अथ राघव रुद्रं तं तदा तस्मिन्महाम्बरे ।
प्रवृत्तं नर्तितुं मत्तमपश्यं वितताकृतिम् ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: "Then, O Rāghava, in that vast expanse, I saw that Rudra - who was maddened, of immense form, and had begun to dance."
व्योमेवाकृतिमापन्नमजहद्व्यापितां निजाम् ।
महाकारं घनश्यामं दशाशापरिपूरकम् ॥ २ ॥
vyomevākṛtimāpannamajahadvyāpitāṃ nijām ,
mahākāraṃ ghanaśyāmaṃ daśāśāparipūrakam 2
2. vyoma iva ākṛtim āpannam ajahat vyāpitām
nijām mahākāram ghanaśyāmam daśāśāparipūrakam

2. He assumed a form like the sky, yet without abandoning his inherent pervasiveness, immense in body, dark like a dense cloud, and filling all ten directions.
अर्केन्दुवह्निनयनं चलद्दशदिगम्बरम् ।
घनदीर्घप्रभाजालमालानं श्यामलार्चिषाम् ॥ ३ ॥
arkenduvahninayanaṃ caladdaśadigambaram ,
ghanadīrghaprabhājālamālānaṃ śyāmalārciṣām 3
3. arka-indu-vahni-nayanam calat-daśa-dik-ambaram
ghana-dīrgha-prabhājāla-mālānam śyamala arciṣām
3. arka-indu-vahni-nayanam calat-daśa-dik-ambaram
ghana-dīrgha-prabhājāla-mālānam śyamala arciṣām
3. With eyes like the sun, moon, and fire, and having the moving ten directions as its garment, it forms a dense, long network of radiance, like a garland for dark-blue flames.
वडवाग्निदृशं लोलभुजोर्मिभरभासुरम् ।
एकार्णवार्णो द्राग्देहबन्धेनेव समुत्थितम् ॥ ४ ॥
vaḍavāgnidṛśaṃ lolabhujormibharabhāsuram ,
ekārṇavārṇo drāgdehabandheneva samutthitam 4
4. vaḍavāgni-dṛśam lola-bhuja-ūrmi-bhara-bhāsuram
ekārṇavārṇam drāk deha-bandhena iva samutthitam
4. vaḍavāgni-dṛśam lola-bhuja-ūrmi-bhara-bhāsuram
ekārṇavārṇam drāk deha-bandhena iva samutthitam
4. With eyes like the submarine fire, and shining with a multitude of restless, arm-like waves, it arose suddenly, as if taking a bodily form from the waters of the single primordial ocean (ekārṇava).
पश्याम्यनन्तरमहं यावत्तस्य शरीरतः ।
छायेव परिनिर्याति नर्तनानुविधायिनी ॥ ५ ॥
paśyāmyanantaramahaṃ yāvattasya śarīrataḥ ,
chāyeva pariniryāti nartanānuvidhāyinī 5
5. paśyāmi anantaram aham yāvat tasya śarīrataḥ
chāyā iva pariniryāti nartana-anuvidhāyinī
5. aham anantaram paśyāmi yāvat tasya śarīrataḥ
chāyā iva nartana-anuvidhāyinī pariniryāti
5. Immediately afterwards, I see a shadow (chāyā) emerging from its body, as if mimicking its dance.
सूर्येष्वविद्यमानेषु महातमसि चाम्बरे ।
स्थिता कथमियं छाया भवेदिति मतिर्मम ॥ ६ ॥
sūryeṣvavidyamāneṣu mahātamasi cāmbare ,
sthitā kathamiyaṃ chāyā bhavediti matirmama 6
6. sūryeṣu avidyamāneṣu mahā-tamasi ca ambare
sthitā katham iyam chāyā bhavet iti matiḥ mama
6. sūryeṣu avidyamāneṣu ca mahā-tamasi ambare,
iyam chāyā katham sthitā bhavet iti mama matiḥ
6. When no suns are present and the sky is enveloped in deep darkness, how could this shadow (chāyā) exist? This is my reflection.
यावद्विचारयाम्याशु तावत्तस्य तदा पुरः ।
सा स्थिता परिनृत्यन्ती विस्तीर्णा श्रीत्रिलोचना ॥ ७ ॥
yāvadvicārayāmyāśu tāvattasya tadā puraḥ ,
sā sthitā parinṛtyantī vistīrṇā śrītrilocanā 7
7. yāvat vicārayāmi āśu tāvat tasya tadā puraḥ
sā sthitā parinṛtyantī vistīrṇā śrītrilocanā
7. yāvat āśu vicārayāmi tāvat tadā tasya puraḥ
sā sthitā vistīrṇā parinṛtyantī śrītrilocanā
7. As quickly as I considered, right then, before him, she stood, dancing all around – vast and endowed with three eyes (Śrī Trilōcanā).
कृष्णा कृशा शिरालाङ्गी जर्जरा वितताकृतिः ।
ज्वालाकुलानलालोलवनसंभारशेखरा ॥ ८ ॥
kṛṣṇā kṛśā śirālāṅgī jarjarā vitatākṛtiḥ ,
jvālākulānalālolavanasaṃbhāraśekharā 8

8. She was dark, emaciated, with a body full of prominent veins, dilapidated, and of expansive form. Her crown was a mass of forests, agitated by flickering fires and raging flames.
मिन्नाञ्जनतमःश्यामा यामिनोवाकृतिं गता ।
तमःश्रीर्देहयुक्तेव साकारेवाम्बरद्युतिः ॥ ९ ॥
minnāñjanatamaḥśyāmā yāminovākṛtiṃ gatā ,
tamaḥśrīrdehayukteva sākārevāmbaradyutiḥ 9
9. bhinnāñjanatamaḥśyāmā yāminī iva ākṛtiṃ gatā
tamaḥśrīḥ dehayuktā iva sa-ākārā iva ambaradyutiḥ
9. sā bhinnāñjanatamaḥśyāmā yāminī iva ākṛtiṃ gatā,
tamaḥśrīḥ dehayuktā iva sa-ākārā iva ambaradyutiḥ
9. She was dark like crushed collyrium or absolute darkness, having assumed the form of night. It was as if she were the very glory of darkness embodied, or the brilliance of the sky given tangible form.
अतिदीर्घा करालास्या नभो मातुमिवोद्यता ।
दीर्घजानुभुजभ्रान्त्या मातुकामेव दिङ्मुखम् ॥ १० ॥
atidīrghā karālāsyā nabho mātumivodyatā ,
dīrghajānubhujabhrāntyā mātukāmeva diṅmukham 10
10. atidīrghā karālāsyā nabhaḥ mātum iva udyatā
dīrghajānubhujabhrāntyā mātukāmā iva dikmukham
10. sā atidīrghā karālāsyā nabhaḥ mātum iva udyatā,
dīrghajānubhujabhrāntyā dikmukham mātukāmā iva
10. She was exceedingly tall, with a terrifying face, poised as if to measure the sky. Through the illusion of her long knees and arms, she seemed to desire to measure the very directions.
कृशा बहूपवासेव परिनिम्नमहातनुः ।
कज्जलश्यामला मेघमालेव पवनाकुला ॥ ११ ॥
kṛśā bahūpavāseva parinimnamahātanuḥ ,
kajjalaśyāmalā meghamāleva pavanākulā 11
11. kṛśā bahūpavāsā iva parininnamahātanuḥ
kajjalaśyāmalā meghamālā iva pavanākulā
11. sā (implied) bahūpavāsā iva kṛśā parininnamahātanuḥ (asti).
kajjalaśyāmalā pavanākulā meghamālā iva (asti).
11. She was emaciated, as if from many fasts, with her vast body deeply hollowed out. She was dark like collyrium, resembling a chain of clouds disturbed by the wind.
कृशाशक्ता यदा स्थातुं सुदीर्घा विधिना तदा ।
ग्रथितेव शिरारूपैर्दामभिर्दैर्घ्यशालिभिः ॥ १२ ॥
kṛśāśaktā yadā sthātuṃ sudīrghā vidhinā tadā ,
grathiteva śirārūpairdāmabhirdairghyaśālibhiḥ 12
12. kṛśā aśaktā yadā sthātum sudīrghā vidhinā tadā
grathitā iva śirārūpaiḥ dāmabhiḥ dairghyaśālibhiḥ
12. yadā kṛśā aśaktā sthātum,
tadā vidhinā sudīrghā (sā) śirārūpaiḥ dairghyaśālibhiḥ dāmabhiḥ grathitā iva (bhāti).
12. When she was emaciated and unable to stand, she was exceedingly long by her very nature (vidhinā). She appeared as if bound together by long cords in the form of sinews.
तथा नाम सुदीर्घा सा यथा तस्याः शिरःखुरम् ।
मया दृष्टं प्रयत्नेन चिरोर्ध्वाधोगमागमैः ॥ १३ ॥
tathā nāma sudīrghā sā yathā tasyāḥ śiraḥkhuram ,
mayā dṛṣṭaṃ prayatnena cirordhvādhogamāgamaiḥ 13
13. tathā nāma sudīrghā sā yathā tasyāḥ śiraḥkhuram
mayā dṛṣṭam prayatnena cirordhvādhogamagāgamaiḥ
13. sā nāma tathā sudīrghā (asti) yathā tasyāḥ śiraḥkhuram mayā prayatnena cirordhvādhogamagāgamaiḥ dṛṣṭam (abhūt).
13. She was indeed so exceedingly long that I could see her head and hoof only with great effort, by repeatedly moving my gaze up and down for a long time.
अन्त्रान्त्रतन्त्रीग्रशितशिरःकरखुरोत्करा ।
आमूलात्सूत्रवलिता कण्टकानामिव स्थली ॥ १४ ॥
antrāntratantrīgraśitaśiraḥkarakhurotkarā ,
āmūlātsūtravalitā kaṇṭakānāmiva sthalī 14
14. antrāntratantrīgraśitaśiraḥkarakhurotkarā
āmūlāt sūtravvalitā kaṇṭakānām iva sthalī
14. antrāntratantrīgraśitaśiraḥkarakhurotkarā (sā) आमूलात् sūtravvalitā kaṇṭakānām sthalī iva (bhāti).
14. From its very base, it was like a mass of thorns, with its collection of heads, forelimbs, and hooves entangled by intertwined strings of intestines, as if wound with threads.
विश्वरूपमयार्कादिशिरःकमलजालकैः ।
कृतमालामलालोकवातवह्निमयाञ्चला ॥ १५ ॥
viśvarūpamayārkādiśiraḥkamalajālakaiḥ ,
kṛtamālāmalālokavātavahnimayāñcalā 15
15. viśvarūpamayārkādiśiraḥkamalajālākaiḥ
kṛtamālāmalālokavātavahnimayāñcalā

