अथ तां दयितां दृष्ट्वा विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनः ।
शिखिध्वज उवाचेदमाश्चर्याकुलया गिरा ॥ १ ॥

atha tām dayitām dṛṣṭvā,
vismaya-utphulla-locanaḥ śikhidhvajaḥ,

vismaya-utphulla-locanaḥ śikhidhvajaḥ,

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, seeing his beloved, Śikhidhvaja, with eyes wide open in wonder, spoke these words with a voice filled with astonishment.
का त्वमुत्पलपत्राक्षि कुतः प्राप्तासि सुन्दरि ।
किमिहासि कियत्कालं किमर्थमिह तिष्ठसि ॥ २ ॥

Who are you, O lotus-petal-eyed one? From where have you arrived, O beautiful one? What are you doing here? For how long have you been here, and for what purpose do you remain?
अङ्गेन व्यवहारेण स्मितेनानुनयेन च ।
मम जायाविलासेन तत्कलेवोपलक्ष्यसे ॥ ३ ॥

By your physical form, your demeanor, your smile, and your endearing persuasion, you are perceived as her very likeness, imbued with the charm (vilāsa) of my wife.
चूडालोवाच ।
एवमेव प्रभो विद्धि चूडालास्मि न संशयः ।
अकृत्रिमेण देहेन लब्धोऽस्यद्य मया स्वयम् ॥ ४ ॥
एवमेव प्रभो विद्धि चूडालास्मि न संशयः ।
अकृत्रिमेण देहेन लब्धोऽस्यद्य मया स्वयम् ॥ ४ ॥

cūḍālā uvāca evam eva prabho viddhi cūḍālā asmi na

cūḍālā uvāca prabho evam eva viddhi cūḍālā asmi na
saṃśayaḥ adya mayā akṛtrimeṇa dehena svayam labdhaḥ asi

Cūḍālā said: "O Lord, know this indeed: I am Cūḍālā, there is no doubt. Today, I have personally attained you with this natural body."
कुम्भादिदेहनिर्माणैस्त्वां बोधयितुमेव मे ।
प्रपञ्चः शतशाखत्वमिह यातो वनान्तरे ॥ ५ ॥

me tvām bodhayitum eva kumbhādidahanirmāṇaiḥ
prapañcaḥ vanāntare iha śataśākhatvam yātaḥ

It was solely to enlighten you that this elaborate display of creating bodies, starting with Kumbha's, branched out into a hundred forms here in this forest.
यदा राज्यं परित्यज्य मोहेन तपसे वनम् ।
त्वमागास्तत्प्रभृत्येव त्वद्बोधायाहमुद्यता ॥ ६ ॥

yadā rājyaṃ parityajya mohena tapase vanam ,
tvamāgāstatprabhṛtyeva tvadbodhāyāhamudyatā 6

āgāḥ tatprabhṛti eva tvadbodhāya aham udyatā

āgāḥ tatprabhṛti eva aham tvadbodhāya udyatā

From the very moment you, deluded by attachment (moha), abandoned your kingdom and came to the forest for spiritual austerities (tapas), I became engaged in enlightening you.
अनेन कुम्भदेहेन मयैव त्वं विबोधितः ।
कुम्भादिदेहनिर्माणं त्वां बोधयितुमेव मे ॥ ७ ॥
कुम्भादिदेहनिर्माणं त्वां बोधयितुमेव मे ॥ ७ ॥
anena kumbhadehena mayaiva tvaṃ vibodhitaḥ ,
kumbhādidehanirmāṇaṃ tvāṃ bodhayitumeva me 7
kumbhādidehanirmāṇaṃ tvāṃ bodhayitumeva me 7

anena kumbhadehna mayā eva tvām vibodhitaḥ
kumbhādidahanirmāṇam tvām bodhayitum eva me
kumbhādidahanirmāṇam tvām bodhayitum eva me

anena kumbhadehna mayā eva tvām vibodhitaḥ
kumbhādidahanirmāṇam me tvām bodhayitum eva
kumbhādidahanirmāṇam me tvām bodhayitum eva

