पुरा मे ब्रह्मणा प्रोक्तं सर्वं तत्कथयानघ ।
यदिदं तत्प्रवक्ष्यामि त्वयि पृच्छति राघव ॥ १ ॥

1. Sri Vasistha said: "O sinless one, tell [me] all that was spoken to me by Brahma in the past. O Raghava, I shall now relate to you this very thing, since you are asking."
पुरा मया हि भगवान्पृष्टः कमलसंभवः ।
इमे कथमुपायान्ति ब्रह्मन्सर्गगणा इति ॥ २ ॥
purā mayā hi bhagavānpṛṣṭaḥ kamalasaṃbhavaḥ ,
ime kathamupāyānti brahmansargagaṇā iti 2
2. purā mayā hi bhagavān pṛṣṭaḥ kamalasambhavaḥ
ime katham upāyānti brahman sargagaṇāḥ iti
2. purā hi mayā bhagavān kamalasambhavaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ.
iti (aham apṛccham): "brahman,
ime sargagaṇāḥ katham upāyānti?"
2. Indeed, long ago, I questioned the revered, lotus-born (Brahma): "O Brahma, how do these numerous cycles of creation (sarga) arise?"
तदुपाश्रुत्य भगवान्ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः ।
ऐन्दवाख्यानसहितं मामुवाच बृहद्वचः ॥ ३ ॥
tadupāśrutya bhagavānbrahmā lokapitāmahaḥ ,
aindavākhyānasahitaṃ māmuvāca bṛhadvacaḥ 3
3. tat upāśrutya bhagavān brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ
aindavākhyānasahitam mām uvāca bṛhat vacaḥ
3. bhagavān lokapitāmahaḥ brahmā tat upāśrutya
aindavākhyānasahitam bṛhat vacaḥ mām uvāca
3. Upon hearing that, the venerable Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds, spoke profound words to me, which included the lunar narrative (aindava ākhyāna).
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
सर्वं हि मन एवेदमित्थं स्फुरति भूतिमत् ।
जलं जलाशयस्फारैर्विचित्रैश्चक्रकैरिव ॥ ४ ॥
brahmovāca ,
sarvaṃ hi mana evedamitthaṃ sphurati bhūtimat ,
jalaṃ jalāśayasphārairvicitraiścakrakairiva 4
4. brahmā uvāca sarvam hi manaḥ eva idam ittham sphurati
bhūtimat jalam jalāśayasphāraiḥ vicitraiḥ cakrakaiḥ iva
4. brahmā uvāca hi idam sarvam manaḥ eva ittham bhūtimat sphurati,
jalāśayasphāraiḥ vicitraiḥ cakrakaiḥ iva jalam
4. Brahmā said: "Indeed, all this [world], endowed with power, manifests thus as merely the mind, just as water appears as diverse, vast ripples in a reservoir."
दिनादौ संप्रबुद्धस्य संसारं सृष्टुमिच्छतः ।
पुराकल्पे हि कस्मिश्चिच्छृणु किं वृत्तमङ्ग मे ॥ ५ ॥
dinādau saṃprabuddhasya saṃsāraṃ sṛṣṭumicchataḥ ,
purākalpe hi kasmiścicchṛṇu kiṃ vṛttamaṅga me 5
5. dina ādau samprabuddhasya saṃsāram sraṣṭum icchataḥ
purākalpe hi kasmin cit śṛṇu kim vṛttam aṅga me
5. aṅga,
kasmin cit purākalpe,
dina ādau samprabuddhasya saṃsāram sraṣṭum icchataḥ me,
kim vṛttam,
hi śṛṇu
5. Oh dear one, listen to what happened to me in some ancient creation-cycle (kalpa), at the beginning of a day when I had fully awakened and desired to create the cycle of transmigration (saṃsāra).
