यमुत्तमे ।
कुटुम्बभारोद्वहनं पत्यौ याते व्रतं स्त्रियः ॥ ३१ ॥
bhavatyā pālayantyeha rājye sthātavyamuttame ,
kuṭumbabhārodvahanaṃ patyau yāte vrataṃ striyaḥ 31

31. You, O excellent one, should remain here, protecting this kingdom. For women, when their husband has departed, their duty (vrata) is to uphold the family burden.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा दयितां राजा तामिन्दुवदनां वशी ।
उत्तस्थौ स्नातुमखिलं दिनकार्यं चकार च ॥ ३२ ॥

32. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having spoken thus to his beloved, that moon-faced queen, the self-controlled king rose up to bathe and performed all his day's activities.
अथोज्झितप्रजाचेष्टो रविरस्ताचलं ययौ ।
शिखिध्वजो वनमिव समस्तजनदुर्गमम् ॥ ३३ ॥

33. Then, when the activities of living beings ceased due to its departure, the sun went to the western mountain, just as Śikhidhvaja went to the forest, which was inaccessible to all people.
संहृत्य विततं रूपं तमेवानुययौ प्रभा ।
नाथं भवननिष्क्रान्तं चूडालेवानुरागिणी ॥ ३४ ॥
saṃhṛtya vitataṃ rūpaṃ tamevānuyayau prabhā ,
nāthaṃ bhavananiṣkrāntaṃ cūḍālevānurāgiṇī 34

34. Having withdrawn its widespread form, the radiance followed him, just as the devoted Cūḍālā followed her lord (nātha) who had departed from the palace.
दिक्षु संध्याब्ददन्तासु स्थितासु कृतमण्डलम् ।
तमालबालकाङ्कासु ज्योत्स्नाहासोदयाङ्कितम् ॥ ३६ ॥

36. When the directions, standing (at twilight), had clouds like teeth and were marked by the silhouettes of young tamāla trees, the firmament appeared with its orb formed (by the moon) and marked by the emerging, smiling moonlight.
गच्छतोरपरं पारं दंपत्योर्मैरव पदम् ।
देवोद्यानमयं रन्तुं दिनश्रीदिननाथयोः ॥ ३७ ॥
gacchatoraparaṃ pāraṃ daṃpatyormairava padam ,
devodyānamayaṃ rantuṃ dinaśrīdinanāthayoḥ 37

37. O Mairava, this is the other shore, a divine garden-like abode where the couple - the splendor of the day and the lord of the day - go to sport.
आगच्छतोरिदं पारं ह्यघतीक्ष्णकरोज्झितम् ।
निशानिशानायकयोर्दंपत्योर्मैरवं पुनः ॥ ३८ ॥
āgacchatoridaṃ pāraṃ hyaghatīkṣṇakarojjhitam ,
niśāniśānāyakayordaṃpatyormairavaṃ punaḥ 38
38. āgacchatoḥ idam pāram hi agha-tīkṣṇakara-ujjhitam
niśāniśānāyakayoḥ dampatyoḥ mairavam punaḥ

38. O Mairava, again, this shore, abandoned by the distress-causing sharply-rayed sun, is for the couple - Night and the Lord of Night - who are approaching it.
तारागणोऽथ ददृशे विकीर्णो व्योमकुट्टिमे ।
मुक्तो मङ्गललाजानां दिग्वधूभिरिवाञ्जलिः ॥ ३९ ॥
tārāgaṇo'tha dadṛśe vikīrṇo vyomakuṭṭime ,
mukto maṅgalalājānāṃ digvadhūbhirivāñjaliḥ 39
39. tārāgaṇaḥ atha dadṛśe vikīrṇaḥ vyoma-kuṭṭime