It was by this very body of Kumbha that you were enlightened by me. Indeed, the creation of bodies, starting with Kumbha's, was undertaken by me solely to enlighten you.
मायया न तु कुम्भादि किंचित्सत्यं महीपते ।
अथो विदितवेद्यस्त्वं ध्यानेनैतदखण्डितम् ॥ ८ ॥
अथो विदितवेद्यस्त्वं ध्यानेनैतदखण्डितम् ॥ ८ ॥
māyayā na tu kumbhādi kiṃcitsatyaṃ mahīpate ,
atho viditavedyastvaṃ dhyānenaitadakhaṇḍitam 8
atho viditavedyastvaṃ dhyānenaitadakhaṇḍitam 8

māyayā na tu kumbha-ādi kiñcit satyam mahīpate
atho vidita-vedyaḥ tvam dhyānena etat akhaṇḍitam
atho vidita-vedyaḥ tvam dhyānena etat akhaṇḍitam
8.
mahīpate māyayā kumbha-ādi kiñcit tu satyam na
atho vidita-vedyaḥ tvam etat dhyānena akhaṇḍitam
atho vidita-vedyaḥ tvam etat dhyānena akhaṇḍitam
8.
O king, nothing like a pot, etc., is truly real due to illusion (māyā). Therefore, you, who have understood what is to be known, perceive this reality as undivided through meditation (dhyāna).
सर्वं पश्यसि तत्त्वज्ञ ध्यानेनाश्ववलोकय ।
अथ चूडालयेत्युक्तो बद्ध्वा परिकरं नृपः ॥ ९ ॥

atha cūḍālayā iti uktaḥ baddhvā parikaram nṛpaḥ

tattvajña tvam sarvam dhyānena paśyasi āśu avalokaya
atha cūḍālayā iti uktaḥ nṛpaḥ parikaram baddhvā
atha cūḍālayā iti uktaḥ nṛpaḥ parikaram baddhvā
9.
O knower of reality (tattvajña), you perceive everything through meditation (dhyāna). Now, quickly observe! Then, having been addressed thus by Cūḍālā, the king fastened his girdle (parikara).
आत्मोदन्तं विशेषेण ध्यानेनामलमैक्षत ।
अभिराज्यपरित्यागाच्चूडालादर्शनावधि ॥ १० ॥

ātma-udantam viśeṣeṇa dhyānena amalam aikṣata
abhirājya-parityāgāt cūḍālā-darśana-avadhi

saḥ viśeṣeṇa amalam ātma-udantam dhyānena
abhirājya-parityāgāt cūḍālā-darśana-avadhi aikṣata
abhirājya-parityāgāt cūḍālā-darśana-avadhi aikṣata
10.
He clearly perceived his own life story (ātma-udanta) in detail through pure meditation (dhyāna), covering the period from his abandonment of the kingdom up to his meeting with Cūḍālā.
सर्वं मुहूर्तध्यानेन चात्मोदन्तं ददर्श सः ।
आराज्यसंपरित्यागाद्वर्तमानक्षणक्रमम् ॥ ११ ॥

sarvaṃ muhūrtadhyānena cātmodantaṃ dadarśa saḥ ,

saḥ ca muhūrta-dhyānena sarvam ātma-udantam
ā-rājya-samparityāgāt vartamāna-kṣaṇa-kramam dadarśa
ā-rājya-samparityāgāt vartamāna-kṣaṇa-kramam dadarśa
11.
And he, through meditation (dhyāna) for just a moment, perceived his entire life story (ātma-udanta), from the complete renunciation of his kingdom (samparityāga) up to the present sequence of moments.
सर्वमालोक्य भूपालो विरराम समाधितः ।
समाधिविरतो हर्षविकासिनयनाम्बुजः ॥ १२ ॥

Having perceived everything, the king ceased from his deep meditation (samādhi). Released from that meditation, his lotus-like eyes blossomed with joy.
विसार्य तरसा बाहू पुलकोज्ज्वलतां गतौ ।
गलदङ्गं घनस्नेहं मुञ्चद्बाष्पं स्फुरत्स्पृहम् ॥ १३ ॥

