इति चिन्तयतस्तस्य शुक्रस्य पितुरग्रतः ।
जगामातितरां कालो बहुसंवत्सरात्मकः ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
iti cintayatastasya śukrasya pituragrataḥ ,
jagāmātitarāṃ kālo bahusaṃvatsarātmakaḥ 1
1. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca iti cintayataḥ tasya śukrasya pituḥ
agrataḥ jagāma atitaraṃ kālaḥ bahusaṃvatsarātmakaḥ
1. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca iti pituḥ agrataḥ tasya śukrasya cintayataḥ bahusaṃvatsarātmakaḥ kālaḥ atitaraṃ jagāma.
1. Shri Vasishtha said: As Shukra continued to ponder in his father's presence, a very long time, spanning many years, passed by.
अथ कालेन महता पवनातपजर्जरः ।
कायस्तस्य पपातोर्व्यां छिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः ॥ २ ॥
atha kālena mahatā pavanātapajarjaraḥ ,
kāyastasya papātorvyāṃ chinnamūla iva drumaḥ 2
2. atha kālena mahatā pavanātapa-jarjaraḥ kāyaḥ
tasya papāta urvyām chinnamūlaḥ iva drumaḥ
2. atha mahatā kālena,
pavanātapa-jarjaraḥ tasya kāyaḥ chinnamūlaḥ drumaḥ iva urvyām papāta.
2. Then, after a considerable period, his body, wasted away by wind and sun, fell to the earth like a tree whose roots have been severed.
मनस्तु चञ्चलाभोगं तासु तासु दशासु च ।
बभ्रामातिविचित्रासु वनराजिष्विवैणकः ॥ ३ ॥
manastu cañcalābhogaṃ tāsu tāsu daśāsu ca ,
babhrāmātivicitrāsu vanarājiṣvivaiṇakaḥ 3
3. manaḥ tu cañcalābhogaṃ tāsu tāsu daśāsu ca
babhrāma ativicitrāsu vanarājiṣu iva aiṇakaḥ
3. tu cañcalābhogaṃ manaḥ,
tāsu tāsu ca ativicitrāsu daśāsu,
vanarājiṣu iva aiṇakaḥ babhrāma.
3. But his mind, with its restless pursuit of experiences, wandered through all those exceedingly varied states, much like a deer roaming through diverse forest thickets.
भ्रान्तमुद्भ्रान्तमभितश्चक्रार्पितमिवाकुलम् ।
मनस्तस्य विशश्राम समङ्गासरितस्तटे ॥ ४ ॥
bhrāntamudbhrāntamabhitaścakrārpitamivākulam ,
manastasya viśaśrāma samaṅgāsaritastaṭe 4
4. bhrāntam udbhrāntam abhitaḥ cakrārpitam iva
ākulam manaḥ tasya viśaśrāma samaṅgāsaritataṭe
4. abhitaḥ bhrāntam udbhrāntam,
cakrārpitam iva ākulam tasya manaḥ samaṅgāsaritataṭe viśaśrāma.
4. Having thoroughly wandered and strayed in all directions, bewildered like an object spun on a wheel, his mind finally came to rest on the bank of the Samanga river.
अनन्तवृत्तान्तघनां पेलवां सुदृढामपि ।
तां संसृतिदशां शुक्रो विदेहोऽनुभवन्स्थितः ॥ ५ ॥
anantavṛttāntaghanāṃ pelavāṃ sudṛḍhāmapi ,
tāṃ saṃsṛtidaśāṃ śukro videho'nubhavansthitaḥ 5
5. anantavṛttāntaghanām pelavām sudṛḍhām api tām
saṃsṛtidaśām śukraḥ videhaḥ anubhavan sthitaḥ
5. śukraḥ videhaḥ anantavṛttāntaghanām pelavām
sudṛḍhām api tām saṃsṛtidaśām anubhavan sthitaḥ
5. Śukra, while bodiless (videha), continued to experience that state of transmigration (saṃsāra), which was full of endless events, subtle, yet extremely firm.
