इमं मे संशयं छिन्धि भगवन्भास्करं तमः ।
भुवनस्येव भावानां सम्यग्रूपानुभूतये ॥ १ ॥

imaṃ me saṃśayaṃ chindhi bhagavanbhāskaraṃ tamaḥ ,

1. Śrī Rāma said: O venerable one (Bhagavan), dispel this doubt of mine, just as the sun dispels darkness, so that I may realize the true nature of all phenomena, similar to how it illuminates the world.
कदाचिदहमेकाग्रो विद्यागेहे विपश्चिताम् ।
संसदि स्थितवान्यावत्तापसः कश्चिदागतः ॥ २ ॥
kadācidahamekāgro vidyāgehe vipaścitām ,
saṃsadi sthitavānyāvattāpasaḥ kaścidāgataḥ 2
2. kadācit aham ekāgraḥ vidyāgehe vipaścitām
saṃsadi sthitavān yāvat tāpasaḥ kaścit āgataḥ
2. kadācit aham ekāgraḥ vipaścitām vidyāgehe saṃsadi yāvat sthitavān,
kaścit tāpasaḥ āgataḥ
2. Once, while I was intently present in the assembly of scholars at the house of learning, a certain ascetic arrived.
विद्वान्द्विजवरः श्रीमान्विदेहजनमण्डलात् ।
महातपाः कान्तियुतो दुर्वासा इव दुःसहः ॥ ३ ॥
vidvāndvijavaraḥ śrīmānvidehajanamaṇḍalāt ,
mahātapāḥ kāntiyuto durvāsā iva duḥsahaḥ 3
3. vidvān dvijavaraḥ śrīmān videhajanamaṇḍalāt
mahātapāḥ kāntiyutaḥ durvāsā iva duḥsahaḥ
3. vidvān dvijavaraḥ śrīmān videhajanamaṇḍalāt
mahātapāḥ kāntiyutaḥ durvāsā iva duḥsahaḥ
3. He was a learned, glorious, excellent Brahmin, from the region of the Videha people, possessing great ascetic power (tapas), full of splendor, and formidable like Durvāsā, almost unbearable.
स प्रविश्याभिवाद्याशु सभामाभास्वरद्युतिम् ।
उपविश्यासने तिष्ठन्नस्माभिरभिवादितः ॥ ४ ॥
sa praviśyābhivādyāśu sabhāmābhāsvaradyutim ,
upaviśyāsane tiṣṭhannasmābhirabhivāditaḥ 4
4. saḥ praviśya abhivādya āśu sabhām ābhāsvaradyutim
upaviśya āsane tiṣṭhan asmābhiḥ abhivāditaḥ
4. saḥ āśu ābhāsvaradyutim sabhām praviśya abhivādya,
āsane upaviśya tiṣṭhan,
asmābhiḥ abhivāditaḥ
4. Having quickly entered and greeted the brilliantly shining assembly, he sat down on a seat. As he remained seated there, we greeted him.
वेदान्तसांख्यसिद्धान्तवादान्संहृत्य सत्तमम् ।
सुखोपविष्टं विश्रान्तं तमहं पृष्टवानिदम् ॥ ५ ॥
vedāntasāṃkhyasiddhāntavādānsaṃhṛtya sattamam ,
sukhopaviṣṭaṃ viśrāntaṃ tamahaṃ pṛṣṭavānidam 5
5. vedāntasāṃkhyasiddhāntavādān saṃhṛtya sattamam
sukhopaviṣṭam viśrāntam tam aham pṛṣṭavān idam
5. aham vedāntasāṃkhyasiddhāntavādān saṃhṛtya,
tam sattamam sukhopaviṣṭam viśrāntam,
idam pṛṣṭavān
5. After concluding the most excellent discussions on the doctrines of Vedānta and Sāṃkhya, I asked him, who was comfortably seated and rested, the following:
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
एवमेतन्महाभाग सुमहायत्नवानहम् ।
यदर्थमागतोऽस्मीह तस्याकर्णय निर्णयम् ॥ ७ ॥
brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
evametanmahābhāga sumahāyatnavānaham ,
yadarthamāgato'smīha tasyākarṇaya nirṇayam 7
7. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca evam etat mahābhāga sumahāyatnavān aham
yat artham āgataḥ asmi iha tasya ākarṇaya nirṇayam
7. mahābhāga evam etat aham sumahāyatnavān asmi
iha yat artham āgataḥ tasya nirṇayam ākarṇaya
7. The Brahmin said, "Indeed, O greatly fortunate one, I am making a great effort concerning this. Please listen to the decision regarding the purpose for which I have come here."