As he quickly extended his arms, which had become radiant with horripilation (pulaka), his body melted with profound affection, shedding tears, and throbbing with longing.
आलिलिङ्ग चिरं कान्तां नकुलो नकुलीमिव ।
तयोरालिङ्गने तस्मिंस्तत्र भावो बभूव यः ॥ १४ ॥

āliliṅga ciraṃ kāntāṃ nakulo nakulīmiva ,

14.
He long embraced his beloved, just as a male mongoose (nakula) embraces a female mongoose (nakulī). The emotion (bhāva) that arose there in their embrace...
न स वासुकिजिह्नाभिर्वक्तुं हर्षेण शक्यते ।
दिविस्थाविव पङ्केन कृताविव मिलत्तनू ॥ १५ ॥

na sa vāsukijihnābhirvaktuṃ harṣeṇa śakyate ,

na sa vāsukijihnābhiḥ vaktum harṣeṇa śakyate

sa na vāsukijihnābhiḥ harṣeṇa vaktum śakyate (tau) divisthāu iva,

That [emotion] cannot be described, even with joy, by the many tongues of Vāsuki. They were like two celestial beings, as if fashioned from mud, whose bodies merged.
शैलाविव समुत्कीर्णौ श्लिष्टावास्तां चिरं प्रियौ ।
मुहूर्तेन गलद्धर्मजलौ पुलकपीवरौ ॥ १६ ॥

śailāviva samutkīrṇau śliṣṭāvāstāṃ ciraṃ priyau ,

The lovers remained embraced for a long time, like two mountains carved and joined. Soon, their bodies became plump with goosebumps and were dripping with sweat.
बाहू विश्लथतामीषन्निन्यतुस्तौ शनैः प्रियौ ।
अमृतापूर्णहृदयौ संशून्यहृदयोपमौ ॥ १७ ॥

Those two lovers, their hearts filled with nectar yet feeling as if utterly empty (of other desires), slowly loosened their arms a little.
उन्मुक्तभुजमास्तां तावलक्षस्थितलोचनम् ।
घनानन्दक्षणं स्थित्वा तूष्णीं प्रणयपेशलम् ॥ १८ ॥

After remaining for a moment of profound bliss, silent and tender with love, they stayed with loosened arms and their gaze fixed blankly.
कान्तां चिबुकसंलग्नकरः प्रोवाच भूपतिः ।
अत्यन्तमधुरस्निग्धः कान्तः स्वकुलयोषिताम् ॥ १९ ॥

The king, who was exceedingly sweet and tender and beloved by the women of his own family, spoke to his beloved, with his hand resting on her chin.
पुण्यश्च रतिनिष्पन्दः स्वादुर्नामामृतादपि ।
कियत्प्रमाणस्तन्वंग्या त्वया बालेन्दुमुग्धया ॥ २० ॥

tanvaṅgyā bālendu-mugdhyā tvayā puṇyaḥ ca
rati-niṣpandaḥ svāduḥ nāma amṛtāt api kiyat-pramāṇaḥ
rati-niṣpandaḥ svāduḥ nāma amṛtāt api kiyat-pramāṇaḥ
20.
O slender-bodied one, enchanting like the crescent moon, how immeasurable is the merit (puṇya), the tranquil delight (rati), and the sweetness – indeed, sweeter even than nectar – that emanates from you?
अनुभूतश्चिरं क्लेशो भर्तुरर्थेन दारुणः ।
एवं दुरुत्तरात्तस्मात्संसारकुहरादहम् ॥ २१ ॥

anubhūtaściraṃ kleśo bharturarthena dāruṇaḥ ,

All of them (the goddesses mentioned) appear delicate and insignificant before the splendor of your virtues, O slender-bodied one. Indeed, qualities like intellect, prosperity, radiance, forgiveness, friendship, compassion, and others also fade, O beautiful one.

Resolute and virtuous wives (kulastrī) rescue a fallen man. Scriptures, their meanings, spiritual teachers (guru), sacred incantations (mantra), and similar things are not capable of saving [him] in the same way.