कदाचिदखिलं सर्गं संहृत्य दिवसक्षये ।
एक एवाहमेकाग्रः स्वस्थस्तामनयं निशाम् ॥ ६ ॥
kadācidakhilaṃ sargaṃ saṃhṛtya divasakṣaye ,
eka evāhamekāgraḥ svasthastāmanayaṃ niśām 6
6. kadācit akhilam sargam saṃhṛtya divasakṣaye
ekaḥ eva aham ekāgraḥ svasthaḥ tām anayam niśām
6. kadācit divasakṣaye akhilam sargam saṃhṛtya,
ekaḥ eva aham ekāgraḥ svasthaḥ tām niśām anayam
6. Once, at the end of a cosmic day, having completely withdrawn all creation, I alone, single-mindedly concentrated and tranquil, passed that night.
निशान्ते संप्रबुद्धात्मा संध्यां कृत्वा यथाविधि ।
प्रजाः स्रष्टुं दृशौ स्फारे व्योम्नि योजितवानहम् ॥ ७ ॥
niśānte saṃprabuddhātmā saṃdhyāṃ kṛtvā yathāvidhi ,
prajāḥ sraṣṭuṃ dṛśau sphāre vyomni yojitavānaham 7
7. niśānte samprabuddhātmā sandhyām kṛtvā yathāvidhi
prajāḥ sraṣṭum dṛśau sphāre vyomni yojitavān aham
7. aham samprabuddhātmā niśānte yathāvidhi sandhyām
kṛtvā prajāḥ sraṣṭum sphāre dṛśau vyomni yojitavān
7. At dawn, I, with a fully awakened self (ātman), having performed the twilight prayers according to the prescribed rites, fixed my wide-open eyes upon the sky to create beings.
यावत्पश्यामि गगनं न तमोभिर्न तेजसा ।
व्याप्तमत्यन्तविततं शून्यमन्तविवर्जितम् ॥ ८ ॥
yāvatpaśyāmi gaganaṃ na tamobhirna tejasā ,
vyāptamatyantavitataṃ śūnyamantavivarjitam 8
8. yāvat paśyāmi gaganam na tamobhiḥ na tejasā
vyāptam atyantavitatam śūnyam antavivarjitam
8. yāvat aham gaganam na tamobhiḥ na tejasā vyāptam
atyantavitatam śūnyam antavivarjitam paśyāmi
8. As I observed the sky, I found it not pervaded by darknesses nor by light, but extremely vast, empty, and boundless.
सर्गं संकल्पयामीति मतिं निश्चित्य तन्मया ।
समवेक्षितुमारब्धं शुद्धं सूक्ष्मेण चेतसा ॥ ९ ॥
sargaṃ saṃkalpayāmīti matiṃ niścitya tanmayā ,
samavekṣitumārabdhaṃ śuddhaṃ sūkṣmeṇa cetasā 9
9. sargam saṅkalpayāmi iti matim niścitya tanmayā
samavekṣitum ārabdham śuddham sūkṣmeṇa chetasā
9. sargam saṅkalpayāmi iti matim niścitya,
tanmayā śuddham sūkṣmeṇa chetasā samavekṣitum ārabdham
9. Having firmly resolved, 'I shall create a creation (sarga),' I then, being absorbed in that (thought), began to purely observe (it) with a subtle consciousness.
अथाहं दृष्टवांस्तत्र मनसा विततेऽम्बरे ।
पृथक्स्थितान्महारम्भान्सर्गान्स्थितिनिरर्गलान् ॥ १० ॥
athāhaṃ dṛṣṭavāṃstatra manasā vitate'mbare ,
pṛthaksthitānmahārambhānsargānsthitinirargalān 10
10. atha aham dṛṣṭavān tatra manasā vitate ambare
pṛthaksthitān mahārambhān sargān sthitinirargalān
10. atha aham tatra vitate ambare manasā pṛthaksthitān
mahārambhān sthitinirargalān sargān dṛṣṭavān
10. Then I saw there, with my mind, in the vast sky, distinct creations (sarga), great enterprises, unobstructed in their duration.
