तां मायां शममानीय चूडाला समचिन्तयत् ।
दिष्टया भोगेच्छया नायं ह्रियते वसुधाधिपः ॥ १ ॥

tāṃ māyāṃ śamamānīya cūḍālā samacintayat ,
diṣṭayā bhogecchayā nāyaṃ hriyate vasudhādhipaḥ 1

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Bringing that illusion (māyā) to an end, Cūḍālā reflected: 'Fortunately, this king is not carried away by the desire for enjoyment.'
शान्तः समसमाभोग एवं शक्रसमागमे ।
असंरम्भमहेलं च कृतवान्व्यावहारिकम् ॥ २ ॥
śāntaḥ samasamābhoga evaṃ śakrasamāgame ,
asaṃrambhamahelaṃ ca kṛtavānvyāvahārikam 2
2. śāntaḥ samasamābhogaḥ evam śakrasamāgame
asaṃrambham ahelam ca kṛtavān vyāvahārikam
2. evam śakrasamāgame śāntaḥ samasamābhogaḥ
ca asaṃrambham ahelam vyāvahārikam kṛtavān
2. In this way, during his encounter with Indra, he remained calm, equally composed in enjoyment and non-enjoyment, and performed his duties without agitation or negligence.
भूय एव प्रपञ्चेन विमृशाम्येव सादरम् ।
रागद्वेषप्रधानेन केनचिद्बुद्धिहारिणा ॥ ३ ॥
bhūya eva prapañcena vimṛśāmyeva sādaram ,
rāgadveṣapradhānena kenacidbuddhihāriṇā 3
3. bhūyaḥ eva prapañcena vimṛśāmi eva sādaram
rāgadveṣapradhānena kenacit buddhihāriṇā
3. bhūyaḥ eva sādaram eva kenacit rāgadveṣapradhānena
buddhihāriṇā prapañcena vimṛśāmi
3. Again, I will indeed carefully reflect upon the illusion (prapañca), which is characterized by attachment and aversion, and which captivates the intellect of some.
इति संचिन्त्य सा रात्राविन्दावभ्युदिते वने ।
गृहीतमङ्गनारूपं कान्ता मदनिका सती ॥ ४ ॥
iti saṃcintya sā rātrāvindāvabhyudite vane ,
gṛhītamaṅganārūpaṃ kāntā madanikā satī 4
4. iti saṃcintya sā rātrau indau abhyudite vane
gṛhītam aṅganārūpam kāntā madanikā satī
4. iti saṃcintya sā satī kāntā gṛhītam aṅganārūpam
madanikā indau abhyudite rātrau vane
4. Thus contemplating, that chaste and beautiful Cūḍālā, assuming the form of a woman named Madanikā, entered the forest at night when the moon had risen.
वाते वहति फुल्लाढ्ये मधुरामोदमांसले ।
संध्याजप्यपरे नद्यास्तीरसंस्थे शिखिध्वजे ॥ ५ ॥
vāte vahati phullāḍhye madhurāmodamāṃsale ,
saṃdhyājapyapare nadyāstīrasaṃsthe śikhidhvaje 5
5. vāte vahati phullāḍhye madhurāmodamāṃsale
sandhyājapyapare nadyāḥ tīrasaṃsthe śikhidhvaje

5. As the wind blew, richly fragrant with the sweet scents of abundant blossoms, and while Shikhidhvaja stood on the riverbank, devoted to his evening prayers (japa).
तत्र संकल्पिते पुष्पशयने माल्यमालिता ।
कण्ठे संकल्पितं कान्तं खिङ्गमादाय संस्थिता ॥ ७ ॥
tatra saṃkalpite puṣpaśayane mālyamālitā ,
kaṇṭhe saṃkalpitaṃ kāntaṃ khiṅgamādāya saṃsthitā 7
7. tatra saṅkalpite puṣpaśayane mālyamālitā kaṇṭhe
saṅkalpitaṃ kāntaṃ khiṅgam ādāya saṃsthitā
7. mālyamālitā sā tatra saṅkalpite puṣpaśayane
kaṇṭhe saṅkalpitaṃ kāntaṃ khiṅgam ādāya saṃsthitā
7. There, on the prepared flower bed, she sat down, adorned with garlands, having taken her charming, consecrated parrot from her neck.