सखा भ्राता सुहृद्भृत्यो गुरुर्मित्रं धने सुखम् ॥ २७ ॥

Just as these affectionate wives (kulayoṣit) of their husbands [are like]: a friend, a brother, a benefactor, a servant, a spiritual teacher (guru), a companion, and a source of happiness in wealth...

For the husband, a virtuous wife (kulāṅganā) is everything: she is like scripture (śāstram), a sanctuary (āyatanam), and a servant (dāsaḥ). Therefore, virtuous wives (kulāṅganāḥ) should always be honored with every effort.
लोकद्वयसुखं सम्यक्सर्वं यासु प्रतिष्ठितम् ।

In virtuous women (yāsu), all happiness for both worlds (lokadvayasukham) is truly established. Such is the achievement of a desireless one (niricchāyāḥ) who has crossed (prayātāyāḥ) to the other shore (pāram) of the ocean of existence (saṃsāra).
कथमस्योपकारस्य करिष्ये ते प्रतिक्रियाः ।
मन्ये कुलाङ्गनां लोके लोके सर्वास्त्वयाधुना ॥ ३० ॥

manye loke loke adhunā tvayā sarvāḥ.

How shall I make a return (pratikriyāḥ) to you (te) for this favor (asya upakārasya)? O virtuous wife (kulāṅganām), I consider that in every world (loke loke), all (sarvāḥ, other women) are now surpassed by you (tvayā adhunā).
नारीसौजन्यचर्चासु व्यपदेश्या भविष्यसि ।
त्वां निर्मितवतो धातुर्गुणजालातिशायिनीम् ॥ ३१ ॥

You will be exemplary in discussions about women's gentleness. Such is the artistry of the Creator (dhātuḥ) who fashioned you (tvām) as one surpassing the multitude of all good qualities (guṇajālātiśāyinīm).

I believe that women, led by Arundhati, are certainly very angry. O chaste and virtuous lady (sati), you are a jewel-casket containing the gems of beauty, kindness, and other excellent qualities.
एहि मे त्वद्गुणोत्कस्य पुनरालिङ्गनं कुरु ।
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा मृगशावाक्षीं चूडालां तां शिखिध्वजः ॥ ३३ ॥

"Come to me, eager for your excellent qualities, and embrace me again!" Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having spoken thus, Śikhidhvaja (Śikhidhvaja) embraced that Chudalā (Chudalā), whose eyes resembled those of a fawn.

Cūḍālā: "Do you, perhaps, inwardly smile at that instability of the mind's condition? Those are perceptions of trivial desires and misguided imaginations born of resolves."

"O all-pervading one, how do you perceive the past sequence of bodily actions?" Śikhidhvaja said: "O you whose beautiful eyes are like the essence of a garland of blue lotuses full of fresh flowers."
त्वमेव यस्य यस्यान्तस्तत्तस्याहमुपास्थितः ।
निरीहोऽस्मि निरंशोऽस्मि नभःस्वच्छोऽस्मि निस्पृहः ॥ ४२ ॥

In whosoever's inner being you yourself are, in that person I am present. I am free from desires, I am without parts, I am as pure as the sky, I am free from longing.

I am peaceful, I am of the nature of true reality (artha). For a long time, I have been established in my essential self (ātman). I have reached that state where the mind (citta) follows a single path.
प्रतिषेधन्ति सहसा न यां हरिहरादयः ।
नकिंचिन्मात्रचिन्मात्रनिष्ठोऽस्मि स्वस्थ आस्थितः ॥ ४४ ॥

hariharādayaḥ na yām sahasā pratiṣedhanti asmi
nakiṃcinmātracinmātraniṣṭhaḥ svasthaḥ āsthitaḥ

I am established in that state of mere consciousness (cinmātra) that is devoid of any specific thing, a state that even Hari (Viṣṇu), Hara (Śiva), and others cannot suddenly obstruct. I remain abiding in my true self (svastha).
भ्रमेणाहं विमुक्तोऽस्मि संसारेणालिलोचने ।
न तुष्टोस्मि न खिन्नोऽस्मि नायमस्मि न चेतरत् ॥ ४५ ॥

O beautiful-eyed one, I am freed from illusion and from the cycle of transmigration (saṃsāra). I am neither satisfied nor distressed. I am neither this nor that other [thing].

