अत्र ते श्रृणु वक्ष्यामि वृत्तान्तमिममुत्तमम् ।
जागतीहेन्द्रजालश्रीश्चित्तायत्ता यथा स्थिता ॥ १ ॥

1. Sage Vasiṣṭha said: 'Listen, I shall now relate to you this excellent account (vṛttānta) of how the wondrous splendor of the world's magic (indrajāla) is completely dependent on the mind (citta).'
अस्त्यस्मिन्वसुधापीठे नानावनसमाकुलः ।
उत्तरापाण्डवो नाम स्फीतो जनपदो महान् ॥ २ ॥
astyasminvasudhāpīṭhe nānāvanasamākulaḥ ,
uttarāpāṇḍavo nāma sphīto janapado mahān 2
2. asti asmin vasudhā-pīṭhe nānā-vana-samākulaḥ

2. On this earthly plane, there exists a great and prosperous country named Uttara-Pāṇḍava, abundant with various forests.
नीरन्ध्रघनगम्भीरवनविश्रान्ततापसः ।
विद्याधरीकृतलतादोलोपवनपत्तनः ॥ ३ ॥

3. It is a place where ascetics (tāpasa) find rest in dense, deep, and impenetrable forests, and where celestial maidens (vidyādharī) have fashioned groves into settlements featuring creeper-swings.
वातोद्धूताञ्जकिञ्जल्कपुञ्जपिञ्जरपर्वतः ।
लसत्कुसुमसंभारवनमालावतंसकः ॥ ४ ॥
vātoddhūtāñjakiñjalkapuñjapiñjaraparvataḥ ,

4. The mountain is tawny with masses of stamens (kiñjalka) from Añja flowers, scattered by the wind, and it is ornamented with magnificent garlands (vanamālā) of forest flowers abundant with resplendent blossoms.
करञ्जमञ्जरीकुञ्जगुच्छपर्यन्तजङ्गलः ।
खर्जूरान्तरितग्रामो घुंघुमध्वनिताम्बरः ॥ ५ ॥

kharjūrāntaritagrāmo ghuṃghumadhvanitāmbaraḥ 5

5. Its wilderness (jaṅgala) stretches to groves and thickets abundant with Karañja blossoms (mañjarī); its villages (grāma) are interspersed with date palms (kharjūra); and its sky (ambara) resounds with buzzing sounds (ghuṃghuma).
एकपिङ्गशिलाश्रेणीशालिकेदारपिङ्गलः ।
नीलकण्ठारवोद्दामवनजङ्गलमण्डितः ॥ ६ ॥

6. The area is tawny (piṅgala) due to its paddy fields (kedāra) of rice (śāli) and single rows (śreṇī) of yellowish-brown stones (śilā); it is also adorned (maṇḍita) by dense forests (vana) and wilderness (jaṅgala) resonant with the powerful calls (ārava) of blue-throated birds (nīlakaṇṭha).
सारसारवसंरम्भरणत्कनककाननः ।
तमालपाटलीनीलगिरिग्रामककुण्डलः ॥ ७ ॥
sārasāravasaṃrambharaṇatkanakakānanaḥ ,
tamālapāṭalīnīlagirigrāmakakuṇḍalaḥ 7

7. Possessing golden groves that resound with the intense cries of Sārasa cranes; and whose quarters are adorned with villages nestled amidst mountains, dark like tamāla, pale like pāṭalī, and blue.
विचित्रविहगव्यूहविरावकृतकाकलिः ।
नदीपरिसरोन्निद्रपारिभद्रद्रुमारुणः ॥ ८ ॥
vicitravihagavyūhavirāvakṛtakākaliḥ ,
nadīparisaronnidrapāribhadradrumāruṇaḥ 8

8. Whose sweet, soft murmurs are produced by the calls of diverse flocks of birds; and who is reddish like the blossoming Pāribhadra trees found on riverbanks.
गायत्कलमकेदारदारिकाहृतमन्मथः ।
पुष्पफलचलद्वातव्याधूतकुसुमाम्बुदः ॥ ९ ॥
gāyatkalamakedāradārikāhṛtamanmathaḥ ,
puṣpaphalacaladvātavyādhūtakusumāmbudaḥ 9

9. Whose desire (manmatha) is captivated by the singing girls in the paddy fields; and whose flower-laden clouds are agitated by the wind that moves through flowers and fruits.
