श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
किरातमण्डले तस्मिन्ये भवन्ति महीभृतः ।
तैस्तैः सह परा मैत्री तस्याः समभिजायते ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
kirātamaṇḍale tasminye bhavanti mahībhṛtaḥ ,
taistaiḥ saha parā maitrī tasyāḥ samabhijāyate 1
1. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca kirātamaṇḍale tasmin ye bhavanti
mahībhṛtaḥ taiḥ taiḥ saha parā maitrī tasyāḥ samabhijāyate
1. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca.
tasmin kirātamaṇḍale ye mahībhṛtaḥ bhavanti,
taiḥ taiḥ saha tasyāḥ parā maitrī samabhijāyate.
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: In that Kirāta region, a supreme friendship develops between her and the various kings who reside there.
सर्वास्तत्र महोत्पातान्पिशाचादिभयान्यपि ।
रोगांश्च योगसंसिद्धा निवारयति राक्षसी ॥ २ ॥
sarvāstatra mahotpātānpiśācādibhayānyapi ,
rogāṃśca yogasaṃsiddhā nivārayati rākṣasī 2
2. sarvāḥ tatra mahotpātān piśāca-ādi-bhayāni
api rogān ca yoga-samsiddhā nivārayati rākṣasī
2. tatra yoga-samsiddhā rākṣasī sarvāḥ mahotpātān,
piśāca-ādi-bhayāni api,
ca rogān nivārayati.
2. There, the female demon (Rākṣasī), perfected in the practice of yoga (yoga), averts all great calamities, fears caused by ghouls and other entities, and diseases.
बहुवर्षगणेनैषा ध्यानाद्विरतिमागता ।
तत्रागत्य समस्तांस्तान्वध्याञ्जन्तून्सुसंचितान् ॥ ३ ॥
bahuvarṣagaṇenaiṣā dhyānādviratimāgatā ,
tatrāgatya samastāṃstānvadhyāñjantūnsusaṃcitān 3
3. bahuvarsagaṇena eṣā dhyānāt viratim āgatā tatra
āgatya samastān tān vadhyān jantūn susamcitān
3. eṣā bahuvarsagaṇena dhyānāt viratim āgatā.
tatra āgatya,
samastān tān vadhyān susamcitān jantūn.

3. She (the Rākṣasī), after many years, emerged from her deep meditation (dhyāna). Having arrived there, she found all those creatures, accumulated and fit for sacrifice (vadhyān)...
अद्यापि तत्र ये वध्यास्ते तदर्थं महीभुजा ।
नीयन्ते मित्रसन्माने के हि नाध्यवसायिनः ॥ ४ ॥
adyāpi tatra ye vadhyāste tadarthaṃ mahībhujā ,
nīyante mitrasanmāne ke hi nādhyavasāyinaḥ 4
4. adya api tatra ye vadhyāḥ te tat-artham mahībhujā
nīyante mitra-sanmāne ke hi na adhyavasāyinaḥ
4. adya api tatra ye vadhyāḥ,
te mahībhujā tat-artham mitra-sanmāne nīyante.
hi ke na adhyavasāyinaḥ?
4. Even today, those creatures there that are still designated for sacrifice are brought by the king for her sake, as a gesture of honoring a friend. Indeed, who would not be resolute in such an endeavor?
तस्यां ध्याननिषण्णायां किरातजनमण्डले ।
अनायान्त्यां चिरं कालं जनैर्दोषप्रशान्तये ॥ ५ ॥
tasyāṃ dhyānaniṣaṇṇāyāṃ kirātajanamaṇḍale ,
anāyāntyāṃ ciraṃ kālaṃ janairdoṣapraśāntaye 5
5. tasyām dhyānaniṣaṇṇāyām kirātajanamaṇḍale
anāyāntyām ciram kālam janaiḥ doṣapraśāntaye
5. tasyām dhyānaniṣaṇṇāyām kirātajanamaṇḍale
ciram kālam janaiḥ doṣapraśāntaye anāyāntyām
5. When she remained absorbed in meditation (dhyāna) in the region of the Kirata people, and did not appear for a long time for the appeasement of faults by the people...
सा देवी कन्दरानाम्नी मङ्गलेतरनामिका ।
संप्रतिष्ठापिता मूर्त्या पुरे गगनकोटरे ॥ ६ ॥
sā devī kandarānāmnī maṅgaletaranāmikā ,
saṃpratiṣṭhāpitā mūrtyā pure gaganakoṭare 6
6. sā devī kandarānāmnī maṅgaletaranāmikā
sampratiṣṭhāpitā mūrtyā pure gaganakoṭare
6. sā devī kandarānāmnī maṅgaletaranāmikā
mūrtyā gaganakoṭare pure sampratiṣṭhāpitā
6. That goddess, named Kandarā, whose name was inauspicious, was then properly installed in the form of an idol in the city of Gaganakoṭara.
