परिखिन्नासु सर्वासु राज्ञीषु नृपसद्मसु ।
स्थितासु सावधानासु रामचेष्टासु सर्वतः ॥ २ ॥

2. While all the queens, thoroughly dejected, remained in the royal palaces, attentive everywhere to Rāma's activities...
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु विश्वामित्र इति श्रुतः ।
महर्षिरभ्यगाद्द्रष्टुं तमयोध्यानराधिपम् ॥ ३ ॥
etasminneva kāle tu viśvāmitra iti śrutaḥ ,
maharṣirabhyagāddraṣṭuṃ tamayodhyānarādhipam 3
3. etasmin eva kāle tu viśvāmitraḥ iti śrutaḥ
maharṣiḥ abhyagāt draṣṭum tam ayodhyānarādhipam
3. At this very time, the renowned great sage Viśvāmitra arrived to see that king of Ayodhyā.
तस्य यज्ञोऽथ रक्षोभिस्तथा विलुलुपे किल ।
मायावीर्यबलोन्मत्तैर्धर्मकार्यस्य धीमतः ॥ ४ ॥
tasya yajño'tha rakṣobhistathā vilulupe kila ,
māyāvīryabalonmattairdharmakāryasya dhīmataḥ 4
4. tasya yajñaḥ atha rakṣobhiḥ tathā vilulupe kila
māyāvīryabalounmattaiḥ dharmakāryasya dhīmataḥ
4. Then, that wise sage's ritual (dharma) (yajña) was indeed disturbed by Rākṣasas, who were maddened by their illusory power (māyā) and strength.
रक्षार्थं तस्य यज्ञस्य द्रष्टुमैच्छत्स पार्थिवम् ।
नहि शक्नोत्यविघ्नेन समाप्तुं स मुनिः क्रतुम् ॥ ५ ॥
rakṣārthaṃ tasya yajñasya draṣṭumaicchatsa pārthivam ,
nahi śaknotyavighnena samāptuṃ sa muniḥ kratum 5
5. rakṣārtham tasya yajñasya draṣṭum aicchat saḥ pārthivam
| na hi śaknoti avighnena samāptum saḥ muniḥ kratum ||
5. saḥ muniḥ tasya yajñasya rakṣārtham pārthivam draṣṭum
aicchat nahi saḥ muniḥ avighnena kratum samāptum śaknoti
5. For the protection of that Vedic ritual (yajña), he desired to see the king. Indeed, that sage was unable to complete the Vedic ritual (kratu) without obstacles.
ततस्तेषां विनाशार्थमुद्यतस्तपसां निथिः ।
विश्वामित्रो महातेजा अयोध्यामभ्यगात्पुरीम् ॥ ६ ॥
tatasteṣāṃ vināśārthamudyatastapasāṃ nithiḥ ,
viśvāmitro mahātejā ayodhyāmabhyagātpurīm 6
6. tataḥ teṣām vināśārtham udyataḥ tapasām nidhiḥ
viśvāmitraḥ mahātejāḥ ayodhyām abhyagāt purīm
6. Therefore, for the destruction of those (Rākṣasas), Viśvāmitra, who was a treasure of asceticism (tapas) and immensely radiant, set out for the city of Ayodhyā.
स राज्ञो दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी द्वाराध्यक्षानुवाच ह ।
शीघ्रमाख्यात मां प्राप्तं कौशिकं गाधिनः सुतम् ॥ ७ ॥
sa rājño darśanākāṅkṣī dvārādhyakṣānuvāca ha ,
śīghramākhyāta māṃ prāptaṃ kauśikaṃ gādhinaḥ sutam 7
7. saḥ rājñaḥ darśanākāṅkṣī dvārādhyakṣān uvāca ha
śīghram ākhyāta mām prāptam kauśikam gādhinaḥ sutam
7. Desirous of seeing the king, he said to the doorkeepers, "Quickly announce my arrival; I am Kauśika, the son of Gādhi."
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा द्वास्था राजगृहं ययुः ।
संभ्रान्तमनसः सर्वे तेन वाक्येन चोदिताः ॥ ८ ॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā dvāsthā rājagṛhaṃ yayuḥ ,
saṃbhrāntamanasaḥ sarve tena vākyena coditāḥ 8
8. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā dvāsthāḥ rājagṛham yayuḥ
saṃbhrāntamanasaḥ sarve tena vākyena coditāḥ
8. Having heard his words, all the doorkeepers, their minds agitated, hastened to the king's palace, impelled by that command.
