ततः कतिपयेष्वेव दिवसेषु गतेषु सा ।
इदं प्रोवाच भर्तारं कुम्भरूपधरा सती ॥ १ ॥

tataḥ katipayeṣveva divaseṣu gateṣu sā ,
idaṃ provāca bhartāraṃ kumbharūpadharā satī 1

1. śrī-vasiṣṭha uvāca tataḥ katipayeṣu divaseṣu eva gateṣu satī sā kumbharūpadharā bhartāram idam provāca.
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, when only a few days had passed, that chaste woman, while in the form of a pot, spoke this to her husband.
राजन्राजीवपत्राक्ष ममेदं वचनं श्रृणु ।
निशायां प्रत्यहं तावत्स्थित एवाहमङ्गना ॥ २ ॥
rājanrājīvapatrākṣa mamedaṃ vacanaṃ śrṛṇu ,
niśāyāṃ pratyahaṃ tāvatsthita evāhamaṅganā 2
2. rājan rājīvapatrākṣa mama idam vacanam śṛṇu |
niśāyām pratyaham tāvat sthitaḥ eva aham aṅganā ||
2. rājan rājīvapatrākṣa! mama idam vacanam śṛṇu.
niśāyām pratyaham tāvat aham aṅganā eva sthitaḥ.
2. O King, O lotus-petal-eyed one, listen to this statement of mine: I indeed remain a woman every night.
तदिच्छाम्यङ्गनाधर्मं निपुणीकर्तुमीदृशम् ।
भर्त्रे कस्मैचिदात्मानं विवाहेन ददाम्यहम् ॥ ३ ॥
tadicchāmyaṅganādharmaṃ nipuṇīkartumīdṛśam ,
bhartre kasmaicidātmānaṃ vivāhena dadāmyaham 3
3. tat icchāmi aṅganādharmaṃ nipuṇīkartum īdṛśam
bhartre kasmaicit ātmānaṃ vivāhena dadāmi aham
3. aham tat īdṛśam aṅganādharmaṃ nipuṇīkartum
icchāmi kasmaicit bhartre vivāhena ātmānaṃ dadāmi
3. Therefore, I wish to perfectly fulfill this natural duty (dharma) of a woman. I will give myself (ātman) in marriage to some husband.
तद्भवानेव मे भर्ता रोचते भुवनत्रये ।
गृहाण मां विवाहेन भार्यात्वे निशि सर्वदा ॥ ४ ॥
tadbhavāneva me bhartā rocate bhuvanatraye ,
gṛhāṇa māṃ vivāhena bhāryātve niśi sarvadā 4
4. tat bhavān eva me bhartā rocate bhuvanatraye
gṛhāṇa mām vivāhena bhāryātve niśi sarvadā
4. tat bhuvanatraye me bhavān eva bhartā rocate
mām vivāhena bhāryātve niśi sarvadā gṛhāṇa
4. Therefore, you alone are pleasing to me as a husband among the three worlds. Accept me always into wifehood through marriage, at all times.
अयत्नोपनतं साधो प्रियेण सुहृदा सह ।
स्त्रीसुखं भोक्तुमिच्छामि मा मे विघ्नकरो भव ॥ ५ ॥
ayatnopanataṃ sādho priyeṇa suhṛdā saha ,
strīsukhaṃ bhoktumicchāmi mā me vighnakaro bhava 5
5. ayatnopanatam sādho priyeṇa suhṛdā saha strīsukham
bhoktum icchāmi mā me vighnakaraḥ bhava
5. sādho,
aham ayatnopanatam strīsukham priyeṇa suhṛdā saha bhoktum icchāmi.
mā me vighnakaraḥ bhava
5. O virtuous one, I wish to enjoy the pleasure of a woman, which has come to me effortlessly, together with a beloved friend. Do not be a hindrance to me.
क्रमप्रवृत्तमासृष्टेः सुखं साध्यं मनोरमम् ।
प्रकृतं कुर्वतः कार्यं दोषः क इव जायते ॥ ६ ॥
kramapravṛttamāsṛṣṭeḥ sukhaṃ sādhyaṃ manoramam ,
prakṛtaṃ kurvataḥ kāryaṃ doṣaḥ ka iva jāyate 6
6. kramapravṛttam āsṛṣṭeḥ sukham sādhyam manoramam
prakṛtam kurvataḥ kāryam doṣaḥ kaḥ iva jāyate
6. āsṛṣṭeḥ kramapravṛttam sukham sādhyam manoramam
prakṛtam kāryam kurvataḥ doṣaḥ kaḥ iva jāyate
6. What fault, indeed, arises for one who performs a proper action (karma), which is delightful, attainable, and has been traditionally observed since the beginning of creation?
इच्छानिच्छे फले त्यक्त्वा समन्तात्सर्ववस्तुषु ।
वयं न सेच्छा नानिच्छाः कुर्मस्तेनेदमीप्सितम् ॥ ७ ॥
icchānicche phale tyaktvā samantātsarvavastuṣu ,
vayaṃ na secchā nānicchāḥ kurmastenedamīpsitam 7
7. icchānicche phale tyaktvā samantāt sarvavastuṣu vayam
na sa-icchāḥ na anicchāḥ kurmaḥ tena idam īpsitam
7. vayam samantāt sarvavastuṣu icchānicche phale tyaktvā
na sa-icchāḥ na anicchāḥ kurmaḥ tena idam īpsitam
7. Having completely abandoned both attraction and repulsion towards the results in all matters, we act neither with specific desire nor with aversion. Thus, this is our desired mode of action (karma).
शिखिध्वज उवाच ।
कृतेनानेन कार्येण न शुभं नाशुभं सखे ।
पश्यामि तन्महाबुद्धे यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥ ८ ॥
śikhidhvaja uvāca ,
kṛtenānena kāryeṇa na śubhaṃ nāśubhaṃ sakhe ,
paśyāmi tanmahābuddhe yathecchasi tathā kuru 8
8. śikhidhvaja uvāca kṛtena anena kāryeṇa na śubhaṃ na aśubhaṃ
sakhe paśyāmi tat mahābudhe yathā icchasi tathā kuru
8. śikhidhvaja uvāca sakhe anena kṛtena kāryeṇa tat na śubhaṃ
na aśubhaṃ paśyāmi mahābudhe yathā icchasi tathā kuru
8. Śikhidhvaja said: "Friend, regarding this performed action (karma), I see neither good nor bad. Therefore, O highly intelligent one, do as you wish."
समतां संप्रयातेन चेतसेदं जगत्त्रयम् ।
स्वरूपमेव पश्यामि यथेच्छसि तदाचर ॥ ९ ॥
samatāṃ saṃprayātena cetasedaṃ jagattrayam ,
svarūpameva paśyāmi yathecchasi tadācara 9
9. samatām saṃprayātena cetasā idam jagattrayam
svarūpam eva paśyāmi yathā icchasi tat ācara
9. samatām saṃprayātena cetasā idam jagattrayam
svarūpam eva paśyāmi yathā icchasi tat ācara
9. With a mind that has attained equanimity, I perceive these three worlds as nothing but my own true nature (ātman). Therefore, act as you wish.
कुम्भ उवाच ।
यद्येवं तन्महीपाल लग्नमद्यैव शोभनम् ।
राकेयं श्रावणस्यास्य ह्यः सर्वं गणितं मया ॥ १० ॥
kumbha uvāca ,
yadyevaṃ tanmahīpāla lagnamadyaiva śobhanam ,
rākeyaṃ śrāvaṇasyāsya hyaḥ sarvaṃ gaṇitaṃ mayā 10
10. kumbha uvāca yadi evaṃ tat mahīpāla lagnam adya eva
śobhanam rākā iyam śrāvaṇasya asya hyaḥ sarvaṃ gaṇitam mayā
10. kumbha uvāca mahīpāla yadi evaṃ tat adya eva śobhanam
lagnam asya śrāvaṇasya iyaṃ rākā sarvaṃ mayā hyaḥ gaṇitam
10. Kumbha said: "If this is the case, O king, then an excellent auspicious moment (lagna) is precisely today – this full moon of the Śrāvaṇa month. I calculated everything yesterday."
रात्रावद्योदिते चन्द्रे परिपूर्णकलामले ।
जन्यत्रो नौ महाबाहो द्वयोरेव भविष्यति ॥ ११ ॥
rātrāvadyodite candre paripūrṇakalāmale ,
janyatro nau mahābāho dvayoreva bhaviṣyati 11
11. rātrau adya udite candre paripūrṇakalāmale
janmāstrau nau mahābāho dvayoḥ eva bhaviṣyati
11. mahābāho adya rātrau udite paripūrṇakalāmale
candre nau dvayoḥ eva janmāstrau bhaviṣyati
11. O mighty-armed one, tonight, with the moon having risen, full-orbed and spotless, a duel will indeed take place between the two of us.
महेन्द्राद्रिशिरःश्रृङ्गसानावद्य मनोरमे ।
रत्नदीपप्रकाशाढ्ये मणिकन्दरमन्दिरे ॥ १२ ॥