15. By means of the clusters of lotus-like heads of the sun and other deities, which represent the universal form, she (the goddess) is described as having her garment's hem - composed of pure light, wind, and fire - fashioned into a garland.
प्रलम्बकर्णालुलितनागा नृशवकुण्डला ।
शुष्कतुम्बीलताष्ठीलादीर्घालोलासितस्तनी ॥ १६ ॥
pralambakarṇālulitanāgā nṛśavakuṇḍalā ,
śuṣkatumbīlatāṣṭhīlādīrghālolāsitastanī 16
16. pralamba-karṇa-ālulita-nāgā nṛ-śava-kuṇḍalā
śuṣka-tumbī-latā-ṣṭhīlā-dīrgha-ālola-asita-stanī
16. sā pralamba-karṇa-ālulita-nāgā nṛ-śava-kuṇḍalā
śuṣka-tumbī-latā-ṣṭhīlā-dīrgha-ālola-asita-stanī
16. She whose long, pendulous ears cause serpents to sway; who wears human corpses as earrings; and whose long, swinging, dark breasts resemble dry, heavy gourd creepers.
कुमारबर्हिपिच्छौघैर्ब्राह्ममूर्धजमण्डलैः ।
लाञ्छितोच्चसुराधीशशिरःखट्वाङ्गमण्डला ॥ १७ ॥
kumārabarhipicchaughairbrāhmamūrdhajamaṇḍalaiḥ ,
lāñchitoccasurādhīśaśiraḥkhaṭvāṅgamaṇḍalā 17
17. kumāra-barhi-piccha-oghaiḥ brāhma-mūrdhaja-maṇḍalaiḥ
lāñchita-ucca-surādhīśa-śiraḥ-khaṭvāṅga-maṇḍalā
17. sā lāñchita-ucca-surādhīśa-śiraḥ-khaṭvāṅga-maṇḍalā
kumāra-barhi-piccha-oghaiḥ brāhma-mūrdhaja-maṇḍalaiḥ
17. Adorned by multitudes of Kumara's peacock feathers and by garlands of Brahma's hair, she is the one whose array of skull-staffs (khaṭvāṅga) is marked with the prominent heads of the lord of gods (Indra).
दन्तेन्दुमालाविमला विमलोद्दयोतपाततः ।
तमोर्णवोर्द्ध्वलेखेव वृत्तावर्तविवर्तिनी ॥ १८ ॥
dantendumālāvimalā vimaloddayotapātataḥ ,
tamorṇavorddhvalekheva vṛttāvartavivartinī 18
18. danta-indu-mālā-vimalā vimala-uddyota-pātataḥ
tamas-arṇava-ūrdhva-lekhā iva vṛtta-āvarta-vivartinī
18. sā danta-indu-mālā-vimalā vimala-uddyota-pātataḥ
tamas-arṇava-ūrdhva-lekhā iva vṛtta-āvarta-vivartinī
18. She is pure, having a garland of moon-like teeth, (shining forth) from the emission of pure radiance. She appears like a line ascending above the ocean of darkness, revolving in circular eddies.
शुष्कतुम्बीलतेवोच्चैराकाशतरुसंस्थिता ।
विलोलावयवाष्ठीला वातैः पटपटारवा ॥ १९ ॥
śuṣkatumbīlatevoccairākāśatarusaṃsthitā ,
vilolāvayavāṣṭhīlā vātaiḥ paṭapaṭāravā 19
19. śuṣkatumbīlatā iva uccaiḥ ākāśatarusaṃsthitā
vilolāvayavaṣṭhīlā vātaiḥ paṭapaṭāravā
19. śuṣkatumbīlatā iva uccaiḥ ākāśatarusaṃsthitā
vilolāvayavaṣṭhīlā vātaiḥ paṭapaṭāravā
19. Like a dry gourd creeper perched high on a sky-tree, her trembling, pillar-like body rattles (paṭapaṭārava) due to the winds.
बृहत्तरङ्गोर्ध्वभुजा श्यामलोल्लासशालिनी ।
एकार्णवोर्मिमालेव नृत्तावृत्तिविवर्तिनी ॥ २० ॥
bṛhattaraṅgordhvabhujā śyāmalollāsaśālinī ,
ekārṇavormimāleva nṛttāvṛttivivartinī 20
20. bṛhattaraṅgordhvabhujā śyāmalollāsaśālinī
ekārṇavormimālā iva nṛttāvṛttivivartinī

20. With arms raised like mighty waves, endowed with dark splendor, she twists and turns in a dance-like motion, like a garland of waves from the single cosmic ocean (ekārṇava) (at dissolution).
क्षणमेकभुजाकारा क्षणं बहुभुजाकुला ।
अनन्तोग्रभुजाक्षिप्तजगन्नर्तनमण्डपा ॥ २१ ॥
kṣaṇamekabhujākārā kṣaṇaṃ bahubhujākulā ,
anantograbhujākṣiptajagannartanamaṇḍapā 21
21. kṣaṇam ekabhujākārā kṣaṇam bahubhujākulā
anantograbhujākṣiptajagannartanamandapā

21. For a moment she takes the form of a single arm, then for another moment, she is crowded with many arms. Her infinite, fierce arms transform the entire world into a dancing pavilion.
क्षिप्रमेकमुखाकारा क्षिप्रं बहुमुखाकृतिः ।
अनन्तोग्रमुखी क्षिप्रं निर्मुखी चापि च क्षणम् ॥ २२ ॥
kṣipramekamukhākārā kṣipraṃ bahumukhākṛtiḥ ,
anantogramukhī kṣipraṃ nirmukhī cāpi ca kṣaṇam 22
22. kṣipram ekamukhākārā kṣipram bahumukhākṛtiḥ
anantogramukhī kṣipram nirmukhī ca api ca kṣaṇam
22. kṣipram ekamukhākārā kṣipram bahumukhākṛtiḥ
anantogramukhī kṣipram nirmukhī ca api ca kṣaṇam
22. Quickly, she appears with a single face; quickly, she takes on the form of many faces. Quickly, she manifests with infinite, fierce faces, and for a moment, she is even faceless.
एकपादान्विता क्षिप्रं क्षिप्रं पादशतान्विता ।
क्षणं चानन्तपादाढ्या निष्पादाकारिणी क्षणम् ॥ २३ ॥
ekapādānvitā kṣipraṃ kṣipraṃ pādaśatānvitā ,
kṣaṇaṃ cānantapādāḍhyā niṣpādākāriṇī kṣaṇam 23
23. ekapādānvitā kṣipram kṣipram pādaśatānvitā
kṣaṇam ca anantapādāḍhyā niṣpādākāriṇī kṣaṇam
23. kṣipram ekapādānvitā,
kṣipram ca pādaśatānvitā,
kṣaṇam anantapādāḍhyā,
kṣaṇam niṣpādākāriṇī
23. Quickly, she is endowed with one foot; then quickly with a hundred feet. For a moment, she is rich with infinite feet, and for another moment, she takes a form with no feet at all.
कालरात्रिरियं सेति मयानुमितदेहिका ।
काली भगवती सेयमितिनिर्णीतसज्जना ॥ २४ ॥
kālarātririyaṃ seti mayānumitadehikā ,
kālī bhagavatī seyamitinirṇītasajjanā 24
24. kālarātriḥ iyam sā iti mayā anumitadehikā
kālī bhagavatī sā iyam iti nirṇītasajjanā
24. iyam sā kālarātriḥ iti mayā anumitadehikā
iyam sā bhagavatī kālī iti nirṇītasajjanā
24. Thinking, 'This is Kalaratri,' I inferred her body. Yet, by the virtuous, she is decisively recognized as the divine (bhagavatī) Kālī.
ज्वालापूर्णारघट्टोग्रखाताभनयनत्रया ।
ज्वलद्धरेन्द्रनीलाद्रिसानूपमललाटभूः ॥ २५ ॥
jvālāpūrṇāraghaṭṭograkhātābhanayanatrayā ,
jvaladdharendranīlādrisānūpamalalāṭabhūḥ 25
25. jvālāpūrṇāraghaṭṭograkhātābhanayanatrayā |
jvaladdharendranīlādrisānūpamalalalāṭabhūḥ

