ततस्तत्कुवलोल्लासिमालतीमाल्यलोचना ।
ललना ललितालोक्य लीलयाऽऽलपिता मया ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
tatastatkuvalollāsimālatīmālyalocanā ,
lalanā lalitālokya līlayā''lapitā mayā 1
1. Vasishtha continued:—The graceful nymph with lotus like eyes, and her side long glances darting as a string of malati flowers, was then gently looked upon by me, and accosted with tenderness.
का त्वं कमलगर्भाभे किमर्थं मामुपागता ।
कस्यासि किं प्रार्थयसे क्व गतासि किमास्पदा ॥ २ ॥
kā tvaṃ kamalagarbhābhe kimarthaṃ māmupāgatā ,
kasyāsi kiṃ prārthayase kva gatāsi kimāspadā 2
2. Who art thou sweet nymph, I said, that art as fair as the farina of the lotus floret, and comest to my company; say, whose and what thou art, where is thy abode and wither thou goest, and what thou desirest of me.
विद्याधर्युवाच ।
मुने शृणु यथावत्त्वमात्मोदन्तं वदाम्यहम् ।
प्रष्टुमर्हसि विस्रब्धमार्तां करुणयार्थिनीम् ॥ ३ ॥
vidyādharyuvāca ,
mune śṛṇu yathāvattvamātmodantaṃ vadāmyaham ,
praṣṭumarhasi visrabdhamārtāṃ karuṇayārthinīm 3
3. The nymph replied:—It is meet, O muni, that you greet me thus; that repair to you with a grieving heart, and will lay my case confidently before you for your kind advice to me.
परमाकाशकोशस्य कस्मिंश्चित्कोणकोटरे ।
युष्माकं संस्थितं किंचिदिदं तावज्जगद्गृहम् ॥ ४ ॥
paramākāśakośasya kasmiṃścitkoṇakoṭare ,
yuṣmākaṃ saṃsthitaṃ kiṃcididaṃ tāvajjagadgṛham 4
4. paramākāśakośasya kasmiñcit koṇakoṭare yuṣmākam
saṃsthitam kiñcit idam tāvat jagadgṛham
4. yuṣmākam idam tāvat jagadgṛham paramākāśakośasya
kasmiñcit koṇakoṭare kiñcit saṃsthitam
4. This entire abode of the world, which belongs to you, is merely a small thing situated in a hollow corner of the sheath of the supreme space.
पातालभूतलस्वर्गा इहापवरकास्त्रयः ।
कल्पनैका कुमार्यत्र कृता धातृत्वमायया ॥ ५ ॥
pātālabhūtalasvargā ihāpavarakāstrayaḥ ,
kalpanaikā kumāryatra kṛtā dhātṛtvamāyayā 5
5. pātālabhūtalasvargāḥ iha apavarakāḥ trayaḥ
kalpanā ekā kumārī atra kṛtā dhātṛtvamāyayā
5. iha pātālabhūtalasvargāḥ trayaḥ apavarakāḥ
atra ekā kumārī kalpanā dhātṛtvamāyayā kṛtā
5. Here, the netherworlds, the earth, and the heavens are the three rooms. In this context, a single maiden, Imagination, was created by the creative power (māyā) of the Creator.
तत्र द्वीपैः समुद्रैश्च वलितं वलयैरिव ।
पाटलोत्थं जगल्लक्ष्म्याः प्रकोष्ठमिव भूतलम् ॥ ६ ॥
tatra dvīpaiḥ samudraiśca valitaṃ valayairiva ,
pāṭalotthaṃ jagallakṣmyāḥ prakoṣṭhamiva bhūtalam 6
6. tatra dvīpaiḥ samudraiḥ ca valitam valayaiḥ iva
pāṭalottham jagallakṣmyāḥ prakoṣṭam iva bhūtalam
6. tatra bhūtalam dvīpaiḥ samudraiḥ ca valayaiḥ iva valitam,
jagallakṣmyāḥ pāṭalottham prakoṣṭam iva
6. There, the earth (bhūtala) is like the reddish forearm of the World's Goddess of Fortune (Lakṣmī), encircled by islands and oceans as if by bracelets.
अन्ते द्वीपसमुद्राणां सर्वदिक्कमवस्थिता ।
योजनानां सहस्त्राणि दश हेममयी मही ॥ ७ ॥
ante dvīpasamudrāṇāṃ sarvadikkamavasthitā ,
yojanānāṃ sahastrāṇi daśa hemamayī mahī 7
7. ante dvīpasamudrāṇām sarvadikkam avasthitā
yojanānām sahastrāṇi daśa hemamayī mahī
7. dvīpasamudrāṇām ante,
sarvadikkam daśa sahastrāṇi yojanānām hemamayī mahī avasthitā
7. At the boundary of the islands and oceans, the golden earth (mahī), extending for ten thousand yojanas, is situated in all directions.
स्वयंप्रकाशसंकल्पफलदाम्बरनिर्मला ।
चिन्तामणिमयी स्वच्छा स्वच्छायाजितविष्टपा ॥ ८ ॥
svayaṃprakāśasaṃkalpaphaladāmbaranirmalā ,
cintāmaṇimayī svacchā svacchāyājitaviṣṭapā 8
8. svayaṃprakāśasaṃkalpaphaladāmbaranirmalā