आगत्यान्विष्य कुञ्जात्स प्रददर्श शिखिध्वजः ।
लतागेहे मदनिकां कण्ठे खिङ्गं मनोहरम् ॥ ८ ॥
āgatyānviṣya kuñjātsa pradadarśa śikhidhvajaḥ ,
latāgehe madanikāṃ kaṇṭhe khiṅgaṃ manoharam 8
8. āgatya anviṣya kuñjāt sa pradadarśa śikhidhvajaḥ
latāgehe madanikāṃ kaṇṭhe khiṅgam manoharam
8. saḥ śikhidhvajaḥ āgatya kuñjāt anviṣya latāgehe
madanikāṃ kaṇṭhe manoharam khiṅgam pradadarśa
8. Having come and searched from the bower, Shikhidhvaja saw Madanika in the creeper-house, (with) the charming parrot on her neck.
कुन्तलावलितस्कन्धं समालब्धं च चन्दनैः ।
शयनावृतिनिक्षेपपर्याकुलितशेखरम् ॥ ९ ॥
kuntalāvalitaskandhaṃ samālabdhaṃ ca candanaiḥ ,
śayanāvṛtinikṣepaparyākulitaśekharam 9
9. kuntalāvalitaskandhaṃ samālabdhaṃ ca
candanaiḥ śayanāvṛtinikṣepaparyākulitaśekharam

9. whose shoulders were covered with locks of hair and smeared with sandalwood paste, and whose head-garland was disarranged by the removal of the bed-cover.
हेमाभे द्विगुणाकारबालाबाहूपधानके ।
संसक्तश्रवणापाङ्गकपोलतलकुन्तलम् ॥ १० ॥
hemābhe dviguṇākārabālābāhūpadhānake ,
saṃsaktaśravaṇāpāṅgakapolatalakuntalam 10

10. Upon a golden-hued (surface), on arm-pillows fashioned by the young women's (doubled-form) arms, (the couple lay) with their locks of hair clinging to their ears, the outer corners of their eyes, and their cheek surfaces.
मिथुनं तद्ददर्शाथ मिथः प्रहसिताननम् ।
अन्योन्यवदनासक्तं छन्नं कल्पलतांशुकैः ॥ ११ ॥
mithunaṃ taddadarśātha mithaḥ prahasitānanam ,
anyonyavadanāsaktaṃ channaṃ kalpalatāṃśukaiḥ 11
11. mithunam tat dadarśa atha mithaḥ prahasitānanam
anyonyavadanāsaktam channam kalpalatā-aṃśukaiḥ
11. atha tat mithunam mithaḥ prahasitānanam
anyonyavadanāsaktam kalpalatā-aṃśukaiḥ channam dadarśa
11. Then he saw that couple, whose faces were smiling at each other and intimately joined, covered by garments of wish-fulfilling creepers.
आलोलमाल्यशयनं मदनातुरमाकुलम् ।
अङ्गलग्नच्छलेनात्मरागमन्योन्यमर्पयत् ॥ १२ ॥
ālolamālyaśayanaṃ madanāturamākulam ,
aṅgalagnacchalenātmarāgamanyonyamarpayat 12
12. ālolamālyaśayanam madanāturam ākulam
aṅgalagna-chalena ātma-rāgam anyonyam arpayat

12. Agitated by love and restless, with a bed of swaying garlands, they mutually offered their own passion (ātman-rāga) under the pretext of their bodies clinging to each other.
अभ्युन्मुखं समानन्दमुद्दाममदमन्थरम् ।
परस्पराहतं पुष्पैर्वक्षोभ्यां पीडितस्तनम् ॥ १३ ॥
abhyunmukhaṃ samānandamuddāmamadamantharam ,
parasparāhataṃ puṣpairvakṣobhyāṃ pīḍitastanam 13
13. abhyunmukham sa-ānandam uddāmamadamantharam
parasparāhatam puṣpaiḥ vakṣobhyām pīḍita-stanam
13. abhyunmukham sa-ānandam uddāmamadamantharam
parasparāhatam puṣpaiḥ vakṣobhyām pīḍita-stanam
13. Facing each other, full of joy, and languid from intense passion, they struck each other with flowers, their breasts pressed (pīḍita) by mutual chests (vakṣas).