25. Her three eyes resemble dreadful pits, like terrible water-wheels or chasms full of blazing flames. Her forehead region is like the blazing slope of a great sapphire mountain.
लोकालोकेन्द्रनीलोग्रश्वभ्रभीमहनुद्वया ।
वातस्कन्धगुणप्रोततारामुक्ताकलापिनी ॥ २६ ॥
lokālokendranīlograśvabhrabhīmahanudvayā ,
vātaskandhaguṇaprotatārāmuktākalāpinī 26

26. She has two dreadful jaws resembling terrible abysses like the sapphire Lokāloka mountains. She is adorned with garlands of stars and pearls strung together by powerful strings of wind.
इन्द्रनीलाद्रितुल्योच्चतोरणोच्चैःप्रभाम्बरे ।
विश्रान्तकाचशैलाभभगभीषणवायसी ॥ २७ ॥

27. In a sky of intense splendor, resembling a high archway and a sapphire mountain, rests a terrifying crow, whose majesty is like a crystal mountain.
नृत्यद्भुजलतापुष्पैर्नखशुभ्राभ्रमण्डलैः ।
पूर्णचन्द्रशतानीव भ्रमन्ती नभस्तले ॥ २८ ॥
nṛtyadbhujalatāpuṣpairnakhaśubhrābhramaṇḍalaiḥ ,
pūrṇacandraśatānīva bhramantī nabhastale 28
28. nṛtyadbhujalatāpuṣpaiḥ nakhaśubhrābhramaṇḍalaiḥ

28. Wandering in the sky like hundreds of full moons, she moves with dancing creeper-like arm-flowers and circles of white cloud-like nails.
भ्रमद्भिर्व्याप्तदिक्चक्रा भुजैः कल्पाम्बुदैरिव ।
वर्षद्भिः प्राणिजप्रान्ततारालेखाबृहत्प्रभाः ॥ २९ ॥
bhramadbhirvyāptadikcakrā bhujaiḥ kalpāmbudairiva ,
varṣadbhiḥ prāṇijaprāntatārālekhābṛhatprabhāḥ 29

29. With revolving arms that pervade the regions of the sky, like the formidable clouds at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa), raining down great streaks of starlight at the fringes of creation.
नखपुष्पाङ्गुलीवल्लीजालैर्भ्रान्तभुजद्रुमैः ।
कृष्णैः काननिताशेषगगनाग्रोग्रमूर्तिभिः ॥ ३० ॥
nakhapuṣpāṅgulīvallījālairbhrāntabhujadrumaiḥ ,
kṛṣṇaiḥ kānanitāśeṣagaganāgrogramūrtibhiḥ 30
30. nakhapuṣpāṅgulīvallījālaiḥ bhrāntabhujadrumaiḥ

30. With their black, revolving arm-trees, which are multitudes of nail-flower-finger-creepers, and with their formidable forms that transform the entire expanse of the sky into a dense forest.
तमालतालतः स्थूलां भुवं दग्धमहावनैः ।
विडम्बयन्ती वलितां जङ्घासङ्घेन लोलता ॥ ३१ ॥
tamālatālataḥ sthūlāṃ bhuvaṃ dagdhamahāvanaiḥ ,
viḍambayantī valitāṃ jaṅghāsaṅghena lolatā 31

31. The trembling caused by the mass of shanks mimicked the bulky earth, which was made rugged by tamāla and palm trees and scarred by burnt great forests.
अप्यनन्ते महाव्योम्नि पारं प्राप्तैः शिरोरुहैः ।
कुर्वाणेवाततं वासं चरत्तिमिरदन्तिनः ॥ ३२ ॥
apyanante mahāvyomni pāraṃ prāptaiḥ śiroruhaiḥ ,
kurvāṇevātataṃ vāsaṃ carattimiradantinaḥ 32

32. Even in the endless great sky, her hairs, having reached beyond its limits, appeared as if creating a vast dwelling place for the wandering dark elephants.
उह्यन्ते मेरवो येन तेन निश्वासवायुना ।
घनघुंघुमदिक्चक्रगगनग्रामघोषिणा ॥ ३३ ॥
uhyante meravo yena tena niśvāsavāyunā ,
ghanaghuṃghumadikcakragaganagrāmaghoṣiṇā 33

33. The Meru mountains are carried by that very breath-wind, which resounds with a dense, rumbling sound throughout the circle of directions and the expanse of the sky.
घनमारुतफूत्कारक्ष्वेडगेयं प्रगायता ।
नियतानुनयेनेव चलिता सानुवृत्तिना ॥ ३४ ॥

34. She (the Cosmic Form) was moved, as if by a constant and complying entreaty, by that (wind) which sang loudly the song of the roaring and hissing dense winds.
ततो नृत्तवशावेशाद्वर्धमानशरीरिणी ।
मया दृष्टावधानेन गगनाभोगभूरिणा ॥ ३५ ॥
tato nṛttavaśāveśādvardhamānaśarīriṇī ,
mayā dṛṣṭāvadhānena gaganābhogabhūriṇā 35

35. Then, I saw her, whose body was continuously growing due to the trance of her dance, with an attention as vast as the expanse of the sky.
यावत्तयाऽऽवृऽता देहे हेलावलनसारया ।
माला मलयकेलाससह्यमन्दरमेरुभिः ॥ ३६ ॥

36. To the extent that a garland, composed of the (mountains) Malaya, Kailasa, Sahya, Mandara, and Meru, was encompassed within her body by her, who was characterized by the grace of her movements.
आसीत्तस्या युगान्ताभ्रमालिका पट्टपट्टिका ।
आदर्शमण्डलान्यङ्गे त्रीणि लोकान्तराणि च ॥ ३७ ॥
āsīttasyā yugāntābhramālikā paṭṭapaṭṭikā ,
ādarśamaṇḍalānyaṅge trīṇi lokāntarāṇi ca 37
37. āsīt tasyāḥ yugāntābhramālikā paṭṭapaṭṭikā
ādarśamaṇḍalāni aṅge trīṇi lokāntarāṇi ca

37. Her girdle was a garland of doomsday clouds. And on her body, the three intermediate worlds appeared as mirror-like discs.
कर्णयोर्हिमवन्मेरू रूप्यकाञ्चनमुद्रिके ।
ब्रह्माण्डघुंघुमैर्माला महती कटिमेखला ॥ ३८ ॥

38. In her ears were (Mount) Himavat and (Mount) Meru as silver and gold earrings. Her vast hip-girdle was a garland made of the tinkling sounds of the cosmic eggs (brahmāṇḍa).
स्रजः कुलाचलाः शृङ्गवनपत्तनगुच्छकाः ।
जरत्पुरवनद्वीपग्रामपेलवपल्लवाः ॥ ३९ ॥
srajaḥ kulācalāḥ śṛṅgavanapattanagucchakāḥ ,

39. Her garlands are the principal mountains, which appear as clusters of peaks, forests, and towns, and also as the delicate sprouts of old cities, forests, islands, and villages.
तस्या अङ्गेषु दृष्टानि पुराणि नगराणि च ।
ऋतवश्च त्रयो लोका मासाहोरात्रमालिकाः ॥ ४० ॥
tasyā aṅgeṣu dṛṣṭāni purāṇi nagarāṇi ca ,
ṛtavaśca trayo lokā māsāhorātramālikāḥ 40
40. tasyāḥ aṅgeṣu dṛṣṭāni purāṇi nagarāṇi ca
ṛtavaḥ ca trayaḥ lokāḥ māsa-ahorātra-mālikāḥ

