अथ तत्याहमपतं दीप्यमानवपुः पुरः ।
किंचिद्विक्षोभितसभः खान्नक्षत्रमिवाचले ॥ १ ॥

apatam acale khāt nakṣatram iva kiṃcitvikṣobhitasabhaḥ
1. Sri Vasiṣṭha said: Then, I descended there in front, radiant in body, slightly stirring the assembly, much like a star falling from the sky onto a mountain.
चुक्षोभ वायसास्थानं नीलोत्पलसरःसमम् ।
मत्पातमन्दवातेन भूकम्पेनेव सागरः ॥ २ ॥
cukṣobha vāyasāsthānaṃ nīlotpalasaraḥsamam ,
matpātamandavātena bhūkampeneva sāgaraḥ 2
2. cukṣobha vāyasāsthānam nīlotpalasarasasamam
matpātamandavātena bhūkampena iva sāgaraḥ
2. matpātamandavātena vāyasāsthānam
nīlotpalasarasasamam cukṣobha bhūkampena sāgaraḥ iva
2. The dwelling of the crows (vāyasāsthānam), which resembled a lake adorned with blue lotuses, was agitated by the gentle breeze of my descent, just as the ocean is by an earthquake.
अशङ्कितमपि प्राप्तं दर्शनान्मामनन्तरम् ।
भुशुण्डस्तु वसिष्ठोऽयं प्राप्त इत्यवबुद्धवान् ॥ ३ ॥
aśaṅkitamapi prāptaṃ darśanānmāmanantaram ,
bhuśuṇḍastu vasiṣṭho'yaṃ prāpta ityavabuddhavān 3
3. aśaṅkitam api prāptam darśanāt mām anantaram
bhūśuṇḍaḥ tu vasiṣṭhaḥ ayam prāptaḥ iti avabuddhavān
3. bhūśuṇḍaḥ tu anantaram mām aśaṅkitam api
darśanāt avabuddhavān iti ayam vasiṣṭhaḥ prāptaḥ
3. Though my arrival was unexpected, Bhūśuṇḍa immediately recognized me from my very sight, realizing, "This is Vasiṣṭha who has arrived."
पत्रपुञ्जात्समुत्तस्थौ मेघशाव इवाचलात् ।
हे मुने स्वागतमिति प्रोवाच मधुराक्षरम् ॥ ४ ॥
patrapuñjātsamuttasthau meghaśāva ivācalāt ,
he mune svāgatamiti provāca madhurākṣaram 4
4. patrapuñjāt samuttasthau meghaśāvaḥ iva acalāt
he mune svāgatam iti provāca madhurākṣaram
4. saḥ patrapuñjāt samuttasthau acalāt meghaśāvaḥ
iva madhurākṣaram provāca he mune svāgatam iti
4. He arose from his bed of leaves, like a young cloud rising from a mountain, and addressed me with sweet words, saying, "O sage! Welcome!"
संकल्पमात्रजाताभ्यां कराभ्यां कुसुमाञ्जलिम् ।
मह्यमाशु तदैवादान्मेघो हैममिवोत्करम् ॥ ५ ॥
saṃkalpamātrajātābhyāṃ karābhyāṃ kusumāñjalim ,
mahyamāśu tadaivādānmegho haimamivotkaram 5
5. saṅkalpamātrajātābhyām karābhyām kusumāñjalim
mahyam āśu tadā eva adāt meghaḥ haimam iva utkaram
5. meghaḥ haimam utkaram iva,
saṅkalpamātrajātābhyām karābhyām kusumāñjalim mahyam āśu tadā eva adāt
5. He immediately offered me a handful of flowers, which had appeared from his mere will, just as a cloud might yield a heap of snow or hail.
