मुहूर्तद्वितयेनाथ बोधमाप महीपतिः ।
प्रावृषेण्याम्बुनिर्मुक्तमम्भोरुहमिवोत्तमम् ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, in two moments, the king regained consciousness, like an excellent lotus freed from the waters of the rainy season.
आसनात्साङ्गदोत्तंसः प्रबुद्धोऽसावकम्पयत् ।
सवनाभोगशृङ्गाग्र्यो भूकम्प इव पर्वतः ॥ २ ॥
āsanātsāṅgadottaṃsaḥ prabuddho'sāvakampayat ,
savanābhogaśṛṅgāgryo bhūkampa iva parvataḥ 2
2. āsanāt sa-aṅgada-uttaṃsaḥ prabuddhaḥ asau akampayat
savana-ābhoga-śṛṅga-agryaḥ bhūkampaḥ iva parvataḥ
2. asau sa-aṅgada-uttaṃsaḥ prabuddhaḥ āsanāt
savana-ābhoga-śṛṅga-agryaḥ bhūkampaḥ iva parvataḥ akampayat
2. That awakened king, adorned with armlets and a crest, shook (trembled) from his seat, like a mountain with vast forests and eminent peaks trembles during an earthquake.
बभूवाथ प्रबुद्धोऽसावासनोपरि कम्पितः ।
विक्षुब्ध इव पातालवारणे शङ्कराचलः ॥ ३ ॥
babhūvātha prabuddho'sāvāsanopari kampitaḥ ,
vikṣubdha iva pātālavāraṇe śaṅkarācalaḥ 3
3. babūva atha prabuddhaḥ asau āsana upari kampitaḥ
vikṣubdhaḥ iva pātālavāraṇe śaṅkarācalaḥ
3. atha asau prabuddhaḥ āsana upari kampitaḥ
babūva pātālavāraṇe vikṣubdhaḥ śaṅkarācalaḥ iva
3. Then, that king, having awakened, trembled upon his seat, as if Mount Kailasa (śaṅkarācala) were shaken by the elephant (vāraṇa) of the netherworld (pātāla).
पतन्तं धारयामासुस्तं पुरोगा नृपं भुजैः ।
मेरुं प्रलयविक्षुब्धं कुलशैलास्तटैरिव ॥ ४ ॥
patantaṃ dhārayāmāsustaṃ purogā nṛpaṃ bhujaiḥ ,
meruṃ pralayavikṣubdhaṃ kulaśailāstaṭairiva 4
4. patantam dhārayāmāsuḥ tam purogāḥ nṛpam bhujaiḥ
merum pralayavikṣubdham kulaśailāḥ taṭaiḥ iva
4. purogāḥ bhujaiḥ tam patantam nṛpam dhārayāmāsuḥ
kulśailāḥ taṭaiḥ pralayavikṣubdham merum iva
4. His attendants (purogāḥ) held that falling king with their arms, just as the principal mountains (kulaśaila) support Mount Meru (meru) when it is agitated by the cosmic dissolution (pralaya).
पुरोगैर्धार्यमाणोऽसौ पर्याकुलमतिर्नृपः ।
वीचिविक्षोभितस्येन्दोर्बभार वनमाः श्रियः ॥ ५ ॥
purogairdhāryamāṇo'sau paryākulamatirnṛpaḥ ,
vīcivikṣobhitasyendorbabhāra vanamāḥ śriyaḥ 5
5. purogaiḥ dhāryamāṇaḥ asau paryākulamatiḥ nṛpaḥ
vīcivikṣobhitasya indoḥ babhāra vanamāḥ śriyaḥ
5. asau nṛpaḥ purogaiḥ dhāryamāṇaḥ paryākulamatiḥ
vanamāḥ śriyaḥ vīcivikṣobhitasya indoḥ babhāra
5. That king, held by his attendants (purogāḥ) and with a bewildered mind, bore forest garlands (vanamāḥ) and assumed an appearance (śrī) like that of the moon (indu) agitated by waves (vīci).
