शिखिध्वज उवाच ।
एवं स्थिते महाभाग कथमुद्वेगमीदृशम् ।
लब्धवानसि देवोऽपि वद वेद्यविदां वर ॥ १ ॥
śikhidhvaja uvāca ,
evaṃ sthite mahābhāga kathamudvegamīdṛśam ,
labdhavānasi devo'pi vada vedyavidāṃ vara 1
1. śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca evam sthite mahābhāga katham udvegam
īdṛśam labdhavān asi devaḥ api vada vedyavidām vara
1. mahābhāga vedyavidām vara evam sthite devaḥ
api katham īdṛśam udvegam labdhavān asi vada
1. Śikhidhvaja said: O noble one, this being the situation, how is it that even you, an exalted being, have experienced such agitation? O best among those who know what is to be known, please tell me.
कुम्भ उवाच ।
श्रृणु कार्यमिदं चित्तं मदीयं वसुधाधिप ।
कथयामि तवाशेषं सर्गे यद्वृत्तमद्य मे ॥ २ ॥
kumbha uvāca ,
śrṛṇu kāryamidaṃ cittaṃ madīyaṃ vasudhādhipa ,
kathayāmi tavāśeṣaṃ sarge yadvṛttamadya me 2
2. kumbhaḥ uvāca śṛṇu kāryam idam cittam madīyam vasudhādhipa
kathayāmi tava aśeṣam sarge yat vṛttam adya me
2. vasudhādhipa śṛṇu idam madīyam cittam kāryam
tava sarge yat vṛttam adya me aśeṣam kathayāmi
2. Kumbha said: O ruler of the earth, listen to this story of my mind. I shall tell you completely what happened to me today in this cycle of existence (saṃsāra).
सुहृद्यावेदितं दुःखं परमायाति तानवम् ।
घनं जडं कृष्णमपि मुक्तवृष्टिरिवाम्बुदः ॥ ३ ॥
suhṛdyāveditaṃ duḥkhaṃ paramāyāti tānavam ,
ghanaṃ jaḍaṃ kṛṣṇamapi muktavṛṣṭirivāmbudaḥ 3
3. suhṛdi āveditam duḥkham param āyāti tānavam
ghanam jaḍam kṛṣṇam api muktavṛṣṭiḥ iva ambudaḥ
3. suhṛdi āveditam duḥkham param tānavam āyāti
ghanam jaḍam kṛṣṇam api muktavṛṣṭiḥ ambudaḥ iva
3. Sorrow, when confided in a friend, attains great alleviation, just like a dense, heavy, and dark cloud becomes light after it has shed its rain.
सुहृदा पृच्छता साधु चेतो याति प्रसन्नताम् ।
स्वच्छतोपगतेनाशु कतकेन जलं यथा ॥ ४ ॥
suhṛdā pṛcchatā sādhu ceto yāti prasannatām ,
svacchatopagatenāśu katakena jalaṃ yathā 4
4. suhṛdā pṛcchatā sādhu cetaḥ yāti prasannatām
svacchatopagatena āśu katakena jalam yathā
4. yathā jalam katakena svacchatopagatena āśu
suhṛdā sādhu pṛcchatā cetaḥ prasannatām yāti
4. Just as water quickly becomes clear when purified by a kataka nut, so too the mind attains tranquility when kindly questioned by a friend.
अहं तावदितो यातो भवते पुष्पमञ्जरीम् ।
दत्त्वा गगनमुल्लङ्घ्य संप्राप्तश्च त्रिविष्टपम् ॥ ५ ॥
ahaṃ tāvadito yāto bhavate puṣpamañjarīm ,
dattvā gaganamullaṅghya saṃprāptaśca triviṣṭapam 5
5. aham tāvat itaḥ yātaḥ bhavate puṣpamañjarīm dattvā
gaganām ullaṅghya samprāptaḥ ca triviṣṭapam
5. aham bhavate puṣpamañjarīm dattvā tāvat itaḥ
yātaḥ ca gaganām ullaṅghya triviṣṭapam samprāptaḥ
5. First, having given you a flower bouquet, I departed from here; then, having soared across the sky, I reached heaven (Triviṣṭapa).
ततः पित्रा महेन्द्रस्य सभास्थाने यथाक्रमम् ।
स्थित्वोत्थाय तथोत्थानकाले पित्रा विवर्जितः ॥ ६ ॥
tataḥ pitrā mahendrasya sabhāsthāne yathākramam ,
sthitvotthāya tathotthānakāle pitrā vivarjitaḥ 6
6. tataḥ pitrā mahendrasya sabhāsthāne yathākramam
sthitvā utthāya tathā utthānakāle pitrā vivarjitaḥ
6. tataḥ mahendrasya sabhāsthāne yathākramam sthitvā
utthāya tathā utthānakāle pitrā vivarjitaḥ
6. Then, in the assembly hall of Mahendra, having appropriately taken my seat and then risen, I was likewise dismissed by my father (Indra) at the moment of rising.