39. Then, the multitude of stars was seen scattered across the pavement of the sky, as if it were handfuls of auspicious fried grain released by the maidens of the cardinal directions.
चन्द्रानना तमःश्यामा श्रान्ता कुसुमहासिनी ।
यामिनी यौवनं प्राप सरोजमुकुलस्तनी ॥ ४० ॥
candrānanā tamaḥśyāmā śrāntā kusumahāsinī ,
yāminī yauvanaṃ prāpa sarojamukulastanī 40

40. Night, with her moon-like face, dark as obscurity, weary, and smiling with flowers, attained youth, her breasts like lotus buds.
कृतसंध्यासमाचारः सहचूडालयेष्टया ।
सुष्वाप शयने भूयो मैनाक इव सागरे ॥ ४१ ॥
kṛtasaṃdhyāsamācāraḥ sahacūḍālayeṣṭayā ,
suṣvāpa śayane bhūyo maināka iva sāgare 41

41. Having completed his evening rituals and made a sacrificial offering at Cūḍālā's temple, he then slept on his bed, just like Maināka (maināka) rests in the ocean.
अथार्धरात्रसमये देशे निःशब्दतां गते ।
घननिद्राशिलाकोशनिलीने सकले जने ॥ ४२ ॥

42. Then, at midnight, when the region had fallen silent, and all the people were immersed, as if hidden within the rock-like shell of deep slumber.
स तस्यां संप्रसुप्तायां शयने कोमलांशुके ।
भृशं निद्राविमूढायां भ्रमर्यामिव पङ्कजे ॥ ४३ ॥
sa tasyāṃ saṃprasuptāyāṃ śayane komalāṃśuke ,
bhṛśaṃ nidrāvimūḍhāyāṃ bhramaryāmiva paṅkaje 43

43. He, when she was deeply asleep on the bed with its soft coverings, profoundly bewildered by sleep, like a female bee (bhramarī) in a lotus flower.
तत्याज दयितां सुप्तामङ्काद्राजा शिखिध्वजः ।
स्वैरं स्वैरं मुखं राहोर्दिशं चान्द्रप्रभामिव ॥ ४४ ॥
tatyāja dayitāṃ suptāmaṅkādrājā śikhidhvajaḥ ,
svairaṃ svairaṃ mukhaṃ rāhordiśaṃ cāndraprabhāmiva 44

44. King Śikhidhvaja (śikhidhvaja) gently and slowly removed his beloved, sleeping wife from his lap, just as Rāhu (rāhu) slowly releases the moon's disk and its lunar splendor (cāndraprabhā) back to its quarter of the sky.
उत्तस्थौ शयनाल्लीनवधूकार्धाञ्चलांशुकात् ।
सलक्ष्मीकान्तिलोलोर्मेर्हरिः क्षीरार्णवादिव ॥ ४५ ॥

45. Just as Hari (Viṣṇu) emerged from the Milk Ocean (kṣīrārṇava), whose agitated waves shimmered with the radiance of Lakṣmī, so did he rise from his bed, from the part of the garment belonging to his embraced wife.
वीरक्रमार्थं यामीति तत्रैवानुचरव्रजम् ।
योजयित्वा जगामासौ पुरान्निर्गत्य पूर्णधीः ॥ ४६ ॥
vīrakramārthaṃ yāmīti tatraivānucaravrajam ,
yojayitvā jagāmāsau purānnirgatya pūrṇadhīḥ 46
46. vīrakramārtham yāmi iti tatra eva anucaravrajam
yojayitvā jagāma asau purāt nirgatya pūrṇadhīḥ

46. Declaring, "I am going to accomplish heroic feats," the sagacious man (pūrṇadhīḥ) assigned his company of attendants right there. Then, exiting the city, he departed.
राज्यलक्ष्मि नमस्तुभ्यमित्युक्त्वा मण्डलाद्गतः ।
विवेशोग्रामरण्यानीमेको नद इवार्णवम् ॥ ४७ ॥
rājyalakṣmi namastubhyamityuktvā maṇḍalādgataḥ ,
viveśogrāmaraṇyānīmeko nada ivārṇavam 47
47. rājyalakṣmi namas tubhyam iti uktvā maṇḍalāt gataḥ
viveśa ugrām araṇyānīm ekaḥ nadaḥ iva arṇavam

