मनसैव मनश्छित्त्वा यद्यात्मा नावलोक्यते ।
ममेत्यहमिति त्यक्त्वा तत्तामरसलोचन ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: O lotus-eyed one, if the Self (ātman) is not perceived even after subduing the mind (manas) with the mind itself, then abandon the notions of "mine" and "I". This is the path.
नास्तमेति जगद्दुःखं यथा चित्रगतो रविः ।
आयात्यापदनन्तत्वं महार्णववदातता ॥ २ ॥
nāstameti jagadduḥkhaṃ yathā citragato raviḥ ,
āyātyāpadanantatvaṃ mahārṇavavadātatā 2
2. na astam eti jagat duḥkham yathā citragataḥ

2. Worldly suffering does not disappear, just as a sun depicted in a painting does not set. Calamity attains endlessness, spreading out like a vast ocean.
पुनःपुनरुपायाति जलकल्लोलकारणम् ।
मेघनीलतमःश्यामा संसृतिप्रावृडाकुला ॥ ३ ॥
punaḥpunarupāyāti jalakallolakāraṇam ,
meghanīlatamaḥśyāmā saṃsṛtiprāvṛḍākulā 3

3. The cycle of transmigration (saṃsāra), dark as the deepest blue of a cloud and agitated by its own rainy season, repeatedly manifests as the cause of water waves (i.e., disturbances).
अत्रैवोदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
संवादं सुहृदो सह्यसानौ भासविलासयोः ॥ ४ ॥

saṃvādaṃ suhṛdo sahyasānau bhāsavilāsayoḥ 4

4. Here, they relate this ancient narrative (itihāsa), a dialogue between two friends, Bhasa and Vilasa, on the Sahya mountain peak.
अस्त्युत्सेधजिताकाशः पीठेन जितभूतलः ।
तलेन जितपातालस्त्रिलोकविजयो गिरिः ॥ ५ ॥

5. There is a mountain that has conquered the sky by its height, the earth by its base, and the netherworld by its depth, thus being the conqueror of the three worlds.
असंख्यकुसुमापूरोऽसंख्यनिर्मलनिर्झरः ।
गुह्यकारक्षितनिधिः सह्यनामाऽविषह्यभाः ॥ ६ ॥
asaṃkhyakusumāpūro'saṃkhyanirmalanirjharaḥ ,
guhyakārakṣitanidhiḥ sahyanāmā'viṣahyabhāḥ 6

6. It is filled with innumerable flowers, has countless pure springs, possesses treasures guarded by Guhyakas, is named Sahya, and shines with irresistible brilliance.
मुक्तापटलसंपूर्णैर्भानुभासुरभित्तिभिः ।
भासुरः काञ्चनतटैः कटैरिव सुरद्विपः ॥ ७ ॥
muktāpaṭalasaṃpūrṇairbhānubhāsurabhittibhiḥ ,
bhāsuraḥ kāñcanataṭaiḥ kaṭairiva suradvipaḥ 7

7. It is resplendent, with walls shining like the sun and completely filled with heaps of pearls, and with golden slopes, like the temples of a divine elephant.
क्वचित्पुष्पभरासारो धातुसाराततः क्वचित् ।
क्वचित्फुल्लसरःसारो रत्नशालिशिलः क्वचित् ॥ ८ ॥
kvacitpuṣpabharāsāro dhātusārātataḥ kvacit ,
kvacitphullasaraḥsāro ratnaśāliśilaḥ kvacit 8

8. In some places, there are showers of abundant flowers; in others, it is pervaded by excellent minerals. Somewhere, it reveals the essence of blooming lakes; in other places, it has rocks rich in jewels.
इतो रटन्निर्झरवानितः क्वणितकीचकः ।
इतो रटद्गुहावात इतः षट्पदघुंघुमः ॥ ९ ॥