तेषु मत्प्रतिबिम्बाभाः पद्मकोशनिवासिनः ।
राजहंसान्समारूढाः संस्थिता दश पद्मजाः ॥ ११ ॥
teṣu matpratibimbābhāḥ padmakośanivāsinaḥ ,
rājahaṃsānsamārūḍhāḥ saṃsthitā daśa padmajāḥ 11
11. teṣu mat-pratibimbābhāḥ padma-kośa-nivāsinaḥ
rāja-haṃsān samārūḍhāḥ saṃsthitāḥ daśa padmajāḥ
11. daśa padmajāḥ teṣu padma-kośa-nivāsinaḥ
mat-pratibimbābhāḥ rāja-haṃsān samārūḍhāḥ saṃsthitāḥ
11. The ten lotus-born ones, residing within the lotus petals, appeared as reflections of me, mounted upon royal swans.
पृथक्स्थितेषु सर्गेषु तेषूद्यद्भूतपङ्क्तिषु ।
जलजालेषु शुद्धेषु जगत्सु जलदायिषु ॥ १२ ॥
pṛthaksthiteṣu sargeṣu teṣūdyadbhūtapaṅktiṣu ,
jalajāleṣu śuddheṣu jagatsu jaladāyiṣu 12
12. pṛthak-sthiteṣu sargeṣu teṣu udyat-bhūta-paṅktiṣu
jala-jāleṣu śuddheṣu jagatsu jala-dāyiṣu
12. teṣu pṛthak-sthiteṣu sargeṣu udyat-bhūta-paṅktiṣu
śuddheṣu jala-jāleṣu jala-dāyiṣu jagatsu
12. In those separately existing creations, with their emerging rows of beings, in pure networks of water, in worlds providing water...
प्रवहन्ति महानद्यः प्रध्वनन्ति यथाब्धयः ।
प्रतपन्त्युष्णरुचयः प्रस्फुरन्त्यम्बरेऽनिलाः ॥ १३ ॥
pravahanti mahānadyaḥ pradhvananti yathābdhayaḥ ,
pratapantyuṣṇarucayaḥ prasphurantyambare'nilāḥ 13
13. pravahanti mahā-nadyaḥ pradhvananti yathā abdhyayaḥ
pratapanti uṣṇa-rucayaḥ prasphuranti ambare anilāḥ
13. mahā-nadyaḥ pravahanti; yathā abdhyayaḥ pradhvananti;
uṣṇa-rucayaḥ pratapanti; anilāḥ ambare prasphuranti
13. Great rivers flow, oceans roar, hot-rayed suns shine brightly, and winds flutter in the sky.
दिवि क्रीडन्ति विबुधा भुवि क्रीडन्ति मानवाः ।
दानवा भोगिनश्चैव पातालेषु च संस्थिताः ॥ १४ ॥
divi krīḍanti vibudhā bhuvi krīḍanti mānavāḥ ,
dānavā bhoginaścaiva pātāleṣu ca saṃsthitāḥ 14
14. divi krīḍanti vibudhāḥ bhuvi krīḍanti mānavāḥ
dānavāḥ bhoginaḥ ca eva pātāleṣu ca saṃsthitāḥ
14. vibudhāḥ divi krīḍanti; mānavāḥ bhuvi krīḍanti;
ca eva dānavāḥ bhoginaḥ ca pātāleṣu saṃsthitāḥ
14. The gods play in heaven, humans play on earth; and the demons and serpents (bhoginaḥ) are situated in the lower worlds (pātāla).
कालचक्रपरिप्रोता यद्भावाः सकलर्तवः ।
यथाकालं फलापूर्णा भूषयन्त्यभितो महीम् ॥ १५ ॥
kālacakrapariprotā yadbhāvāḥ sakalartavaḥ ,
yathākālaṃ phalāpūrṇā bhūṣayantyabhito mahīm 15
15. kālacakrapariprotā yat bhāvāḥ sakalartavaḥ
yathākālam phalāpūrṇā bhūṣayanti abhitaḥ mahīm
15. sakalartavaḥ yat bhāvāḥ kālacakrapariprotā
yathākālam phalāpūrṇā abhitaḥ mahīm bhūṣayanti
15. All seasons, whose very being is threaded through the wheel of time, in due course become laden with fruits and adorn the earth all around.
