शवीभूतमिमं वत्से भर्तारं पुष्पपुञ्जके ।
आच्छाद्य स्थापयैनं त्वं पुनर्भर्तारमेप्यसि ॥ १ ॥

1. Revered Sarasvati said: 'O dear child, cover this husband, who has now become a corpse, with a heap of flowers and place him there. You will obtain your husband again.'
पुष्पाणि म्लानिमेष्यन्ति नो नचैष विनङ्क्ष्यति ।
भूयश्च तव भर्तृत्वमचिरेण करिष्यति ॥ २ ॥
puṣpāṇi mlānimeṣyanti no nacaiṣa vinaṅkṣyati ,
bhūyaśca tava bhartṛtvamacireṇa kariṣyati 2
2. puṣpāṇi mlānim eṣyanti no na ca eṣaḥ vinaṅkṣyati
bhūyaḥ ca tava bhartṛtvam acireṇa kariṣyati
2. puṣpāṇi mlānim eṣyanti na ca eṣaḥ no vinaṅkṣyati
bhūyaḥ ca acireṇa tava bhartṛtvam kariṣyati
2. The flowers will wither, but he will certainly not perish. Moreover, he will soon resume his status as your husband.
एतदीयश्च जीवोऽसावाकाशविशदस्तव ।
न निर्गमिष्यति क्षिप्रमितोऽन्तःपुरमण्डपात् ॥ ३ ॥
etadīyaśca jīvo'sāvākāśaviśadastava ,
na nirgamiṣyati kṣipramito'ntaḥpuramaṇḍapāt 3
3. etadīyaḥ ca jīvaḥ asau ākāśaviśadaḥ tava na
nirgamiṣyati kṣipram itaḥ antaḥpuramaṇḍapāt
3. ca asau etadīyaḥ ākāśaviśadaḥ tava jīvaḥ
kṣipram itaḥ antaḥpuramaṇḍapāt na nirgamiṣyati
3. And this soul (jīva) of his, which is clear as the sky and belongs to you, will not quickly depart from this inner palace pavilion.
षट्पदश्रेणिनयना समाकर्ण्येति बन्धुभिः ।
सा समाश्वासितागत्य पयोभिरिव पद्मिनी ॥ ४ ॥
ṣaṭpadaśreṇinayanā samākarṇyeti bandhubhiḥ ,
sā samāśvāsitāgatya payobhiriva padminī 4
4. ṣaṭpadaśreṇinayanā samākarṇya iti bandhubhiḥ
sā samāśvāsitā āgatya payobhiḥ iva padminī
4. iti samākarṇya ṣaṭpadaśreṇinayanā sā bandhubhiḥ
āgatya payobhiḥ iva padminī samāśvāsitā
4. Having heard this, she, whose eyes were like rows of bees, was consoled by her relatives, much like a lotus plant is revived by waters.
पतिं संस्थाप्य तत्रैव पुष्पपूरप्रगोपितम् ।
किंचिदाश्वासिताऽतिष्ठद्दरिद्रेव निधानिनी ॥ ५ ॥
patiṃ saṃsthāpya tatraiva puṣpapūrapragopitam ,
kiṃcidāśvāsitā'tiṣṭhaddaridreva nidhāninī 5
5. patim saṃsthāpya tatra eva puṣpapūrapragopitam
kiñcit āśvāsitā atiṣṭhat daridrā iva nidhāninī
5. tatra eva puṣpapūrapragopitam patim saṃsthāpya
kiñcit āśvāsitā daridrā iva nidhāninī atiṣṭhat
5. Having placed her husband there, concealed by a mound of flowers, she remained somewhat consoled, like a poor woman who has found a treasure.
तस्मिन्नेव दिने सैषा तस्मिञ्छुद्धान्तमण्डपे ।
अर्धरात्रे परिजने सर्वस्मिन्निद्रया हृते ॥ ६ ॥
tasminneva dine saiṣā tasmiñchuddhāntamaṇḍape ,
ardharātre parijane sarvasminnidrayā hṛte 6
6. tasmin eva dine sā eṣā tasmin śuddhānta-maṇḍape
ardha-rātre parijane sarvasmin nidrayā hṛte
6. tasmin eva dine sā eṣā ardha-rātre sarvasmin
parijane nidrayā hṛte tasmin śuddhānta-maṇḍape
6. On that very day, Līlā, in that inner apartment pavilion, at midnight, while all the attendants were taken away by sleep, (called upon the goddess Jñapti).
ज्ञप्तिं भगवतीं देवीं शुद्धध्यानमहाधिया ।
दुःखादाह्वाययामास सोवाच समुपेत्य ताम् ॥ ७ ॥
jñaptiṃ bhagavatīṃ devīṃ śuddhadhyānamahādhiyā ,
duḥkhādāhvāyayāmāsa sovāca samupetya tām 7
7. jñaptim bhagavatīm devīm śuddha-dhyāna-mahā-dhiyā
duḥkhāt āhvāyayām āsa saḥ uvāca samupetya tām
7. saḥ (Jñapti) duḥkhāt śuddha-dhyāna-mahā-dhiyā bhagavatīm devīm jñaptim āhvāyayām āsa.
tām samupetya uvāca.
