सहचरा ऊचुः ।
कथयत्येष पथिकः पश्य मन्दरगुल्मके ।
प्रियायाश्चिरलब्धाया वृत्तां विरहसंकथाम् ॥ १ ॥

1. His companions said: 'Look! This traveler, sitting on a Mandara shrub, is narrating the story of his separation from his long-cherished beloved.'
एकत्र श्रृणु किंवृत्तमाश्चर्यमिदमुत्तमम् ।
दातुं त्वन्निकटे दूतमहं चिन्तान्वितोऽवदम् ॥ २ ॥
ekatra śrṛṇu kiṃvṛttamāścaryamidamuttamam ,
dātuṃ tvannikaṭe dūtamahaṃ cintānvito'vadam 2
2. ekatra śṛṇu kiṃvṛttam āścaryam idam uttamam
dātum tvannikaṭe dūtam aham cintānvitaḥ avadam
2. ekatra śṛṇu idam uttamam āścaryam kiṃvṛttam
aham cintānvitaḥ tvannikaṭe dūtam dātum avadam
2. Listen attentively to this excellent and astonishing event. Filled with worry, I said (to myself), 'I need to send a messenger to you.'
अस्मिन्महाप्रलयकालसमे वियोगे यो मां तयेह मम याति गृहं स कः स्यात् ।
नैवास्त्यसौ जगति यः परदुःखशान्त्यै प्रीत्या निरन्तरतरं सरलं यतेत ॥ ३ ॥
asminmahāpralayakālasame viyoge yo māṃ tayeha mama yāti gṛhaṃ sa kaḥ syāt ,
naivāstyasau jagati yaḥ paraduḥkhaśāntyai prītyā nirantarataraṃ saralaṃ yateta 3
3. asmin mahāpralayakālasame viyoge yaḥ mām
tayā iha mama yāti gṛham saḥ kaḥ syāt na
eva asti asau jagati yaḥ paraduḥkhaśāntyai
prītyā nirantarataram saralam yateta
3. asmin mahāpralayakālasame viyoge yaḥ tayā mām mama iha gṛham yāti,
saḥ kaḥ syāt? na eva asti asau jagati yaḥ paraduḥkhaśāntyai prītyā nirantarataram saralam yateta
3. In this separation, which resembles the time of a great cosmic dissolution, who would be the one to come to my house, here to me, along with her? Truly, there is no one in the world who would strive so continuously and sincerely, with love, for the alleviation of another's sorrow.
आ एष शिखरे मेघः स्मराश्व इव संयुतः ।
विद्युल्लताविलासिन्या वलितो रसिकः स्थितः ॥ ४ ॥
ā eṣa śikhare meghaḥ smarāśva iva saṃyutaḥ ,
vidyullatāvilāsinyā valito rasikaḥ sthitaḥ 4
4. ā eṣaḥ śikhare meghaḥ smarāśvaḥ iva saṃyutaḥ |