इदमासनमिप्युक्त्वा नवं कल्पतरुच्छदम् ।
उपानीतवति त्यक्तभृत्ये वायसनायके ॥ ६ ॥
idamāsanamipyuktvā navaṃ kalpatarucchadam ,
upānītavati tyaktabhṛtye vāyasanāyake 6
6. idam āsanam iti uktvā navam kalpatarucchadam
upānītavati tyaktabhṛtye vāyasanāyake
6. vāyasanāyake tyaktabhṛtye "idam āsanam" iti
uktvā navam kalpatarucchadam upānītavati
6. When the chief of the crows, having set aside his usual attendants, brought a new seat made of "kalpataru" leaves, saying, "This is your seat."
भुशुण्ड उत्थिते स्वीयकलापक्षेषु पक्षिषु ।
उपविष्टं मुनिं दृष्ट्वा स्वासनोन्मुखदृष्टिषु ॥ ७ ॥
bhuśuṇḍa utthite svīyakalāpakṣeṣu pakṣiṣu ,
upaviṣṭaṃ muniṃ dṛṣṭvā svāsanonmukhadṛṣṭiṣu 7
7. bhuśuṇḍe utthite svīyakalāpakṣeṣu pakṣiṣu
upaviṣṭam munim dṛṣṭvā svāsanomukhadṛṣṭiṣu
7. bhuśuṇḍe utthite svīyakalāpakṣeṣu pakṣiṣu
svāsanomukhadṛṣṭiṣu upaviṣṭam munim dṛṣṭvā
7. Upon seeing the sage (muni) who was already seated, (this occurred) as Bhuśuṇḍa rose and his own flock of birds cast their gaze towards their respective seats.
समन्तात्खगवृन्देन भुशुण्डेन समं ततः ।
तस्मिन्कल्पलतापुञ्जे ह्युपविष्टोऽहमासने ॥ ८ ॥
samantātkhagavṛndena bhuśuṇḍena samaṃ tataḥ ,
tasminkalpalatāpuñje hyupaviṣṭo'hamāsane 8
8. samantāt khagavṛndena bhuśuṇḍena samam tataḥ
tasmin kalpalatāpuñje hi upaviṣṭaḥ aham āsane
8. tataḥ hi aham bhuśuṇḍena samam samantāt
khagavṛndena tasmin kalpalatāpuñje āsane upaviṣṭaḥ
8. Then, indeed, I sat on a seat within that thicket of wish-fulfilling creepers, accompanied by Bhuśuṇḍa and surrounded by the entire flock of birds.
अर्घ्यपाद्यादि संपाद्य भुशुण्डस्तुष्टमानसः ।
मामुवाच महातेजाः सौहृदान्मधुराक्षरम् ॥ ९ ॥
arghyapādyādi saṃpādya bhuśuṇḍastuṣṭamānasaḥ ,
māmuvāca mahātejāḥ sauhṛdānmadhurākṣaram 9
9. arghyapādyādi saṃpādya bhūśuṇḍaḥ tuṣṭamānasaḥ
mām uvāca mahātejāḥ sauhṛdāt madhurākṣaram
9. mahātejāḥ tuṣṭamānasaḥ bhūśuṇḍaḥ arghyapādyādi
saṃpādya sauhṛdāt madhurākṣaram mām uvāca
9. The greatly radiant Bhusunda, with a contented mind, having prepared the respectful offerings of water for washing hands (arghya) and feet (padya), spoke to me with sweet words born of friendship.
भुशुण्ड उवाच ।
अहो भगवताऽस्माकं प्रसादो दर्शितश्चिरात् ।
दर्शनामृतसेकेन यत्सिक्ताः सद्द्रुमा वयम् ॥ १० ॥
bhuśuṇḍa uvāca ,
aho bhagavatā'smākaṃ prasādo darśitaścirāt ,
darśanāmṛtasekena yatsiktāḥ saddrumā vayam 10
10. bhūśuṇḍaḥ uvāca aho bhagavatā asmākam prasādaḥ darśitaḥ
cirāt yat siktāḥ saddrumāḥ vayam darśanāmṛtasekena
10. bhūśuṇḍaḥ uvāca aho,
bhagavatā asmākam prasādaḥ cirāt darśitaḥ yat vayam darśanāmṛtasekena siktāḥ saddrumāḥ
10. Bhusunda spoke: "Oh, it is wonderful! After such a long time, your revered self has shown us great favor (prasāda), for we, who are like excellent trees, have been watered by the sprinkling of the nectar of your vision."