9. On this side, there are gurgling waterfalls; on that side, whistling bamboos. Here, roaring cave winds blow; there, the humming of bees is heard.
सानौ गीतोऽप्सरोवृन्दैर्वने मृगखगारवः ।
अधित्यकायां मत्ताभ्रो गगनेषु खगारवः ॥ १० ॥
sānau gīto'psarovṛndairvane mṛgakhagāravaḥ ,
adhityakāyāṃ mattābhro gaganeṣu khagāravaḥ 10

10. On the peaks, songs are sung by groups of Apsaras (celestial nymphs); in the forest, there are the cries of deer and birds. On the highlands, there are playful clouds; and in the skies, the cries of birds are heard.
विद्याधराश्रितगुहो भृङ्गगीताम्बुजाकरः ।
किरातगीतपर्यन्तः खगगीतवनद्रुमः ॥ ११ ॥
vidyādharāśritaguho bhṛṅgagītāmbujākaraḥ ,
kirātagītaparyantaḥ khagagītavanadrumaḥ 11

11. Its caves are inhabited by the Vidyādharas, its lotus-filled ponds resound with the humming of bees, its regions are celebrated in songs by the Kirātas, and its forest trees echo with the songs of birds.
स्कन्धेषु देवैर्वलितः पादेषु वलितो नरैः ।
पाताले वलितो नागैर्जगद्गृहमिवापरम् ॥ १२ ॥
skandheṣu devairvalitaḥ pādeṣu valito naraiḥ ,
pātāle valito nāgairjagadgṛhamivāparam 12

12. On its slopes, it is frequented by gods; at its base, by men; and in the nether regions (pātāla), by Nāgas, as if it were another house for the world.
कन्दरेषु श्रितः सिद्धैर्निधानैरन्तराश्रितः ।
चन्दनेषु श्रितो नागैः सिंहैः श्रृङ्गशिखासु च ॥ १३ ॥
kandareṣu śritaḥ siddhairnidhānairantarāśritaḥ ,
candaneṣu śrito nāgaiḥ siṃhaiḥ śrṛṅgaśikhāsu ca 13
13. kandareṣu śritaḥ siddhaiḥ nidhānaiḥ antara āśritaḥ
candaneṣu śritaḥ nāgaiḥ siṃhaiḥ śṛṅgaśikhāsu ca

13. In its grottoes, it is inhabited by Siddhas; within, it is filled with treasures; among its sandalwood trees, it is inhabited by Nāgas; and on its mountain peaks, by lions.
पुष्पाभ्रसंवीतवपुः पुष्परेण्वभ्रपांसुलः ।
पुष्पवात्याभ्रहृद्भ्रान्तः पुष्पपादपपाण्डुरः ॥ १४ ॥
puṣpābhrasaṃvītavapuḥ puṣpareṇvabhrapāṃsulaḥ ,
puṣpavātyābhrahṛdbhrāntaḥ puṣpapādapapāṇḍuraḥ 14

14. Its form is enveloped by clouds of flowers; it is dusty from clouds of flower pollen; its core is agitated by clouds of flower-storms; and it appears whitish due to its flowering trees.
धातुधूल्यभ्रकपिलो रत्नोपलतलस्थितैः ।
मन्दारगैरिव पुरस्त्रीगणैरलमाश्रितः ॥ १५ ॥
dhātudhūlyabhrakapilo ratnopalatalasthitaiḥ ,
mandāragairiva purastrīgaṇairalamāśritaḥ 15
15. dhātudhūlyabhrakakapilaḥ ratnopatalasthitaiḥ
mandāragaiḥ iva purastrīgaṇaiḥ alam āśritaḥ

15. Its slopes, tawny with mineral dust and mica, were extensively frequented by groups of city women who stood upon surfaces of jeweled stones, resembling Mandāra trees.
अभ्रनीलांशुकच्छन्ना मूकरत्नविभूषणाः ।
शिलाः कनकसुन्दर्यो यत्र श्रृङ्गाभिसारिकाः ॥ १६ ॥
abhranīlāṃśukacchannā mūkaratnavibhūṣaṇāḥ ,
śilāḥ kanakasundaryo yatra śrṛṅgābhisārikāḥ 16