दरीगृहविनिष्क्रान्तसिद्धचारणबन्दिकम् ।
स्वर्गादिव समानीय लावण्यमभिनिर्मितः ॥ १० ॥
darīgṛhaviniṣkrāntasiddhacāraṇabandikam ,
svargādiva samānīya lāvaṇyamabhinirmitaḥ 10
10. darīgṛhaviniṣkrāntasiddhacāraṇabandikam
svargāt iva samānīya lāvaṇyam abhinirmitaḥ
10. svargāt iva samānīya lāvaṇyam
darīgṛhaviniṣkrāntasiddhacāraṇabandikam abhinirmitaḥ
10. He created a beauty (lāvaṇya) as if having collected it from heaven, a beauty worthy of praise from Siddhas, Cāraṇas, and bards who emerge from their cave-dwellings.
गायत्किन्नरगन्धर्वकदलीखण्डमण्डपः ।
मन्दानिलरवोद्भूतः पुष्पोपवनपाण्डुरः ॥ ११ ॥
gāyatkinnaragandharvakadalīkhaṇḍamaṇḍapaḥ ,
mandānilaravodbhūtaḥ puṣpopavanapāṇḍuraḥ 11

11. Here, pavilions are formed by banana groves, where Kinnaras and Gandharvas sing. A gentle breeze creates a soft murmur, and the area appears pale due to its flower gardens.
तत्रास्ति लवणो नाम राजा परमधार्मिकः ।
हरिश्चन्द्रकुलोद्भूतो भूमाविव दिवाकरः ॥ १२ ॥
tatrāsti lavaṇo nāma rājā paramadhārmikaḥ ,
hariścandrakulodbhūto bhūmāviva divākaraḥ 12
12. tatra asti lavaṇaḥ nāma rājā parama-dhārmikaḥ
hariścandra-kula-udbhūtaḥ bhūmau iva divākaraḥ
12. tatra lavaṇaḥ nāma rājā parama-dhārmikaḥ
hariścandra-kula-udbhūtaḥ bhūmau divākaraḥ iva asti
12. There is a king named Lavaṇa, supremely righteous (dharma-abiding). He was born in the lineage of Hariścandra, shining on earth like the sun.
यद्यशःकुसुमोत्तंसपाण्डुरस्कन्धमण्डलाः ।
तत्र शैला विराजन्ते हाराः प्रोद्धूलिता इव ॥ १३ ॥
yadyaśaḥkusumottaṃsapāṇḍuraskandhamaṇḍalāḥ ,
tatra śailā virājante hārāḥ proddhūlitā iva 13
13. yadyaśaḥkusumottaṃsapāṇḍuraskandhamaṇḍalāḥ
tatra śailāḥ virājante hārāḥ proddhūlitāḥ iva

13. There, the mountains, with their vast peaks made white by the floral garlands of his fame, shine splendidly as if they were scattered pearl necklaces.
कृपाणशकलोत्कृत्तनिःशेषारातिमण्डलः ।
अरातिलोकः प्राप्नोति यदनुस्मरणाज्ज्वरम् ॥ १४ ॥
kṛpāṇaśakalotkṛttaniḥśeṣārātimaṇḍalaḥ ,
arātilokaḥ prāpnoti yadanusmaraṇājjvaram 14
14. kṛpāṇaśakalotkṛttaniḥśeṣārātimaṇḍalaḥ
arātilokaḥ prāpnoti yat anusmaraṇāt jvaram
14. kṛpāṇaśakalotkṛttaniḥśeṣārātimaṇḍalaḥ (rājā)
yat anusmaraṇāt arātilokaḥ jvaram prāpnoti
14. The one who has completely destroyed the entire host of enemies with the blade of his sword, causes the enemy populace to suffer anguish (jvara) merely by being remembered.
यस्याप्सरोमिरद्रीन्द्रमूर्धस्वमरसद्मसु ।
विकासिपुलकोल्लासं गीयन्ते गुणगीतयः ॥ १६ ॥
yasyāpsaromiradrīndramūrdhasvamarasadmasu ,
vikāsipulakollāsaṃ gīyante guṇagītayaḥ 16
16. yasya apsarobhiḥ adrīndramūrdhasu amarasadmasu
vikāsipulakollāsam gīyante guṇagītayaḥ
16. yasya guṇagītayaḥ apsarobhiḥ adrīndramūrdhasu
amarasadmasu vikāsipulakollāsam gīyante
16. Whose songs of praise are sung by celestial nymphs (apsaras) on the peaks of the king of mountains and in the abodes of the gods, with an expansive thrill of joy.