ratnadīpaprakāśāḍhye maṇikandaramandire 12

12. Today, on the delightful plateau-summit of the peak of Mount Mahendra, which is rich with the radiance of jewel-lamps, and which is a temple within a jewel-cave.
पुष्पभारानतोत्तुङ्गवृक्षराजिविराजिते ।
वनपुष्पलतालास्यनारीनृत्यमनोहरे ॥ १३ ॥
puṣpabhārānatottuṅgavṛkṣarājivirājite ,
vanapuṣpalatālāsyanārīnṛtyamanohare 13
13. puṣpabhārānatottuṅgavṛkṣarājivirājite

13. Adorned with rows of very tall trees, bent low by the weight of their blossoms, and enchanting with the dance-like swaying of forest creepers adorned with flowers, resembling dancing women.
निशि व्योमगतास्तारा भर्त्रा पूर्णेन्दुना सह ।
आवयोः परिपश्यन्तु कर्णान्तायतलोचन ॥ १४ ॥
niśi vyomagatāstārā bhartrā pūrṇendunā saha ,
āvayoḥ paripaśyantu karṇāntāyatalocana 14
14. niśi vyomagatāḥ tārāḥ bhartrā pūrṇendunā
saha āvayoḥ paripaśyantu karṇāntāyatadocana
14. karṇāntāyatadocana niśi vyomagatāḥ tārāḥ
bhartrā pūrṇendunā saha āvayoḥ paripaśyantu
14. O you whose eyes are long and reach to the ears, let the stars moving in the sky, together with their lord, the full moon, watch the two of us tonight.
उत्तिष्ठात्मविवाहार्थं कुर्वः काननकोटरात् ।
राजेश्चन्दनपुष्पादिसंभारं रत्नसंयुतम् ॥ १५ ॥
uttiṣṭhātmavivāhārthaṃ kurvaḥ kānanakoṭarāt ,
rājeścandanapuṣpādisaṃbhāraṃ ratnasaṃyutam 15
15. Rise, O prince, for your marriage;and let us both hie to cull the forest flowers, and prepare the sandal paste and collect the scattered gems, in order to deck our nuptial seats therewith.
इत्युक्त्वा कुम्भ उत्थाय सह तेन महीभृता ।
कुसुमावचयं चक्रे तथा रत्नादिसंचयम् ॥ १६ ॥
ityuktvā kumbha utthāya saha tena mahībhṛtā ,
kusumāvacayaṃ cakre tathā ratnādisaṃcayam 16
16. Saying so, they both rose together, and culled the flowers and collected the gems.
ततो मुहूर्तमात्रेण रत्नसानौ समे शुभे ।
समालम्भनपुष्पाणां ताभ्यां वै राशयः कृताः ॥ १७ ॥
tato muhūrtamātreṇa ratnasānau same śubhe ,
samālambhanapuṣpāṇāṃ tābhyāṃ vai rāśayaḥ kṛtāḥ 17
17. Then in a short time, they repaired to the gemming steppe, and heaped it with flowers of various kinds.
हाराम्बरमणीन्द्रादिराशयस्त्वपरेऽजिरे ।
सौभाग्यस्येव कामेन कोशाः कालेन संभृताः ॥ १८ ॥
hārāmbaramaṇīndrādirāśayastvapare'jire ,
saubhāgyasyeva kāmena kośāḥ kālena saṃbhṛtāḥ 18
18. They had their marriage vests and necklaces ready on the spot, and the God of love helped with the supply of every thing required on the occasion.
तथा जन्यत्रसंभारं कृत्वा काञ्चनकन्दरे ।
ययतुस्तौ महामित्रे स्नातुं मन्दाकिनीं नदीम् ॥ १९ ॥
tathā janyatrasaṃbhāraṃ kṛtvā kāñcanakandare ,
yayatustau mahāmitre snātuṃ mandākinīṃ nadīm 19
19. tathā janyatrasasaṃbhāram kṛtvā kāñcanakandare
yayatuḥ tau mahāmitre snātum mandākinīm nadīm
19. tau mahāmitre tathā kāñcanakandare janyatrasasaṃbhāram
kṛtvā mandākinīm nadīm snātum yayatuḥ
19. Then, having created a collection of things that inspire fear in the golden cave, those two great friends went to bathe in the Mandakini river.
तत्रैनं स्नापयामास महाराजं महादरात् ।
गजकुम्भोपमस्कन्धं कुम्भो मङ्गलपूर्वकम् ॥ २० ॥
tatrainaṃ snāpayāmāsa mahārājaṃ mahādarāt ,
gajakumbhopamaskandhaṃ kumbho maṅgalapūrvakam 20
20. tatra enam snāpayām āsa mahārājam mahādarāt
gajakumbhopamaskandham kumbhaḥ maṅgalapūrvakam
20. tatra kumbhaḥ mahādarāt maṅgalapūrvakam enam
mahārājam gajakumbhopamaskandham snāpayām āsa
20. There, Kumbha, with great reverence and auspiciously, bathed him, the great king, whose shoulders resembled the frontal protuberances of an elephant.