मत्पुण्यचिरसंभारप्रेरितेन त्वयाधुना ।
मुने मान्यैकमान्येन कुतश्चागमनं कृतम् ॥ ११ ॥
matpuṇyacirasaṃbhārapreritena tvayādhunā ,
mune mānyaikamānyena kutaścāgamanaṃ kṛtam 11
11. matpuṇyacirasaṃbhārapreriteṇa tvayā adhunā
mune mānyaikamānyena kutaḥ ca āgamanam kṛtam
11. mune,
matpuṇyacirasaṃbhārapreriteṇa mānyaikamānyena tvayā adhunā ca kutaḥ āgamanam kṛtam?
11. O revered sage, by you, who are uniquely worthy of honor and who have been prompted by my long-accumulated spiritual merit, from where have you made your arrival now?
कच्चिदस्मिन्महामोहे चिरं विहरतस्तव ।
अखण्डितैव समता स्थिता चेतसि पावने ॥ १२ ॥
kaccidasminmahāmohe ciraṃ viharatastava ,
akhaṇḍitaiva samatā sthitā cetasi pāvane 12
12. kaccit asmin mahāmohe ciram viharataḥ tava
akhaṇḍitā eva samatā sthitā cetasi pāvane
12. kaccit ciram asmin mahāmohe viharataḥ tava
akhaṇḍitā eva samatā pāvane cetasi sthitā?
12. I trust that in this immense illusion (māyā), while you have been abiding for a long time, your unblemished serenity (samatā) has indeed remained steadfast in your pure mind.
किमर्थमद्यागमनक्लेशेनात्मा कदर्थितः ।
वचनश्रवणोत्कानामाज्ञां नो वक्तुमर्हसि ॥ १३ ॥
kimarthamadyāgamanakleśenātmā kadarthitaḥ ,
vacanaśravaṇotkānāmājñāṃ no vaktumarhasi 13
13. kim artham adya āgamana-kleśena ātmā kadarthitaḥ
vacana-śravaṇautkānām ājñām na vaktum arhasi
13. adya kim artham āgamana-kleśena ātmā kadarthitaḥ
vacana-śravaṇautkānām ājñām na vaktum arhasi
13. Why have you troubled your own self (ātman) with the effort of coming here today? You should not give instructions to us, who are eager to hear your words.
त्वत्पाददर्शनादेव सर्वं ज्ञातं मया मुने ।
त्वदागमनपुण्येन वयमायोजितास्त्वया ॥ १४ ॥
tvatpādadarśanādeva sarvaṃ jñātaṃ mayā mune ,
tvadāgamanapuṇyena vayamāyojitāstvayā 14
14. tvat-pāda-darśanāt eva sarvam jñātam mayā mune
tvat-āgamana-puṇyena vayam āyojitāḥ tvayā
14. mune tvat-pāda-darśanāt eva sarvam mayā jñātam
tvat-āgamana-puṇyena vayam tvayā āyojitāḥ
14. O sage, simply by seeing your feet, everything has become known to me. Through the auspicious merit (puṇya) of your arrival, we have been connected with you.
चिरंजीवितचर्चाभिर्वयं वः स्मृतिमागताः ।
तेनेदमास्पदं पादैस्त्वं पवित्रितवानयम् ॥ १५ ॥
ciraṃjīvitacarcābhirvayaṃ vaḥ smṛtimāgatāḥ ,
tenedamāspadaṃ pādaistvaṃ pavitritavānayam 15
15. cirañjīvita-carcābhiḥ vayam vaḥ smṛtim āgatāḥ
tena idam āspadam pādaiḥ tvam pavitritavān ayam
15. cirañjīvita-carcābhiḥ vayam vaḥ smṛtim āgatāḥ
tena tvam pādaiḥ idam āspadam pavitritavān ayam
15. Through discussions about long-lived beings, we remembered you. For this reason, you have purified this abode with your feet.