यस्योदारसमारम्भमार्यलोकानुपालनम् ।
चरितं संस्मरिष्यन्ति हरेरिव चिरं जनाः ॥ १७ ॥
yasyodārasamārambhamāryalokānupālanam ,
caritaṃ saṃsmariṣyanti hareriva ciraṃ janāḥ 17
17. yasya udārasamārambham āryalokānupālanam
caritam saṃsmariṣyanti hareḥ iva ciram janāḥ
17. janāḥ yasya udārasamārambham āryalokānupālanam
caritam hareḥ iva ciram saṃsmariṣyanti
17. People will long remember his noble undertakings and his protection of noble individuals, just as they remember the deeds of Hari.
स्वप्नेष्वपि न सामान्या यस्योदारचमत्कृतिः ।
राम दृष्टा श्रुता वापि दैन्यदोषमयी क्रिया ॥ १८ ॥
svapneṣvapi na sāmānyā yasyodāracamatkṛtiḥ ,
rāma dṛṣṭā śrutā vāpi dainyadoṣamayī kriyā 18
18. svapneṣu api na sāmānyā yasya udāracamatkṛtiḥ
rāma dṛṣṭā śrutā vā api dainyadoṣamayī kriyā
18. rāma,
yasya udāracamatkṛtiḥ sāmānyā na.
svapneṣu api dainyadoṣamayī kriyā dṛṣṭā vā api śrutā na.
18. O Rāma, whose magnificent deeds are far from ordinary. Never, not even in dreams, has any act of wretchedness or fault been seen or or heard from him.
जिह्मतां यो न जानाति न दृष्टा येन धृष्णुता ।
उदारता येन धृता ब्रह्मणेवाक्षमालिका ॥ १९ ॥
jihmatāṃ yo na jānāti na dṛṣṭā yena dhṛṣṇutā ,
udāratā yena dhṛtā brahmaṇevākṣamālikā 19
19. jihmatām yaḥ na jānāti na dṛṣṭā yena dhṛṣṇutā
udāratā yena dhṛtā brahmaṇā iva akṣamālikā
19. yaḥ jihmatām na jānāti,
yena dhṛṣṇutā na dṛṣṭā.
yena udāratā brahmaṇā iva akṣamālikā dhṛtā.
19. He who does not know crookedness, and by whom impudence has never been witnessed. By him, generosity (udāratā) is upheld like a rosary (akṣamālikā) by Brahmā.
दिनाष्टभागमाकाशमागते दिवसाधिपे ।
स कदाचित्सभास्थाने सिंहासनगतोऽभवत् ॥ २० ॥
dināṣṭabhāgamākāśamāgate divasādhipe ,
sa kadācitsabhāsthāne siṃhāsanagato'bhavat 20
20. dināṣṭabhāgam ākāśam āgate divasādhipe sa
kadācit sabhāsthāne siṃhāsana-gataḥ abhavat
20. divasādhipe dināṣṭabhāgam ākāśam āgate sa
kadācit sabhāsthāne siṃhāsana-gataḥ abhavat
20. At the eighth part of the day, when the lord of the day (sun) had risen into the sky, he would sometimes sit upon his throne in the assembly hall.
सुखोपविष्टे तत्रास्मिन्राजनीन्दाविवाम्बरे ।
प्रविशन्तीषु सामन्तसेनासु च ससंभ्रमम् ॥ २१ ॥
sukhopaviṣṭe tatrāsminrājanīndāvivāmbare ,
praviśantīṣu sāmantasenāsu ca sasaṃbhramam 21
21. sukhopaviṣṭe tatra asmin rājani indau iva ambare
praviśantīṣu sāmantasenāsu ca sasaṃbhramam
21. asmin rājani ambare indau iva tatra sukhopaviṣṭe,
sasaṃbhramam sāmantasenāsu ca praviśantīṣu
21. When that king was comfortably seated there, like the moon in the sky, and while the armies of the feudatories were entering with great bustle and respect.
गायन्तीष्वथ कान्तासु सूपविष्टेषु राजसु ।
मनो हरति साह्लादे वीणावंशकलारवे ॥ २२ ॥
gāyantīṣvatha kāntāsu sūpaviṣṭeṣu rājasu ,
mano harati sāhlāde vīṇāvaṃśakalārave 22
22. gāyantīṣu atha kāntāsu sūpaviṣṭeṣu rājasu
manaḥ harati sāhlāde vīṇāvaṃśakalarave
22. atha kāntāsu gāyantīṣu rājasu sūpaviṣṭeṣu,
sāhlāde vīṇāvaṃśakalarave manaḥ harati
22. Then, while beautiful women were singing and kings were comfortably seated, the mind was captivated amidst the delightful and melodious sound of lutes and flutes.
