हार्दान्धकारशर्वर्या तृष्णयेह दुरन्तया ।

1. The Seventeenth Chapter. Śrī Rāma said: Here, in the endless night of the heart's darkness, spurred by insatiable craving, flocks of owl-like flaws flutter in the sky of consciousness (cetanā).
अन्तर्दाहप्रदायिन्या समूढरसमार्दवः ।
पङ्क आदित्यदीप्त्येव शोषं नीतोऽस्मि चिन्तया ॥ २ ॥
antardāhapradāyinyā samūḍharasamārdavaḥ ,
paṅka ādityadīptyeva śoṣaṃ nīto'smi cintayā 2
2. antardāhapradāyinyā samūḍharasamārdavaḥ | paṅkaḥ
ādityadīptyā iva śoṣam nītaḥ asmi cintayā || 2 ||
2. Due to the inner burning (antardāha) that causes great distress, my vitality (rasa) and tenderness (mārdava) have been completely dried up. I have been reduced to a state of dryness (śoṣa) by anxiety (cintā), just as mud is by the intense radiance of the sun.
मम चित्तमहारण्येव्यामोहतिमिराकुले ।
शून्ये ताण्डविनी जाता भृशमाशापिशाचिका ॥ ३ ॥
mama cittamahāraṇyevyāmohatimirākule ,
śūnye tāṇḍavinī jātā bhṛśamāśāpiśācikā 3
3. mama cittamahāraṇye vyāmohatimirākule | śūnye
tāṇḍavinī jātā bhṛśam āśāpiśācikā || 3 ||
3. In the vast and desolate forest of my mind (citta), which is overwhelmed by the darkness of delusion (vyāmoha), the fiend of hope (āśā) has begun to dance wildly.
वचोरचितनीहारा काञ्चनोपवनोज्ज्वला ।
नूनं विकासमायाति चिन्ताचणकमञ्जरी ॥ ४ ॥
vacoracitanīhārā kāñcanopavanojjvalā ,
nūnaṃ vikāsamāyāti cintācaṇakamañjarī 4
4. vacaḥracitanīhārā kāñcanopavanoujvalā | nūnam
vikāśam āyāti cintācaṇakamañjarī || 4 ||
4. Surely, this flower cluster of anxiety (cintā-caṇaka-mañjarī), adorned with the frost-like effects of words and shining brightly like a golden grove, is now coming into full bloom.
अलमन्तर्भ्रमायैव तृष्णातरलिताशया ।
आयाता विषमोल्लासमूर्मिरम्बुनिधाविव ॥ ५ ॥
alamantarbhramāyaiva tṛṣṇātaralitāśayā ,
āyātā viṣamollāsamūrmirambunidhāviva 5
5. alam antar bhramāya eva tṛṣṇātaralitāśayā
āyātā viṣamollāsam ūrmiḥ ambunidhau iva
5. A mind (āśaya) agitated by craving (tṛṣṇā) serves only for internal delusion; it has come to perverse delight, just like a wave (ūrmi) in the ocean.
उद्दामकल्लोलरवा देहाद्रौ वहतीह मे ।
तरङ्गतरलाकारा तरत्तृष्णातरङ्गिणी ॥ ६ ॥
uddāmakallolaravā dehādrau vahatīha me ,
taraṅgataralākārā tarattṛṣṇātaraṅgiṇī 6
6. uddāmakallolaravā dehādrau vahati iha me
taraṅgataralākārā tarattṛṣṇātaraṅgiṇī
6. Here, on the mountain of my body, flows the surging river of craving (tṛṣṇā), whose form is as restless as waves and which echoes with the roar of fierce billows.
वेगं सरोद्धुमुदितो वात्ययेव जरत्तृणम् ।
नीतः कलुषया क्वापि तृष्णया चित्तचातकः ॥ ७ ॥
vegaṃ saroddhumudito vātyayeva jarattṛṇam ,
nītaḥ kaluṣayā kvāpi tṛṣṇayā cittacātakaḥ 7
7. vegam saroḍdhum uditaḥ vātyayā iva jarattṛṇam
nītaḥ kaluṣayā kvāpi tṛṣṇayā cittacātakaḥ
7. The cātaka-bird of my mind (cittacātaka), even though it tried to restrain its own impulses, has been swept away somewhere by impure craving (tṛṣṇā), just like dry grass by a whirlwind.