ते गत्वा राजसदनं विश्वामित्रमृषिं ततः ।
प्राप्तमावेदयामासुः प्रतीहाराः पतेस्तदा ॥ ९ ॥
te gatvā rājasadanaṃ viśvāmitramṛṣiṃ tataḥ ,
prāptamāvedayāmāsuḥ pratīhārāḥ patestadā 9
9. te gatvā rājasadanam viśvāmitram ṛṣim tataḥ
prāptam āvedayāmāsuḥ pratīhārāḥ pateḥ tadā
9. Having then gone to the king's palace, the doorkeepers announced to their master (the king) that the sage Viśvāmitra had arrived.
अथास्थानगतं भूपं राजमण्डलमालिनम् ।
समुपेत्य त्वरायुक्तो याष्टीकोऽसौ व्यजिज्ञपत् ॥ १० ॥
athāsthānagataṃ bhūpaṃ rājamaṇḍalamālinam ,
samupetya tvarāyukto yāṣṭīko'sau vyajijñapat 10
10. atha āsthānagatam bhūpam rājamaṇḍalamālinam
samupetya tvarāyuktaḥ yāṣṭīkaḥ asau vyajijñapat
10. Then, that hurried chamberlain, the staff-bearer, having approached the king who was seated in his assembly hall and adorned with a retinue of kings, announced (the arrival).
देव द्वारि महातेजा बालभास्करभासुरः ।
ज्वालारुणजटाजूटः पुमाञ्छ्रीमानवस्थितः ॥ ११ ॥
deva dvāri mahātejā bālabhāskarabhāsuraḥ ,
jvālāruṇajaṭājūṭaḥ pumāñchrīmānavasthitaḥ 11
11. deva dvāri mahātejāḥ bālabhāskarabhāsuraḥ
jvālāruṇajaṭājūṭaḥ pumān śrīmān avasthitaḥ
11. O King, at the door stood a man of immense splendor, shining brilliantly like the morning sun. He possessed a mass of matted hair, reddish like flames, and was truly glorious.
सभासुरपताकान्तं साश्वेभपुरुषायुधम् ।
कृतवांस्तं प्रदेशं यस्तेजोभिः कीर्णकाञ्चनम् ॥ १२ ॥
sabhāsurapatākāntaṃ sāśvebhapuruṣāyudham ,
kṛtavāṃstaṃ pradeśaṃ yastejobhiḥ kīrṇakāñcanam 12
12. sabhasurapatākāntam sāśvebhapuruṣāyudham
kṛtavān tam pradeśam yaḥ tejobhiḥ kīrṇakāñcanam
12. Through his immense radiance (tejas), he made that entire area - which was adorned with divine banners and filled with horses, elephants, men, and weapons - appear as if it were entirely strewn with gold.
वीक्ष्यमाणे तु याष्टीके निवेदयति राजनि ।
विश्वामित्रो मुनिः प्राप्त इत्यनुद्धतया गिरा ॥ १३ ॥
vīkṣyamāṇe tu yāṣṭīke nivedayati rājani ,
viśvāmitro muniḥ prāpta ityanuddhatayā girā 13
13. vīkṣyamāṇe tu yāṣṭīke nivedayati rājani
viśvāmitraḥ muniḥ prāptaḥ iti anuddhatayā girā
13. As the mace-bearer (yāṣṭika) was observing, he announced to the king, with an unagitated voice, 'The sage (muni) Viśvāmitra has arrived.'
इति याष्टीकवचनमाकर्ण्य नृपसत्तमः ।
स समन्त्री ससामन्तः प्रोत्तस्थौ हेमविष्टरात् ॥ १४ ॥
iti yāṣṭīkavacanamākarṇya nṛpasattamaḥ ,
sa samantrī sasāmantaḥ prottasthau hemaviṣṭarāt 14
14. iti yāṣṭīkavacanam ākarṇya nṛpasattamaḥ saḥ
samantrī sasāmantaḥ prottasthau hemaviṣṭarāt
14. Having heard these words from the mace-bearer (yāṣṭika), that most excellent king, accompanied by his ministers and feudatories, immediately rose from his golden seat.
पदातिरेव सहसा राज्ञां वृन्देन मालितः ।
वसिष्ठवामदेवाभ्यां सह सामन्तसंस्तुतः ॥ १५ ॥
padātireva sahasā rājñāṃ vṛndena mālitaḥ ,
vasiṣṭhavāmadevābhyāṃ saha sāmantasaṃstutaḥ 15
15. padātiḥ eva sahasā rājñām vṛndena mālitaḥ
vasiṣṭhavāmadevābhyām saha sāmantasaṃstutaḥ
15. Suddenly, (he), appearing merely as a foot-soldier, was encircled by a multitude of kings and, accompanied by Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, was praised by their subordinate rulers.