प्रौढ्यं शुभाशुभाचारस्मृतयः ककुभं प्रति ।
नरकस्वर्गफलदाः सर्वत्र समुपागताः ॥ १६ ॥
prauḍhyaṃ śubhāśubhācārasmṛtayaḥ kakubhaṃ prati ,
narakasvargaphaladāḥ sarvatra samupāgatāḥ 16
16. prauḍhyam śubhāśubhācārasmṛtayaḥ kakubham
prati narakasvargaphaladāḥ sarvatra samupāgatāḥ
16. śubhāśubhācārasmṛtayaḥ narakasvargaphaladāḥ
prauḍhyam sarvatra kakubham prati samupāgatāḥ
16. Prominently, the memories of good and bad actions (karma), which grant the fruits of hell and heaven, have arrived everywhere in every direction.
भोगमोक्षफलार्थिन्यः समस्ता भूतजातयः ।
स्वमीहितं यथाकालं प्रयतन्ते यथाक्रमम् ॥ १७ ॥
bhogamokṣaphalārthinyaḥ samastā bhūtajātayaḥ ,
svamīhitaṃ yathākālaṃ prayatante yathākramam 17
17. bhogamokṣaphalārthinyaḥ samastā bhūtajātayaḥ
svam īhitam yathākālam prayatante yathākramam
17. samastā bhūtajātayaḥ bhogamokṣaphalārthinyaḥ
svam īhitam yathākālam yathākramam prayatante
17. All living beings, desiring the fruits of worldly enjoyment (bhoga) and final liberation (mokṣa), strive for their own desired aims in due time and in due order.
सप्तलोकास्तथा द्वीपाः समुद्रा गिरयस्तथा ।
अप्येष्यमाणाः कल्पान्तं स्फुरन्त्युरुतरारवम् ॥ १८ ॥
saptalokāstathā dvīpāḥ samudrā girayastathā ,
apyeṣyamāṇāḥ kalpāntaṃ sphurantyurutarāravam 18
18. saptalokāḥ tathā dvīpāḥ samudrāḥ girayaḥ tathā
api eṣyamāṇāḥ kalpāntam sphuranti urutarāravam
18. saptalokāḥ tathā dvīpāḥ samudrāḥ tathā girayaḥ
api eṣyamāṇāḥ kalpāntam urutarāravam sphuranti
18. The seven worlds, as well as the continents, the oceans, and the mountains - even those that are yet to come into being at the end of a cosmic age (kalpa) - throb with a very great roar.
क्वचिद्भासित्वमायातं क्वचित्स्थिरतरं स्थितम् ।
स्थितं सर्वत्र कुञ्जेषु तमस्तेजोलवादृतम् ॥ १९ ॥
kvacidbhāsitvamāyātaṃ kvacitsthirataraṃ sthitam ,
sthitaṃ sarvatra kuñjeṣu tamastejolavādṛtam 19
19. kvacit bhāsitvam āyātam kvacit sthirataram sthitam
sthitam sarvatra kuñjeṣu tamaḥ tejaslavādṛtam
19. tamaḥ kvacit bhāsitvam āyātam,
kvacit sthirataram sthitam,
(tat tamaḥ) sarvatra kuñjeṣu tejaslavādṛtam sthitam.
19. In some places, it (the darkness) became illuminated, while in others, it remained very stable. The darkness, present everywhere in the groves, was veiled by mere specks of light.
नभोनीलोत्पलस्यान्तर्भ्रमदभ्रमधुव्रतम् ।
प्रस्फुरत्तारकाजालकेसरापूर्णतां गतम् ॥ २० ॥
nabhonīlotpalasyāntarbhramadabhramadhuvratam ,
prasphurattārakājālakesarāpūrṇatāṃ gatam 20
20. nabho-nīlotpalasyāntarbhramadabhramadhuvratam
prasphurat-tārakā-jālakesarāpūrṇatām gatam
20. (tat tamaḥ) nabho-nīlotpalasyāntarbhramadabhramadhuvratam prasphurat-tārakā-jālakesarāpūrṇatām gatam (āsīt).