8. Self-illuminating, fulfilling desires, pure as the sky, made of wish-granting gems, perfectly clear, and conquering all worlds with its own radiance.
साप्सरोमरसिद्धानां लीलाविहरणावनिः ।
संकल्पमात्रसंपन्नसर्वसंभोगसुन्दरी ॥ ९ ॥
sāpsaromarasiddhānāṃ līlāviharaṇāvaniḥ ,
saṃkalpamātrasaṃpannasarvasaṃbhogasundarī 9
9. sā apsaromarutsiddhānām līlāviharaṇāvaniḥ
saṃkalpamātrasaṃpannasarvasaṃbhogasuṅdarī
9. sā apsaromarutsiddhānām līlāviharaṇāvaniḥ
saṃkalpamātrasaṃpannasarvasaṃbhogasuṅdarī
9. That (land) is a place for the playful enjoyment of Apsaras, Maruts, and perfected beings (Siddhas), beautiful and capable of fulfilling all pleasures merely by thought.
अन्ते तस्या भुवः शैलो लोकालोकोऽस्ति विश्रुतः ।
भूपीठस्य प्रकोष्ठस्य वलयावलनां दधत् ॥ १० ॥
ante tasyā bhuvaḥ śailo lokāloko'sti viśrutaḥ ,
bhūpīṭhasya prakoṣṭhasya valayāvalanāṃ dadhat 10
10. ante tasyāḥ bhuvaḥ śailaḥ lokālokaḥ asti viśrutaḥ
bhūpīṭhasya prakoṣṭhasya valayāvalanām dadhat
10. tasyāḥ bhuvaḥ ante viśrutaḥ lokālokaḥ śailaḥ asti
bhūpīṭhasya prakoṣṭhasya valayāvalanām dadhat
10. At the edge of that land, there is the famous Lokāloka mountain, which bears the winding encirclement of the arm-like region of the terrestrial plane.
क्वचिन्नित्यं तमोव्याप्तो मूढबुद्धेरिवाशयः ।
क्वचिन्नित्यं प्रकाशात्मा मनः सत्त्ववतामिव ॥ ११ ॥
kvacinnityaṃ tamovyāpto mūḍhabuddherivāśayaḥ ,
kvacinnityaṃ prakāśātmā manaḥ sattvavatāmiva 11
11. kvacit nityam tamovyāptaḥ mūḍhabuddheḥ iva āśayaḥ
kvacit nityam prakāśātmā manaḥ sattvavatām iva
11. kvacit nityam tamovyāptaḥ mūḍhabuddheḥ iva āśayaḥ

11. In some parts, it is perpetually enveloped in darkness, like the mind (āśaya) of a deluded person. In other parts, it is perpetually luminous in nature, like the mind (manas) of those endowed with purity (sattva).
क्वचिदाह्लादजनकः साधूनामिव संगमः ।
क्वचिदुद्वेगजनको मूर्खैरिव समागमः ॥ १२ ॥
kvacidāhlādajanakaḥ sādhūnāmiva saṃgamaḥ ,
kvacidudvegajanako mūrkhairiva samāgamaḥ 12
12. kvacit āhlādajanakaḥ sādhūnām iva saṅgamaḥ
kvacit udvegajanakaḥ mūrkhaiḥ iva samāgamaḥ
12. kvacit sādhūnām iva saṅgamaḥ āhlādajanakaḥ
kvacit mūrkhaiḥ iva samāgamaḥ udvegajanakaḥ
12. Sometimes it is a source of joy, like the company of virtuous people. Sometimes it causes agitation, like associating with fools.
क्वचित्प्रकटसर्वार्थो मनो मतिमतामिव ।
क्वचिदत्यन्तगहनो मूर्खश्रोत्रियचित्तवत् ॥ १३ ॥
kvacitprakaṭasarvārtho mano matimatāmiva ,
kvacidatyantagahano mūrkhaśrotriyacittavat 13
13. kvacit prakaṭasarvārthaḥ manaḥ matimatām iva
kvacit atyantagahanaḥ mūrkhaśrotriyacittavat
13. kvacit manaḥ matimatām iva prakaṭasarvārthaḥ
kvacit mūrkhaśrotriyacittavat atyantagahanaḥ
13. Sometimes it makes all meanings clear, like the mind (manas) of the intelligent. Sometimes it is exceedingly obscure, like the mind (citta) of a foolish scholar.
क्वचिदप्राप्तसोमांशुः क्वचिदप्राप्तसूर्यभाः ।
क्वचिल्लोकमयस्तेन क्वचिदाशून्यदिक्तटः ॥ १४ ॥
kvacidaprāptasomāṃśuḥ kvacidaprāptasūryabhāḥ ,
kvacillokamayastena kvacidāśūnyadiktaṭaḥ 14
14. kvacit aprāptasomāṃśuḥ kvacit aprāptasūryabhāḥ
kvacit lokamayaḥ tena kvacit āśūnyadiktataḥ
14. kvacit aprāptasomāṃśuḥ kvacit aprāptasūryabhāḥ
kvacit tena lokamayaḥ kvacit āśūnyadiktataḥ
14. Sometimes it is untouched by moonbeams, sometimes by sunlight. Sometimes it is filled with people, and sometimes its horizons are not empty.
क्वचिद्देवपुरव्याप्तः क्वचिद्दैत्यपुरान्वितः ।
क्वचित्पातालगहनः क्वचिच्छृङ्गोर्ध्वकन्धरः ॥ १५ ॥
kvaciddevapuravyāptaḥ kvaciddaityapurānvitaḥ ,
kvacitpātālagahanaḥ kvacicchṛṅgordhvakandharaḥ 15
15. kvacit devapuravyāptaḥ kvacit daityapurānvitaḥ
kvacit pātālagahanaḥ kvacit śṛṅgordhvakandharaḥ
15. kvacit devapuravyāptaḥ kvacit daityapurānvitaḥ