16. Where the rocks, like golden beauties, wearing cloud-blue raiment and adorned with silent jewels, appeared as women venturing to meet their lovers on the peaks.
तत्रोत्तरतटे सानौ विनम्रफलपादपे ।
रत्नपुष्करिणीजालवहन्निर्झरवारिणि ॥ १७ ॥

17. There, on its northern slope, on a plateau where fruit trees are bent low with their bounty, and where the water of waterfalls flows from a network of jeweled pools.
चूतद्रुमलतोन्मुक्तपुष्पस्तबकदन्तुरे ।
विफुल्लाङ्कोलपुन्नागनीलनीरजदिक्तटे ॥ १८ ॥

18. A place rugged with abundant clusters of flowers fallen from mango trees and vines, and whose banks were radiant with fully bloomed Ankola trees, Punnaga trees, and blue lotuses.
लतावितानच्छन्नार्के रत्नांशुभम्भास्वरे ।
स्रवज्जम्बूरसस्यूते स्वलोकाह्लादकारिणि ॥ १९ ॥

19. In that hermitage (āśrama), where the sun is obscured by canopies of creepers, which shines with the luster of gem-rays, which is permeated by the flowing juice of rose-apples, and which brings delight to its own inhabitants.
ब्रह्मलोकसमः स्वर्गरम्यः शिवपुरोपमः ।
अत्रेरस्त्याश्रमः श्रीमान्सिद्धश्रमहरो महान् ॥ २० ॥
brahmalokasamaḥ svargaramyaḥ śivapuropamaḥ ,
atrerastyāśramaḥ śrīmānsiddhaśramaharo mahān 20
20. brahmalokasamaḥ svargaramyaḥ śivapuropamaḥ
atreḥ asti āśramaḥ śrīmān siddhāśramaharaḥ mahān
20. atreḥ āśramaḥ asti śrīmān mahān brahmalokasamaḥ
svargaramyaḥ śivapuropamaḥ siddhāśramaharaḥ
20. There is a great, glorious hermitage (āśrama) belonging to Atri, which is equal to Brahmaloka, delightful like heaven, comparable to the city of Śiva, and surpasses the hermitage of the perfected beings (siddhas).
महत्यत्राश्रमे तस्मिंस्तापसौ द्वौ बभूवतुः ।
कोविदौ तु नभोमार्ग इव शुक्रबृहस्पती ॥ २१ ॥
mahatyatrāśrame tasmiṃstāpasau dvau babhūvatuḥ ,
kovidau tu nabhomārga iva śukrabṛhaspatī 21
21. mahati atra āśrame tasmin tāpasau dvau babhūvatuḥ
kovidau tu nabhomārge iva śukrabṛhaspatī
21. tasmin mahati atra āśrame dvau kovidau tāpasau