यां यामहमतीवास्थां संश्रयामि गुणश्रियाम् ।
तां तां कृन्तति मे तृष्णा तन्त्रीमिव कुमूषिका ॥ ८ ॥
yāṃ yāmahamatīvāsthāṃ saṃśrayāmi guṇaśriyām ,
tāṃ tāṃ kṛntati me tṛṣṇā tantrīmiva kumūṣikā 8
8. yām yām aham atīva āsthām saṃśrayāmi guṇaśriyām
tām tām kṛntati me tṛṣṇā tantrīm iva kumūṣikā
8. Whatever great attachment I develop towards the splendors of virtues, my craving (tṛṣṇā) severs each one, just as a vile mouse gnaws through a string.
पयसीव जरत्पर्णं वायाविव जरत्तृणम् ।
नभसीव शरन्मेघश्चिन्ताचक्रे भ्रमाम्यहम् ॥ ९ ॥
payasīva jaratparṇaṃ vāyāviva jarattṛṇam ,
nabhasīva śaranmeghaścintācakre bhramāmyaham 9
9. payasi iva jarat parṇam vāyau iva jarat tṛṇam
nabhasi iva śarat meghaḥ cintācakre bhramāmi aham
9. I wander in the wheel of worries, just like an old leaf in water, or old grass in the wind, or an autumn cloud in the sky.
गन्तुमास्पदमात्मीयमसमर्थधियो वयम् ।
चिन्ताजाले विमुह्यामो जाले शकुनयो यथा ॥ १० ॥
gantumāspadamātmīyamasamarthadhiyo vayam ,
cintājāle vimuhyāmo jāle śakunayo yathā 10
10. gantum āspadam ātmīyam asamarthadhiyaḥ vayam
cintājāle vimuhyāmaḥ jāle śakunayaḥ yathā
10. With our intellects (dhī) incapable, we are unable to reach our own abode (ātman). We become bewildered in the net of worries, just as birds are bewildered in a net.
तृष्णाभिधानया तात दग्धोऽस्मि ज्वालया तथा ।
यथा दाहोपशमनमाशंके नामृतैरपि ॥ ११ ॥
tṛṣṇābhidhānayā tāta dagdho'smi jvālayā tathā ,
yathā dāhopaśamanamāśaṃke nāmṛtairapi 11
11. tṛṣṇābhidhānayā tāta dagdhaḥ asmi jvālayā
tathā yathā dāhopaśamanam āśaṅke na amṛtaiḥ api
11. O dear one, I am so thoroughly consumed by the flame called craving (tṛṣṇā) that I do not expect any relief from its burning, not even from ambrosia (amṛta).
दूरं दूरमितो गत्वा समेत्य च पुनःपुनः ।
भ्रमत्याशु दिगन्तेषु तृष्णोन्मत्ता तुरङ्गमी ॥ १२ ॥
dūraṃ dūramito gatvā sametya ca punaḥpunaḥ ,
bhramatyāśu diganteṣu tṛṣṇonmattā turaṅgamī 12
12. dūram dūram itaḥ gatvā sametya ca punaḥ punaḥ
bhramati āśu diganteṣu tṛṣṇonmattā turaṅgamī
12. Having gone far and far away from here, and having returned again and again, the mare, maddened by craving (tṛṣṇā), quickly roams to the ends of all directions.
जडसंसर्गिणी तृष्णा कृतोर्ध्वाधोगमागमा ।
क्षुब्धा ग्रन्थिमती नित्यमारघट्टाग्ररज्जुवत् ॥ १३ ॥
jaḍasaṃsargiṇī tṛṣṇā kṛtordhvādhogamāgamā ,
kṣubdhā granthimatī nityamāraghaṭṭāgrarajjuvat 13
13. jaḍasaṃsargiṇī tṛṣṇā kṛtordhvādhogamagāmā
kṣubdhā granthimatī nityam āraghaṭṭāgrarajjūvat
13. Craving, which clings to inert objects, constantly causes upward and downward movement, is agitated and full of knots, just like the rope at the front of a water-wheel.
अन्तर्ग्रथितया देहे सर्वदुश्छेदयाऽनया ।
रज्ज्वेवाशु बलीवर्दस्तृष्णया वाह्यते जनः ॥ १४ ॥
antargrathitayā dehe sarvaduśchedayā'nayā ,
rajjvevāśu balīvardastṛṣṇayā vāhyate janaḥ 14
14. antargrathitayā dehe sarvaduśchedayā anayā
rajjvā iva āśu balīvardaḥ tṛṣṇayā vāhyate janaḥ
14. A person (janaḥ) is quickly driven by craving, just like an ox is driven by a rope. This craving is deeply entangled within the body and is impossible to sever completely.