ततःप्रभृति तत्रत्यो यो यो भवति भूमिपः ।
स कन्दरां भगवतीं प्रतिष्ठापयति स्वयम् ॥ ७ ॥
tataḥprabhṛti tatratyo yo yo bhavati bhūmipaḥ ,
sa kandarāṃ bhagavatīṃ pratiṣṭhāpayati svayam 7
7. tataḥprabhṛti tatratyaḥ yaḥ yaḥ bhavati bhūmipaḥ
sa kandarām bhagavatīm pratiṣṭhāpayati svayam
7. tataḥprabhṛti yaḥ yaḥ tatratyaḥ bhūmipaḥ bhavati
saḥ bhagavatīm kandarām svayam pratiṣṭhāpayati
7. From that time onwards, whichever ruler (bhūmipa) belonged to that place, he himself would install the venerable goddess Kandarā.
यः कन्दराप्रतिष्ठां च न करोति नृपाधमः ।
तस्योपतापनिचयाः प्रजा निघ्नन्ति यत्नतः ॥ ८ ॥
yaḥ kandarāpratiṣṭhāṃ ca na karoti nṛpādhamaḥ ,
tasyopatāpanicayāḥ prajā nighnanti yatnataḥ 8
8. yaḥ kandarāpratiṣṭhām ca na karoti nṛpādhamaḥ
tasya upatāpanicayāḥ prajā nighnanti yatnataḥ
8. yaḥ nṛpādhamaḥ kandarāpratiṣṭhām ca na karoti,
tasya prajā upatāpanicayāḥ yatnataḥ nighnanti
8. And whichever vile king (nṛpādhama) does not perform the installation of Kandarā, his subjects (themselves becoming) a host of afflictions, diligently destroy him.
तत्पूजनादवाप्नोति जनस्तन्निखिलं फलम् ।
स्ववासनावशोच्छूनमनर्थं यात्यपूजनात् ॥ ९ ॥
tatpūjanādavāpnoti janastannikhilaṃ phalam ,
svavāsanāvaśocchūnamanarthaṃ yātyapūjanāt 9
9. tatpūjanāt avāpnoti janaḥ tat nikhilam phalam
| svavāsanāvaśocchūnamanartham yāti apūjanāt ||
9. janaḥ tatpūjanāt tat nikhilam phalam avāpnoti
apūjanāt svavāsanāvaśocchūnamanartham yāti
9. By her worship, a person obtains all those desired results. However, from not worshipping her, one becomes swollen by their own ingrained tendencies (vāsanā) and helplessness, and thus encounters misfortune.
वध्यलोकोपहारेण सा देवी परिपूज्यते ।
प्रतिमा सा स्थिताद्यापि चित्रस्था फलदायिनी ॥ १० ॥
vadhyalokopahāreṇa sā devī paripūjyate ,
pratimā sā sthitādyāpi citrasthā phaladāyinī 10
10. vadhylokopahāreṇa sā devī paripūjyate | pratimā
sā sthitā adya api citrasthā phaladāyinī ||
10. sā devī vadhylokopahāreṇa paripūjyate sā
pratimā citrasthā adya api sthitā phaladāyinī
10. That goddess is duly worshipped with offerings of sacrificial people. That image of her still exists today, depicted in a painting, and is a giver of results.
सकलकोमलमङ्गलकारिणी कवलिताखिलवध्यमहाजना ।
जयति सात्र किरातजनास्पदे परमबोधवती चिरदेवता ॥ ११ ॥
sakalakomalamaṅgalakāriṇī kavalitākhilavadhyamahājanā ,
jayati sātra kirātajanāspade paramabodhavatī ciradevatā 11
11. sakalakomalamangalakāriṇī kavalitākhilavadhyamahājanā |
jayati sā atra kirātajanāspade paramabodhavatī ciradevatā ||
11. sā ciradevatā sakalakomalamangalakāriṇī kavalitākhilavadhyamahājanā
paramabodhavatī atra kirātajanāspade jayati
11. She, that ancient goddess, who brings all tender auspiciousness and has devoured all the great sacrificial people, triumphs here in this abode of the Kirāta people, endowed with supreme knowledge.
