अथ तेष्वर्णवतटेष्वेते भूमौ विपश्चितः ।
उपविश्यैतदखिलं चक्रू राज्यप्रयोजनम् ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
atha teṣvarṇavataṭeṣvete bhūmau vipaścitaḥ ,
upaviśyaitadakhilaṃ cakrū rājyaprayojanam 1
1. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca atha teṣu arṇavataṭeṣu ete bhūmau
vipaścitaḥ upaviśya etat akhilam cakruḥ rājyaprayojanam
1. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca.
atha ete vipaścitaḥ teṣu arṇavataṭeṣu bhūmau upaviśya etat akhilam rājyaprayojanam cakruḥ
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Thereupon, these learned ones (vipaścit), having sat down on the ground (bhūmi) at those ocean shores, settled all these royal affairs (rājyaprayojana).
तदा तत्रैव ते वासभूमिं कृत्वा यथाक्रमम् ।
तस्थुर्मण्डलमर्यादां स्थापयामासुरक्षताम् ॥ २ ॥
tadā tatraiva te vāsabhūmiṃ kṛtvā yathākramam ,
tasthurmaṇḍalamaryādāṃ sthāpayāmāsurakṣatām 2
2. tadā tatra eva te vāsabhūmim kṛtvā yathākramam
tasthuḥ maṇḍalamaryādām sthāpayām āsuḥ akṣatām
2. te tadā tatra eva vāsabhūmim kṛtvā yathākramam
tasthuḥ maṇḍalamaryādām akṣatām sthāpayām āsuḥ
2. Then, having established their dwelling place there in due order, they remained and set up a secure perimeter for their encampment.
अथ वर्णयितुं श्रीमांस्तत्प्रतापमिवागमत् ।
संप्रविश्य समुद्रान्तरन्यलोकान्तरं रविः ॥ ३ ॥
atha varṇayituṃ śrīmāṃstatpratāpamivāgamat ,
saṃpraviśya samudrāntaranyalokāntaraṃ raviḥ 3
3. atha varṇayitum śrīmān tat pratāpam iva agamat
sampraviśya samudrāntaranyalokāntaram raviḥ
3. atha śrīmān raviḥ samudrāntaranyalokāntaram
sampraviśya iva tat pratāpam varṇayitum agamat
3. Then, the glorious sun (raviḥ), having completely entered the inner depths of the ocean as if into another world, set, as if to describe *their* (the warriors') valor.
आययौ यामिनीश्यामा मेघलेखेव तानवम् ।
संपादिताहर्व्यापारास्तस्थुः स्वशयनेषु ते ॥ ४ ॥
āyayau yāminīśyāmā meghalekheva tānavam ,
saṃpāditāharvyāpārāstasthuḥ svaśayaneṣu te 4
4. āyayau yāminīśyāmā meghalekhā iva tānavam
sampādita ahar vyāpārāḥ tasthuḥ sva śayaneṣu te
4. yāminīśyāmā meghalekhā tānavam iva āyayau te
sampādita ahar vyāpārāḥ sva śayaneṣu tasthuḥ
4. The dark night (yāminīśyāmā) arrived, like a fading streak of clouds. Those (the warriors) whose day's activities were completed settled into their own beds.
आसमुद्रं नदीवाहा इव दूरादुपागताः ।
इदं संपादयामासुर्विस्मयाकुलचेतसः ॥ ५ ॥
āsamudraṃ nadīvāhā iva dūrādupāgatāḥ ,
idaṃ saṃpādayāmāsurvismayākulacetasaḥ 5
5. āsamudram nadīvāhāḥ iva dūrāt upāgatāḥ
idam sampādayām āsuḥ vismayākulacetasaḥ
5. nadīvāhāḥ dūrāt āsamudram upāgatāḥ iva
vismayākulacetasaḥ idam sampādayām āsuḥ
5. Like river currents (nadīvāhāḥ) that have flowed from afar and gathered at the ocean (āsamudram), they too, with minds agitated by wonder (vismayākulacetasaḥ), accomplished this.
अहो नु दूरमध्वानं प्राप्ता वयमयत्नतः ।
प्रभावाद्देवदेवस्य वह्नेर्दिव्यैः स्ववाहनैः ॥ ६ ॥
aho nu dūramadhvānaṃ prāptā vayamayatnataḥ ,
prabhāvāddevadevasya vahnerdivyaiḥ svavāhanaiḥ 6
6. aho nu dūram adhvānam prāptāḥ vayam ayatnataḥ
prabhāvāt devadevasya vahneḥ divyaiḥ svavāhanaiḥ
6. aho nu vayam ayatnataḥ dūram adhvānam prāptāḥ
devadevasya vahneḥ prabhāvāt divyaiḥ svavāhanaiḥ
6. Oh, indeed, we have effortlessly traveled a great distance, by the power of Agni, the god of gods, using divine vehicles.