मन्दराचलसानुस्था सा तनुस्तस्य धीमतः ।
तापप्रसरसंशुष्का चर्मशेषा बभूव ह ॥ ६ ॥
mandarācalasānusthā sā tanustasya dhīmataḥ ,
tāpaprasarasaṃśuṣkā carmaśeṣā babhūva ha 6
6. mandarācalasānusthā sā tanuḥ tasya dhīmataḥ
tāpaprasarasaṃśuṣkā carmaśeṣā babhūva ha
6. tasya dhīmataḥ mandarācalasānusthā sā tanuḥ
tāpaprasarasaṃśuṣkā carmaśeṣā babhūva ha
6. That body of the wise one, situated on the peak of Mount Mandara, became completely dried up by the pervasive heat, with only skin remaining.
शरीररन्ध्रप्रवहद्वातसीत्काररूपया ।
चेष्टा दुःखक्षयानन्दात्काकल्येव प्रगायति ॥ ७ ॥

ceṣṭā duḥkhakṣayānandātkākalyeva pragāyati 7

7. The activity (ceṣṭā) in his body, manifest as the whistling sound of wind flowing through its orifices, seemed to sing forth with a soft, melodious tone (kākalī), born from the joy of the cessation of suffering.
मनोवराकमवटे लुठितं भवभूमिषु ।
हसतीवेति शुभ्राभ्रसितया दन्तमालया ॥ ८ ॥
manovarākamavaṭe luṭhitaṃ bhavabhūmiṣu ,
hasatīveti śubhrābhrasitayā dantamālayā 8
8. manovarākam avaṭe luṭhitam bhavabhūmiṣu
hasati iva iti śubhrābhrasitayā dantamālayā
8. manovarākam avaṭe bhavabhūmiṣu luṭhitam
śubhrābhrasitayā dantamālayā hasati iva iti
8. It was as if his poor mind (manas), which had been tossed into a pit and continually rolled through the realms of transmigration (saṃsāra), was now laughing, revealing a row of teeth white as a bright cloud.
दर्शयन्ती जगच्छून्यं वपुरक्ष्णोरकृत्रिमम् ।
मुखारण्यजरत्कूपरूपया गर्तशोभया ॥ ९ ॥
darśayantī jagacchūnyaṃ vapurakṣṇorakṛtrimam ,
mukhāraṇyajaratkūparūpayā gartaśobhayā 9
9. darśayantī jagat śūnyam vapuḥ akṣṇoḥ akṛtrimam
mukhāraṇyajaratkūparūpayā gartaśobhayā
9. darśayantī akṣṇoḥ akṛtrimam vapuḥ jagat
śūnyam mukhāraṇyajaratkūparūpayā gartaśobhayā
9. Showing to the eyes a natural form that made the world seem void, [she possessed] the beauty of a hollow resembling an old well in a face like a wilderness.
तापोपतप्ता संसिक्ता वर्षाजलभरेण सा ।
प्रागनुस्मरणोल्लासमिव वाष्पं विमुञ्चति ॥ १० ॥
tāpopataptā saṃsiktā varṣājalabhareṇa sā ,
prāganusmaraṇollāsamiva vāṣpaṃ vimuñcati 10
10. tāpopataptā saṃsiktā varṣājalabhareṇa sā
prāganusmaraṇollāsam iva vāṣpam vimuñcati
10. sā tāpopataptā varṣājalabhareṇa saṃsiktā
vāṣpam prāganusmaraṇollāsam iva vimuñcati
10. She, tormented by suffering and drenched by the abundance of rainwater, sheds tears as if they were the joy of past remembrance.
चन्द्रानिलविलासेन लुलिता वनभूमिषु ।
धारानिकरपातेन विनुन्ना जलदागमे ॥ ११ ॥
candrānilavilāsena lulitā vanabhūmiṣu ,
dhārānikarapātena vinunnā jaladāgame 11
11. candrānilavilāsena lulitā vanabhūmiṣu
dhārānikarapātena vinunnā jaladāgame
11. vanabhūmiṣu candrānilavilāsena lulitā
jaladāgame dhārānikarapātena vinunnā
11. Agitated in the forest lands by the playful interaction of the moon and wind, [she was] then driven by the onslaught of rain showers at the advent of the monsoon.
प्रावृण्निर्झररूपेण प्लुता गिरिनदीतटे ।
पांशुना पवनोत्थेन दुष्कृतेनेव रूषिता ॥ १२ ॥
prāvṛṇnirjhararūpeṇa plutā girinadītaṭe ,
pāṃśunā pavanotthena duṣkṛteneva rūṣitā 12
12. prāvṛṇnirjhararūpeṇa plutā girinadītaṭe
pāṃśunā pavanotthena duṣkṛtena iva rūṣitā
12. girinadītaṭe prāvṛṇnirjhararūpeṇa plutā
pavanotthena pāṃśunā duṣkṛtena iva rūṣitā
12. Inundated on the bank of a mountain river, [appearing] like a monsoon waterfall, [she was] then smeared with dust raised by the wind, as if by the consequence of misdeeds (duṣkṛta).