15. Sometimes it is encompassed by divine cities, sometimes it is associated with demonic cities. Sometimes it is as deep as the netherworld, and sometimes it has peaks with lofty ridges.
क्वचिच्छून्यमहारण्यवहत्कल्पान्तमारुतः ।
क्वचित्पुष्पवनोद्यानगायद्विद्याधरीगणः ॥ १७ ॥
kvacicchūnyamahāraṇyavahatkalpāntamārutaḥ ,
kvacitpuṣpavanodyānagāyadvidyādharīgaṇaḥ 17
17. kvacit śūnyamahāraṇyavahatkalpāntamārutaḥ
kvacit puṣpavanodyānagāyadvidyādharīgaṇaḥ

17. Sometimes, there is the wind of the cosmic dissolution blowing through desolate, vast forests. And sometimes, there are hosts of singing celestial maidens (vidyādharīs) in flower-filled forest gardens.
क्वचित्पातालगम्भीरगुहाकुम्भाण्डभीषणः ।
क्वचिन्नन्दनसोदर्यमुन्याश्रममनोरमः ॥ १८ ॥
kvacitpātālagambhīraguhākumbhāṇḍabhīṣaṇaḥ ,
kvacinnandanasodaryamunyāśramamanoramaḥ 18
18. kvacit pātālagambhīraguhākumbhāṇḍabhīṣaṇaḥ

18. Sometimes, it is terrifying with deep caves reminiscent of the netherworld, inhabited by dreadful pot-bellied demons (kumbhāṇḍas). And sometimes, it is charming with the hermitages (āśramas) of sages (munis), beautiful like Nandanavana.
क्वचिदक्षयमत्ताभ्रः क्वचिद्दुर्लभवारिदः ।
क्वचिद्गर्भगुहाश्वभ्रगहनोपान्तमण्डलः ॥ १९ ॥
kvacidakṣayamattābhraḥ kvaciddurlabhavāridaḥ ,
kvacidgarbhaguhāśvabhragahanopāntamaṇḍalaḥ 19
19. kvacit akṣayyamattābhraḥ kvacit durlabhavāridaḥ
kvacit garbhaguhāśvabhragahanopāntamaṇḍalaḥ
19. kvacit akṣayyamattābhraḥ kvacit durlabhavāridaḥ
kvacit garbhaguhāśvabhragahanopāntamaṇḍalaḥ
19. Sometimes, there are inexhaustibly full and exuberant clouds, and sometimes, clouds are rare. Sometimes, its surrounding regions consist of deep, impenetrable abysses and inner caves.
क्वचित्क्षुब्धजनाक्षेपसमुत्सादितभूतभूः ।
क्वचिद्वास्तव्यजनतासौजन्यजितविष्टपः ॥ २० ॥
kvacitkṣubdhajanākṣepasamutsāditabhūtabhūḥ ,
kvacidvāstavyajanatāsaujanyajitaviṣṭapaḥ 20
20. kvacit kṣubdhajanākṣepasamutsāditabhūtabhūḥ
kvacit vāstavyajanatāsaujanyajitaviṣṭapaḥ
20. kvacit kṣubdhajanākṣepasamutsāditabhūtabhūḥ
kvacit vāstavyajanatāsaujanyajitaviṣṭapaḥ
20. Sometimes, the land's inhabitants are utterly destroyed or expelled by the attacks of agitated people. And sometimes, the world is won over by the kindness of its resident populace.
क्वचिन्नित्यं वहद्वाताजातस्थावरजङ्गमः ।
क्वचित्सर्वक्षयोन्मुक्तस्थिरस्थावरजङ्गमः ॥ २१ ॥
kvacinnityaṃ vahadvātājātasthāvarajaṅgamaḥ ,
kvacitsarvakṣayonmuktasthirasthāvarajaṅgamaḥ 21
21. kvacit nityam vahadvātājātasthāvarajaṅgamaḥ
kvacit sarvakṣayonmuktasthirasthāvarajaṅgamaḥ
21. kvacit nityam vahadvātājātasthāvarajaṅgamaḥ
kvacit sarvakṣayonmuktasthirasthāvarajaṅgamaḥ
21. Sometimes (this region is characterized by) mobile and immobile beings perpetually born from flowing winds. At other times, it is characterized by stable mobile and immobile beings freed from all destruction.
क्वचिन्महामरुमरुन्मुक्तभांकारभीषणः ।
क्वचित्कणत्कमलिनीमत्तसारसभूषणः ॥ २२ ॥
kvacinmahāmarumarunmuktabhāṃkārabhīṣaṇaḥ ,
kvacitkaṇatkamalinīmattasārasabhūṣaṇaḥ 22
22. kvacit mahāmarumarunmuktabhāṃkārabhīṣaṇaḥ

22. Sometimes (this region is) terrifying with the roaring sound released by the mighty desert winds. At other times, it is adorned by excited cranes calling amidst lotus ponds.
क्वचित्सलिलकल्लोलजलदोल्लासघर्घरः ।
क्वचिन्मत्ताप्सरोदोलाविलासजनितस्मरः ॥ २३ ॥
kvacitsalilakallolajaladollāsaghargharaḥ ,
kvacinmattāpsarodolāvilāsajanitasmaraḥ 23
23. kvacit salilakallolajaladaullāsaghargharaḥ
kvacit mattāpsarodolāvilāsajanitasmaraḥ
23. kvacit salilakallolajaladaullāsaghargharaḥ
kvacit mattāpsarodolāvilāsajanitasmaraḥ
23. Sometimes (this region is characterized by) the rumbling and joyous sound of water waves and clouds. At other times, it is a place where desire (smara) is aroused by the graceful, swinging movements of intoxicated celestial nymphs (apsaras).
क्वचित्पिशाचकुम्भाण्डवेष्टिताचेष्टदिक्तटः ।
क्वचिद्विद्याधरीसिद्धनृत्यगीतसरित्तटः ॥ २४ ॥
kvacitpiśācakumbhāṇḍaveṣṭitāceṣṭadiktaṭaḥ ,
kvacidvidyādharīsiddhanṛtyagītasarittaṭaḥ 24
24. kvacit piśācakumbhāṇḍaveṣṭitāceṣṭadiktataḥ
kvacit vidyādharīsiddhanṛtyagītasarittaṭaḥ
24. kvacit piśācakumbhāṇḍaveṣṭitāceṣṭadiktataḥ
kvacit vidyādharīsiddhanṛtyagītasarittaṭaḥ
24. Sometimes (this region has) motionless directional banks, surrounded by ghouls (piśāca) and goblins (kumbhāṇḍa). At other times, its riverbanks resound with the dance and song of female celestial beings (vidyādharī) and perfected beings (siddha).
क्वचिदुद्वर्षदम्भोदसरिद्बाहुलुठत्तटः ।
क्वचित्सततगानीतनीतनानाभ्रसत्पटः ॥ २५ ॥
kvacidudvarṣadambhodasaridbāhuluṭhattaṭaḥ ,
kvacitsatatagānītanītanānābhrasatpaṭaḥ 25
25. kvacit utvarṣadambhodasaridbāhuluṭhattaṭaḥ
kvacit satatagānītanītanānābhrasatpaṭaḥ

