अस्ति तावदनन्तस्य तस्य क्वचिदयं किल ।
जगद्रूपः परिस्पन्दो मृगतृष्णा मराविव ॥ १ ॥

asti tāvadanantasya tasya kvacidayaṃ kila ,
jagadrūpaḥ parispando mṛgatṛṣṇā marāviva 1

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Indeed, this manifestation, which takes the form of the world, exists at some point within that infinite (being), much like a mirage appears in a desert.
तत्र कारणतां यातो ब्रह्मा कमलसंभवः ।
स्थितः पितामहत्वेन सृष्टभूतभरभ्रमः ॥ २ ॥
tatra kāraṇatāṃ yāto brahmā kamalasaṃbhavaḥ ,
sthitaḥ pitāmahatvena sṛṣṭabhūtabharabhramaḥ 2
2. tatra kāraṇatām yātaḥ brahmā kamalasaṃbhavaḥ
sthitaḥ pitāmahatvena sṛṣṭabhūtabharabhramaḥ
2. tatra kamalasaṃbhavaḥ brahmā kāraṇatām yātaḥ
sṛṣṭabhūtabharabhramaḥ pitāmahatvena sthitaḥ
2. In that context, Brahmā, who originated from a lotus, became the cause of creation. He is established as the grandfather, (seemingly) bewildered by the immense task of creating beings.
तस्याहं मानसः पुत्रो वसिष्ठः श्रेष्ठचेष्टितः ।
ऋक्षचक्रे ध्रुवधृते निवसामि युगं प्रति ॥ ३ ॥
tasyāhaṃ mānasaḥ putro vasiṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaceṣṭitaḥ ,
ṛkṣacakre dhruvadhṛte nivasāmi yugaṃ prati 3
3. tasya aham mānasaḥ putraḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭaceṣṭitaḥ
ṛkṣacakre dhruvadhṛte nivasāmi yugam prati
3. aham tasya mānasaḥ putraḥ śreṣṭaceṣṭitaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ
dhruvadhṛte ṛkṣacakre yugam prati nivasāmi
3. I am Vasiṣṭha, his (Brahmā's) mind-born son, known for excellent conduct. I reside in the constellation of the Great Bear (Ṛkṣacakra), which is held firm by the Pole Star (Dhruva), through each cosmic age (yuga).
सोऽहं कदाचिदास्थाने स्वर्गे तिष्ठञ्छतक्रतोः ।
श्रुतवान्नारदादिभ्यः कथां सुचिरजीविनाम् ॥ ४ ॥
so'haṃ kadācidāsthāne svarge tiṣṭhañchatakratoḥ ,
śrutavānnāradādibhyaḥ kathāṃ sucirajīvinām 4
4. saḥ aham kadācit āsthāne svarge tiṣṭhan śatakratoḥ
śrutavān nāradādibhyaḥ kathām sucirjīvinām
4. saḥ aham kadācit śatakratoḥ svarge āsthāne
tiṣṭhan nāradādibhyaḥ sucirjīvinām kathām śrutavān
4. Once, I, that same Vasiṣṭha, while present in the assembly hall in Indra's (Śatakratu's) heaven, heard stories from Nārada and other sages about those who have very long lifespans.
कथाप्रसङ्गे कस्मिंश्चिदथ तत्राभ्युवाच ह ।
शातातपो नाम मुनिमौनी मानी महामतिः ॥ ५ ॥
kathāprasaṅge kasmiṃścidatha tatrābhyuvāca ha ,
śātātapo nāma munimaunī mānī mahāmatiḥ 5
5. kathāprasaṅge kasmin cit atha tatra abhyuvāca
ha śātātapaḥ nāma muni maunī mānī mahāmatiḥ

5. Then, during a certain discussion, a greatly intelligent sage named Śātātapa, who was contemplative and self-respecting, spoke there.
मेरोरीशानकोणस्थे पद्मरागमये दिवि ।
अस्ति कल्पतरुः श्रीमाञ्छृङ्गे चूत इति श्रुतः ॥ ६ ॥
merorīśānakoṇasthe padmarāgamaye divi ,
asti kalpataruḥ śrīmāñchṛṅge cūta iti śrutaḥ 6
6. meroḥ īśānakoṇasthe padmarāgamaye divi asti
kalpataruḥ śrīmān śṛṅge cūtaḥ iti śrutaḥ
6. meroḥ īśānakoṇasthe padmarāgamaye divi
śrīmān kalpataruḥ cūtaḥ iti śrutaḥ asti
6. On a ruby-like celestial region, situated in the northeastern corner of Mount Meru, there exists a glorious wish-fulfilling tree (kalpataru), known by the name 'Cūta'.