वैदेहो नाम देशोऽस्ति सर्वसौभाग्यसंयुतः ।
स्वर्गस्याम्बरसंस्थस्य प्रतिबिम्वमिवावनौ ॥ ८ ॥
vaideho nāma deśo'sti sarvasaubhāgyasaṃyutaḥ ,
svargasyāmbarasaṃsthasya pratibimvamivāvanau 8
8. vaidehaḥ nāma deśaḥ asti sarvasaubhāgyasaṃyutaḥ
svargasya ambarasaṃsthasya pratibimbam iva avanau
8. nāma vaidehaḥ deśaḥ asti sarvasaubhāgyasaṃyutaḥ
ambarasaṃsthasya svargasya pratibimbam iva avanau
8. There is a country named Vaideha, endowed with all prosperity. It is like a reflection on earth of heaven, which is situated in the sky.
तत्राहं ब्राह्मणो जातः प्राप्तविद्यश्च संस्थितः ।
कुन्दावदातदन्तत्वात्कुन्ददन्त इति श्रुतः ॥ ९ ॥
tatrāhaṃ brāhmaṇo jātaḥ prāptavidyaśca saṃsthitaḥ ,
kundāvadātadantatvātkundadanta iti śrutaḥ 9
9. tatra aham brāhmaṇaḥ jātaḥ prāptavidyaḥ ca saṃsthitaḥ
kundāvadātadantatvāt kundadantaḥ iti śrutaḥ
9. tatra aham brāhmaṇaḥ jātaḥ ca prāptavidyaḥ saṃsthitaḥ
kundāvadātadantatvāt iti kundadantaḥ śrutaḥ
9. There, I was born as a Brahmin and settled, having acquired knowledge. I became known as 'Kundadanta' due to my teeth being as white as jasmine flowers.
अथाहं जातवैराग्यः प्रविहर्तुं प्रवृत्तवान् ।
देवद्विजमुनीन्द्राणां संभ्रमाच्छ्रमशान्तये ॥ १० ॥
athāhaṃ jātavairāgyaḥ pravihartuṃ pravṛttavān ,
devadvijamunīndrāṇāṃ saṃbhramācchramaśāntaye 10
10. atha aham jātavairāgyaḥ pravihartum pravṛttavān
devadvijamunīndrāṇām saṃbhramāt śramaśāntaye
10. atha aham jātavairāgyaḥ devadvijamunīndrāṇām
saṃbhramāt śramaśāntaye pravihartum pravṛttavān
10. Then, having developed detachment (vairāgya), I set out to wander, motivated by reverence for the chief of gods, Brahmins, and sages, and for the alleviation of my own toil.
श्रीपर्वतमखण्डेहं कदाचित्प्राप्तवानहम् ।
तत्रावसं चिरं कालं मृदु दीर्घं तपश्चरन् ॥ ११ ॥
śrīparvatamakhaṇḍehaṃ kadācitprāptavānaham ,
tatrāvasaṃ ciraṃ kālaṃ mṛdu dīrghaṃ tapaścaran 11
11. śrīparvatam akhaṇḍaḥ aham kadācit prāptavān aham
tatra avasam ciram kālam mṛdu dīrgham tapaḥ caran
11. kadācit aham akhaṇḍaḥ śrīparvatam prāptavān.
tatra ciram kālam mṛdu dīrgham tapaḥ caran avasam.
11. Once, I, with an undivided mind, reached Śrīparvata. There, I resided for a long time, performing gentle and prolonged austerities (tapas).
तत्रास्त्यरण्यं विदितं मुक्तं तृणवनादिभिः ।
त्यक्ततेजस्तमोभ्रादिभूमाविव नभस्तलम् ॥ १२ ॥
tatrāstyaraṇyaṃ viditaṃ muktaṃ tṛṇavanādibhiḥ ,
tyaktatejastamobhrādibhūmāviva nabhastalam 12
12. tatra asti araṇyam viditam muktam tṛṇavana-ādibhiḥ
tyakta-tejas-tamas-abhra-ādi-bhūmau iva nabhastalam
12. tatra viditam araṇyam asti,
tṛṇavana-ādibhiḥ muktam,
tyakta-tejas-tamas-abhra-ādi-bhūmau iva nabhastalam.