25. Sometimes, its banks are tumbling, battered by the surging branches of rivers swollen by heavily raining clouds. At other times, it has splendid banners made of various clouds, brought and carried by the ever-moving winds.
क्वचित्कमलिनीकोशवक्त्रस्थाध्यानमण्डलः ।
क्वचित्स्वर्गाङ्गनासिद्धसुन्दरीदन्तमण्डनः ॥ २६ ॥
kvacitkamalinīkośavaktrasthādhyānamaṇḍalaḥ ,
kvacitsvargāṅganāsiddhasundarīdantamaṇḍanaḥ 26
26. kvacit kamalinīkośavaktrasthādhyānamanḍalaḥ
kvacit svargāṅganāsiddhasundarīdantamanḍanaḥ

26. Sometimes, it features gatherings of meditators (dhyāna) who are women with faces like lotus buds. At other times, it is adorned by the beautiful teeth of celestial damsels and lovely Siddha women.
क्वचित्तपद्दिनकरजनताचारसुन्दरः ।
क्वचिन्नैशतमोगेहनृत्यन्मत्तनिशाचरः ॥ २७ ॥
kvacittapaddinakarajanatācārasundaraḥ ,
kvacinnaiśatamogehanṛtyanmattaniśācaraḥ 27
27. kvacit tapatdinakarajanatācārasundaraḥ
kvacit naiśatamogehanṛtyanmattaniśācaraḥ

27. Sometimes, it appears beautiful through the virtuous conduct of its people, even under the scorching sun. At other times, it hosts intoxicated night-prowlers (niśācara) dancing within the abodes of nocturnal darkness.
क्वचिदुत्पतदुत्पाततया नश्यज्जनावनिः ।
क्वचित्सौराज्यसंपत्त्या प्रोद्भवत्पुरमण्डलः ॥ २८ ॥
kvacidutpatadutpātatayā naśyajjanāvaniḥ ,
kvacitsaurājyasaṃpattyā prodbhavatpuramaṇḍalaḥ 28
28. kvacit utpatatutpātatayā naśyatjanāvaniḥ kvacit
saurājyasampattyā prodbhavatpuramaṇḍalaḥ

28. Sometimes, its land and people are perishing due to emerging calamities. At other times, its regions of cities flourish due to the prosperity brought by good governance.
क्वचिदत्यन्तनिःशून्यः क्वचिज्जनपदावृतः ।
क्वचिच्छ्वभ्रान्तगम्भीरः क्वचित्पातालभीषणः ॥ २९ ॥
kvacidatyantaniḥśūnyaḥ kvacijjanapadāvṛtaḥ ,
kvacicchvabhrāntagambhīraḥ kvacitpātālabhīṣaṇaḥ 29
29. kvacit atyantaniḥśūnyaḥ kvacit janapadāvṛtaḥ
kvacit śvabhrāntagambhīraḥ kvacit pātālabhīṣaṇaḥ
29. kvacit atyantaniḥśūnyaḥ kvacit janapadāvṛtaḥ
kvacit śvabhrāntagambhīraḥ kvacit pātālabhīṣaṇaḥ
29. Sometimes it is utterly desolate, and at other times, it is surrounded by populated areas. Sometimes it is profoundly deep like an abyss, and at other times, terrifying like the netherworld.
क्वचिद्बृहत्कल्पतरुः क्वचिन्निर्जलजङ्गमः ।
क्वचिन्महाकरिकुलः क्वचिन्मत्तहरिव्रजः ॥ ३० ॥
kvacidbṛhatkalpataruḥ kvacinnirjalajaṅgamaḥ ,
kvacinmahākarikulaḥ kvacinmattaharivrajaḥ 30
30. kvacit bṛhat kalpataruḥ kvacit nirjalajaṅgamaḥ
kvacit mahākarikulaḥ kvacit mattaharivrajaḥ
30. kvacit bṛhat kalpataruḥ kvacit nirjalajaṅgamaḥ
kvacit mahākarikulaḥ kvacit mattaharivrajaḥ
30. Sometimes it features mighty wish-fulfilling trees, and at other times, waterless, moving creatures. Sometimes there are great herds of elephants, and at other times, multitudes of rutting lions.
क्वचिन्निर्भूतमुद्यातः क्वचिदुन्मत्तराक्षसः ।
क्वचित्करञ्जगहनः क्वचित्तालमहावनः ॥ ३१ ॥
kvacinnirbhūtamudyātaḥ kvacidunmattarākṣasaḥ ,
kvacitkarañjagahanaḥ kvacittālamahāvanaḥ 31
31. kvacit nirbhūtam udyātaḥ kvacit unmattarākṣasaḥ
kvacit karañjagahanaḥ kvacit tālamahāvanaḥ

