भानुरुवाच ।
अथेन्द्रेणैवमुक्तोऽसौ राजा राजीवलोचनः ।
मुनिं भरतनामानं पार्श्वसंस्थमुवाच ह ॥ १ ॥

athendreṇaivamukto'sau rājā rājīvalocanaḥ ,
muniṃ bharatanāmānaṃ pārśvasaṃsthamuvāca ha 1

rājīvalocanaḥ munim bharatanāmānam pārśvasaṃstham uvāca ha

1. Bhānu spoke: Then, the lotus-eyed king, having been thus addressed by Indra, spoke to the sage named Bharata, who was standing beside him.
राजोवाच ।
भगवन्सर्वधर्मज्ञ पश्यामि सुदुरात्मनः ।
भृशमस्य मुखे स्फारं धार्ष्ट्यं मद्दारहारिणः ॥ २ ॥
rājovāca ,
bhagavansarvadharmajña paśyāmi sudurātmanaḥ ,
bhṛśamasya mukhe sphāraṃ dhārṣṭyaṃ maddārahāriṇaḥ 2
2. rājā uvāca | bhagavan sarvadharmajña
paśyāmi su-durātmanaḥ |
bhṛśam asya mukhe sphāram
dhārṣṭyam mat-dāra-hāriṇaḥ || 2 ||
2. rājā uvāca bhagavan sarvadharmajña,
mat-dāra-hāriṇaḥ su-durātmanaḥ asya mukhe bhṛśam sphāram dhārṣṭyam paśyāmi 2
2. The king said, "O revered one, knower of all natural law (dharma), I observe a great and excessive audacity in the face of this utterly wicked individual, who abducted my wife."
पापानुरूपमस्याशु शापं देहि महामुने ।
यदवध्यवधात्पापं वध्यत्यागात्तदेव हि ॥ ३ ॥
pāpānurūpamasyāśu śāpaṃ dehi mahāmune ,
yadavadhyavadhātpāpaṃ vadhyatyāgāttadeva hi 3
3. pāpa-anurūpam asya āśu śāpam dehi mahāmune | yat
avadhya-vadhāt pāpam vadhya-tyāgāt tat eva hi || 3 ||
3. mahāmune,
asya pāpa-anurūpam śāpam āśu dehi yat avadhya-vadhāt pāpam (bhavati),
tat eva hi vadhya-tyāgāt (bhavati) 3
3. "O great sage, quickly bestow upon him a curse befitting his transgression. For indeed, the sin incurred by killing one who ought not to be killed is precisely the same as the sin incurred by abandoning one who ought to be killed."
इत्युक्तो राजसिंहेन भरतो मुनिसत्तमः ।
यथावत्प्रविचार्याशु पापं तस्य दुरात्मनः ॥ ४ ॥
ityukto rājasiṃhena bharato munisattamaḥ ,
yathāvatpravicāryāśu pāpaṃ tasya durātmanaḥ 4
4. iti uktaḥ rāja-siṃhena bharataḥ muni-sattamaḥ |
yathāvat pravicārya āśu pāpam tasya durātmanaḥ || 4 ||
4. rāja-siṃhena iti uktaḥ muni-sattamaḥ bharataḥ,
tasya durātmanaḥ pāpam yathāvat āśu pravicārya 4
4. Thus addressed by the best of kings, Bharata, the foremost among sages, promptly and thoroughly pondered the transgression of that wicked individual.
सहानया दुष्कृतिन्या भर्तृद्रोहाभिभूतया ।
विनाशं व्रज दुर्बुद्धे इति शापं विसृष्टवान् ॥ ५ ॥
sahānayā duṣkṛtinyā bhartṛdrohābhibhūtayā ,
vināśaṃ vraja durbuddhe iti śāpaṃ visṛṣṭavān 5
5. saha anayā duṣkṛtinyā bhartṛ-droha-abhibhūtayā |
vināśam vraja durbuddhe iti śāpam visṛṣṭavān || 5 ||
5. anayā bhartṛ-droha-abhibhūtayā duṣkṛtinyā saha,
"durbuddhe,
vināśam vraja!" iti śāpam visṛṣṭavān 5
5. Along with this wicked woman, who was consumed by treachery against her husband, 'Go to ruin, O dull-witted one!' - thus he released the curse.
ततस्तौ राजभरतौ प्रत्यूचतुरिदं वचः ।
सुदुर्मती युवां याभ्यां क्षपितं दुश्चरं तपः ॥ ६ ॥
tatastau rājabharatau pratyūcaturidaṃ vacaḥ ,
sudurmatī yuvāṃ yābhyāṃ kṣapitaṃ duścaraṃ tapaḥ 6
6. tataḥ tau rājabharatau pratyūcatuḥ idaṃ vacaḥ
sudurmatī yuvām yābhyām kṣapitam duścaram tapaḥ
6. Then those two royal ascetics replied with these words: 'O you of very wicked minds, by whom arduous austerity (tapas) has been destroyed!'
अनेन शापदानेन किंचिद्भवति नावयोः ।
देहे नष्टे न नौ किंचिन्नश्यति स्वान्तरूपयोः ॥ ७ ॥
anena śāpadānena kiṃcidbhavati nāvayoḥ ,
dehe naṣṭe na nau kiṃcinnaśyati svāntarūpayoḥ 7
7. anena śāpadānena kiñcit bhavati na āvayoḥ dehe
naṣṭe na nau kiñcit naśyati svāntarūpayoḥ
7. This act of cursing will not affect us two in any way. Even if our bodies are destroyed, nothing of our own inner nature (sva-antara-rūpa) will be lost.
स्वान्तं हि नहि केनापि शक्यते नाशितुं क्वचित् ।
सूक्ष्मत्वाच्चिन्मयत्वाच्च दुर्लक्ष्यत्वाच्च विद्धि नौ ॥ ८ ॥