O beautiful one, I am neither gross nor subtle, and I am indeed truth (satya). I am like that [light] which, having emanated from a radiant orb (tejobimba), does not fall (or adhere) upon a wall.
क्षयातिशयमुक्तेन प्रकाशेनास्मि वै समः ।
शान्तोस्मि साम्यं नेतास्मि स्वस्थोस्मि विगताशयः ॥ ४७ ॥

I am indeed like that light (prakāśa) which is freed from diminution and augmentation. I am peaceful (śānta), I embody equanimity (sāmya), I am established in my true self (svastha), and I am free from all intentions and desires (vigatāśaya).
परिनिर्वाण एवास्मि सदृशोऽस्मि पतिव्रते ।

O chaste wife, I am indeed in a state of complete liberation (nirvāṇa). I am like that. Whatever I am, that alone I am; I cannot speak of anything else.
तरङ्गतरलापाङ्गे गुरुस्त्वं मे नमोऽस्तु ते ।
प्रसादेन विशालाक्ष्यास्तीर्णोऽस्मि भवसागरात् ॥ ४९ ॥

O you whose glances are restless like waves, you are my spiritual teacher (guru); salutations to you. By the grace of the broad-eyed goddess, I have crossed beyond the ocean of worldly existence (saṃsāra).
पुनर्मलं न गृह्णामि शतध्मातसुवर्णवत् ।
शान्तः स्वस्थो मृदुर्यत्तो वीतरागो निरंशधीः ॥ ५० ॥

50.
I will not acquire impurity again, just like gold that has been purified a hundred times. I am peaceful, established in myself, gentle, self-controlled, free from all attachment, and my intellect is indivisible.

I am situated like space, transcending everything and all-pervading. Cūḍālā then said: 'O great being, O lord of my life, O beloved of my heart, when things are thus...'

प्रतिषेधं न जानामि न जानाम्यभिवाञ्छितम् ॥ ५२ ॥

O great-minded lord, tell me, what pleases you now? Śikhidhvaja said, 'I know neither what is prohibited nor what is desired.'

यद्यन्मतं ते सकलं तथास्त्वविकलं प्रिये ॥ ५३ ॥

O slender-bodied one, sometimes I understand whatever you do. O beloved, whatever your entire opinion is, let it be completely unimpaired.
न किंचिदनुसंधातुं जानाम्यम्बरसुन्दरः ।
यदेव किंचिज्जानासि तदेव कुरु सुन्दरि ॥ ५४ ॥

I, who am beautiful as the sky, do not know how to investigate anything. Whatever you know, O beautiful one, do that very thing.
तदेव धारयिष्यामि प्रतिबिम्बं यथा मणिः ।
चेतसा गलितेष्टेन यथाप्राप्तमनिन्दितम् ॥ ५५ ॥

I will accept that alone, just as a jewel holds a reflection. With a mind where all desired things are dissolved, I will accept whatever comes, without finding fault.

I neither praise nor criticize; whatever you desire, do that. Cūḍālā said: 'If it is so, O mighty-armed one, then listen carefully to my opinion.'
आकर्ण्य जीवन्मुक्तात्मस्तदेवाहर्तुमर्हसि ।
सर्वत्रैक्यावबोधेन मौर्ख्यक्षयभुवान्विताः ॥ ५७ ॥

O self (ātman) liberated while living, having heard (my opinion), you ought to adopt it. We (are those who) are endowed with the annihilation of ignorance, which arises from the realization of unity everywhere.

tāvat vayam niricchāḥ ākāśa-viśadāḥ saṃsthitāḥ

We are indeed established, free from desires and pure like the sky. Whatever (natural, spontaneous) inclination we have, that very same is our non-attachment (to desire).

abhyasate hi kaḥ cit-mātraḥ

Who among us here, being merely consciousness (cinmātra), engages in the pursuit of vital breaths (prāṇa)? Therefore, O best among persons (puruṣa), we are (ever-present, unchangeable) in the beginning, middle, and end.
शेषमेकं परित्यज्य त एवेमे स्थिता वयम् ।
राज्येन सांप्रतेनेमं कालं नीत्वा क्रमेण वै ॥ ६० ॥

O Master, we shall attain the state of bodilessness (videhatā) after some time. Śikhidhvaja said: 'O restless one (Taralā), tell me, what kind of beings are we in the beginning, middle, and end?'