तदालोक्याविकारेण चेतसालं तुतोष सः ।
अहो सुखं स्थितौ खिङ्गावित्याह स शिखिध्वजः ॥ १४ ॥
tadālokyāvikāreṇa cetasālaṃ tutoṣa saḥ ,
aho sukhaṃ sthitau khiṅgāvityāha sa śikhidhvajaḥ 14
14. tat ālokya avikāreṇa cetasā alam tutoṣa saḥ aho
sukham sthitau khiṅgau iti āha saḥ śikhidhvajaḥ
14. saḥ śikhidhvajaḥ avikāreṇa cetasā tat ālokya alam
tutoṣa saḥ "aho khiṅgau sthitau sukham" iti āha
14. King Śikhidhvaja, observing that scene with an undisturbed mind, was greatly pleased. He then exclaimed, "Oh, how comfortably the two Khiṅgas are situated!"
तिष्ठताङ्ग यथाकामं सुखं खिङ्गौ यथास्थितम् ।
विघ्नं माकरवं भीतावित्युक्त्वा निर्जगाम सः ॥ १५ ॥
tiṣṭhatāṅga yathākāmaṃ sukhaṃ khiṅgau yathāsthitam ,
vighnaṃ mākaravaṃ bhītāvityuktvā nirjagāma saḥ 15
15. tiṣṭhatām aṅga yathākāmam sukham khiṅgau yathāsthitam
vighnam mā akaravam bhītau iti uktvā nirjagāma saḥ
15. aṅga khiṅgau yathākāmam yathāsthitam sukham tiṣṭhatām
bhītau vighnam mā akaravam iti uktvā saḥ nirjagāma
15. He said, "O dear one, let the two Khiṅgas remain comfortably, just as they are, and as they desire. I should not create any disturbance for the frightened pair." Having said this, he departed.
ततो मुहूर्तमात्रेण प्रपञ्चं तमुपेक्ष्य सा ।
निर्ययौ दर्शयन्ती स्वं रतिफुल्लाकुलं वपुः ॥ १६ ॥
tato muhūrtamātreṇa prapañcaṃ tamupekṣya sā ,
niryayau darśayantī svaṃ ratiphullākulaṃ vapuḥ 16
16. tataḥ muhūrtamātreṇa prapañcam tam upekṣya sā
niryayau darśayantī svam ratiphullākulam vapuḥ
16. tataḥ sā muhūrtamātreṇa tam prapañcam upekṣya
svam ratiphullākulam vapuḥ darśayantī niryayau
16. Then, in just a moment, she disregarded that extensive worldly display (prapañca) and departed, revealing her own form, which was blooming and agitated with passion.
उपविष्टं ददर्शैनं नृपं हेमशिलातले ।
समाधिसंस्थमेकान्ते मनाग्विकसितेक्षणम् ॥ १७ ॥
upaviṣṭaṃ dadarśainaṃ nṛpaṃ hemaśilātale ,
samādhisaṃsthamekānte manāgvikasitekṣaṇam 17
17. upaviṣṭam dadarśa enam nṛpam hemaśilātale
samādhisaṃstham ekānte manāk vikasitekṣaṇam
17. sā enam nṛpam hemaśilātale ekānte upaviṣṭam
samādhisaṃstham manāk vikasitekṣaṇam dadarśa
17. She saw the king (nṛpa) seated on a golden rock slab, in a secluded spot. He was absorbed in deep concentration (samādhi), with his eyes slightly open.
तं प्रदेशमुपागम्य लज्जावनमितानना ।
तूष्णीमासीत्क्षणं खिन्ना म्लाना मदनिकाङ्गना ॥ १८ ॥
taṃ pradeśamupāgamya lajjāvanamitānanā ,
tūṣṇīmāsītkṣaṇaṃ khinnā mlānā madanikāṅganā 18
18. tam pradeśam upāgamya lajjā avanamita ānanā |
tūṣṇīm āsīt kṣaṇam khinnā mlānā madanikā aṅganā ||
18. madanikā aṅganā tam pradeśam upāgamya lajjā avanamita ānanā khinnā mlānā kṣaṇam tūṣṇīm āsīt.