पुत्रमित्रकलत्रादितृष्णया नित्यकृष्टया ।
खगेष्विव किरात्येदं जालं लोकेषु रच्यते ॥ १५ ॥
putramitrakalatrāditṛṣṇayā nityakṛṣṭayā ,
khageṣviva kirātyedaṃ jālaṃ lokeṣu racyate 15
15. putramitrakalatrāditṛṣṇayā nityakṛṣṭayā
khageṣu iva kirātyā idam jālam lokeṣu racyate
15. Through the persistent pull of craving for children, friends, wives, and so on, this net (jālam) of desires is spread among people (lokeṣu), just as a fowler (kirātī) spreads a net among birds (khageṣu).
भीषयत्यपि धीरं मामन्धयत्यपि सेक्षणम् ।
खेदयत्यपि सानन्दं तृष्णाकृष्णेव शर्वरी ॥ १६ ॥
bhīṣayatyapi dhīraṃ māmandhayatyapi sekṣaṇam ,
khedayatyapi sānandaṃ tṛṣṇākṛṣṇeva śarvarī 16
16. bhīṣayati api dhīram mām andhayati api sekṣaṇam
khedayati api sānandam tṛṣṇā kṛṣṇā iva śarvarī
16. Craving, like a dark (kṛṣṇā) night (śarvarī), frightens even a steadfast person like me, blinds even me who possesses vision, and brings sorrow even to me who is joyful.
कुटिला कोमलस्पर्शा विषवैषम्यशंसिनी ।
दशत्यपि मनाक्स्पृष्टा तृष्णा कृष्णेव भोगिनी ॥ १७ ॥
kuṭilā komalasparśā viṣavaiṣamyaśaṃsinī ,
daśatyapi manākspṛṣṭā tṛṣṇā kṛṣṇeva bhoginī 17
17. kuṭilā komalasparśā viṣavaiṣamyaśaṃsinī daśati
api manāk spṛṣṭā tṛṣṇā kṛṣṇā iva bhoginī
17. Craving (tṛṣṇā) is crooked and soft to the touch, yet it forebodes the venomous discord of poison. Even when merely touched, it bites, just like a black female serpent (bhoginī).
भिन्दती हृदयं पुंसां मायामयविधायिनी ।
दौर्भाग्यदायिनी दीना तृष्णा कृष्णेव राक्षसी ॥ १८ ॥
bhindatī hṛdayaṃ puṃsāṃ māyāmayavidhāyinī ,
daurbhāgyadāyinī dīnā tṛṣṇā kṛṣṇeva rākṣasī 18
18. bhindatī hṛdayam puṃsām māyāmayavidhāyinī
daurbhāgyadāyinī dīnā tṛṣṇā kṛṣṇā iva rākṣasī
18. Craving (tṛṣṇā) pierces the hearts of people, creating illusions (māyā) and bestowing misfortune. It is wretched, just like a black female demon (rākṣasī).
तन्द्रीतन्त्रीगणैः कोशं दधाना परिवेष्टितम् ।
नानन्दे राजते ब्रह्मंस्तृष्णा जर्जरवल्लकी ॥ १९ ॥
tandrītantrīgaṇaiḥ kośaṃ dadhānā pariveṣṭitam ,
nānande rājate brahmaṃstṛṣṇā jarjaravallakī 19
19. tandrītandrīgaṇaiḥ kośam dadhānā pariveṣṭitam
na ānande rājate brahman tṛṣṇā jarjaravallakī
19. O Brahmā, craving (tṛṣṇā), which holds a sheath (kośa) entangled by numerous strings of idleness, does not shine with joy (ānanda), but is like a dilapidated lute (vallakī).
नित्यमेवातिमलिना कटुकोन्माददायिनी ।
दीर्घतन्त्री घनस्नेहा तृष्णा गह्वरवल्लरी ॥ २० ॥
nityamevātimalinā kaṭukonmādadāyinī ,
dīrghatantrī ghanasnehā tṛṣṇā gahvaravallarī 20
20. nityam eva atimalinā kaṭukonmādadāyinī
dīrghatantrī ghanasnehā tṛṣṇā gahvaravallarī
20. Craving (tṛṣṇā) is perpetually extremely impure and causes bitter madness. It possesses long tendrils and dense attachment, like a creeper (vallerī) from a deep thicket.