7. She (Līlā), out of sorrow, summoned the divine goddess Jñapti by means of her great intellect (dhī) purified through meditation (dhyāna). Approaching her, (Jñapti) spoke.
किं स्मृतास्मि त्वया वत्से धत्से किमिति शोकिताम् ।
संसारभ्रान्तयो भान्ति मृगतृष्णाम्बुवत्तधा ॥ ८ ॥
kiṃ smṛtāsmi tvayā vatse dhatse kimiti śokitām ,
saṃsārabhrāntayo bhānti mṛgatṛṣṇāmbuvattadhā 8
8. kim smṛtā asmi tvayā vatse dhatse kim iti śokitām
saṃsāra-bhrāntayaḥ bhānti mṛga-tṛṣṇā-ambu-vat tathā
8. vatse,
kim tvayā smṛtā asmi? kim iti śokitām dhatse? tathā saṃsāra-bhrāntayaḥ mṛga-tṛṣṇā-ambu-vat bhānti.
8. (Jñapti said:) "O child, why have you remembered me? Why do you hold onto sorrow? The delusions of transmigration (saṃsāra) always appear like water in a mirage."
लीलोवाच ।
क्व ममावस्थितो भर्ता किं करोत्यथ कीदृशः ।
समीपं नय मां तस्य नैका शक्नोमि जीवितुम् ॥ ९ ॥
līlovāca ,
kva mamāvasthito bhartā kiṃ karotyatha kīdṛśaḥ ,
samīpaṃ naya māṃ tasya naikā śaknomi jīvitum 9
9. līlā uvāca kva mama avasthitaḥ bhartā kim karoti atha
kīdṛśaḥ samīpam naya mām tasya na ekā śaknomi jīvitum
9. līlā uvāca: mama bhartā kva avasthitaḥ? atha kim karoti? kīdṛśaḥ? mām tasya samīpam naya.
ekā na jīvitum śaknomi.
9. Līlā said: "Where is my husband now? What is he doing? What is he like? Lead me to his presence; I cannot live alone."
श्रीदेव्युवाच ।
चित्ताकाशं चिदाकाशमाकाशं च तृतीयकम् ।
द्वाभ्यां शून्यतरं विद्धि चिदाकाशं वरानने ॥ १० ॥
śrīdevyuvāca ,
cittākāśaṃ cidākāśamākāśaṃ ca tṛtīyakam ,
dvābhyāṃ śūnyataraṃ viddhi cidākāśaṃ varānane 10
10. śrīdevī uvāca | cittākāśam cidākāśam ākāśam ca tṛtīyakam
| dvābhyām śūnyataram viddhi cidākāśam varānanen ||
10. varānanen cittākāśam tṛtīyakam ca ākāśam
dvābhyām śūnyataram cidākāśam viddhi
10. The Goddess said: O beautiful-faced one, know that the space of consciousness (cidākāśa) is more void than the other two: the space of the mind (cittākāśa) and the third, ordinary physical space (ākāśa).
तच्चिदाकाशकोशात्म चिदाकाशैकभावनात् ।
अविद्यमानमप्याशु दृश्यतेऽथानुभूयते ॥ ११ ॥
taccidākāśakośātma cidākāśaikabhāvanāt ,
avidyamānamapyāśu dṛśyate'thānubhūyate 11
11. tat cidākāśakośātma cidākāśaikabhāvanāt |
avidyamānam api āśu dṛśyate atha anubhūyate ||
11. cidākāśaikabhāvanāt tat cidākāśakośātma
avidyamānam api āśu dṛśyate atha anubhūyate
11. Through the singular contemplation of the space of consciousness (cidākāśa), that reality, which is the very Self (ātman) of the sheath of consciousness-space, is quickly perceived and then directly experienced, even though it does not outwardly manifest.
तस्मिन्निरस्तनिःशेषसंकल्पा स्थितिमेषि चेत् ।
सर्वात्मकं पदं तत्त्वं त्वं तदाप्नोष्यसंशयम् ॥ १३ ॥
tasminnirastaniḥśeṣasaṃkalpā sthitimeṣi cet ,
sarvātmakaṃ padaṃ tattvaṃ tvaṃ tadāpnoṣyasaṃśayam 13
13. tasmin nirastaniḥśeṣasaṅkalpā sthitim eṣi cet |
sarvātmakam padam tattvam tvam tadā āpnoṣi asaṃśayam ||
13. nirastaniḥśeṣasaṅkalpā cet tasmin sthitim eṣi tadā
tvam sarvātmakam padam tattvam asaṃśayam āpnoṣi
13. If you, having dispelled all remaining mental constructs (saṅkalpa), attain steadfastness in that (state of consciousness), then you, without a doubt, will achieve that ultimate reality (tattva), the all-pervading state (pada).
अत्यन्ताभावसंपत्त्या जगतश्चैतदाप्यते ।
नान्यथा मद्वरेणाशु त्वं तु प्राप्स्यसि सुन्दरि ॥ १४ ॥
