कस्मिंश्चिदन्यत्र जगत्यपूर्वे दृष्टं मयेदं श्रृणु किं विचित्रम् ।
महाघवृत्तान्तदशासमानमविद्ययान्धेन बलात्कृतं यत् ॥ १ ॥

1. vipaścit uvāca: śṛṇu! mayā kasmin cit anyatra apūrve jagati idam dṛṣṭam.
kim vicitram (tat) yat andhena avidyayā mahāghavṛttāntadaśāsamānam balātkṛtam.
1. The wise one said: "Listen! I witnessed something extraordinary elsewhere in an unprecedented world. How strange it was: a situation that was forcefully brought about by a blind (being) and by ignorance (avidyā), akin to the state of a grave misfortune."
अस्ति क्वचित्खे भवतामगम्ये जगज्ज्वलद्दीप्तिविचित्रसर्गः ।
एतादृगप्यम्बरतस्तदन्यत् स्वाप्नं पुरं जाग्रति चेतसीव ॥ २ ॥
asti kvacitkhe bhavatāmagamye jagajjvaladdīptivicitrasargaḥ ,
etādṛgapyambaratastadanyat svāpnaṃ puraṃ jāgrati cetasīva 2
2. asti kvacit khe bhavatām agamye
jagat jvaladdīptivicitrasargaḥ
etādṛk api ambarataḥ tat anyat
svāpnam puram jāgrati cetasi iva
2. kvacit bhavatām agamye khe,
jagat jvaladdīptivicitrasargaḥ asti.
etādṛk api,
ambarataḥ tat anyat svāpnam puram,
jāgrati cetasi iva (asti).
2. Somewhere in space, inaccessible to you all, exists a world with wondrously diverse creation and blazing splendor. Even such a magnificent entity, appearing as if from the heavens, is merely like a city seen in a dream by a waking consciousness, distinct from ultimate reality.
तस्मिन्मया विहरता हृदयस्थमर्थमन्वेष्टुमक्षि निहितं ककुभां मुखेषु ।
पश्यामि यावदचलप्रतिमा धरायां छायालिजालमलिना परिबंभ्रमीति ॥ ३ ॥
tasminmayā viharatā hṛdayasthamarthamanveṣṭumakṣi nihitaṃ kakubhāṃ mukheṣu ,
paśyāmi yāvadacalapratimā dharāyāṃ chāyālijālamalinā paribaṃbhramīti 3
3. tasmin mayā viharatā hṛdayastham artham
anveṣṭum akṣi nihitam kakubhām
mukheṣu paśyāmi yāvat acalapratimā dharāyām
chāyālijālamalinā paribambhramīti
3. tasmin viharatā mayā hṛdayastham artham anveṣṭum akṣi kakubhām mukheṣu nihitam.
yāvat paśyāmi (tāvat) dharāyām acalapratimā chāyālijālamalinā (kācit) paribambhramīti.
3. While wandering in that (world), I fixed my gaze in all directions to seek the purpose (artha) residing within my heart. As I looked, I saw a mountain-like entity on the earth, wandering about repeatedly, darkened by a multitude of shadows.
आश्चर्यमात्रमुचितं किमिदं निमेषादित्यक्षि वै जगति यावदहं त्यजामि ।
खात्तावदद्रिमतुलं पुरुषाकृतिं द्रागावर्तवृत्तिभिरपश्यमहं पतन्तम् ॥ ४ ॥
āścaryamātramucitaṃ kimidaṃ nimeṣādityakṣi vai jagati yāvadahaṃ tyajāmi ,
khāttāvadadrimatulaṃ puruṣākṛtiṃ drāgāvartavṛttibhirapaśyamahaṃ patantam 4
4. āścaryamātram ucitam kim idam nimeṣāt
iti akṣi vai jagati yāvat aham tyajāmi
khāt tāvat adrimatulam puruṣākṛtim drāk
āvartavṛttibhiḥ apaśyam aham patantam
4. aham (kathayāmi) "idam kim āścaryamātram ucitam?" iti.
yāvat aham jagati akṣi nimeṣāt vai tyajāmi,
tāvat aham khāt drāk āvartavṛttibhiḥ patantam adrimatulam puruṣākṛtim apaśyam.