तस्य कल्पतरोर्मूर्ध्नि दक्षिणस्कन्धकोटरे ।
कलधौतलताप्रोते विद्यते विहगालयः ॥ ७ ॥
tasya kalpatarormūrdhni dakṣiṇaskandhakoṭare ,
kaladhautalatāprote vidyate vihagālayaḥ 7
7. tasya kalpataroḥ mūrdhni dakṣiṇaskandhakoṭare
kaladhautalatāprote vidyate vihagālayaḥ
7. tasya kalpataroḥ mūrdhni dakṣiṇaskandhakoṭare

7. On the top of that wish-fulfilling tree (kalpataru), in the hollow of its southern branch, which is entwined with golden creepers, a bird's nest is found.
तस्मिन्निवसति श्रीमान्भुशुण्डो नाम वायसः ।
वीतरागो बृहत्कोशे ब्रह्मेव निजपङ्कजे ॥ ८ ॥
tasminnivasati śrīmānbhuśuṇḍo nāma vāyasaḥ ,
vītarāgo bṛhatkośe brahmeva nijapaṅkaje 8
8. tasmin nivasati śrīmān bhuśuṇḍaḥ nāma vāyasaḥ
vītarāgaḥ bṛhatkośe brahma iva nijapaṅkaje
8. tasmin śrīmān bhuśuṇḍaḥ nāma vāyasaḥ vītarāgaḥ
bṛhatkośe nijapaṅkaje brahma iva nivasati
8. In that (nest) resides a glorious crow named Bhuśuṇḍa, who is dispassionate, dwelling like the supreme reality (brahman) in its own lotus (heart-lotus) within the great cosmic sheath.
स यथा जगतां कोशे जीवतीह सुराश्चिरम् ।
चिरंजीवी तथा स्वर्गे न भूतो न भविष्यति ॥ ९ ॥
sa yathā jagatāṃ kośe jīvatīha surāściram ,
ciraṃjīvī tathā svarge na bhūto na bhaviṣyati 9
9. saḥ yathā jagatām kośe jīvati iha surāḥ ciram
cirañjīvī tathā svarge na bhūtaḥ na bhaviṣyati
9. saḥ yathā iha jagatām kośe ciram jīvati surāḥ,
tathā svarge na cirañjīvī bhūtaḥ na bhaviṣyati
9. Just as he lives for a long time here in the realm of beings, like the gods (who also live long), so no other long-lived one has ever existed in heaven, nor will one exist.
स दीर्घायुः स नीरागः स श्रीमान्स महामतिः ।
स विश्रान्तमतिः शान्तः स कान्तः कालकोविदः ॥ १० ॥
sa dīrghāyuḥ sa nīrāgaḥ sa śrīmānsa mahāmatiḥ ,
sa viśrāntamatiḥ śāntaḥ sa kāntaḥ kālakovidaḥ 10
10. saḥ dīrghāyuḥ saḥ nīrāgaḥ saḥ śrīmān saḥ mahāmatiḥ
saḥ viśrāntamatiḥ śāntaḥ saḥ kāntaḥ kālakovidaḥ
10. saḥ dīrghāyuḥ saḥ nīrāgaḥ saḥ śrīmān saḥ mahāmatiḥ
saḥ viśrāntamatiḥ śāntaḥ saḥ kāntaḥ kālakovidaḥ
10. He is long-lived, free from passion, glorious, and great-minded. He is one whose mind is tranquil, peaceful, charming, and an expert in time.
स यथा जीवति खगस्तथेह यदि जीव्यते ।
तद्भवेज्जीवितं पुण्यं दीर्घं चोदयमेव च ॥ ११ ॥
sa yathā jīvati khagastatheha yadi jīvyate ,
tadbhavejjīvitaṃ puṇyaṃ dīrghaṃ codayameva ca 11
11. saḥ yathā jīvati khagaḥ tathā iha yadi jīvyate
tat bhavet jīvitam puṇyam dīrgham ca udayam eva ca
11. saḥ yathā khagaḥ jīvati,
tathā iha yadi jīvyate,
tat jīvitam puṇyam dīrgham ca udayam eva ca bhavet
11. Just as that bird (Bhūṣuṇḍa) lives, if one lives here in that same manner, then such a life would be meritorious, long, and certainly prosperous.