कोऽयं प्रदेशः कस्येयं सभेति स नृपः शनैः ।
दध्वान मज्जदम्भोजकोशस्थ इव षट्पदः ॥ ६ ॥
ko'yaṃ pradeśaḥ kasyeyaṃ sabheti sa nṛpaḥ śanaiḥ ,
dadhvāna majjadambhojakośastha iva ṣaṭpadaḥ 6
6. kaḥ ayam pradeśaḥ kasya iyam sabhā iti saḥ nṛpaḥ
śanaiḥ dadhvāna majjadambhojakośasthaḥ iva ṣaṭpadaḥ
6. saḥ nṛpaḥ śanaiḥ kaḥ ayam pradeśaḥ kasya iyam sabhā
iti majjadambhojakośasthaḥ ṣaṭpadaḥ iva dadhvāna
6. 'What is this place? Whose assembly is this?' – thus, that king slowly murmured, like a bee (ṣaṭpada) dwelling in the calyx of a sinking lotus (ambhoja).
अथोवाच सभा देव किमेतदिति सादरम् ।
रणन्मधुकरी भानुं दृष्टराहुमिवालिनी ॥ ७ ॥
athovāca sabhā deva kimetaditi sādaram ,
raṇanmadhukarī bhānuṃ dṛṣṭarāhumivālinī 7
7. atha uvāca sabhā deva kim etat iti sādaram
raṇat madhukarī bhānum dṛṣṭa-rāhum iva alinī
7. atha sabhā sādaram deva kim etat iti uvāca
alinī raṇat madhukarī bhānum dṛṣṭa-rāhum iva
7. Then the assembly respectfully asked, "O lord, what is this?" It was like a buzzing female bee, seeing the sun as if it were Rāhu [during an eclipse, and thus distressed].
अथैनं परिपप्रच्छुः पुरोगा मन्त्रिणस्तथा ।
प्रलयोल्लाससंत्रस्तं मार्कण्डेयमिवामराः ॥ ८ ॥
athainaṃ paripapracchuḥ purogā mantriṇastathā ,
pralayollāsasaṃtrastaṃ mārkaṇḍeyamivāmarāḥ 8
8. atha enam paripaprachchuḥ puragāḥ mantriṇaḥ tathā
pralaya-ullāsa-santrastam mārkaṇḍeyam iva amarāḥ
8. atha puragāḥ mantriṇaḥ tathā enam paripaprachchuḥ
amarāḥ pralaya-ullāsa-santrastam mārkaṇḍeyam iva
8. Then the chief ministers and other leaders questioned him, just as the immortals (amarāḥ), terrified by the exuberance of cosmic dissolution (pralaya), once questioned the sage Mārkaṇḍeya.
त्वयीत्थं संस्थिते देव वयमत्यन्तमाकुलाः ।
अभेद्यमपि भिन्दन्ति निर्निमित्तं भ्रमा मनः ॥ ९ ॥
tvayītthaṃ saṃsthite deva vayamatyantamākulāḥ ,
abhedyamapi bhindanti nirnimittaṃ bhramā manaḥ 9
9. tvayi ittham saṃsthite deva vayam atyantam ākulāḥ
abhedyam api bhindanti nir-nimittam bhramāḥ manaḥ
9. deva tvayi ittham saṃsthite vayam atyantam ākulāḥ
nir-nimittam bhramāḥ abhedyam api manaḥ bhindanti
9. O lord, with you in this state, we are extremely anxious. Illusions (bhramāḥ), even without a specific cause, can disturb even an unshakeable mind.
