भगवंस्त्वादृशस्तां तामवस्थां च कथं गतः ।
कथं ध्यानप्रयोगेण तदा नोपशमं गतः ॥ १ ॥
vyādha uvāca ,
bhagavaṃstvādṛśastāṃ tāmavasthāṃ ca kathaṃ gataḥ ,
kathaṃ dhyānaprayogeṇa tadā nopaśamaṃ gataḥ 1
1. vyādhaḥ uvāca bhagavan tvādṛśaḥ tām tām avasthām ca katham
gataḥ katham dhyāna-prayogeṇa tadā na upaśamam gataḥ
1. vyādhaḥ uvāca bhagavan,
tvādṛśaḥ tām tām avasthām ca katham gataḥ? tadā dhyāna-prayogeṇa upaśamam katham na gataḥ?
1. The hunter said: "O revered one, how did someone like you come to this particular state? And how is it that even then you did not attain tranquility (upaśama) through the practice of meditation (dhyāna)?"
मुनिरुवाच ।
कल्पान्तेषु विनश्यन्ति नाशैर्नानाविधात्मभिः ।
जगन्ति भ्रान्तिरूपाणि नभस्याभासरूपिभिः ॥ २ ॥
muniruvāca ,
kalpānteṣu vinaśyanti nāśairnānāvidhātmabhiḥ ,
jaganti bhrāntirūpāṇi nabhasyābhāsarūpibhiḥ 2
2. muniḥ uvāca kalpānteṣu vinaśyanti nāśaiḥ nānāvidhātmbhiḥ
jaganti bhrāntirūpāṇi nabhasī ābhāsarūpibhiḥ
2. muniḥ uvāca kalpānteṣu bhrāntirūpāṇi jaganti
nānāvidhātmbhiḥ nāśaiḥ nabhasī ābhāsarūpibhiḥ vinaśyanti
2. The sage said: At the ends of the cosmic cycles (kalpa), the worlds, which are inherently illusory, completely perish through various kinds of destructions, much like mere appearances in the sky.
कदाचित्क्रमशो नाशः कल्पान्ते संप्रवर्तते ।
अशङ्कितं कदाचिद्द्रागेकधादिविकारतः ॥ ३ ॥
kadācitkramaśo nāśaḥ kalpānte saṃpravartate ,
aśaṅkitaṃ kadāciddrāgekadhādivikārataḥ 3
3. kadācit kramaśaḥ nāśaḥ kalpānte saṃpravartate
aśaṅkitaṃ kadācit drāk ekadhādivikārataḥ
3. kadācit kramaśaḥ nāśaḥ kalpānte saṃpravartate kadācit
aśaṅkitaṃ drāk ekadhādivikārataḥ (saṃpravartate)
3. Sometimes, destruction occurs gradually at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa). At other times, it happens suddenly and unexpectedly due to a single, primal transformation.
तदा द्रागित्येव यदा विकृतं वारि तत्तथा ।
तेन यावत्सरन्त्याद्यं तावन्नीता जलैः सुराः ॥ ४ ॥
tadā drāgityeva yadā vikṛtaṃ vāri tattathā ,
tena yāvatsarantyādyaṃ tāvannītā jalaiḥ surāḥ 4
4. tadā drāk iti eva yadā vikṛtaṃ vāri tat tathā
tena yāvat saranti ādyaṃ tāvat nītāḥ jalaiḥ surāḥ
4. tadā yadā vāri drāk iti eva tathā vikṛtaṃ (bhavati),
tena yāvat ādyaṃ saranti tāvat surāḥ jalaiḥ nītāḥ (bhavanti)
4. Then, when the primordial waters are suddenly transformed in that manner, by that very change, the gods are carried away by those waters for as long as the primal flow (of creation and dissolution) continues.
अन्यच्च विपिनाधीश कालः सर्वंकषो ह्ययम् ।
यत्र काले ततस्तस्मिंस्त्ववश्यंभावि तत्तथा ॥ ५ ॥
anyacca vipinādhīśa kālaḥ sarvaṃkaṣo hyayam ,
yatra kāle tatastasmiṃstvavaśyaṃbhāvi tattathā 5
5. anyat ca vipinādhīśa kālaḥ sarvaṃkaṣaḥ hi ayaṃ
yatra kāle tataḥ tasmin tu avaśyaṃbhāvi tat tathā
5. anyat ca vipinādhīśa ayaṃ kālaḥ hi sarvaṃkaṣaḥ yatra kāle
(yat) avaśyaṃbhāvi tat tataḥ tasmin tu tathā (bhavati)
5. And furthermore, O Lord of the forest, this (cycle of) time is truly all-consuming. Whatever is inevitable at a certain time, that very thing occurs precisely in that manner at that time.
बलं बुद्धिश्च तेजश्च क्षयकाल उपस्थिते ।
विपर्यस्यति सर्वत्र सर्वथा महतामपि ॥ ६ ॥
balaṃ buddhiśca tejaśca kṣayakāla upasthite ,
viparyasyati sarvatra sarvathā mahatāmapi 6
6. balam buddhiḥ ca tejaḥ ca kṣayakāle upasthite
viparyasyati sarvatra sarvathā mahatām api
6. kṣayakāle upasthite balam buddhiḥ ca tejaḥ ca
sarvatra sarvathā mahatām api viparyasyati
6. When the time of destruction approaches, strength, intellect, and splendor become perverted everywhere and in every way, even for great individuals.
अन्यच्च विपिनाधीश मयैतत्तव वर्णितम् ।
स्वप्नदृष्टं किल स्वप्ने किं न संभवतीह कम् ॥ ७ ॥
anyacca vipinādhīśa mayaitattava varṇitam ,
svapnadṛṣṭaṃ kila svapne kiṃ na saṃbhavatīha kam 7
7. anyat ca vipinādhīśa mayā etat tava varṇitam
svapnadṛṣṭam kila svapne kim na saṃbhavati iha kam
7. vipinādhīśa anyat ca mayā tava etat varṇitam
svapnadṛṣṭam kila svapne iha kim na saṃbhavati kam
7. Moreover, O lord of the forest, what I have described to you was seen in a dream. Indeed, what is there that cannot occur in a dream here?