जगाम तत्र यत्रासौ विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
ददर्श मुनिशार्दूलं द्वारभूमाववस्थितम् ॥ १६ ॥
jagāma tatra yatrāsau viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
dadarśa muniśārdūlaṃ dvārabhūmāvavasthitam 16
16. jagāma tatra yatra asau viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
dadarśa muniśārdūlam dvārabhūmau avasthitam
16. He went to the place where the great sage Viśvāmitra was present. There, he saw the foremost among sages (Viśvāmitra) standing at the entrance.
केनापि कारणेनोर्वीतलमर्कमुपागतम् ।
ब्राह्मेण तेजसाक्रान्तं क्षात्रेण च महौजसा ॥ १७ ॥
kenāpi kāraṇenorvītalamarkamupāgatam ,
brāhmeṇa tejasākrāntaṃ kṣātreṇa ca mahaujasā 17
17. kena api kāraṇena urvītalam arkam upāgatam
brāhmeṇa tejasā ākrāntam kṣātreṇa ca mahaujasā
17. As if the very sun had descended to the surface of the earth for some reason, he was enveloped by both the spiritual radiance of a Brahmin and the immense power of a warrior.
जराजरठया नित्यं तपःप्रसररूक्षया ।
जटावल्या वृतस्कन्धं ससंध्याभ्रमिवाचलम् ॥ १८ ॥
jarājaraṭhayā nityaṃ tapaḥprasararūkṣayā ,
jaṭāvalyā vṛtaskandhaṃ sasaṃdhyābhramivācalam 18
18. jarājaraṭhayā nityam tapaḥprasararūkṣayā
jaṭāvalyā vṛtaskandham sasandhyābhram iva acalam
18. His shoulders were covered by a mass of matted locks, which were always stiff and rough from the intensity of his austerities (tapas) and worn with age, making him resemble a mountain enveloped by twilight clouds.
उपशान्तं च कान्तं च दीप्तमप्रतिघाति च ।
निभृतं चोर्जिताकारं दधानं भास्वरं वपुः ॥ १९ ॥
upaśāntaṃ ca kāntaṃ ca dīptamapratighāti ca ,
nibhṛtaṃ corjitākāraṃ dadhānaṃ bhāsvaraṃ vapuḥ 19
19. upaśāntam ca kāntam ca dīptam apratighāti ca
nibhṛtam ca ūrjitākāram dadhānam bhāsvaram vapuḥ
19. Bearing a brilliant form (vapuḥ) that is tranquil, beautiful, radiant, unhindered, firm, and majestic in appearance.
पेशलेनातिभीमेन प्रसन्नेनाकुलेन च ।
गम्भीरेणातिपूर्णेन तेजसा रञ्जितप्रभम् ॥ २० ॥
peśalenātibhīmena prasannenākulena ca ,
gambhīreṇātipūrṇena tejasā rañjitaprabham 20
20. peśalena atibhīmena prasannena ākulena ca
gambhīreṇa atipūrṇena tejasā rañjitaprabham
20. Its luster was illumined by a radiance (tejas) that was both graceful and extremely formidable, serene yet vibrant, profound, and utterly complete.
अनन्तजीवितदशासखीमेकामनिन्दिताम् ।
धारयन्तं करे श्लक्ष्णां कुण्डीमम्लानमानसम् ॥ २१ ॥
anantajīvitadaśāsakhīmekāmaninditām ,
dhārayantaṃ kare ślakṣṇāṃ kuṇḍīmamlānamānasam 21
21. anantajīvitadaśāsakhīm ekām aninditām
dhārayantam kare ślakṣṇām kuṇḍīm amlānamānasam
21. Bearing in hand a smooth, faultless water-pot (kuṇḍī) - a singular companion for the state of eternal life - with an unfading spirit (mānasa).
करुणाक्रान्तचेतत्तवात्प्रसन्नैर्मधुराक्षरैः ।
वीक्षणैरमृतेनेव संसिञ्चन्तमिमाः प्रजाः ॥ २२ ॥
karuṇākrāntacetattavātprasannairmadhurākṣaraiḥ ,
vīkṣaṇairamṛteneva saṃsiñcantamimāḥ prajāḥ 22
22. karuṇākrāntacetattvāt prasannaiḥ madhurākṣaraiḥ
vīkṣaṇaiḥ amṛtena iva saṃsiñcantam imāḥ prajāḥ
22. From a mind (cetas) overcome by compassion, he showers these beings (prajāḥ) as if with nectar through his serene and gentle glances.