भविष्यद्दयितारूपां भविष्यद्दयितोऽङ्गनाम् ।
चूडालां स्नापयामास कुम्भरूपधरां प्रियाम् ॥ २१ ॥
bhaviṣyaddayitārūpāṃ bhaviṣyaddayito'ṅganām ,
cūḍālāṃ snāpayāmāsa kumbharūpadharāṃ priyām 21
21. bhaviṣyaddayitārūpām bhaviṣyaddayitaḥ aṅganām
cūḍālām snāpayām āsa kumbharūpadharām priyām
21. bhaviṣyaddayitaḥ (Kumbha) bhaviṣyaddayitārūpām
kumbharūpadharām priyām aṅganām cūḍālām snāpayām āsa
21. The one who would be his beloved (Kumbha) bathed his dear Lady Cūḍālā, who possessed the form of his future beloved and who also embodied the form of Kumbha.
पूजयामासतुः स्नातौ तत्र देवपितृन्मुनीन् ।
यथा क्रियाफलेऽनिच्छौ क्रियात्यागे तथैव तौ ॥ २२ ॥
pūjayāmāsatuḥ snātau tatra devapitṛnmunīn ,
yathā kriyāphale'nicchau kriyātyāge tathaiva tau 22
22. pūjayām āsatuh snātau tatra devapitṛmunīn yathā
kriyāphale anicchau kriyātyāge tathā eva tau
22. snātau tau tatra devapitṛmunīn pūjayām āsatuh yathā kriyāphale anicchau,
tathā eva kriyātyāge (anicchau)
22. Having bathed there, those two worshipped the gods, ancestors (pitṛ), and sages (muni). Just as they were without desire for the fruit of action (karma), so too were they without desire for the abandonment of action.
नित्यज्ञानरसातृप्तौ व्यवस्थायां जगत्स्थितेः ।
चक्राते भोजनं भव्यं तावन्योन्यसमीहितम् ॥ २३ ॥
nityajñānarasātṛptau vyavasthāyāṃ jagatsthiteḥ ,
cakrāte bhojanaṃ bhavyaṃ tāvanyonyasamīhitam 23
23. nityajñānarasātṛptau vyavasthāyāṃ jagatsthiteḥ
cakrāte bhojanaṃ bhavyaṃ tau anyonyasamīhitam
23. tau nityajñānarasātṛptau jagatsthiteḥ vyavasthāyām
anyonyasamīhitam bhavyaṃ bhojanaṃ cakrāte
23. Though these two were not fully satisfied by the essence of eternal knowledge, they partook in a splendid, mutually desired meal, in accordance with the established order of the world's existence.
कल्पवृक्षदुकूलानि परिधाय सितानि तौ ।
फलानि भुक्त्वा जन्यत्रस्थानमाययतुः क्रमात् ॥ २४ ॥
kalpavṛkṣadukūlāni paridhāya sitāni tau ,
phalāni bhuktvā janyatrasthānamāyayatuḥ kramāt 24
24. kalpavṛkṣadukūlāni paridhāya sitāni tau
phalāni bhuktvā janyatrasthānam āyayatuḥ kramāt
24. tau kalpavṛkṣadukūlāni sitāni paridhāya
phalāni bhuktvā kramāt janyatrasthānam āyayatuḥ
24. Having adorned themselves with white silk garments from the wish-fulfilling tree, and having eaten fruits, the two then proceeded, in due course, to the abode of humans.
एतावताथ कालेन तयोर्जन्यत्रसोत्कयोः ।
प्रियं कर्तुमिवास्ताद्रिं द्रागित्येवाविशद्रविः ॥ २५ ॥
etāvatātha kālena tayorjanyatrasotkayoḥ ,
priyaṃ kartumivāstādriṃ drāgityevāviśadraviḥ 25
25. etāvatā atha kālena tayoḥ janyatrasotkayoḥ priyaṃ
kartum iva astādriṃ drāk iti eva āviśat raviḥ
25. atha etāvatā kālena janyatrasotkayoḥ tayoḥ priyaṃ
kartum iva raviḥ drāk iti eva astādriṃ āviśat
25. By this time, as if to please those two who were eager for the abode of mortals, the sun instantly entered the western mountain.
अथ संध्याक्रमे वृत्ते कृते जप्याघमर्षणे ।
विवाहदर्शनायैव ताराजाले खमागते ॥ २६ ॥
atha saṃdhyākrame vṛtte kṛte japyāghamarṣaṇe ,
vivāhadarśanāyaiva tārājāle khamāgate 26
26. atha sandhyākrame vṛtte kṛte japyāghamārṣaṇe
vivāhadarśanāya eva tārājāle kham āgate
26. atha sandhyākrame vṛtte japyāghamārṣaṇe kṛte
kham tārājāle āgate eva vivāhadarśanāya
26. Then, after the evening twilight rites had been performed, and the expiatory chanting completed, when the multitude of stars had appeared in the sky, it was solely for the purpose of witnessing the marriage.
मिथुनैकसखीयामा कुमुदोत्करहासिनी ।
प्रालेयजालप्रकरं विकिरन्ती समाययौ ॥ २७ ॥