चारुचामरहस्तासु सविलासासु राजनि ।
देवासुरगुरुप्रख्ये विश्रान्ते मन्त्रिमण्डले ॥ २३ ॥
cārucāmarahastāsu savilāsāsu rājani ,
devāsuraguruprakhye viśrānte mantrimaṇḍale 23
23. cāru-cāmara-hastāsu savilāsāsu rājani
devāsuraguru-prakhye viśrānte mantrimaṇḍale
23. savilāsāsu cāru-cāmara-hastāsu (strīṣu),
devāsuraguru-prakhye rājani,
mantrimaṇḍale viśrānte
23. While graceful women held beautiful chowries in their hands, and the king, resembling the preceptors of both gods and asuras, presided, the council of ministers was at ease.
प्रस्तुतेषु प्रविष्टेषु राजकार्येषु मन्त्रिभिः ।
प्रोक्तासु देशवार्तासु निपुणैश्चारुमन्त्रिभिः ॥ २४ ॥
prastuteṣu praviṣṭeṣu rājakāryeṣu mantribhiḥ ,
proktāsu deśavārtāsu nipuṇaiścārumantribhiḥ 24
24. prastuteṣu praviṣṭeṣu rājakāryeṣu mantribhiḥ
proktāsu deśavārtāsu nipuṇaiḥ ca cārumantribhiḥ
24. mantribhiḥ prastuteṣu praviṣṭeṣu rājakāryeṣu ca
nipuṇaiḥ cārumantribhiḥ proktāsu deśavārtāsu
24. While the royal affairs were being presented and taken up by the ministers, and the news of the country was being discussed by the skillful and competent ministers.
इतिह्यसमये पुण्ये वाच्यमाने च पुस्तके ।
पठत्सु च स्तुतीः पुण्याः पुरः प्रह्वेषु वन्दिषु ॥ २५ ॥
itihyasamaye puṇye vācyamāne ca pustake ,
paṭhatsu ca stutīḥ puṇyāḥ puraḥ prahveṣu vandiṣu 25
25. itihyasamaye puṇye vācyamāne ca pustake
paṭatsu ca stutīḥ puṇyāḥ puraḥ prahveṣu vandiṣu
25. puṇye itihyasamaye ca pustake vācyamāne ca
puraḥ prahveṣu vandiṣu puṇyāḥ stutīḥ paṭatsu
25. At the sacred time when historical narratives were being recited and books were being read, and when bards, standing humbly in front, were reciting sacred hymns.
सभां विवेश साटोपः कश्चित्तामैन्द्रजालिकः ।
वर्षेणाहितसंरम्भो वसुधामिव वारिदः ॥ २६ ॥
sabhāṃ viveśa sāṭopaḥ kaścittāmaindrajālikaḥ ,
varṣeṇāhitasaṃrambho vasudhāmiva vāridaḥ 26
26. sabhām viveśa sāṭopaḥ kaścit tām aindrajālikaḥ
varṣeṇa āhitasaṃrambhaḥ vasudhām iva vāridaḥ
26. kaścit aindrajālikaḥ sāṭopaḥ tām sabhām viveśa
vāridaḥ varṣeṇa āhitasaṃrambhaḥ vasudhām iva
26. A certain magician, filled with pride, entered that assembly, just as a cloud (vāri-da) causes a surge of activity on the earth (vasudhā) with its rain.
स ननाम महीपालं शिखरोदारकन्धरम् ।
पादोपान्तगतः कान्तं शैलं फलतरुर्यथा ॥ २७ ॥
sa nanāma mahīpālaṃ śikharodārakandharam ,
pādopāntagataḥ kāntaṃ śailaṃ phalataruryathā 27
27. sa nanāma mahīpālam śikharodārakandharam
pādopāntagataḥ kāntam śailam phalataruḥ yathā
27. sa pādopāntagataḥ śikharodārakandharam
mahīpālam nanāma yathā phalataruḥ kāntam śailam
27. He bowed to the king, who had a noble, towering neck, approaching his feet, just as a fruit tree (phala-taru) bows before a beautiful mountain.
सच्छायस्योन्नतांसस्य फलिनः पुष्पभासिनः ।
स विवेश पुरो राज्ञस्तरोरग्रे कपिर्यथा ॥ २८ ॥
sacchāyasyonnatāṃsasya phalinaḥ puṣpabhāsinaḥ ,
sa viveśa puro rājñastaroragre kapiryathā 28
28. satcchāyasya unnatāṃsasya phalinaḥ puṣpabhāsinaḥ
saḥ viveśa puraḥ rājñaḥ taroḥ agre kapiḥ yathā
28. saḥ rājñaḥ puraḥ satcchāyasya unnatāṃsasya phalinaḥ
puṣpabhāsinaḥ taroḥ agre kapiḥ yathā viveśa
28. He entered before the king, just as a monkey ascends to the top of a tree that is well-shaded, with high branches, fruitful, and radiant with blossoms.