4. Exclaiming, 'What is this appropriate and utter marvel?', as soon as I averted my gaze from the world for a moment, I then swiftly saw from the sky an unparalleled, mountain-like entity in human form, falling with swirling movements.
कः स्यादयं गिरिगुरुः पुरुषो विराड्वा पर्यस्तपर्वतवदाशु पतच्छरीरः ।
आकाशपूरकवपुः परमाम्बरोऽपि यो नैव भाति पिहिताखिलवासरश्रीः ॥ ५ ॥
kaḥ syādayaṃ giriguruḥ puruṣo virāḍvā paryastaparvatavadāśu pataccharīraḥ ,
ākāśapūrakavapuḥ paramāmbaro'pi yo naiva bhāti pihitākhilavāsaraśrīḥ 5
5. kaḥ syāt ayam giriguruḥ puruṣaḥ virāṭ
vā paryastaparvatavat āśu patat śarīraḥ
ākāśapūrakavapuḥ paramāmbaraḥ api
yaḥ na eva bhāti pihitākhilavāsaraśrīḥ
5. ayam giriguruḥ puruṣaḥ vā virāṭ kaḥ syāt? paryastaparvatavat āśu patat-śarīraḥ,
ākāśapūraka-vapuḥ,
yaḥ paramāmbaraḥ api (san),
pihitākhilavāsaraśrīḥ (ataḥ) na eva bhāti (saḥ kaḥ syāt)?
5. Who might this be? This entity, heavy as a mountain - is it a person (puruṣa) or a universal being (virāṭ)? Its body falls swiftly like an overturned mountain, its form fills the entire sky. And though it resembles the supreme space (paramāmbara) itself, it does not shine at all, for the splendor of all days is concealed by it.
एवंविधां हृदि मनाक्कलयामि यावत्तावत्पपात सहसा नभसो विवस्वान् ।
कल्पान्तवातपरिवृत्तपितामहाण्डपृष्ठावपातघनघोषजुषा जवेन ॥ ६ ॥
evaṃvidhāṃ hṛdi manākkalayāmi yāvattāvatpapāta sahasā nabhaso vivasvān ,
kalpāntavātaparivṛttapitāmahāṇḍapṛṣṭhāvapātaghanaghoṣajuṣā javena 6
6. evaṃvidhām hṛdi manāk kalayāmi yāvat
tāvat papāta sahasā nabhasaḥ vivasvān
kalpāntavātaparivṛttapitāmahāṇḍapṛṣṭhāvapataghanaghoṣajuṣā

6. yāvat hṛdi manāk evaṃvidhām kalayāmi

6. As I was contemplating such a vision slightly in my heart, suddenly the Sun (Vivasvat) fell from the sky with great speed, accompanied by a deep, thundering sound, like the collapsing of Brahmā's cosmic egg shaken by the winds at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpānta).
तस्मिन्पतति भीमात्मन्यपारावारदेहिनि ।
सप्तद्वीपां वसुमतीं परिपूरयति क्षणात् ॥ ७ ॥
tasminpatati bhīmātmanyapārāvāradehini ,
saptadvīpāṃ vasumatīṃ paripūrayati kṣaṇāt 7
7. tasmin patati bhīmātmani apārāvāradehini
saptadvīpām vasumatīm paripūrayati kṣaṇāt
7. tasmin bhīmātmani apārāvāradehini patati
kṣaṇāt saptadvīpām vasumatīm paripūrayati
7. As that Sun (Vivasvat), dreadful in its nature and with a boundless form, fell, it instantly filled the seven-islanded earth (vasumatī) completely.