अनानन्दकरी शून्या निष्फला व्यर्थमुन्नता ।
अमङ्गलकरी क्रूरा तृष्णा क्षीणेव मञ्जरी ॥ २१ ॥
anānandakarī śūnyā niṣphalā vyarthamunnatā ,
amaṅgalakarī krūrā tṛṣṇā kṣīṇeva mañjarī 21
21. anānandakarī śūnyā niṣphalā vyartham unnatā
amaṅgalakarī krūrā tṛṣṇā kṣīṇā iva mañjarī
21. Craving (tṛṣṇā) is joyless, empty, fruitless, uselessly elevated, inauspicious, and cruel, just like a withered sprout.
अनावर्जितचित्तापि सर्वमेवानुधावति ।
न चाप्नोति फलं किंचित्तृष्णा जीर्णेव कामिनी ॥ २२ ॥
anāvarjitacittāpi sarvamevānudhāvati ,
na cāpnoti phalaṃ kiṃcittṛṣṇā jīrṇeva kāminī 22
22. anāvarjitacittā api sarvam eva anudhāvati na
ca āpnoti phalam kiṃcit tṛṣṇā jīrṇā iva kāminī
22. Even with an unsubdued mind, craving (tṛṣṇā) relentlessly pursues everything, yet it obtains no fruit, just like a worn-out lover (kāminī).
संसारवृन्दे महति नानारससमाकुले ।
भुवनाभोगरङ्गेषु तृष्णा जरठनर्तकी ॥ २३ ॥
saṃsāravṛnde mahati nānārasasamākule ,
bhuvanābhogaraṅgeṣu tṛṣṇā jaraṭhanartakī 23
23. saṃsāravṛnde mahati nānārasasamākule
bhuvanābhogaraṅgeṣu tṛṣṇā jaraṭha nartakī
23. In the vast multitude of worldly existence (saṃsāra), which is filled with diverse sentiments, and on the grand stages of the cosmic expanse, craving (tṛṣṇā) is a decrepit dancer.
जराकुसुमितारूढा पातोत्पातफलावलिः ।
संसारजंगले दीर्घे तृष्णा विषलता तता ॥ २४ ॥
jarākusumitārūḍhā pātotpātaphalāvaliḥ ,
saṃsārajaṃgale dīrghe tṛṣṇā viṣalatā tatā 24
24. jarākusumitārūḍhā pātotpātaphala āvaliḥ
saṃsārajaṅgale dīrghe tṛṣṇā viṣalatā tatā
24. In the vast forest of worldly existence (saṃsāra), craving (tṛṣṇā) is an extensive poisonous creeper, overspread with the blossoms of old age, and bearing a series of fruits that bring about downfall and calamity.
यन्न शक्रोति तत्रापि धत्ते ताण्डवितां गतिम् ।
नृत्यत्यानन्दरहितं तृष्णा जीर्णेव नर्तकी ॥ २५ ॥
yanna śakroti tatrāpi dhatte tāṇḍavitāṃ gatim ,
nṛtyatyānandarahitaṃ tṛṣṇā jīrṇeva nartakī 25
25. yat na śaknoti tatra api dhatte tāṇḍavitām gatim
nṛtyati ānanda rahitam tṛṣṇā jīrṇā iva nartakī
25. Even where it cannot succeed, craving (tṛṣṇā) assumes a dancing gait, and dances without joy, like an old, worn-out dancer.
भृशं स्फुरति नीहारे शाम्यत्यालोक आगते ।
दुर्लङ्घयेषु पदं धत्ते चिन्ता चपलबर्हिणी ॥ २६ ॥
bhṛśaṃ sphurati nīhāre śāmyatyāloka āgate ,
durlaṅghayeṣu padaṃ dhatte cintā capalabarhiṇī 26
26. bhṛśam sphurati nīhāre śāmyati āloka āgate
durlaṅghyeṣu padam dhatte cintā capalabarhiṇī
26. Like a restless peahen, anxiety (cintā) intensely flutters in the mist and subsides when light appears. It also takes hold in things that are difficult to overcome.
जडकल्लोलबहुला चिरं शून्यान्तरान्तरा ।
क्षणमुल्लासमायाति तृष्णा प्रावृट्तरङ्गिणी ॥ २७ ॥
jaḍakallolabahulā ciraṃ śūnyāntarāntarā ,
kṣaṇamullāsamāyāti tṛṣṇā prāvṛṭtaraṅgiṇī 27
27. jaḍakallolabahulā ciram śūnyāntarāntarā
kṣaṇam ullāsam āyāti tṛṣṇā prāvṛttaraṅgiṇī
27. Craving (tṛṣṇā), like a rainy season river, is full of sluggish waves, often empty in its depths, and only momentarily comes to exuberance.