47. After saying, "Salutations to you, O royal fortune (Rājyalakṣmī)!", he departed from his kingdom. Alone, he entered the formidable wilderness, just as a river flows into the ocean.
घनान्धकारगुल्माढ्या क्षुद्रभूतौघकर्कशा ।
सारण्यानी निशा सार्धं समं तेनातिवाहिता ॥ ४८ ॥

48. That wilderness (araṇyānī), which was dense with thickets of profound darkness and harsh with swarms of minor spirits, was passed through by him simultaneously with the night.
प्रातः शून्यामरण्यानीं स नीत्वा विततं दिनम् ।
सममर्केण कस्यांचिद्विशश्राम वनावनौ ॥ ४९ ॥
prātaḥ śūnyāmaraṇyānīṃ sa nītvā vitataṃ dinam ,
samamarkeṇa kasyāṃcidviśaśrāma vanāvanau 49

49. He spent a long day, from morning onwards, traversing the desolate forest. Then, as the sun was setting, he rested in some part of the forest land.
भानावदृश्यतां याते तत्र स्नानादिपूर्वकम् ।
किंचित्फलादिकं भुक्त्वा तां निनाय तमस्विनीम् ॥ ५० ॥
bhānāvadṛśyatāṃ yāte tatra snānādipūrvakam ,
kiṃcitphalādikaṃ bhuktvā tāṃ nināya tamasvinīm 50
50. bhānau adṛśyatām yāte tatra snānādipūrvakam
kiṃcit phalādikam bhuktvā tām nināya tamasvinīm

50. After the sun had vanished from sight, he performed bathing and other rituals there. Then, having eaten some fruits and such, he passed that night (tamasvinī).
पुनः प्रातः पुराण्युच्चैर्मण्डलानि गिरीन्नदीः ।
जवादुल्लङ्घयामास राजा द्वादशशर्वरीः ॥ ५१ ॥
punaḥ prātaḥ purāṇyuccairmaṇḍalāni girīnnadīḥ ,

51. For twelve nights, from morning onwards, the king swiftly crossed ancient, high territories, mountains, and rivers.
ततो मन्दरशैलस्य तटस्थं जनदुर्गमम् ।
प्राप काननमत्यन्तदूरस्थजनतापुरम् ॥ ५२ ॥

52. Then he reached a forest near Mount Mandara, which was difficult for people to access and located extremely far from any human settlements.
रटत्प्रणालसलिलवापीवलितपादपम् ।
शीर्णवेद्यालयज्ञातभूतपूर्वद्विजाश्रमम् ॥ ५३ ॥

53. This place had trees encircled by ponds where water murmured through channels, and its ruined altars and shrines revealed it to be a former hermitage (āśrama) for Brahmins (dvija).

आपूर्णपादपलतं प्राणवृत्तिक्ररैः फलैः ॥ ५४ ॥

54. This place's bowers of creepers were frequented by perfected beings (siddha) and free from petty creatures, and its trees and creepers were laden with life-sustaining fruits.

शीतले शाद्वलश्यामे स्निग्धे सफलपादपे ॥ ५५ ॥

55. There, in one level, pure, water-adorned, cool, dark green with grass, smooth, and fruit-tree-laden spot.
समञ्जरीभिर्वल्लीभिः स चकारोटजालयम् ।
प्रावृट्कालः सविद्युद्भिर्नीलाभ्रैरिव पञ्जरम् ॥ ५६ ॥