आपातरमणीयेषु पर्यन्तविरसेषु च ।
भोगेष्विव विकल्पेषु केषु ते लुलितं मनः ॥ १० ॥
āpātaramaṇīyeṣu paryantaviraseṣu ca ,
bhogeṣviva vikalpeṣu keṣu te lulitaṃ manaḥ 10
10. āpāta-ramaṇīyeṣu paryanta-viraseṣu ca
bhogeṣu iva vikalpeṣu keṣu te lulitam manaḥ
10. āpāta-ramaṇīyeṣu paryanta-viraseṣu ca
bhogeṣu iva keṣu vikalpeṣu te manaḥ lulitam
10. Among which kinds of choices, which are like sensual enjoyments that appear delightful at first but become unpleasant in the end, has your mind (manaḥ) become bewildered?
सततोदारवृत्तासु कथासु परिशीतलम् ।
मनस्ते निर्मलं कस्मात्संभ्रमेषु निमज्जति ॥ ११ ॥
satatodāravṛttāsu kathāsu pariśītalam ,
manaste nirmalaṃ kasmātsaṃbhrameṣu nimajjati 11
11. satatodāravṛttāsu kathāsu pariśītalam manas
te nirmalam kasmāt saṃbhramesu nimajjati
11. te manaḥ satatodāravṛttāsu kathāsu pariśītalam
nirmalam kasmāt saṃbhramesu nimajjati?
11. Your mind, which is so serene and pure amidst tales of noble deeds, why does it sink into turmoil?
तुच्छालम्बनमालूनविशीर्णं लोकवृत्तिषु ।
मनो मोहमुपादत्ते न महत्त्वविजृम्भितम् ॥ १२ ॥
tucchālambanamālūnaviśīrṇaṃ lokavṛttiṣu ,
mano mohamupādatte na mahattvavijṛmbhitam 12
12. tucchālambanamālūnaviśīrṇam lokavṛttiṣu
manaḥ moham upādatte na mahattvavijṛmbhitam
12. tucchālambanamālūnaviśīrṇam lokavṛttiṣu manaḥ moham upādatte,
mahattvavijṛmbhitam na (upādatte).
12. The mind, having trivial supports, withered and decaying amidst worldly pursuits, embraces delusion (moha), not that which manifests greatness.
सातत्येन हि यैवास्य मनसो वृत्तिरुत्थिता ।
शरीरमदमत्तासु तामेवैतद्विधावति ॥ १३ ॥
sātatyena hi yaivāsya manaso vṛttirutthitā ,
śarīramadamattāsu tāmevaitadvidhāvati 13
13. sātatye na hi yā eva asya manasaḥ vṛttiḥ
utthitā śarīramadamattāsu tām eva etat vidhāvati
13. hi sātatye na asya manasaḥ yā eva vṛttiḥ śarīramadamattāsu utthitā,
etat tām eva vidhāvati.
13. Indeed, whatever tendency of this mind consistently arises in situations involving those deluded by bodily intoxication, that very tendency this mind pursues.
अतुच्छालम्बनं धीरं प्रबुद्धं गुणहारि च ।
तवापि हि मनश्चित्रमालूनमिव लक्ष्यते ॥ १४ ॥
atucchālambanaṃ dhīraṃ prabuddhaṃ guṇahāri ca ,
tavāpi hi manaścitramālūnamiva lakṣyate 14
14. atucchālambanam dhīram prabuddham guṇahāri ca
tava api hi manas citram ālūnam iva lakṣyate
14. hi tava api manas atucchālambanam dhīram prabuddham ca guṇahāri citram ālūnam iva lakṣyate.
14. Indeed, even your mind, which has a substantial foundation, is steadfast, awakened, and charming, appears as if it were withered.
अनभ्यस्तविवेकं हि देशकालवशानुगम् ।
मन्त्रौषधिवशं याति मनो नोदारवृत्तिमत् ॥ १५ ॥
anabhyastavivekaṃ hi deśakālavaśānugam ,
mantrauṣadhivaśaṃ yāti mano nodāravṛttimat 15
15. anabhyastavivekam hi deśakālavaśānugam
mantrauṣadhivaśam yāti manaḥ na udāravṛttimat
15. hi anabhyastavivekam deśakālavaśānugam
udāravṛttimat na manaḥ mantrauṣadhivaśam yāti
15. Indeed, a mind (manas) that is not accustomed to discrimination (viveka), that follows the dictates of place and time, and is not endowed with a noble disposition, falls under the sway of charms and medicines.