40. In her limbs were seen cities and towns, and the seasons, the three worlds, and the sequences of months, days, and nights.
मुक्तालतादिकं नद्यः कालिन्दीत्त्रिपथादिकाः ।
धर्माधर्मावुभौ कर्णभूषणे चान्यकर्णयोः ॥ ४१ ॥
muktālatādikaṃ nadyaḥ kālindīttripathādikāḥ ,
dharmādharmāvubhau karṇabhūṣaṇe cānyakarṇayoḥ 41

41. Strings of pearls and similar ornaments, as well as rivers such as the Yamuna and the Ganga and others (were observed). Both (the principle of) (dharma) and (adharma) were her ear ornaments, as well as (those for) her other ears.
स्तनास्तस्यास्तु चत्वारः स्रवद्घर्मपयोलवाः ।
वेदाः सकलशास्त्रार्थचतुःसंस्थानचूचुकाः ॥ ४२ ॥

vedāḥ sakalaśāstrārthacatuḥsaṃsthānacūcukāḥ 42

42. Indeed, her four breasts exude drops of sweat and water. Their nipples are the Vedas, which embody the four established forms (or meanings) of all scriptures (śāstra).
त्रिशूलैः पट्टिशैः प्रासैः शरशक्त्यृष्टिमुद्गरैः ।
निर्यदायुधजालानि स्रग्दामानि बिभर्ति सा ॥ ४३ ॥
triśūlaiḥ paṭṭiśaiḥ prāsaiḥ śaraśaktyṛṣṭimudgaraiḥ ,
niryadāyudhajālāni sragdāmāni bibharti sā 43

43. She bears garlands (sragdāmāni) made of masses of weapons issuing forth, including tridents, sharp-edged spears, lances, arrows, spears (śakti), javelins (ṛṣṭi), and hammers.
चतुर्दशविधा भूतजातयो याः सुरादिकाः ।
तस्याः शरीरशालिन्यास्ता लोमावलयः स्थिताः ॥ ४४ ॥
caturdaśavidhā bhūtajātayo yāḥ surādikāḥ ,
tasyāḥ śarīraśālinyāstā lomāvalayaḥ sthitāḥ 44
44. caturdaśavidhāḥ bhūtajātayaḥ yāḥ surādikāḥ

44. The fourteen types of created beings, such as the gods and others, which reside in her body, are her very strands of hair.
तस्याश्च नगरग्रामगिरयो देहशायिनः ।
नृत्यन्त्या सह नृत्यन्ति पुनर्जन्म मुदेव ते ॥ ४५ ॥
tasyāśca nagaragrāmagirayo dehaśāyinaḥ ,
nṛtyantyā saha nṛtyanti punarjanma mudeva te 45
45. tasyāḥ ca nagaragrāmagirayaḥ dehaśāyinaḥ
nṛtyantyā saha nṛtyanti punarjanma muda iva te
45. tasyāḥ ca dehaśāyinaḥ nagaragrāmagirayaḥ te

45. And her cities, villages, and mountains, which reside within her body, dance along with her as she dances, experiencing a rebirth (punarjanma) as if filled with joy.
जङ्गमात्मैकमेवैतज्जगदस्थावरं तदा ।
नृत्यतीति मया ज्ञातं परलोके सुखं स्थितम् ॥ ४६ ॥
jaṅgamātmaikamevaitajjagadasthāvaraṃ tadā ,
nṛtyatīti mayā jñātaṃ paraloke sukhaṃ sthitam 46
46. jaṅgamātmaikam eva etat jagat asthāvaram tadā
nṛtyati iti mayā jñātam paraloke sukham sthitam
46. tadā mayā jñātam iti etat jagat jaṅgamātmaikam
eva asthāvaram nṛtyati paraloke sukham sthitam
46. At that time, I realized that this entire world, which possesses a singular mobile intrinsic nature (ātman) and is also stationary, dances; and that happiness is established in the other world.
निगीर्णं जगदङ्गस्थं कृत्वा तृप्तिमुपागता ।
परिनृत्यति सा मत्ता जगज्जीर्णाहि चातकी ॥ ४७ ॥
nigīrṇaṃ jagadaṅgasthaṃ kṛtvā tṛptimupāgatā ,
parinṛtyati sā mattā jagajjīrṇāhi cātakī 47
47. nigīrṇam jagat aṅgastham kṛtvā tṛptim upāgatā
parinṛtyati sā mattā jagat jīrṇa ahi cātakī
47. sā aṅgastham jagat nigīrṇam kṛtvā tṛptim upāgatā
sā mattā jagat jīrṇa ahi cātakī parinṛtyati
47. Having swallowed the world situated within her very being (aṅga), she achieved satisfaction. That intoxicated female cuckoo (cātakī), who has assimilated the world like a snake, dances all around.
आदर्शप्रतिबिम्बस्थमिवाभात्यखिलं जगत् ।
तस्या वपुषि विस्तीर्णे स्वरूपिणि सरूपधृक् ॥ ४८ ॥
ādarśapratibimbasthamivābhātyakhilaṃ jagat ,
tasyā vapuṣi vistīrṇe svarūpiṇi sarūpadhṛk 48
48. ādarśa-pratibimbastham iva ābhāti akhilam jagat
tasyāḥ vapuṣi vistīrṇe svarūpiṇi sarūpadhṛk
48. tasyāḥ vistīrṇe svarūpiṇi vapuṣi akhilam jagat
sarūpadhṛk ādarśa-pratibimbastham iva ābhāti
48. The entire world, bearing its own form, appears as if a reflection in a mirror, situated within her expansive, essential body (svarūpa).
सा न नृत्यति तत्सर्वं सशैलवनकाननम् ।
जगन्नृत्यति नानात्म मृत्वा पुनरुपागतम् ॥ ४९ ॥
sā na nṛtyati tatsarvaṃ saśailavanakānanam ,
jagannṛtyati nānātma mṛtvā punarupāgatam 49
49. sā na nṛtyati tat sarvam saśaila-vana-kānanam
jagat nṛtyati nānātma mṛtvā punar upāgatam
49. sā na nṛtyati tat saśaila-vana-kānanam nānātma
sarvam jagat mṛtvā punar upāgatam nṛtyati
49. She herself does not dance. Instead, that entire world - comprising mountains, forests, and groves, and possessing diverse forms (nānātman) - dances, having died and reappeared repeatedly.
तज्जगन्नर्तन चारु तद्देहादर्शसंस्थितम् ।
चिरं मया तदा दृष्टमविनष्टं पुनः स्थितम् ॥ ५० ॥
tajjagannartana cāru taddehādarśasaṃsthitam ,
ciraṃ mayā tadā dṛṣṭamavinaṣṭaṃ punaḥ sthitam 50
50. tat jagat nartanam cāru tat deha ādarśa-saṃsthitam
ciram mayā tadā dṛṣṭam avinaṣṭam punaḥ sthitam
50. mayā tadā ciram tat jagat nartanam cāru tat deha
ādarśa-saṃsthitam dṛṣṭam avinaṣṭam punaḥ sthitam
50. That charming dance of the world, which is situated in the mirror of her body, was observed by me for a long time then; it has remained, being indestructible.
विचलत्तारकाजालं भ्रमत्पर्वतमण्डलम् ।
मशकव्यूहवद्वातव्याधूतामरदानवम् ॥ ५१ ॥

51. It was a scene where the multitudes of stars trembled, where the masses of mountains revolved, and where gods and titans were tossed about by the wind like swarms of mosquitoes.
संग्रामोन्मुक्तचक्राभद्वीपार्णववृताम्बरम् ।
हेलाविवलनावर्त प्रौढशैलधरातृणम् ॥ ५२ ॥

52. It was a scene where the sky was enveloped by oceans and islands that appeared like discus weapons hurled in battle, and where mighty mountains, the earth, and even blades of grass were violently agitated as if caught in a playful whirlpool.
नीलगेघांशुकावृत्तिवातघुंघुमिताम्बरम् ।
काष्ठास्थ्यादिस्फुटास्फोटपटत्पटपटारवम् ॥ ५३ ॥
nīlageghāṃśukāvṛttivātaghuṃghumitāmbaram ,
kāṣṭhāsthyādisphuṭāsphoṭapaṭatpaṭapaṭāravam 53
53. nīlameghāṁśukāvṛttivātaghuṁghumitāmbaram