21. In that great hermitage (āśrama) here, indeed, two wise ascetics (tāpasa) resided, like Śukra and Bṛhaspati in the sky-path.
तयोरथैकास्पदयोस्तथाभूतां सुतावुभौ ।
फुल्लाङ्कुरौ शुद्धतनू सरस्यम्बुजयोरिव ॥ २२ ॥
tayorathaikāspadayostathābhūtāṃ sutāvubhau ,
phullāṅkurau śuddhatanū sarasyambujayoriva 22
22. tayoḥ atha ekāspadayoh tathābhūtām sutau ubhau
phullāṅkurau śuddhatanū sarasi ambujayoḥ iva
22. atha tayoḥ ekāspadayoh ubhau sutau tathābhūtām
phullāṅkurau śuddhatanū sarasi ambujayoḥ iva
22. Then, for those two, who shared a single abode, two sons were born, both pure-bodied and like blossoming sprouts, just like two lotuses in a lake.
विलासभासनामानौ वृद्धिमाययतुः क्रमात् ।
तौ पित्रोः पल्लवे दीर्घे लतापादपयोरिव ॥ २३ ॥
vilāsabhāsanāmānau vṛddhimāyayatuḥ kramāt ,
tau pitroḥ pallave dīrghe latāpādapayoriva 23
23. vilāsa-bhāsana-nāmānau vṛddhim āyayatuḥ kramāt
| tau pitroḥ pallave dīrghe latā-pādapayoḥ iva
23. vilāsa-bhāsana-nāmānau tau kramāt vṛddhim
āyayatuḥ pitroḥ dīrghe pallave latā-pādapayoḥ iva
23. The two, named Vilāsa and Bhāsana, gradually grew. They were like a creeper and a tree [nurtured] on the extensive care (pallava) of their parents.
आस्तामन्योन्यसुस्निग्धौ सुहृदौ वल्लभौ मिथः ।
तिलतैलवदाश्लिष्टौ तौ पुष्पामोदवत्स्थितौ ॥ २४ ॥
āstāmanyonyasusnigdhau suhṛdau vallabhau mithaḥ ,
tilatailavadāśliṣṭau tau puṣpāmodavatsthitau 24
24. āstām anyonya-susnigdau suhṛdau vallabhau mithaḥ |
tila-tailavat āśliṣṭau tau puṣpa-āmodavat sthitau
24. tau anyonya-susnigdau suhṛdau vallabhau mithaḥ
āstām tila-tailavat āśliṣṭau puṣpa-āmodavat sthitau
24. They both were deeply affectionate towards each other, true friends, and beloved. They were inseparable, clinging together like sesame to oil, and their presence permeated [everything] like the fragrance of flowers.
नाऽयुक्तौ पुत्रयुक्तौ तु सुरक्ताविव दंपती ।
एकं द्वित्वमिवापन्नं सममासीत्तयोर्मनः ॥ २५ ॥
nā'yuktau putrayuktau tu suraktāviva daṃpatī ,
ekaṃ dvitvamivāpannaṃ samamāsīttayormanaḥ 25
25. na ayuktau putra-yuktau tu su-raktau iva dampatī
| ekam dvitvam iva āpannam samam āsīt tayoḥ manaḥ
25. tau na ayuktau tu putra-yuktau suraktau dampatī
iva tayoḥ manaḥ ekam samam dvitvam iva āpannam āsīt
25. They were not disunited; rather, they were truly devoted, like a deeply affectionate married couple (dampatī) with children. Their minds were perfectly aligned, becoming one, as if a single entity had attained a dual form.
तौ तथान्योन्यमुदितौ मनोहरतराकृती ।
तस्थतुः स्वाश्रमे मौने सरोज इव षट्पदौ ॥ २६ ॥
tau tathānyonyamuditau manoharatarākṛtī ,
tasthatuḥ svāśrame maune saroja iva ṣaṭpadau 26
26. tau tathā anyonya-muditau manoharatara-ākṛtī |
tasthatuḥ sva-āśrame maune saroje iva ṣaṭpadau
26. tau tathā anyonya-muditau manoharatara-ākṛtī
sva-āśrame maune tasthatuḥ saroje ṣaṭpadau iva
26. Thus, mutually delighted and possessing very charming appearances, they both remained silently in their own hermitage (āśrama), like two bees (ṣaṭpada) on a lotus.
प्रापतुर्यौवनं बाल्यमुत्सृज्य नववल्लभौ ।
कालेनाल्पतरेणैव चन्द्रसूर्याविवोदितौ ॥ २७ ॥
prāpaturyauvanaṃ bālyamutsṛjya navavallabhau ,
kālenālpatareṇaiva candrasūryāvivoditau 27
27. prāpatuḥ yauvanam bālyam utsṛjya navavallabhau
kālena alpatareṇa eva candrasūryau iva uditau
27. navavallabhau bālyam utsṛjya alpatareṇa kālena
eva yauvanam prāpatuḥ candrasūryau iva uditau
27. The two new consorts, having forsaken childhood, attained youth in a very short time, just like the moon and the sun having risen.
जग्मतुर्देहमुत्सृज्य ततस्तौ पितरौ तयोः ।
स्वर्गं जरार्तावुड्डीय नीडादिव विहंगमौ ॥ २८ ॥
jagmaturdehamutsṛjya tatastau pitarau tayoḥ ,
svargaṃ jarārtāvuḍḍīya nīḍādiva vihaṃgamau 28
28. jagmatuḥ deham utsṛjya tataḥ tau pitarau tayoḥ
svargam jarārttau uḍḍīya nīḍāt iva vihaṅgamau
28. tataḥ tayoḥ jarārttau tau pitarau deham utsṛjya
svargam jagmatuḥ nīḍāt iva uḍḍīya vihaṅgamau
28. Then, their two parents, afflicted by old age, abandoned their bodies and went to heaven (svarga), just like two birds flying away from a nest.
पञ्चत्वं गतयोः पित्रोर्दीनवक्त्रौ बभूवतुः ।
तप्ताङ्गौ विगतोत्साहौ पद्माविव जलोद्धृतौ ॥ २९ ॥
pañcatvaṃ gatayoḥ pitrordīnavaktrau babhūvatuḥ ,
taptāṅgau vigatotsāhau padmāviva jaloddhṛtau 29
29. pañcatvam gatayoḥ pitroḥ dīnavaktrau babhūvatuḥ
taptāṅgau vigatotsāhau padmau iva jaloddhṛtau