कियती स्यात्प्रविस्तीर्णा दृश्यश्रीरियमातता ।
इतः समुद्रस्तदनु द्वीपभूरम्बुधिः प्रभुः ॥ ७ ॥
kiyatī syātpravistīrṇā dṛśyaśrīriyamātatā ,
itaḥ samudrastadanu dvīpabhūrambudhiḥ prabhuḥ 7
7. kīyatī syāt pravistīrṇā dṛśyaśrīḥ iyam ātatā
itaḥ samudraḥ tadanu dvīpabhūḥ ambudhiḥ prabhuḥ
7. iyam kīyatī pravistīrṇā ātatā dṛśyaśrīḥ syāt
itaḥ samudraḥ tadanu dvīpabhūḥ prabhuḥ ambudhiḥ
7. How vast and extensive might this visible expanse be? On this side, there is the ocean; thereafter, the land of islands, and then a mighty ocean.
इतो द्वीपं ततोऽम्भोधिः किमन्ते स्यात्ततोऽपि च ।
कियती कीदृशी वा स्यान्मायेयं चेत्यरूपिणी ॥ ८ ॥
ito dvīpaṃ tato'mbhodhiḥ kimante syāttato'pi ca ,
kiyatī kīdṛśī vā syānmāyeyaṃ cetyarūpiṇī 8
8. itaḥ dvīpam tataḥ ambudhiḥ kim ante syāt tataḥ
api ca kīyatī kīdṛśī vā syāt māyā iyam cetyarūpiṇī
8. itaḥ dvīpam tataḥ ambudhiḥ kim ante syāt tataḥ
api ca iyam māyā kīyatī vā kīdṛśī cetyarūpiṇī syāt
8. From here, an island; then, an ocean. What could be at the end, and even beyond that? How vast or of what kind might this illusion (māyā) be, which assumes a perceptible form?
तत्प्रार्थयामहे देवं हुताशं तद्वरादिमाः ।
प्रेक्षामहे दिशः सर्वा आपर्यन्तमखेदिनः ॥ ९ ॥
tatprārthayāmahe devaṃ hutāśaṃ tadvarādimāḥ ,
prekṣāmahe diśaḥ sarvā āparyantamakhedinaḥ 9
9. tat prārthayāmahe devam hutāśam tadvārāt imāḥ
prekṣāmahe diśaḥ sarvāḥ āparyantam akhedinaḥ
9. tat vayam devam hutāśam prārthayāmahe tadvārāt vayam
akhedinaḥ imāḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ āparyantam prekṣāmahe
9. Therefore, we pray to Agni, the god of fire. By his boon, we shall tirelessly observe all these directions up to their very ends.
इति संचिन्त्य ते सर्वे यथास्थानमवस्थिताः ।
सममेवाह्वयामासुर्भगवन्तं हुताशनम् ॥ १० ॥
iti saṃcintya te sarve yathāsthānamavasthitāḥ ,
samamevāhvayāmāsurbhagavantaṃ hutāśanam 10
10. iti saṃcintya te sarve yathāsthānam avasthitāḥ
samam eva āhvayāmāsuḥ bhagavantam hutāśanam
10. te sarve iti saṃcintya yathāsthānam avasthitāḥ
samam eva bhagavantam hutāśanam āhvayāmāsuḥ
10. Having thus deliberated, all of them, positioned in their respective places, simultaneously invoked the divine Agni (hutāśana).
बभूव भगवानेषामथ दृश्यो हुताशनः ।
आकारवान्वरं पुत्राः प्रगृह्णीतेत्युवाच ह ॥ ११ ॥
babhūva bhagavāneṣāmatha dṛśyo hutāśanaḥ ,
ākāravānvaraṃ putrāḥ pragṛhṇītetyuvāca ha 11
11. babhūva bhagavān eṣām atha dṛśyaḥ hutāśanaḥ
ākāravān varam putrāḥ pragṛhṇīta iti uvāca ha
11. atha eṣām bhagavān hutāśanaḥ dṛśyaḥ babhūva ākāravān
[bhūtvā] "putrāḥ varam pragṛhṇīta" iti ha uvāca
11. Then, the divine Agni (hutāśana) became visible to them. Assuming a form, he said, "O sons, choose a boon!"
विपश्चित ऊचुः ।
पञ्चभूतात्मकस्यास्य दृश्यस्यान्तं सुरेश्वर ।
देहेन मन्त्रदेहेन तदन्ते मनसापि च ॥ १२ ॥
vipaścita ūcuḥ ,
pañcabhūtātmakasyāsya dṛśyasyāntaṃ sureśvara ,
dehena mantradehena tadante manasāpi ca 12
12. vipaścitaḥ ūcuḥ pañcabhūtātmakasya asya dṛśyasya antam
sureśvara dehena mantradehena tat ante manasā api ca
12. vipaścitaḥ ūcuḥ – "He sureśvara,
pañcabhūtātmakasya asya dṛśyasya antam dehena mantradehena ca,
tat ante manasā api [yāvat saṃvedanam,
yāvat saṃbhavam,
yāvat ātmakam paśyema.