56. He built a hut (oṭajālaya) with blossoming creepers, just as the monsoon season, with its lightning-filled blue clouds, forms a cage.
मसृणं वैणवं दण्डं फलभोजनभाजनम् ।
अर्घपात्रं पुष्पभाण्डमक्षमालां कमण्डलुम् ॥ ५७ ॥
masṛṇaṃ vaiṇavaṃ daṇḍaṃ phalabhojanabhājanam ,
arghapātraṃ puṣpabhāṇḍamakṣamālāṃ kamaṇḍalum 57

57. He (arranged) a smooth bamboo staff, a vessel for eating fruit, a water-offering vessel, a flower container, a rosary, and an ascetic's water pot.
कन्थां शीतापनोदाय बृसीं चैव मृगाजिनम् ।
आनीयायोजयत्तस्मिन्मठिकामन्दिरे नृप ॥ ५८ ॥
kanthāṃ śītāpanodāya bṛsīṃ caiva mṛgājinam ,
ānīyāyojayattasminmaṭhikāmandire nṛpa 58
58. kanthām śītāpanodāya bṛsīm ca eva mṛgājinam
ānīya ayojayat tasmin maṭhikāmandire nṛpa

58. And O King, having brought a ragged cloak for warding off the cold, a grass mat, and a deer skin, he arranged them in that small hermitage-temple.
यत्किंचिदन्यद्वा वस्तु योग्यं तापसकर्मणि ।
तत्तत्र स्थापयामास जगतीव क्रमं विधिः ॥ ५९ ॥
yatkiṃcidanyadvā vastu yogyaṃ tāpasakarmaṇi ,
tattatra sthāpayāmāsa jagatīva kramaṃ vidhiḥ 59
59. yat kiñcit anyat vā vastu yogyam tāpasakarmaṇi
tat tatra sthāpayāmāsa jagati iva kramam vidhiḥ
59. (saḥ) yat kiñcit anyat vā vastu tāpasakarmaṇi yogyam tat tatra sthāpayāmāsa,
vidhiḥ jagati kramam iva (sthāpayāmāsa)
59. Whatever other thing was suitable for the ascetic's practice (tapas), he also placed there, just as Brahmā (vidhi) establishes order (krama) in the world (jagati).
संध्यापूर्वं जपं प्रातः प्रहरे स तदाकरोत् ।
पुष्पोच्चयं द्वितीये तु स्नानं देवार्चनं ततः ॥ ६० ॥
saṃdhyāpūrvaṃ japaṃ prātaḥ prahare sa tadākarot ,
puṣpoccayaṃ dvitīye tu snānaṃ devārcanaṃ tataḥ 60
60. sandhyāpūrvam japam prātaḥ prahare saḥ tadā akarot
puṣpoccayam dvitīye tu snānam devārcanam tataḥ
60. saḥ tadā prātaḥ prahare sandhyāpūrvam japam akarot dvitīye

60. In the morning, in the first watch, he then performed silent recitation (japa) preceded by the twilight prayers. But in the second watch, he performed the gathering of flowers, then bathing, and then the worship of deities.
पश्चाद्वनफलं किंचिद्वनकन्दं विसादि च ।
भुक्त्वा जप्यपरो भूत्वा निनायैको निशां वशी ॥ ६१ ॥

61. Afterward, having eaten some forest fruits, forest roots, and lotus stalks, and having become devoted to chanting, the self-controlled one spent the night alone.
इति दिवसमखेदं मन्दरोपान्तकच्छे विरचित उटजेऽन्तर्मालवेशो निनाय ।
नवनृपतिविलासं तं न सस्मार कं वा स्फुरति हृदि विवेके राज्यलक्ष्म्यो हरन्ति ॥ ६२ ॥

navanṛpativilāsaṃ taṃ na sasmāra kaṃ vā sphurati hṛdi viveke rājyalakṣmyo haranti 62

62. Thus, the lord of Malava (Mālaveśa) effortlessly spent the day within the hut he had constructed in the marshy region near Mount Mandara. He did not remember the pleasures of a king, nor anything else. For when discrimination (viveka) shines in the heart, the glories of the kingdom are dispelled.