29. With their two parents having attained death (pañcatvam), they became sad-faced, with distressed bodies, and devoid of enthusiasm, like two lotuses pulled out of water.
तत्रौर्ध्वदैहिकं कृत्वा चक्राते परिदेवनम् ।
लोकस्थितिरलङ्घ्या हि महतामपि मानद ॥ ३० ॥
tatraurdhvadaihikaṃ kṛtvā cakrāte paridevanam ,
lokasthitiralaṅghyā hi mahatāmapi mānada 30
30. tatra aurdhvadehikaṃ kṛtvā cakrāte paridevanam
lokasthitiḥ alaṅghyā hi mahatām api mānada
30. mānada! tatra aurdhvadehikaṃ kṛtvā paridevanam
cakrāte hi mahatām api lokasthitiḥ alaṅghyā
30. Then, having performed the funerary rites, they engaged in lamentation. For indeed, the custom of the world is inviolable even for great individuals, O giver of honor.
कृत्वौर्ध्वदैहिकमथो व्यथयाभिभूतौ शोकोत्थया करुणयार्तगिरा विलप्य ।
चित्रार्पिताविव निरस्तसमस्तचेष्टौ तौ संस्थितौ सुखमशून्यहृदौ विवृत्तौ ॥ ३१ ॥
kṛtvaurdhvadaihikamatho vyathayābhibhūtau śokotthayā karuṇayārtagirā vilapya ,
citrārpitāviva nirastasamastaceṣṭau tau saṃsthitau sukhamaśūnyahṛdau vivṛttau 31
31. kṛtvā ūrdhvadehikaṃ atho vyathayā abhibhūtau
śokotthayā karuṇayā ārtagirā vilapya
citrārpita iva nirastasamastaceṣṭau tau
saṃsthitau sukham aśūnyahṛdau vivṛttau
31. tau ūrdhvadehikaṃ kṛtvā atho vyathayā
abhibhūtau śokotthayā karuṇayā ārtagirā
vilapya citrārpita iva nirastasamastaceṣṭau
aśūnyahṛdau vivṛttau sukham saṃsthitau
31. After performing the funeral rites, then, overwhelmed by anguish and lamenting with pained words born of grief and compassion, those two, as if painted figures, completely ceased all their activities. They remained still and quiet, their hearts full of sorrow, having withdrawn from worldly engagement.