इहागन्तुमहं त्यक्त्वा स्वर्गं संप्राप्तवान्नभः ।
दिवाकरहयैः सार्धं वहाम्यनिलवर्त्मनि ॥ ७ ॥
ihāgantumahaṃ tyaktvā svargaṃ saṃprāptavānnabhaḥ ,
divākarahayaiḥ sārdhaṃ vahāmyanilavartmani 7
7. iha āgantum aham tyaktvā svargam samprāptavān
nabhaḥ divākarahayaiḥ sārdham vahāmi anilavartmani
7. aham iha āgantum svargam tyaktvā nabhaḥ samprāptavān
divākarahayaiḥ sārdham anilavartmani vahāmi
7. Having left heaven to come here, I reached the sky. There, I travel along with the sun's horses in the path of the wind.
अथैकत्र गतो भानुरेकेनान्येन वर्त्मना ।
आगच्छाम्यहमाकाशं सागरापतिताकृतिः ॥ ८ ॥
athaikatra gato bhānurekenānyena vartmanā ,
āgacchāmyahamākāśaṃ sāgarāpatitākṛtiḥ 8
8. atha ekatra gataḥ bhānuḥ ekena anyena vartmanā
āgacchāmi aham ākāśam sāgarāpatitākṛtiḥ
8. atha bhānuḥ ekatra gataḥ ekena anyena vartmanā
aham ākāśam sāgarāpatitākṛtiḥ āgacchāmi
8. Then, after the sun had departed, following various paths, I myself ascended into the sky, my appearance like something that had plunged into the ocean.
अथाग्रे वारिपूर्णानां मेघानां मध्यवर्त्मना ।
अपश्यं मुनिमायान्तमहं दुर्वाससं जवात् ॥ ९ ॥
athāgre vāripūrṇānāṃ meghānāṃ madhyavartmanā ,
apaśyaṃ munimāyāntamahaṃ durvāsasaṃ javāt 9
9. atha agre vāri pūrṇānām meghānām madhya vartmanā
apaśyam munim āyāntam aham durvāsasam javāt
9. atha aham agre vāri pūrṇānām meghānām madhya
vartmanā javāt āyāntam durvāsasam munim apaśyam
9. Then, ahead, I quickly saw the sage Durvāsas (Durvāsas) approaching through the path amidst the water-filled clouds.
पयोधरपटच्छन्नं विद्युद्वलयभूऽषितम् ।
अभिसारिकया तुल्यं धाराधौताङ्गचन्दनम् ॥ १० ॥
payodharapaṭacchannaṃ vidyudvalayabhū'ṣitam ,
abhisārikayā tulyaṃ dhārādhautāṅgacandanam 10
10. payodhara paṭa channam vidyut valaya bhūṣitam
abhisārikayā tulyam dhārā dhauta anga candanam
10. (saḥ Durvāsāḥ) payodhara paṭa channam,
vidyut valaya bhūṣitam,
abhisārikayā tulyam,
dhārā dhauta anga candanam (āsīt)
10. He was enveloped as if by a garment of clouds, adorned with a circle of lightning, resembling a woman (abhisārikā) going to meet her lover, her body's sandalwood paste washed away by the rain.
स्थितां सुतरुसुच्छायामापगां वसुधातले ।
वेगेनाभिसरन्तं तां तपोलक्ष्मीमिव प्रियाम् ॥ ११ ॥
sthitāṃ sutarusucchāyāmāpagāṃ vasudhātale ,
vegenābhisarantaṃ tāṃ tapolakṣmīmiva priyām 11
11. sthitām su taru su chāyām āpagām vasudhātale
vegena abhisarantam tām tapas lakṣmīm iva priyām
11. (saḥ Durvāsāḥ) vegena tām āpagām
(yā) vasudhātale sthitām su
taru su chāyām (āsīt) priyām tapas
lakṣmīm iva abhisarantam (āsīt)
11. He was swiftly approaching that river, which was situated on the earth's surface and offered the beautiful shade of fine trees, as if it were a beloved manifestation of the glory of (tapas) asceticism.
तस्य कृत्वा नमस्कारमुक्तं खे वहता मया ।
मुने नीलाभ्रवस्त्रस्त्वमभिसारिकया समः ॥ १२ ॥
tasya kṛtvā namaskāramuktaṃ khe vahatā mayā ,
mune nīlābhravastrastvamabhisārikayā samaḥ 12
12. tasya kṛtvā namaskāram uktam khe vahatā mayā
mune nīlābhravastraḥ tvam abhisārikayā samaḥ
12. tasya namaskāram kṛtvā mayā khe vahata uktam
mune tvam nīlābhravastraḥ abhisārikayā samaḥ
12. After bowing to him, I, while flying in the sky, said: "O sage, you, clad in blue clouds, resemble a woman secretly going to meet her lover."
इत्याकर्ण्य मुमोचासौ मयि मानद शापकम् ।
स्तनकेशवती कान्ता हावभावविलासिनी ॥ १३ ॥
ityākarṇya mumocāsau mayi mānada śāpakam ,
stanakeśavatī kāntā hāvabhāvavilāsinī 13
13. iti ākarṇya mumoca asau mayi mānada śāpakam
stanakeśavatī kāntā hāvabhāvavilāsinī
13. iti ākarṇya mānada asau mayi śāpakam mumoca
stanakeśavatī kāntā hāvabhāvavilāsinī
13. O giver of honor (mānada), upon hearing this, he unleashed a curse upon me: "You shall become a beautiful woman (kāntā) with breasts and abundant hair, full of graceful expressions and alluring charm."