4. ā eṣaḥ meghaḥ śikhare smarāśvaḥ iva saṃyutaḥ
vidyullatāvilāsinyā valitaḥ rasikaḥ sthitaḥ
4. Ah, this cloud on the mountain peak stands united as if with the horse of the god of love (smara), embraced by the charming lightning creeper, like a connoisseur enjoying himself.
भ्रातर्मेघ महेन्द्रचापमुचितं व्यालम्ब्य कण्ठेगुणं नीचैर्गर्ज मुहूर्तकं कुरु दयां सा बाष्पपूर्णेक्षणा ।
बाला बालमृणालकोमलतनुस्तन्वी न सोढुं क्षमा तां गत्वा सुगते गलज्जललवैराश्वासयात्मानिलैः ॥ ५ ॥
bhrātarmegha mahendracāpamucitaṃ vyālambya kaṇṭheguṇaṃ nīcairgarja muhūrtakaṃ kuru dayāṃ sā bāṣpapūrṇekṣaṇā ,
bālā bālamṛṇālakomalatanustanvī na soḍhuṃ kṣamā tāṃ gatvā sugate galajjalalavairāśvāsayātmānilaiḥ 5
5. bhrātar megha mahendracāpam ucitam vyālambya kaṇṭheguṇam
nīcaiḥ garja muhūrtakam kuru dayām sā bāṣpapūrṇekṣaṇā
| bālā bālamṛṇālakomaltanuḥ tanvī na soḍhum kṣamā
tām gatvā sugate galajjalalavaiḥ āśvāsaya ātmanilaiḥ ||
5. bhrātar megha mahendracāpam ucitam kaṇṭheguṇam vyālambya
nīcaiḥ muhūrtakam garja dayām kuru sā bālā
bālamṛṇālakomaltanuḥ tanvī bāṣpapūrṇekṣaṇā na soḍhum kṣamā he
sugate tāṃ gatvā galajjalalavaiḥ ātmanilaiḥ ca āśvāsaya
5. O brother cloud, adorn your neck with the fitting rainbow (Mahendracāpa) as a garland, and roar softly for a moment. Please show mercy! That young, slender girl, whose tender body is delicate like a young lotus stalk, has eyes full of tears and is unable to endure this suffering. O good friend, go to her and console her with trickling drops of water and gentle breezes.
चित्ततूलिकया व्योम्नि लिखित्वालिङ्गिता सती ।
न जाने क्वाधुनैवेतः पयोद दयिता गता ॥ ६ ॥
cittatūlikayā vyomni likhitvāliṅgitā satī ,
na jāne kvādhunaivetaḥ payoda dayitā gatā 6
6. cittatūlikayā vyomni likhitvā āliṅgitā satī | na
jāne kva adhunā eva itaḥ payoda dayitā gatā ||
6. payoda cittatūlikayā vyomni likhitvā āliṅgitā satī
(api) adhunā eva itaḥ kva gatā iti na jāne dayitā
6. Having drawn (her image) in the sky with the brush of my mind, and then having embraced her, O cloud, I do not know where my beloved has gone from here just now.
इत्थं चिन्तापरवशमतेस्तन्वि सार्धं त्वयाऽसावन्तर्लीनप्रसरमनसः क्वापि याता स्मृतिर्मे ।
संपन्नोऽहं परवशवपुः काष्ठकुड्योपमाङ्गो भङ्गं सोढुं क इव विरहक्लेशजं नाम शक्तः ॥ ७ ॥
itthaṃ cintāparavaśamatestanvi sārdhaṃ tvayā'sāvantarlīnaprasaramanasaḥ kvāpi yātā smṛtirme ,
saṃpanno'haṃ paravaśavapuḥ kāṣṭhakuḍyopamāṅgo bhaṅgaṃ soḍhuṃ ka iva virahakleśajaṃ nāma śaktaḥ 7
7. ittham cintāparavaśamates tanvi sārdham tvayā asau
antarlīnaprasaramanasaḥ kva api yātā smṛtiḥ me |