53. It was a scene where the sky, enveloped by blue cloud-garments, hummed with the sound of wind, and where there was a distinct cracking and splintering sound of wood, bone, and other such things.
जगत्पदार्थैर्व्यामिश्रैरमिश्रैर्मुकुरैर्यथा ।
व्याप्तमाभोगिभाकारैरङ्गैरङ्गभ्रमैस्तथा ॥ ५४ ॥
jagatpadārthairvyāmiśrairamiśrairmukurairyathā ,
vyāptamābhogibhākārairaṅgairaṅgabhramaistathā 54
54. jagat padārthaiḥ vyāmiśraiḥ amiśraiḥ mukuraiḥ iva
vyāptam ābhogibhākāraiḥ aṅgaiḥ aṅgabhramaiḥ tathā
54. yathā mukuraiḥ jagatpadārthaiḥ vyāmiśraiḥ amiśraiḥ,
tathā ābhogibhākāraiḥ aṅgaiḥ aṅgabhramaiḥ vyāptam
54. Just as with mirrors, both reflecting and not reflecting the objects of the world, this (scene/universe) is pervaded by extensive forms, and by the body parts and their movements.
मेरुर्नृत्यति लोलोच्चकुलाचलबृहद्भुजः ।
भ्रमदभ्रपटोपेतनमत्तनुतूनूरुहः ॥ ५५ ॥
merurnṛtyati loloccakulācalabṛhadbhujaḥ ,
bhramadabhrapaṭopetanamattanutūnūruhaḥ 55

55. Mount Meru dances, its vast, quivering arms being the lofty principal mountains, and its bending body-hairs (trees) enveloped by swirling cloud-garments.
अत्यजन्तः समुद्राश्च मर्यादामुद्रणं द्रुमाः ।
भूमेर्नभस्तलं यान्ति नभसो यान्ति भूतलम् ॥ ५६ ॥
atyajantaḥ samudrāśca maryādāmudraṇaṃ drumāḥ ,
bhūmernabhastalaṃ yānti nabhaso yānti bhūtalam 56
56. atyajantaḥ samudrāḥ ca maryādām udraṇam drumāḥ
bhūmeḥ nabhastalam yānti nabhasaḥ yānti bhūtalam
56. samudrāḥ ca drumāḥ maryādām udraṇam atyajantaḥ
bhūmeḥ nabhastalam yānti nabhasaḥ bhūtalam yānti
56. The oceans and trees, not abandoning their propensity to transgress boundaries, move from the surface of the earth to the sky and from the sky to the surface of the earth.
पुराणि घर्घरारावैर्दृश्यन्ते लुतितान्यधः ।
सगृहाट्टालवास्तव्यं न च किंचिल्लुठत्यधः ॥ ५७ ॥
purāṇi ghargharārāvairdṛśyante lutitānyadhaḥ ,
sagṛhāṭṭālavāstavyaṃ na ca kiṃcilluṭhatyadhaḥ 57

sagṛhāṭṭālavāstavyam na ca kiṃcit luṭati adhaḥ

57. Cities are seen tumbling down with crashing sounds, completely shattered below. Yet, nothing at all, including houses, watchtowers, and their residents, actually falls to the ground.
तस्यां भ्रमन्त्यां चतुरं चन्द्रार्कदिनरात्रयः ।
नखाग्रलेखालोकान्तर्भ्रान्तिकाञ्चनसूत्रवत् ॥ ५८ ॥
tasyāṃ bhramantyāṃ caturaṃ candrārkadinarātrayaḥ ,

58. As it (the Earth) gracefully revolves, the moons, suns, days, and nights move precisely, like a golden thread swirling within the apparent confines of a fingernail-tip's trace.
विभान्ति सृष्टयस्तस्या घर्माणि जलजालिकाः ।
इव नीहारहारिण्या नीलवारिदवाससः ॥ ५९ ॥
vibhānti sṛṣṭayastasyā gharmāṇi jalajālikāḥ ,
iva nīhārahāriṇyā nīlavāridavāsasaḥ 59
59. vibhānti sṛṣṭayaḥ tasyāḥ gharmāṇi jalajālikāḥ
iva nīhārahāriṇyā nīlavāridavāsasaḥ
59. tasyāḥ nīhārahāriṇyā nīlavāridavāsasaḥ
sṛṣṭayaḥ gharmāṇi jalajālikāḥ iva vibhānti
59. Her creations shine like beads of sweat or droplets of water on her, who is adorned with mist and clothed in dark blue clouds.
खमेव तस्याः संपन्नं कबरीमण्डलं बृहत् ।
पातालं चरणौ भूमिरुदरं बाहवो दिशः ॥ ६० ॥
khameva tasyāḥ saṃpannaṃ kabarīmaṇḍalaṃ bṛhat ,
pātālaṃ caraṇau bhūmirudaraṃ bāhavo diśaḥ 60

pātālau caraṇau bhūmiḥ udaram bāhavaḥ diśaḥ

60. Indeed, the vast sky became her braided hair, the netherworlds her two feet, the earth her belly, and the directions her arms.
तदानुभूत्ं नृत्यन्त्यास्तस्या वपुषि विस्तृते ।
हिमवन्मेरुस्रह्याद्यैर्दोलनभ्रममद्रिभिः ॥ ६२ ॥
tadānubhūtṃ nṛtyantyāstasyā vapuṣi vistṛte ,

62. Then, in her vast and dancing body, a sense of dizzying motion (dolanaśrama) was experienced by mountains such as Himavat, Meru, and Sahya.
द्वीपाब्धयोऽन्त्रवलयः पार्श्वकाः सर्वपर्वताः ।
प्राणापानावलीदोलाः पवनस्कन्धशालिकाः ॥ ६३ ॥

63. The islands and oceans became her intestinal coils, and all the mountains became her sides. Her vital breaths (prāṇa and apāna) were like swinging oscillations, or like rows of towering wind-columns.
सुरासुरोरगानीकरोमशाङ्गः शरीरकः ।
निस्पन्दं स्थातुमशकन्नसौ भ्रमति चक्रवत् ॥ ६४ ॥

64. The body, whose limbs were bristling with hosts of gods, demons, and serpents, was unable to remain still. Instead, that body revolved like a wheel.
नानाविभवविज्ञानयज्ञयज्ञोपवीतिनी ।
सा सरन्ती नभस्यासीद्धनघूत्कारघोषिणी ॥ ६५ ॥

65. She, flowing in the sky, was adorned with the sacred thread (yajñopavīta) of diverse prosperity, knowledge, and ritual Vedic rituals (yajña), and she resonated with a dense, rumbling sound.
तत्र भूतलमाकाशमाकाशमपि भूतलम् ।
प्रतिकृतिं भवत्यन्तर्न च किंचिद्विवर्तते ॥ ६६ ॥
tatra bhūtalamākāśamākāśamapi bhūtalam ,
pratikṛtiṃ bhavatyantarna ca kiṃcidvivartate 66
66. tatra bhūtalam ākāśam ākāśam api bhūtalam
pratikṛtim bhavati antar na ca kiñcit vivartate

66. There, the earth's surface becomes the sky, and the sky, in turn, becomes the earth's surface. Within, it all becomes a mere reflection, and yet, nothing truly transforms.
बृहन्नासागुहागेहनिर्गता घनघुंघुमाः ।
तत्रोग्रा वायवो वान्ति घोरघूत्कारकारिणः ॥ ६७ ॥
bṛhannāsāguhāgehanirgatā ghanaghuṃghumāḥ ,
tatrogrā vāyavo vānti ghoraghūtkārakāriṇaḥ 67

67. There, fierce winds blow, roaring with dense rumblings and dreadful roars, issuing forth from the great, cave-like abodes of the nostrils.
नभःकरशतैस्तस्याश्चतुरावृत्तिवर्तिभिः ।
भाति चण्डानिलोद्धूतैराकीर्णमिव पल्लवैः ॥ ६८ ॥
nabhaḥkaraśataistasyāścaturāvṛttivartibhiḥ ,
bhāti caṇḍāniloddhūtairākīrṇamiva pallavaiḥ 68
68. nabhaḥ karaśataiḥ tasyāḥ caturāvṛttivartibhiḥ

68. The sky appears radiant as if strewn with leaves. These are its hundreds of rays, which revolve in four cycles and are agitated by fierce winds.
तदङ्गजजगद्वस्तुजातभ्रमणसंभवात् ।
दृष्टिर्धीरापि मे मोहे सन्ना सेनेव संगरे ॥ ६९ ॥
tadaṅgajajagadvastujātabhramaṇasaṃbhavāt ,
dṛṣṭirdhīrāpi me mohe sannā seneva saṃgare 69
69. tat aṅgaja jagat vastu jāta bhramaṇa saṃbhavāt
dṛṣṭiḥ dhīrā api me mohe sannā senā iva saṃgare
69. tadaṅgajajagatvastujātabhramaṇasaṃbhavāt me

69. Due to the whirling motion of the multitude of worldly objects originating from that [cosmic] essence, my intellect (dṛṣṭi), even though steady, collapses into delusion (moha), just like an army becomes exhausted in battle.
प्रोह्यन्ते यन्त्रवच्छैला निपतन्ति नभश्चराः ।
लुठन्त्यमरगेहानि वलिते देहदर्पणे ॥ ७० ॥

70. When the mirror of the body is turned, mountains are swept away as if by a machine, celestial beings fall, and the abodes of the gods (amarageha) tumble.
मेरवः पर्णवद्व्यूढा मलयाः पल्लवा इव ।
हिमाद्रयो हिमकणा इवौर्व्योऽब्जलता इव ॥ ७१ ॥
meravaḥ parṇavadvyūḍhā malayāḥ pallavā iva ,