atyantābhāvasaṃpattyā jagataścaitadāpyate ,
nānyathā madvareṇāśu tvaṃ tu prāpsyasi sundari 14
14. atyantābhāvasampattyā jagataḥ ca etat āpyate | na
anyathā madvareṇa āśu tvam tu prāpsyasi sundari ||
14. jagataḥ atyantābhāvasampattyā ca etat āpyate.
sundari,
anyathā,
madvareṇa tvam tu āśu na prāpsyasi
14. This (reality) is attained through the realization of the world's (jagat) absolute non-existence. O beautiful one, you will not swiftly attain it otherwise, not even through my boon.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा सा ययौ देवी दिव्यमात्मीयमास्पदम् ।
लीला तु लीलयैवासीन्निर्विकल्पसमाधिभाक् ॥ १५ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
ityuktvā sā yayau devī divyamātmīyamāspadam ,
līlā tu līlayaivāsīnnirvikalpasamādhibhāk 15
15. śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti uktvā sā
yayau devī divyam ātmīyam
āspadam | līlā tu līlayā eva āsīt
nirvikālpa-samādhi-bhāk || 15 ||
15. śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca iti uktvā sā devī divyam ātmīyam āspadam
yayau tu līlā līlayā eva nirvikālpa-samādhi-bhāk āsīt 15
15. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having spoken thus, that goddess went to her own divine abode. Līlā, however, through her inherent nature (līlā), remained absorbed in a state of undifferentiated meditative absorption (nirvikalpa samādhi).
तत्तत्याज निमेषेण सान्तःकरणपञ्जरम् ।
स्वदेहं खमिवोड्डीना मुक्तनीडा विहंगमी ॥ १६ ॥
tattatyāja nimeṣeṇa sāntaḥkaraṇapañjaram ,
svadehaṃ khamivoḍḍīnā muktanīḍā vihaṃgamī 16
16. tat tatyāja nimeṣeṇa sa-antaḥkaraṇa-pañjaram |
svadeham kham iva uḍḍīnā mukta-nīḍā vihaṅgamī || 16 ||
16. uḍḍīnā mukta-nīḍā vihaṅgamī iva kham [gacchati] sā
nimeṣeṇa sa-antaḥkaraṇa-pañjaram tat svadeham tatyāja 16
16. She instantly abandoned that body, a cage for the internal organ (antaḥkaraṇa), just like a female bird, freed from its nest, flies into the sky.
ददर्श खस्था भर्तारं तस्मिन्नेवालयाम्बरे ।
संस्थितं पृथिवीपालमास्थाने बहुराजनि ॥ १७ ॥
dadarśa khasthā bhartāraṃ tasminnevālayāmbare ,
saṃsthitaṃ pṛthivīpālamāsthāne bahurājani 17
17. dadarśa kha-sthā bhartāram tasmin eva ālya-ambare |
saṃsthitam pṛthivī-pālam āsthāne bahu-rājani || 17 ||
17. kha-sthā [sā] tasmmin eva ālya-ambare āsthāne
bahu-rājani saṃsthitam pṛthivī-pālam bhartāram dadarśa 17
17. Standing in the sky, she saw her husband, the protector of the earth, established in that very sky-like abode, in a royal assembly (āsthāna) attended by many kings.
सिंहासने समारूढं जयजीवेति संस्तुतम् ।
प्रस्तुतं मण्डलानीककार्यमाहर्तुमादृतम् ॥ १८ ॥
siṃhāsane samārūḍhaṃ jayajīveti saṃstutam ,
prastutaṃ maṇḍalānīkakāryamāhartumādṛtam 18
18. siṃhāsane samārūḍham jaya jīva iti saṃstutam |
prastutam maṇḍala-anīka-kāryam āhartum ādṛtam || 18 ||
18. siṃhāsane samārūḍham,
jaya jīva iti saṃstutam,
maṇḍala-anīka-kāryam āhartum ādṛtam prastutam [tam bhartāram dadarśa] 18
18. He was seated on a throne, praised with cries of 'Victory! Long live!', and prepared to execute the affairs concerning the assembly of states/regions.
पताकामञ्जरीकीर्णराजधानीगृहस्थितम् ।
पूर्वद्वारस्थितासंख्यमुनिविप्रर्षिमण्डलम् ॥ १९ ॥
patākāmañjarīkīrṇarājadhānīgṛhasthitam ,
pūrvadvārasthitāsaṃkhyamuniviprarṣimaṇḍalam 19