18. Having approached that place, Madanikā, the woman, with her face bowed down in shame, dejected and withered, remained silent for a moment.
क्षणाच्छिखिध्वजो ध्यानाद्विरतस्तामुवाच ह ।
अत्यन्तमधुरं वाक्यमिदमक्षुब्धया धिया ॥ १९ ॥
kṣaṇācchikhidhvajo dhyānādviratastāmuvāca ha ,
atyantamadhuraṃ vākyamidamakṣubdhayā dhiyā 19
19. kṣaṇāt śikhidhvajaḥ dhyānāt virataḥ tām uvāca ha
| atyanta madhuram vākyam idam akṣubdhayā dhiyā ||
19. kṣaṇāt śikhidhvajaḥ dhyānāt virataḥ akṣubdhayā dhiyā atyanta madhuram idam vākyam tām ha uvāca.
19. In a moment, Śikhidhvaja, having ceased his meditation (dhyāna), spoke to her, uttering these exceedingly sweet words with an unagitated intellect.
तन्वि किं शीघ्रमेव त्वं विघ्नितानन्दमागता ।
आनन्दायैव भूतानि यतन्ते यानि कानिचित् ॥ २० ॥
tanvi kiṃ śīghrameva tvaṃ vighnitānandamāgatā ,
ānandāyaiva bhūtāni yatante yāni kānicit 20
20. tanvi kim śīghram eva tvam vighnita ānandam āgatā
| ānandāya eva bhūtāni yatante yāni kānicit ||
20. tanvi,
kim tvam śīghram eva vighnita ānandam āgatā? yāni kānicit bhūtāni ānandāya eva yatante.
20. "O slender one, why have you so quickly attained impeded joy? After all, all beings, whatever they may be, strive only for joy."
भूयस्तोषय तं गच्छ कान्तं प्रणयवृत्तिभिः ।
परस्परेप्सितस्नेहो दुर्लभो हि जगत्त्रये ॥ २१ ॥
bhūyastoṣaya taṃ gaccha kāntaṃ praṇayavṛttibhiḥ ,
parasparepsitasneho durlabho hi jagattraye 21
21. bhūyaḥ toṣaya tam gaccha kāntam praṇaya vṛttibhiḥ |
paraspara īpsita snehaḥ durlabhaḥ hi jagat traye ||
21. bhūyaḥ tam kāntam praṇayavṛttibhiḥ toṣaya,
gaccha.
hi jagat traye paraspara īpsita snehaḥ durlabhaḥ.
21. "Go, and again please that beloved one with expressions of love. For indeed, mutual desired affection is rare in all three worlds."
अहमेतेन चार्थेन नोद्वेगं यामि मानिनि ।
यद्यदिष्टतमं लोके तत्तदेव विजानता ॥ २२ ॥
ahametena cārthena nodvegaṃ yāmi mānini ,
yadyadiṣṭatamaṃ loke tattadeva vijānatā 22
22. aham etena ca arthena na udvegam yāmi mānini |
yat yat iṣṭatamam loke tat tat eva vijānatā ||
22. mānini aham etena ca arthena na udvegam yāmi
loke yat yat iṣṭatamam tat tat eva vijānatā
22. O proud woman, I am not distressed by this matter, for a discerning person truly knows what is most desirable in the world.
अहं कुम्भश्च तन्वङ्गि वीतरागाविहेतरा ।
दुर्वासःशापजा बाला त्वं यदिच्छसि तत्कुरु ॥ २३ ॥
ahaṃ kumbhaśca tanvaṅgi vītarāgāvihetarā ,
durvāsaḥśāpajā bālā tvaṃ yadicchasi tatkuru 23
23. aham kumbhaḥ ca tanvaṅgi vītarāgau iha itarau |
durvāsaḥ śāpajā bālā tvam yat icchasi tat kuru ||
23. tanvaṅgi aham kumbhaḥ ca iha vītarāgau itarau
tvam durvāsaḥ śāpajā bālā yat icchasi tat kuru
23. O slender-limbed one, I and Kumbha are here, free from passion (vītarāga); we are different (from such concerns). You, young woman, born from Durvasa's curse, do whatever you wish.