71. The Mount Meru mountains are dispersed like leaves, the Malaya mountains like young shoots, the Himalayas like snowflakes, and the vast lands like lotus creepers.
सह्या मह्यामिव खगा विन्ध्या विद्याधरा इव ।
वृक्षावर्ते भ्रमन्तोऽन्ता राजहंसा इवाम्बरे ॥ ७२ ॥
sahyā mahyāmiva khagā vindhyā vidyādharā iva ,
vṛkṣāvarte bhramanto'ntā rājahaṃsā ivāmbare 72

vṛkṣāvarte bhramantaḥ antāḥ rājahaṃsāḥ iva ambare
72. Her limbs wander as if the Sahya mountains were birds on the earth, and the Vindhya mountains were like Vidyādharas. They revolve amidst a whirl of trees, resembling royal swans in the sky.
द्वीपान्यपि तृणानीव समुदा वलया इव ।
सुरलोकालयः पद्मा आसंस्तद्देहवारिणि ॥ ७३ ॥
dvīpānyapi tṛṇānīva samudā valayā iva ,
suralokālayaḥ padmā āsaṃstaddehavāriṇi 73
73. dvīpāni api tṛṇāni iva samudrāḥ valayāḥ iva
suralokālayāḥ padmāḥ āsan tat dehavāriṇi
73. Even the islands were like blades of grass, and the oceans like bracelets. The abodes of the gods were lotuses within the water of her body.
विशदाकाशसंकाशे स्वप्नाञ्जनपुरोपमे ।
अङ्गे तस्या बृहज्जङ्घे पिण्डादित्यसमत्विषि ॥ ७४ ॥
viśadākāśasaṃkāśe svapnāñjanapuropame ,
aṅge tasyā bṛhajjaṅghe piṇḍādityasamatviṣi 74

74. On her limb, specifically her large thigh, which was like a clear sky, resembling a city seen in a dream or an illusory city, and possessed a radiance equal to a cluster of suns.
विन्ध्यो नृत्यति काञ्चनाचलवने सह्यश्च सह्यो गिरिः कैलासो मलयो महेन्द्रशिखरी क्रौञ्चाचलो मन्दरः ।
गोकर्णो गगनाङ्गणे वसुमती विद्याधराणां पुरं सर्वे जंगमतां गता वनभुवस्तस्याः शरीरे सदा ॥ ७५ ॥
vindhyo nṛtyati kāñcanācalavane sahyaśca sahyo giriḥ kailāso malayo mahendraśikharī krauñcācalo mandaraḥ ,
gokarṇo gaganāṅgaṇe vasumatī vidyādharāṇāṃ puraṃ sarve jaṃgamatāṃ gatā vanabhuvastasyāḥ śarīre sadā 75
75. vindhyaḥ nṛtyati kāñcanācalavane sahyaḥ ca sahyaḥ giriḥ
kailāsaḥ malayaḥ mahendraśikharī krauñcācalaḥ mandaraḥ
gokarṇaḥ gaganāṅgaṇe vasumatī vidyādharāṇām puram
sarve jaṅgamatām gatāḥ vanabhuvaḥ tasyāḥ śarīre sadā
75. The Vindhya mountain dances in the golden mountain's forest, and the Sahya mountain, Kailasa, Malaya, the Mahendra peak, Krauñca mountain, Mandara, and Gokarna – these, along with the Earth (Vasumatī), the city of the Vidyādharas, and all forest regions – always achieved mobility within her body, as if in the courtyard of the sky.
अब्धिर्नृत्यति पर्वते गिरिरपि प्रोच्चैर्नभःकोटरे व्योमापीन्दुदिवाकरैः क्व चलितं भूमेरधस्ताद्गतम् ।
सद्वीपाचलपत्तनो वनगणः प्रोत्कीर्णपुष्पो दिवि व्यालोलं जगदम्बुधाविव तृणं दिक्चक्रके भ्राम्यति ॥ ७६ ॥
abdhirnṛtyati parvate girirapi proccairnabhaḥkoṭare vyomāpīndudivākaraiḥ kva calitaṃ bhūmeradhastādgatam ,
sadvīpācalapattano vanagaṇaḥ protkīrṇapuṣpo divi vyālolaṃ jagadambudhāviva tṛṇaṃ dikcakrake bhrāmyati 76

sadvīpācala-pattanaḥ protkīrṇa-puṣpaḥ vanagaṇaḥ divi
[asti] vyālolam jagat ambudhau tṛṇam iva dikcakrake bhrāmyati
76. The ocean dances on the mountain; and the mountain, towering high, resides in the hollow of the sky. Where has the sky, along with the moon and sun, gone, having moved beneath the earth? The multitude of forests, adorned with islands, mountains, and cities, their flowers scattered, are now in the sky. The restless world (jagat) rotates in the circle of directions, just like a blade of grass (tṛṇa) in the ocean.
व्योम्नि भ्रमन्ति गिरयोऽम्बुधयो दिगन्ते लोकान्तराणि पुरपत्तनमण्डलानि ।
नद्यः सरांसि मुकुरान्तरिव प्रवृद्धवातावकीर्णतृणविक्रमणक्रमेण ॥ ७७ ॥

77. Mountains wander in the sky; oceans at the ends of the directions; other worlds and circles of cities and towns; rivers and lakes - all move as if within a mirror, in the manner of blades of grass scattered by mighty winds.
मत्स्याश्चरन्ति च मरौ वरवारिणीव व्योम्नि स्थिराणि नगराणि भुवीव भान्ति ।
खे भूधरा गगनसंक्षयवारिवाहमुत्पातवातपरिवृत्तगिरिस्थितं तत् ॥ ७८ ॥
matsyāścaranti ca marau varavāriṇīva vyomni sthirāṇi nagarāṇi bhuvīva bhānti ,
khe bhūdharā gaganasaṃkṣayavārivāhamutpātavātaparivṛttagiristhitaṃ tat 78
78. matsyāḥ caranti ca marau vara-vāriṇī iva
vyomni sthirāṇi nagarāṇi bhuvi iva bhānti
khe bhūdharāḥ gagana-saṃkṣaya-vārivāham
utpāta-vāta-parivṛtta-giri-sthitam tat
78. matsyāḥ ca marau vara-vāriṇī iva caranti
sthirāṇi nagarāṇi vyomni bhuvi iva bhānti khe
bhūdharāḥ tat gagana-saṃkṣaya-vārivāham
utpāta-vāta-parivṛtta-giri-sthitam [iva dṛśyante]
78. And fish wander in the desert as if in excellent water. Stable cities shine in the sky as if they were on earth. Mountains in the sky resemble that cloud of cosmic dissolution, standing like a mountain overturned by catastrophic winds.
ऋक्षोत्करो भ्रमति दीपसहस्रयन्त्रचक्रक्रमेण मणिवर्षणवेगचारुः ।
अन्तर्बहिश्च परितः प्रणयेन मुक्त विद्याधरामरगणैरिव पुष्पवर्षम् ॥ ७९ ॥

79. ṛkṣa-utkaraḥ dīpa-sahasra-yantra-cakra-krameṇa
maṇi-varṣaṇa-vega-cāruḥ [san] bhramati
antaḥ bahiḥ ca paritaḥ vidyādhara-amara-gaṇaiḥ
praṇayena muktam puṣpa-varṣam iva [bhramati]
79. The cluster of stars (ṛkṣa) revolves, beautiful with the speed of raining gems, in the manner of a wheel-machine with a thousand lamps. It wanders both inside and outside, all around, like a shower of flowers released with affection by multitudes of Vidyādharas and gods.
संहारसर्गनिचया दिनरात्रिभागे बिन्दूपमा रजतयोर्दिवसोत्कराश्च ।
कृष्णाः सिताश्च परितोऽमलशुक्लकृष्णस्वादर्शमण्डलवदाकुलमुल्लसन्ति ॥ ८० ॥

80. The accumulations of cosmic dissolution and creation, appearing like drops, along with the masses of days - both dark and white, indicative of their dual nature - within the divisions of day and night, shine forth vibrantly all around, like pristine black and white mirror discs.
रत्नानि भास्करनिशाकरमण्डलानि तारोत्करास्तरलमण्डलकान्तिहाराः ।
स्वच्छाम्बराणि वलितानि महाम्बराणि कुर्वन्त्यनारतमनल्पमलातलेखाः ॥ ८१ ॥

81. Jewels, the discs of the sun and moon, masses of stars like necklaces of flickering, disk-like radiance, clear celestial expanses, and vast, enveloping skies - all unceasingly create numerous streaks of light.
कल्पान्तकालविलुठत्त्रिजगन्मणीनि व्यावर्तनैर्झगिति जातझणज्झणानि ।
तेजांसि झंकृततयोर्ध्वमधश्च यान्ति नानाविधानि गुणवन्ति विभूषणानि ॥ ८२ ॥