शुष्ककाष्ठवदालोला वातेषु कृतखाकृतिः ।
तारमारुतसीत्कारे वने तप इवास्थिता ॥ १३ ॥
śuṣkakāṣṭhavadālolā vāteṣu kṛtakhākṛtiḥ ,
tāramārutasītkāre vane tapa ivāsthitā 13
13. śuṣkakāṣṭhavat ālolā vāteṣu kṛtakhākṛtiḥ
tāramārutasītkāre vane tapaḥ iva āsthitā
13. sā (implied) vane vāteṣu tāramārutasītkāre
śuṣkakāṣṭhavat ālolā kṛtakhākṛtiḥ tapaḥ iva āsthitā
13. She remained in the forest, trembling like dry wood in the winds, her form having become like an empty space, as if performing austerity (tapas) amidst the loud whistling of the wind.
वक्रा शुष्कान्त्रतन्त्री च भूतभाङ्कारकारिणी ।
अरण्यलक्ष्भीर्बाल्येव शून्या चर्ममयोदरी ॥ १४ ॥
vakrā śuṣkāntratantrī ca bhūtabhāṅkārakāriṇī ,
araṇyalakṣbhīrbālyeva śūnyā carmamayodarī 14
14. vakrā śuṣkāntratantrī ca bhūtabhāṅkārakāriṇī
araṇyalakṣmīḥ bālā iva śūnyā carmamayodarī
14. sā (implied) vakrā śuṣkāntratantrī ca bhūtabhāṅkārakāriṇī
araṇyalakṣmīḥ bālā iva śūnyā carmamayodarī
14. Crooked, with dried-up intestines resembling lute strings, and producing a ghostly, hollow sound, she appeared as the forest's splendor (lakṣmī), empty and childlike, with a belly of mere skin.
रागद्वेषविहीनत्वात्तस्य पुण्याश्रमस्य तु ।
महातपस्त्वाच्च भृगोर्न भुक्ता मृगपक्षिभिः ॥ १५ ॥
rāgadveṣavihīnatvāttasya puṇyāśramasya tu ,
mahātapastvācca bhṛgorna bhuktā mṛgapakṣibhiḥ 15
15. rāgadveṣavihīnatvāt tasya puṇyāśramasya tu
mahātapas-tvāt ca bhṛgoḥ na bhuktā mṛgapakṣibhiḥ
15. tu tasya puṇyāśramasya rāgadveṣavihīnatvāt ca bhṛgoḥ
mahātapas-tvāt sā (implied) mṛgapakṣibhiḥ na bhuktā
15. Indeed, because of that sacred hermitage's freedom from attachment and aversion (rāga-dveṣa), and also due to Bhrigu's great austerity (tapas), she was not eaten by deer and birds.
यमनियमकृशीकृताङ्गयष्टिश्चरति तपः स्म भृगूद्वहस्य चेतः ।
तनुरथ पवनापनीतरक्ता चिरमलुठन्महतीषु सा शिलासु ॥ १६ ॥
yamaniyamakṛśīkṛtāṅgayaṣṭiścarati tapaḥ sma bhṛgūdvahasya cetaḥ ,
tanuratha pavanāpanītaraktā ciramaluṭhanmahatīṣu sā śilāsu 16
16. yamanaiyamakṛśīkṛtāṅgayaṣṭiḥ
carati tapaḥ sma bhṛgūdvahasya
cetaḥ tanuḥ atha pavanāpanītaraktā
ciram aluṭhat mahatīṣu sā śilāsu
16. sā (implied) yamanaiyamakṛśīkṛtāṅgayaṣṭiḥ
bhṛgūdvahasya cetaḥ tapaḥ
carati sma atha sā tanuḥ pavanāpanītaraktā
ciram mahatīṣu śilāsu aluṭhat
16. With a body-frame emaciated by self-restraint (yama) and observances (niyama), she performed austerity (tapas) with a mind focused like Bhrigu's. Then, her body, its blood seemingly removed by the wind, lay for a long time on large rocks.
