अन्यमुनिरुवाच ।
तत्र ते नगरं तानि गृहाणि तरवश्च ते ।
क्षिप्रेण शुष्कतृणवत्सर्वं भस्मत्वमागतम् ॥ १ ॥
anyamuniruvāca ,
tatra te nagaraṃ tāni gṛhāṇi taravaśca te ,
kṣipreṇa śuṣkatṛṇavatsarvaṃ bhasmatvamāgatam 1
1. anya-muniḥ uvāca tatra te nagaram tāni gṛhāṇi taravaḥ
ca te kṣipreṇa śuṣka-tṛṇavat sarvam bhasmatvam āgatam
1. anya-muniḥ uvāca tatra te nagaram tāni gṛhāṇi te taravaḥ
ca sarvam kṣipreṇa śuṣka-tṛṇavat bhasmatvam āgatam
1. Another sage said, "Your city, those houses, and those trees there – all quickly turned to ashes, just like dry grass."
तत्रैवं भस्मतां प्राप्ते सुप्ते ते भवतस्तव ।
तनू तथातिसंतापविदारितमहाशिले ॥ २ ॥
tatraivaṃ bhasmatāṃ prāpte supte te bhavatastava ,
tanū tathātisaṃtāpavidāritamahāśile 2
2. tatra evam bhasmatām prāpte supte te bhavataḥ
tava tanū tathā ati-saṃtāpa-vidārita-mahā-śile
2. tatra evam (sarvam) bhasmatām prāpte (ca) te tava bhavataḥ
tanū supte tathā ati-saṃtāpa-vidārita-mahā-śile (āstām)
2. There, as everything thus turned to ashes and your two bodies lay sleeping, they were like massive rocks split apart by intense heat.
स शशाम शनैर्वह्निर्निःशेषीकृतकाननः ।
परिपीतार्णवोऽगस्त्य इवास्तं समुपाययौ ॥ ३ ॥
sa śaśāma śanairvahnirniḥśeṣīkṛtakānanaḥ ,
paripītārṇavo'gastya ivāstaṃ samupāyayau 3
3. saḥ śaśāma śanaiḥ vahniḥ niḥśeṣīkṛta-kānanaḥ
paripīta-arṇavaḥ agastyaḥ iva astam samupāyayau
3. saḥ niḥśeṣīkṛta-kānanaḥ vahniḥ śanaiḥ śaśāma
paripīta-arṇavaḥ agastyaḥ iva astam samupāyayau
3. That fire, having completely consumed the forest, slowly subsided and came to its end, just like the sage Agastya who drank up the ocean.
तस्मिन्नस्तं गतेवह्नौ तद्भस्मेद्धं सुशीतलम् ।
दुधाव कणशो वायुरशेषं पुष्पराशिवत् ॥ ४ ॥
tasminnastaṃ gatevahnau tadbhasmeddhaṃ suśītalam ,
dudhāva kaṇaśo vāyuraśeṣaṃ puṣparāśivat 4
4. tasmin astam gate vahnau tat bhasma iddhām
suśītalam dudhāva kaṇaśaḥ vāyuḥ aśeṣam puṣparāśivat
4. tasmin vahnau astam gate,
vāyuḥ tat iddhām suśītalam bhasma aśeṣam kaṇaśaḥ puṣparāśivat dudhāva
4. When that fire was extinguished, the wind completely scattered its now very cool ash, which had once been kindled, particle by particle, just like a heap of flowers.
ततो न ज्ञायते नासीत्क्वाश्रमः क्व तनू तथा ।
क्व पेटकं बहूनां तत्स्वप्नपूर्जाग्रतो यथा ॥ ५ ॥
tato na jñāyate nāsītkvāśramaḥ kva tanū tathā ,
kva peṭakaṃ bahūnāṃ tatsvapnapūrjāgrato yathā 5
5. tataḥ na jñāyate na āsīt kva āśramaḥ kva tanū tathā
kva peṭakam bahūnām tat svapnapur jāgrataḥ yathā
5. tataḥ kva āśramaḥ,
kva tanū tathā,
kva tat bahūnām peṭakam (āsīt) iti na jñāyate,
na ca āsīt; yathā jāgrataḥ svapnapur (na jñāyate).