मदनिकोवाच ।
एवमेष महाभाग स्त्रीस्वभावो हि चञ्चलः ।
कामो ह्यष्टगुणः स्त्रीणां न कोपं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥ २४ ॥
madanikovāca ,
evameṣa mahābhāga strīsvabhāvo hi cañcalaḥ ,
kāmo hyaṣṭaguṇaḥ strīṇāṃ na kopaṃ kartumarhasi 24
24. madanikā uvāca | evam eṣaḥ mahābhāga strīsvabhāvaḥ hi cañcalaḥ
| kāmaḥ hi aṣṭaguṇaḥ strīṇām na kopam kartum arhasi ||
24. mahābhāga madanikā uvāca evam eṣaḥ strīsvabhāvaḥ hi cañcalaḥ
hi strīṇām kāmaḥ aṣṭaguṇaḥ tvam kopam kartum na arhasi
24. Madanika said: 'O greatly fortunate one, the nature of women is indeed fickle. For women, desire (kāma) is truly eight-fold. Therefore, you ought not to be angry.'
अबलाहमनेनास्मि रात्रौ गहनकानने ।
त्वयि संध्याजपपरे किं करोमि वराकिका ॥ २५ ॥
abalāhamanenāsmi rātrau gahanakānane ,
tvayi saṃdhyājapapare kiṃ karomi varākikā 25
25. abalā aham anena asmi rātrau gahanakānane |
tvayi saṃdhyājapapare kim karomi varākikā ||
25. aham abalā varākikā anena asmi rātrau
gahanakānane tvayi saṃdhyājapapare kim karomi
25. I am a helpless woman (abalā) in this dense forest at night. With you absorbed in your evening prayers, what can I, a poor, helpless creature (varākikā), possibly do?
अबला वा कुमारी वा जारं न रतिरोधनम् ।
करोति परिखिङ्गेन नाङ्गे स्वे विनिवेशितम् ॥ २६ ॥
abalā vā kumārī vā jāraṃ na ratirodhanam ,
karoti parikhiṅgena nāṅge sve viniveśitam 26
26. abalā vā kumārī vā jāram na ratirodhanam
karoti parikhiṅgena na aṅge sve viniveśitam
26. abalā vā kumārī vā jāram ratirodhanam na
karoti parikhiṅgena sve aṅge na viniveśitam
26. A helpless woman or a maiden does not consider a paramour an impediment to pleasure (rati) through intimate union, even when he is not placed within her own body.
स्त्रियः सुन्दरतां याताः पुरपुंसामसङ्गमे ।
मन्युर्निषेध आक्रन्दः सतीत्वं किं करिष्यति ॥ २७ ॥
striyaḥ sundaratāṃ yātāḥ purapuṃsāmasaṅgame ,
manyurniṣedha ākrandaḥ satītvaṃ kiṃ kariṣyati 27
27. striyaḥ sundaratām yātāḥ purapuṃsām asaṅgame
manyuḥ niṣedhaḥ ākrandhaḥ satītvaṃ kim kariṣyati
27. striyaḥ sundaratām yātāḥ purapuṃsām asaṅgame
manyuḥ niṣedhaḥ ākrandhaḥ satītvaṃ kim kariṣyati
27. When women attain beauty but are without union with city men, what will anger, prohibition, lamentation, or even chastity (satītva) accomplish?
अबला स्त्री तथा बाला मूढाहमपराधिनी ।
क्षन्तुमर्हसि नाथ त्वं क्षमावन्तो हि साधवः ॥ २८ ॥
abalā strī tathā bālā mūḍhāhamaparādhinī ,
kṣantumarhasi nātha tvaṃ kṣamāvanto hi sādhavaḥ 28
28. abalā strī tathā bālā mūḍhā aham aparādhinī
kṣantum arhasi nātha tvam kṣamāvantaḥ hi sādhavaḥ
28. aham abalā strī tathā bālā mūḍhā aparādhinī
nātha tvam kṣantum arhasi hi sādhavaḥ kṣamāvantaḥ
28. I am a helpless woman, a young and foolish offender. O lord, you ought to forgive me, for indeed, the righteous are forgiving.