युक्तयज्ञोपवीताङ्ग धवलप्रोन्नतस्रुवम् ।
अनन्तं विस्मयं चान्तः प्रयच्छन्तमिवेक्षितुः ॥ २३ ॥
yuktayajñopavītāṅga dhavalapronnatasruvam ,
anantaṃ vismayaṃ cāntaḥ prayacchantamivekṣituḥ 23
23. yuktayajñopavītāṅga dhavalapronnatasruvam anantam
vismayam ca antaḥ prayacchantam iva īkṣituḥ
23. With his body adorned by the sacred thread (yajñopavīta) and holding a bright, uplifted sacrificial ladle, he was as if inwardly bestowing infinite wonder upon the observer.
सुनिमालोक्य भूपालो दूरादेवानताकृतिः ।
प्रणनाम गलन्मौलिमणिमानितभूतलम् ॥ २४ ॥
sunimālokya bhūpālo dūrādevānatākṛtiḥ ,
praṇanāma galanmaulimaṇimānitabhūtalam 24
24. munim ālokya bhūpālaḥ dūrāt eva ānatākṛtiḥ
praṇanāma galanmaulimaṇimānitabhūtalam
24. Having seen the sage (muni) from afar, the king, with a bowed posture, prostrated himself, rendering the ground revered by the jewels falling from his crown.
मुनिरप्यवनीनाथं भास्वानिव शतक्रतुम् ।
तत्राभिवादयांचक्रे मधुरोदारया गिरा ॥ २५ ॥
munirapyavanīnāthaṃ bhāsvāniva śatakratum ,
tatrābhivādayāṃcakre madhurodārayā girā 25
25. muniḥ api avanīnātham bhāsvān iva śatakratum
tatra abhivādayāñcakre madhura udārayā girā
25. The sage (muni) also, just as the sun (bhāsvan) salutes Indra (śatakratu), offered salutations there to the lord of the earth with a sweet and dignified voice.
ततो वसिष्ठप्रमुखाः सर्व एव द्विजातयः ।
स्वागतादिक्रमेणैनं पूजयामासुरादृताः ॥ २६ ॥
tato vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ sarva eva dvijātayaḥ ,
svāgatādikrameṇainaṃ pūjayāmāsurādṛtāḥ 26
26. tataḥ vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ sarve eva dvijātayaḥ
svāgatādikrameṇa enam pūjayāmāsuḥ ādṛtāḥ
26. Then all the twice-born (dvijātayaḥ), led by Vasiṣṭha, respectfully honored him with greetings and other customary rituals.
दशरथ उवाच ।
अशङ्कितोपनीतेन भास्वता दर्शनेन ते ।
साधो स्वनुगृहीताः स्मो रविणेवाम्बुजाकराः ॥ २७ ॥
daśaratha uvāca ,
aśaṅkitopanītena bhāsvatā darśanena te ,
sādho svanugṛhītāḥ smo raviṇevāmbujākarāḥ 27
27. daśarathaḥ uvāca aśaṅkitopanītena bhāsvatā darśanena
te sādho svanugṛhītāḥ smaḥ raviṇā iva ambujākarāḥ
27. Daśaratha said: "O sage (sādho), we have been greatly blessed by your glorious and unexpectedly granted presence, just as lotus ponds are blessed by the sun."
यदनादि यदक्षुण्णं यदपायविवर्जितम् ।
तदानन्दसुखं प्राप्तं मया त्वद्दर्शनान्मुने ॥ २८ ॥
yadanādi yadakṣuṇṇaṃ yadapāyavivarjitam ,
tadānandasukhaṃ prāptaṃ mayā tvaddarśanānmune 28
28. yat anādi yat akṣuṇṇam yat apāyavivarjitam tat
ānandasukham prāptam mayā tvat darśanāt mune
28. O sage (mune), through your presence, I have attained that blissful joy which is without beginning, unimpaired, and devoid of destruction.