ज्ञातत्वदागमोऽप्येवं त्वां पृच्छामीह यन्मुने ।
भवद्वाक्यामृतास्वादवाञ्छितं प्रविजृम्भते ॥ १६ ॥
jñātatvadāgamo'pyevaṃ tvāṃ pṛcchāmīha yanmune ,
bhavadvākyāmṛtāsvādavāñchitaṃ pravijṛmbhate 16
16. jñāta-tvat-āgamaḥ api evam tvām pṛcchāmi iha yat mune
bhavat-vākya-amṛta-āsvāda-vāñchitam pravijṛmbhate
16. mune jñāta-tvat-āgamaḥ api evam iha tvām yat pṛcchāmi
bhavat-vākya-amṛta-āsvāda-vāñchitam pravijṛmbhate
16. O sage, even though your arrival is known, I ask you this now because the desire for the taste of the nectar of your words (vākya) is intensifying.
इत्युक्तवानसौ पक्षी भुशुण्डश्चिरजीवितः ।
त्रिकालामलसंवेदी तत्र प्रोक्तमिदं मया ॥ १७ ॥
ityuktavānasau pakṣī bhuśuṇḍaścirajīvitaḥ ,
trikālāmalasaṃvedī tatra proktamidaṃ mayā 17
17. iti uktavān asau pakṣī bhuśuṇḍaḥ cirajīvitaḥ
trikālāmalasaṃvedī tatra proktam idam mayā
17. iti asau cirajīvitaḥ trikālāmalasaṃvedī pakṣī
bhuśuṇḍaḥ uktavān tatra idam mayā proktam
17. Thus spoke that bird, the long-lived (cirajīvita) Bhūśuṇḍa, who knew the three times (past, present, and future) flawlessly. There, this was spoken by me.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
विहंगम महाराज सत्यमेतत्त्वयोच्यते ।
द्रष्टुमभ्यागतोऽस्म्यद्य त्वामेव चिरजीवितम् ॥ १८ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
vihaṃgama mahārāja satyametattvayocyate ,
draṣṭumabhyāgato'smyadya tvāmeva cirajīvitam 18
18. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca | vihaṅgama mahārāja satyam etat tvayā
ucyate | draṣṭum abhyāgataḥ asmi adya tvām eva cirajīvitam
18. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca vihaṅgama mahārāja etat satyam tvayā
ucyate adya tvām eva cirajīvitam draṣṭum asmi abhyāgataḥ
18. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: 'O bird, great king, this truth is indeed spoken by you. I have come here today specifically to see you, the long-lived (cirajīvita) one.'
आशीतलान्तःकरणो दिष्ट्या कुशलवानसि ।
पतितोऽसि न बुद्धात्मा भीषणां भववागुराम् ॥ १९ ॥
āśītalāntaḥkaraṇo diṣṭyā kuśalavānasi ,
patito'si na buddhātmā bhīṣaṇāṃ bhavavāgurām 19
19. āśītalāntaḥkaraṇaḥ diṣṭyā kuśalavān asi |
patitaḥ asi na buddha ātmā bhīṣaṇām bhavavāgurām
19. diṣṭyā āśītalāntaḥkaraṇaḥ asi kuśalavān na
buddhaḥ ātmā bhīṣaṇām bhavavāgurām patitaḥ asi
19. By good fortune, your inner self (antaḥkaraṇa) is utterly calm, and you are well. Your enlightened (buddha) self (ātman) has not fallen into the terrifying trap of worldly existence (bhava-vāgurā).