sampannaḥ aham paravaśavapuḥ kāṣṭhakuḍyopamāṅgaḥ
bhaṅgam soḍhum kaḥ iva virahakleśajam nāma śaktaḥ ||
7. tanvi ittham cintāparavaśamates antarlīnaprasaramanasaḥ
me asau tvayā sārdham smṛtiḥ kva api yātā
aham paravaśavapuḥ kāṣṭhakuḍyopamāṅgaḥ sampannaḥ
virahakleśajam bhaṅgam soḍhum kaḥ iva nāma śaktaḥ
7. O slender one, my memory, that memory of you, has vanished somewhere, as my mind is overcome by anxiety and its faculties are entirely absorbed within. I have become helpless, my body's limbs resembling a wooden wall. For who, indeed, is capable of enduring the anguish born from the suffering of separation?
पश्चाज्जातः कलकलरवः संतते पान्थसार्थे दीनालापैर्व्यसनविधुरैरालेपन्ते च मेघम् ।
कष्टं पान्थो मृत इति महारम्भसंपन्नहाहाशब्दः प्रोद्यत्पथिकवनिताविस्तृतोरःप्रहारः ॥ ८ ॥
paścājjātaḥ kalakalaravaḥ saṃtate pānthasārthe dīnālāpairvyasanavidhurairālepante ca megham ,
kaṣṭaṃ pāntho mṛta iti mahārambhasaṃpannahāhāśabdaḥ prodyatpathikavanitāvistṛtoraḥprahāraḥ 8
8. paścāt jātaḥ kalakalaravaḥ saṃtate pānthasārthe
dīnālāpaiḥ vyasanavidhuraiḥ ālepante ca megham |
kaṣṭam pānthaḥ mṛtaḥ iti mahārambhasaṃpannahahāśabdaḥ
prodyatpathikavanitāvistṛtorahaprahāraḥ ||
8. paścāt santate pānthasārthe kalakalaravaḥ jātaḥ
vyasanavidhuraiḥ dīnālāpaiḥ ca megham ālepante
kaṣṭam pānthaḥ mṛtaḥ iti prodyatpathikavanitāvistṛtorahaprahāraḥ
mahārambhasaṃpannahahāśabdaḥ
8. Subsequently, a confused clamor arose among the gathered company of travelers. With sorrowful laments, distressed by their misfortune, they cried out to the cloud. "Alas, the traveler is dead!" - a great outburst of cries of lamentation (hāhā-śabda) began, accompanied by the wives of the travelers, rising up and beating their expansive chests.
लोकेनायं मृत इति ततो बाष्पसंपूरिताक्षं शावीं पूजां विरचितवता संचयीकृत्य दारु ।
दग्धुं नीतोऽस्म्यतिभयमहं प्रज्वलच्चित्यनन्तप्रोद्यत्स्फोटस्फुटपटपटारावरौद्रं श्मशानम् ॥ ९ ॥
lokenāyaṃ mṛta iti tato bāṣpasaṃpūritākṣaṃ śāvīṃ pūjāṃ viracitavatā saṃcayīkṛtya dāru ,
dagdhuṃ nīto'smyatibhayamahaṃ prajvalaccityanantaprodyatsphoṭasphuṭapaṭapaṭārāvaraudraṃ śmaśānam 9
9. lokena ayam mṛtaḥ iti tataḥ bāṣpasaṃpūritākṣam śāvīm
pūjām viracitavatā saṃcayīkṛtya dāru | dagdhum
nītaḥ asmi atibhayam aham prajvalat citi ananta
prodyat sphoṭa sphuṭa paṭapaṭārava raudram śmaśānam ||
9. lokena ayam mṛtaḥ iti,
tataḥ bāṣpasaṃpūritākṣam śāvīm pūjām viracitavatā,
dāru saṃcayīkṛtya,
atibhayam aham dagdhum prajvalat citi ananta prodyat sphoṭa sphuṭa paṭapaṭārava raudram śmaśānam nītaḥ asmi