19. Characterized by a royal capital palace adorned with flag-garlands, and having an immeasurable assembly of sages, Brahmins, and ṛṣis situated at its eastern gate.
दक्षिणद्वारगासंख्यराजराजेशमण्डलम् ।
पश्चिमद्वारगासंख्यललनालोकमण्डलम् ॥ २० ॥
dakṣiṇadvāragāsaṃkhyarājarājeśamaṇḍalam ,
paścimadvāragāsaṃkhyalalanālokamaṇḍalam 20
20. dakṣiṇadvāragāsaṃkhyarājarājeśamaṇḍalam

20. Characterized by an immeasurable assembly of paramount kings (rājarājeśa) proceeding towards the southern gate, and an immeasurable multitude of women heading towards the western gate.
उत्तरद्वारगासंख्यरथहस्त्यश्वसंकुलम् ।
एकभृत्यविनिर्णीतदक्षिणापथविग्रहम् ॥ २१ ॥
uttaradvāragāsaṃkhyarathahastyaśvasaṃkulam ,
ekabhṛtyavinirṇītadakṣiṇāpathavigraham 21

21. Characterized by an immeasurable multitude of chariots, elephants, and horses heading towards the northern gate, and the conflict of the southern region settled by a single servant.
कर्णाटनाथरचितपूर्वदेशक्रियाक्रमम् ।
सुराष्ट्राधिपनिर्णीतसर्वम्लेच्छोत्तरापथम् ॥ २२ ॥

22. Characterized by the Eastern region's activities being arranged by the lord of Karṇāṭa, and the entire northern barbarian region (uttarāpatha) having been settled by the ruler of Surāṣṭra.
मालदेशसमाक्रान्तसर्वपाश्चात्यतङ्गणम् ।
दक्षिणाब्धितटायातलङ्कादूतविनोदितम् ॥ २३ ॥

dakṣiṇābdhitaṭāyātalaṅkādūtavinoditam 23

23. Which dominated the Māladeśa region and all the Western Taṅgaṇas, and where messengers arriving from Laṅkā, situated on the shore of the southern ocean, were entertained.

उत्तराब्धितटायातदूतवर्णितगुह्यकम् ॥ २४ ॥

24. Where the celestial river was spoken of by the perfected beings from the Mahendra mountain on the eastern ocean shore, and where the Guhyakas were described by messengers arriving from the northern ocean shore.

असंख्यवद्धभूपालकलाकीर्णाखिलाजिरम् ॥ २५ ॥

25. Where the daily sunset, as viewed from the western ocean shore, was described, and whose entire courtyard was filled with the artistic tributes of countless subjugated kings.
यज्ञवाटपठद्विप्र जिततूर्याग्रनिःस्वनम् ।
बन्दिकोलाहलोल्लासप्रतिश्रुद्वनकुञ्जरम् ॥ २६ ॥
yajñavāṭapaṭhadvipra jitatūryāgraniḥsvanam ,

26. It was a place where Brahmins recited in the Vedic ritual (yajña) enclosure, whose clamor surpassed the loud sounds of musical instruments, and where the joyful uproar of bards resonated, echoing to the forest elephants.
गेयवाद्योद्यतध्वानप्रध्वनद्गगनान्तरम् ।
हयहस्तिरथाराजिरजोमेघघनाम्बरम् ॥ २७ ॥

27. The atmosphere was resonant with the elevated sounds of singing and musical instruments, and the sky was made dense, like a thick cloud, by the dust arising from the multitude of horses, elephants, and chariots.
पुष्पकर्पूरधूपाढ्यं गन्धामोदितपर्वतम् ।
सर्वमण्डलसंभाररचितानेकशासनम् ॥ २८ ॥
puṣpakarpūradhūpāḍhyaṃ gandhāmoditaparvatam ,
sarvamaṇḍalasaṃbhāraracitānekaśāsanam 28
28. puṣpa-karpūra-dhūpa-āḍhyam gandha-āmodita-parvatam
sarva-maṇḍala-saṃbhāra-racita-aneka-śāsanam