व्याध उवाच ।
असदेतद्यदि विभो स्वप्नसंभ्रममात्रकम् ।
कथितेन तदैतेन कोऽर्थः कल्याणकोविद ॥ ८ ॥
vyādha uvāca ,
asadetadyadi vibho svapnasaṃbhramamātrakam ,
kathitena tadaitena ko'rthaḥ kalyāṇakovida 8
8. vyādhaḥ uvāca asat etat yadi vibho svapnasaṃbhramamātrakam
kathitena tadā etena kaḥ arthaḥ kalyāṇakovida
8. vyādhaḥ uvāca vibho kalyāṇakovida yadi etat
svapnasaṃbhramamātrakam asat tadā kathitena etena kaḥ arthaḥ
8. The hunter said: "O master, if this is merely a delusion from a dream, then what is the purpose of what you have narrated, O expert in welfare?"
मुनिरुवाच ।
त्वद्बोधनात्मकं कार्यं महदस्त्यत्र बुद्धिमन् ।
एतद्भ्रमात्मकं वेत्ति भवान्सत्यं तु मे श्रृणु ॥ ९ ॥
muniruvāca ,
tvadbodhanātmakaṃ kāryaṃ mahadastyatra buddhiman ,
etadbhramātmakaṃ vetti bhavānsatyaṃ tu me śrṛṇu 9
9. muniḥ uvāca tvadbodhanātmakam kāryam mahat asti atra
buddhiman etat bhramātmakam vetti bhavān satyam tu me śṛṇu
9. muniḥ uvāca buddhiman atra tvadbodhanātmakam mahat kāryam
asti bhavān etat bhramātmakam vetti tu me satyam śṛṇu
9. The sage said: "O intelligent one, there is a great purpose here meant for your instruction. You perceive this as merely an illusion, but indeed, listen to my truth."
अनन्तरमहं तस्मिन्मत्तैकार्णवरंहसि ।
जन्तोरोजः स्थितः स्वप्ने भ्रान्तं भ्रान्तो व्यलोकय ॥ १० ॥
anantaramahaṃ tasminmattaikārṇavaraṃhasi ,
jantorojaḥ sthitaḥ svapne bhrāntaṃ bhrānto vyalokaya 10
10. anantaram aham tasmin mattaikārṇavaraṃhasi jantoḥ
ojaḥ sthitaḥ svapne bhrāntam bhrāntaḥ vyalokayam
10. anantaram aham tasmin mattaikārṇavaraṃhasi jantoḥ
ojaḥ sthitaḥ svapne bhrāntaḥ bhrāntam vyalokayam
10. Afterwards, in that rushing current of the single, tumultuous ocean, I, existing as the essence of a living being, observed myself, bewildered and wandering, as if in a dream.
यावत्ससकलं वारि क्वापि निर्गन्तुमुद्यतम् ।
विक्षुब्धवज्रवित्रस्तसपक्षाद्रीन्द्रवृन्दवत् ॥ ११ ॥
yāvatsasakalaṃ vāri kvāpi nirgantumudyatam ,
vikṣubdhavajravitrastasapakṣādrīndravṛndavat 11
11. yāvat sasakalam vāri kvāpi nirgantum udyatam
vikṣubdhavajravitrastasapakṣādrīndravṛndavat
11. yāvat sasakalam vāri kvāpi nirgantum udyatam
vikṣubdhavajravitrastasapakṣādrīndravṛndavat
11. As that entire expanse of water prepared to flow out somewhere, it was like a multitude of winged, mighty mountains, terrified by the agitated thunderbolt.
अथ क्षणेन सलिलं तदशेषेण निर्ययौ ।
वीच्यग्रस्फुटिताकारैर्देवैस्तारकिताम्बरम् ॥ १३ ॥
atha kṣaṇena salilaṃ tadaśeṣeṇa niryayau ,
vīcyagrasphuṭitākārairdevaistārakitāmbaram 13
13. atha kṣaṇena salilam tat aśeṣeṇa niryayau
vīcyagrasphuṭitākāraiḥ devaiḥ tārakitāmbaram
13. atha kṣaṇena tat aśeṣeṇa salilam niryayau vīcyagrasphuṭitākāraiḥ
devaiḥ (ambaram) tārakitāmbaram (abhavat)
13. Then, in an instant, that entire mass of water completely flowed out. The sky became studded with stars due to the gods, whose forms had burst forth from the crests of the waves.
तारागणैश्च पातालगतैर्मणिमयोदरम् ।
आवर्तेषु परावृत्तैः स्फारमद्रिजरत्तृणैः ॥ १४ ॥
tārāgaṇaiśca pātālagatairmaṇimayodaram ,
āvarteṣu parāvṛttaiḥ sphāramadrijarattṛṇaiḥ 14
14. tārāgaṇaiḥ ca pātālagataiḥ maṇimayodaram
āvarteṣu parāvṛttaiḥ sphāram adrijarat tṛṇaiḥ
14. (sa ekārṇavaḥ) maṇimayodaram sphāram adrijarat (ca āsīt); ca pātālagataiḥ tārāgaṇaiḥ (pūrṇaḥ āsīt); (tatra) āvarteṣu parāvṛttaiḥ tṛṇaiḥ (ca pūrṇaḥ āsīt).
14. Its interior was jewel-studded, vast, and capable of eroding mountains; and it was (filled) with star clusters that had descended into the netherworld, as well as with grasses whirled around in its eddies.
लब्धवानुह्यमानोऽहं कंचिद्दैववशात्तटम् ।
अवसं तमवष्टभ्य शिखरप्रान्तसंनिभम् ॥ १५ ॥
labdhavānuhyamāno'haṃ kaṃciddaivavaśāttaṭam ,
avasaṃ tamavaṣṭabhya śikharaprāntasaṃnibham 15
15. labdhavān uhyamānaḥ aham kañcit daivavaśāt taṭam
avasam tam avaṣṭabhya śikharaprāntasaṃnibham
15. uhyamānaḥ aham daivavaśāt kañcit taṭam labdhavān
tam śikharaprāntasaṃnibham avaṣṭabhya avasam
15. Carried along, I, by the force of destiny, found a certain shore. Clinging to that shore, which resembled a mountain peak's edge, I resided there.
मध्योह्यमानकल्पाभ्रनीलशैवालजालकम् ।
विद्युद्गोरोचनाम्भोदनीलनीरजनिर्भरम् ॥ १६ ॥
madhyohyamānakalpābhranīlaśaivālajālakam ,
vidyudgorocanāmbhodanīlanīrajanirbharam 16
16. madhyohyamānakalpābhranīlaśaivālajālakam
vidyudgorocanāmbhodanīlanīrajanirbharam
16. (sa ekārṇavaḥ) madhyohyamānakalpābhranīlaśaivālajālakam (āsīt); vidyudgorocanāmbhodanīlanīrajanirbharam (ca āsīt).