mithunaikasakhīyāmā kumudotkarahāsinī ,
prāleyajālaprakaraṃ vikirantī samāyayau 27
27. mithunaika-sakhī-yāmā kumudotkara-hāsinī
prāleya-jāla-prakaraṃ vikirantī samāyayau
27. mithunaika-sakhī-yāmā kumudotkara-hāsinī
vikirantī prāleya-jāla-prakaraṃ samāyayau
27. The watch of night, a unique companion for couples, which smiled with a multitude of white water lilies, arrived, scattering a mass of frost.
रत्नदीपान्बहून्सानौ कुम्भः सम्यगयोजयत् ।
ज्योतींषीन्द्वर्कयुक्तानि पद्मोद्भव इवाम्बरे ॥ २८ ॥
ratnadīpānbahūnsānau kumbhaḥ samyagayojayat ,
jyotīṃṣīndvarkayuktāni padmodbhava ivāmbare 28
28. ratna-dīpān bahūn sānau kumbhaḥ samyak ayojayat
jyotīṃṣi indu-arka-yuktāni padmodbhavaḥ iva ambare
28. padmodbhavaḥ iva ambare indu-arka-yuktāni jyotīṃṣi ayojayat,
kumbhaḥ sānau bahūn ratna-dīpān samyak ayojayat
28. Just as Padmodbhava [Brahma] arranged the luminaries, including the moon and sun, in the sky, so did Kumbha properly set up many jewel-lamps on the peak.
भूषयामास राजानं स्त्रीत्वं गच्छन्निशागमे ।
चन्दनागुरुकर्पूरपूरैर्मृगजकुङ्कुमैः ॥ २९ ॥
bhūṣayāmāsa rājānaṃ strītvaṃ gacchanniśāgame ,
candanāgurukarpūrapūrairmṛgajakuṅkumaiḥ 29
29. bhūṣayāmāsa rājānaṃ strītvaṃ gacchan niśā-game
candana-aguru-karpūra-pūraiḥ mṛgaja-kuṅkumaiḥ
29. niśā-game strītvaṃ gacchan rājānaṃ
candana-aguru-karpūra-pūraiḥ mṛgaja-kuṅkumaiḥ bhūṣayāmāsa
29. At nightfall, (he), assuming a feminine aspect, adorned the king with copious amounts of sandalwood, agallochum, and camphor, along with musk and saffron.
हारकेयूरकटकैस्तथा कल्पलतांशुकैः ।
स्रगुद्दामावतंसैश्च माल्यैश्च विविधोचितैः ॥ ३० ॥
hārakeyūrakaṭakaistathā kalpalatāṃśukaiḥ ,
sraguddāmāvataṃsaiśca mālyaiśca vividhocitaiḥ 30
30. hāra-keyūra-kaṭakaiḥ tathā kalpa-latā-aṃśukaiḥ
srak-uddāma-avataṃsaiḥ ca mālyaiḥ ca vividha-ucitaiḥ
30. tathā hāra-keyūra-kaṭakaiḥ ca kalpa-latā-aṃśukaiḥ ca
srak-uddāma-avataṃsaiḥ ca vividha-ucitaiḥ mālyaiḥ
30. And also with necklaces, armlets, and bracelets; with garments like wish-granting creepers; and with wreaths and expansive ear ornaments; and with various appropriate flower garlands.
तथा कल्पलतागुच्छैर्मन्दारैः पारिजातकैः ।
संतानैर्बहुरत्नैश्च मौलिना चेन्दुरूपिणा ॥ ३१ ॥
tathā kalpalatāgucchairmandāraiḥ pārijātakaiḥ ,
saṃtānairbahuratnaiśca maulinā cendurūpiṇā 31
31. tathā kalpalatāgucchaiḥ mandāraiḥ pārijātakaiḥ
saṃtānaiḥ bahuratnaiḥ ca maulinā ca indurūpiṇā
31. tathā kalpalatāgucchaiḥ mandāraiḥ pārijātakaiḥ
saṃtānaiḥ bahuratnaiḥ ca indurūpiṇā maulinā ca
31. And similarly, (adorned) with bunches of wish-fulfilling creepers, Mandara flowers, Parijata flowers, Santana flowers, and many jewels, as well as with a moon-like crown.
एतावताथ कालेन वधूत्वं कुम्भ आययौ ।
घनस्तनभराक्रान्तो बभूवाशु विलासवान् ॥ ३२ ॥
etāvatātha kālena vadhūtvaṃ kumbha āyayau ,
ghanastanabharākrānto babhūvāśu vilāsavān 32
32. etāvatā atha kālena vadhūtvam kumbhaḥ āyayau
ghanastanabharākrāntaḥ babhūva āśu vilāsavān
32. atha etāvatā kālena kumbhaḥ vadhūtvam āyayau
āśu ghanastanabharākrāntaḥ vilāsavān babhūva
32. Then, after so much time, Kumbha attained the state of a bride. Quickly, he became charming, weighed down by the burden of full breasts.
इदं संचिन्तयामास संपन्नोऽयमहं वधूः ।
कामायात्मा मया देयः कार्यं कालोचितं किल ॥ ३३ ॥
idaṃ saṃcintayāmāsa saṃpanno'yamahaṃ vadhūḥ ,
kāmāyātmā mayā deyaḥ kāryaṃ kālocitaṃ kila 33
33. idam saṃcintayāmāsa saṃpannaḥ ayam aham vadhūḥ
kāmāya ātmā mayā deyaḥ kāryam kālocitam kila
33. saṃcintayāmāsa idam aham ayam vadhūḥ saṃpannaḥ