28. Abounding in flowers, camphor, and incense, where the mountains are made fragrant with perfumes, and where many administrative systems are established with the resources of all dominions.
यशःकर्पूरजलदसुशुभ्राम्बरपर्वतम् ।
रोदसीस्तम्भभूतैकस्वप्रतापजितार्ककम् ॥ २९ ॥
yaśaḥkarpūrajaladasuśubhrāmbaraparvatam ,
rodasīstambhabhūtaikasvapratāpajitārkakam 29
29. yaśas-karpūra-jalada-suśubhra-ambara-parvatam
rodasī-stambha-bhūta-eka-sva-pratāpa-jita-arkakam

29. Whose sky and mountains are exceedingly white like clouds of camphor-like fame, and whose singular splendor (pratāpa), acting as a pillar for heaven and earth (rodasī), has surpassed the sun.
आरम्भमन्थरोदारकार्यसंव्यग्रभूमिपम् ।
नानानगरनिर्माणसोद्योगस्थपतीश्वरम् ॥ ३० ॥

nānānagaranirmāṇasodyogasthapatīśvaram 30
30. ārambha-manthara-udāra-kārya-saṃvyagra-bhūmipam
nānā-nagara-nirmāṇa-sa-udyoga-sthapati-īśvaram

30. Where the king (bhūmipa) is thoroughly engaged in noble undertakings, which are initiated with careful deliberation; and where master architects are diligent in the construction of various cities.
पपाताथ महारम्भा सा तां नरपतेः सभाम् ।
व्योमात्मिका व्योममयीं मिहिकेवाम्बराटवीम् ॥ ३१ ॥
papātātha mahārambhā sā tāṃ narapateḥ sabhām ,

31. Then, she, grand in her design and whose essence was space (vyoman), descended into that ethereal assembly hall of the king, just as mist settles upon a celestial grove.
भ्रमन्तीं तत्र तामग्रे ददृशुस्ते न केचन ।
संकल्पमात्ररचितां पुरुषाः कामिनीमिव ॥ ३२ ॥
bhramantīṃ tatra tāmagre dadṛśuste na kecana ,
saṃkalpamātraracitāṃ puruṣāḥ kāminīmiva 32
32. bhramantīm tatra tām agre dadṛśuḥ te na kecana
saṅkalpamātraracitām puruṣāḥ kāminīm iva
32. te kecana na tatra agre bhramantīm tām dadṛśuḥ
puruṣāḥ saṅkalpamātraracitām kāminīm iva
32. No one among them saw her wandering there before them, just as men do not perceive a beloved woman who is merely a creation of their own thought (saṅkalpa).
तथा ते तां न ददृशुः संचरन्तीं पुरोगताम् ।
अन्यसंकल्परचितामन्येन नगरीं यथा ॥ ३३ ॥
tathā te tāṃ na dadṛśuḥ saṃcarantīṃ purogatām ,
anyasaṃkalparacitāmanyena nagarīṃ yathā 33
33. tathā te tām na dadṛśuḥ saṃcarantīm puragatām
anyasaṅkalparacitām anyena nagarīm yathā
33. tathā te tām saṃcarantīm puragatām na dadṛśuḥ
yathā anyena anyasaṅkalparacitām nagarīm
33. In the same way, they did not see her moving about before them, just as one person (anyena) cannot perceive a city (nagarī) that has been created by the will (saṅkalpa) of another (anya).
प्राक्तनानेव तान्सर्वान्स्वान्ददर्श सभागतान् ।
भूभृतेव सुसंप्रज्ञान्नगरान्नगरान्तरम् ॥ ३४ ॥
prāktanāneva tānsarvānsvāndadarśa sabhāgatān ,
bhūbhṛteva susaṃprajñānnagarānnagarāntaram 34
34. prāktanān eva tān sarvān svān dadarśa sabhāgatān

34. She (the mental projection) saw all her own former acquaintances who were present in the assembly, just as a king (bhūbhṛt) perceives his well-known cities when moving from one city (nagara) to another.
तद्देशांस्तत्समाचारांस्तथा तानेव बालकान् ।
ता एव बालवनितास्तांस्तानेव च मन्त्रिणः ॥ ३५ ॥
taddeśāṃstatsamācārāṃstathā tāneva bālakān ,
tā eva bālavanitāstāṃstāneva ca mantriṇaḥ 35
35. tat-deśān tat-samācārān tathā tān eva bālakān
tāḥ eva bāla-vanitāḥ tān tān eva ca mantriṇaḥ
35. tat-deśān tat-samācārān tathā tān eva bālakān
tāḥ eva bāla-vanitāḥ tān tān eva ca mantriṇaḥ
35. Those countries, those customs, and those very boys, those very young women, and those very ministers.
तानेव भूमिपालांश्च तांस्तानेव च पण्डितान् ।
तानेव नर्मसचिवान्भृत्यांस्तानेव तादृशान् ॥ ३६ ॥
tāneva bhūmipālāṃśca tāṃstāneva ca paṇḍitān ,
tāneva narmasacivānbhṛtyāṃstāneva tādṛśān 36
36. tān eva bhūmi-pālān ca tān tān eva ca paṇḍitān
tān eva narma-sacivān bhṛtyān tān eva tādṛśān
36. tān eva bhūmi-pālān ca tān tān eva ca paṇḍitān