गच्छानेन दुरुक्तेन रात्रौ योषा भविष्यसि ।
इति श्रुत्वाऽशुभं वाक्यमुत्थितं जर्जरद्विजात् ॥ १४ ॥
gacchānena duruktena rātrau yoṣā bhaviṣyasi ,
iti śrutvā'śubhaṃ vākyamutthitaṃ jarjaradvijāt 14
14. gaccha anena duruktena rātrau yoṣā bhaviṣyasi
iti śrutvā aśubham vākyam utthitam jarjaradvijāt
14. anena duruktena rātrau yoṣā bhaviṣyasi gaccha
iti jarjaradvijāt utthitam aśubham vākyam śrutvā
14. "Go! Because of this harsh speech, you shall become a woman at night." Hearing this inauspicious statement, which had emanated from the frail twice-born (dvija), I...
विमृशामि मनाग्यावत्तावदन्तर्हितो मुनिः ।
इत्युद्वेगमनाः साधो संप्राप्तोऽहं नभस्तलात् ॥ १५ ॥
vimṛśāmi manāgyāvattāvadantarhito muniḥ ,
ityudvegamanāḥ sādho saṃprāpto'haṃ nabhastalāt 15
15. vimṛśāmi manāk yāvat tāvat antarhitaḥ muniḥ iti
udvegamanāḥ sādho samprāptaḥ aham nabhastalāt
15. yāvat aham manāk vimṛśāmi tāvat muniḥ antarhitaḥ
iti sādho udvegamanāḥ aham nabhastalāt samprāptaḥ
15. While I was just beginning to ponder, the sage vanished. Thus, O virtuous one (sādho), with a greatly agitated mind, I have arrived here from the sky.
एतत्ते कथितं सर्वं संपन्नोऽस्मि निशाङ्गना ।
अतिवाह्यं दिनान्तेषु स्त्रीत्वमेतन्मया कथम् ॥ १६ ॥
etatte kathitaṃ sarvaṃ saṃpanno'smi niśāṅganā ,
ativāhyaṃ dinānteṣu strītvametanmayā katham 16
16. etat te kathitam sarvam sampannaḥ asmi niśāṅganā
ativāhyam dinānteṣu strītvam etat mayā katham
16. niśāṅganā,
te etat sarvam kathitam.
aham sampannaḥ asmi.
mayā etat strītvam dinānteṣu katham ativāhyam?
16. O lady of the night, all this has been recounted to you. I have become a woman. How am I to endure this state of womanhood (strītvam) at the close of days?
योषित्स्तनवती रात्रौ वक्तव्यं किं मया पितुः ।
संसृतौ भवितव्यानामहो नु विषमा गतिः ॥ १७ ॥
yoṣitstanavatī rātrau vaktavyaṃ kiṃ mayā pituḥ ,
saṃsṛtau bhavitavyānāmaho nu viṣamā gatiḥ 17
17. yoṣit stanavatī rātrau vaktavyam kim mayā pituḥ
saṃsṛtau bhavitavyānām aho nu viṣamā gatiḥ
17. mayā yoṣit stanavatī rātrau pituḥ kim vaktavyam?
aho nu saṃsṛtau bhavitavyānām gatiḥ viṣamā!
17. What can I, a woman now endowed with breasts, say to my father at night? Alas, how difficult (viṣamā) is the course (gatiḥ) of those destined to undergo experiences within this cycle of transmigration (saṃsāra)!
अहमप्यद्य यद्दैवाद्यूनामामिषतां गतः ।
कष्टं मदपहारेण कलहो जायतेऽधुना ॥ १८ ॥
ahamapyadya yaddaivādyūnāmāmiṣatāṃ gataḥ ,
kaṣṭaṃ madapahāreṇa kalaho jāyate'dhunā 18
18. aham api adya yat daivāt yūnām āmiṣatām gataḥ
kaṣṭam madapahāreṇa kalahaḥ jāyate adhunā
18. yat aham api adya daivāt yūnām āmiṣatām gataḥ.
kaṣṭam! adhunā madapahāreṇa kalahaḥ jāyate.
18. I, too, today, by divine destiny, have become an object of desire for young men. Alas! Now, a quarrel arises due to my abduction.
दिवि देवकुमाराणां कामाकुलधियामिह ।
गुरुदेवद्विजातीनां लज्जापरवशात्मना ॥ १९ ॥
divi devakumārāṇāṃ kāmākuladhiyāmiha ,
gurudevadvijātīnāṃ lajjāparavaśātmanā 19
19. divi devakumārāṇām kāmākuladhiyām iha
gurudevadvijātīnām lajjāparavaśātmanām
19. divi kāmākuladhiyām devakumārāṇām.
iha lajjāparavaśātmanām gurudevadvijātīnām.