82. kalpāntakālaviluṭhattrijaganmaṇīni,
vyāvartanaiḥ jhagiti jātajhaṇajjhaṇāni nānāvidhāni guṇavanti vibhūṣaṇāni tejāṃsi jhaṅkṛtatayā ūrdhvam adhaḥ ca yānti
82. The various and excellent ornaments and splendors - which are like the jewels of the three worlds tumbling during the time of cosmic dissolution, and which instantly produce a jingling sound through their rotations - move upwards and downwards with a humming resonance.
संग्राममत्तभटखङ्गमरीचिवीचि श्यामायमानसकलातपवासराणाम् ।
व्यावृत्तिभिर्विलुठतामपि सुस्थिराणामाकर्ण्यते कलकलो जनमण्डलानाम् ॥ ८३ ॥

83. The clamor of the masses of people is heard - people who, though constantly moving through various activities, remain steadfast - even as their days are darkened and all sunshine is obscured by the shimmering waves of sword-rays from warriors frenzied in battle.
ब्रह्मेन्द्रविष्णुहरवह्निरवीन्दुपूर्वा देवासुराः परिविवृत्तिभिरापतन्तः ।
अन्येऽन्य एव विविधा उपयान्ति यान्ति वातावधूतमशकाशनिविभ्रमेण ॥ ८४ ॥

84. Deities like Brahmā, Indra, Viṣṇu, Śiva, Fire, the Sun, and the Moon, along with gods and demons, arrive through their continuous transformations. Diverse beings, appearing one after another, come and go, much like a swarm of flies scattered by the wind or a sudden flash of lightning.
संहारसर्गसुखदुःखभवाभवेहानीहानिषेधविधिजन्ममृतिभ्रमाद्याः ।

saṃhārasargasukhaduḥkhabhavābhavehānīhāniṣedhavidhijanmamṛtibhramādyāḥ bhāvāḥ tatra vyāmiśratām upagatāḥ api,
sārdham ca pṛthak sadaiva vilasanti.
85. In creation, states (bhāvāḥ) such as destruction and creation, pleasure and pain, existence and non-existence, activity and inactivity, prohibition and injunction, birth and death, illusion, and so on, always manifest, both together and distinctly. They do so even though these states (bhāvāḥ) have become intertwined within that creation.
भावोद्भवस्थितिविपत्करणभ्रमाणां संहारसर्गभुवनावनिविभ्रमाणाम् ।
मिथ्यैव खे प्रकचतां खशरीरकाणां संलक्ष्यतेऽत्र न मनागपि नाम संख्या ॥ ८६ ॥

sā (saṃkhyā) mithyā eva.
atra (tasyāḥ saṃkhyāyāḥ) manāk api nāma na saṃlakṣyate.
86. The illusions of the arising, existence, and passing away of states; and the illusions of creation, destruction, and protection of worlds - of these manifestations, which shine forth in space (khe) as if they had spatial bodies (khaśarīrakāṇām), not even a fraction can truly be counted here, for they are all merely illusory (mithyā).
उत्पातशान्तिमरणोत्सवयुद्धसाम्यविद्वेषरागभयविश्वसनादि तत्र ।
एकत्र कोश इव रत्नचयो विभाति नानारसाप्रतिघसर्गपरम्परं तत् ॥ ८७ ॥

87. In that creation (tatra), all these - portents and their pacification, deaths and celebrations, wars and states of peace, hatred and attachment, fear and trust, and similar pairs - shine forth together like a treasury (kośa) filled with various jewels (ratnacaya). This whole is an unceasing succession of creations (sarga) that are irresistible and imbued with diverse flavors or sentiments (nānārasa).
तस्याश्चिदम्बरमये वपुषि स्वभावभूतास्फुटानुभवभावजगद्व्यवस्थाः ।
सर्वक्षया मलिनदृक्कलिताम्बरस्थकेशोण्ड्रकस्फुरणवत्परितः स्फुरन्ति ॥ ८८ ॥
tasyāścidambaramaye vapuṣi svabhāvabhūtāsphuṭānubhavabhāvajagadvyavasthāḥ ,
sarvakṣayā malinadṛkkalitāmbarasthakeśoṇḍrakasphuraṇavatparitaḥ sphuranti 88

svabhāva-bhūta-asphuṭa-anubhava-bhāva-jagat-vyavasthāḥ
sarva-kṣayāḥ malina-dṛk-kalita-ambara-stha-keśoṇḍraka-sphuraṇa-vat

88. tasyaḥ cit-ambara-maye vapuṣi sarva-kṣayāḥ
svabhāva-bhūta-asphuṭa-anubhava-bhāva-jagat-vyavasthāḥ
malina-dṛk-kalita-ambara-stha-keśoṇḍraka-sphuraṇa-vat
paritaḥ sphuranti
88. In her body, which is composed of consciousness-space, the arrangements of the world, whose nature is subtle (asphuṭa) states of experience, naturally exist, and are all perishable. They appear all around like the flickering of hair-particles (dust motes) seen in the sky by a blurred eye.
जगत्संक्षुब्धमक्षुब्धं दृश्यते स्थितिसंस्थिति ।
संचाल्यमानमुकुरप्रतिबिम्ब इवास्थितम् ॥ ८९ ॥
jagatsaṃkṣubdhamakṣubdhaṃ dṛśyate sthitisaṃsthiti ,
saṃcālyamānamukurapratibimba ivāsthitam 89
89. jagat saṃkṣubdham akṣubdham dṛśyate sthiti-saṃsthiti

89. The world (jagat) is seen to be agitated and yet unagitated, unstable, and (existing) in a state of both stability and full establishment/change, just like a reflection in a moving mirror.
नृत्यस्फुरत्प्रतापान्तर्जगदर्थाः प्रतिक्षणम् ।
स्थितिं त्यजन्ति गृह्णन्ति बालसंकल्पसर्गवत् ॥ ९० ॥
nṛtyasphuratpratāpāntarjagadarthāḥ pratikṣaṇam ,
sthitiṃ tyajanti gṛhṇanti bālasaṃkalpasargavat 90
90. nṛtya-sphurat-pratāpa-antar jagat-arthāḥ pratikṣaṇam
sthitim tyajanti gṛhṇanti bāla-saṃkalpa-sarga-vat