नष्टमुत्सृज्य तिष्ठन्तं तृष्णा वृक्षमिवापरम् ।
पुरुषात्पुरुषं याति तृष्णा लोलेव पक्षिणी ॥ २८ ॥
naṣṭamutsṛjya tiṣṭhantaṃ tṛṣṇā vṛkṣamivāparam ,
puruṣātpuruṣaṃ yāti tṛṣṇā loleva pakṣiṇī 28
28. naṣṭam utsṛjya tiṣṭhantam tṛṣṇā vṛkṣam iva aparam
puruṣāt puruṣam yāti tṛṣṇā lolā iva pakṣiṇī
28. Like a fickle bird, craving (tṛṣṇā) abandons a lost person and goes to another person who stands firm like a tree.
पदं करोत्यलङ्घ्येऽपि तृप्तापि फलमीहते ।
चिरं तिष्ठति नैकत्र तृष्णा चपलमर्कटी ॥ २९ ॥
padaṃ karotyalaṅghye'pi tṛptāpi phalamīhate ,
ciraṃ tiṣṭhati naikatra tṛṣṇā capalamarkaṭī 29
29. padam karoti alaṅghye api tṛptā api phalam īhate
ciram tiṣṭhati na ekatra tṛṣṇā capalamarkaṭī
29. Craving (tṛṣṇā), like a restless monkey, finds a foothold even in what is insurmountable. Even when it is satisfied, it still desires further results. It never remains in one place for long.
इदं कृत्वेदमायाति सर्वमेवासमञ्जसम् ।
अनारतं च यतते तृष्णा चेष्टेव दैविकी ॥ ३० ॥
idaṃ kṛtvedamāyāti sarvamevāsamañjasam ,
anārataṃ ca yatate tṛṣṇā ceṣṭeva daivikī 30
30. idam kṛtvā idam āyāti sarvam eva asamañjasam
anāratam ca yatate tṛṣṇā ceṣṭā iva daivikī
30. Having accomplished one thing, craving (tṛṣṇā) immediately moves on to another, for everything it encounters is ultimately unsatisfactory. It strives ceaselessly, as if driven by some divine impulse.
क्षणमायाति पातालं क्षणं याति नभस्थलम् ।
क्षणं भ्रमति दिक्कुञ्जे तृष्णा हृत्पद्मषट्पदी ॥ ३१ ॥
kṣaṇamāyāti pātālaṃ kṣaṇaṃ yāti nabhasthalam ,
kṣaṇaṃ bhramati dikkuñje tṛṣṇā hṛtpadmaṣaṭpadī 31
31. kṣaṇam āyāti pātālam kṣaṇam yāti nabhastalam
kṣaṇam bhramati dikkuñje tṛṣṇā hṛtpadmaṣaṭpadī
31. For one moment it descends to the netherworld, for the next moment it ascends to the sky, and for another moment it wanders through the regions of the directions. Craving (tṛṣṇā) is like a bee within the heart's lotus.
सर्वसंसारदोषाणां तृष्णैका दीर्घदुःखदा ।
अन्तःपुरस्थमपि या योजयत्यतिसंकटे ॥ ३२ ॥
sarvasaṃsāradoṣāṇāṃ tṛṣṇaikā dīrghaduḥkhadā ,
antaḥpurasthamapi yā yojayatyatisaṃkaṭe 32
32. sarvasaṃsāradoṣāṇām tṛṣṇā ekā dīrghaduḥkhadā
antaḥpurastham api yā yojayati atisaṃkaṭe
32. Of all the flaws in mundane existence (saṃsāra), craving (tṛṣṇā) alone causes prolonged misery. It is craving that entangles even someone residing in a palace's inner chambers in great difficulty.
प्रयच्छति परं जाड्यं परमालोकरोधिनी ।
मोहनीहारगहना तृष्णा जलदमालिका ॥ ३३ ॥
prayacchati paraṃ jāḍyaṃ paramālokarodhinī ,
mohanīhāragahanā tṛṣṇā jaladamālikā 33
33. prayacchati param jāḍyam paramālokarodhinī
mohanīhāragahanā tṛṣṇā jaladamālikā
33. Desire (tṛṣṇā), which is a dense mist of delusion and a garland of clouds, bestows extreme dullness and obstructs the supreme light.