12. There was a well-known forest, devoid of grasses, thickets, and similar growths. It was like the vast sky (nabhastalam) above a plane (bhūmāv) where radiance, darkness, and clouds, etc., had been relinquished.
तत्रास्ति मध्ये विटपी लघुः पेलवपल्लवः ।
स्थित एषोऽम्बरे शून्ये मन्दरश्मिरिवांशुमान् ॥ १३ ॥
tatrāsti madhye viṭapī laghuḥ pelavapallavaḥ ,
sthita eṣo'mbare śūnye mandaraśmirivāṃśumān 13
13. tatra asti madhye viṭapī laghuḥ pelava-pallavaḥ
sthitaḥ eṣaḥ ambare śūnye manda-raśmiḥ iva aṃśumān
13. tatra madhye laghuḥ pelava-pallavaḥ viṭapī asti.
eṣaḥ śūnye ambare manda-raśmiḥ aṃśumān iva sthitaḥ.
13. In the middle of that (forest), there was a small tree with tender shoots. This (tree) stood in the void of the sky, like the sun with faint rays.
लम्बते तस्य शाखायां पुरुषः पावनाकृतिः ।
भानुर्भानाविव रश्मिगृहीतो ग्रथिताकृतिः ॥ १४ ॥
lambate tasya śākhāyāṃ puruṣaḥ pāvanākṛtiḥ ,
bhānurbhānāviva raśmigṛhīto grathitākṛtiḥ 14
14. lambate tasya śākhāyām puruṣaḥ pāvana-ākṛtiḥ
bhānuḥ bhānau iva raśmi-gṛhītaḥ grathita-ākṛtiḥ
14. tasya śākhāyām pāvana-ākṛtiḥ puruṣaḥ lambate.
(saḥ) bhānuḥ bhānau iva raśmi-gṛhītaḥ grathita-ākṛtiḥ (asti).
14. From a branch of that (tree), a person (puruṣa) of purifying appearance was suspended. He was like the sun (bhānu) within the sun (bhānu) - intensely brilliant - with a compact form, held as if by rays.
मौञ्जदामनिबद्धोर्ध्वपादो नित्यमवाक्शिराः ।
अष्ठीलत्वं दधदिव महाष्ठीलस्य शाल्मलेः ॥ १५ ॥
mauñjadāmanibaddhordhvapādo nityamavākśirāḥ ,
aṣṭhīlatvaṃ dadhadiva mahāṣṭhīlasya śālmaleḥ 15
15. mauñjadāmanibaddhordhvapādaḥ nityam avākśirāḥ
aṣṭhīlatvam dadhat iva mahāṣṭhīlasya śālmaleḥ
15. mauñjadāmanibaddhordhvapādaḥ avākśirāḥ nityam
mahāṣṭhīlasya śālmaleḥ aṣṭhīlatvam dadhat iva
15. With his feet always bound upwards by a cord of munja grass and his head hanging downwards, he appeared as if embodying the immobility of a massive trunk of a silk-cotton tree.