नित्यमात्तविवेकस्य कथमालूनशीर्णता ।
धुनोति विततं चेतो वात्येव विबुधाचलम् ॥ १६ ॥
nityamāttavivekasya kathamālūnaśīrṇatā ,
dhunoti vitataṃ ceto vātyeva vibudhācalam 16
16. nityam āttavivekasya katham ālūnaśīrṇatā
dhunoti vitatam cetaḥ vātyā iva vibudhācalam
16. vātyā iva vibudhācalam,
ālūnaśīrṇatā nityam āttavivekasya vitatam cetaḥ katham dhunoti
16. How can constant decay and agitation shake the expansive consciousness (cetas) of one who has always embraced discrimination (viveka), just as a hurricane cannot shake the mountain of the gods?
इति जातानुगीर्णस्य भूपतेः कान्तिराननम् ।
भूषयामास शीतांशुं मासान्त इव पूर्णता ॥ १७ ॥
iti jātānugīrṇasya bhūpateḥ kāntirānanam ,
bhūṣayāmāsa śītāṃśuṃ māsānta iva pūrṇatā 17
17. iti jātānugīrṇasya bhūpateḥ kāntiḥ ānanam
bhūṣayāmāsa śītāṃśum māsānte iva pūrṇatā
17. iti jātānugīrṇasya bhūpateḥ ānanam kāntiḥ bhūṣayāmāsa,
māsānte pūrṇatā iva śītāṃśum
17. Thus, after the king had spoken, a radiant glow adorned his face, just as the fullness of the moon adorns the cool-rayed orb at the month's end.
रराज राजा सौम्यास्यमुन्मीलितविलोचनः ।
गते हिमर्तावुल्लासिपुष्पौघ इव माधवः ॥ १८ ॥
rarāja rājā saumyāsyamunmīlitavilocanaḥ ,
gate himartāvullāsipuṣpaugha iva mādhavaḥ 18
18. rarāja rājā saumyāsyam unmīlitavilocanaḥ
gate himartau ullāsipuṣpaughaḥ iva mādhavaḥ
18. rājā saumyāsyam unmīlitavilocanaḥ rarāja;
himartau gate ullāsipuṣpaughaḥ mādhavaḥ iva
18. The king appeared radiant, with a gentle countenance and open eyes, like the spring season (Mādhava) when the cold season has departed and a profusion of blossoming flowers shines forth.
अथातिसंभ्रमाश्चर्यखिन्नास्मृतिमुखो बभौ ।
आसन्नमृत्युरालोक्य राहुमिन्दुरिवाम्बरे ॥ १९ ॥
athātisaṃbhramāścaryakhinnāsmṛtimukho babhau ,
āsannamṛtyurālokya rāhumindurivāmbare 19
19. atha atisaṃbhramāścaryakhinnāsmṛtimukhaḥ babhau
āsannamṛtyuḥ ālokya rāhum induḥ iva ambare
19. atha āsannamṛtyuḥ induḥ iva ambare rāhum ālokya
atisaṃbhramāścaryakhinnāsmṛtimukhaḥ babhau
19. Then he appeared with a face characterized by extreme agitation, astonishment, distress, and a loss of memory, like the moon in the sky, whose death is imminent, upon seeing Rāhu.