20. (The darkness) was like a wandering cloud-bee within the blue lotus of the sky, having attained the fullness of a network of shining star-filaments.
कल्पान्तघननीहारो मेरुकुञ्जेषु संस्थितः ।
शाल्मलेरमलं तूलमष्ठीलाकोटरेष्विव ॥ २१ ॥
kalpāntaghananīhāro merukuñjeṣu saṃsthitaḥ ,
śālmaleramalaṃ tūlamaṣṭhīlākoṭareṣviva 21
21. kalpānta-ghana-nīhāraḥ meru-kuñjeṣu saṃsthitaḥ
śālmaleḥ amalam tūlam aṣṭhīlā-koṭareṣu iva
21. kalpānta-ghana-nīhāraḥ (tamaḥ) meru-kuñjeṣu saṃsthitaḥ (āsīt),
śālmaleḥ amalam tūlam aṣṭhīlā-koṭareṣu iva.
21. Like the dense mist at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpānta), it (the darkness) settled in the groves of Mount Meru, resembling the pure cotton (tūla) of a silk-cotton tree (śālmalī) within its thorny hollows.
लोकालोकाद्रिरसनारणदर्णवघुंघुमा ।
तमःखण्डेन्द्रनीलाभा निजरत्नविराजिता ॥ २२ ॥
lokālokādrirasanāraṇadarṇavaghuṃghumā ,
tamaḥkhaṇḍendranīlābhā nijaratnavirājitā 22
22. lokāloka-adri-rasana-araṇad-arṇava-ghuṃghumā
tamaḥ-khaṇḍa-indranīlābhā nija-ratna-virājitā
22. (rātriḥ / sā) lokāloka-adri-rasana-araṇad-arṇava-ghuṃghumā,
tamaḥ-khaṇḍa-indranīlābhā,
nija-ratna-virājitā (āsīt).
22. (The darkness) was like the Lokāloka mountain, having the roaring murmur of the oceans as its girdle. It had the luster of a mass of sapphire (indranīla) and was adorned with its own jewels.
धानाधरसुधा भूतरवकाकलिघुंघुमा ।
संस्थिता भुवनाभोगे स्वान्तःपुर इवाङ्गना ॥ २३ ॥
dhānādharasudhā bhūtaravakākalighuṃghumā ,
saṃsthitā bhuvanābhoge svāntaḥpura ivāṅganā 23
23. dhanādhara-sudhā bhūtarava-kākali-ghuṃghumā
saṃsthitā bhuvanābhoge svāntaḥpura iva aṅganā
23. dhanādhara-sudhā bhūtarava-kākali-ghuṃghumā
bhuvanābhoge svāntaḥpura iva aṅganā saṃsthitā
23. Possessing the sweetness of nectar in its granaries and filled with the soft, indistinct humming sounds of various beings, it is situated in the vast expanse of the world, just like a woman in her private inner apartment.
गौराङ्गपङक्तिर्मध्यस्था रजनीराजिरञ्जिता ।
पद्मोत्पलस्रज इव लक्ष्यते वत्सरश्रियः ॥ २४ ॥
gaurāṅgapaṅaktirmadhyasthā rajanīrājirañjitā ,
padmotpalasraja iva lakṣyate vatsaraśriyaḥ 24
24. gaurāṅga-paṅktiḥ madhyasthā rajanī-rāji-rañjitā
padmotpala-srajaḥ iva lakṣyate vatsara-śriyaḥ
24. madhyasthā rajanī-rāji-rañjitā gaurāṅga-paṅktiḥ
vatsara-śriyaḥ padmotpala-srajaḥ iva lakṣyate
24. A central line of white forms, adorned with streaks of night, appears like garlands of lotuses and water lilies, reflecting the splendor of the year.
