इति हेमजटाधीशो लेभे पदमनुत्तमम् ।
विवेकाध्यवसायेन ब्राह्मण्यमिव गाधिजः ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
iti hemajaṭādhīśo lebhe padamanuttamam ,
vivekādhyavasāyena brāhmaṇyamiva gādhijaḥ 1

anuttamam vivekādhyavasāyena brāhmaṇyam iva gādhijaḥ

lebhe gādhijaḥ iva vivekādhyavasāyena brāhmaṇyam
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Thus, the lord of golden matted locks (Śuka) attained the supreme state, just as Gādhi's son (Viśvāmitra) attained the state of a Brahmin (brāhmaṇyam) through discrimination and firm resolve.
अनर्थाकारकार्यासु नासीच्चेष्टासु खेदवान् ।
भूयोभूयः प्रयुक्तासु दिनमालास्विवेश्वरः ॥ २ ॥
anarthākārakāryāsu nāsīcceṣṭāsu khedavān ,
bhūyobhūyaḥ prayuktāsu dinamālāsviveśvaraḥ 2
2. anarthākārakāryāsu na āsīt ceṣṭāsu khedavān
bhūyobhūyaḥ prayuktāsu dinamālāsu iva īśvaraḥ
2. khedavān na āsīt anarthākārakāryāsu ceṣṭāsu
īśvaraḥ iva bhūyobhūyaḥ prayuktāsu dinamālāsu
2. He was not distressed by actions that produce meaningless forms or results, just as the Lord (īśvara) is not wearied by the continuously recurring series of days.
ततःप्रभृति सोऽतिष्ठतसर्वदा विगतज्वरः ।
समासमे स्वके कार्ये जलौघाग्र इवाचलः ॥ ३ ॥
tataḥprabhṛti so'tiṣṭhatasarvadā vigatajvaraḥ ,
samāsame svake kārye jalaughāgra ivācalaḥ 3
3. tataḥprabhṛti saḥ atiṣṭhata sarvadā vigatajvaraḥ
samāsame svake kārye jalaughāgraḥ iva acalaḥ
3. tataḥprabhṛti saḥ vigatajvaraḥ sarvadā svake
kārye samāsame jalaughāgraḥ acalaḥ iva atiṣṭhata
3. From that time onwards, he always remained free from anxiety, steadfast in his own duty (karma), whether in favorable or adverse circumstances, like a mountain standing firm against the onslaught of a flood.
हर्षामर्षविनिर्मुक्तः प्रत्यहं कार्यमाहरन् ।
उदारगम्भीरवपुर्जहाराम्बुनिधेः श्रियम् ॥ ४ ॥
harṣāmarṣavinirmuktaḥ pratyahaṃ kāryamāharan ,
udāragambhīravapurjahārāmbunidheḥ śriyam 4
4. harṣāmarṣavinirmuktaḥ pratyaham kāryam āharan
udāragambhīravapuḥ jahāra ambunidheḥ śriyam
4. harṣāmarṣavinirmuktaḥ pratyaham kāryam āharan
udāragambhīravapuḥ ambunidheḥ śriyam jahāra
4. Free from both elation and resentment, he performed his duties daily. With a noble and profound demeanor, he surpassed the very splendor of the ocean.
सुषुप्तपदधर्मिण्या चित्तवृत्त्या व्यराजत ।
निष्कम्पया प्रकाशिन्या दीपः स्वशिखयेव सः ॥ ५ ॥
suṣuptapadadharmiṇyā cittavṛttyā vyarājata ,
niṣkampayā prakāśinyā dīpaḥ svaśikhayeva saḥ 5
5. suṣuptapadadharmiṇyā cittavṛttyā vyarājata
niṣkampayā prakāśinyā dīpaḥ svaśikhayā iva saḥ
5. saḥ suṣuptapadadharmiṇyā niṣkampayā prakāśinyā
cittavṛttyā svaśikhayā dīpaḥ iva vyarājata
5. He shone forth with a mental state (cittavṛtti) that possessed the stillness of deep sleep, unmoving and luminous, just as a lamp shines with its own steady flame.
न निर्घृणो दयावान्नो न द्वन्द्वी नाथ मत्सरी ।
न सुधीर्नासुधीर्नार्थी नानर्थी स बभूव ह ॥ ६ ॥
na nirghṛṇo dayāvānno na dvandvī nātha matsarī ,
na sudhīrnāsudhīrnārthī nānarthī sa babhūva ha 6
6. na nirghṛṇaḥ dayāvān na u na dvandvī na atha matsarī na
sudhīḥ na asudhīḥ na arthī na anarthī saḥ babhūva ha
6. saḥ ha na nirghṛṇaḥ babhūva na u dayāvān na dvandvī na
atha matsarī na sudhīḥ na asudhīḥ na arthī na anarthī
6. He was neither cruel nor compassionate; neither contentious nor envious. Indeed, he became neither wise nor unwise, nor was he one who desired objects, nor one who lacked purpose. (He transcended these pairs of opposites.)
समदर्शनया नित्यं वृत्त्याऽचापलधीरया ।
अन्तःशीतलया रेजे परिपूर्णार्णवेन्दुवत् ॥ ७ ॥
samadarśanayā nityaṃ vṛttyā'cāpaladhīrayā ,
antaḥśītalayā reje paripūrṇārṇavenduvat 7
7. samadarśanayā nityam vṛttyā acāpaladhīrayā
antaḥśītalayā reje paripūrṇārṇavenduvat
7. (saḥ) nityam samadarśanayā acāpaladhīrayā
antaḥśītalayā vṛttyā paripūrṇārṇavenduvat reje
7. He shone splendidly, always, with an equanimous outlook, a steady and unwavering disposition, and inner serenity, like the full moon reflected in a calm ocean.