ऐन्द्रजालिकमालोक्य प्रोवाचाथ हसन्निव ।
बभुं हिंसात्मकं दृष्ट्वा सर्परूपीव तक्षकः ॥ २० ॥
aindrajālikamālokya provācātha hasanniva ,
babhuṃ hiṃsātmakaṃ dṛṣṭvā sarparūpīva takṣakaḥ 20
20. aindrajālikam ālokya provāca atha hasan iva
babhum hiṃsātmakam dṛṣṭvā sarparūpī iva takṣakaḥ
20. atha aindrajālikam ālokya hasan iva provāca
hiṃsātmakam babhum dṛṣṭvā sarparūpī takṣakaḥ iva
20. Then, upon seeing the magician, he spoke as if smiling. He was like Takṣaka, in his serpent form, upon seeing a violent ape.
जाल्म जालजटालेन किमेतद्भवता कृतम् ।
येनास्पन्दप्रसन्नोऽब्धिः क्षणादेत्य प्रसन्नताम् ॥ २१ ॥
jālma jālajaṭālena kimetadbhavatā kṛtam ,
yenāspandaprasanno'bdhiḥ kṣaṇādetya prasannatām 21
21. jālma jālajaṭālena kim etat bhavatā kṛtam yena
aspandaprasannaḥ abdhiḥ kṣaṇāt etya prasannatām
21. jālma jālajaṭālena bhavatā etat kim kṛtam yena
aspandaprasannaḥ abdhiḥ kṣaṇāt prasannatām etya
21. O fool, with matted hair like a net! What is this that has been done by you, by which the ocean - (though it is usually) motionless and clear - has instantly attained a (new) state of clarity?
चित्रं चित्रा हि देवस्य पदार्थशतशक्तयः ।
सुशक्तमपि मे चित्तं याभिर्मोहे निवेशितम् ॥ २२ ॥
citraṃ citrā hi devasya padārthaśataśaktayaḥ ,
suśaktamapi me cittaṃ yābhirmohe niveśitam 22
22. citram citrāḥ hi devasya padārthaśataśaktayaḥ
suśaktam api me cittam yābhiḥ mohe niveśitam
22. hi devasya padārthaśataśaktayaḥ citrāḥ citram
yābhiḥ me suśaktam api cittam mohe niveśitam
22. It is truly astonishing how manifold are the hundreds of powers (śakti) of the deity, by which even my very strong mind has been thrown into delusion.
क्व वयं लोकपर्यायकृतान्तपदवेदिनः ।
क्व मनोमोहदायिन्यो वितताः प्रकृतापदः ॥ २३ ॥
kva vayaṃ lokaparyāyakṛtāntapadavedinaḥ ,
kva manomohadāyinyo vitatāḥ prakṛtāpadaḥ 23
23. kva vayam loka-paryāya-kṛtānta-pada-vedinaḥ |
kva manaḥ-moha-dāyinyaḥ vitatāḥ prākṛtāpadaḥ ||
23. vayam loka-paryāya-kṛtānta-pada-vedinaḥ kva
manaḥ-moha-dāyinyaḥ vitatāḥ prākṛtāpadaḥ kva
23. How can we, who comprehend the ultimate state (mokṣa) of the cycles of existence (saṃsāra), be compared to the widespread, inherent calamities originating from nature (prakṛti) that cause mental delusion?
अप्यभ्यस्तमहाज्ञानं मनस्तिष्ठति देहके ।
कदाचिन्मोहमादत्ते क्षणं मतिमतामपि ॥ २४ ॥
apyabhyastamahājñānaṃ manastiṣṭhati dehake ,
kadācinmohamādatte kṣaṇaṃ matimatāmapi 24
24. api abhyasta-mahā-jñānam manaḥ tiṣṭhati dehake
| kadācit moham ādatte kṣaṇam matimatām api ||
24. api abhyasta-mahā-jñānam manaḥ dehake tiṣṭhati
matimatām api kadācit kṣaṇam moham ādatte
24. Even a mind (manas) well-versed in profound knowledge, residing within the body, can sometimes, even for a moment, succumb to delusion (moha) - even among the most intelligent.