31. Sometimes it is completely vanished, and at other times, newly emerged. Sometimes there are frenzied demons, and at other times, a dense karañja tree thicket, or a great tāla (palmyra) forest.
क्वचिद्व्योमोपमसराः क्वचिद्दीर्घमरुस्थलः ।
क्वचिन्नित्यभ्रमत्पांसुः क्वचित्सर्वर्तुकाननः ॥ ३२ ॥
kvacidvyomopamasarāḥ kvaciddīrghamarusthalaḥ ,

32. Sometimes it contains lakes resembling the sky, and at other times, vast deserts. Sometimes there is constantly swirling dust, and at other times, a forest that encompasses all seasons.
शिखरेषु शिलास्तस्य सामान्याचलसंनिभाः ।
सन्ति सुस्थितकल्पाभ्रा रत्नमय्योऽम्बरामलाः ॥ ३३ ॥
śikhareṣu śilāstasya sāmānyācalasaṃnibhāḥ ,
santi susthitakalpābhrā ratnamayyo'mbarāmalāḥ 33

33. Its peaks possess rocks that resemble ordinary mountains. These rocks are gem-filled, as clear as the sky, and adorned with stable, cloud-like formations.
क्षीरोदकार्कगौरीणां वनस्कन्धौकसामिव ।
विश्राम्यन्त्यनिशं यासु हरयो हरियोनयः ॥ ३४ ॥
kṣīrodakārkagaurīṇāṃ vanaskandhaukasāmiva ,
viśrāmyantyaniśaṃ yāsu harayo hariyonayaḥ 34
34. kṣīrodārkagauryoṇām vanaskandhauokasām iva

34. Upon these rocks, monkeys (harayaḥ), who are of monkey lineage (hariyonayaḥ), constantly rest, resembling those white, sun-colored, and fair-complexioned monkeys that dwell on forest branches.
तासामुत्तरदिग्भागे पूर्वशृङ्गशिलोदरे ।
निवसाम्यहमक्षीणवज्रसारसमत्वचि ॥ ३५ ॥
tāsāmuttaradigbhāge pūrvaśṛṅgaśilodare ,
nivasāmyahamakṣīṇavajrasārasamatvaci 35

35. I dwell in the northern part of those rocks, specifically within the interior of the rock on the eastern peak, where the surface is as firm as the undiminished essence of a diamond.
विधिना तत्र बद्धास्मि वसाम्युपलयन्त्रके ।
अत्रासंख्या मुने याता मन्ये युगगणा मम ॥ ३६ ॥
vidhinā tatra baddhāsmi vasāmyupalayantrake ,
atrāsaṃkhyā mune yātā manye yugagaṇā mama 36
36. vidhinā tatra baddhā asmi vasāmi upalayantrake
atra asaṃkhyā mune yātāḥ manye yugagaṇāḥ mama

36. By destiny (vidhinā), I am bound there, and I dwell in this rock-mechanism. O sage (mune), I believe that countless cycles of ages (yugagaṇāḥ) have passed for me here.
न केवलमहं बद्धा यावद्भर्तापि तत्र मे ।
बद्धः सायंतने पद्मकुङ्मले षट्पदो यथा ॥ ३७ ॥
na kevalamahaṃ baddhā yāvadbhartāpi tatra me ,
baddhaḥ sāyaṃtane padmakuṅmale ṣaṭpado yathā 37
37. na kevalam aham baddhā yāvat bhartā api tatra me
baddhaḥ sāyaṃtane padmakuṅmale ṣaṭpadaḥ yathā
37. aham na kevalam baddhā,
yāvat me bhartā api tatra baddhaḥ,
yathā ṣaṭpadaḥ sāyaṃtane padmakuṅmale (baddhaḥ bhavati).
37. Not only am I bound, but my husband (bhartā) is also bound there with me, just as a bee (ṣaṭpada) is trapped in an evening lotus bud.
तेन सार्धं मया भर्त्रा शिलाकोटरसंकटे ।
अनुभूताश्चिरं कालमत्र वर्षगणा गताः ॥ ३८ ॥
tena sārdhaṃ mayā bhartrā śilākoṭarasaṃkaṭe ,
anubhūtāściraṃ kālamatra varṣagaṇā gatāḥ 38
38. tena sārdham mayā bhartrā śilākoṭarasaṅkaṭe
anubhūtāḥ ciram kālam atra varṣagaṇāḥ gatāḥ
38. varṣagaṇāḥ atra ciram kālam tena bhartrā sārdham mayā śilākoṭarasaṅkaṭe anubhūtāḥ gatāḥ.
38. With him, my husband (bhartā), I have spent many years (varṣagaṇāḥ) here, enduring them for a long time within the difficult confines of a rock cavity.
अद्याप्यात्मैकदोषेण न हि मोक्षं लभावहे ।
चिरं तत्रैव तिष्ठावस्तथैवाबद्धभावनौ ॥ ३९ ॥
adyāpyātmaikadoṣeṇa na hi mokṣaṃ labhāvahe ,
ciraṃ tatraiva tiṣṭhāvastathaivābaddhabhāvanau 39
39. adya api ātmaikadoṣeṇa na hi mokṣam labhāvahe
ciram tatra eva tiṣṭhāvaḥ tathā eva ābaddhabhāvanau
39. adya api ātmaikadoṣeṇa hi na mokṣam labhāvahe.
ciram tatra eva tathā eva ābaddhabhāvanau tiṣṭhāvaḥ.
39. Even today, due to a single fault of the self (ātman), we are certainly unable to attain liberation (mokṣa). For a long time, we remain right there, with our feelings (bhāvanā) still bound, just as before.
पाषाणसंकटे तस्मिन्बद्धावावां न केवलम् ।
बद्धो यावदशेषेण परिवारोऽपि तत्र नौ ॥ ४० ॥
pāṣāṇasaṃkaṭe tasminbaddhāvāvāṃ na kevalam ,
baddho yāvadaśeṣeṇa parivāro'pi tatra nau 40
40. pāṣāṇasaṅkaṭe tasmin baddhau āvām na kevalam
baddhaḥ yāvat aśeṣeṇa parivāraḥ api tatra nau
40. na kevalam āvām tasmin pāṣāṇasaṅkaṭe baddhau,
yāvat nau aśeṣeṇa parivāraḥ api tatra baddhaḥ.
40. Not only are we two bound within that difficult rock cavity, but our entire (aśeṣeṇa) family (parivāraḥ) is also bound there with us.
पुराणपुरुषो बद्धो द्विजस्तत्रास्ति मे पतिः ।
एकस्थानान्न चलति जीवन्युगशतान्यसौ ॥ ४१ ॥
purāṇapuruṣo baddho dvijastatrāsti me patiḥ ,
ekasthānānna calati jīvanyugaśatānyasau 41