16. It had thickets of blue algae, resembling the clouds of cosmic dissolution, floating in its midst; and it was abundant with blue lotuses, whose radiance was like lightning, gorocanā (a bright yellow pigment), and dark clouds.
स्फुरत्सीकरनीहारमेघाद्रिकृतदिक्तटम् ।
उल्लोलद्वीचिसंदिग्धवहत्कल्पद्रुमव्रजम् ॥ १७ ॥
sphuratsīkaranīhārameghādrikṛtadiktaṭam ,
ulloladvīcisaṃdigdhavahatkalpadrumavrajam 17
17. sphuratsīkaranīhārameghādrikṛtadiktatam
ulloladvīcisaṃdigdhavahatkalpadrumavrajām
17. (sa ekārṇavaḥ) sphuratsīkaranīhārameghādrikṛtadiktatam (āsīt); ulloladvīcisaṃdigdhavahatkalpadrumavrajām (ca āsīt).
17. Its directions were defined by glittering spray, mist, clouds, and mountains; and it had multitudes of wish-fulfilling trees that seemed to be carried away by its surging waves.
अथैकार्णवखातोऽसावभवच्छुष्ककोटरः ।
क्वचिद्गलितसह्याद्रि क्वचित्संशीकमन्दरः ॥ १८ ॥
athaikārṇavakhāto'sāvabhavacchuṣkakoṭaraḥ ,
kvacidgalitasahyādri kvacitsaṃśīkamandaraḥ 18
18. atha ekārṇavakhātaḥ asau abhavat śuṣkakoṭaraḥ
kvacit galitasahyādri kvacit saṃśīkamandaraḥ
18. atha asau ekārṇavakhātaḥ śuṣkakoṭaraḥ abhavat.
kvacit galitasahyādri (ca abhavat),
kvacit saṃśīkamandaraḥ (ca abhavat).
18. Then, this excavated bed of the cosmic ocean (ekārṇava) became a dry hollow. In some parts, it contained the disintegrated Sahya mountain, and in other parts, the decayed Mandara mountain.
क्वचित्कङ्कनिमग्नेन्दुयमवासवतक्षकः ।
क्वचित्पङ्कनिमग्नाधःशाखकल्पद्रुमोत्करः ॥ १९ ॥
kvacitkaṅkanimagnenduyamavāsavatakṣakaḥ ,
kvacitpaṅkanimagnādhaḥśākhakalpadrumotkaraḥ 19
19. kvacit kaṅkanimagnenduyamavāsavatakṣakaḥ
kvacit paṅkanimagnādhaḥśākhakalpadrumotkaraḥ
19. kvacit kaṅkanimagnenduyamavāsavatakṣakaḥ
kvacit paṅkanimagnādhaḥśākhakalpadrumotkaraḥ
19. Somewhere, the moon, Yama, Indra, and Takṣaka are deeply immersed among vultures and herons. Elsewhere, there is a pile of wish-fulfilling trees (kalpadruma) with their downward-facing branches submerged in mud.
क्वचित्कमलवत्कीर्णलोकपालशिरःकरः ।
क्वचित्पङ्कजविश्रान्तरुधिरह्रदपाटलः ॥ २० ॥
kvacitkamalavatkīrṇalokapālaśiraḥkaraḥ ,
kvacitpaṅkajaviśrāntarudhirahradapāṭalaḥ 20
20. kvacit kamalavatkīrṇalokapālaśiraḥkaraḥ
kvacit paṅkajaviśrāntarudhirahrada-pāṭalaḥ
20. kvacit kamalavatkīrṇalokapālaśiraḥkaraḥ
kvacit paṅkajaviśrāntarudhirahrada-pāṭalaḥ
20. Somewhere, the heads and hands of the world-guardians (lokapāla) are scattered like lotuses. Elsewhere, pale-red pools of blood are resting upon lotuses.
क्वचिदाकण्ठनिर्मग्नक्वणद्विद्याधरीगणः ।
क्वचित्स्वप्नमृतेभाभयाम्योग्रमहिषावृतः ॥ २१ ॥
kvacidākaṇṭhanirmagnakvaṇadvidyādharīgaṇaḥ ,
kvacitsvapnamṛtebhābhayāmyogramahiṣāvṛtaḥ 21
21. kvacit ākaṇṭhanirmagnakvaṇadvidyādharīgaṇaḥ
kvacit svapnamṛtebhābhayāmyogramahiṣāvṛtaḥ
21. kvacit ākaṇṭhanirmagnakvaṇadvidyādharīgaṇaḥ
kvacit svapnamṛtebhābhayāmyogramahiṣāvṛtaḥ
21. Somewhere, there is a host of female celestial beings (vidyādharī) submerged up to their necks and making sounds. Elsewhere, it is surrounded by Yama's fierce buffaloes, which resemble elephants dead in a dream.
क्वचित्सन्नमहाकायगरुडामरपर्वतः ।
क्वचिन्मत्तमहासेतुर्यमदण्डेन भूजुषा ॥ २२ ॥
kvacitsannamahākāyagaruḍāmaraparvataḥ ,
kvacinmattamahāseturyamadaṇḍena bhūjuṣā 22
22. kvacit sannamahākāyagaruḍāmaraparvataḥ
kvacit matta-mahā-setuḥ yama-daṇḍena bhūjuṣā
22. kvacit sannamahākāyagaruḍāmaraparvataḥ
kvacit matta-mahā-setuḥ bhūjuṣā yama-daṇḍena
22. Somewhere, gigantic-bodied Garuḍas, gods, and mountains lie collapsed. Elsewhere, a great embankment, now frenzied, exists due to Yama's staff pervading the earth.
क्वचित्प्रमृतवैरिञ्चहंससस्मितपङ्कभूः ।
क्वचित्पङ्कविनिर्मग्नदेहार्धामरवारणः ॥ २३ ॥
kvacitpramṛtavairiñcahaṃsasasmitapaṅkabhūḥ ,
kvacitpaṅkavinirmagnadehārdhāmaravāraṇaḥ 23
23. kvacit pramṛta-vairiñca-haṃsa-sasmita-paṅka-bhūḥ
kvacit paṅka-vinirmagna-deha-ardha-amara-vāraṇaḥ
23. kvacit pramṛta-vairiñca-haṃsa-sasmita-paṅka-bhūḥ
kvacit paṅka-vinirmagna-deha-ardha-amara-vāraṇaḥ
23. Somewhere, there is a place whose mud holds Brahmā's dead swans, seemingly smiling. Elsewhere, there are divine elephants with half their bodies deeply immersed in mud.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र सानुं प्राप्याश्रमे श्रमात् ।
विश्रान्तोस्मि यदा तेन भृशं निद्राजगाम माम् ॥ २४ ॥
etasminnantare tatra sānuṃ prāpyāśrame śramāt ,
viśrāntosmi yadā tena bhṛśaṃ nidrājagāma mām 24
24. etasmin antare tatra sānum prāpya āśrame śramāt
viśrāntaḥ asmi yadā tena bhṛśam nidrā ājagāma mām
24. etasmin antare tatra śramāt āśrame sānum prāpya yadā viśrāntaḥ asmi,
tena bhṛśam nidrā mām ājagāma.