33. Kumbha reflected thus: 'I, having become a bride, must offer my self (ātman) for love (kāma). Indeed, the action appropriate for this time must be performed.'
इयमस्मि वधूः कान्ता भर्ता त्वं मे पुरःस्थितः ।
गृहाण काम मामेहि कालोऽयं तव हृच्छयः ॥ ३४ ॥
iyamasmi vadhūḥ kāntā bhartā tvaṃ me puraḥsthitaḥ ,
gṛhāṇa kāma māmehi kālo'yaṃ tava hṛcchayaḥ 34
34. iyam asmi vadhūḥ kāntā bhartā tvam me puraḥsthitaḥ

34. I am this beloved bride, and you, my husband, stand before me. O love (kāma), accept me! Come to me! This is the time for your heart-born love (hṛcchaya).
इति संचिन्त्य भर्तारमग्रस्थगहनस्थितम् ।
उदयन्तमिवादित्यं रतिः काममिवाभ्यगात् ॥ ३५ ॥
iti saṃcintya bhartāramagrasthagahanasthitam ,
udayantamivādityaṃ ratiḥ kāmamivābhyagāt 35
35. So saying, she approached her husband sitting apart from her in the wood; and appeared as Rati—the goddess of love, was advancing towards her loving Kama.
अहं मदनिका नाम भार्यास्मि तव मानद ।
पादयोस्ते प्रणामोऽयं सस्नेहं क्रियते मया ॥ ३६ ॥
ahaṃ madanikā nāma bhāryāsmi tava mānada ,
pādayoste praṇāmo'yaṃ sasnehaṃ kriyate mayā 36
36. She went to him and said:—"I am Madanika by name and thy loving wife I therefore bow down at your feet, with the regard due to a husband.
इत्युक्त्वा सानवद्याङ्गी लज्जावनमितानना ।
लोलालकेन शिरसा प्रणनाम लसत्पतिम् ॥ ३७ ॥
ityuktvā sānavadyāṅgī lajjāvanamitānanā ,
lolālakena śirasā praṇanāma lasatpatim 37
37. So saying, the beauteous lady, bent down her head with female bashfulness; and made her obeisance to her lord, with the pendant locks on her head.
उवाचेदं च हे नाथ त्वं मां भूषय भूषणैः ।
क्रमेणाग्निं च संज्वाल्य मत्पाणिग्रहणं कुरु ॥ ३८ ॥
uvācedaṃ ca he nātha tvaṃ māṃ bhūṣaya bhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
krameṇāgniṃ ca saṃjvālya matpāṇigrahaṇaṃ kuru 38
38. And then she said to him said:—“O thou my lord! do thou adorn me with ornaments also, and then light the nuptial fire, to attest thy acceptance of my hand.”
राजसेऽतितरां राजन्मां करोषि स्मरातुराम् ।
रतेर्विवाहे मदनमभिभूयाधितिष्ठसि ॥ ३९ ॥
rājase'titarāṃ rājanmāṃ karoṣi smarāturām ,
ratervivāhe madanamabhibhūyādhitiṣṭhasi 39
39. rājase atitarām rājan mām karoṣi smarāturām
rateḥ vivāhe madanam abhibhūya adhitiṣṭhasi

39. O King, you shine so exceedingly that you make me agitated with love. You surpass Madana (the god of love), presiding even over Rati's marriage.
इन्दोरिवांशुजालानि राजन्माल्यानि तानि ते ।
मेरुगङ्गाप्रवाहाभां धत्ते हारस्तवोरसि ॥ ४० ॥
indorivāṃśujālāni rājanmālyāni tāni te ,
merugaṅgāpravāhābhāṃ dhatte hārastavorasi 40
40. indoḥ iva aṃśujālāni rājan mālyāni tāni te

40. O King, those garlands of yours are like the moon's rays. Your necklace on your chest possesses the splendor of the flow of the Gaṅgā on Mount Meru.
मन्दारकुसुमप्रोतैः कुन्तलैर्नृप राजसे ।
कनकाब्जमिवोल्लोलैर्भृङ्गैः खचितकेसरैः ॥ ४१ ॥
mandārakusumaprotaiḥ kuntalairnṛpa rājase ,
kanakābjamivollolairbhṛṅgaiḥ khacitakesaraiḥ 41