सर्वं चित्तत्त्वकलनं जगदित्यवलोक्य सः ।
प्रशान्तसुखदुःखश्रीस्तस्य पूर्णा मतिर्बभौ ॥ ८ ॥
sarvaṃ cittattvakalanaṃ jagadityavalokya saḥ ,
praśāntasukhaduḥkhaśrīstasya pūrṇā matirbabhau 8
8. sarvam cittattvakalanam jagat iti avalokya saḥ
praśāntasukhaduḥkhaśrīḥ tasya pūrṇā matiḥ babhau
8. saḥ sarvam jagat cittattvakalanam iti avalokya
praśāntasukhaduḥkhaśrīḥ tasya pūrṇā matiḥ babhau
8. Having perceived the entire world as merely a manifestation of pure consciousness (cittattva), his state regarding joy and sorrow became tranquil, and his understanding (mati) shone full.
उल्लसन्विकसन्पूर्णस्तिष्ठन्गच्छन्विशन्स्वपन् ।
अभूत्समसमाधिस्थः प्रबुद्धश्चिल्लयं गतः ॥ ९ ॥
ullasanvikasanpūrṇastiṣṭhangacchanviśansvapan ,
abhūtsamasamādhisthaḥ prabuddhaścillayaṃ gataḥ 9
9. ullasan vikasan pūrṇaḥ tiṣṭhan gacchan viśan svapan
abhūt samasamādhisthaḥ prabuddhaḥ citlayam gataḥ
9. (saḥ) ullasan vikasan pūrṇaḥ tiṣṭhan gacchan viśan
svapan samasamādhisthaḥ prabuddhaḥ citlayam gataḥ abhūt
9. Shining forth, expanding, and always remaining complete, whether standing, moving, entering, or sleeping, he became established in a state of perfect meditative absorption (samādhi). He was awakened, having reached dissolution into pure consciousness (citlaya).
स कुर्वन्विगतासङ्गं राज्यं राजीवलोचनः ।
अतिष्ठदक्षताकारो भूरिवर्षशतान्यथ ॥ १० ॥
sa kurvanvigatāsaṅgaṃ rājyaṃ rājīvalocanaḥ ,
atiṣṭhadakṣatākāro bhūrivarṣaśatānyatha 10
10. sa kurvan vigatāsaṅgam rājyam rājīvalocanaḥ
atiṣṭhat akṣatākāraḥ bhūrivarṣaśatāni atha
10. atha saḥ rājīvalocanaḥ vigatāsaṅgam rājyam
kurvan akṣatākāraḥ bhūrivarṣaśatāni atiṣṭhat
10. Then, the lotus-eyed one (Rājīvalocana), while performing his kingship without any attachment, remained with an unimpaired physique for many hundreds of years.
संनिवेशमिमं देहनामकं तदनु स्वयम् ।
स जहौ तेजसाक्रान्तो रूपं हिमकणो यथा ॥ ११ ॥
saṃniveśamimaṃ dehanāmakaṃ tadanu svayam ,
sa jahau tejasākrānto rūpaṃ himakaṇo yathā 11
11. saṃniveśam imam dehanāmakam tadanu svayam saḥ
jahau tejasā ākrāntaḥ rūpam himakaṇaḥ yathā
11. tadanu saḥ tejasā ākrāntaḥ svayam imam dehanāmakam saṃniveśam rūpam jahau,
himakaṇaḥ yathā.
11. Then, pervaded by his inherent spiritual radiance (tejas), he himself abandoned this construct called the body, just as a dewdrop relinquishes its form.
विवेश परमाद्यन्तकारणं कारणेश्वरम् ।
प्रज्ञया सरितां वारि परिपूर्णमिवाम्बुधिम् ॥ १२ ॥
viveśa paramādyantakāraṇaṃ kāraṇeśvaram ,
prajñayā saritāṃ vāri paripūrṇamivāmbudhim 12
12. viveśa paramādyantakāraṇam kāraṇeśvaram
prajñayā saritām vāri paripūrṇam iva ambudhim
12. saḥ (implied) prajñayā paramādyantakāraṇam kāraṇeśvaram viveśa,
saritām vāri paripūrṇam ambudhim iva.
12. With his wisdom (prajñā), he entered the Supreme, who is the ultimate origin and end, the Lord of all causes, just as the waters of rivers merge into a fully encompassing ocean.
अधिगतविमलैकरूपतेजा विजनदशां समुपेत्य शान्तशोकः ।
अलमभवदसौ परस्वरूपं घटखमिवाम्बरसंयुतं महात्मा ॥ १३ ॥
adhigatavimalaikarūpatejā vijanadaśāṃ samupetya śāntaśokaḥ ,
alamabhavadasau parasvarūpaṃ ghaṭakhamivāmbarasaṃyutaṃ mahātmā 13
13. adhigatavimalaikarūpatejā
vijanadaśām samupetya śāntaśokaḥ alam
abhavat asau parasvarūpam
ghaṭakham iva ambarasaṃyutam mahātmā
13. adhigatavimalaikarūpatejāḥ vijanadaśām samupetya śāntaśokaḥ asau mahātmā,
ghaṭakham ambarasaṃyutam iva,
parasvarūpam alam abhavat.
13. This great soul (mahātman), whose radiance (tejas) had attained a pure, singular form, having entered a state of solitude, and having become free from sorrow, became completely absorbed into the supreme reality (parasvarūpa), just as the space within a jar merges with the all-pervading sky.