24. Meanwhile, when I reached a ridge in that hermitage (āśrama) and rested there due to fatigue, intense sleep overcame me.
ततः सुषुप्तनिद्रान्तस्तया वासनयान्वितः ।
तं तादृगेव कल्पान्तमपश्यं स्वौजसि स्थितः ॥ २५ ॥
tataḥ suṣuptanidrāntastayā vāsanayānvitaḥ ,
taṃ tādṛgeva kalpāntamapaśyaṃ svaujasi sthitaḥ 25
25. tataḥ suṣupta-nidrā-antaḥ tayā vāsanayā anvitaḥ
tam tādṛk eva kalpa-antam apaśyam sva-ojasi sthitaḥ
25. tataḥ tayā vāsanayā anvitaḥ suṣupta-nidrā-antaḥ sva-ojasi sthitaḥ tam tādṛk eva kalpa-antam apaśyam.
25. Then, having emerged from that deep sleep, I, endowed with that latent impression (vāsanā) and situated in my own splendor, saw exactly such an end of the eon (kalpānta).
दृष्ट्वा तद्द्विगुणं दुःखं चिरेणात्राहमाकुलः ।
प्रबुद्धो दृष्टवान्सानुं तमेवास्य हृदि स्थितम् ॥ २६ ॥
dṛṣṭvā taddviguṇaṃ duḥkhaṃ cireṇātrāhamākulaḥ ,
prabuddho dṛṣṭavānsānuṃ tamevāsya hṛdi sthitam 26
26. dṛṣṭvā tat dviguṇam duḥkham cireṇa atra aham ākulaḥ
prabuddhaḥ dṛṣṭavān sānum tam eva asya hṛdi sthitam
26. atra tat dviguṇam duḥkham dṛṣṭvā cireṇa aham ākulaḥ.
prabuddhaḥ asya hṛdi sthitam tam eva sānum dṛṣṭavān.
26. Having seen that twofold suffering, I became distressed after a long time here. Then, awakened, I saw that very ridge, situated within my heart.
अथ तत्र द्वितीयेऽह्नि भास्करोदयसुन्दरम् ।
सलोकाकाशभूशैलं भुवनं दृष्टवानहम् ॥ २७ ॥
atha tatra dvitīye'hni bhāskarodayasundaram ,
salokākāśabhūśailaṃ bhuvanaṃ dṛṣṭavānaham 27
27. atha tatra dvitīye ahni bhāskarodayasundaram
salokākāśabhūśailam bhuvanam dṛṣṭavān aham
27. atha dvitīye ahni tatra aham bhāskarodayasundaram
salokākāśabhūśailam bhuvanam dṛṣṭavān
27. Then, on that second day, I saw the universe there, beautiful with the rising sun, complete with its worlds, sky, earth, and mountains.
द्यौः क्षमा वायुराकाशं पर्वताः सरितो दिशः ।
इति मे चेतसो जातं पत्रादि विटपादिव ॥ २८ ॥
dyauḥ kṣamā vāyurākāśaṃ parvatāḥ sarito diśaḥ ,
iti me cetaso jātaṃ patrādi viṭapādiva 28
28. dyauḥ kṣamā vāyuḥ ākāśam parvatāḥ saritaḥ diśaḥ
iti me cetasaḥ jātam patra ādi viṭapāt iva
28. dyauḥ kṣamā vāyuḥ ākāśam parvatāḥ saritaḥ diśaḥ iti etāni me cetasaḥ jātam,
viṭapāt patra ādi iva
28. The sky, earth, wind, space, mountains, rivers, and directions – all these arose from my consciousness (cetas), just as leaves and so forth emerge from a tree.
ततस्तस्मिंस्तथा दृष्टे भूतले तैः पदार्थकैः ।
व्यवहारं प्रवृत्तोऽहं किंचिद्विस्मृतधीरितः ॥ २९ ॥
tatastasmiṃstathā dṛṣṭe bhūtale taiḥ padārthakaiḥ ,
vyavahāraṃ pravṛtto'haṃ kiṃcidvismṛtadhīritaḥ 29
29. tatas tasmin tathā dṛṣṭe bhūtale taiḥ padārthakaiḥ
vyavahāram pravṛttaḥ aham kiñcit vismṛtadhīḥ itaḥ
29. tatas tasmin tathā dṛṣṭe bhūtale taiḥ padārthakaiḥ
kiñcit vismṛtadhīḥ itaḥ aham vyavahāram pravṛttaḥ
29. Then, on that earth thus perceived with those objects, I began to interact, though my understanding (dhī) was somewhat forgotten.
जातस्य मेऽद्य वर्षाणि षोडशैष पिता मम ।
इयं मातास्पदं चेदमिति मे प्रतिमोदभूत् ॥ ३० ॥
jātasya me'dya varṣāṇi ṣoḍaśaiṣa pitā mama ,
iyaṃ mātāspadaṃ cedamiti me pratimodabhūt 30
30. jātasya me adya varṣāṇi ṣoḍaśa eṣa pitā mama
iyam mātā āspadam ca idam iti me pratimoda abhūt
30. adya jātasya me ṣoḍaśa varṣāṇi (abhūt).
eṣa mama pitā,
iyam mātā,
ca idam āspadam iti me pratimoda abhūt.
30. Today, sixteen years have passed since my birth. 'This is my father, this is my mother, and this is the dwelling place' – such thoughts brought joy (pratimoda) to me.