9. "This one is dead," the people declared, their eyes filled with tears as they performed the funeral rites (śāvī pūjā) and gathered wood. Then, I was led, overcome with great fear, to the terrifying cremation ground (śmaśāna), which was dreadful with the endless, rising, bursting, and distinct "paṭa-paṭa" sounds of the blazing pyre.
तत्राहं तैः कमलवदने बाष्पपूर्णाक्षिपक्षैर्न्यस्तः कैश्चिच्चितिशयनके बद्धलोकालिलेखे ।
धूमोद्गाराविरलजटिले मस्तके मत्तमृत्योश्चूडारत्नोत्तम इव कलामात्रदृश्येऽग्निहेम्नि ॥ १० ॥
tatrāhaṃ taiḥ kamalavadane bāṣpapūrṇākṣipakṣairnyastaḥ kaiściccitiśayanake baddhalokālilekhe ,
dhūmodgārāviralajaṭile mastake mattamṛtyoścūḍāratnottama iva kalāmātradṛśye'gnihemni 10
10. tatra aham taiḥ kamalavadane bāṣpapūrṇākṣipakṣaiḥ
nyastaḥ kaiścit citiśayanake baddhalokālilekhe
| dhūmodgārāvirala jaṭile mastake mattamṛtyoḥ
cūḍāratnottamaḥ iva kalāmātradṛśye agnihemni ||
10. tatra,
kamalavadane,
aham taiḥ bāṣpapūrṇākṣipakṣaiḥ kaiścit baddhalokālilekhe citiśayanake nyastaḥ (tat) dhūmodgārāvirala jaṭile mattamṛtyoḥ mastake cūḍāratnottamaḥ iva (asti) agnihemni kalāmātradṛśye (ca)
10. There, O lotus-faced one (kamalavadane), I was placed by some people, whose eye-corners were full of tears, onto the pyre-bed (citiśayanaka), which was surrounded by a multitude of observers. It was (like) the supreme crest-jewel on the head of intoxicated Death (mṛtyu), dense with continuous smoke emissions, barely visible like a mere speck of gold in the fire.
अस्मिन्काले कुवलयलताकोमला धूमलेखा नासारन्ध्रं मृदुगलबिलं मे प्रवृत्ता नियातुम् ।
उष्णा कृष्णा नकुलकलिता सत्वरं बालसर्पी भूमे रन्ध्रं तनुमिव दराद्दैर्घ्यसंकोचकुब्जा ॥ ११ ॥
asminkāle kuvalayalatākomalā dhūmalekhā nāsārandhraṃ mṛdugalabilaṃ me pravṛttā niyātum ,
uṣṇā kṛṣṇā nakulakalitā satvaraṃ bālasarpī bhūme randhraṃ tanumiva darāddairghyasaṃkocakubjā 11
11. asmin kāle kuvalayalatakomalā dhūmalekhā nāsārandhram
mṛdu galabilam me pravṛttā niyātum | uṣṇā
kṛṣṇā nakulakalitā satvaram bālasarpī bhūmeḥ
randhram tanum iva darāt dairghyasaṃkocakubjā ||
11. asmin kāle kuvalayalatākomalā dhūmalekhā me nāsārandhram mṛdu galabilam niyātum pravṛttā uṣṇā kṛṣṇā nakulakalitā bālasarpī darāt dairghyasaṃkocakubjā,
tanum randhram iva bhūmeḥ satvaram (pravṛttā)
11. At that moment, a plume of smoke (dhūmalekhā), soft and delicate like a blue lotus creeper, began to enter my nostril and my soft throat passage. It was like a hot, dark, coiling baby snake, swiftly entering a narrow hole in the earth, hunched and contracting its length out of fear.