चपलो लम्पटोऽर्थानामामोदसुखमारुतम् ।
उवाचोत्कन्धरं भूपं सपद्ममिव षट्पदः ॥ २९ ॥
capalo lampaṭo'rthānāmāmodasukhamārutam ,
uvācotkandharaṃ bhūpaṃ sapadmamiva ṣaṭpadaḥ 29
29. capalaḥ lampaṭaḥ arthānām āmoda-sukha-mārutam
uvāca utkandharam bhūpam sapadmam iva ṣaṭpadaḥ
29. arthānām capalaḥ lampaṭaḥ ṣaṭpadaḥ sapadmam iva
utkandharam āmoda-sukha-mārutam bhūpam uvāca
29. The fickle one, greedy for possessions, spoke to the king, whose neck was raised (in attention) and who was like a fragrant, pleasant breeze, just as a bee (ṣaṭpada) speaks to a lotus (sapadma).
विलोकय विभो तावदेकामिह खरोलिकाम् ।
पीठस्थ एव साश्चर्यां व्योम्नि चन्द्र इवावनिम् ॥ ३० ॥
vilokaya vibho tāvadekāmiha kharolikām ,
pīṭhastha eva sāścaryāṃ vyomni candra ivāvanim 30
30. vilokaya vibho tāvat ekām iha kharolikām
pīṭhasthaḥ eva sāścaryām vyomni candraḥ iva avanim
30. vibho iha tāvat ekām sāścaryām kharolikām
pīṭhasthaḥ eva candraḥ vyomni avanim iva vilokaya
30. Oh Lord, behold here just one wondrous puppet show (kharolikā) while you remain seated, just as the moon in the sky observes the earth.
इत्युक्त्वा पिच्छिका तेन भ्रामिता भ्रमदायिनी ।
नानाविरचनाबीजं मायेव परमात्मनः ॥ ३१ ॥
ityuktvā picchikā tena bhrāmitā bhramadāyinī ,
nānāviracanābījaṃ māyeva paramātmanaḥ 31
31. iti uktvā picchikā tena bhrāmitā bhramadāyinī
nānā-viracanā-bījam māyā iva paramātmanaḥ

nānā-viracanā-bījam paramātmanaḥ māyā iva bhrāmitā
31. Having spoken thus, the whisk (picchikā) was whirled by him, creating an illusion, just as the (cosmic) illusion (māyā) of the Supreme Self (paramātman) is the origin of diverse creations.
तां ददर्श महीपालस्तेजोरेणुविराजिताम् ।
शक्रः सुरविमानस्थः स्वकार्मुकलतामिव ॥ ३२ ॥
tāṃ dadarśa mahīpālastejoreṇuvirājitām ,
śakraḥ suravimānasthaḥ svakārmukalatāmiva 32
32. tām dadarśa mahīpālaḥ tejo-reṇu-virājitām
śakraḥ sura-vimāna-sthaḥ sva-kārmuka-latām iva
32. mahīpālaḥ tām tejo-reṇu-virājitām dadarśa,
śakraḥ sura-vimāna-sthaḥ sva-kārmuka-latām iva
32. The king saw her, radiant with particles of light, just as Indra, seated in his celestial chariot, observes his rainbow.
सभां सैन्धवसामन्तो विवेशास्मिन्क्षणे तदा ।
तारापरिकरापूर्णां व्योमवीथीमिवाम्बुदः ॥ ३३ ॥
sabhāṃ saindhavasāmanto viveśāsminkṣaṇe tadā ,
tārāparikarāpūrṇāṃ vyomavīthīmivāmbudaḥ 33
33. sabhām saindhava-sāmantaḥ viveśa asmin kṣaṇe tadā
tārā-parikara-āpūrṇām vyoma-vīthīm iva ambudaḥ
33. asmin kṣaṇe tadā saindhava-sāmantaḥ sabhām viveśa,
tārā-parikara-āpūrṇām vyoma-vīthīm ambudaḥ iva
33. At that very moment, the chieftain of Sindhu entered the assembly, much like a cloud enters the sky's expanse, which is filled with constellations of stars.