अपश्यं ग्रामकं कंचित्कंचिच्च ब्राह्मणाश्रमम् ।
किंचिद्गेहं तथा कश्चिद्वन्धुः कस्मिंश्चिदाश्रमे ॥ ३१ ॥
apaśyaṃ grāmakaṃ kaṃcitkaṃcicca brāhmaṇāśramam ,
kiṃcidgehaṃ tathā kaścidvandhuḥ kasmiṃścidāśrame 31
31. apaśyam grāmakaṃ kañcit kañcit ca brāhmaṇāśramam
kiñcit gehaṃ tathā kaścit bandhuḥ kasmin cit āśrame
31. apaśyam kañcit grāmakaṃ ca kañcit brāhmaṇāśramam
tathā kiñcit gehaṃ ca kaścit bandhuḥ kasmin cit āśrame
31. I saw some small village, and also some hermitage of brahmins. Likewise, I saw some house and a certain relative in some hermitage.
अथ मे तिष्ठतः सार्धं बन्धुभिर्ग्राममन्दिरे ।
अहोरात्रेषु गच्छत्सु जाग्रदादींस्तदेव सत् ॥ ३२ ॥
atha me tiṣṭhataḥ sārdhaṃ bandhubhirgrāmamandire ,
ahorātreṣu gacchatsu jāgradādīṃstadeva sat 32
32. atha me tiṣṭhataḥ sārdhaṃ bandhubhiḥ grāmamandire
ahorātreṣu gacchatṣu jāgrad-ādīn tat eva sat
32. atha me bandhubhiḥ sārdhaṃ grāmamandire tiṣṭhataḥ
ahorātreṣu gacchatṣu tat eva sat jāgrad-ādīn
32. Then, as I remained with my relatives in the village house, and as days and nights passed, my existence (sat) was reduced to just those states like waking and the rest.
ततः कालवशात्तत्र प्राक्तनी बोधधीर्मम ।
विस्मृता तादृशाभ्यासादहो तस्येव मत्स्यता ॥ ३३ ॥
tataḥ kālavaśāttatra prāktanī bodhadhīrmama ,
vismṛtā tādṛśābhyāsādaho tasyeva matsyatā 33
33. tataḥ kālavaśāt tatra prāktanī bodhadhīḥ mama
vismṛtā tādṛśābhyāsāt aho tasya iva matsyatā
33. tataḥ tatra kālavaśāt mama prāktanī bodhadhīḥ
vismṛtā tādṛśābhyāsāt aho tasya iva matsyatā
33. Then, due to the influence of time, my previous enlightened understanding (bodhadhī) was forgotten there, because of such habituation (abhyāsa). Alas, it was like a fish's nature (matsyatā) [which makes it forget its past]!
इत्यहं ग्रामवास्तव्यः संपन्नो ब्राह्मणस्तदा ।
देहमात्रकबद्धास्थो दूरीकृतविवेकभूः ॥ ३४ ॥
ityahaṃ grāmavāstavyaḥ saṃpanno brāhmaṇastadā ,
dehamātrakabaddhāstho dūrīkṛtavivekabhūḥ 34
34. iti aham grāmavāstavyaḥ sampannaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ
tadā dehamātrakabaddhāsthaḥ dūrīkṛtavivekabhūḥ
34. iti aham tadā grāmavāstavyaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ sampannaḥ
dehamātrakabaddhāsthaḥ dūrīkṛtavivekabhūḥ
34. Thus, I became a brahmin dwelling in the village, with my attachment fixed solely on the physical body, and having removed the very ground of my discernment (viveka).
शरीरमात्रात्मवपुर्दारमात्रानुरञ्जितः ।
वासनामात्रसारात्मा धनमात्रैकतत्परः ॥ ३५ ॥

35. He is one whose entire being is merely his body (ātman), who is attached only to his wife, whose inner essence (ātman) consists solely of latent impressions (vāsanā), and who is exclusively intent on wealth.
जीर्णगोमात्रकधनः संरोपितलतावृतिः ।
संचिताग्न्यवनिप्राणिरुपार्जितकमण्डलुः ॥ ३६ ॥
jīrṇagomātrakadhanaḥ saṃropitalatāvṛtiḥ ,
saṃcitāgnyavaniprāṇirupārjitakamaṇḍaluḥ 36

36. His wealth consists merely of an old cow, his fence is made of planted creepers, and his water-pot (kamaṇḍalu) is acquired from collected fire, earth, and living beings (resources).
चलवृक्षकबद्धास्थो लोकाचाररतः सदा ।
गृहपार्श्वगतानीलशाद्वलस्थलिकास्थितिः ॥ ३७ ॥
calavṛkṣakabaddhāstho lokācārarataḥ sadā ,
gṛhapārśvagatānīlaśādvalasthalikāsthitiḥ 37

37. He makes his abode tied to a flimsy tree, always adheres to popular customs, and his dwelling is a small, bright green grassy patch situated by the side of a house.
शाकशाकायतारामरचनानीतवासरः ।
सरिद्ह्रदनदीतीर्थसरसि स्नानतत्परः ॥ ३८ ॥
śākaśākāyatārāmaracanānītavāsaraḥ ,
saridhradanadītīrthasarasi snānatatparaḥ 38

38. His days are spent in collecting and preparing vegetables, and in observations related to stars and the new moon, and he is devoted to bathing in rivers, lakes, sacred bathing places (tīrtha), and reservoirs.
गोमयान्नजलाम्ब्वग्निकाष्ठेष्टा कष्टसंचयी ।
इदं कार्यमिदं नेति पाशाभ्यां विवशीकृतः ॥ ३९ ॥
gomayānnajalāmbvagnikāṣṭheṣṭā kaṣṭasaṃcayī ,
idaṃ kāryamidaṃ neti pāśābhyāṃ vivaśīkṛtaḥ 39
39. gomayānnajalāmbu agnikāṣṭheṣṭā kaṣṭasaṃcayī
idam kāryam idam na iti pāśābhyām vivaśīkṛtaḥ
39. gomayānnajalāmbu agnikāṣṭheṣṭā kaṣṭasaṃcayī
idam kāryam idam na iti pāśābhyām vivaśīkṛtaḥ
39. Straining to collect things like cow-dung, food, water, fire, and wood, he is overpowered by the two bonds of 'this must be done' and 'this must not be done'.
इति मे जीवतस्तत्र संवत्सरशतं गतम् ।
एकदाभ्यागतो दूरात्तापसोऽतिथिरात्मवान् ॥ ४० ॥
iti me jīvatastatra saṃvatsaraśataṃ gatam ,
ekadābhyāgato dūrāttāpaso'tithirātmavān 40
40. iti me jīvataḥ tatra saṃvatsaraśatam gatam
ekadā abhyāgataḥ dūrāt tāpasaḥ atithiḥ ātmanvān
40. iti me jīvataḥ tatra saṃvatsaraśatam gatam
ekadā dūrāt ātmanvān tāpasaḥ atithiḥ abhyāgataḥ
40. Thus, while I lived there, a hundred years passed. One day, a self-possessed (ātmanvān) ascetic (tāpasa) arrived from afar as a guest.