सर्वेषां जन्तुजातानां संसारव्यवहारिणाम् ।
परिप्रोतमनोमाला तृष्णा बन्धनरज्जुवत् ॥ ३४ ॥
sarveṣāṃ jantujātānāṃ saṃsāravyavahāriṇām ,
pariprotamanomālā tṛṣṇā bandhanarajjuvat 34
34. sarveṣām jantujātānām saṃsāravyavahāriṇām
pariprota-manomālā tṛṣṇā bandhanarajjuvat
34. For all kinds of living beings engaged in the worldly existence (saṃsāra), desire (tṛṣṇā) is like a binding rope, a garland of minds intricately woven together.
विचित्रवर्णा विगुणा दीर्घा मलिनसंस्थितिः ।
शून्या शून्यपदा तृष्णा शक्रकार्मुकधर्मिणी ॥ ३५ ॥
vicitravarṇā viguṇā dīrghā malinasaṃsthitiḥ ,
śūnyā śūnyapadā tṛṣṇā śakrakārmukadharmiṇī 35
35. vicitravarṇā viguṇā dīrghā malinasaṃsthitiḥ
śūnyā śūnyapadā tṛṣṇā śakrakārmukadharmiṇī
35. Desire (tṛṣṇā) is of varied colors, devoid of inherent qualities, far-reaching, of an impure nature, empty, without any real basis, and possesses the characteristic of Indra's bow (a rainbow).
अशनिर्गुणसस्यानां फलिता शरदापदाम् ।
हिमं संवित्सरोजानां तमसां दीर्घयामिनी ॥ ३६ ॥
aśanirguṇasasyānāṃ phalitā śaradāpadām ,
himaṃ saṃvitsarojānāṃ tamasāṃ dīrghayāminī 36
36. aśaniḥ guṇasasyānām phalitā śaradāpadām
himam saṃvitsarojānām tamasām dīrghayāminī
36. It (desire) is a thunderbolt to the harvest of virtues, bearing fruit as the autumn of calamities, a frost to the lotuses of consciousness, and a long night for the darknesses.
संसारनाटकनटी कार्यालयविहंगमी ।
मानसारण्यहरिणी स्मरसंगीतवल्लकी ॥ ३७ ॥
saṃsāranāṭakanaṭī kāryālayavihaṃgamī ,
mānasāraṇyahariṇī smarasaṃgītavallakī 37

37. She is the actress in the drama of worldly existence (saṃsāra), a bird in the abode of actions, a deer in the forest of the mind, and the lute for the music of desire (smara).
व्यवहाराब्धिलहरी मोहमातङ्गश्रृङ्खला ।
सर्गन्यग्रोधसुलता दुःखकैरवचन्द्रिका ॥ ३८ ॥
vyavahārābdhilaharī mohamātaṅgaśrṛṅkhalā ,
sarganyagrodhasulatā duḥkhakairavacandrikā 38
38. vyavahārābdhilaharī mohamātaṅgaśṛṅkhalā
sarganyagrodhasulatā duḥkhakairavacandrikā
38. She is the wave in the ocean of worldly affairs, the chain for the elephant of delusion, the beautiful creeper on the banyan tree of creation, and the moonlight for the night-blooming lotus of sorrow.
जरामरणदुःखानामेका रत्नसमुद्गिका ।
आधिव्याधिविलासानां नित्यं मत्ता विलासिनी ॥ ३९ ॥
jarāmaraṇaduḥkhānāmekā ratnasamudgikā ,
ādhivyādhivilāsānāṃ nityaṃ mattā vilāsinī 39
39. jarāmaraṇaduḥkhānām ekā ratnasamudgikā
ādhivyādhivilāsānām nityam mattā vilāsinī
39. She is the sole jewel-casket of old age, death, and sorrows. She is always a frenzied, playful woman for the manifestations of mental and physical ailments.
क्षणमालोकविमला सान्धकारलवा क्षणम् ।
व्योमवीथ्युपमा तृष्णा नीहारगहना क्षणम् ॥ ४० ॥
kṣaṇamālokavimalā sāndhakāralavā kṣaṇam ,
vyomavīthyupamā tṛṣṇā nīhāragahanā kṣaṇam 40
40. kṣaṇam ālokavimalā sāndhakāralavā kṣaṇam
vyomavīthyupamā tṛṣṇā nīhāragahanā kṣaṇam
40. Desire (tṛṣṇā) is, for a moment, pure and radiant like light, then for another moment, it is tinged with a patch of darkness. Like a path in the sky, it is also, at times, dense with mist.