41. My husband is an ancient being (puruṣa), a bound twice-born (dvija) who resides there. He does not move from one place, living for hundreds of ages (yuga).
आबाल्याद्ब्रह्मचारी च श्रोत्रियः पाठकोऽलसः ।
एकान्त एक एवास्तेऽजिह्मवृत्तिरचापलः ॥ ४२ ॥
ābālyādbrahmacārī ca śrotriyaḥ pāṭhako'lasaḥ ,
ekānta eka evāste'jihmavṛttiracāpalaḥ 42

42. From childhood, he has been a celibate student (brahmacārī), learned in the Vedas, a reader, yet lazy. He remains alone in solitude, possessing an upright conduct and free from fickleness.
अहं व्यसनिनी भार्या तस्य वेदविदां वर ।
न निमेषं समर्थास्मि तं विना देहधारणे ॥ ४३ ॥
ahaṃ vyasaninī bhāryā tasya vedavidāṃ vara ,
na nimeṣaṃ samarthāsmi taṃ vinā dehadhāraṇe 43
43. aham vyasaninī bhāryā tasya vedavidām vara na
nimeṣam samarthā asmi tam vinā dehadhāraṇe

43. O best among the knowers of the Vedas, I am his unfortunate wife. Without him, I am not capable of sustaining my body even for a single moment.
शृणु तेन कथं ब्रह्मन्भार्याहं समुपार्जिता ।
कथं वृद्धिमयं यातः स्नेहोऽस्माकमकृत्रिमः ॥ ४४ ॥
śṛṇu tena kathaṃ brahmanbhāryāhaṃ samupārjitā ,
kathaṃ vṛddhimayaṃ yātaḥ sneho'smākamakṛtrimaḥ 44
44. śṛṇu tena katham brahman bhāryā aham samupārjitā

44. O Brahmin (brahman), listen to how I was obtained as a wife by him, and how our genuine affection (sneha) steadily grew.
तेन जातेन मद्भर्त्रा बालेनैव सता पुरा ।
किंचिज्ज्ञेन सतैकेन तिष्ठतात्मालयेऽमले ॥ ४५ ॥
tena jātena madbhartrā bālenaiva satā purā ,
kiṃcijjñena sataikena tiṣṭhatātmālaye'male 45
45. tena jātena madbhartrā bālena eva satā purā
kiṃcijñena satā ekena tiṣṭhatā ātma-ālaye amale

45. Long ago, my husband, having manifested as a mere child, a singular entity possessing little knowledge, resided in his pure abode of the self (ātman).
श्रोत्रियत्वानुरूपेण जाया मे जन्मशालिनी ।
कुतः संभवतीत्येव निर्णीय चिरचिन्तया ॥ ४६ ॥
śrotriyatvānurūpeṇa jāyā me janmaśālinī ,
kutaḥ saṃbhavatītyeva nirṇīya ciracintayā 46
46. śrotriyatva-anurūpeṇa jāyā me janmaśālinī
kutaḥ saṃbhavati iti eva nirṇīya ciracintayā
46. ciracintayā nirṇīya eva iti me śrotriyatva-anurūpeṇa

46. After lengthy deliberation, having ascertained, 'How indeed can a wife, possessing noble lineage and befitting my status as a Vedic scholar (śrotriya), come into existence?'
स्वयमेवानवद्याङ्गी तेन तामरसेक्षण ।
उत्पादितास्मि नाथेन ज्योत्स्नेव शशिनाऽमला ॥ ४७ ॥
svayamevānavadyāṅgī tena tāmarasekṣaṇa ,
utpāditāsmi nāthena jyotsneva śaśinā'malā 47
47. svayam eva anavadya-aṅgī tena tāmarasa-īkṣaṇa
utpāditā asmi nāthena jyotsnā iva śaśinā amalā
47. tāmarasa-īkṣaṇa tena nāthena svayam eva
anavadya-aṅgī utpāditā asmi amalā jyotsnā śaśinā iva
47. O lotus-eyed one, by that lord (nātha) himself, I was created, flawless in body, just as pure moonlight (jyotsnā) is produced by the moon (śaśin).
मनसा मानसीभार्या मन्दरोत्तमसुन्दरी ।
ततो वृद्धिं प्रयातास्मि वसन्त इव मञ्जरी ॥ ४८ ॥
manasā mānasībhāryā mandarottamasundarī ,
tato vṛddhiṃ prayātāsmi vasanta iva mañjarī 48
48. manasā mānasī-bhāryā mandara-uttama-sundarī
tataḥ vṛddhim prayātā asmi vasanta-mañjarī iva
48. manasā mānasī-bhāryā mandara-uttama-sundarī
tataḥ vasanta-mañjarī iva vṛddhim prayātā asmi
48. By his mind (manas), I, his mind-born wife (mānasī-bhāryā), was created as one supremely beautiful like the Mandara mountain. Thereafter, I attained growth, just as a blossom (mañjarī) flourishes in spring (vasanta).
सहजाम्बरसंछन्ना भूतानां चित्तहारिणी ।
पूर्णेन्दुबिम्बवदना द्यौरिवामलतारका ॥ ४९ ॥
sahajāmbarasaṃchannā bhūtānāṃ cittahāriṇī ,
pūrṇendubimbavadanā dyaurivāmalatārakā 49