पूजितोऽसौ विशश्राम मृद्गृहे स्नानपूर्वकम् ।
भुक्तवाञ्छयने स्थित्वा रात्रौ वर्णितवान्कथाम् ॥ ४१ ॥
pūjito'sau viśaśrāma mṛdgṛhe snānapūrvakam ,
bhuktavāñchayane sthitvā rātrau varṇitavānkathām 41
41. pūjitaḥ asau viśaśrāma mṛdgṛhe snānapūrvakam
bhuktavān śayane sthitvā rātrau varṇitavān kathām
41. pūjitaḥ asau snānapūrvakam mṛdgṛhe viśaśrāma

41. Having been honored, he rested in the mud house after taking a bath. At night, after eating and settling on a couch, he narrated a story.
नानादिग्देशशैलोर्वीव्यवहारमनोहरे ।
कथाप्रसङ्गे कस्मिंश्चिन्नानाविधरसाश्रये ॥ ४२ ॥
nānādigdeśaśailorvīvyavahāramanohare ,
kathāprasaṅge kasmiṃścinnānāvidharasāśraye 42
42. nānādigdeśaśailaurvīvyavahāramanohare

42. During a certain charming narrative (kathāprasaṅga) that detailed events from various directions, countries, mountains, and lands, and which was replete with diverse sentiments (rasa).
सर्वं चिन्मात्रमेवेदमनन्तमविकारि च ।
जगत्तयेव कचति यथास्थितमपि स्थितम् ॥ ४३ ॥
sarvaṃ cinmātramevedamanantamavikāri ca ,
jagattayeva kacati yathāsthitamapi sthitam 43
43. sarvam cinmātram eva idam anantam avikāri ca
jagat trayam iva kacati yathāsthitam api sthitam
43. idam sarvam cinmātram eva anantam avikāri ca
jagat trayam iva kacati api yathāsthitam sthitam
43. All this is indeed pure consciousness, infinite and unchangeable. The world appears as if real, even though it truly remains (rests) in its original state.
इत्यहं बोधितस्तेन बोधैकघनतां गतः ।
स्मृतवांस्तमशेषेण वृत्तान्तं धारणावशात् ॥ ४४ ॥
ityahaṃ bodhitastena bodhaikaghanatāṃ gataḥ ,
smṛtavāṃstamaśeṣeṇa vṛttāntaṃ dhāraṇāvaśāt 44
44. iti aham bodhitaḥ tena bodhaikaghanatām gataḥ
smṛtavān tam aśeṣeṇa vṛttāntam dhāraṇāvaśāt
44. tena aham bodhitaḥ iti bodhaikaghanatām gataḥ
dhāraṇāvaśāt tam vṛttāntam aśeṣeṇa smṛtavān
44. Thus, enlightened by him, I attained the state of being solely consciousness (bodha). I completely remembered that entire account (vṛttānta) by the power of retention (dhāraṇā).
तदास्यं निर्गमद्वारमथ जानामि नो यदा ।
विस्तीर्णे भुवने यस्मिन्भूम्यब्ध्यद्रिसरिद्वृते ॥ ४६ ॥
tadāsyaṃ nirgamadvāramatha jānāmi no yadā ,
vistīrṇe bhuvane yasminbhūmyabdhyadrisaridvṛte 46
46. tat āsyam nirgamadvāram atha jānāmi no yadā
vistīrṇe bhuvane yasmin bhūmyabdhyadrisarid vṛte
46. yadā aham tat āsyam nirgamadvāram no jānāmi atha
yasmin bhūmyabdhyadrisaridvṛte vistīrṇe bhuvane
46. Then, when I did not know that its mouth was the exit gate, (I was) in that vast world (bhuvana), which was encompassed by lands, oceans, mountains, and rivers.
तदा तमत्यजन्नेव देशं बन्धुजनावृतम् ।
तस्य प्राणं प्रविष्टोऽहं निर्गन्तुं पवनं बहिः ॥ ४७ ॥
tadā tamatyajanneva deśaṃ bandhujanāvṛtam ,
tasya prāṇaṃ praviṣṭo'haṃ nirgantuṃ pavanaṃ bahiḥ 47
47. tadā tam atyajan eva deśam bandhujanāvṛtam tasya
prāṇam praviṣṭaḥ aham nirgantum pavanam bahiḥ
47. aham tadā tam bandhujanāvṛtam deśam atyajan eva,
tasya prāṇam praviṣṭaḥ,
pavanam bahiḥ nirgantum.
47. Then, without abandoning that very region surrounded by relatives, I entered its life-breath (prāṇa) in order to emerge outside as wind (pavana).
इहस्थस्य विराजोऽस्य बाह्यमाभ्यन्तरं तथा ।
अन्यजं सर्वमीक्षेऽहमिति निर्णीय तादृशम् ॥ ४८ ॥
ihasthasya virājo'sya bāhyamābhyantaraṃ tathā ,
anyajaṃ sarvamīkṣe'hamiti nirṇīya tādṛśam 48
48. iha-sthasya virājaḥ asya bāhyam ābhyantaram tathā
anya-jam sarvam īkṣe aham iti nirṇīya tādṛśam
48. aham iha-sthasya asya virājaḥ bāhyam ābhyantaram tathā anya-jam sarvam īkṣe iti,
tādṛśam nirṇīya.
48. Having thus decided (nirṇīya) in such a way (tādṛśam) that I perceive all external, internal, and also what is born from others, pertaining to this omnipresent (virāj) being situated here...
स्मृतवानात्मवृत्तान्तं यस्याहमुदरे स्थितः ।
तं विराडपमाशङ्क्य तस्मान्निर्गन्तुमुद्यतः ॥ ४९ ॥
smṛtavānātmavṛttāntaṃ yasyāhamudare sthitaḥ ,
taṃ virāḍapamāśaṅkya tasmānnirgantumudyataḥ 49
49. smṛtavān ātmavṛttāntam yasya aham udare sthitaḥ
tam virāṭ apamā āśaṅkya tasmāt nirgantum udyataḥ
49. aham yasya udare sthitaḥ tam ātmavṛttāntam smṛtavān
tam virāṭ apamā āśaṅkya tasmāt nirgantum udyataḥ
49. I remembered my own story (ātman-vṛttānta), (the story of him) in whose belly I was situated. Considering that (belly) to be the unparalleled (apamā) Cosmic Person (Virāṭ), I prepared to exit from it.