90. The objects of the world (jagat), within the pulsating manifestation of brilliance or power, constantly abandon one state and assume another, like a creation born from a child's imagination (saṃkalpa).
क्रियाशक्तिः शरीरेऽन्तः पूर्यमाणा अनारतम् ।
राशीभूय विशीर्यन्ते जगन्मुद्गकणोत्कराः ॥ ९१ ॥
kriyāśaktiḥ śarīre'ntaḥ pūryamāṇā anāratam ,
rāśībhūya viśīryante jaganmudgakaṇotkarāḥ 91
91. kriyā-śaktiḥ śarīre antaḥ pūryamāṇā anāratam
rāśībhūya viśīryante jagat-mudga-kaṇa-utkarāḥ
91. kriyā-śaktiḥ śarīre antaḥ pūryamāṇā anāratam
jagat-mudga-kaṇa-utkarāḥ rāśībhūya viśīryante
91. The power of action (kriyā-śakti) is constantly being filled within the body; meanwhile, the multitudes of world-particles (jagat), like tiny mung beans, having accumulated, disintegrate.
क्षणमालक्ष्यते किंचिन्न किंचिदपि सा क्षणम् ।
क्षणमङ्गुष्ठमात्रैव क्षणमाकाशपूरिणी ॥ ९२ ॥
kṣaṇamālakṣyate kiṃcinna kiṃcidapi sā kṣaṇam ,
kṣaṇamaṅguṣṭhamātraiva kṣaṇamākāśapūriṇī 92
92. kṣaṇam ālakṣyate kiṃcit na kiṃcit api sā kṣaṇam
kṣaṇam aṅguṣṭhamātrā eva kṣaṇam ākāśapūriṇī
92. sā kṣaṇam kiṃcit ālakṣyate,
kṣaṇam api na kiṃcit (ālakṣyate); kṣaṇam eva aṅguṣṭhamātrā,
kṣaṇam ākāśapūriṇī (bhavati).
92. For a moment she is perceived as something, and then for a moment she is not perceived at all. For a moment she is merely the size of a thumb, and for another moment she fills the entire sky.
यस्मात्सा सकला देवी संविच्छक्तिर्जगन्मयी ।
अनन्ता परमाकाशकोशशुद्धशरीरिणी ॥ ९३ ॥
yasmātsā sakalā devī saṃvicchaktirjaganmayī ,
anantā paramākāśakośaśuddhaśarīriṇī 93
93. yasmāt sā sakalā devī saṃvit śaktiḥ jagatmayī
anantā parama ākāśa kośa śuddha śarīriṇī
93. yasmāt sā sakalā devī saṃvit śaktiḥ jagatmayī (asti),
(sā) anantā parama ākāśa kośa śuddha śarīriṇī (ca asti).
93. This is because she, the complete Goddess, is the power of consciousness (śakti) that pervades the universe. She is infinite, her pure form (śarīra) being the very sheath of the supreme (param) space (ākāśa).
कालत्रयस्थितजगत्त्रितयान्तरी हि चित्सा तथा कचति तेन यथास्थितेन ।
रूपेण चित्रकृदुदारमनःस्थचित्रसंसारजालसदृशेन कचज्जवेन ॥ ९४ ॥
kālatrayasthitajagattritayāntarī hi citsā tathā kacati tena yathāsthitena ,
rūpeṇa citrakṛdudāramanaḥsthacitrasaṃsārajālasadṛśena kacajjavena 94
94. kālatrayasthita jagattritaya antarī hi
cit sā tathā kacchati tena yathāsthitena
rūpeṇa citrakṛt udāra manaḥstha
citra saṃsārajāla sadṛśena kaccat javena
94. hi sā cit kālatrayasthita jagattritaya antarī tathā yathāsthitena rūpeṇa citrakṛt udāra manaḥstha citra saṃsārajāla sadṛśena kaccat javena tena kacchati.
94. For indeed, that consciousness (cit) manifests within the three worlds, which are situated in the three divisions of time, doing so in its own existing form. It appears with a rapid manifestation, resembling the wondrous net of transmigratory existence (saṃsāra) that is present within the generous mind of the creator.
सर्वात्मकैकवपुरेकचिदात्मकत्वात्संशान्तखैकवपुरेकचिदात्मतत्वात् ।
एवं निमेषणसमुन्मिषितैकरूपं सा बिभ्रती वपुरनन्तमनादि भाति ॥ ९५ ॥
sarvātmakaikavapurekacidātmakatvātsaṃśāntakhaikavapurekacidātmatatvāt ,
evaṃ nimeṣaṇasamunmiṣitaikarūpaṃ sā bibhratī vapuranantamanādi bhāti 95
95. sarvātmaka eka vapuḥ eka cit ātmakatvāt
saṃśānta kha eka vapuḥ eka cit ātmatatvāt
evam nimeṣaṇa samunmiṣita eka
rūpam sā bibhratī vapuḥ anantam anādi bhāti
95. sā sarvātmaka eka vapuḥ eka cit ātmakatvāt,
saṃśānta kha eka vapuḥ eka cit ātmatatvāt,
evam nimeṣaṇa samunmiṣita eka rūpam anantam anādi vapuḥ bibhratī bhāti.
95. Because she is of the nature of a single consciousness (cit), whose one form (vapus) is all-pervading, and because she embodies the reality (tattva) of a single consciousness (cit), whose one form (vapus) is tranquil like space (kha), she thus shines, bearing an infinite and beginningless form that simultaneously closes and opens.
तस्यां विभाति तदनन्तशिलात्मकोशे लेखाब्जचक्ररचनादिवदेव दृश्यम् ।
व्योमात्मकं गगनमात्रशरीरवत्यां चित्त्वाद्द्रवज्जलधिकोश इवोर्मिलेखा ॥ ९६ ॥
tasyāṃ vibhāti tadanantaśilātmakośe lekhābjacakraracanādivadeva dṛśyam ,
vyomātmakaṃ gaganamātraśarīravatyāṃ cittvāddravajjaladhikośa ivormilekhā 96
96. tasyām vibhāti tat anantaśilātma-kośe
lekhābjacakra-racanādivat eva dṛśyam
vyomātmakam gaganamātra-śarīravatyām
cittvāt dravat-jaladhi-kośaḥ iva ūrmilekhā

tasyām anantaśilātma-kośe lekhābjacakra-racanādivat
eva tat dṛśyam vibhāti
cittvāt dravat-jaladhi-kośaḥ iva ūrmilekhā
96. In her, whose body is merely space and whose intrinsic nature (ātman) is the sky, a visible phenomenon shines. It appears within that infinite sheath, whose intrinsic nature (ātman) is stone, resembling the arrangements of lines, lotuses, and circles. Due to her consciousness, it is like a line of waves within a fluid ocean-shell.
महती भैरवी देवी नृत्यन्त्यापूरिताम्बरा ।
तस्य कल्पान्तरुद्रस्य सा पुरो भैरवाकृतेः ॥ ९७ ॥
mahatī bhairavī devī nṛtyantyāpūritāmbarā ,
tasya kalpāntarudrasya sā puro bhairavākṛteḥ 97
97. mahatī bhairavī devī nṛtyantī āpūritāmbarā

97. The great goddess Bhairavi (Bhairavī), dancing and filling the sky, stands before that Rudra (Rudra) whose form is terrifying, appearing at the dissolution of a cosmic cycle.
शिरोमन्दाश्रितोग्राग्निदग्धस्थाणुवनावनिः ।
कल्पान्तवातव्याधूता वनमालेव नृत्यति ॥ ९८ ॥
śiromandāśritogrāgnidagdhasthāṇuvanāvaniḥ ,
kalpāntavātavyādhūtā vanamāleva nṛtyati 98

98. The earth, with its forests and pillar-like trees burnt by the fierce fire residing on the orb of his head, dances like a forest garland, shaken by the cosmic wind at the end of a cosmic cycle.
कुद्दालोलूखलबृसीफलकुम्भकरण्डकैः ।
मुसलोदञ्चनस्थालीस्तम्भैः स्रग्दामधारिणी ॥ ९९ ॥
kuddālolūkhalabṛsīphalakumbhakaraṇḍakaiḥ ,

99. She (the goddess), bearing garlands of flowers, is associated with spades, mortars, cushions, fruits, pots, and baskets; and with pestles, buckets, plates, and pillars.
एवंविधानां स्रग्दामजालानां कुसुमोत्करम् ।
किरन्ती संसृजन्तीव नृत्तक्षुब्धं क्षयक्षतम् ॥ १०० ॥
evaṃvidhānāṃ sragdāmajālānāṃ kusumotkaram ,
kirantī saṃsṛjantīva nṛttakṣubdhaṃ kṣayakṣatam 100

100. Scattering masses of flowers from garlands and networks of such a kind, she seemed to be creating destruction and ruin, agitated by her dance.
वन्द्यमानस्तया सोऽपि तथैवाकाशभैरवः ।
तथैव वितताकारस्तदोच्चैः परिनृत्यति ॥ १०१ ॥
vandyamānastayā so'pi tathaivākāśabhairavaḥ ,
tathaiva vitatākārastadoccaiḥ parinṛtyati 101
101. vandyamānaḥ tayā saḥ api tathaiva ākāśabhairavaḥ
tathaiva vitatākāraḥ tadā uccaiḥ parinṛtyati
101. vandyamānaḥ tayā saḥ api ākāśabhairavaḥ vitatākāraḥ
tathaiva tathaiva tadā uccaiḥ parinṛtyati
101. Being saluted by her, that Bhairava of the sky (ākāśabhairava) also, similarly, with his form expanded, then dances loudly.
डिंबं डिबं सुडिंबँ पच पच सहसाझम्य झम्यं प्रझम्यं नृत्यन्ती शब्दवाद्यैः स्रजमुरसि शिरःशेखरं तार्क्ष्यपक्षैः ।
पूर्णं रक्तासवानां यममहिषमहाशृङ्गमादाय पाणौ पायाद्वो वन्द्यमानः प्रलयमुदितया भैरवः कालरात्र्या ॥ १०२ ॥
ḍiṃbaṃ ḍibaṃ suḍiṃbaṃ paca paca sahasājhamya jhamyaṃ prajhamyaṃ nṛtyantī śabdavādyaiḥ srajamurasi śiraḥśekharaṃ tārkṣyapakṣaiḥ ,
pūrṇaṃ raktāsavānāṃ yamamahiṣamahāśṛṅgamādāya pāṇau pāyādvo vandyamānaḥ pralayamuditayā bhairavaḥ kālarātryā 102
102. ḍiṃbam ḍibam suḍiṃbam paca paca sahasājhamya jhamyam prajhamyam
nṛtyantī śabdavādyaiḥ srajam urasi śiraḥśekharam
tārkṣyapakṣaiḥ pūrṇam raktāsavānām yamamahiṣamahāśṛṅgam ādāya
pāṇau pāyāt vaḥ vandyamānaḥ pralayamuditayā bhairavaḥ kālarātryā

102. May Bhairava protect you! He is praised by Kālarātrī, who is joyful in the cosmic dissolution. She dances, producing sounds of 'ḍiṃba ḍiba suḍiṃba', 'paca paca', and 'sahasā jhamya jhamya prajhamya' with musical instruments, her chest adorned with a garland and her head with a crest made of Garuḍa's wings. In her hand, she holds the great horn of Yama's buffalo, brimming with blood-wine.