Or, having abandoned the one remaining aspect, how indeed do we exist? Cūḍālā said: 'O best of kings, we are kings in the beginning, middle, and end.'

Having abandoned the one delusion (moha), we indeed become those (kings) again. Therefore, you, remaining seated on your own throne, be a king in your own city.

Indeed, I shall be your chief queen, a crest-jewel among beautiful women. May the city then be accompanied by its king, its inhabitants joyful, and its ever-new women dancing.

लसद्वल्ल्या समञ्जर्या रणत्पुष्पालिमालया ।

May that city, replete with banners, resounding with trumpets, and profusely scattering flowers, endure for a long time, adorned with shining creepers, lovely flower clusters, garlands of humming flower rows, and the splendor of spring's blossoming vines.

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Thus addressed by Chūḍālā, Śikhidhvaja, having laughed and being freed from anxiety, spoke sweet, unagitated words.

सिद्धभोगश्रियस्तासु निवसामि न किं प्रिये ॥ ६७ ॥

If that is so, O wide-eyed one, why should I not dwell, O beloved, among those perfected glories of enjoyment, which are under our own control in the celestial realm?

Cūḍālā said: "O King, I have no desire for enjoyments, nor for any powers or prosperity. My existence is simply as it is, governed by my own intrinsic nature (svabhāva), content with whatever comes my way."

यथास्थितमविक्षुब्धं तिष्ठामि स्वस्थचेष्टिता ॥ ६९ ॥

Heaven does not bring me happiness, nor does a kingdom, nor any ritual action. I remain undisturbed, in my natural state, conducting my affairs with a healthy and proper mindset.

सममेव पदे शान्ते तिष्ठामीह यथासुखम् ॥ ७० ॥

When the distinction of "this is happiness, this is not" – this pair of opposites – has ceased, I remain here, in a tranquil state of equality, as is comfortable.

युक्तमुक्तं विशालाक्षि त्वयैतत्समया धिया ।
को वार्थः किल राज्यस्य ग्रहे त्यागेऽपि वा भवेत् ॥ ७१ ॥

Śikhidhvaja said: "O wide-eyed one, you have spoken truly, with a balanced intellect. What indeed is the real purpose of a kingdom, whether in its acceptance or its renunciation?"
सुखदुःखदशाचिन्तां त्यक्त्वा विगतमत्सरम् ।
यथासंस्थानमेवेमौ तिष्ठावः स्वस्थतां गतौ ॥ ७२ ॥

Having abandoned all thought concerning the changing states of happiness and sorrow, and being free from envy, we both remain in our natural state, having attained inner tranquility.

Thus, through the narration of stories and pleasant conversation between those two beloved, long-married partners, the day there became short (passed quickly).

Then, having risen, those two irreproachable and duty-skilled individuals performed their daily routine as it presented itself; though they had longing, they were also free from it.

एकस्मिन्नेव शयने तैस्तैः प्रणयचेष्टितैः ।
सा व्यतीयाय रजनी तयोर्जीवद्विमुक्तयोः ॥ ७५ ॥

Disregarding even the attainment of heaven, they both remained on a single bed, their minds perfectly content. That night passed for those two who were liberated while living (jīvanmukta), filled with various expressions of affection.
तद्भोगमोक्षसुखमुत्तमयोः स्वय समाशंसतोः प्रणयवाक्यविलासगर्भम् ।
उत्कण्ठतां प्रणयिनोर्धियमानयन्ती दीर्घा मुहूर्तवदसौ रजनी जगाम ॥ ७६ ॥

That night, which seemed long yet passed like a moment, brought to the minds of the excellent lovers an intense longing, as they themselves eagerly anticipated the pleasure of enjoyment and liberation (mokṣa), imbued with delightful words of love.