पवनस्कन्धमासाद्य प्राप्य तन्मुखकोटरम् ।
बहिर्वातरथेनाहं निर्गतो दृष्टवान्पुरः ॥ ५० ॥
pavanaskandhamāsādya prāpya tanmukhakoṭaram ,
bahirvātarathenāhaṃ nirgato dṛṣṭavānpuraḥ 50
50. pavana-skandham āsādya prāpya tat-mukha-koṭaram
bahiḥ vātarathena aham nirgataḥ dṛṣṭavān puraḥ
50. aham pavana-skandham āsādya,
tat-mukha-koṭaram prāpya,
vātarathena bahiḥ nirgataḥ puraḥ dṛṣṭavān.
50. Having reached the body of wind (pavana), and having entered its mouth-like opening, I emerged outside by means of the chariot of wind (pavana) and saw ahead.
यावत्तथैव मद्देहो बद्धपद्मासनः स्थितः ।
क्वापि मुन्याश्रमः शिष्यैः पालितो गिरिकन्दरे ॥ ५१ ॥
yāvattathaiva maddeho baddhapadmāsanaḥ sthitaḥ ,
kvāpi munyāśramaḥ śiṣyaiḥ pālito girikandare 51
51. yāvat tathā eva mat-dehaḥ baddha-padmāsanaḥ sthitaḥ
kvāpi muni-āśramaḥ śiṣyaiḥ pālitaḥ giri-kandare
51. yāvat tathā eva mat-dehaḥ baddha-padmāsanaḥ sthitaḥ,
kvāpi giri-kandare śiṣyaiḥ pālitaḥ muni-āśramaḥ.
51. Meanwhile, my body remained situated in the lotus posture (padmāsana) exactly as it was, while somewhere else, a sage's hermitage (āśrama) was maintained by disciples in a mountain cave.
पुरो मे तिष्ठतां तेषां मत्संरक्षणकर्मणाम् ।
मुहूर्तमात्रं च गतः कालश्चान्ते निवासिनाम् ॥ ५२ ॥
puro me tiṣṭhatāṃ teṣāṃ matsaṃrakṣaṇakarmaṇām ,
muhūrtamātraṃ ca gataḥ kālaścānte nivāsinām 52
52. puras me tiṣṭhatām teṣām mat-saṃrakṣaṇa-karmaṇām |
muhūrta-mātram ca gataḥ kālaḥ ca ante nivāsinām ||
52. teṣām mat-saṃrakṣaṇa-karmaṇām puras me tiṣṭhatām ca ante nivāsinām (ca),
muhūrta-mātram kālaḥ gataḥ.
52. For those whose task is my protection, standing before me, and for those who dwell at the end (of life), only a moment's time has passed.
हृदयं संप्रविष्टोऽसौ यस्याहं स पुमानपि ।
पृष्ठेनोत्सवलब्धेन शेते तृप्तोऽन्धसा सुखम् ॥ ५३ ॥
hṛdayaṃ saṃpraviṣṭo'sau yasyāhaṃ sa pumānapi ,
pṛṣṭhenotsavalabdhena śete tṛpto'ndhasā sukham 53
53. hṛdayam sam-praviṣṭaḥ asau yasya aham sa pumān api |
pṛṣṭhena utsava-labdhena śete tṛptaḥ andhasa sukham ||
53. asau (saḥ) pumān api,
yasya aham (asmi),
hṛdayam sam-praviṣṭaḥ.
saḥ (pumān) utsava-labdhena pṛṣṭhena andhasa tṛptaḥ sukham śete.
53. He, whose very being I am, that man, entered the heart. He rests happily, satisfied by sustenance, enjoying the ease he has found.
तदाश्चर्यं मया दृष्ट्वा नोक्तं किंच न कस्यचित् ।
पुनस्तस्यैव हृदयं प्रविष्टः कौतुकादहम् ॥ ५४ ॥
tadāścaryaṃ mayā dṛṣṭvā noktaṃ kiṃca na kasyacit ,
punastasyaiva hṛdayaṃ praviṣṭaḥ kautukādaham 54
54. tadā āścaryam mayā dṛṣṭvā na uktam kiṃcit na kasyacit
| punar tasya eva hṛdayam praviṣṭaḥ kautukāt aham ||
54. mayā tat āścaryam dṛṣṭvā (sat),
kiṃcit na kasyacit na uktam.
aham punar eva tasya hṛdayam kautukāt praviṣṭaḥ.
54. Having witnessed that marvel, I said nothing to anyone. Out of curiosity, I then entered his very heart again.
प्राप्तोऽस्म्योजःप्रदेशं तं तस्य तस्मिन्हृदन्तरे ।
अवेक्षितुं स्वबन्धूंस्तान्व्याप्तो वासनया तया ॥ ५५ ॥
prāpto'smyojaḥpradeśaṃ taṃ tasya tasminhṛdantare ,
avekṣituṃ svabandhūṃstānvyāpto vāsanayā tayā 55
55. prāptaḥ asmi ojaḥ-pradeśam tam tasya tasmin hṛd-antare
| avekṣitum sva-bandhūn tān vyāptaḥ vāsanayā tayā ||
55. aham (asmi) tasya tasmin hṛd-antare tam ojaḥ-pradeśam prāptaḥ (asmi).
(aham) tayā vāsanayā vyāptaḥ (asmi) tān sva-bandhūn avekṣitum.
55. Within his heart, I reached that region of vital energy (ojas), filled with that very desire to behold my own kinsmen.
यावत्तत्र युगस्यान्तः संप्रवृत्तोऽतिदारुणः ।
भुवनं तद्विपर्यासमागतं सह संस्थया ॥ ५६ ॥
yāvattatra yugasyāntaḥ saṃpravṛtto'tidāruṇaḥ ,
bhuvanaṃ tadviparyāsamāgataṃ saha saṃsthayā 56
56. yāvat tatra yugasya antaḥ saṃpravṛttaḥ atidāruṇaḥ
bhuvanaṃ tat viparyāsam āgataṃ saha saṃsthayā
56. yāvat tatra atidāruṇaḥ yugasya antaḥ saṃpravṛttaḥ,
tat bhuvanaṃ saṃsthayā saha viparyāsam āgataṃ.
56. While an extremely dreadful end of the age (yuga) had commenced there, that world, along with its entire structure, underwent a complete transformation.