अद्य वर्तामहे नूनं धन्यानां धुरि धर्मतः ।
भवदागमनस्येमे यद्वयं लक्ष्यमागताः ॥ २९ ॥
adya vartāmahe nūnaṃ dhanyānāṃ dhuri dharmataḥ ,
bhavadāgamanasyeme yadvayaṃ lakṣyamāgatāḥ 29
29. adya vartāmahe nūnam dhanyānām dhuri dharmataḥ
bhavat āgamanasya ime yat vayam lakṣyam āgatāḥ
29. Indeed, today we truly stand at the forefront of the fortunate, by virtue of our righteous conduct (dharma), because we have become the very object of your arrival.
एवं प्रकथयन्तोऽत्र राजानोऽथ महर्षयः ।
आसनेषु सभास्थानमासाद्य समुपाविशन् ॥ ३० ॥
evaṃ prakathayanto'tra rājāno'tha maharṣayaḥ ,
āsaneṣu sabhāsthānamāsādya samupāviśan 30
30. evam prakathayantaḥ atra rājānaḥ atha maharṣayaḥ
āsaneṣu sabhāsthānam āsādya samupāviśan
30. While speaking thus, the kings and great sages present here, having arrived at the assembly place, then took their seats.
स दृष्ट्वा मालितं लक्ष्म्या भीतस्तमृषिसत्तमम् ।
प्रहृष्टवदनो राजा स्वयमर्घ्यं न्यवेदयत् ॥ ३१ ॥
sa dṛṣṭvā mālitaṃ lakṣmyā bhītastamṛṣisattamam ,
prahṛṣṭavadano rājā svayamarghyaṃ nyavedayat 31
31. sa dṛṣṭvā mālitam lakṣmyā bhītaḥ tam ṛṣisattamam
prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ rājā svayam arghyam nyavedayat
31. Having seen that best of sages, who was adorned with splendor (lakṣmī), the king was filled with awe. With a joyful face, he himself offered the water offering.
स राज्ञः प्रतिगृह्यार्घ्यं शास्त्रदृष्टेन कर्मणा ।
प्रदक्षिणं प्रकुर्वन्तं राजानं पर्यपूजयत् ॥ ३२ ॥
sa rājñaḥ pratigṛhyārghyaṃ śāstradṛṣṭena karmaṇā ,
pradakṣiṇaṃ prakurvantaṃ rājānaṃ paryapūjayat 32
32. sa rājñaḥ pratigṛhya arghyam śāstradṛṣṭena karmaṇā
pradakṣiṇam prakurvantam rājānam paryapūjayat
32. The sage, having accepted the water offering from the king according to the rite (karma) prescribed by the scriptures, honored the king who was performing the ritual circumambulation.
स राज्ञा पूजितस्तेन प्रहृष्टवदनस्तदा ।
कुशलं चाव्ययं चैव पर्यपृच्छन्नराधिपम् ॥ ३३ ॥
sa rājñā pūjitastena prahṛṣṭavadanastadā ,
kuśalaṃ cāvyayaṃ caiva paryapṛcchannarādhipam 33
33. sa rājñā pūjitaḥ tena prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ tadā
kuśalam ca avyayam ca eva paryapṛcchat narādhipam
33. Having been honored by that king, the sage, with a joyful face, then inquired of the ruler (narādhipam) about his well-being and prosperity.
वसिष्ठेन समागम्य प्रहस्य मुनिपुंगवः ।
यथार्हं चार्चयित्वैनं पप्रच्छानामयं ततः ॥ ३४ ॥
vasiṣṭhena samāgamya prahasya munipuṃgavaḥ ,
yathārhaṃ cārcayitvainaṃ papracchānāmayaṃ tataḥ 34
34. vasiṣṭhena samāgamya prahasya munipuṅgavaḥ
yathārham ca arcayitvā enam papraccha anāmayam tataḥ
34. Having met Vasiṣṭha, and having smiled, that foremost of sages (munipuṅgavaḥ) then appropriately honored him and inquired about his well-being.
क्षणं यथार्हमन्योन्यं पूजयित्वा समेत्य च ।
ते सर्वे हृष्टमनसो महाराजनिवेशने ॥ ३५ ॥
kṣaṇaṃ yathārhamanyonyaṃ pūjayitvā sametya ca ,
te sarve hṛṣṭamanaso mahārājaniveśane 35
35. kṣaṇaṃ yathārham anyonyam pūjayitvā sametya
ca te sarve hṛṣṭamanasaḥ mahārājaniveśane
35. After meeting and honoring each other appropriately for a moment, all of them, with cheerful minds, were in the royal palace.