त्वत्संकल्पामृतकवचितो नापविद्धस्तयाहं कुन्तश्रेण्या दृढपतनया वज्रकायो यथाजः ।
त्वामासन्नां मदनसरितं हृद्गृहे गाहमानो मर्मच्छेदेष्वपि विलसिता नाविदं वेदनास्ताः ॥ १२ ॥
tvatsaṃkalpāmṛtakavacito nāpaviddhastayāhaṃ kuntaśreṇyā dṛḍhapatanayā vajrakāyo yathājaḥ ,
tvāmāsannāṃ madanasaritaṃ hṛdgṛhe gāhamāno marmacchedeṣvapi vilasitā nāvidaṃ vedanāstāḥ 12
12. tvat-saṅkalpa-amṛta-kavacitaḥ na apaviddhaḥ tayā
aham kunta-śreṇyā dṛḍha-patanayā vajra-kāyaḥ yathā
ajaḥ tvām āsannām madana-saritam hṛd-gṛhe gāhamānaḥ
marma-cchedeṣu api vilasitāḥ na avidam vedanāḥ tāḥ
12. aham tvat-saṅkalpa-amṛta-kavacitaḥ dṛḍha-patanayā
kunta-śreṇyā na apaviddhaḥ yathā ajaḥ vajra-kāyaḥ
hṛd-gṛhe tvām āsannām madana-saritam gāhamānaḥ
marma-cchedeṣu api vilasitāḥ tāḥ vedanāḥ na avidam
12. Protected by the nectar of your resolve, I was not struck by the forceful shower of spears, just like Aja, whose body is like a thunderbolt. Immersing myself in you, a nearby river of love, within the sanctuary of my heart, I did not experience those pains, even when vital points were severely wounded.
एतावन्तं समयमुचितं तन्वि सार्धं त्वयान्तर्लीलालोलं हृदि चिरतरं तन्मयात्रानुभूतम् ।
यस्मिन्दृष्टेऽमृतह्रद इवोन्मज्जनौघैर्यथासौ राज्याभोगो विशसनमिवाल्पाल्पमेवेति बुद्धिः ॥ १३ ॥
etāvantaṃ samayamucitaṃ tanvi sārdhaṃ tvayāntarlīlālolaṃ hṛdi cirataraṃ tanmayātrānubhūtam ,
yasmindṛṣṭe'mṛtahrada ivonmajjanaughairyathāsau rājyābhogo viśasanamivālpālpameveti buddhiḥ 13
13. etāvantam samayam ucitam tanvi sārdham tvayā antaḥ-līlā-lolam
hṛdi cirataram tat mayā atra anubhūtam yasmin
dṛṣṭe amṛta-hradaḥ iva unmajjana-oghaiḥ yathā asau
rājya-ābhogaḥ viśasanam iva alpa-alpam eva iti buddhiḥ
13. tanvi mayā atra tvayā sārdham hṛdi antaḥ-līlā-lolam
etāvantam ucitam cirataram samayam tat anubhūtam yasmin
dṛṣṭe amṛta-hradaḥ iva unmajjana-oghaiḥ yathā asau
buddhiḥ rājya-ābhogaḥ viśasanam iva alpa-alpam eva iti
13. Oh slender one, that appropriate time, playful and restless within my heart, was experienced by me here for a very long duration with you. Upon seeing that (experience), the realization emerges - as if from a lake of nectar with surging waves of joy - that even the enjoyment of a kingdom (rājyābhoga) is like a mere slaughter, utterly insignificant.
सा लीला ते विलासा वचनमपि च तत्सस्मितं ते कटाक्षाः सानन्दानन्तरस्य प्रसरसमुचिता दूरमण्येकभूषा ।
तानीहारावसारावहसनचलनावेगविक्षोभितानि ॥ १४ ॥ sā līlā te vilāsā vacanamapi ca tatsasmitaṃ te kaṭākṣāḥ sānandānantarasya prasarasamucitā dūramaṇyekabhūṣā ।
tānīhārāvasārāvahasanacalanāvegavikṣobhitāni ।