svāntaṃ hi nahi kenāpi śakyate nāśituṃ kvacit ,
sūkṣmatvāccinmayatvācca durlakṣyatvācca viddhi nau 8
8. svāntam hi nahi kena api śakyate nāśitum kvacit
sūkṣmatvāt cinmayatvāt ca durlakṣyatvāt ca viddhi nau
8. Indeed, the inner self (svānta) can never be destroyed by anyone, anywhere. Know us two to be such, owing to our subtlety, our nature as pure consciousness, and our imperceptibility.
श्रीभानुरुवाच ।
सुघनस्नेहसंबद्धमनस्कावेव शापतः ।
पतितौ भूतले वृक्षविच्युताविव पल्लवौ ॥ ९ ॥
śrībhānuruvāca ,
sughanasnehasaṃbaddhamanaskāveva śāpataḥ ,
patitau bhūtale vṛkṣavicyutāviva pallavau 9
9. śrībhānuḥ uvāca sughanasnehasambaddhamanakau eva
śāpataḥ patitau bhūtale vṛkṣavicyutau iva pallavau
9. Śrī Bhānu said: 'They, whose minds were deeply bound by affection, fell to the ground because of the curse, just like two sprouts fallen from a tree.'
अथ व्यसनसंसक्तौ मृगयोनिमुपागतौ ।
ततो द्वावपि संसक्तौ भूयो जातौ विहंगमौ ॥ १० ॥
atha vyasanasaṃsaktau mṛgayonimupāgatau ,
tato dvāvapi saṃsaktau bhūyo jātau vihaṃgamau 10
10. atha vyasanasaṃsaktau mṛgayonim upāgatau |
tataḥ dvau api saṃsaktau bhūyaḥ jātau vihaṃgamau
10. atha vyasanasaṃsaktau (tau) mṛgayonim upāgatau tataḥ
(tau) dvau api bhūyaḥ saṃsaktau vihaṃgamau jātau
10. Then, due to their attachment to vices (vyasana), they were born into the species of deer. Subsequently, remaining entangled, both of them were born again as birds.
अथास्माकं विभो सर्गे मिथःसंबन्धभावनौ ।
तपःपरौ महापुण्यौ जातौ ब्राह्मणदम्पती ॥ ११ ॥
athāsmākaṃ vibho sarge mithaḥsaṃbandhabhāvanau ,
tapaḥparau mahāpuṇyau jātau brāhmaṇadampatī 11
11. atha asmākam vibho sarge mithaḥsaṃbandhabhāvanau
| tapaḥparau mahāpuṇyau jātau brāhmaṇadampatī
11. atha vibho asmākam sarge mithaḥsaṃbandhabhāvanau
tapaḥparau mahāpuṇyau brāhmaṇadampatī jātau
11. O Lord, in our current birth cycle (sarga), they were born as a Brahmin couple who were extremely virtuous, dedicated to asceticism (tapas), and still possessed a sense of mutual connection.
भारतोऽपि तयोः शापः स समर्थो बभूव ह ।
शरीरमात्राक्रमणे न मनोनिग्रहे प्रभो ॥ १२ ॥
bhārato'pi tayoḥ śāpaḥ sa samartho babhūva ha ,
śarīramātrākramaṇe na manonigrahe prabho 12
12. bhārataḥ api tayoḥ śāpaḥ saḥ samarthaḥ babhūva
ha | śarīramātra ākramaṇe na manonigrahe prabho
12. prabho bhārata api,
tayoḥ saḥ śāpaḥ śarīramātra ākramaṇe samarthaḥ babhūva ha,
na manonigrahe
12. O Lord, O Bhārata, that curse upon them indeed proved potent, but only in its effect on their physical bodies, not in controlling their minds.
तावद्यापि हि तेनैव मोहसंस्कारहेतुना ।
यत्र यत्र प्रजायेते भवतस्तत्र दम्पती ॥ १३ ॥
tāvadyāpi hi tenaiva mohasaṃskārahetunā ,
yatra yatra prajāyete bhavatastatra dampatī 13
13. tāvat adya api hi tena eva mohasaṃskārahetunā
| yatra yatra prajāyete bhavataḥ tatra dampatī
13. tāvat hi adya api tena eva mohasaṃskārahetunā,
yatra yatra (tau) prajāyete,
tatra (tau) dampatī bhavataḥ
13. Therefore, even today, because of that very impression (saṃskāra) of delusion (moha), wherever they are born, they inevitably become a couple there.
अकृत्रिमप्रेमरसानुविद्धं स्नेहं तयोस्ते प्रतिवीक्ष्य कान्तम् ।
वृक्षा अपि प्रेमरसानुविद्धाः शृङ्गारचेष्टाकुलिता भवन्ति ॥ १४ ॥
akṛtrimapremarasānuviddhaṃ snehaṃ tayoste prativīkṣya kāntam ,
vṛkṣā api premarasānuviddhāḥ śṛṅgāraceṣṭākulitā bhavanti 14
14. akṛtrimapremarasānuviddham sneham
tayoḥ te prativīkṣya kāntam |
vṛkṣāḥ api premarasānuviddhāḥ
śṛṅgāraceṣṭākulitāḥ bhavanti || 14 ||
14. tayoḥ te akṛtrimapremarasānuviddham
kāntam sneham prativīkṣya
api vṛkṣāḥ premarasānuviddhāḥ
śṛṅgāraceṣṭākulitāḥ bhavanti 14
14. Upon seeing their charming affection, imbued with a genuine sentiment of love, even the trees, themselves influenced by that sentiment of love, become agitated with amorous gestures.