.
.
]"
12. The wise ones (vipaścitaḥ) said: "O Lord of gods (sureśvara), [grant us to perceive] the full extent of this visible (dṛśya) realm, which is composed of the five elements, by means of our physical body, by means of our subtle body (mantradeha), and after that, even by means of the mind.
यावत्संवेदनं यावत्संभवं यावदात्मकम् ।
पश्येम इति नो देव दीयतामुत्तमो वरः ॥ १३ ॥
yāvatsaṃvedanaṃ yāvatsaṃbhavaṃ yāvadātmakam ,
paśyema iti no deva dīyatāmuttamo varaḥ 13
13. yāvat saṃvedanam yāvat saṃbhavam yāvat ātmakam
paśyema iti naḥ deva dīyatām uttamaḥ varaḥ
13. yāvat saṃvedanam,
yāvat saṃbhavam,
yāvat ātmakam [ca] paśyema iti naḥ deva uttamaḥ varaḥ dīyatām
13. ...that we may perceive [its entirety] - to the full extent of consciousness, to the full extent possible, and to the full extent of our self (ātman). O God (deva), let this supreme boon (vara) be granted to us!
आसिद्धगम्यमध्वानं पश्येम वपुषा वयम् ।
तदन्ते मनसैवाथ दृश्यं पश्येम भो प्रभो ॥ १४ ॥
āsiddhagamyamadhvānaṃ paśyema vapuṣā vayam ,
tadante manasaivātha dṛśyaṃ paśyema bho prabho 14
14. āsiddhagamyam adhvānam paśyema vapuṣā vayam
tadante manasā eva atha dṛśyam paśyema bho prabho
14. bho prabho vayam vapuṣā āsiddhagamyam adhvānam
paśyema atha tadante manasā eva dṛśyam paśyema
14. O Lord, may we ourselves traverse with our bodies the path that is to be attained by perfected beings (Siddhas). And then, at its culmination, may we perceive the ultimate reality (the visible) solely through our minds.
आसिद्धगम्यमध्वानं मृत्युरस्माकमस्तु मा ।
अध्वन्यसंभवद्देहे मन एव प्रयातु नः ॥ १५ ॥
āsiddhagamyamadhvānaṃ mṛtyurasmākamastu mā ,
adhvanyasaṃbhavaddehe mana eva prayātu naḥ 15
15. āsiddhagamyam adhvānam mṛtyuḥ asmākam astu mā
adhvani asaṃbhavat dehe manaḥ eva prayātu naḥ
15. āsiddhagamyam adhvānam asmākam mṛtyuḥ mā astu
adhvani asaṃbhavat dehe naḥ manaḥ eva prayātu
15. May death not befall us while on the path accessible to perfected beings (Siddhas). When the body is no longer sustainable on that path, may our mind alone proceed for us.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
अथैवमस्त्विति प्रोच्य पावकः सहसागमत् ।
क्षणादौर्वतया यातुं समुद्र इव सत्वरः ॥ १६ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
athaivamastviti procya pāvakaḥ sahasāgamat ,
kṣaṇādaurvatayā yātuṃ samudra iva satvaraḥ 16
16. atha evam astu iti procya pāvakaḥ sahasā agamat
kṣaṇāt aurvatayā yātum samudraḥ iva satvaraḥ
16. atha evam astu iti procya pāvakaḥ sahasā kṣaṇāt
samudraḥ iva satvaraḥ aurvatayā yātum agamat
16. Sri Vasistha said: Then, having declared, "So be it," Fire (Pāvaka) swiftly departed, as if the ocean itself were quickly rushing to become the submarine fire (Aurva).
अग्निर्जगामाथ समाजगाम निशा विलम्ब्याथ जगाम सापि ।
समाजगामापि रविर्जगाम तेषां च धीरार्णवलङ्घनेहा ॥ १७ ॥
agnirjagāmātha samājagāma niśā vilambyātha jagāma sāpi ,
samājagāmāpi ravirjagāma teṣāṃ ca dhīrārṇavalaṅghanehā 17
17. agniḥ jagāma atha samājagāma niśā vilambya atha jagāma sā
api samājagāma api raviḥ jagāma teṣām ca dhīrārṇavalanghinehā
17. agniḥ jagāma atha niśā samājagāma vilambya atha sā api jagāma
raviḥ api samājagāma jagāma ca teṣām dhīrārṇavalanghinehā
17. The Fire departed. Then night arrived; having lingered for a while, she too departed. The sun also arrived, and then went away. And similarly, for them, there was the resolute effort to cross the ocean (saṃsāra).