शिखिध्वज उवाच ।
मन्युर्मम न बालेऽन्तर्विद्यते ख इव द्रुमः ।
केवलं साधुनिन्द्यत्वान्नेच्छामि त्वामहं वधूम् ॥ २९ ॥
śikhidhvaja uvāca ,
manyurmama na bāle'ntarvidyate kha iva drumaḥ ,
kevalaṃ sādhunindyatvānnecchāmi tvāmahaṃ vadhūm 29
29. śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca manyuḥ mama na bāle antaḥ vidyate kha iva
drumaḥ kevalam sādhunindyatvāt na icchāmi tvām aham vadhūm
29. śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca bāle mama manyuḥ kha iva drumaḥ antaḥ na
vidyate kevalam sādhunindyatvāt aham tvām vadhūm na icchāmi
29. Shikhidhvaja said: "O young woman, my anger does not exist within me, like a tree in the sky (i.e., I have no anger). It is only because of the censure of good people that I do not desire you as my wife."
सुहृत्त्वेन वनान्तेषु पूर्ववत्सुखमङ्गने ।
वीतरागतया नित्यं सममेव रमावहे ॥ ३० ॥
suhṛttvena vanānteṣu pūrvavatsukhamaṅgane ,
vītarāgatayā nityaṃ samameva ramāvahe 30
30. suhṛttvena vanānteṣu pūrvavat sukham aṅgane
vītarāgatayā nityam samam eva ramāvahe
30. aṅgane suhṛttvena vītarāgatayā nityam samam
eva pūrvavat vanānteṣu sukham ramāvahe
30. O beloved, let us always enjoy ourselves happily in the forest outskirts, just as we did before, maintaining equanimity and freedom from attachment (vītarāgatā).
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
एवं समतया तत्र स्थिते तस्मिञ्छिखिध्वजे ।
चूडाला चिन्तयामास तत्सत्त्वेनोदिताशया ॥ ३१ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
evaṃ samatayā tatra sthite tasmiñchikhidhvaje ,
cūḍālā cintayāmāsa tatsattvenoditāśayā 31
31. śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca evam samatayā tatra sthite tasmin
śikhidhvaje cūḍālā cintayāmāsa tatsattvena uditāśayā
31. śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca.
evam tatra samatayā sthite tasmin śikhidhvaje,
tatsattvena uditāśayā cūḍālā cintayāmāsa.
31. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: When King Śikhidhvaja was thus established in that state of equanimity, Cūḍālā, her mind awakened by his inherent spiritual nature (sattva), began to ponder.
अहो वत परं साम्यं भगवानयमागतः ।
वीतरागतयाऽक्रोधो जीवन्मुक्तोऽवतिष्ठते ॥ ३२ ॥
aho vata paraṃ sāmyaṃ bhagavānayamāgataḥ ,
vītarāgatayā'krodho jīvanmukto'vatiṣṭhate 32
32. aho vata param sāmyam bhagavān ayam āgataḥ
vītarāgatayā akrodhaḥ jīvanmuktaḥ avatiṣṭhate
32. aho vata ayam bhagavān param sāmyam āgataḥ
vītarāgatayā akrodhaḥ jīvanmuktaḥ avatiṣṭhate
32. Oh, this revered one has indeed attained supreme equanimity! He remains free from anger and is a liberated-while-living (jīvanmukta) individual due to his state of detachment (vītarāgatā).
नैनं हरन्ति ते भोगा न महत्योऽपि सिद्धयः ।
न सुखानि न दुःखानि नापदो न च संपदः ॥ ३३ ॥
nainaṃ haranti te bhogā na mahatyo'pi siddhayaḥ ,
na sukhāni na duḥkhāni nāpado na ca saṃpadaḥ 33
33. na enam haranti te bhogāḥ na mahatyaḥ api siddhayaḥ
na sukhāni na duḥkhāni na āpadaḥ na ca sampadaḥ
33. te bhogāḥ enam na haranti mahatyaḥ api siddhayaḥ
na sukhāni na duḥkhāni āpadaḥ na ca sampadaḥ
33. Neither do worldly enjoyments distract him, nor do even great spiritual accomplishments (siddhi) sway him. Neither happinesses nor sorrows, neither misfortunes nor successes (sampad) affect him.