दृष्टः प्राप्तेन तं देशं स कदाचिन्मया पुमान् ।
विचारितो निकटतो वक्षःस्थाञ्जलिसंपुटः ॥ १६ ॥
dṛṣṭaḥ prāptena taṃ deśaṃ sa kadācinmayā pumān ,
vicārito nikaṭato vakṣaḥsthāñjalisaṃpuṭaḥ 16
16. dṛṣṭaḥ prāptena tam deśam saḥ kadācit mayā pumān
vicāritaḥ nikaṭataḥ vakṣaḥsthāñjalisaṃpuṭaḥ
16. kadācit mayā tam deśam prāptena,
saḥ pumān dṛṣṭaḥ,
vakṣaḥsthāñjalisaṃpuṭaḥ nikaṭataḥ vicāritaḥ
16. Once, upon my arrival at that place, I saw that man, and I observed him closely, with his hands folded at his chest.
यावज्जीवत्यसौ विप्रो निःश्वसित्यहताकृतिः ।
शीतवातातपस्पर्शान्सर्वान्वेत्ति च कालजान् ॥ १७ ॥
yāvajjīvatyasau vipro niḥśvasityahatākṛtiḥ ,
śītavātātapasparśānsarvānvetti ca kālajān 17
17. yāvat jīvati asau vipraḥ niḥśvasiti ahatākṛtiḥ
śītavātātapasparśān sarvān vetti ca kālajān
17. yāvat asau vipraḥ jīvati,
ahatākṛtiḥ niḥśvasiti,
ca sarvān kālajān śītavātātapasparśān vetti
17. As long as that Brahmin (vipra) lives, he breathes, maintaining an undiminished form, and he perceives all seasonal sensations of cold, wind, and sun.
अनन्तरमसावेको नोपचर्य मया बहून् ।
दिवसातपखेदेन विश्रम्भे पातितः शनैः ॥ १८ ॥
anantaramasāveko nopacarya mayā bahūn ,
divasātapakhedena viśrambhe pātitaḥ śanaiḥ 18
18. anantaram asau ekaḥ na upacarya mayā bahūn
divasātapakhedena viśrambhe pātitaḥ śanaiḥ
18. anantaram asau ekaḥ mayā bahūn na upacarya
divasātapakhedena śanaiḥ viśrambhe pātitaḥ
18. Subsequently, that solitary man, though not directly attended to by me for many days, was gradually brought into a state of confidence due to the fatigue caused by the day's heat.
पृष्टश्च कोऽसि भगवन्किमर्थं दारुणं तपः ।
करोषीदं विशालाक्ष लक्ष्यालक्ष्यात्मजीवितः ॥ १९ ॥
pṛṣṭaśca ko'si bhagavankimarthaṃ dāruṇaṃ tapaḥ ,
karoṣīdaṃ viśālākṣa lakṣyālakṣyātmajīvitaḥ 19
19. pṛṣṭaḥ ca kaḥ asi bhagavan kim artham dāruṇam
tapaḥ karoṣi idam viśālākṣa lakṣyālakṣyātmajīvitaḥ
19. ca pṛṣṭaḥ: he bhagavan,
he viśālākṣa,
lakṣyālakṣyātmajīvitaḥ (tvam) kaḥ asi? kim artham idam dāruṇam tapaḥ karoṣi?
19. And when I asked, 'Who are you, O venerable one? For what purpose are you performing this severe asceticism (tapas), O broad-eyed one, whose very self (ātman) is at times visible and at times invisible?'
अथ तेनोक्तमर्थस्ते क इवानेन तापस ।
अर्थे नातिविचित्रा हि भवन्तीच्छाः शरीरिणाम् ॥ २० ॥
atha tenoktamarthaste ka ivānena tāpasa ,
arthe nātivicitrā hi bhavantīcchāḥ śarīriṇām 20
20. atha tena uktam arthaḥ te kaḥ iva anena tāpasa
arthe na ativicitrā hi bhavanti icchāḥ śarīriṇām
20. atha tena uktam: he tāpasa,
anena kaḥ iva te arthaḥ? hi,
śarīriṇām icchāḥ arthe na ativicitrāḥ bhavanti.
20. Then he said, 'What is your concern with this, O ascetic? For indeed, the desires of embodied beings are not particularly unusual regarding their purpose.'
इत्युक्तवान्प्रयत्नेन सोऽनुबन्धेन वै मया ।
यदा पृष्टस्तदा तेन ममोक्तमिदमुत्तरम् ॥ २१ ॥
ityuktavānprayatnena so'nubandhena vai mayā ,
yadā pṛṣṭastadā tena mamoktamidamuttaram 21
21. iti uktavān prayatnena saḥ anubandhena vai mayā
yadā pṛṣṭaḥ tadā tena mama uktam idam uttaram
21. iti mayā prayatnena anubandhena vai yadā saḥ pṛṣṭaḥ,
tadā tena idam uttaram mama uktam.
21. Thus, when I earnestly and persistently questioned him, he then gave this answer to me.
मथुरायामहं जातो वृद्धिं यातः पितुगृहे ।
बाल्ययौवनयोर्मध्ये स्थितः पदपदार्थवित् ॥ २२ ॥
mathurāyāmahaṃ jāto vṛddhiṃ yātaḥ pitugṛhe ,
bālyayauvanayormadhye sthitaḥ padapadārthavit 22
22. mathurāyām aham jātaḥ vṛddhim yātaḥ pituḥ gṛhe
bālyayauvanayoḥ madhye sthitaḥ padapadārthavit
22. aham mathurāyām jātaḥ,
pituḥ gṛhe vṛddhim yātaḥ (ca).
bālyayauvanayoḥ madhye padapadārthavit sthitaḥ (aham).