41. O King, you shine with your locks of hair threaded with Mandāra flowers, just like a golden lotus whose filaments are studded by buzzing bees.
रत्नांशुजालैः कुसुमैः श्रिया स्थैर्येण तेजसा ।
रत्नस्थानं विभो मेरुमभिभूयावतिष्ठसे ॥ ४२ ॥
ratnāṃśujālaiḥ kusumaiḥ śriyā sthairyeṇa tejasā ,
ratnasthānaṃ vibho merumabhibhūyāvatiṣṭhase 42
42. ratnāṃśujālaiḥ kusumaiḥ śriyā sthairyeṇa tejasā

42. O mighty one, you surpass Mount Meru, the abode of jewels, by your networks of jewel-rays, by your flowers, by your splendor, by your stability, and by your radiance.
एवमादि वदन्तौ तौ भविष्यन्नवदम्पती ।
प्रच्छन्नपूर्वदाम्पत्यौ मिथस्तुष्टौ बभूवतुः ॥ ४३ ॥
evamādi vadantau tau bhaviṣyannavadampatī ,
pracchannapūrvadāmpatyau mithastuṣṭau babhūvatuḥ 43
43. evamādi vadantau tau bhaviṣyat nava-dampatī

43. Speaking such words, those two, who were to be a new couple in the future but were secretly an old couple from the past, became mutually content.
महाराज्ञीं मदनिकां महाराजः शिखिध्वजः ।
काञ्चनोपलपर्यङ्के निविष्टो भूषयत्स्वयम् ॥ ४४ ॥
mahārājñīṃ madanikāṃ mahārājaḥ śikhidhvajaḥ ,
kāñcanopalaparyaṅke niviṣṭo bhūṣayatsvayam 44

44. King Śikhidhvaja, himself, while seated on a couch made of golden stones, adorned Queen Madanikā.
अवतंसैस्तथा माल्यैर्मणिरत्नविभूषणैः ।
वस्त्रैर्विलेपनैः पुष्पै रुचिरस्थानकार्पितैः ॥ ४५ ॥
avataṃsaistathā mālyairmaṇiratnavibhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
vastrairvilepanaiḥ puṣpai rucirasthānakārpitaiḥ 45
45. avataṃsaiḥ tathā mālyaiḥ maṇi-ratna-vibhūṣaṇaiḥ
vastraiḥ vilepanaiḥ puṣpaiḥ rucira-sthānaka-arpitaiḥ
45. tathā avataṃsaiḥ mālyaiḥ maṇi-ratna-vibhūṣaṇaiḥ
vastraiḥ vilepanaiḥ puṣpaiḥ rucira-sthānaka-arpitaiḥ
45. He adorned her with ear-ornaments, and with garlands, with ornaments of jewels and gems, with garments, with anointments, and with flowers, all beautifully arranged.
सा बभौ भूषिता तन्वी मदनी मददायिनी ।
गिरिजेव विवाहोत्का कामकान्तेव कामिनी ॥ ४६ ॥
sā babhau bhūṣitā tanvī madanī madadāyinī ,
girijeva vivāhotkā kāmakānteva kāminī 46
46. sā babhau bhūṣitā tanvī madanī mada-dāyinī
girijā iva vivāha-utkā kāma-kāntā iva kāminī
46. sā tanvī bhūṣitā madanī mada-dāyinī vivāha-utkā
girijā iva kāminī kāma-kāntā iva babhau
46. That slender, adorned, and captivating Madanī shone like Girijā (Pārvatī) longing for marriage, or like Kāma's beloved (Rati), a passionate woman.
महाराजो महाराज्ञीं भूषयित्वेदमाह ताम् ।
राजसे मृगशावाक्षि लक्ष्मीरिव नवोदिता ॥ ४७ ॥
mahārājo mahārājñīṃ bhūṣayitvedamāha tām ,
rājase mṛgaśāvākṣi lakṣmīriva navoditā 47
47. mahārājaḥ mahārājñīm bhūṣayitvā idam āha
tām rājase mṛgaśāvākṣi lakṣmīḥ iva navoditā
47. mahārājaḥ mahārājñīm bhūṣayitvā tām idam āha.
mṛgaśāvākṣi! navoditā lakṣmīḥ iva rājase.
47. The great king, having adorned the great queen, said this to her: "O deer-eyed one, you shine like the newly risen goddess Lakṣmī."
शक्रेण सह यच्छच्या यल्लक्ष्म्या हरिणा सह ।
यद्गौर्याः शंभुना सार्धं तत्ते भवतु मङ्गलम् ॥ ४८ ॥
śakreṇa saha yacchacyā yallakṣmyā hariṇā saha ,
yadgauryāḥ śaṃbhunā sārdhaṃ tatte bhavatu maṅgalam 48
48. śakreṇa saha yat śacyā yat lakṣmyā hariṇā saha yat
gauryāḥ śambhunā sārdham tat te bhavatu maṅgalam
48. yat śacyā śakreṇa saha (vartate),
yat lakṣmyā hariṇā saha (vartate),
yat gauryāḥ śambhunā sārdham (vartate),
tat maṅgalam te bhavatu.
48. May you have that same auspiciousness (maṅgalam) which Śacī shares with Indra, which Lakṣmī shares with Hari, and which Gaurī shares with Śambhu.
पद्मकोशाङ्कुरहृदा लोलनीलोत्पलेक्षणा ।
आमोदशुभझांकारा स्वास्थिता पद्मिनीव सा ॥ ४९ ॥
padmakośāṅkurahṛdā lolanīlotpalekṣaṇā ,
āmodaśubhajhāṃkārā svāsthitā padminīva sā 49
49. padmakośāṅkurahṛdā lolanīlotpalekṣaṇā
āmodaśubhajhaṃkārā svāsthitā padminī iva sā

49. With a heart like a budding lotus, with restless eyes like blue water-lilies, and with auspicious humming sounds of delight (like bees around a lotus), she stood firm, like a beautiful lotus pond (padminī).
सुरक्तपल्लवकरा स्तनस्तबकधारिणी ।
त्वमनेकफला मन्ये कामकल्पतरोर्लता ॥ ५० ॥
suraktapallavakarā stanastabakadhāriṇī ,
tvamanekaphalā manye kāmakalpatarorlatā 50
50. suraktapallavakarā stanastabakadhāriṇī