इदमाश्चर्यमाख्यानं श्रूयतां रे सभासदः ।
मम शाम्बरिकेणेह यन्मुहूर्तं प्रदर्शितम् ॥ २५ ॥
idamāścaryamākhyānaṃ śrūyatāṃ re sabhāsadaḥ ,
mama śāmbarikeṇeha yanmuhūrtaṃ pradarśitam 25
25. idam āścaryam ākhyānam śrūyatām re sabhāsadaḥ |
mama śāmbarikeṇa iha yat muhūrtam pradarśitam ||
25. re sabhāsadaḥ,
idam āścaryam ākhyānam śrūyatām yat iha mama śāmbarikeṇa muhūrtam pradarśitam
25. O members of the assembly (sabhāsadas), listen to this astonishing account (ākhyāna) of what was shown to me here for a moment by a magician (śāmbarika)!
दृष्टवानहमेतस्मिन्बह्वीः कार्यदशाश्चलाः ।
मुहूर्तं प्रार्थितोऽध्वस्तशक्रसृष्टिरिवालजः ॥ २६ ॥
dṛṣṭavānahametasminbahvīḥ kāryadaśāścalāḥ ,
muhūrtaṃ prārthito'dhvastaśakrasṛṣṭirivālajaḥ 26
26. dṛṣṭavān aham etasmin bahvīḥ kārya-daśāḥ calāḥ |
muhūrtam prārthitaḥ adhvasta-śakra-sṛṣṭiḥ iva ālajaḥ ||
26. aham etasmin muhūrtam prārthitaḥ adhvasta-śakra-sṛṣṭiḥ ālajaḥ iva,
bahvīḥ calāḥ kārya-daśāḥ dṛṣṭavān
26. I witnessed within this illusion many fleeting circumstances, as if, having been requested for a moment, I was an "ālaja" (illusory creature) experiencing the destruction of an illusory world (śakra-sṛṣṭi).
इत्युक्त्वोन्मुखनेत्रेषु सभ्येषु स हसन्निव ।
राजा वर्णयितुं चित्रं वृत्तान्तमुपचक्रमे ॥ २७ ॥
ityuktvonmukhanetreṣu sabhyeṣu sa hasanniva ,
rājā varṇayituṃ citraṃ vṛttāntamupacakrame 27
27. iti uktvā unmukhanetreṣu sabhyeṣu sa hasan iva
rājā varṇayitum citram vṛttāntam upacakrame
27. iti uktvā,
unmukhanetreṣu sabhyeṣu saḥ rājā hasan iva citram vṛttāntam varṇayitum upacakrame
27. After saying this, as the assembly members looked up with expectant eyes, the king, as if smiling, began to describe the amazing story.
राजोवाच ।
इह विविधपदार्थसंकुलायां ह्रदनदपत्तनपर्वताकुलायाम् ।
कुलशिखरिसमुद्रसंकरायां भुवि विभवावलितोऽस्त्ययं प्रदेशः ॥ २८ ॥
rājovāca ,
iha vividhapadārthasaṃkulāyāṃ hradanadapattanaparvatākulāyām ,
kulaśikharisamudrasaṃkarāyāṃ bhuvi vibhavāvalito'styayaṃ pradeśaḥ 28
28. rājā uvāca iha vividhapadārthasaṃkulāyām
hradanadapattanaparvatākulāyām
kulaśikharisamudrasaṃkarāyām bhuvi
vibhavāvalitaḥ asti ayam pradeśaḥ
28. rājā uvāca.
iha vividhapadārthasaṃkulāyām,
hradanadapattanaparvatākulāyām,
kulaśikharisamudrasaṃkarāyām bhuvi,
ayam pradeśaḥ vibhavāvalitaḥ asti.
28. The king said: "On this earth, which teems with diverse things, abounds in lakes, rivers, cities, and mountains, and where great mountain ranges intermingle with oceans, there exists this particular region, adorned with great prosperity."