22. I was born in Mathura and grew up in my father's house. During my adolescence, I became proficient in understanding words and their meanings.
समग्रसुखसंभारकोशो भवति भूमिपः ।
इत्यहं श्रुतवांस्तत्र भोगार्थी नवयौवनः ॥ २३ ॥
samagrasukhasaṃbhārakośo bhavati bhūmipaḥ ,
ityahaṃ śrutavāṃstatra bhogārthī navayauvanaḥ 23
23. samagrasukhasaṃbhārakośaḥ bhavati bhūmipaḥ
iti aham śrutavān tatra bhogārthī navayauvanaḥ
23. aham navayauvanaḥ bhogārthī tatra bhūmipaḥ
samagrasukhasaṃbhārakośaḥ bhavati iti śrutavān
23. I heard that a king (bhūmipa) becomes a treasury of all happiness and resources. Thus, I, in my fresh youth and desiring enjoyment, was there.
अथ सप्तमहाद्वीपविस्तीर्णाया भुवः पतिः ।
स्यामित्यहमुदारात्मा परिबिम्बितवांश्चिरम् ॥ २४ ॥
atha saptamahādvīpavistīrṇāyā bhuvaḥ patiḥ ,
syāmityahamudārātmā paribimbitavāṃściram 24
24. atha saptamahādvīpavistīrṇāyāḥ bhuvaḥ patiḥ
syām iti aham udārātmā paribimbitavān ciram
24. atha aham udārātmā saptamahādvīpavistīrṇāyāḥ
bhuvaḥ patiḥ syām iti ciram paribimbitavān
24. Then, I, with a noble spirit (ātman), reflected for a long time: 'May I become the lord of the earth, which extends over the seven great continents.'
इत्यर्थेन समागत्य देशमित्थमहं स्थितः ।
अत्र द्वादश वर्षाणि समतीतानि मानद ॥ २५ ॥
ityarthena samāgatya deśamitthamahaṃ sthitaḥ ,
atra dvādaśa varṣāṇi samatītāni mānada 25
25. iti arthena samāgatya deśam ittham aham
sthitaḥ atra dvādaśa varṣāṇi samatītāni mānada
25. iti arthena deśam samāgatya aham ittham
sthitaḥ atra mānada dvādaśa varṣāṇi samatītāni
25. For this very purpose, having come to this land, I have resided here thus. O giver of honor, twelve years have passed here.
तदकारणमित्र त्वं गच्छेष्टं देशमाशुगः ।
अहं चाभिमतप्राप्तेरित्थमेव दृढस्थितिः ॥ २६ ॥
tadakāraṇamitra tvaṃ gaccheṣṭaṃ deśamāśugaḥ ,
ahaṃ cābhimataprāpteritthameva dṛḍhasthitiḥ 26
26. tat akāraṇamitra tvam gaccha iṣṭam deśam āśugaḥ
aham ca abhimataprāpteḥ ittham eva dṛḍhasthitiḥ
26. tat akāraṇamitra tvam iṣṭam deśam āśugaḥ gaccha
ca aham abhimataprāpteḥ ittham eva dṛḍhasthitiḥ
26. Therefore, O friend without a specific cause, you should swiftly go to your desired country. And I, for the sake of attaining my objective, am firmly established here in this very manner.
इति तेनाऽहमुक्तः संस्तमित्थं प्रोक्तवाञ्छृणु ।
आश्चर्यश्रवणे चेतः खेदमेति न धीमतः ॥ २७ ॥
iti tenā'hamuktaḥ saṃstamitthaṃ proktavāñchṛṇu ,
āścaryaśravaṇe cetaḥ khedameti na dhīmataḥ 27
27. iti tena aham uktaḥ san tam ittham proktavān śṛṇu
āścarya-śravaṇe cetaḥ khedam eti na dhīmataḥ
27. iti tena uktaḥ san aham tam ittham proktavān śṛṇu
dhīmataḥ cetaḥ āścarya-śravaṇe khedam na eti
27. Being thus addressed by him, I said to him, 'Listen: the mind of a discerning person does not experience distress upon hearing wondrous things.'