50. (he) manye (i consider/believe) tvam suraktapallavakarā stanastabakadhāriṇī anekaphalā kāmakalpataroḥ latā (asi).
50. With hands like very red, fresh sprouts and bearing breast-clusters (of abundant form), I consider you to be a creeper of the wish-fulfilling tree (kalpataru) of love, yielding many fruits.
हिमशीतावदाताङ्गी ज्योत्स्नाप्रसरहासिनी ।
पूर्णेन्दुश्रीरिवोद्युक्ता हृष्टैवाह्लादयस्यलम् ॥ ५१ ॥
himaśītāvadātāṅgī jyotsnāprasarahāsinī ,
pūrṇenduśrīrivodyuktā hṛṣṭaivāhlādayasyalam 51
51. With thy cold and cooling body, and thy moon like face and its smiles as moon beams, thou art as beautiful as the full-moon, and equally delightful to sight.
तदुत्तिष्ठ वरारोहे वेदीं वैवाहिकीं स्वयम् ।
तत्र पुष्पलताजालैः काण्डं प्रति शिलाङ्कितैः ॥ ५२ ॥
taduttiṣṭha varārohe vedīṃ vaivāhikīṃ svayam ,
tatra puṣpalatājālaiḥ kāṇḍaṃ prati śilāṅkitaiḥ 52
52. Rise therefore my beauteous lady and ascend on the matrimonial altar, and there perform the marriage ceremony, standing on the slab of stone, marked with creeping plants and their fruits.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
मुक्ताकुसुमजालानां प्रकरैः स्तबकोपमैः ।
चतुर्दिक्कं चतुर्भिश्च नालिकेरमहाफलैः ॥ ५३ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
muktākusumajālānāṃ prakaraiḥ stabakopamaiḥ ,
caturdikkaṃ caturbhiśca nālikeramahāphalaiḥ 53
53. Vasishtha said:—The altar was studded with strings of pearls, and bunches of flowers suspended on all sides; and it had four large cocoanut fruits, hang over the four sides of its square.
पूर्णकुम्भैस्तथा गङ्गावारिपूर्णैः प्रकल्पितैः ।
ज्वालयामासतुस्तस्या मध्ये चन्दनदारुभिः ॥ ५४ ॥
pūrṇakumbhaistathā gaṅgāvāripūrṇaiḥ prakalpitaiḥ ,
jvālayāmāsatustasyā madhye candanadārubhiḥ 54
54. There were pots filled with the holy water of Ganga set about it, and the sacred matrimonial fire was lighted amidst it, and fed with the fuel of the sandal wood and other fragrances.
ज्वलनं ज्वालितज्वालं दक्षिणस्थं प्रदक्षिणम् ।
पूर्वाभिमुखमेवाग्नेरग्रे पल्लवविष्टरे ॥ ५५ ॥
jvalanaṃ jvālitajvālaṃ dakṣiṇasthaṃ pradakṣiṇam ,
pūrvābhimukhamevāgneragre pallavaviṣṭare 55
55. jvalanam jvālitajvālam dakṣiṇastham pradakṣiṇam
pūrvābhimukham eva agneḥ agre pallavaviṣṭare

55. The blazing fire, with its flames kindled, was placed to the south, auspiciously, and indeed facing east, upon a seat of sprouts in front of the main fire altar.
नियोज्य दंपती कान्तौ तयोर्विविशतुः स्वयम् ।
स हुत्वा तिललाजानि पावकाय शिखिध्वजः ॥ ५६ ॥
niyojya daṃpatī kāntau tayorviviśatuḥ svayam ,
sa hutvā tilalājāni pāvakāya śikhidhvajaḥ 56
56. niyojya dampatī kāntau tayoḥ viviśatuḥ svayam
saḥ hutvā tilalājāni pāvakāya śikhidhvajaḥ

56. Having arranged the beautiful couple, he, Skanda (śikhidhvaja), offered sesame and parched rice to the fire. The two of them (the couple) then sat down themselves.
उत्थायोत्थाय कान्तां स पाणिभ्यां स्वयमाददे ।
अन्योन्यं शोभमानौ तौ भवाविव वने शिवौ ॥ ५७ ॥
utthāyotthāya kāntāṃ sa pāṇibhyāṃ svayamādade ,
anyonyaṃ śobhamānau tau bhavāviva vane śivau 57
57. utthāya utthāya kāntām saḥ pāṇibhyām svayam ādade

57. Repeatedly rising, he (Skanda) himself took his beloved (Devasenā) with both hands. Mutually radiant, they both shone like Śiva and Pārvatī (bhava and śiva) in the forest.
चक्रतुर्दंपती तस्य पावकस्य प्रदक्षिणम् ।
स्वदायं ज्ञानसर्वस्वं हृदयं प्रेम चापलम् ॥ ५८ ॥
cakraturdaṃpatī tasya pāvakasya pradakṣiṇam ,
svadāyaṃ jñānasarvasvaṃ hṛdayaṃ prema cāpalam 58
58. cakratuḥ dampatī tasya pāvakasya pradakṣiṇam
svadāyam jñānasarvasvam hṛdayam prema cāpalam
58. dampatī tasya pāvakasya pradakṣiṇam svadāyam

58. The couple performed a clockwise circumambulation (pradakṣiṇam) of that fire, offering their own gift: the totality of their knowledge, their heart, their love, and their agility.
ददतुस्तौ मिथोऽन्योन्यस्मितकान्तमुखश्रियौ ।
प्रदक्षिणत्रयं कृत्वा लाजांस्त्यक्त्वाथ वह्नये ॥ ५९ ॥
dadatustau mitho'nyonyasmitakāntamukhaśriyau ,
pradakṣiṇatrayaṃ kṛtvā lājāṃstyaktvātha vahnaye 59
59. dadatuḥ tau mithaḥ anyonya-smita-kānta-mukha-śriyau
pra-dakṣiṇa-trayam kṛtvā lājān tyaktvā atha vahnaye