बहुगर्तविभागस्थभूता लोकाः पृथक्पृथक् ।
जातारुणा विलोक्यन्तेदाडिमानीवकान्तिकाः ॥ २५ ॥
bahugartavibhāgasthabhūtā lokāḥ pṛthakpṛthak ,
jātāruṇā vilokyantedāḍimānīvakāntikāḥ 25
25. bahu-garta-vibhāgastha-bhūtāḥ lokāḥ pṛthak pṛthak
jātāruṇāḥ vilokyante dāḍimāni iva kāntikāḥ
25. bahu-garta-vibhāgastha-bhūtāḥ pṛthak pṛthak
jātāruṇāḥ kāntikāḥ lokāḥ dāḍimāni iva vilokyante
25. The beings, each separately situated in many divided pits, appear reddened and beautiful, like pomegranates.
त्रिप्रवाहा त्रिपथगा कृतोर्ध्वाधोगमागमा ।
जगद्यज्ञोपवीताभा स्फुरतीन्दुकलामला ॥ २६ ॥
tripravāhā tripathagā kṛtordhvādhogamāgamā ,
jagadyajñopavītābhā sphuratīndukalāmalā 26
26. tri-pravāhā tri-pathagā kṛtordhvādho-gamāgamā
jagad-yajñopavītābhā sphurati indukalāmalā
26. tri-pravāhā tri-pathagā kṛtordhvādho-gamāgamā
jagad-yajñopavītābhā indukalāmalā sphurati
26. Having three streams and flowing in three paths, with its course characterized by upward and downward movements, it shines like the sacred thread (yajñopavīta) of the world, spotless like a digit of the moon.
इतश्चेतश्च गच्छन्ति शीर्यन्ते प्रोद्भवन्ति च ।
दिग्लतासु तडित्पुष्पा वातार्ता मेघपल्लवाः ॥ २७ ॥
itaścetaśca gacchanti śīryante prodbhavanti ca ,
diglatāsu taḍitpuṣpā vātārtā meghapallavāḥ 27
27. itaḥ ca itaḥ ca gacchanti śīryante prodbhavanti
ca diglatāsu taḍitpuṣpāḥ vātārtāḥ meghapallavāḥ
27. vātārtāḥ taḍitpuṣpāḥ meghapallavāḥ diglatāsu itaḥ
ca itaḥ ca gacchanti śīryante ca prodbhavanti
27. Clouds, like tender shoots, and lightning flashes, like flowers, troubled by the wind, move about here and there, appearing and disappearing in the creepers of the directions (sky).
गन्धर्वनगरोद्यानलतावितानमालिनी ।
समुद्रभूमिनभसां पदवी प्रविराजते ॥ २८ ॥

28. The path (or state) of the seas, lands, and skies shines forth splendidly, as if adorned with garlands of arbors of creepers from the gardens of illusory cities (gandharvanagaras).
लोकान्तरेषु सङ्घेन देवासुरनरोरगाः ।
उदुम्बरेषु मशका इव घुंघुमिताः स्थिताः ॥ २९ ॥
lokāntareṣu saṅghena devāsuranaroragāḥ ,
udumbareṣu maśakā iva ghuṃghumitāḥ sthitāḥ 29
29. lokāntareṣu saṅghena devāsuranaroragāḥ
udumbareṣu maśakāḥ iva ghuṃghumitāḥ sthitāḥ
29. devāsuranaroragāḥ saṅghena lokāntareṣu
udumbareṣu maśakāḥ iva ghuṃghumitāḥ sthitāḥ
29. In the various realms, gods, asuras, humans, and serpents are situated in groups, buzzing like mosquitoes in fig trees.