19. In heaven, of the divine princes whose minds are agitated by desire; and here, of the spiritual preceptors (guru), gods, and twice-born (dvijāti), whose inner selves (ātman) are overwhelmed by shame.
कथमग्रे मया सम्यग्वस्तव्यं यामिनीस्त्रिया ।
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा क्षणमेकं सा तूष्णीं स्थित्वा मुनिस्थितौ ॥ २० ॥
kathamagre mayā samyagvastavyaṃ yāminīstriyā ,
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
ityuktvā kṣaṇamekaṃ sā tūṣṇīṃ sthitvā munisthitau 20
20. katham agre mayā samyak vastavyam
yāminī-striyā | śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ
uvāca | iti uktvā kṣaṇam ekam
sā tūṣṇīm sthitvā muni-sthitau
20. katham agre mayā yāminī-striyā samyak vastavyam śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ
uvāca iti uktvā sā kṣaṇam ekam tūṣṇīm sthitvā muni-sthitau
20. How should I, a woman named Yaminī, properly conduct myself from now on? Sri Vasishtha said: Having spoken thus, she remained silent for a moment, abiding in a sage-like state.
धैर्यमाश्रित्य कुम्भोऽत्र पुनराह रघूद्वह ।
किमज्ञ इव शोचामि किं मम क्षतमात्मनः ॥ २१ ॥
dhairyamāśritya kumbho'tra punarāha raghūdvaha ,
kimajña iva śocāmi kiṃ mama kṣatamātmanaḥ 21
21. dhairyam āśritya kumbhaḥ atra punaḥ āha raghūdvaha
| kim ajñaḥ iva śocāmi kim mama kṣatam ātmanaḥ
21. raghūdvaha ! dhairyam āśritya kumbhaḥ atra punaḥ
āha kim ajñaḥ iva śocāmi ? mama ātmanaḥ kim kṣatam ?
21. O descendant of Raghu, embracing fortitude, Kumbha then again spoke: "Why do I lament like an ignorant person? What harm can come to my self (ātman)?"
यथागतमयं देहो मत्तोऽन्योऽनुभविष्यति ।
शिखिध्वज उवाच ।
परिदेवनया कोऽर्थो देवपुत्र तथैतया ॥ २२ ॥
yathāgatamayaṃ deho matto'nyo'nubhaviṣyati ,
śikhidhvaja uvāca ,
paridevanayā ko'rtho devaputra tathaitayā 22
22. yathā-āgatam ayam dehaḥ mattaḥ anyaḥ anubhavaiṣyati | śikhidhvajaḥ
uvāca | paridevanayā kaḥ arthaḥ devaputra tathā etayā
22. ayam dehaḥ yathā-āgatam (astīti),
mattaḥ anyaḥ anubhavaiṣyati śikhidhvajaḥ uvāca devaputra,
etayā tathā paridevanayā kaḥ arthaḥ ?
22. This body, having come into being, another [being] will experience it, distinct from me. Shikhidhvaja said: "O son of a deity, what purpose is served by such lamentation?"
यदायाति तदायातु देहस्यात्मा न लिप्यते ।
कानिचिद्यानि दुःखानि सुखानि विहितानि च ॥ २३ ॥
yadāyāti tadāyātu dehasyātmā na lipyate ,
kānicidyāni duḥkhāni sukhāni vihitāni ca 23
23. yadā āyāti tadā āyātu dehasya ātmā na lipyate
| kāni cit yāni duḥkhāni sukhāni vihitāni ca
23. yadā (tat) āyāti tadā (tat) āyātu dehasya ātmā na lipyate yāni kāni cit duḥkhāni sukhāni ca vihitāni (santi),
(tāni āyātu)
23. When it comes, let it come; the self (ātman) is not affected by the body. Whatever sorrows and joys are ordained, let them come.
तानि सर्वाणि देहस्य देहिनो न तु कानिचित् ।
यदि त्वमपि कार्याणामखेदार्होऽपि खिद्यसे ॥ २४ ॥
tāni sarvāṇi dehasya dehino na tu kānicit ,
yadi tvamapi kāryāṇāmakhedārho'pi khidyase 24
24. tāni sarvāṇi dehasya dehinaḥ na tu kānicit
yadi tvam api kāryāṇām akhedārhaḥ api khidyase
24. tāni sarvāṇi dehasya dehinaḥ tu na kānicit
yadi tvam api akhedārhaḥ api kāryāṇām khidyase
24. All these [experiences] belong to the body, but not at all to the embodied being (ātman). If you, though not deserving of distress regarding your duties (karma), are nevertheless grieving...
तदन्येषामुपायः स्यात्क इवागमभूषणः ।
खेदे खेदोचितं वाच्यमिति किंचित्त्वमुक्तवान् ॥ २५ ॥
tadanyeṣāmupāyaḥ syātka ivāgamabhūṣaṇaḥ ,
khede khedocitaṃ vācyamiti kiṃcittvamuktavān 25
25. tat anyeṣām upāyaḥ syāt kaḥ iva āgamabhūṣaṇaḥ
khede khedocitam vācyam iti kiñcit tvam uktavān
25. tat anyeṣām upāyaḥ kaḥ iva āgamabhūṣaṇaḥ syāt
khede tvam khedocitam kiñcit vācyam iti uktavān
25. If you, who are adorned with scriptural knowledge (āgama), are experiencing distress, then what recourse (upāya) would there be for others? You have, after all, uttered words that are fitting for a distressed state.