साधो यावत्त्वया प्राप्तो न नामाभिमतो वरः ।
त्वद्रक्षापरिचर्यार्थमिह तावदहं स्थितः ॥ २८ ॥
sādho yāvattvayā prāpto na nāmābhimato varaḥ ,
tvadrakṣāparicaryārthamiha tāvadahaṃ sthitaḥ 28
28. sādho yāvat tvayā prāptaḥ na nāma abhimataḥ varaḥ
tvat-rakṣā-paricaryā-artham iha tāvat aham sthitaḥ
28. sādho yāvat tvayā abhimataḥ varaḥ nāma na prāptaḥ
tāvat aham iha tvat-rakṣā-paricaryā-artham sthitaḥ
28. O virtuous one, as long as your desired boon has not yet been obtained by you, I shall remain here for the sake of your protection and service.
मयेत्युक्ते स पाषाणमौनवानभवच्छमी ।
निमीलितेक्षणः क्षीणरूपस्त्वकलनो बहिः ॥ २९ ॥
mayetyukte sa pāṣāṇamaunavānabhavacchamī ,
nimīlitekṣaṇaḥ kṣīṇarūpastvakalano bahiḥ 29
29. mayā iti ukte sa pāṣāṇa-mauna-vān abhavat śamī
nimīlita-īkṣaṇaḥ kṣīṇa-rūpaḥ tu akalanaḥ bahiḥ
29. mayā iti ukte sa śamī pāṣāṇa-mauna-vān abhavat
nimīlita-īkṣaṇaḥ kṣīṇa-rūpaḥ tu bahiḥ akalanaḥ
29. When this was said by me, that ascetic became one who maintained a stone-like silence, with closed eyes, a diminished form, and outwardly indistinguishable.
तथाहं पुरतस्तस्य काष्ठमौनवतोऽवसम् ।
षण्मासान्विगतोद्वेगं वेगान्कालकृतान्सहन् ॥ ३० ॥
tathāhaṃ puratastasya kāṣṭhamaunavato'vasam ,
ṣaṇmāsānvigatodvegaṃ vegānkālakṛtānsahan 30
30. tathā aham purataḥ tasya kāṣṭha-mauna-vataḥ avasam
ṣaṭ-māsān vigata-udvegam vegān kāla-kṛtān sahan
30. tathā aham tasya kāṣṭha-mauna-vataḥ purataḥ
vigata-udvegam kāla-kṛtān vegān sahan ṣaṭ-māsān avasam
30. Thus, I resided before him, who maintained a wood-like silence, for six months, free from agitation, enduring the urges created by time.
अर्कबिम्बाद्विनिष्कम्य तत्प्रदेशान्तरे स्थितम् ।
एकदा दृष्टवानस्मि पुरुषं भानुभास्वरम् ॥ ३१ ॥
arkabimbādviniṣkamya tatpradeśāntare sthitam ,
ekadā dṛṣṭavānasmi puruṣaṃ bhānubhāsvaram 31
31. arka-bimbāt viniṣkamya tatpradeśāntare sthitam
ekadā dṛṣṭavān asmi puruṣam bhānubhāsvaram
31. ekadā arka-bimbāt viniṣkamya tatpradeśāntare
sthitam bhānubhāsvaram puruṣam asmi dṛṣṭavān
31. Once, I saw a being (puruṣa) shining brightly like the sun, who had emerged from the solar orb and was stationed in another part of that region.
स तेन पूज्यते यावन्मनसा कर्मणा मया ।
उवाच तावद्वचनममृतस्यन्दसुन्दरम् ॥ ३२ ॥
sa tena pūjyate yāvanmanasā karmaṇā mayā ,
uvāca tāvadvacanamamṛtasyandasundaram 32
32. sa tena pūjyate yāvat manasā karmaṇā mayā
uvāca tāvat vacanam amṛtasyandasundaram
32. yāvat sa mayā manasā karmaṇā pūjyate
tāvat amṛtasyandasundaram vacanam uvāca
32. As long as he was worshipped by me with my mind and my actions (karma), he then spoke words, beautiful and flowing with nectar.