तं चैवानुजगामाश्वः सौम्यः परमवेगवान् ।
देवलोकोन्मुखं तुष्टं शक्रमुच्चैःश्रवा इव ॥ ३४ ॥
taṃ caivānujagāmāśvaḥ saumyaḥ paramavegavān ,
devalokonmukhaṃ tuṣṭaṃ śakramuccaiḥśravā iva 34
34. tam ca eva anujagāma aśvaḥ saumyaḥ parama-vegavān
devaloka-unmukham tuṣṭam śakram uccaiḥśravāḥ iva
34. saumyaḥ parama-vegavān aśvaḥ ca eva tam anujagāma,
devaloka-unmukham tuṣṭam śakram uccaiḥśravāḥ iva
34. And indeed, the gentle and exceedingly swift horse followed him, just as Ucchaiḥśravas (Indra's celestial horse) followed a contented Indra, who was headed towards the divine realm.
स तमश्वमुपादाय पार्थिवं समुवाच ह ।
सोच्चैःश्रवा इव क्षीरसागरो मरुतां पतिम् ॥ ३५ ॥
sa tamaśvamupādāya pārthivaṃ samuvāca ha ,
soccaiḥśravā iva kṣīrasāgaro marutāṃ patim 35
35. saḥ tam aśvam upādāya pārthivam samuvāca ha saḥ
uccaiḥśravāḥ iva kṣīra-sāgaraḥ marutām patim
35. saḥ tam aśvam upādāya pārthivam ha samuvāca,
kṣīra-sāgaraḥ saḥ uccaiḥśravāḥ iva marutām patim
35. Then, taking that horse, he (the chieftain) addressed the king, just as the Milk Ocean addressed the Lord of Maruts (Indra) as if presenting Ucchaiḥśravas (Indra's divine horse).
इदमुच्चैःश्रवःप्रख्यं हयरत्नं महीपते ।
जवोडुयनशीलेन मूर्तिमानिव मारुतः ॥ ३६ ॥
idamuccaiḥśravaḥprakhyaṃ hayaratnaṃ mahīpate ,
javoḍuyanaśīlena mūrtimāniva mārutaḥ 36
36. idam uccaiḥśravaḥprakhyam hayaratnam mahīpate
javauḍayanaśīlena mūrtimān iva mārutaḥ
36. mahīpate idam uccaiḥśravaḥprakhyam hayaratnam
javauḍayanaśīlena mārutaḥ mūrtimān iva
36. O king (mahīpate), this jewel among horses (haya-ratnam) resembles Uccaiḥśravas [the celestial horse]. With its nature of swift flight, it is as if the wind (māruta) itself has taken an embodied form.
अश्वोऽयमस्मत्प्रभुणा प्रभो संप्रहितस्त्वयि ।
राजते हि पदार्थश्रीर्महतामर्पणाच्छुभा ॥ ३७ ॥
aśvo'yamasmatprabhuṇā prabho saṃprahitastvayi ,
rājate hi padārthaśrīrmahatāmarpaṇācchubhā 37
37. aśvaḥ ayam asmatprabhuṇā prabho samprahitaḥ tvayi
rājate hi padārthaśrīḥ mahatām arpaṇāt śubhā
37. prabho ayam aśvaḥ asmatprabhuṇā tvayi samprahitaḥ
hi mahatām arpaṇāt padārthaśrīḥ śubhā rājate
37. O lord (prabho), this horse has been sent to you by our master. Indeed, the splendor of an object offered by great individuals shines auspiciously.
इत्युक्तवति तस्मिंस्तु प्रत्युवाचैन्द्रजालिकः ।
जलदस्तनिते शान्ते चातकोऽम्बुधरं यथा ॥ ३८ ॥
ityuktavati tasmiṃstu pratyuvācaindrajālikaḥ ,
jaladastanite śānte cātako'mbudharaṃ yathā 38
38. iti uktavati tasmin tu pratyuvāca aindrajālikaḥ
jaladastanite śānte cātakaḥ ambudharam yathā
38. tasmin iti uktavati tu aindrajālikaḥ pratyuvāca
yathā jaladastanite śānte cātakaḥ ambudharam
38. But when he had spoken thus, the magician (aindrajālika) replied, just as a cātaka bird [responds] to a cloud (ambudharam) after the thunder (stanite) of the rain-clouds (jalada) has subsided.
सदश्वमेनमारुह्य भुवनं विहर प्रभो ।
स्वप्रतापाहितानल्पशोभामुर्वीं रविर्यथा ॥ ३९ ॥
sadaśvamenamāruhya bhuvanaṃ vihara prabho ,
svapratāpāhitānalpaśobhāmurvīṃ raviryathā 39
39. sadaśvam enam āruhya bhuvanam vihara prabho
svapratāpāhitānalpaśobhām urvīm raviḥ yathā
39. prabho enam sadaśvam āruhya svapratāpāhitānalpaśobhām
urvīm raviḥ yathā bhuvanam vihara
39. O lord (prabho), mount this excellent horse (sadaśva) and traverse the world (bhuvana), just as the sun (ravi) [pervades] the earth (urvī) which has been imbued with immense glory by your own prowess (svapratāpa).