इदानीं समतामेत्य तिष्ठाखिन्नो यथास्थितम् ।
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
तावेवमादिभिर्वाक्यैरन्योन्याश्वासनं स्वयम् ॥ २६ ॥
idānīṃ samatāmetya tiṣṭhākhinno yathāsthitam ,
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
tāvevamādibhirvākyairanyonyāśvāsanaṃ svayam 26
26. idānīm samatām etya tiṣṭha akhinnaḥ yathāsthitam śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ
uvāca tau evamādibhiḥ vākyaiḥ anyonyāśvāsanam svayam
26. idānīm samatām etya akhinnaḥ yathāsthitam tiṣṭha śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ
uvāca tau svayam evamādibhiḥ vākyaiḥ anyonyāśvāsanam
26. Now, having attained equanimity, remain untroubled, in your natural state. Shri Vasiṣṭha said: Those two, [Rama and Lakṣmaṇa], then themselves offered mutual consolation with these and other similar words.
कृत्वा स्थितौ वनस्निग्धौ सुहृदौ खेदिनौ मिथः ।
अथार्कोऽप्यस्य कुम्भस्य स्त्रीत्वमुत्पादयन्निव ॥ २७ ॥
kṛtvā sthitau vanasnigdhau suhṛdau khedinau mithaḥ ,
athārko'pyasya kumbhasya strītvamutpādayanniva 27
27. kṛtvā sthitau vanasnigdhau suhṛdau khedinau mithaḥ
atha arkaḥ api asya kumbhasya strītvam utpādayan iva
27. vanasnigdhau suhṛdau khedinau mithaḥ kṛtvā sthitau
atha arkaḥ api asya kumbhasya strītvam utpādayan iva
27. Having thus consoled each other, those two forest-loving, distressed friends remained [there]. Then, the sun, as if creating the femininity of this pitcher (kumbha)...
जगामास्तं जगद्दीपो दीपः स्नेहक्षयादिव ।
व्यवहारभरैः सार्धं पद्माः संकोचमाययुः ॥ २८ ॥
jagāmāstaṃ jagaddīpo dīpaḥ snehakṣayādiva ,
vyavahārabharaiḥ sārdhaṃ padmāḥ saṃkocamāyayuḥ 28
28. jagāma astam jagat dīpaḥ dīpaḥ sneha kṣayāt iva
vyavahāra bharaiḥ sārdham padmāḥ saṃkocam āyayuḥ
28. jagat dīpaḥ sneha kṣayāt dīpaḥ iva astam jagāma
vyavahāra bharaiḥ sārdham padmāḥ saṃkocam āyayuḥ
28. The sun, the lamp of the world, set as if it were a lamp whose oil (or vitality) had been depleted. Along with the cessation of daily affairs, the lotuses also closed.
मार्गाश्च पथिकैः सार्धं पान्थस्त्रीहृदयानि च ।
दाशवद्विहगान्सर्वान्कुर्वदेकत्र संचितान् ॥ २९ ॥
mārgāśca pathikaiḥ sārdhaṃ pānthastrīhṛdayāni ca ,
dāśavadvihagānsarvānkurvadekatra saṃcitān 29
29. mārgāḥ ca pathikaiḥ sārdham pāntha strī hṛdayāni
ca dāśavat vihagān sarvān kurvat ekatra saṃcitān
29. mārgāḥ ca pathikaiḥ sārdham pāntha strī hṛdayāni ca [implied
agent] dāśavat sarvān vihagān ekatra saṃcitān kurvat
29. The roads, along with their travelers, and the hearts of travelers' wives (also underwent a change, becoming deserted or anxious). (The approaching evening or an implicit agent) made all the birds gathered in one place, like a fisherman (gathers his catch).
तारकारत्नजालाढ्यं भुवने साम्यतां ययौ ।
खं हसदिव ताराढ्यं विकासिकुमुदाकरम् ॥ ३० ॥
tārakāratnajālāḍhyaṃ bhuvane sāmyatāṃ yayau ,
khaṃ hasadiva tārāḍhyaṃ vikāsikumudākaram 30
30. tārakā ratna jāla āḍhyam bhuvane sāmyatām yayau
kham hasat iva tārā āḍhyam vikāsi kumuda ākaram

30. The sky, adorned with a network of star-gems, attained a resemblance in the world, appearing like a star-filled, laughing expanse, (or more specifically,) like a lake filled with blooming water lilies.
ययावुन्नादचक्राह्वभ्रमद्भ्रमरपेटकम् ।
सुहृदौ तावथोत्थाय संध्यामुद्यन्निशाकराम् ॥ ३१ ॥

31. The evening progressed (to a state characterized by) a loud humming swarm of bees buzzing around the cakravāka birds. Then, those two friends, having risen, observed the twilight with the rising moon.