49. Naturally adorned and captivating the hearts of all beings, her face is like the orb of the full moon, resembling the clear, starry sky.
कोरकोच्चस्तनभरा समग्ररसशालिनी ।

51. Constantly captivating the hearts of all living beings, she has eyes with pupils like a doe's, bestowing the intoxicating madness of love (madana).
लीलाविलासैकरता हेलावलितलोचना ।
गेयवाद्यप्रिया नित्यं न च तृप्तानुरागिणी ॥ ५२ ॥

52. She is entirely devoted to playful dalliance, with eyes that playfully glance. She is constantly fond of singing and instrumental music, always passionate yet never fully satisfied in her desires.
सौभाग्यभोगपरमा लक्ष्म्यलक्ष्म्योः प्रिया सखी ।
अनन्या मोहजालानामखिन्ना संपदापदोः ॥ ५३ ॥
saubhāgyabhogaparamā lakṣmyalakṣmyoḥ priyā sakhī ,

53. She is supremely dedicated to the enjoyment of good fortune, a beloved companion to both Lakshmi (fortune) and Alakshmi (misfortune). She is unique regarding the nets of delusion, and remains untroubled by both prosperity and adversity.
न केवलमहं गेहं धारयामि द्विजन्मनः ।
यावत्त्रैलोक्यसदनमिदमङ्ग बिभर्म्यहम् ॥ ५४ ॥
na kevalamahaṃ gehaṃ dhārayāmi dvijanmanaḥ ,
yāvattrailokyasadanamidamaṅga bibharmyaham 54

54. Oh dear one, I not only sustain the home of the twice-born (dvijanman), but I also bear this entire abode of the three worlds.
अहं कुलकरी भार्या कलत्रभरणक्षमा ।
त्रैलोक्यगृहसंभारधारणैकभरोद्वहा ॥ ५५ ॥
ahaṃ kulakarī bhāryā kalatrabharaṇakṣamā ,
trailokyagṛhasaṃbhāradhāraṇaikabharodvahā 55

55. I am the wife who upholds the family, capable of maintaining the household. I am the sole bearer of the burden of sustaining the collective provisions for the house of the three worlds.
अथाहं तरुणी जाता समुद्भिन्नोन्नतस्तनी ।
लतोल्ललद्गुलुच्छेव विलासरसशालिनी ॥ ५६ ॥

56. Then I became a young woman, with prominent, high breasts, splendid with the essence of charming playfulness, like a creeper swaying with clusters of blossoms.
पतिर्मा दीर्घसूत्रत्वाच्छ्रोत्रियत्वात्तपोरतः ।
कयाप्यपेक्षयाद्यापि न विवाहितवानिमाम् ॥ ५७ ॥
patirmā dīrghasūtratvācchrotriyatvāttaporataḥ ,
kayāpyapekṣayādyāpi na vivāhitavānimām 57
57. patiḥ mā dīrghasūtratvāt śrotriyatvāt tapaḥ rataḥ
kayā api apekṣayā adya api na vivāhitavān imām
57. mā patiḥ dīrghasūtratvāt śrotriyatvāt tapaḥ rataḥ
kayā api apekṣayā adya api imām na vivāhitavān
57. Because of his procrastination, his status as a Vedic scholar ("śrotriya"), and his devotion to spiritual austerity (tapas), my master has still not married me (this woman) even today, for some undisclosed reason.
तेन यौवनसंपन्नविलासरसशालिनी ।
तं विना व्यसनेनाहं दह्येऽग्नाविव पद्मिनी ॥ ५८ ॥
tena yauvanasaṃpannavilāsarasaśālinī ,
taṃ vinā vyasanenāhaṃ dahye'gnāviva padminī 58
58. tena yauvanasampannavilāsarasaśālinī tam
vinā vyasanena aham dahye agnau iva padminī
58. aham yauvanasampannavilāsarasaśālinī tena
tam vinā vyasanena agnau padminī iva dahye
58. I, who am endowed with the charm and delight of youth, am burning in anguish without him, just like a lotus plant burns in a fire.
शीतानिलविलोलासु नलिनीषु निरन्तरम् ।
अङ्गदाहमवाप्नोमि पूताङ्गारस्थलीष्विव ॥ ५९ ॥
śītānilavilolāsu nalinīṣu nirantaram ,
aṅgadāhamavāpnomi pūtāṅgārasthalīṣviva 59