59. Having performed three circumambulations and then offered parched grains to the fire, the two of them, their faces charming with mutual smiles, exchanged glances.
भार्यावरौ समं तुष्टौ करौ तत्यजतुः क्रमात् ।
स्मयमानमुखौ कान्तौ चन्द्राविव नवोदितौ ॥ ६० ॥
bhāryāvarau samaṃ tuṣṭau karau tatyajatuḥ kramāt ,

60. The happy bride and groom, with smiling, charming faces, released their hands one after another, like two newly risen moons.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे चन्द्रश्चतुर्भागं नभस्तलात् ॥ ६१ ॥

61. They entered the new flower bed, which had been arranged beforehand. Meanwhile, the moon traversed a fourth part of the sky's expanse.

तस्मिंश्च ललनाछिद्रं द्रष्टुं दृष्टिरिवाभितः ॥ ६२ ॥

62. The moon slowly traversed, as if to behold the beauty of these two. And in that (moon), it was as if a gaze searched all around to find a woman's blemish.

तैस्तैर्नवकथालापैरिन्दावभ्युदिते त्वथ ॥ ६३ ॥
lolaḥ saṃcarayāmāsa karānindurlatāgṛhe ,

63. Then, when the moon had risen, the restless moon spread its rays within the arbor, as if engaging in various new conversations.
तावासांचक्रतुः कान्तौ दंपती सुमुहूर्तकम् ।
अथोत्थाय ज्वलद्रत्नदीपां काञ्चनकन्दराम् ॥ ६४ ॥
tāvāsāṃcakratuḥ kāntau daṃpatī sumuhūrtakam ,
athotthāya jvaladratnadīpāṃ kāñcanakandarām 64
64. tau āsāṃcakratuḥ kāntau dampatī sumuhūrtakam |

64. Those two beloved ones, the couple, stayed for a short while. Then, having risen, they [prepared to enter] a golden cavern, illuminated by glittering jewel-lamps.
स्वयं पूर्वोपरचितां गुप्तां विविशतुः प्रियौ ।
ददर्शतुर्नवं तत्र तल्पं कुसुमकल्पितम् ॥ ६५ ॥
svayaṃ pūrvoparacitāṃ guptāṃ viviśatuḥ priyau ,
dadarśaturnavaṃ tatra talpaṃ kusumakalpitam 65

65. The two beloved ones themselves entered the secret, previously arranged [cavern]. There, they saw a new bed (talpa), fashioned from flowers.
परितो व्याप्तमुत्कीर्णैर्हेमपङ्कजराशिभिः ।
मन्दारादिभिरन्यैश्च पुष्पैर्ग्लानिविवर्जितैः ॥ ६६ ॥

66. The bed (talpa) was covered all around by scattered heaps of golden lotuses, and by Mandāra flowers and other unwithered blossoms.
उच्चकैः सुप्रमाणेन निर्मितैः कुसुमैः समैः ।
दीर्घेन्दुबिम्बप्रतिमैस्तुषारस्थलशीतलैः ॥ ६७ ॥
uccakaiḥ supramāṇena nirmitaiḥ kusumaiḥ samaiḥ ,

67. They were high, perfectly proportioned, made to be soft and beautiful like flowers, resembling large moon-orbs, and cool like a snow-covered place.
क्षीरोदजलधाराभं ज्योत्स्नासंपिण्डसुन्दरम् ।
प्रतिबिम्बमनङ्गस्य नतं भित्ताविव स्थितम् ॥ ६८ ॥

68. An image (pratibimba) of the god of love (Ananga), resembling a stream of water from the milk ocean, beautiful as a concentrated mass of moonlight, and inclined as if situated on a wall.
सुगन्धमुन्नतं कान्तं चिरादन्यतयोत्थितम् ।
मिथुनं पुष्पराशौ तन्न्यषीदत्परितोऽमले ।
तस्मिन्समसमाभोगे क्षीरोदे मन्दरो यथा ॥ ६९ ॥
sugandhamunnataṃ kāntaṃ cirādanyatayotthitam ,
mithunaṃ puṣparāśau tannyaṣīdatparito'male ,
tasminsamasamābhoge kṣīrode mandaro yathā 69
69. sugandham unnatam kāntam cirāt
anyatayā utthitam mithunam puṣparāśau
tat nyaṣīdat paritaḥ amale tasmin
samasamābhoge kṣīrode mandaraḥ yathā
69. tat sugandham unnatam kāntam cirāt anyatayā utthitam mithunam amale puṣparāśau paritaḥ nyaṣīdat.

69. That fragrant, elevated, beautiful couple (mithuna), which had appeared as if transformed after a long time, sat down all around on a pure pile of flowers. They were like Mount Mandara resting in the milk ocean, which was vast and uniformly expansive.
तैस्तैर्मिथः प्रणयपेशलवाग्विलासैस्तत्कालकार्यसुभगैः प्रणयोपचारैः ।
सत्कान्तयोर्नवनवेन तयोः सुखेन दीर्घा मुहूर्त इव सा रजनी जगाम ॥ ७० ॥
taistairmithaḥ praṇayapeśalavāgvilāsaistatkālakāryasubhagaiḥ praṇayopacāraiḥ ,
satkāntayornavanavena tayoḥ sukhena dīrghā muhūrta iva sā rajanī jagāma 70

satkāntayoḥ navanaveṇa tayoḥ sukhena

70. By those various charming and delicate playful words of mutual love and by the lovely services of love appropriate for that moment, and by the ever-renewed happiness of those two worthy lovers, that long night passed as if it were but a moment.