वन्दयित्वा तथा कृत्वा जप्यं गुल्मान्तरे स्थितौ ।
ततः कुम्भः शनैस्तत्र स्त्रैणमभ्याहरन्वपुः ॥ ३२ ॥
vandayitvā tathā kṛtvā japyaṃ gulmāntare sthitau ,
tataḥ kumbhaḥ śanaistatra straiṇamabhyāharanvapuḥ 32

tataḥ kumbhaḥ śanaiḥ tatra straiṇam abhyāharan vapuḥ

32. After bowing and performing the recitation, the two of them stood hidden within the thicket. Then, Kumbha slowly assumed a feminine body there.
शिखिध्वजं पुरःसंस्थं प्रोवाच गलदक्षरम् ।
पतामीव स्फुरामीव द्रवामीवाङ्गयष्टिभिः ॥ ३३ ॥
śikhidhvajaṃ puraḥsaṃsthaṃ provāca galadakṣaram ,
patāmīva sphurāmīva dravāmīvāṅgayaṣṭibhiḥ 33
33. śikhidhvajam puraḥsaṃstham provāca galadakṣaram
patāmi iva sphurāmi iva dravāmi iva aṅgayaṣṭibhiḥ
33. purahsaṃstham śikhidhvajam galadakṣaram provāca
patāmi iva sphurāmi iva aṅgayaṣṭibhiḥ dravāmi iva
33. With faltering words, she spoke to Śikhidhvaja, who was standing before her: 'I feel as if I am falling, as if I am trembling, and as if I am melting through my slender limbs.'
लज्जयैव च ते राजन्मन्ये स्त्रीत्वं व्रजाम्यहम् ।
पश्येमे परिवर्धन्ते राजन्मम शिरोरुहाः ॥ ३४ ॥
lajjayaiva ca te rājanmanye strītvaṃ vrajāmyaham ,
paśyeme parivardhante rājanmama śiroruhāḥ 34
34. lajjayā eva ca te rājan manye strītvaṃ vrajāmi
aham paśya ime parivardhante rājan mama śiroruhaḥ
34. rājan manye lajjayā eva ca te aham strītvaṃ vrajāmi

34. O King, I believe that due to modesty itself and your presence, I am attaining womanhood. Behold, O King, these hairs of mine are growing long on my head.
प्रस्फुरत्तारकामाला दिनान्ततिमिरा इव ।
पश्येमौ मम जायेते प्रोन्मुखावुरसि स्तनौ ॥ ३५ ॥
prasphurattārakāmālā dināntatimirā iva ,
paśyemau mama jāyete pronmukhāvurasi stanau 35

35. They are like a garland of sparkling stars, or like the darkness at day's end. Behold, these two breasts of mine are appearing, rising upwards on my chest.
कोरकाविव पद्मिन्या वसन्ते गगनोन्मुखौ ।
आगुल्फमेव लम्बानि संपद्यन्तेऽम्बराणि मे ॥ ३६ ॥

āgulphameva lambāni saṃpadyante'mbarāṇi me 36

36. Like two buds of a lotus in spring, reaching towards the sky, my garments become long, extending even to my ankles.
देहादेव सखे पश्य स्त्रिया इव शनैः शनैः ।
भूषणान्युत रत्नानि माल्यानि विविधानि च ॥ ३७ ॥
dehādeva sakhe paśya striyā iva śanaiḥ śanaiḥ ,
bhūṣaṇānyuta ratnāni mālyāni vividhāni ca 37
37. dehāt eva sakhe paśya striyāḥ iva śanaiḥ śanaiḥ
bhūṣaṇāni uta ratnāni mālyāni vividhāni ca
37. sakhe paśya dehāt eva striyāḥ iva śanaiḥ śanaiḥ
bhūṣaṇāni uta ratnāni vividhāni mālyāni ca
37. O friend, behold, from my very body, just as from a woman, gradually emerge ornaments, indeed, and various gems and garlands.
पश्येमान्यङ्ग जायन्ते स्वाङ्गेभ्यो वृक्षपुष्पवत् ।
पश्यायं स्वयमेवाद्य चन्द्रांशुकरशोभनः ॥ ३८ ॥
paśyemānyaṅga jāyante svāṅgebhyo vṛkṣapuṣpavat ,
paśyāyaṃ svayamevādya candrāṃśukaraśobhanaḥ 38
38. paśya imāni aṅga jāyante svāṅgebhyaḥ vṛkṣapuṣpavat
paśya ayam svayam eva adya candrāṃśukaraśobhanaḥ
38. aṅga paśya imāni svāṅgebhyaḥ vṛkṣapuṣpavat jāyante
paśya adya ayam svayam eva candrāṃśukaraśobhanaḥ
38. O my dear one, behold, these [ornaments] are born from my own limbs, just like flowers from a tree. See, today this very [body] shines like the rays of the moon.