36. Those very rulers, and those very scholars, and those very confidantes, and those very servants and others just like them.
अथान्यानप्यपूर्वांश्च पण्डितान्सुहृदस्तथा ।
व्यवहारांस्तथान्यांश्च पौरानन्यांस्तथैव च ॥ ३७ ॥
athānyānapyapūrvāṃśca paṇḍitānsuhṛdastathā ,
vyavahārāṃstathānyāṃśca paurānanyāṃstathaiva ca 37
37. atha anyān api apūrvān ca paṇḍitān suhṛdaḥ tathā

37. Then also, other unprecedented scholars and friends; and other affairs, as well as other citizens.
मध्याह्नकाले दिवसे घनदावाकुला दिशः ।
अन्तरिक्षं सचन्द्रार्कं साम्भोदपवनध्वनि ॥ ३८ ॥
madhyāhnakāle divase ghanadāvākulā diśaḥ ,
antarikṣaṃ sacandrārkaṃ sāmbhodapavanadhvani 38
38. madhyāhna-kāle divase ghana-dāva-ākulāḥ diśaḥ
antarikṣam sa-candra-arkam sa-ambhod-pavana-dhvani

38. At midday on that day, the directions were filled with the commotion of dense forest fires. The sky, containing both moon and sun, resonated with the sound of clouds and wind.
महीरुहनदीशैलपुरपत्तनमण्डितम् ।
नानानगरविन्यास जङ्गलग्रामसंकुलम् ॥ ३९ ॥
mahīruhanadīśailapurapattanamaṇḍitam ,
nānānagaravinyāsa jaṅgalagrāmasaṃkulam 39

39. Adorned with trees, rivers, mountains, fortified cities, and commercial towns, it was teeming with diverse city settlements, forests, and villages.
द्विरष्टवर्षं भूपालं प्राक्तन्या जरसोज्झितम् ।
प्राक्तनीं जनतां सर्वां समस्तान्ग्रामवासिनः ॥ ४० ॥
dviraṣṭavarṣaṃ bhūpālaṃ prāktanyā jarasojjhitam ,
prāktanīṃ janatāṃ sarvāṃ samastāngrāmavāsinaḥ 40
40. dviraṣṭavarṣam bhūpālam prāktanyā jarasā ujjhitam
prāktanīm janatām sarvām samastān grāmavāsinaḥ
40. (Saḥ dadarśa) dviraṣṭavarṣam bhūpālam prāktanyā jarasā ujjhitam,
prāktanīm sarvām janatām (ca) samastān grāmavāsinaḥ.
40. He saw the sixteen-year-old king, who was untouched by former decrepitude, and also the entire former populace and all the villagers.
सा तानालोक्य ललना चिन्तापरवशाभवत् ।
तस्मिन्नगरवास्तव्याः किं ते सर्वे मृता इति ॥ ४१ ॥
sā tānālokya lalanā cintāparavaśābhavat ,
tasminnagaravāstavyāḥ kiṃ te sarve mṛtā iti 41
41. sā tān ālokya lalanā cintāparavaśā abhavat
tasmin nagara vastavyāḥ kim te sarve mṛtāḥ iti
41. sā lalanā tān ālokya cintāparavaśā abhavat.
(Sā acintayat) iti kim te sarve tasmin nagara vastavyāḥ mṛtāḥ.
41. Having seen them, that woman (lalanā) became overwhelmed by anxiety, wondering, 'Are all those residents who were in that city dead?'
पुनः प्रज्ञप्तिबोधेन प्राक्तनान्तःपुरं गता ।
क्षणेन च ददर्शात्र सार्धरात्रे तथैव तान् ॥ ४२ ॥
punaḥ prajñaptibodhena prāktanāntaḥpuraṃ gatā ,
kṣaṇena ca dadarśātra sārdharātre tathaiva tān 42
42. punar prajñaptibodhena prāktana antaḥpuram gatā
kṣaṇena ca dadarśa atra sārdharātre tathā eva tān