तदेतं संशयं छिन्धि भगवन्मम सत्यतः ।
कस्मिन्कुले भवाञ्जातो ज्ञातज्ञेयः कथं भवान् ॥ २० ॥
tadetaṃ saṃśayaṃ chindhi bhagavanmama satyataḥ ,
kasminkule bhavāñjāto jñātajñeyaḥ kathaṃ bhavān 20
20. tat etam saṃśayam chindhi bhagavan mama satyataḥ |
kasmin kule bhavān jātaḥ jñātajñeyaḥ katham bhavān
20. tat bhagavan mama etam saṃśayam satyataḥ chindhi
kasmin kule bhavān jātaḥ katham bhavān jñātajñeyaḥ
20. Therefore, O venerable one (bhagavan), truly dispel this doubt of mine. In which lineage were you born? How did you come to know all that is to be known?
कियदायुश्च ते साधो वृत्तं स्मरसि किंच वा ।
केनायं वा निवासस्ते निर्दिष्टो दीर्घदर्शिनः ॥ २१ ॥
kiyadāyuśca te sādho vṛttaṃ smarasi kiṃca vā ,
kenāyaṃ vā nivāsaste nirdiṣṭo dīrghadarśinaḥ 21
21. kiyat āyuḥ ca te sādho vṛttam smarasi kim ca vā |
kena ayam vā nivāsaḥ te nirdiṣṭaḥ dīrghadarśinaḥ
21. sādho dīrghadarśinaḥ te āyuḥ kiyat ca vṛttam
kim vā smarasi vā ayam nivāsaḥ kena te nirdiṣṭaḥ
21. O sage, how long is your life, and what events do you recall from it? And by whom was this abode designated for you, O far-sighted one?
भुशुण्ड उवाच ।
यत्पृच्छसि मुने सर्वं तदिदं वर्णयाम्यहम् ।
अनुद्वेगितया यत्नात्कथा श्राव्या महात्मना ॥ २२ ॥
bhuśuṇḍa uvāca ,
yatpṛcchasi mune sarvaṃ tadidaṃ varṇayāmyaham ,
anudvegitayā yatnātkathā śrāvyā mahātmanā 22
22. bhūśuṇḍaḥ uvāca | yat pṛcchasi mune sarvam tat idam
varṇayāmi aham | anudvegitayā yatnāt kathā śrāvyā mahātmanā
22. bhūśuṇḍaḥ uvāca mune yat sarvam pṛcchasi,
tat idam aham varṇayāmi kathā anudvegitayā yatnāt mahātmanā śrāvyā
22. Bhūśuṇḍa said: 'O sage (muni), I shall describe all that you ask. This narrative should be listened to by the magnanimous one (mahātman) with calm and diligent attention.'
युष्मद्विधास्त्रिभुवनप्रभुपूज्यरूपा आकर्णयन्ति यमुदारधियो महान्तः ।
तेनाशुभं प्रकथितेन विनाशमेति मेघास्पदेन विभवेन यथार्कतापः ॥ २३ ॥
yuṣmadvidhāstribhuvanaprabhupūjyarūpā ākarṇayanti yamudāradhiyo mahāntaḥ ,
tenāśubhaṃ prakathitena vināśameti meghāspadena vibhavena yathārkatāpaḥ 23
23. yuṣmat vidhāḥ tribhuvana prabhu pūjya
rūpāḥ ākarṇayanti yam udāra dhiyaḥ mahāntaḥ
| tena aśubham prakathitena vināśam eti
megha āspadena vibhaven yathā arka tāpaḥ
23. yuṣmadvidhāḥ tribhuvana-prabhu-pūjya-rūpāḥ udāra-dhiyaḥ mahāntaḥ yam ākarṇayanti tena prakathitena aśubham vināśam eti,
yathā meghāspadena vibhaven arka-tāpaḥ
23. Great and noble-minded ones, such as yourself (yuṣmadvidhāḥ), whose forms are revered by the lords of the three worlds, listen intently to this (story). By its narration (prakathitena), misfortune (aśubham) is dispelled, just as the heat of the sun (arkatāpaḥ) is extinguished by the power residing in the clouds (meghāspadena vibhaven).