यथोचितासनगता मिथः संवृद्धतेजसः ।
परस्परेण पप्रच्छुः सर्वेऽनामयमादरात् ॥ ३६ ॥
yathocitāsanagatā mithaḥ saṃvṛddhatejasaḥ ,
paraspareṇa papracchuḥ sarve'nāmayamādarāt 36
36. yathocitāsanagatā mithaḥ saṃvṛddhatejasaḥ
paraspareṇa papracchuḥ sarve anāmayam ādarāt
36. Having taken their appropriate seats, with their energy mutually enhanced, all of them respectfully inquired about each other's well-being.
उपविष्टाय तस्मै स विश्वामित्राय धीमते ।
पाद्यमर्घ्यं च गां चैव भूयोभूयो न्यवेदयत् ॥ ३७ ॥
upaviṣṭāya tasmai sa viśvāmitrāya dhīmate ,
pādyamarghyaṃ ca gāṃ caiva bhūyobhūyo nyavedayat 37
37. upaviṣṭāya tasmai sa viśvāmitrāya dhīmate pādyam
arghyam ca gām ca eva bhūyas bhūyas nyavedayat
37. He repeatedly offered water for the feet, an offering of respect, and a cow to that wise Viśvāmitra, who was seated.
अर्चयित्वा तु विधिवद्विश्वामित्रमभाषत ।
प्राञ्जलिः प्रयतो वाक्यमिदं प्रीतमना नृपः ॥ ३८ ॥
arcayitvā tu vidhivadviśvāmitramabhāṣata ,
prāñjaliḥ prayato vākyamidaṃ prītamanā nṛpaḥ 38
38. arcayitvā tu vidhivat viśvāmitram abhāṣata
prāñjaliḥ prayataḥ vākyam idam prītamanā nṛpaḥ
38. Indeed, after properly honoring Viśvāmitra, the king, with a pleased mind, spoke these words to him, with folded hands and in an attentive manner.
यथाऽमृतस्य संप्राप्तिर्यथा वर्षमवर्षके ।
यथान्धस्येक्षणप्राप्तिर्भवदागमनं तथा ॥ ३९ ॥
yathā'mṛtasya saṃprāptiryathā varṣamavarṣake ,
yathāndhasyekṣaṇaprāptirbhavadāgamanaṃ tathā 39
39. yathā amṛtasya samprāptiḥ yathā varṣam avarṣake
yathā andhasya īkṣaṇaprāptiḥ bhavadāgamanam tathā
39. Your arrival is like the attainment of nectar (amṛta), like rain falling upon a dry, rainless land, and like a blind person regaining their sight.
यथेष्टदारसंपर्कात्पुत्रजन्माऽप्रजावतः ।
स्वप्नदृष्टार्थलाभश्च भवदागमनं तथा ॥ ४० ॥
yatheṣṭadārasaṃparkātputrajanmā'prajāvataḥ ,
svapnadṛṣṭārthalābhaśca bhavadāgamanaṃ tathā 40
40. yatheṣṭadārasaṃparkāt putrajanma aprajāvataḥ
svapnadṛṣṭārthalābhaḥ ca bhavadāgamanam tathā
40. Your arrival is like a childless man conceiving a son with his desired wife, and like gaining a treasure seen in a dream.
यथेप्सितेन संयोग इष्टस्यागमनं यथा ।
प्रणष्टस्य यथा लाभो भवदागमनं तथा ॥ ४१ ॥
yathepsitena saṃyoga iṣṭasyāgamanaṃ yathā ,
praṇaṣṭasya yathā lābho bhavadāgamanaṃ tathā 41
41. yathepsitena saṃyogaḥ iṣṭasya āgamanam yathā
praṇaṣṭasya yathā lābhaḥ bhavadāgamanam tathā
41. Your arrival is like coming together with a longed-for person, like the arrival of a beloved one, and like finding something that was lost.
यथा हर्षो नभोगत्या मृतस्य पुनरागमात् ।
तथा त्वदागमाद्ब्रह्मन्स्वागतं ते महामुने ॥ ४२ ॥
yathā harṣo nabhogatyā mṛtasya punarāgamāt ,
tathā tvadāgamādbrahmansvāgataṃ te mahāmune 42
42. yathā harṣaḥ nabhogatyā mṛtasya punarāgamāt
tathā tvadāgamāt brahman svāgatam te mahāmune
42. O Brahman, O great sage, your arrival brings joy like that of the celestial beings when a dead person returns to life; therefore, welcome to you!