42. Then, through the awakening of her clear understanding (prajñaptibodhena), she again went to the former inner palace (antaḥpuram). And there, in an instant, at midnight, she saw them just as they had been.
अथ सोत्थापयामास निद्राक्रान्तं सखीजनम् ।
आह चातीव मे दुःखमास्थानं दीयतामिति ॥ ४३ ॥
atha sotthāpayāmāsa nidrākrāntaṃ sakhījanam ,
āha cātīva me duḥkhamāsthānaṃ dīyatāmiti 43
43. atha sā utthāpayāmāsa nidrākrāntam sakhījanam
āha ca atīva me duḥkham āsthānam dīyatām iti
43. atha sā nidrākrāntam sakhījanam utthāpayāmāsa ca āha,
me duḥkham atīva,

43. Then she awoke her sleepy companions and said, 'My distress is immense; let an audience be granted!'
भर्तुः सिंहासनस्यास्य पार्श्वे तिष्ठाम्यहं यदि ।
पश्यामि स्वभ्यसंघातं तत्प्रजीवामि नान्यथा ॥ ४४ ॥
bhartuḥ siṃhāsanasyāsya pārśve tiṣṭhāmyahaṃ yadi ,
paśyāmi svabhyasaṃghātaṃ tatprajīvāmi nānyathā 44
44. bhartuḥ siṃhāsanasya asya pārśve tiṣṭhāmi aham yadi
paśyāmi svabhyasaṃghātam tat prajīvāmi na anyathā
44. yadi aham asya bhartuḥ siṃhāsanasya pārśve tiṣṭhāmi,
svabhyasaṃghātam paśyāmi,
tat prajīvāmi,
anyathā na
44. If I stand by the side of this throne of my husband and see the assembly of esteemed citizens, then I shall live; otherwise, I shall not.
स राजपरिवारोऽथ तयेत्युक्ते यथाक्रमम् ।
आसीद्विनिद्रः संव्यग्रः सर्वः सर्वस्वकर्मणि ॥ ४५ ॥
sa rājaparivāro'tha tayetyukte yathākramam ,
āsīdvinidraḥ saṃvyagraḥ sarvaḥ sarvasvakarmaṇi 45
45. saḥ rājaparivāraḥ atha tayā iti ukte yathākramam
āsīt vinidraḥ saṃvyagraḥ sarvaḥ sarvasvakarmaṇi

45. Then, when she had spoken thus, the entire royal household awoke and became fully engaged, each in their respective duties.
पौरान्सभ्यात्समानेतुं ययुर्याष्टीकपङ्क्तयः ।
व्यवहारं कलयितुमुर्व्यामर्ककरा इव ॥ ४६ ॥
paurānsabhyātsamānetuṃ yayuryāṣṭīkapaṅktayaḥ ,
vyavahāraṃ kalayitumurvyāmarkakarā iva 46
46. paurān sabhyān samānetum yayuḥ yāṣṭīkapaṅktayaḥ
vyavahāram kalayitum urvyām arkakarāḥ iva

46. Lines of mace-bearers went to summon the citizens and members of the assembly, to conduct the proceedings, just as the sun's rays spread across the earth.
आस्थानभूमिं भृत्याश्च मार्जयामासुरादृताः ।
प्रावृट्पयोदमलिन खं शरद्वासरा इव ॥ ४७ ॥
āsthānabhūmiṃ bhṛtyāśca mārjayāmāsurādṛtāḥ ,
prāvṛṭpayodamalina khaṃ śaradvāsarā iva 47
47. āsthānabhūmim bhṛtyāḥ ca mārjayāmāsuḥ ādṛtāḥ
prāvṛṭpayodamalinam kham śaradvasarāḥ iva

47. The servants respectfully cleaned the audience hall, just as the days of autumn clear the sky, which had been darkened by monsoon clouds.
अङ्गणं प्रति दीपौघास्तस्थुः पीततमोम्भसः ।
आश्चर्यदर्शनायेव संप्राप्ता ऋक्षपङ्क्तयः ॥ ४८ ॥
aṅgaṇaṃ prati dīpaughāstasthuḥ pītatamombhasaḥ ,
āścaryadarśanāyeva saṃprāptā ṛkṣapaṅktayaḥ 48
48. aṅgaṇam prati dīpaughāḥ tasthuḥ pītatamobhasaḥ
āścaryadarśanāya iva samprāptāḥ ṛkṣapaṅktayaḥ

48. Rows of lamps, with a yellowish-dark glow, stood facing the courtyard, as if lines of stars had arrived to witness the marvel.
जनताः पूरयामासुः पूरैरजिरभूमिकाः ।
अब्धीन्प्रलयसंशुष्कान्पुरासर्ग इवाम्भसा ॥ ४९ ॥
janatāḥ pūrayāmāsuḥ pūrairajirabhūmikāḥ ,
abdhīnpralayasaṃśuṣkānpurāsarga ivāmbhasā 49
49. janatāḥ pūrayāmāsuḥ pūraiḥ ajirabhūmikāḥ
abdhīn pralayasaṃśuṣkān purāsargaḥ iva ambhasā