इति तेन भुशुण्डोऽसौ भूयः पृष्टेन वर्णितः ।
यथावदेव देवानां सभायां सत्यमुक्तवान् ॥ १२ ॥
iti tena bhuśuṇḍo'sau bhūyaḥ pṛṣṭena varṇitaḥ ,
yathāvadeva devānāṃ sabhāyāṃ satyamuktavān 12
12. iti tena bhūṣuṇḍaḥ asau bhūyaḥ pṛṣṭena varṇitaḥ
yathāvat eva devānām sabhāyām satyam uktavān
12. iti tena bhūyaḥ pṛṣṭena asau bhūṣuṇḍaḥ varṇitaḥ.
(saḥ bhūṣuṇḍaḥ) devānām sabhāyām yathāvat eva satyam uktavān.
12. Thus, this Bhūṣuṇḍa was described again by the one who had been questioned. He (Bhūṣuṇḍa) had indeed spoken the truth accurately in the assembly of the gods.
कथावसरसंशान्तावथ याते सुरव्रजे ।
भुशुण्डं विहगं द्रष्टुमहं यातः कुतूहलात् ॥ १३ ॥
kathāvasarasaṃśāntāvatha yāte suravraje ,
bhuśuṇḍaṃ vihagaṃ draṣṭumahaṃ yātaḥ kutūhalāt 13
13. kathāvasarasaṃśāntau atha yāte suravraje
bhusuṇḍam vihagam draṣṭum aham yātaḥ kutūhalāt
13. atha suravraje yāte kathāvasarasaṃśāntau aham
kutūhalāt bhusuṇḍam vihagam draṣṭum yātaḥ
13. Then, after the time for the story had concluded and the host of gods had departed, I, out of curiosity, went to see the bird Bhusuṇḍa.
भुशुण्डः संस्थितो यत्र मेरोः श्रृङ्गं तदुत्तमम् ।
संप्राप्तवान्क्षणेनाहं पद्मरागमयं बृहत् ॥ १४ ॥
bhuśuṇḍaḥ saṃsthito yatra meroḥ śrṛṅgaṃ taduttamam ,
saṃprāptavānkṣaṇenāhaṃ padmarāgamayaṃ bṛhat 14
14. bhusuṇḍaḥ saṃsthitaḥ yatra meroḥ śṛṅgam tat uttamam
samprāptavān kṣaṇena aham padmarāgamayam bṛhat
14. aham kṣaṇena padmarāgamayam bṛhat tat meroḥ uttamam
śṛṅgam samprāptavān yatra bhusuṇḍaḥ saṃsthitaḥ
14. I quickly reached that excellent and great peak of Mount Meru, made of rubies, where Bhusuṇḍa resided.
रत्नगैरिककान्तेन तेजसा वह्निवर्चसा ।
मध्वासवरसेनेव रञ्जयत्ककुभां गणम् ॥ १५ ॥
ratnagairikakāntena tejasā vahnivarcasā ,
madhvāsavaraseneva rañjayatkakubhāṃ gaṇam 15
15. ratnagaikakāntena tejasā vahnivarcasā
madhvāsavarasena iva rañjayat kakubhām gaṇam
15. (tat) ratnagaikakāntena vahnivarcasā tejasā
madhvāsavarasena iva kakubhām gaṇam rañjayat (āsīt)
15. It was coloring all the quarters (directions) with a fiery radiance, resplendent like red ocher (used for jewels), as if with the essence of intoxicating honey wine.
कल्पान्तज्वलनोज्ज्वालापिण्डाद्रिमिव संचितम् ।
इन्द्रनीलशिखाधूममालोकारुणिताम्बरम् ॥ १६ ॥
kalpāntajvalanojjvālāpiṇḍādrimiva saṃcitam ,
indranīlaśikhādhūmamālokāruṇitāmbaram 16
16. kalpāntajvalanojjvālāpiṇḍa adrim iva saṃcitam
indranīlaśikhādhūmamālālokāruṇitāmbaram
16. (tat) kalpāntajvalanojjvālāpiṇḍa adrim iva saṃcitam
indranīlaśikhādhūmamālālokāruṇitāmbaram (ca āsīt)
16. It appeared like a mountain accumulated from intensely blazing masses of fire at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa), with the sky reddened by the streaking smoke of sapphire-like flames.