5. Afterwards, it is unknown where the hermitage (āśrama) was, or where the body was, or where that collection of many things had gone, just as a city (seen) in a dream vanishes for one who has awakened.
अभावमुपयाते ते यदैवं भवतस्तनू ।
स्वपतस्ते भ्रमवतः संविदेव विजृम्भते ॥ ६ ॥
abhāvamupayāte te yadaivaṃ bhavatastanū ,
svapataste bhramavataḥ saṃvideva vijṛmbhate 6
6. abhāvam upa-yāte te yadā evam bhavataḥ tanū
svapataḥ te bhramavataḥ saṃvit eva vijṛmbhate
6. yadā evam bhavataḥ te tanū abhāvam upa-yāte,
(tadā) svapataḥ te bhramavataḥ eva saṃvit vijṛmbhate.
6. When your two bodies thus disappear, then for you, the deluded and dreaming one, only (your) consciousness (saṃvit) manifests.
तस्मात्क तद्गलबिलं विराडात्मा स च क्व ते ।
दग्धो दग्धस्य सौजस्कः सौजस्कस्यैव देहकः ॥ ७ ॥
tasmātka tadgalabilaṃ virāḍātmā sa ca kva te ,
dagdho dagdhasya saujaskaḥ saujaskasyaiva dehakaḥ 7
7. tasmāt kva tat galabilam virāṭ-ātmā saḥ ca kva te
dagdhaḥ dagdhasya saujaskaḥ saujaskasya eva dehakḥ
7. tasmāt,
kva tat galabilam? ca kva te saḥ virāṭ-ātmā? dagdhaḥ (dehaḥ) dagdhasya saujaskaḥ (asti),
eva ca dehakḥ saujaskasya (asti).
7. Therefore, where is that throat? And where is your universal self (virāṭ-ātman)? The burnt (body) is (merely) the vitality of the burnt, and only the body (remains) of the vital one.
लब्धवानसि नो तस्माद्धेतोर्देहद्वयं मुने ।
अनन्ते स्वप्नसंसारजाग्रतीहावतिष्ठसे ॥ ८ ॥
labdhavānasi no tasmāddhetordehadvayaṃ mune ,
anante svapnasaṃsārajāgratīhāvatiṣṭhase 8
8. labdhavān asi no tasmāt hetoḥ dehadvyam mune |
anante svapnasaṃsārajāgrati iha avatiṣṭhase ||
8. mune tasmāt hetoḥ dehadvyam no labdhavān asi
iha anante svapnasaṃsārajāgrati avatiṣṭhase
8. O sage, for that reason, you do not possess two bodies. You abide here in this infinite waking state, which is (itself) a dream-like cycle of existence (saṃsāra).
तदेवं स्वप्न एवायं जाग्रद्भावमुपागतः ।
सर्वे वयमिह स्वप्नपुरुषास्तव सुव्रत ॥ ९ ॥
tadevaṃ svapna evāyaṃ jāgradbhāvamupāgataḥ ,
sarve vayamiha svapnapuruṣāstava suvrata 9
9. tat evam svapnaḥ eva ayam jāgradbhāvam upāgataḥ
| sarve vayam iha svapnapurūṣāḥ tava suvrata ||
9. suvrata tat evam ayam svapnaḥ eva jāgradbhāvam
upāgataḥ iha sarve vayam tava svapnapurūṣāḥ
9. Thus, this [waking state] is simply a dream that has assumed the nature of a waking state. All of us here, O virtuous one, are merely figures in your dream (puruṣa).