युगकल्पक्षणलवकलाकाष्ठाकलङ्कितः ।
कालो वहत्यकलितसर्वनाशप्रतीक्षकः ॥ ३० ॥
yugakalpakṣaṇalavakalākāṣṭhākalaṅkitaḥ ,
kālo vahatyakalitasarvanāśapratīkṣakaḥ 30
30. yugakalpakṣaṇalavakalākāṣṭhākalaṅkitaḥ
kālaḥ vahati akalitasarvanāśapratīkṣakaḥ
30. kālaḥ yugakalpakṣaṇalavakalākāṣṭhākalaṅkitaḥ
akalitasarvanāśapratīkṣakaḥ vahati
30. Time (kāla), marked by eras (yugas), cosmic cycles (kalpas), moments (kṣaṇas), and minute divisions (lavas, kalās, kāṣṭhās), flows on, anticipating an unperceived total annihilation.
एवमालोक्य शुद्धेन परेण स्वेन चेतसा ।
भृशं विस्मयमापन्नः किमेतत्कथमित्यलम् ॥ ३१ ॥
evamālokya śuddhena pareṇa svena cetasā ,
bhṛśaṃ vismayamāpannaḥ kimetatkathamityalam 31
31. evam ālokya śuddhena pareṇa svena cetasā bhṛśam
vismayam āpannaḥ kim etat katham iti alam
31. evam śuddhena pareṇa svena cetasā ālokya bhṛśam
vismayam āpannaḥ kim etat katham iti alam
31. Thus perceiving with a pure, supreme, and his own consciousness, he became exceedingly astonished, wondering 'What is this? How can this be?'
कथं मांसमयेनाक्ष्णा यन्न पश्यामि किंचन ।
तन्मायाजालमतुलं पश्यामि मनसाम्बरे ॥ ३२ ॥
kathaṃ māṃsamayenākṣṇā yanna paśyāmi kiṃcana ,
tanmāyājālamatulaṃ paśyāmi manasāmbare 32
32. katham māṃsamayena akṣṇā yat na paśyāmi kiṃcana
tat māyājālam atulam paśyāmi manasā ambare
32. katham māṃsamayena akṣṇā yat kiṃcana na paśyāmi
tat atulam māyājālam ambare manasā paśyāmi
32. How is it that with a fleshy eye I perceive nothing, yet with my mind, I behold that incomparable net of illusion (māyā) in the sky?
अथालोक्य चिरं कालं मनसैवाहमम्बरात् ।
अर्कं तस्माज्जगज्जालादेकमानीय पृष्टवान् ॥ ३३ ॥
athālokya ciraṃ kālaṃ manasaivāhamambarāt ,
arkaṃ tasmājjagajjālādekamānīya pṛṣṭavān 33
33. atha ālokya ciram kālam manasā eva aham ambarāt
arkam tasmāt jagajjālāt ekam ānīya pṛṣṭavān
33. atha aham ambarāt tasmāt jagajjālāt ekam arkam
ciram kālam manasā eva ālokya ānīya pṛṣṭavān
33. Then, having pondered for a long time with my mind alone, I brought one sun (arka) from that cosmic web (jagajjāla) in the sky and questioned it.
आगच्छ देवदेवेश भो भास्कर महाद्युते ।
स्वागतं तेऽस्त्विति प्रोक्तो मयासौ कथितोप्यथ ॥ ३४ ॥
āgaccha devadeveśa bho bhāskara mahādyute ,
svāgataṃ te'stviti prokto mayāsau kathitopyatha 34
34. āgaccha devadeveśa bho bhāskara mahādyute svāgatam
te astu iti proktaḥ mayā asau kathitaḥ api atha
34. devadeveśa bho bhāskara mahādyute āgaccha te svāgatam
astu iti mayā asau proktaḥ atha api kathitaḥ
34. I addressed him thus: 'Come, O Lord of lords, O Sun (Bhāskara), O greatly resplendent one! Welcome to you!' Then he, in turn, spoke.