सर्वेषामेव रागाणां राशिमद्राविव स्थितम् ।
सर्वसंध्याभ्रजालानां घनमेकमिवाकरम् ॥ १७ ॥
sarveṣāmeva rāgāṇāṃ rāśimadrāviva sthitam ,
sarvasaṃdhyābhrajālānāṃ ghanamekamivākaram 17
17. sarveṣām eva rāgāṇām rāśim adrim iva sthitam
sarvasandhyābhrajālānām ghanam ekam iva ākaram
17. sarveṣām eva rāgāṇām adrim iva rāśim sthitam
sarvasandhyābhrajālānām ekam ākaram iva ghanam
17. It stood like a mountain, a mass, as it were, of all hues, and like a single mine, a dense collection of all twilight cloud formations.
उत्क्रान्तिं कुर्वतो मेरोर्ब्रह्मनाड्येव निर्गतम् ।
मूर्धानमागतं कान्तं वाडवं जठरानलम् ॥ १८ ॥
utkrāntiṃ kurvato merorbrahmanāḍyeva nirgatam ,
mūrdhānamāgataṃ kāntaṃ vāḍavaṃ jaṭharānalam 18
18. utkrāntim kurvataḥ meroḥ brahmanāḍyā iva nirgatam
mūrdhānam āgatam kāntam vāḍavam jaṭharānalam
18. meroḥ utkrāntim kurvataḥ brahmanāḍyā iva nirgatam,
mūrdhānam āgatam,
kāntam vāḍavam jaṭharānalam
18. It was the shining *vāḍava* fire, the digestive fire (jaṭharānala), which had emerged as if from the *brahmanāḍī* as Mount Meru was making its upward ascent (utkrānti), and had reached the summit.
सुमेरुवनदेव्येव नवालक्तकरञ्जितम् ।
लीलयाऽऽदातुमिन्दुं खे नीतं हस्तशिखाङ्गुलिम् ॥ १९ ॥
sumeruvanadevyeva navālaktakarañjitam ,
līlayā''dātuminduṃ khe nītaṃ hastaśikhāṅgulim 19
19. sumeruvanadevyā iva navālaktakarañjitam līlayā
ādātum indum khe nītam hastaśikhāṅgulim
19. sumeruvanadevyā iva navālaktakarañjitam,
khe indum līlayā ādātum nītam hastaśikhāṅgulim
19. It was the fingertip of a hand, raised playfully (līlayā) into the sky to grasp the moon, and stained with fresh lac (alaktaka) as if by the forest goddess of Sumeru.
ज्वालाभिरिव मालाभिररुणाभिः पयोमुखम् ।
खं गन्तुमिव सस्पन्दं शैलस्थमिव वाडवम् ॥ २० ॥
jvālābhiriva mālābhiraruṇābhiḥ payomukham ,
khaṃ gantumiva saspandaṃ śailasthamiva vāḍavam 20
20. jvālābhiḥ iva mālābhiḥ aruṇābhiḥ payomukham kham
gantum iva saspandam śailastham iva vāḍavam
20. aruṇābhiḥ jvālābhiḥ iva mālābhiḥ payomukham,
kham gantum iva saspandam,
śailastham iva vāḍavam
20. It was like the mouth of the waters (payomukha), adorned with red garlands as if with flames, pulsating as if to ascend to the sky, and resembling the *vāḍava* fire even though situated on a mountain.
ताराः स्प्रष्टुमिवाकाशमङ्गुलीभिरिव त्रिभिः ।
कचदंशुनखाग्राभिः परिचुम्बदिवोन्नतम् ॥ २१ ॥
tārāḥ spraṣṭumivākāśamaṅgulībhiriva tribhiḥ ,
kacadaṃśunakhāgrābhiḥ paricumbadivonnatam 21
21. tārāḥ spraṣṭum iva ākāśam aṅgulībhiḥ iva tribhiḥ
kacad-aṃśu-nakhāgrābhiḥ paricumbat iva unnatam
21. ākāśam tārāḥ tribhiḥ aṅgulībhiḥ iva spraṣṭum
unnatam kacad-aṃśu-nakhāgrābhiḥ iva paricumbat
21. As if to touch the stars in the sky with three fingers, and as if kissing its elevated (peaks) with its shining rays, which are like fingernail tips.