मूर्ध्नि पट्टांशुको जातो नीहारोऽद्राविवाङ्ग मे ।
सर्वाणि कान्तालिङ्गानि जातानि मम मानद ॥ ३९ ॥
mūrdhni paṭṭāṃśuko jāto nīhāro'drāvivāṅga me ,
sarvāṇi kāntāliṅgāni jātāni mama mānada 39
39. mūrdhni paṭṭāṃśukaḥ jātaḥ nīhāraḥ adrau iva
aṅga me sarvāṇi kāntāliṅgāni jātāni mama mānada
39. mānada aṅga mūrdhni me paṭṭāṃśukaḥ adrau nīhāraḥ
iva jātaḥ mama sarvāṇi kāntāliṅgāni jātāni
39. O giver of honor, on my head, a silk garment has appeared, just like mist on a mountain, O dear one. All lovely characteristics have manifested for me.
हा धिक्कष्टं विषादो मे किं करोम्यङ्गनास्म्यहम् ।
हा धिक्कष्टमहो साधो स्थित एवाहमङ्गना ॥ ४० ॥
hā dhikkaṣṭaṃ viṣādo me kiṃ karomyaṅganāsmyaham ,
hā dhikkaṣṭamaho sādho sthita evāhamaṅganā 40
40. hā dhik kaṣṭam viṣādaḥ me kim karomi aṅganā asmi aham
hā dhik kaṣṭam aho sādho sthitaḥ eva aham aṅganā
40. hā dhik kaṣṭam me viṣādaḥ kim karomi aham aṅganā asmi
hā dhik kaṣṭam aho sādho aham eva aṅganā sthitaḥ
40. Oh, alas, what a misfortune, what despair is mine! What can I do? I am a woman. Oh, alas, what a misery! Oh, noble one, I am indeed (still) a woman.
संविदानुभवाम्यन्तर्नितम्बजघने त्विमे ।
विपिने कुम्भ इत्युक्त्वा तूष्णीं खिन्नो बभूव ह ॥ ४१ ॥
saṃvidānubhavāmyantarnitambajaghane tvime ,
vipine kumbha ityuktvā tūṣṇīṃ khinno babhūva ha 41
41. saṃvidā anubhavāmi antaḥ nitambajaghane tu ime
vipine kumbhaḥ iti uktvā tūṣṇīm khinnaḥ babhūva ha
41. saṃvidā antaḥ ime nitambajaghane tu anubhavāmi
vipine kumbhaḥ iti uktvā tūṣṇīm khinnaḥ babhūva ha
41. Within, I feel these two, my hips and buttocks. Having said, "This is like a pot in the forest," he became silent and dejected.
राजापि च तमालोक्य तथैवासीद्विषण्णधीः ।
मुहूर्तमात्रेणोवाच शिखिध्वज इदं वचः ॥ ४२ ॥
rājāpi ca tamālokya tathaivāsīdviṣaṇṇadhīḥ ,
muhūrtamātreṇovāca śikhidhvaja idaṃ vacaḥ 42
42. rājā api ca tam ālokya tathā eva āsīt viṣaṇṇadhīḥ
muhūrtamātreṇa uvāca śikhidhvajaḥ idam vacaḥ
42. rājā api ca tam ālokya tathā eva viṣaṇṇadhīḥ āsīt
muhūrtamātreṇa śikhidhvajaḥ idam vacaḥ uvāca
42. The king, upon seeing him, also became similarly dejected in intellect. After only a moment, Śikhidhvaja spoke these words.
कष्टं सोऽयं महासत्त्वः संपन्ना वरवर्णिनी ।
साधो विदितवेद्यस्त्वं जानासि नियतेर्गतिम् ॥ ४३ ॥
kaṣṭaṃ so'yaṃ mahāsattvaḥ saṃpannā varavarṇinī ,
sādho viditavedyastvaṃ jānāsi niyatergatim 43
43. kaṣṭam saḥ ayam mahāsattvaḥ saṃpannā varavarṇinī
sādho viditavedyaḥ tvam jānāsi niyateḥ gatim
43. kaṣṭam saḥ ayam mahāsattvaḥ varavarṇinī saṃpannā
sādho tvam viditavedyaḥ niyateḥ gatim jānāsi
43. Alas! This great being (sattva) has transformed into a beautiful woman. Oh noble one (sādhu), you are one who knows what is to be known, you understand the course of destiny.
अवश्यभाविन्यर्थेऽस्मिन्मा खिन्नहृदयो भव ।
आपतन्ति दशास्तास्ताः सुधियां देहमात्रके ॥ ४४ ॥
avaśyabhāvinyarthe'sminmā khinnahṛdayo bhava ,
āpatanti daśāstāstāḥ sudhiyāṃ dehamātrake 44
44. avaśyabhāvini arthe asmin mā khinnahṛdayaḥ bhava
āpatanti daśāḥ tāḥ tāḥ sudhiyām dehamātrake
44. asmin avaśyabhāvini arthe khinnahṛdayaḥ mā bhava
tāḥ tāḥ daśāḥ sudhiyām dehamātrake āpatanti
44. Do not be disheartened concerning this inevitable matter. For the wise, such various conditions merely affect the body.