49. The people filled the courtyards with their throngs, just as the primordial creation filled the oceans, which had completely dried up during the cosmic dissolution (pralaya), with water.
आजग्मुर्मन्त्रिसामन्ताः स्वंस्वं स्थानमनिन्दिताः ।
त्रैलोक्ये पुनरुत्पन्ने लोकपाला यथा दिशः ॥ ५० ॥
ājagmurmantrisāmantāḥ svaṃsvaṃ sthānamaninditāḥ ,
trailokye punarutpanne lokapālā yathā diśaḥ 50
50. ājagmuḥ mantrisāmantāḥ svam svam sthānam aninditāḥ

50. The blameless ministers and feudal lords arrived at their respective places, just as the guardians of the worlds (lokapālāḥ) (take up) the directions when the three worlds (trailokya) are recreated.
ववुराकीर्णकर्पूरसान्द्रावश्यायशीतलाः ।
उत्फुल्लकुसुमोद्वान्तमांसलामोदितानिलाः ॥ ५१ ॥

51. The winds blew, cool with the thick dew that felt like scattered camphor, and fragrant from the abundant perfume exhaled by the fully bloomed flowers.
पर्यन्तेषु प्रतीहारास्तस्थुर्धवलवाससः ।
ऋष्यमूकार्कतापार्तमेघमाला इवाद्रिषु ॥ ५२ ॥

52. At the borders, the white-robed doorkeepers stood, resembling a cloud bank on mountains, afflicted by the sun's intense heat over the Ṛṣyamūka range.
प्रभापीततमः पुञ्जाः पेतुः पुष्पोत्करा भुवि ।
चण्डमारुतविध्वस्तास्तारकानिकरा इव ॥ ५३ ॥
prabhāpītatamaḥ puñjāḥ petuḥ puṣpotkarā bhuvi ,

53. Masses of flowers, appearing as if their darkness had been completely consumed by light, fell to the ground like clusters of stars scattered by fierce winds.
आस्थानं पूरयामासुर्महीपालानुयायिनः ।
उत्फुल्लकमलोत्कीर्णं हंसा इव सरोवरम् ॥ ५४ ॥
āsthānaṃ pūrayāmāsurmahīpālānuyāyinaḥ ,
utphullakamalotkīrṇaṃ haṃsā iva sarovaram 54

54. The king's followers filled the royal court, just as swans fill a lake adorned with blooming lotuses.
सिंहासनसमीपस्थे हैमचित्रासने नवे ।
उपाविशदसौ लीला लीलेव स्मरचेतसि ॥ ५५ ॥
siṃhāsanasamīpasthe haimacitrāsane nave ,
upāviśadasau līlā līleva smaracetasi 55

55. Līlā sat down on a new, golden, splendidly adorned seat near the throne, much like a playful display (līlā) manifests in Cupid's (Smara) mind.
ददर्श तान्नृपान्सर्वान्पूर्वानेव यथास्थितान् ।
गुरूनार्यान्सखीन्सभ्यान्सुहृत्संबन्धिबान्धवान् ॥ ५६ ॥
dadarśa tānnṛpānsarvānpūrvāneva yathāsthitān ,
gurūnāryānsakhīnsabhyānsuhṛtsaṃbandhibāndhavān 56
56. dadarśa tān nṛpān sarvān pūrvān eva yathāsthitān
gurūn āryān sakhīn sabhyān suhṛtsambandhibāndhavān
56. sā tān sarvān nṛpān pūrvān eva yathāsthitān gurūn āryān sakhīn sabhyān suhṛtsambandhibāndhavān dadarśa.
56. She saw all those kings, preceptors (guru), noble persons, friends, assembly members, well-wishers, relatives, and kinsmen, exactly as they had been positioned before.
सकलमेव हि पूर्ववदेव सा समवलोक्य मुदं परमां ययौ ।
नृपतिराष्ट्रजनं खलु जीवनाभ्युदितया च बभौ शशिवच्छ्रिया ॥ ५७ ॥
sakalameva hi pūrvavadeva sā samavalokya mudaṃ paramāṃ yayau ,
nṛpatirāṣṭrajanaṃ khalu jīvanābhyuditayā ca babhau śaśivacchriyā 57
57. sakalam eva hi pūrvavat eva sā
samavolokya mudam paramām yayau
nṛpatirāṣṭrajanām khalu
jīvanābhyuditayā ca babhau śaśivat śriyā
57. sā sakalam eva hi pūrvavat eva samavolokya paramām mudam yayau.

57. Indeed, having observed everything exactly as it was before, she attained supreme joy. And the king and the people of the kingdom truly shone with revitalized splendor, like the moon, due to the resurgence of life.