14 ।
सा लीला ते विलासा वचनमपि च तत्सस्मितं ते कटाक्षाः सानन्दानन्तरस्य प्रसरसमुचिता दूरमण्येकभूषा ।
तानीहारावसारावहसनचलनावेगविक्षोभितानि ॥ १४ ॥
14. sā līlā te vilāsā vacanam api ca tat sasmitam
te kaṭākṣāḥ sa-ānanda-anantarasya
prasara-samucitāḥ dūram api eka-bhūṣā tāni
īhāra-avasāra-avahasana-calana-āvega-vikṣobhitāni
14. te sā līlā te vilāsā ca te tat sasmitam vacanam
api ca te kaṭākṣāḥ sānanda-anantarasya
prasara-samucitāḥ api dūram eka-bhūṣāḥ tāni
īhāra-avasāra-avahasana-calana-āvega-vikṣobhitāni
14. That playfulness, your charms, and also your smiling speech; your glances, which are fitting for the unfolding of ensuing joy and are a singular adornment even from afar - all these were agitated by the surges of cessation of effort, mocking laughter, and movements.
किंवा तत्तन्न यत्संस्मृतममृतरसाह्लादमंतः करोति ।
त्वत्संगमे सुरतसौख्यरसायनेन बाले ततोऽहमतितृप्ततया श्रमार्तः ।
तत्र स्थितो मृदुनि तल्पतले शशाङ्क बिम्बे शरच्छिशिरनिर्मलशोचिषीव ॥ १५ ॥
kiṃvā tattanna yatsaṃsmṛtamamṛtarasāhlādamaṃtaḥ karoti ,
tvatsaṃgame suratasaukhyarasāyanena bāle tato'hamatitṛptatayā śramārtaḥ ,
tatra sthito mṛduni talpatale śaśāṅka bimbe śaracchiśiranirmalaśociṣīva 15
15. kim vā tat tat na yat saṃsmṛtam amṛta-rasa-āhlādam antaḥ
karoti tvat-saṅgame surata-saukhya-rasāyanena bāle
tataḥ aham ati-tṛptatayā śrama-ārtaḥ tatra sthitaḥ mṛduni
talpa-tale śaśāṅka bimbe śarat-śiśira-nirmala-śociṣi iva
15. kim vā tat tat na yat saṃsmṛtam antaḥ amṛta-rasa-āhlādam
na karoti bāle tvat-saṅgame surata-saukhya-rasāyanena
tataḥ aham ati-tṛptatayā śrama-ārtaḥ tatra mṛduni talpa-tale
śaśāṅka bimbe śarat-śiśira-nirmala-śociṣi iva sthitaḥ
15. What is there, when remembered, that does not fill the heart with a nectar-like delight? Oh young girl, through the elixir of sexual pleasure (surata) in union with you, I became exhausted from excessive contentment. I lay there on a soft bed, as if on the autumn-cool, pure and radiant disc of the moon.
अत्रान्तरे झटिति चन्दनपङ्कशीताद्दीर्घादिवेन्दुशकलादशनिः सशब्दः ।
दृष्टो मया चितितलज्वलितो हुताशः क्षीराब्धिवाडवनिभोङ्गगतः स्वतल्पात् ॥ १६ ॥
atrāntare jhaṭiti candanapaṅkaśītāddīrghādivenduśakalādaśaniḥ saśabdaḥ ,
dṛṣṭo mayā cititalajvalito hutāśaḥ kṣīrābdhivāḍavanibhoṅgagataḥ svatalpāt 16
16. atra antare jhaṭiti candanapaṅkaśītāt
dīrghāt iva induśakalāt aśaniḥ saśabdaḥ
dṛṣṭaḥ mayā cititalajvalitaḥ hutāśaḥ
kṣīrābdhivāḍavanibhaḥ aṅgagataḥ svatalpāt
16. mayā atra antare jhaṭiti candanapaṅkaśītāt dīrghāt iva induśakalāt saśabdaḥ aśaniḥ,
cititalajvalitaḥ kṣīrābdhivāḍavanibhaḥ hutāśaḥ,
svatalpāt aṅgagataḥ dṛṣṭaḥ
16. At that moment, suddenly, I saw a loud thunderbolt, which seemed to originate from a long, moon-like sliver, cool with sandalwood paste. This fire, burning on the ground and resembling the submarine fire (vāḍavāgni) of the milk ocean, landed on my body from my own couch.
सहचरा ऊचुः ।
इत्युक्तवति कान्तेऽस्मिन् हा हतास्मीति वादिनी ।
मुग्धा मौग्ध्याद्वरावर्तशङ्कया मूर्च्छिता स्थिता ॥ १७ ॥
sahacarā ūcuḥ ,
ityuktavati kānte'smin hā hatāsmīti vādinī ,
mugdhā maugdhyādvarāvartaśaṅkayā mūrcchitā sthitā 17
17. iti uktavati kānte asmin hā hatā asmi iti vādinī
mugdhā maugdhyāt vara āvarta śaṅkayā mūrcchitā sthitā
17. asmin kānte iti uktavati,
hā hatā asmi iti vādinī mugdhā maugdhyāt vara āvarta śaṅkayā mūrcchitā sthitā
17. When her beloved man (kānta) had thus spoken, she, the bewildered one, exclaiming 'Alas, I am ruined!', fainted and remained unconscious due to her bewilderment and the fear of an excellent whirlpool.
तामेनामेष नलिनीदलवीजेन वारिभिः ।
आश्वासयंस्तथावस्थां कण्ठेकृत्वात्र संस्थितः ॥ १८ ॥
tāmenāmeṣa nalinīdalavījena vāribhiḥ ,
āśvāsayaṃstathāvasthāṃ kaṇṭhekṛtvātra saṃsthitaḥ 18
18. tām enām eṣa nalinīdala vījena vāribhiḥ āśvāsayan