न चेतस्यधियां त्वेताश्चित्तं यान्ति न देहकम् ।
कुम्भ उवाच ।
एवमस्त्वनुतिष्ठामि यामिनीस्त्रीत्वमात्मनः ॥ ४५ ॥
na cetasyadhiyāṃ tvetāścittaṃ yānti na dehakam ,
kumbha uvāca ,
evamastvanutiṣṭhāmi yāminīstrītvamātmanaḥ 45
45. na cetasi adhiyām tu etāḥ cittam yānti na dehakam kumbhaḥ
uvāca evam astu anutiṣṭhāmi yāminīstrītvaṃ ātmanaḥ
45. tu etāḥ adhiyām cetasi na yānti,
na cittam,
na dehakam kumbhaḥ uvāca evam astu ātmanaḥ yāminīstrītvaṃ anutiṣṭhāmi
45. But for the unwise, these (conditions) neither affect their mind nor their body. Kumba said: 'So be it. I shall assume this state of being a woman at night for my very self (ātman).'
एकतल्पे निशां तूष्णीं नीतवन्तौ चिरेण ताम् ।
अथ प्रभाते तत्स्त्रैणं वपुरुत्सृज्य यौवनम् ॥ ४७ ॥
ekatalpe niśāṃ tūṣṇīṃ nītavantau cireṇa tām ,
atha prabhāte tatstraiṇaṃ vapurutsṛjya yauvanam 47
47. ekatalpe niśām tūṣṇīm nītavantau cireṇa tām atha
prabhāte tat straiṇam vapuḥ utsṛjya yauvanam
47. tau cireṇa tām niśām ekatalpe tūṣṇīm nītavantau
atha prabhāte tat straiṇam yauvanam vapuḥ utsṛjya
47. The two of them spent that night silently on a single bed for a long time. Then, in the morning, having abandoned that youthful feminine form...
बभूव कुम्भः कुम्भाभः कुचप्रोज्झितमूर्तिमान् ।
इति सा राजमहिषी चूडाला वरवर्णिनी ॥ ४८ ॥
babhūva kumbhaḥ kumbhābhaḥ kucaprojjhitamūrtimān ,
iti sā rājamahiṣī cūḍālā varavarṇinī 48
48. babhūva kumbhaḥ kumbhābhaḥ kucaprojjhitamūrtimān
iti sā rājamahiṣī cūḍālā varavarṇinī
48. kumbhaḥ kumbhābhaḥ kucaprojjhitamūrtimān
babhūva iti sā rājamahiṣī cūḍālā varavarṇinī
48. Kumba became himself again, resembling a pot and having a form devoid of breasts. Thus (was) that royal queen, Chudala, the fair-complexioned one.
कुम्भत्वमास्थिता भर्तुः पश्चात्स्त्रीत्वमुपागता ।
विजहार वनान्तेषु कुमारीधर्मिणी निशि ।
कुम्भरूपधरा चाह्नि भर्त्रा मित्रेण संयुता ॥ ४९ ॥
kumbhatvamāsthitā bhartuḥ paścātstrītvamupāgatā ,
vijahāra vanānteṣu kumārīdharmiṇī niśi ,
kumbharūpadharā cāhni bhartrā mitreṇa saṃyutā 49
49. kumbhatvam āsthitā bhartuḥ paścāt
strītvam upāgatā | vijahāra vanānteṣu
kumārīdharmiṇī niśi | kumbharūpadharā
ca ahni bhartrā mitreṇa saṃyutā ||
49. bhartuḥ kumbhatvam āsthitā paścāt strītvam upāgatā.
niśi kumārīdharmiṇī vanānteṣu vijahāra.
ca ahni kumbharūpadharā mitreṇa bhartrā saṃyutā.
49. Initially, she adopted the form of a pot for her husband, and later she attained womanhood. Observing the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a maiden, she sported in the forest fringes at night. And in the daytime, assuming the form of a pot, she remained united with her husband, who was in the guise of a friend.
कैलासमन्दरमहेन्द्रसुमेरुसह्यसानुष्वविस्खलितयोगगमागमा सा ।
साकं प्रियेण सुहृदा भवता यथेच्छं स्रग्दामहारवलिता विजहार नारी ॥ ५० ॥
kailāsamandaramahendrasumerusahyasānuṣvaviskhalitayogagamāgamā sā ,
sākaṃ priyeṇa suhṛdā bhavatā yathecchaṃ sragdāmahāravalitā vijahāra nārī 50
50. kailāsa-mandara-mahendra-sumeru-sahya-sānuṣu
aviśkhalita-yoga-gamāgamā sā |
sākam priyeṇa suhṛdā bhavatā yatheccham
sragdāma-hāra-valitā vijahāra nārī ||
50. sā nārī kailāsa-mandara-mahendra-sumeru-sahya-sānuṣu aviśkhalita-yoga-gamāgamā,
priyeṇa suhṛdā bhavatā sākam sragdāma-hāra-valitā yatheccham vijahāra.
50. She, the woman, whose comings and goings through yoga (yoga) were unimpeded, sported on the peaks of Kailāsa, Mandara, Mahendra, Sumeru, and Sahya, together with you, her beloved friend, adorned with garlands of flowers and necklaces, as she wished.