अस्माकं त्वं स्वप्ननरस्तव स्वप्ननरा वयम् ।
अयमेव चिदाकाशः सर्वदात्मात्मनि स्थितः ॥ १० ॥
asmākaṃ tvaṃ svapnanarastava svapnanarā vayam ,
ayameva cidākāśaḥ sarvadātmātmani sthitaḥ 10
10. asmākam tvam svapnanaraḥ tava svapnanarāḥ vayam |
ayam eva cidākāśaḥ sarvadā ātmā ātmani sthitaḥ ||
10. asmākam tvam svapnanaraḥ tava svapnanarāḥ vayam
ayam eva cidākāśaḥ sarvadā ātmā ātmani sthitaḥ
10. You are a dream-person (nara) to us, and we are dream-people (nara) to you. This very consciousness-space (cidākāśa) is always established as the Self (ātman) within its own nature.
ततः प्रभृति संपन्नो भवान्स्वप्ननरो भवन् ।
जाग्रत्प्रत्ययवाञ्जाग्रन्नरो गार्हस्थ्यसुस्थितः ॥ ११ ॥
tataḥ prabhṛti saṃpanno bhavānsvapnanaro bhavan ,
jāgratpratyayavāñjāgrannaro gārhasthyasusthitaḥ 11
11. tataḥ prabhṛti sampannaḥ bhavān svapnanaraḥ bhavan |
jāgratpratyayavān jāgrannaraḥ gārhasthyasusthitaḥ ||
11. tataḥ prabhṛti bhavān svapnanaraḥ bhavan jāgratpratyayavān
jāgrannaraḥ gārhasthyasusthitaḥ sampannaḥ
11. From then onwards, you, becoming a dream-person (nara), became endowed with waking perception, like a waking man (nara) well-established in household life.
एतत्ते कथितं सर्वं यथावृत्तमशेषतः ।
अनुभूतं सुदृश्यं च ध्यानेनैतच्च पश्यसि ॥ १२ ॥
etatte kathitaṃ sarvaṃ yathāvṛttamaśeṣataḥ ,
anubhūtaṃ sudṛśyaṃ ca dhyānenaitacca paśyasi 12
12. etat te kathitam sarvam yathāvṛttam aśeṣataḥ
anubhūtam sudṛśyam ca dhyānena etat ca paśyasi
12. etat sarvam yathāvṛttam aśeṣataḥ anubhūtam ca
sudṛśyam te kathitam etat ca dhyānena paśyasi
12. This entire account, exactly as it occurred, fully experienced and clearly perceivable, has been narrated to you. You also perceive this through meditation (dhyāna).
इत्यादिमध्यरहितोऽयमनन्तरूपः संविद्धनः कचति काञ्चनतापवत्खे ।
तत्फाललोलवपुरात्मनि चिन्मयात्मा सर्गात्मभिर्विकसितैरसितैः सितैश्च ॥ १३ ॥
ityādimadhyarahito'yamanantarūpaḥ saṃviddhanaḥ kacati kāñcanatāpavatkhe ,
tatphālalolavapurātmani cinmayātmā sargātmabhirvikasitairasitaiḥ sitaiśca 13
13. iti ādi madhya rahitaḥ ayam anantarūpaḥ
saṃvidghanaḥ kacati kāñcanatāpavat khe
tat phālalolavapuḥ ātmani cinmayātmā
sargātmabhiḥ vikasitaiḥ asitaiḥ sitaiḥ ca
13. ayam iti ādi madhya rahitaḥ anantarūpaḥ
saṃvidghanaḥ kāñcanatāpavat khe kacati
cinmayātmā tatphālalolavapuḥ ātmani
sargātmabhiḥ vikasitaiḥ asitaiḥ ca sitaiḥ
13. This (reality), devoid of beginning or middle, of infinite forms, a dense mass of consciousness, shines in the cosmic expanse like the luster of gold. That Self of pure consciousness (ātman), whose dynamic form flickers from its very source, manifests within the individual self (ātman) through creative principles (sargātmabhiḥ) that are expanded, dark, and white.