गच्छत्युपशमं तृष्णा कायव्यायामशान्तये ।
तमी घनतमःकृष्णा यथा रक्षोनिवृत्तये ॥ ४१ ॥
gacchatyupaśamaṃ tṛṣṇā kāyavyāyāmaśāntaye ,
tamī ghanatamaḥkṛṣṇā yathā rakṣonivṛttaye 41
41. gacchati upaśamam tṛṣṇā kāyavyāyāmaśāntaye
tamī ghanatamaḥkṛṣṇā yathā rakṣonivṛttaye
41. Craving (tṛṣṇā) subsides for the calming of bodily activity, just as the night (tamī), intensely dark with dense gloom, [arises] for the suppression of demonic forces.
तावन्मुह्यत्ययं मूको लोको विलुलिताशयः ।
यावदेवानुसंधत्ते तृष्णा विषविषूचिका ॥ ४२ ॥
tāvanmuhyatyayaṃ mūko loko vilulitāśayaḥ ,
yāvadevānusaṃdhatte tṛṣṇā viṣaviṣūcikā 42
42. tāvat muhyati ayam mūkaḥ lokaḥ vilulitāśayaḥ
yāvat eva anusandhatte tṛṣṇā viṣaviṣūcikā
42. As long as this person remains entangled with craving (tṛṣṇā), which is like a poisonous cholera, for that long this speechless, disturbed individual remains deluded.
लोकोऽयमखिलं दुःखं चिन्तयोज्झितयोज्झति ।
तृष्णाविषूचिकामन्त्रश्चिन्तात्यागो हि कथ्यते ॥ ४३ ॥
loko'yamakhilaṃ duḥkhaṃ cintayojjhitayojjhati ,
tṛṣṇāviṣūcikāmantraścintātyāgo hi kathyate 43
43. lokaḥ ayam akhilam duḥkham cintayā ujjhitayā
ujjhati tṛṣṇāviṣūcikāmantraḥ cintātyāgaḥ hi kathyate
43. This person abandons all sorrow by means of relinquished thought. Indeed, the abandonment of thought is declared to be the mantra for the cholera-like craving (tṛṣṇā).
तृणपाषाणकाष्ठादिसर्वमामिषशङ्कया ।
आददाना स्फुरत्यन्ते तृष्णा मत्स्यी ह्रदे यथा ॥ ४४ ॥
tṛṇapāṣāṇakāṣṭhādisarvamāmiṣaśaṅkayā ,
ādadānā sphuratyante tṛṣṇā matsyī hrade yathā 44
44. tṛṇapāṣāṇakāṣṭhādisarvam āmiṣaśaṅkayā ādadānā
sphurati ante tṛṣṇā matsyī hrade yathā
44. Craving (tṛṣṇā), seizing everything like grass, stones, wood, and so forth, out of the suspicion that it might be bait, ultimately struggles, just like a fish (matsyī) in a pond.
रोगार्तिरङ्गनातृष्णा गम्भीरमपि मानवम् ।
उत्तानतां नयन्त्याशु सूर्यांशव इवाम्बुजम् ॥ ४५ ॥
rogārtiraṅganātṛṣṇā gambhīramapi mānavam ,
uttānatāṃ nayantyāśu sūryāṃśava ivāmbujam 45
45. roga-ārtiḥ aṅganā-tṛṣṇā gambhīram api mānavam
uttānatām nayanti āśu sūrya-aṃśavaḥ iva ambujam
45. Pain from illness and the craving for women quickly reduce even a profound human being to superficiality, just as sunbeams cause a lotus to open.
अन्तःशून्या ग्रन्थिमत्यो दीर्घस्वाङ्कुरकण्टकाः ।
मुक्तामणिप्रिया नित्यं तृष्णा वेणुलता इव ॥ ४६ ॥
antaḥśūnyā granthimatyo dīrghasvāṅkurakaṇṭakāḥ ,
muktāmaṇipriyā nityaṃ tṛṣṇā veṇulatā iva 46
46. antaḥ-śūnyāḥ granthimatyaḥ dīrgha-sva-aṅkura-kaṇṭakāḥ
muktā-maṇi-priyāḥ nityam tṛṣṇā veṇu-latā iva
46. Craving (tṛṣṇā) is perpetually like bamboo creepers, which are hollow inside, full of knots, possess long thorns, and are fond of pearls.
अहो बत महच्चित्रं तृष्णामपि महाधियः ।
दुच्छेदामपि कृन्तन्ति विवेकेनामलासिना ॥ ४७ ॥
aho bata mahaccitraṃ tṛṣṇāmapi mahādhiyaḥ ,
ducchedāmapi kṛntanti vivekenāmalāsinā 47
47. aho bata mahat citram tṛṣṇām api mahā-dhiyaḥ
ducchedām api kṛntanti vivekena amala-asinā
47. Oh, alas, it is a great wonder! Even those of great intellect, with the immaculate sword of discrimination (viveka), cut down craving (tṛṣṇā), even though it is exceedingly difficult to sever.