18. He remained there, comforting her in that state with a fan made of lotus leaves and with water, and embracing her.
पुनः पृष्टोऽनया वक्ति पश्य तामेव संकथाम् ।
एष पार्श्वगतामेनां गृहीत्वा चिबुके प्रियाम् ॥ १९ ॥
punaḥ pṛṣṭo'nayā vakti paśya tāmeva saṃkathām ,
eṣa pārśvagatāmenāṃ gṛhītvā cibuke priyām 19

19. When again questioned by her, he says, 'Listen to that very same story!' (And) he, holding his beloved, who was by his side, by the chin...
हा हा हुताश इति किंचिदिवोपजातखेदो वदामि खलु यावदहं त्वरावान् ।
तावच्चितिर्झटिति तैरवलुण्ठिता सा पान्थैः क्षणात्खरखराकुलिता लसद्भिः ॥ २० ॥

citiḥ jhaṭiti taiḥ avalunṭhitā sā

20. yāvat aham tvarāvān kiñcit iva upajātakhdaḥ
hutāśa iti hā hā khalu vadāmi tāvat
taiḥ lasadbhiḥ pānthaiḥ sā citiḥ jhaṭiti
avalunṭhitā kṣaṇāt kharakharā ākulitā
20. “Alas, alas, O Fire!” - while I, somewhat saddened, was speaking these words in haste, that very moment, that pyre was instantly overturned by those agile travelers, and in an instant, it became agitated with crackling sounds.
पान्थास्ततस्तरलतालविलासवाद्यमालिङ्ग्य मामतनुशेखरपूरिताङ्गम् ।
उत्थापितस्थितिमलं परिवार्य सर्वे नेदुर्जगुर्जहसुराननृतुर्ववल्गुः ॥ २१ ॥

utthāpitasthitimalaṃ parivārya sarve nedurjagurjahasurānanṛturvavalguḥ 21

neduḥ jaguḥ jahasuḥ ānanṛtuḥ vavalguḥ

taralatālavilāsavādyam āliṅgya
utthāpitasthitim alam parivārya sarve
neduḥ jaguḥ jahasuḥ ānanṛtuḥ vavalguḥ
21. Then, having embraced me - whose body was adorned with a massive headdress and who served as a lively, rhythmic instrument - all the travelers, having firmly set me in position and surrounded me, roared, sang, laughed, danced, and leaped.
विषमविनायकसुखदं वलितं भस्माहिशवशिरःप्रकरैः ।
शशिधवलास्थिकपालं वपुरिव रौद्रं श्मशानमथ दृष्टम् ॥ २२ ॥