ब्रह्मलोकनिवासो हि कस्य न प्रीतिमावहेत् ।
मुने तवागमस्तद्वत्सत्यमेव ब्रवीमि ते ॥ ४३ ॥
brahmalokanivāso hi kasya na prītimāvahet ,
mune tavāgamastadvatsatyameva bravīmi te 43
43. brahma-loka-nivāsaḥ hi kasya na prītim āvahet
mune tava āgamaḥ tadvat satyam eva bravīmi te
43. Indeed, for whom would residence in the world of Brahmā (brahman) not bring joy? O sage, your arrival is just like that; I speak the truth to you.
कश्च ते परमः कामः किं च ते करवाण्यहम् ।
पात्रभूतोऽसि मे विप्र प्राप्तः परमधार्मिकः ॥ ४४ ॥
kaśca te paramaḥ kāmaḥ kiṃ ca te karavāṇyaham ,
pātrabhūto'si me vipra prāptaḥ paramadhārmikaḥ 44
44. kaḥ ca te paramaḥ kāmaḥ kim ca te karavāṇi aham
pātra-bhūtaḥ asi me vipra prāptaḥ parama-dhārmikaḥ
44. And what is your highest desire? And what can I do for you? O Brahmin, you have become a worthy recipient for me, having attained the highest righteousness (dharma).
पूर्वं राजर्षिशब्देन तपसा द्योतितप्रभः ।
ब्रह्मर्षित्वमनुप्राप्तः पूज्योऽसि भगवन्मया ॥ ४५ ॥
pūrvaṃ rājarṣiśabdena tapasā dyotitaprabhaḥ ,
brahmarṣitvamanuprāptaḥ pūjyo'si bhagavanmayā 45
45. pūrvam rājarṣi-śabdena tapasā dyotita-prabhaḥ
brahmarṣitvam anuprāptaḥ pūjyaḥ asi bhagavan mayā
45. Formerly, by the designation of "royal sage" (rājarṣi), your splendor was illuminated by asceticism (tapas). Having now attained the status of a Brahmin sage (brahmarṣi), O revered one, you are worthy of veneration by me.
गङ्गाजलाभिषेकेण यथा प्रीतिर्भवेन्मम ।
तथा त्वद्दर्शनात्प्रीतिरन्तः शीतयतीव माम् ॥ ४६ ॥
gaṅgājalābhiṣekeṇa yathā prītirbhavenmama ,
tathā tvaddarśanātprītirantaḥ śītayatīva mām 46
46. gaṅgā-jala-abhiṣekeṇa yathā prītiḥ bhavet mama
tathā tvat-darśanāt prītiḥ antaḥ śītayati iva mām
46. Just as joy comes to me from bathing in the waters of the Gaṅgā, so too, the joy from seeing you cools me within, as if.
विगतेच्छाभयक्रोधो वीतरागो निरामयः ।
इदमत्यद्भुतं ब्रह्मन्यद्भवान्मामुपागतः ॥ ४७ ॥
vigatecchābhayakrodho vītarāgo nirāmayaḥ ,
idamatyadbhutaṃ brahmanyadbhavānmāmupāgataḥ 47
47. vigatecchābhayakrodhaḥ vītarāgaḥ nirāmayaḥ idam
atyadbhutam brahman yat bhavān mām upāgataḥ
47. O Brahmin, it is exceedingly wonderful that you, who are devoid of desire, fear, and anger, free from attachment, and without any ailment, have come to me.
शुभक्षेत्रगतं चाहमात्मानमपकल्मषम् ।
चन्द्रबिम्ब इवोन्मग्नं वेदवेद्यविदांवर ॥ ४८ ॥
śubhakṣetragataṃ cāhamātmānamapakalmaṣam ,
candrabimba ivonmagnaṃ vedavedyavidāṃvara 48
48. śubhakṣetragatam ca aham ātmānam apakalmaṣam
candrabimbam iva unmagnam vedavedyavidāmvara
48. And I perceive my own self (ātman), having arrived in this auspicious place, to be spotless, having emerged like the orb of the moon, O best among those who understand the knowable through the Vedas.
साक्षादिव ब्रह्मणो मे तवाभ्यागमनं मतम् ।
पूतोऽस्म्यनुगृहीतश्च तवाभ्यागमनान्मुने ॥ ४९ ॥
sākṣādiva brahmaṇo me tavābhyāgamanaṃ matam ,
pūto'smyanugṛhītaśca tavābhyāgamanānmune 49
49. sākṣāt iva brahmaṇaḥ me tava abhyāgamanam matam
pūtaḥ asmi anugṛhītaḥ ca tava abhyāgamanāt mune
49. Your arrival to me is considered to be as if directly from the supreme reality (brahman). O sage, I am purified and blessed by your arrival.