शाखाप्रलम्बनपर हे ब्रह्मन्दीर्घतापस ।
तपः संहर संहारि गृहाणाभिमतं वरम् ॥ ३३ ॥
śākhāpralambanapara he brahmandīrghatāpasa ,
tapaḥ saṃhara saṃhāri gṛhāṇābhimataṃ varam 33
33. śākhāpralambanapara he brahman dīrghatāpasa
tapaḥ saṃhara saṃhārin gṛhāṇa abhimatam varam
33. he brahman śākhāpralambanapara dīrghatāpasa
saṃhārin tapaḥ saṃhara abhimatam varam gṛhāṇa
33. O Brahmin, who is devoted to hanging from branches and practices long asceticism! Cease your penance (tapas), O terminator (of penance)! Accept your desired boon.
सप्ताब्धिद्वीपवलया पालयिष्यसि मेदिनीम् ।
सप्तवर्षसहस्राणि देहेनानेन धर्मतः ॥ ३४ ॥
saptābdhidvīpavalayā pālayiṣyasi medinīm ,
saptavarṣasahasrāṇi dehenānena dharmataḥ 34
34. saptābhidvīpavalayā pālayiṣyasi medinīm
saptavarṣasahasrāṇi dehena anena dharmataḥ
34. anena dehena saptābhidvīpavalayā medinīm
saptavarṣasahasrāṇi dharmataḥ pālayiṣyasi
34. You will rule the earth, encircled by seven oceans and continents, for seven thousand years with this body, in accordance with natural law (dharma).
एवं समीहितं दत्त्वा स द्वितीयो दिवाकरः ।
गन्तुमस्तमथार्काब्धिमविशत्प्रोदितो यतः ॥ ३५ ॥
evaṃ samīhitaṃ dattvā sa dvitīyo divākaraḥ ,
gantumastamathārkābdhimaviśatprodito yataḥ 35
35. evam samīhitam dattvā saḥ dvitīyaḥ divākaraḥ gantum
astam atha arka-abdhim aviśat proditaḥ yataḥ
35. saḥ dvitīyaḥ divākaraḥ evam samīhitam dattvā,
yataḥ proditaḥ atha astam gantum arka-abdhim aviśat
35. Having thus granted the desired boon, that second sun, since it had risen (and completed its task), then entered the ocean of the sun to set.
तस्मिन्याते मया प्रोक्तं तस्य शाखातपस्विनः ।
श्रुतदृष्टानुभूताग्र्यवरदस्य विवेकिनः ॥ ३६ ॥
tasminyāte mayā proktaṃ tasya śākhātapasvinaḥ ,
śrutadṛṣṭānubhūtāgryavaradasya vivekinaḥ 36
36. tasmin yāte mayā proktam tasya śākhā-tapasvinaḥ
śruta-dṛṣṭa-anubhūta-agrya-varadasya vivekinaḥ
36. tasmin yāte mayā tasya śākhā-tapasvinaḥ
śruta-dṛṣṭa-anubhūta-agrya-varadasya vivekinaḥ proktam
36. When he had gone, I said to that discerning ascetic, who resided on the branch and who was an excellent giver of boons, whose powers were heard, seen, and experienced.
संप्राप्ताभिमतं ब्रह्मंस्तरुशाखावलम्बनम् ।
तपस्त्यक्त्वा यथाप्राप्तं व्यवहारं समाचर ॥ ३७ ॥
saṃprāptābhimataṃ brahmaṃstaruśākhāvalambanam ,
tapastyaktvā yathāprāptaṃ vyavahāraṃ samācara 37
37. samprāpta-abhimatam brahman taru-śākhā-avalambanam
tapaḥ tyaktvā yathā-prāptam vyavahāram samācara
37. brahman,
samprāpta-abhimatam taru-śākhā-avalambanam tapaḥ tyaktvā,
yathā-prāptam vyavahāram samācara
37. O Brahmin, now that your cherished desire has been fulfilled, abandon the asceticism (tapas) of relying on a tree branch, and engage in your natural conduct (vyavahāra) as it presents itself.