कस्त्वं कथमिदं जातं जगदेव जगन्ति च ।
यदि जानासि भगवंस्तदेतत्कथयानघ ॥ ३५ ॥
kastvaṃ kathamidaṃ jātaṃ jagadeva jaganti ca ,
yadi jānāsi bhagavaṃstadetatkathayānagha 35
35. kaḥ tvam katham idam jātam jagat eva jaganti ca
yadi jānāsi bhagavan tat etat kathaya anagha
35. bhagavan anagha tvam kaḥ idam jagat jaganti
ca katham jātam yadi jānāsi tat etat kathaya
35. Who are you? How did this world, and all other worlds, come into being? If you know this, O venerable one, O sinless one, please tell me.
इत्युक्तो मां समालोक्य संपरिज्ञातवानथ ।
नमस्कृत्वाभ्युवाचेदमनिन्द्यपदया गिरा ॥ ३६ ॥
ityukto māṃ samālokya saṃparijñātavānatha ,
namaskṛtvābhyuvācedamanindyapadayā girā 36
36. iti uktaḥ mām samālokya samparijñātavān atha
namaskṛtvā abhyuvāca idam anindyapadayā girā
36. atha iti uktaḥ mām samālokya samparijñātavān
namaskṛtvā anindyapadayā girā idam abhyuvāca
36. Thus addressed, he then, after seeing me thoroughly and fully recognizing me, bowed and spoke these words to me with faultless speech.
श्रीभानुरुवाच ।
अस्य दृश्यप्रपञ्चस्य नित्यं कारणतामसि ।
गतः कस्मान्न जानीषे किं मामीश्वर पृच्छसि ॥ ३७ ॥
śrībhānuruvāca ,
asya dṛśyaprapañcasya nityaṃ kāraṇatāmasi ,
gataḥ kasmānna jānīṣe kiṃ māmīśvara pṛcchasi 37
37. śrībhānuḥ uvāca asya dṛśyaprapañcasya nityam kāraṇatām
asi gataḥ kasmāt na jānīṣe kim mām īśvara pṛcchasi
37. śrībhānuḥ uvāca he īśvara,
asya dṛśyaprapañcasya nityam kāraṇatām gataḥ asi kasmāt na jānīṣe? kim mām pṛcchasi?
37. Śrī Bhānu said: 'You are eternally the cause of this visible manifestation of the universe; why then do you not know this? Why do you ask me, O Lord (īśvara)?'
अथ मद्वाक्यसंदर्भे लीला चेत्तव सर्वग ।
अचिन्तितां मदुत्पत्तिं तच्छृणुष्व वदाम्यहम् ॥ ३८ ॥
atha madvākyasaṃdarbhe līlā cettava sarvaga ,
acintitāṃ madutpattiṃ tacchṛṇuṣva vadāmyaham 38
38. atha mat vākyasandarbhe līlā cet tava sarvaga
acintitām mat utpattim tat śṛṇuṣva vadāmi aham
38. atha he sarvaga,
mat vākyasandarbhe tava līlā cet,
tat acintitām mat utpattim śṛṇuṣva; aham vadāmi
38. Now, O all-pervading one, if this exchange concerning my words is your divine play (līlā), then listen: I will tell you about my inconceivable (acintita) origin.
सदसदिति कलाभिराततं यत् सदसदबोधविमोहदायिनीभिः ।
अविरतरचनाभिरीश्वरात्मन् प्रविलसतीह मनो महन्महात्मन् ॥ ३९ ॥
sadasaditi kalābhirātataṃ yat sadasadabodhavimohadāyinībhiḥ ,
avirataracanābhirīśvarātman pravilasatīha mano mahanmahātman 39
39. sadasat iti kalābhiḥ ātatam yat
sadasadabodha-vimohadāyinībhiḥ
avirataracanābhiḥ īśvarātman
pravilasati iha manaḥ mahat mahātman
39. īśvarātman mahātman iha mahat
manaḥ yat sadasat iti kalābhiḥ ātatam
sadasadabodha-vimohadāyinībhiḥ
avirataracanābhiḥ pravilasati
39. O Self of the Lord (īśvarātman), O Great Soul (mahātman), the great mind (manas) shines forth here, pervaded by both existence and non-existence. It does so through the continuous creations of powers (kalās) that induce delusion regarding the knowledge of what is real and what is unreal.