त्वदागमनपुण्येन साधो यदनुरञ्जितम् ।
अद्य मे सफलं जन्म जीवितं तत्सुजीवितम् ॥ ५० ॥
tvadāgamanapuṇyena sādho yadanurañjitam ,
adya me saphalaṃ janma jīvitaṃ tatsujīvitam 50
50. tvadāgamanapuṇyena sādho yat anurañjitam
adya me saphalam janma jīvitam tat sujīvitam
50. O virtuous one, today, by the merit of your arrival, my birth, which has been gladdened, is fruitful, and that is truly a life well-lived.
त्वामिहाभ्यागतं दृष्ट्वा प्रतिपूज्य प्रणम्य च ।
आत्मन्येव नमाम्यन्तर्दृष्ट्वेन्दुं जलधिर्यथा ॥ ५१ ॥
tvāmihābhyāgataṃ dṛṣṭvā pratipūjya praṇamya ca ,
ātmanyeva namāmyantardṛṣṭvenduṃ jaladhiryathā 51
51. tvām iha abhyāgatam dṛṣṭvā pratipūjya praṇamya ca
ātmani eva namāmi antar dṛṣṭvā indum jaladhiḥ yathā
51. Having seen you arrived here, and having honored and bowed to you, I prostrate within my very self (ātman), just as the ocean does internally upon seeing the moon.
यत्कार्यं येन वार्थेन प्राप्तोऽसि मुनिपुङ्गव ।
कृतमित्येव तद्विद्धि मान्योऽसीति सदा मम ॥ ५२ ॥
yatkāryaṃ yena vārthena prāpto'si munipuṅgava ,
kṛtamityeva tadviddhi mānyo'sīti sadā mama 52
52. yat kāryam yena vā arthena prāptaḥ asi munipuṅgava
kṛtam iti eva tat viddhi mānyaḥ asi iti sadā mama
52. O best of sages, know that whatever task (kārya) or purpose (artha) you have come for is already accomplished, because you are always respected (mānya) by me.
स्वकार्ये न विमर्शं त्वं कर्तुमर्हसि कौशिक ।
भगवन्नास्त्यदेयं मे त्वयि यत्प्रतिपद्यते ॥ ५३ ॥
svakārye na vimarśaṃ tvaṃ kartumarhasi kauśika ,
bhagavannāstyadeyaṃ me tvayi yatpratipadyate 53
53. svakārye na vimarśam tvam kartum arhasi kauśika
bhagavan na asti adeyam me tvayi yat pratipadyate
53. O Kaushika, you should not deliberate on your own task (svakārya). O venerable one (bhagavan), there is nothing that I would consider not worth giving to you, whatever you may wish for.
कार्यस्य न विचारं त्वं कर्तुमर्हसि धर्मतः ।
कर्ता चाहमशेषं ते दैवतं परमं भवान् ॥ ५४ ॥
kāryasya na vicāraṃ tvaṃ kartumarhasi dharmataḥ ,
kartā cāhamaśeṣaṃ te daivataṃ paramaṃ bhavān 54
54. kāryasya na vicāram tvam kartum arhasi dharmataḥ
kartā ca aham aśeṣam te daivatam paramam bhavān
54. You should not deliberate on this task (kārya) in terms of its righteousness (dharma). Indeed, I am the one who will accomplish it completely (aśeṣam) for you, as you are my supreme deity.
इदमतिमधुरं निशम्य वाक्यं श्रुतिसुखमात्मविदा विनीतमुक्तम् ।
प्रथितगुणयशागुणैर्विशिष्टं मुनिवृषभः परमं जगाम हर्षम् ॥ ५५ ॥
idamatimadhuraṃ niśamya vākyaṃ śrutisukhamātmavidā vinītamuktam ,
prathitaguṇayaśāguṇairviśiṣṭaṃ munivṛṣabhaḥ paramaṃ jagāma harṣam 55
55. idam ati-madhuram niśamya vākyam
śruti-sukham ātma-vidā vinītam uktam
prathita-guṇa-yaśā-guṇaiḥ viśiṣṭam
muni-vṛṣabhaḥ paramam jagāma harṣam
55. Hearing this exceedingly sweet speech, which was pleasant to the ear, spoken humbly by one who knows the Self (ātman), and was distinguished by celebrated virtues and fame, the foremost of sages felt supreme joy.