22. Then a fierce cremation ground (śmaśāna) was seen, which was like a terrible body (vapu) of Rudra, providing pleasure to formidable vināyakas (malevolent spirits), covered in ashes and masses of snake-corpse heads, and possessing skulls and bones white like the moon.
पार्श्वच्छायां हरन्तो विचलितविदलत्क्लिन्नकङ्कालगन्धास्तन्वन्तो भूरिभस्मप्रविततमिहिकामाधुनानाः शवानाम् ।
केशानाकाशकोशे शशिगलितशराकारिणः शांकराणामस्थीनां टांकृतेनारचितखरगिरस्तत्र वाता वहन्ति ॥ २३ ॥
pārśvacchāyāṃ haranto vicalitavidalatklinnakaṅkālagandhāstanvanto bhūribhasmapravitatamihikāmādhunānāḥ śavānām ,
keśānākāśakośe śaśigalitaśarākāriṇaḥ śāṃkarāṇāmasthīnāṃ ṭāṃkṛtenāracitakharagirastatra vātā vahanti 23

23. tatra vātāḥ pārśvacchāyām harantaḥ
vicalitavidalatklinnakaṅkālagandhāḥ bhūribhasmapravitatamihikām ādhunānāḥ
śavānām keśān ākāśakośe śaśigalitaśarākāriṇaḥ
śāṅkarāṇām asthīnām ṭāṅkṛtena aracitakharagiraḥ vahanti
23. There, the winds (vāta) blow, carrying away peripheral shadows, and permeated with the scent of agitated, bursting, moist skeletons. They spread a dense mist (mihikā) infused with abundant ash, shaking the hairs of corpses in the expanse of the sky. These winds, appearing like arrows fallen from the moon, also create harsh sounds through the tinkling of the bones of Śaṅkara's devotees.
ज्वलदनलचितिप्रवाहनिर्यत्पवनहतोष्मविशुष्कपर्णवृक्षा ।
ज्वलनपवनभास्करात्मजानां रमणगृहानुकृतिं बिभर्ति सा भूः ॥ २४ ॥

24. That land, where the trees have leaves utterly parched by the intense heat stirred by winds emerging from the continuous flow of blazing funeral pyres, takes on the appearance of a pleasure abode for Fire, Wind, and Yama (the son of Bhāskara).
दृष्टं श्मशानं तदनन्तभीमकरङ्ककंकालघनामगन्धि ।
माद्यच्छिवावायसकङ्कगृध्रपिशाचवेतालविरावरौद्रम् ॥ २५ ॥
dṛṣṭaṃ śmaśānaṃ tadanantabhīmakaraṅkakaṃkālaghanāmagandhi ,

25. That cremation ground (śmaśānam) was seen, dense with innumerable terrible skulls and skeletons, putrid-smelling, and frightful with the cacophony of shrieks from maddened jackals, crows, kites, vultures, goblins, and vampires.
आनीतनानाशवबन्धुसार्थसंरोदनाह्रादिदिगन्तकुञ्जम् ।
खगावकृष्टार्द्रशिरान्त्रतन्त्रीनिबद्धदग्धद्रुमखण्डजालम् ॥ २६ ॥

26. The distant groves of that place (śmaśānam) resounded with the lamentations of the groups of relatives who had brought various corpses, and its multitude of burnt tree fragments was bound together by string-like moist heads and entrails, which had been dragged down by birds.
क्वचिच्चितिक्षोभकृतप्रकाशं क्वचिन्महाकेशकृताब्दवृन्दम् ।
क्वचिच्च रक्ताक्तधरावितानं नक्तं स्तनत्त्वभ्रमिवास्तशैलम् ॥ २७ ॥

kvacicca raktāktadharāvitānaṃ naktaṃ stanattvabhramivāstaśailam 27

27. Somewhere, there was light caused by the stirring of pyres; somewhere, masses of clouds were formed by the abundant hair (smoke from burning hair); and somewhere, an expanse of ground was stained with blood. At night, it appeared like a setting mountain, resembling a thundering cloud.