चिन्तिताः सकला एकं प्रयान्त्येनमनिन्दिताः ।
मन्ये महर्द्धयः कान्ता नारायणमिवापरम् ॥ ३४ ॥
cintitāḥ sakalā ekaṃ prayāntyenamaninditāḥ ,
manye maharddhayaḥ kāntā nārāyaṇamivāparam 34
34. cintitāḥ sakalāḥ ekam prayānti enam aninditāḥ
manye maharddhayaḥ kāntāḥ nārāyaṇam iva aparam
34. manye sakalāḥ aninditāḥ kāntāḥ maharddhayaḥ
enam ekam aparam nārāyaṇam iva prayānti
34. I believe that all blameless and cherished great attainments converge upon this one, just as they would upon another Nārāyaṇa.
आत्मवृत्तान्तमखिलं तमेनं स्मारयाम्यहम् ।
कुम्भरूपमिदं त्यक्त्वा चूडालैव भवाम्यहम् ॥ ३५ ॥
ātmavṛttāntamakhilaṃ tamenaṃ smārayāmyaham ,
kumbharūpamidaṃ tyaktvā cūḍālaiva bhavāmyaham 35
35. ātma-vṛttāntam akhilam tam enam smārayāmi aham
kumbha-rūpam idam tyaktvā cūḍālā eva bhavāmi aham
35. aham enam tam akhilam ātma-vṛttāntam smārayāmi.
aham idam kumbha-rūpam tyaktvā cūḍālā eva bhavāmi
35. I shall remind him of the complete account of his true self (ātman-vṛttānta). Abandoning this pot-like form (kumbha-rūpam), I shall become Cūḍālā herself.
तस्मान्मदनिकादेहाच्चूडाला निर्गतेव सा ।
बभावस्य पुरो युक्ता निर्गतेव समुद्गकात् ॥ ३७ ॥
tasmānmadanikādehāccūḍālā nirgateva sā ,
babhāvasya puro yuktā nirgateva samudgakāt 37
37. tasmāt madanikā-dehāt cūḍālā nirgatā iva sā
babhāu asya puraḥ yuktā nirgatā iva samudgakāt
37. tasmāt sā cūḍālā madanikā-dehāt nirgatā iva
asya puraḥ yuktā babhāu samudgakāt nirgatā iva
37. Therefore, Cūḍālā, having emerged from that body of Madanikā, shone before him, appearing properly (or united with her true self), just as if she had emerged from a casket.
तां ददर्शानवद्याङ्गीं पुनः प्रणयपेशलाम् ।
कान्तां मदनिकामेव चूडालां दयितां स्थिताम् ॥ ३८ ॥
tāṃ dadarśānavadyāṅgīṃ punaḥ praṇayapeśalām ,
kāntāṃ madanikāmeva cūḍālāṃ dayitāṃ sthitām 38
38. tām dadarśa anavadyāṅgīm punaḥ praṇaya-peśalām
kāntām madanikām eva cūḍālām dayitām sthitām
38. saḥ punaḥ tām anavadyāṅgīm praṇaya-peśalām kāntām
dayitām madanikām eva cūḍālām sthitām dadarśa
38. He saw her again, with flawless limbs, charming with affection - his beloved Cūḍālā, who was indeed Madanikā, standing there.
समुदितामिव माधवपद्मिनीमुपगतामिव भूमितलाच्छ्रियम् ।
प्रकटितामिव रत्नसमुद्गकात्परिददर्श निजां दयितां नृपः ॥ ३९ ॥
samuditāmiva mādhavapadminīmupagatāmiva bhūmitalācchriyam ,
prakaṭitāmiva ratnasamudgakātparidadarśa nijāṃ dayitāṃ nṛpaḥ 39
39. samuditām iva mādhava-padminīm
upagatām iva bhūmi-talāt śriyam
prakaṭitām iva ratna-samudrakāt
paridadarśa nijām dayitām nṛpaḥ
39. nṛpaḥ nijām dayitām samuditām mādhava-padminīm iva,
bhūmi-talāt upagatām śriyam iva,
ratna-samudrakāt prakaṭitām iva paridadarśa.
39. The king saw his beloved, who appeared like a lotus blooming in spring, like prosperity (śrī) risen from the earth, and like something revealed from a jewel casket.