गर्जज्जीमूतमुरजं भूभृतानां तु मण्डपम् ।
हसत्कुसुमगुच्छाढ्यं ध्वनत्षट्पदपेटकम् ॥ २२ ॥
garjajjīmūtamurajaṃ bhūbhṛtānāṃ tu maṇḍapam ,
hasatkusumagucchāḍhyaṃ dhvanatṣaṭpadapeṭakam 22
22. garjat-jīmūta-murajam bhūbhṛtānām tu maṇḍapam
hasat-kusuma-guccha-āḍhyam dhvanat-ṣaṭpada-peṭakam
22. maṇḍapam tu bhūbhṛtānām garjat-jīmūta-murajam
hasat-kusuma-guccha-āḍhyam dhvanat-ṣaṭpada-peṭakam
22. Indeed, it is a pavilion for mountains, with thundering clouds as its drums, rich in laughing (blooming) bunches of flowers, and buzzing with swarms of bees.
दन्ततालदलावल्या परिहासादिव स्फुरत् ।
दोलालोलाप्सरोवृन्दमुदारमदमन्मथम् ॥ २३ ॥
dantatāladalāvalyā parihāsādiva sphurat ,
dolālolāpsarovṛndamudāramadamanmatham 23
23. danta-tāla-dala-āvalyā parihāsāt iva sphurat
dolā-lola-apsaras-vṛndam udāra-mada-manmatham
23. udāra-mada-manmatham dolā-lola-apsaras-vṛndam
danta-tāla-dala-āvalyā parihāsāt iva sphurat
23. It has a multitude of swaying Apsaras, who sparkle (or flutter) as if in jest with rows of palmyra leaves acting as their teeth, and who are imbued with generous, intoxicated passion.
शिलाविश्रान्तविबुधमिथुनाश्रितकन्दरम् ।
वराम्बराजिनं शुभ्रगङ्गायज्ञोपवीति च ॥ २४ ॥
śilāviśrāntavibudhamithunāśritakandaram ,
varāmbarājinaṃ śubhragaṅgāyajñopavīti ca 24
24. śilā-viśrānta-vibudha-mithuna-āśrita-kandaram
vara-ambara-ājinam śubhra-gaṅgā-yajñopavītī ca
24. śilā-viśrānta-vibudha-mithuna-āśrita-kandaram
vara-ambara-ājinam ca śubhra-gaṅgā-yajñopavītī
24. It possesses caves frequented by divine couples resting on rocks. It is adorned with excellent garments and (animal) hides, and it wears the pure Ganga as its sacred thread (yajñopavīta).
तापसं पिङ्गलमिव वेणुदण्डधरं स्थितम् ।
गङ्गानिर्झरनिर्ह्रादि लतागृहगतामरम् ॥ २५ ॥
tāpasaṃ piṅgalamiva veṇudaṇḍadharaṃ sthitam ,
gaṅgānirjharanirhrādi latāgṛhagatāmaram 25
25. tāpasaṃ piṅgalam iva veṇudaṇḍadharam sthitam
gaṅgānirjharanirhrādi latāgṛhagatāmaram
25. śiraḥ tāpasaṃ piṅgalam iva veṇudaṇḍadharam

25. The tawny head of Mount Meru was like an ascetic, holding a bamboo staff. It resonated with the roar of Gaṅgā’s waterfalls, and gods resided within its arbors of vines.
गन्धर्वगीतसुभगमामोदमधुरानिलम् ।
फुल्लहेमाम्बुजोत्तंसं तारारत्नविभूषितम् ।
व्योम्नः पारमिव प्राप्तं पिङ्गलं मैरवं शिरः ॥ २६ ॥
gandharvagītasubhagamāmodamadhurānilam ,
phullahemāmbujottaṃsaṃ tārāratnavibhūṣitam ,
vyomnaḥ pāramiva prāptaṃ piṅgalaṃ mairavaṃ śiraḥ 26

26. The tawny head of Mount Meru, beautiful with the songs of Gandharvas, having fragrant and sweet breezes, crowned with blooming golden lotuses, and adorned with gem-like stars, seemed to have reached the very end of the sky.
सितहरितपीतपाटलधवलैर्वनकुसुमराशिनवरङ्गैः ।
दिवि विहितामलचित्रं लीलाचलममरयुवतिवर्गस्य ॥ २७ ॥
sitaharitapītapāṭaladhavalairvanakusumarāśinavaraṅgaiḥ ,
divi vihitāmalacitraṃ līlācalamamarayuvativargasya 27
27. sitaharitapītapāṭaladhavalaiḥ vanakusumarāśinavaraṅgaiḥ
divi vihitāmalacitram līlācalam amarayuvatīvargasya

27. With new, varying hues of forest flowers - white, green, yellow, pink, and bright white - it displayed flawless artistry in the sky, serving as a pleasure mountain for groups of divine maidens.
