Śrī Rāma said: O Lord, best among the knowers of the Self (ātman), if this is the situation, what indeed is that extraordinary or unprecedented excellence that belongs to a person who is liberated while living (jīvanmukta) and possesses true wisdom?

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: In some particular aspect, an exceptional intellect (dhīḥ) arises for the knower. Such a person, ever content (nityatṛpta) and with a tranquil Self (ātman) (praśāntātmā), abides solely in the Self (ātman).

Actions such as flying through the sky have been abundantly performed by those perfected through mantras, those perfected through austerity (tapas), and those perfected through tantras. What unprecedented quality (apūrvatā) could there be in that?

Even powers like "aṇimā" (the ability to become minute) have been abundantly attained by such persons (those perfected through mantras, austerity (tapas), etc.). This is because these powers are achieved through strenuous effort by them, and not by the knowers of the Self (ātman).

This indeed is his special characteristic: he is not like those with dull intellects. Because he abandons attachment everywhere, his mind is pure and free from desire. Possessing such a great intellect, he does not become absorbed in worldly objects.

Indeed, this alone is the true characteristic of one whose form is beyond attributes, who is liberated from the long-standing delusion of the cycle of rebirth (saṃsāra), and who is a knower of Reality (Brahman): that there is a skillful and constant diminishing, day by day, of the afflictions of lust, anger, sorrow, delusion (moha), and greed.