अश्वमालोकयामास तेनोक्त इति पार्थिवः ।
निर्घातस्तनितं मेघं मयूर इव सूत्करः ॥ ४० ॥
aśvamālokayāmāsa tenokta iti pārthivaḥ ,
nirghātastanitaṃ meghaṃ mayūra iva sūtkaraḥ 40
40. aśvam ālokayāmāsa tena uktaḥ iti pārthivaḥ
nirghāta-stanitam megham mayūraḥ iva sūtkaraḥ
40. pārthivaḥ tena uktaḥ iti nirghāta-stanitam
megham mayūraḥ iva sūtkaraḥ aśvam ālokayāmāsa
40. The king gazed upon the horse, as if prompted by it, just as a peacock loudly cries out at a thundering cloud struck by lightning.
अथानिमेषया दृष्ट्या राजा चित्रोपमाकृतिः ।
बभूवालोकयन्नश्वं लिपिकर्मार्पितोपमः ॥ ४१ ॥
athānimeṣayā dṛṣṭyā rājā citropamākṛtiḥ ,
babhūvālokayannaśvaṃ lipikarmārpitopamaḥ 41
41. atha animeṣayā dṛṣṭyā rājā citra-upamā-ākṛtiḥ
babhūva ālokayan aśvam lipikarma-arpita-upamaḥ
41. atha rājā animeṣayā dṛṣṭyā aśvam ālokayan
citra-upamā-ākṛtiḥ lipikarma-arpita-upamaḥ babhūva
41. Then, as he gazed at the horse with an unblinking stare, the king became like a figure in a painting, resembling an image fixed by an artist's brush.
क्षणमालोक्य पीठस्थस्तस्थौ संस्थगितेक्षणः ।
दृष्ट्याऽऽक्षुब्धः समुद्रोऽद्रिमीनकैः करवो यथा ॥ ४२ ॥
kṣaṇamālokya pīṭhasthastasthau saṃsthagitekṣaṇaḥ ,
dṛṣṭyā''kṣubdhaḥ samudro'drimīnakaiḥ karavo yathā 42
42. kṣaṇam ālokya pīṭhasthaḥ tasthau saṃsthagita-īkṣaṇaḥ
dṛṣṭyā ākṣubdhaḥ samudraḥ adri-mīnakaiḥ karavaḥ yathā
42. kṣaṇam ālokya pīṭhasthaḥ saṃsthagita-īkṣaṇaḥ tasthau
samudraḥ adri-mīnakaiḥ karavaḥ yathā dṛṣṭyā ākṣubdhaḥ
42. Having gazed for a moment, he remained seated, his eyes fixed. He was agitated by the sight, just as the ocean is stirred by mountain-sized fish, or like a shark (stirred to action).
तस्थौ मुहूर्तयुग्मं स ध्यानासक्त इवात्मनि ।
वीतरागो मुनिः क्षुब्धः परानन्द इव स्थितः ॥ ४३ ॥
tasthau muhūrtayugmaṃ sa dhyānāsakta ivātmani ,
vītarāgo muniḥ kṣubdhaḥ parānanda iva sthitaḥ 43
43. tasthau muhūrta-yugmam saḥ dhyāna-āsaktaḥ iva ātmani
vīta-rāgaḥ muniḥ kṣubdhaḥ para-ānandaḥ iva sthitaḥ
43. saḥ muhūrta-yugmam ātmani dhyāna-āsaktaḥ iva tasthau
vīta-rāgaḥ muniḥ kṣubdhaḥ para-ānandaḥ iva sthitaḥ
43. He remained for two *muhūrtas* (a period of time), as if completely absorbed in meditation (dhyāna) on his inner self (ātman). He was like a dispassionate sage who, though inwardly agitated, remained in a state of supreme bliss.
बोधितः केनचिन्नासौ स्वप्रतापजितोर्जितः ।
धिया कामप्ययं भूयश्चिन्तां चिन्तयतीति च ॥ ४४ ॥
bodhitaḥ kenacinnāsau svapratāpajitorjitaḥ ,
dhiyā kāmapyayaṃ bhūyaścintāṃ cintayatīti ca 44
44. bodhitaḥ kenacit na asau sva-pratāpa-jita-ūrjitaḥ
dhiyā kām api ayam bhūyaḥ cintām cintayati iti ca
44. asau sva-pratāpa-jita-ūrjitaḥ kenacit na bodhitaḥ
ayam dhiyā kām api cintām bhūyaḥ cintayati iti ca
44. He could not be awakened by anyone, as he had conquered the mighty by his own prowess. Rather, he pondered some thought further with his intellect.