एवमङ्गीकृतवतः पादौ तस्य मया ततः ।
मुक्तौ विटपिनस्तस्मादालानात्कालभाविव ॥ ३८ ॥
evamaṅgīkṛtavataḥ pādau tasya mayā tataḥ ,
muktau viṭapinastasmādālānātkālabhāviva 38
38. evam aṅgī-kṛtavataḥ pādau tasya mayā tataḥ
muktau viṭapinaḥ tasmāt ālānāt kāla-bhāvi iva
38. evam aṅgī-kṛtavataḥ tasya pādau mayā tataḥ
tasmāt viṭapinaḥ ālānāt kāla-bhāvi iva muktau
38. Then, by me, the two feet of that ascetic who had thus agreed were released from that tree, which was like a tying post, (a release) destined to take its course in time.
स्नातः पवित्रहस्तोऽसौ चक्रे जप्त्वाघमर्षणम् ।
फलेन पुण्यलब्धेन विटपाद्व्रतपारणम् ॥ ३९ ॥
snātaḥ pavitrahasto'sau cakre japtvāghamarṣaṇam ,
phalena puṇyalabdhena viṭapādvratapāraṇam 39
39. snātaḥ pavitrahastaḥ asau cakre japtvā aghamarṣaṇam
phalena puṇyalabdhena viṭapāt vratapāraṇam
39. asau snātaḥ pavitrahastaḥ aghamarṣaṇam japtvā
पुण्यलब्धेन फलेन विटपात् व्रतपारणम् चक्रे
39. He, having bathed and with purified hands, performed the breaking of his vow (vratapāraṇam) after chanting the Aghamarṣaṇa mantra, using a fruit obtained through merit from a tree branch.
तत्पुण्यवशतः प्राप्तैः स्वादुभिस्तैस्तरोः फलैः ।
समाश्वस्तावसंक्षुब्धावावां तत्र दिनत्रयम् ॥ ४० ॥
tatpuṇyavaśataḥ prāptaiḥ svādubhistaistaroḥ phalaiḥ ,
samāśvastāvasaṃkṣubdhāvāvāṃ tatra dinatrayam 40
40. tatpuṇyavaśataḥ prāptaiḥ svādubhiḥ taiḥ taroḥ phalaiḥ
samāśvastau asaṃkṣubdhau āvām tatra dinatrayam
40. तत्पुण्यवशतः प्राप्तैः स्वादुभिः तैः तरोः फलैः
आवाम् तत्र दिनत्रयम् समाश्वस्तौ असंक्षुब्धौ
40. Due to that merit, we two were comforted and undisturbed there for three days by those delicious fruits of the tree that were obtained through it.
सप्तद्वीपसमुद्रमुद्रितदिश भोक्तुं समग्रां महीं विप्रः पादपलम्बितेन वपुषा तप्त्वोर्ध्वपादस्तपः ।
संप्राप्याभिमतं वरं दिनकृतो विश्वस्य चाह्नां त्रयं सार्धं मत्सुहृदा स्वमेवसदनं गन्तुं प्रवृत्तोऽभवत् ॥ ४१ ॥
saptadvīpasamudramudritadiśa bhoktuṃ samagrāṃ mahīṃ vipraḥ pādapalambitena vapuṣā taptvordhvapādastapaḥ ,
saṃprāpyābhimataṃ varaṃ dinakṛto viśvasya cāhnāṃ trayaṃ sārdhaṃ matsuhṛdā svamevasadanaṃ gantuṃ pravṛtto'bhavat 41
41. saptadvīpasamudramudritadiśa bhoktum samagrām mahīm vipraḥ
pādapalambitena vapuṣā taptvā ūrdhvāpādaḥ tapaḥ samprāpya
abhimatam varam dinakṛtaḥ viśvasya ca ahnām trayam
sārdham matsuhṛdā svam eva sadanam gantum pravṛttaḥ abhavat
41. vipraḥ pādapalambitena vapuṣā ūrdhvāpādaḥ tapaḥ taptvā
saptadvīpasamudramudritadiśa samagrām mahīm ahnām trayam
bhoktum dinakṛtaḥ ca viśvasya abhimatam varam samprāpya
matsuhṛdā sārdham svam eva sadanam gantum pravṛttaḥ abhavat
41. The Brahmin, having performed severe austerity (tapas) by hanging upside down with his body suspended by his feet, and having fully obtained his desired boon from the sun and the universe - which was to rule the entire earth, whose directions are demarcated by seven islands and oceans, for three days together with my friend - then set out to return to his own dwelling.