नासिधारा न वज्रार्चिर्न तप्तायःकणार्चिषः ।
तथा तीक्ष्णा यथा ब्रह्मंस्तृष्णेयं हृदि संस्थिता ॥ ४८ ॥
nāsidhārā na vajrārcirna taptāyaḥkaṇārciṣaḥ ,
tathā tīkṣṇā yathā brahmaṃstṛṣṇeyaṃ hṛdi saṃsthitā 48
48. na asi-dhārā na vajra-arciḥ na tapta-ayaḥ-kaṇa-arciṣaḥ
tathā tīkṣṇā yathā brahman tṛṣṇā iyam hṛdi saṃsthitā
48. Neither the edge of a sword, nor the flame of a lightning bolt, nor the sparks from heated iron, are as sharp, O Brahman, as this craving (tṛṣṇā) situated within the heart.
उज्ज्वलाऽसिततीक्ष्णाग्रा स्नेहदीर्घदशा परा ।
प्रकाशा दाहदुःस्पर्शा तृष्णा दीपशिखा इव ॥ ४९ ॥
ujjvalā'sitatīkṣṇāgrā snehadīrghadaśā parā ,
prakāśā dāhaduḥsparśā tṛṣṇā dīpaśikhā iva 49
49. ujjvalā asitatīkṣṇāgrā snehadīrghadaśā parā
prakāśā dāhaduḥsparśā tṛṣṇā dīpaśikhā iva
49. Craving (tṛṣṇā) is like a lamp flame: it is brilliant, with a dark and sharp tip, sustained by a long wick fed by oil (sneha), pre-eminent, radiant, causing a burning sensation, and difficult to approach.
अपि मेरुसमं प्राज्ञमपि शूरमपि स्थिरम् ।
तृणीकरोति तृष्णैका निमेषेण नरोत्तमम् ॥ ५० ॥
api merusamaṃ prājñamapi śūramapi sthiram ,
tṛṇīkaroti tṛṣṇaikā nimeṣeṇa narottamam 50
50. api merusamam prājñam api śūram api sthiram
tṛṇīkaroti tṛṣṇā ekā nimeṣeṇa narottamam
50. Craving (tṛṣṇā) alone reduces even the wisest (prājña) of men, though he be brave and as firm as Mount Meru, to a mere blade of grass in an instant.
संस्तीर्णगहना भीमा घनजालरजोमयी ।
सान्धकारोग्रनीहारा तृष्णा विन्ध्यमहातटी ॥ ५१ ॥
saṃstīrṇagahanā bhīmā ghanajālarajomayī ,
sāndhakārogranīhārā tṛṣṇā vindhyamahātaṭī 51
51. saṃstīrṇagahanā bhīmā ghanajālarajomayī
sāndhakārā ugranīhārā tṛṣṇā vindhyamahātaṭī
51. Craving (tṛṣṇā) is like a great cliff of the Vindhya mountains (vindhyamahātaṭī): it is terrifying, with widespread dense thickets, filled with dust from dense formations (of clouds or tangled growth), shrouded in darkness, and beset by formidable mist.
एकैव सर्वभुवनान्तरलब्धलक्ष्या दुर्लक्ष्यतामुपगतैव वपुःस्थितैव ।
तृष्णा स्थिता जगति चञ्चलवीचिमाले क्षीरोदकाम्बुतरले मधुरेव शक्तिः ॥ ५२ ॥
ekaiva sarvabhuvanāntaralabdhalakṣyā durlakṣyatāmupagataiva vapuḥsthitaiva ,
tṛṣṇā sthitā jagati cañcalavīcimāle kṣīrodakāmbutarale madhureva śaktiḥ 52
52. ekā eva sarvabhuvāntaralabdhālakṣyā
durlakṣyatām upagatā eva vapuḥ sthitā
eva tṛṣṇā sthitā jagati cañcalavīcimāle
kṣīrodakāmbutarale madhurā iva śaktiḥ
52. Craving (tṛṣṇā) is a singular (ekā), sweet power (śakti) that, though existing embodied and having attained imperceptibility, accomplishes its aims throughout all worlds. It dwells in this world, which is characterized by restless waves and waters agitated like those of the milk ocean.