बभूवुः केवलं तत्र निःस्पन्दसितचामराः ।
चामरिण्यो हि शर्वर्यः स्तम्भितेन्दुकरा इव ॥ ४५ ॥
babhūvuḥ kevalaṃ tatra niḥspandasitacāmarāḥ ,
cāmariṇyo hi śarvaryaḥ stambhitendukarā iva 45
45. babhūvuḥ kevalam tatra niḥspanda-sita-cāmarāḥ
cāmariṇyaḥ hi śarvaryaḥ stambhita-indu-karāḥ iva
45. tatra kevalam niḥspanda-sita-cāmarāḥ babhūvuḥ hi
cāmariṇyaḥ stambhita-indu-karāḥ śarvaryaḥ iva
45. There were only motionless white chowries there. Indeed, the chowrie-bearers were like nights whose moonbeams had been frozen.
विरेजुर्विस्मयापूर्णा निःस्पन्दास्ते सभासदः ।
निःस्पन्दकिञ्जल्कदलाः पद्माः पङ्ककृता इव ॥ ४६ ॥
virejurvismayāpūrṇā niḥspandāste sabhāsadaḥ ,
niḥspandakiñjalkadalāḥ padmāḥ paṅkakṛtā iva 46
46. virejuḥ vismaya-āpūrṇāḥ niḥspandāḥ te sabhāsadaḥ
niḥspanda-kiñjalka-dalāḥ padmāḥ paṅka-kṛtāḥ iva
46. te vismaya-āpūrṇāḥ niḥspandāḥ sabhāsadaḥ virejuḥ
paṅka-kṛtāḥ niḥspanda-kiñjalka-dalāḥ padmāḥ iva
46. Those motionless assembly members, filled with astonishment, shone brightly. They were like lotuses whose stamens and petals are motionless, as if stuck in mud.
प्रशशाम सभास्थाने जनकोलाहलः शनैः ।
प्रशान्तप्रावृषि व्योमन्याम्भोदमिव गर्जितम् ॥ ४७ ॥
praśaśāma sabhāsthāne janakolāhalaḥ śanaiḥ ,
praśāntaprāvṛṣi vyomanyāmbhodamiva garjitam 47
47. praśaśāma sabhā-sthāne jana-kolāhalaḥ śanaiḥ
praśānta-prāvṛṣi vyomani ambhodam iva garjitam
47. sabhā-sthāne jana-kolāhalaḥ śanaiḥ praśaśāma
praśānta-prāvṛṣi vyomani ambhodam iva garjitam
47. The clamor of the people in the assembly hall slowly subsided, just like thunder in a sky where the rainy season has become calm.
संदेहसागरे मग्ना जग्मुश्चिन्तां सुमन्त्रिणः ।
विषीदति गदापाणावसुराजाविवामराः ॥ ४८ ॥
saṃdehasāgare magnā jagmuścintāṃ sumantriṇaḥ ,
viṣīdati gadāpāṇāvasurājāvivāmarāḥ 48
48. saṃdehasāgare magnāḥ jagmuḥ cintām sumantriṇaḥ
viṣīdati gadāpāṇau asurājāḥ iva amarāḥ
48. sumantriṇaḥ saṃdehasāgare magnāḥ cintām jagmuḥ
[saḥ] gadāpāṇau asurājāḥ iva amarāḥ viṣīdati
48. The good ministers, plunged in an ocean of doubt, became anxious. The king himself became dejected, just as the gods become distressed when the mace-wielding Vishnu is afflicted by the demon kings.
विततविस्मितजिह्नितया तया जनतया भयमोहविषण्णया ।
स्तिमितचक्षुषि भूमिपतौ स्थिते मुकुलिताज्जवनस्य धृता द्युतिः ॥ ४९ ॥
vitatavismitajihnitayā tayā janatayā bhayamohaviṣaṇṇayā ,
stimitacakṣuṣi bhūmipatau sthite mukulitājjavanasya dhṛtā dyutiḥ 49
49. vitatavismitajiḥnitayā tayā

49. As the king stood with his eyes still and motionless, his radiance was held back, as if from a closed bud (of his inner state), while that populace was overwhelmed by widespread astonishment, shame, fear, and confusion.