59. Continuously, even amidst lotus plants swaying in the cool breeze, I experience a burning sensation throughout my body, as if I were on beds of glowing charcoal.
उद्यानावनयः सर्वाः पूर्णाः कुसुमवर्षणैः ।
संपन्नास्तप्तसिकताः शून्या मे मरुभूमयः ॥ ६० ॥
udyānāvanayaḥ sarvāḥ pūrṇāḥ kusumavarṣaṇaiḥ ,
saṃpannāstaptasikatāḥ śūnyā me marubhūmayaḥ 60
60. udyāna avanayaḥ sarvāḥ pūrṇāḥ kusuma varṣaṇaiḥ
sampannāḥ tapta sikatāḥ śūnyāḥ me marubhūmayaḥ
60. sarvāḥ udyāna avanayaḥ kusuma varṣaṇaiḥ pūrṇāḥ
me śūnyāḥ tapta sikatāḥ marubhūmayaḥ sampannāḥ
60. All the garden lands, though abundant with showers of flowers, have become for me desolate deserts with scorching sands.
जलकल्लोलकह्लारकमलोत्करकोमलाः ।
सरस्यः सारसारावसरसा मम नीरसाः ॥ ६१ ॥
jalakallolakahlārakamalotkarakomalāḥ ,
sarasyaḥ sārasārāvasarasā mama nīrasāḥ 61
61. jala-kallola-kahlāra-kamala-utkara-komalāḥ
sarasyah sāra-sāra-rava-sarasā mama nīrasāḥ
61. sarasyah jala-kallola-kahlāra-kamala-utkara-komalāḥ
sāra-sāra-rava-sarasā mama nīrasāḥ
61. To me, the lakes, soft with an abundance of white water lilies and lotuses tossed by water waves, and delightful with the calls of sarasa cranes, now appear joyless.
अहं पुष्करमन्दारकुमुदोत्करमालिता ।
भृशं दाहमवाप्नोमि कण्टकेष्विव दोलिता ॥ ६२ ॥
ahaṃ puṣkaramandārakumudotkaramālitā ,
bhṛśaṃ dāhamavāpnomi kaṇṭakeṣviva dolitā 62
62. aham puṣkara-mandāra-kumuda-utkara-mālitā
bhṛśam dāham avāpnomi kaṇṭakeṣu iva dolitā

62. Though I am adorned with garlands of abundant blue lotuses, mandāra flowers, and white water lilies, I experience intense burning, as if tormented (swung) on thorns.
कुमुदोत्पलकह्लारकदलीतल्पपालयः ।
मदङ्गसङ्गमाद्ग्रीष्ममर्मरा याति भस्मताम् ॥ ६३ ॥
kumudotpalakahlārakadalītalpapālayaḥ ,

63. kumuda-utpala-kahlāra-kadalī-talpa-pālayah
mat-aṅga-saṅgamāt grīṣma-marmarā yāti bhasmatām

63. From contact with my body, the summer's rustling sound, and even the rows of beds made from white water lilies, blue lotuses, kahlāra flowers, and banana plants, turn to ashes.
यत्कान्तमुचितं स्वादु विचित्रं चित्तहारि च ।
तदालोक्य भवाम्यन्तर्बाष्पपूर्णायतेक्षणा ॥ ६४ ॥
yatkāntamucitaṃ svādu vicitraṃ cittahāri ca ,
tadālokya bhavāmyantarbāṣpapūrṇāyatekṣaṇā 64
64. yat kāntam ucitam svādu vicitram citta-hāri ca
tat ālokya bhavāmi antar bāṣpa-pūrṇa-āyata-īkṣaṇā
64. yat kāntam ucitam svādu vicitram citta-hāri ca
tat ālokya antar bāṣpa-pūrṇa-āyata-īkṣaṇā bhavāmi
64. When I perceive that which is beautiful, fitting, sweet, wondrous, and charming to the mind, my wide eyes inwardly fill with tears.
व्यसनानलसंतप्ताः पतन्तो बाष्पबिन्दवः ।
छमच्छमिति मज्जन्ति कमलोत्पलपङ्क्तिषु ॥ ६५ ॥
vyasanānalasaṃtaptāḥ patanto bāṣpabindavaḥ ,
chamacchamiti majjanti kamalotpalapaṅktiṣu 65

65. My teardrops, hot from the fire of anguish, fall and sink with a 'chamach' sound into the rows of lotuses and water-lilies.

लालितोद्यानखण्डेषु मुखमाच्छाद्य रोदिमि ॥ ६६ ॥

पश्याम्यूष्माणमुज्झन्तं खदिराङ्गारभीषणम् ॥ ६७ ॥
tuṣāranikarākīrṇaṃ kadalīdalamaṇḍapam ,
paśyāmyūṣmāṇamujjhantaṃ khadirāṅgārabhīṣaṇam 67

67. I see the pavilion of banana leaves, which is covered with frost, but appears dreadfully hot like khadira charcoal, emitting heat.

68. Seeing a female crane, with her male companion, swaying on swings made of lotus stalks, I, with a distressed face, inwardly condemn my own youth.
रम्ये रोदिमि मध्यस्थे पदार्थे यामि सौम्यताम् ।
हृष्याम्यशोभने दीना न जाने किमहं स्थिता ॥ ६९ ॥
ramye rodimi madhyasthe padārthe yāmi saumyatām ,
hṛṣyāmyaśobhane dīnā na jāne kimahaṃ sthitā 69

69. When something is beautiful, I cry. When an object is neutral, I attain serenity. When something is unpleasant, I, wretched, rejoice. I do not know what kind of person I am.
दृष्टानि कुन्दमन्दारकुमुदानि हिमानि च ।
मया कामाग्निदग्धानां भस्मानीव दिशं प्रति ॥ ७० ॥
dṛṣṭāni kundamandārakumudāni himāni ca ,

70. By me, Kunda, Mandāra, and Kumuda flowers, and snow, were seen in every direction as if they were the ashes of those burnt by the fire of passion (kāma).

शय्या ममाङ्गचलनेन विशोषयन्त्या व्यर्थं गतानि नवयौवनवासराणि ॥ ७१ ॥

71. I dried up my bed, which was made of bluish sprouts, lotus stalks, creepers, lotuses, kahlāra lilies, kunda jasmine, plantain leaves, and mālatī flowers, by the movements of my limbs. Thus, the days of my fresh youth passed in vain.