अन्य एवाचलास्तत्र वसुधान्या च संस्थिता ।
अन्य एव ककुब्भेदस्तथान्या भुवनस्थितिः ॥ ५७ ॥
anya evācalāstatra vasudhānyā ca saṃsthitā ,
anya eva kakubbhedastathānyā bhuvanasthitiḥ 57
57. anya eva acalāḥ tatra vasudhā anyā ca saṃsthitā
anya eva kakubbhedaḥ tathā anyā bhuvanasthitiḥ
57. tatra anya eva acalāḥ,
anyā ca vasudhā saṃsthitā; tathā anya eva kakubbhedaḥ,
anyā (eva) bhuvanasthitiḥ.
57. Indeed, other mountains and a different earth were situated there. Similarly, the divisions of the cardinal points were different, and so was the entire arrangement of the world.
ते बन्धवः स च ग्रामः स भूभागः स दिक्तटः ।
न जाने क्व गतं सर्वं व्यूह्य नीतमिवानिलैः ॥ ५८ ॥
te bandhavaḥ sa ca grāmaḥ sa bhūbhāgaḥ sa diktaṭaḥ ,
na jāne kva gataṃ sarvaṃ vyūhya nītamivānilaiḥ 58
58. te bandhavaḥ sa ca grāmaḥ sa bhūbhāgaḥ sa diktaṭaḥ
na jāne kva gataṃ sarvaṃ vyūhya nītam iva anilaiḥ
58. te bandhavaḥ,
saḥ ca grāmaḥ,
saḥ bhūbhāgaḥ,
saḥ diktaṭaḥ - sarvaṃ kva gataṃ,
anilaiḥ vyūhya nītam iva,
na jāne.
58. Those relatives, that village, that region of land, and that entire horizon – I do not know where all of it has gone, as if scattered and carried away by the winds.
तदा पश्यामि भुवनं यावदन्यदवस्थितम् ।
अपूर्वसंनिवेशं तज्जगदन्यदिवोदितम् ॥ ५९ ॥
tadā paśyāmi bhuvanaṃ yāvadanyadavasthitam ,
apūrvasaṃniveśaṃ tajjagadanyadivoditam 59
59. tadā paśyāmi bhuvanaṃ yāvat anyat avasthitam
apūrvasaṃniveśaṃ tat jagat anyat iva uditam
59. tadā,
yāvat,
anyat avasthitam bhuvanaṃ paśyāmi.
tat jagat apūrvasaṃniveśaṃ anyat iva uditam.
59. Then I behold a world, entirely different and established. That universe, with its unprecedented and novel arrangement, appeared as if it were another, newly arisen.
तपन्ति द्वादशादित्याः प्रज्वलन्ति दिशो दश ।
शीताश्यानाम्बुवच्छैलाः प्रवृत्ता गलितुं बलात् ॥ ६० ॥
tapanti dvādaśādityāḥ prajvalanti diśo daśa ,
śītāśyānāmbuvacchailāḥ pravṛttā galituṃ balāt 60
60. tapanti dvādaśa ādityāḥ prajvalanti diśaḥ daśa
śītāśyānāmbuvat śailāḥ pravṛttāḥ galituṃ balāt
60. dvādaśa ādityāḥ tapanti,
daśa diśaḥ prajvalanti.
śītāśyānāmbuvat śailāḥ balāt galituṃ pravṛttāḥ.
60. The twelve suns burn intensely, and the ten directions blaze. Mountains, like frozen, solidified water, have forcibly begun to melt.
अद्रावद्रौ दिशिदिशि ज्वलन्ति वनपङ्क्तयः ।
दग्धाः स्मृतिपदं याताः समस्ता रत्नभूतयः ॥ ६१ ॥

61. On every single mountain and in every direction, rows of forests are burning. All the jewel-like treasures, having been burnt, have now become mere memories.
सर्व एवाब्धयः शुष्का महावाताः पुरःस्थिताः ।
अङ्गारराशितां यातं भूमण्डलमशेषतः ॥ ६२ ॥
sarva evābdhayaḥ śuṣkā mahāvātāḥ puraḥsthitāḥ ,
aṅgārarāśitāṃ yātaṃ bhūmaṇḍalamaśeṣataḥ 62
62. sarve eva abdhayaḥ śuṣkāḥ mahāvātāḥ puraḥsthitāḥ
aṅgāraraśitāṃ yātaṃ bhūmaṇḍalam aśeṣataḥ

62. All the oceans have indeed dried up, and great winds are standing forth. The entire sphere of the earth has completely turned into a heap of embers.
पातालतो भूतलतोऽथ दिग्भ्यो ज्वाला विनिर्गन्तुमनुप्रवृत्ताः ।
संध्याभ्रवच्चाशु बभूव विश्वं ज्वालामये मण्डलमेकमेव ॥ ६३ ॥
pātālato bhūtalato'tha digbhyo jvālā vinirgantumanupravṛttāḥ ,
saṃdhyābhravaccāśu babhūva viśvaṃ jvālāmaye maṇḍalamekameva 63
63. pātālataḥ bhūtalataḥ atha digbhyaḥ
jvālāḥ vinirgantuṃ anupravṛttāḥ
sandhyābhravat ca āśu babhūva
viśvaṃ jvālāmaye maṇḍalam ekam eva

atha digbhyaḥ jvālāḥ vinirgantuṃ anupravṛttāḥ.
ca āśu viśvaṃ sandhyābhravat jvālāmaye ekam maṇḍalam eva babhūva.
63. From the netherworld, from the earth's surface, and from the directions, flames began to burst forth. And quickly, the entire universe became a single fiery sphere, just like a sunset cloud.
ज्वालामये सद्मनि हेमपद्मकोशे भ्रमद्भृङ्ग इव प्रविष्टः ।
ततोऽहमाराच्छलभक्रमेण न चाप्तवान्दाहविकारदुःखम् ॥ ६४ ॥

64. Like a wandering bee entering the calyx of a golden lotus, I entered that fiery abode. Then, immediately, like a moth, I did not experience the pain and suffering (duḥkha) of burning and transformation.
ज्वालामये साधु महाम्बुवाहे भ्रमाम्यहं विद्युदिवानिलात्मा ।
ज्वालापरिस्पन्दविलोलवर्ष्मा स्थलाब्जखण्डभ्रमरोपमश्रीः ॥ ६५ ॥

65. Indeed, in that fiery great cloud, I wander like lightning. I am of the nature of wind, with a body trembling and quivering from the flickering flames, and my splendor is like that of a bee hovering over fragments of a land-lotus.