स्वात्मनो नाशमाशंक्य सद्वीपभुवनैः सह ।
अवश्यभाविपार्श्वस्थमहमग्निमथाविशम् ॥ ८ ॥
svātmano nāśamāśaṃkya sadvīpabhuvanaiḥ saha ,
avaśyabhāvipārśvasthamahamagnimathāviśam 8
8. svātmanaḥ nāśam āśaṅkya sa-dvīpabhuvanaiḥ saha
avaśyabhāvipārśvastham aham agnim atha āviśam
8. aham sa-dvīpabhuvanaiḥ saha svātmanaḥ nāśam
āśaṅkya atha avaśyabhāvipārśvastham agnim āviśam
8. Fearing the destruction of my own being (ātman) along with all the islands and worlds, I then entered the fire (agni) that was inevitably present by my side.
स जातवेदा भगवान्जन्मान्तरशतार्चितः ।
मा भैषीरिति देहेन मामुवाचेन्दुशीतलः ॥ ९ ॥
sa jātavedā bhagavānjanmāntaraśatārcitaḥ ,
mā bhaiṣīriti dehena māmuvācenduśītalaḥ 9
9. saḥ jātavedāḥ bhagavān janmāntaraśatārcitaḥ
mā bhaiṣīḥ iti dehena mām uvāca induśītalaḥ
9. saḥ janmāntaraśatārcitaḥ induśītalaḥ bhagavān
jātavedāḥ dehena mā bhaiṣīḥ iti mām uvāca
9. That divine fire (Jātavedas), worshipped by me for hundreds of previous lives, spoke to me through his form, which was cool as the moon, saying, 'Do not fear!'
जय देव त्वमस्माकं प्रतिजन्म परायणम् ।
अकाल एव कल्पान्तो जातोऽतः पाहि मां प्रभो ॥ १० ॥
jaya deva tvamasmākaṃ pratijanma parāyaṇam ,
akāla eva kalpānto jāto'taḥ pāhi māṃ prabho 10
10. jaya deva tvam asmākam pratijanma parāyaṇam
akālaḥ eva kalpāntaḥ jātaḥ ataḥ pāhi mām prabho
10. deva jaya! tvam asmākam pratijanma parāyaṇam.
akālaḥ eva kalpāntaḥ jātaḥ.
ataḥ prabho,
mām pāhi.
10. Victory to you, O God! You are our ultimate refuge (parāyaṇa) in every single birth. Since an untimely cosmic dissolution (kalpānta) has occurred, therefore, O Lord, please protect me.
इत्युक्तेनाग्निना प्रोक्तं मा भैषीरिति तत्पुनः ।
उत्तिष्ठागच्छ गच्छावो मल्लोकमिति चानघ ॥ ११ ॥
ityuktenāgninā proktaṃ mā bhaiṣīriti tatpunaḥ ,
uttiṣṭhāgaccha gacchāvo mallokamiti cānagha 11
11. iti uktena agninā proktam mā bhaiṣīḥ iti tat punaḥ
uttiṣṭha āgaccha gacchāvaḥ mat lokam iti ca anagha
11. iti uktena agninā punaḥ proktam tat ca: anagha,
mā bhaiṣīḥ! uttiṣṭha,
āgaccha,
mat lokam gacchāvaḥ iti.
11. When the speaker (King Parīkṣit) had thus spoken, Agni (the fire god) again said to him, 'Do not fear! Arise, come, let us both go to my world (loka),' O sinless one (anagha).
इत्युक्त्वा शुकपृष्ठेऽसावारोप्य भगवांस्ततः ।
देहैकदेशे तत्पाति भूतं दग्ध्वा नभः प्लुतः ॥ १२ ॥
ityuktvā śukapṛṣṭhe'sāvāropya bhagavāṃstataḥ ,
dehaikadeśe tatpāti bhūtaṃ dagdhvā nabhaḥ plutaḥ 12
12. iti uktvā śukapṛṣṭhe asau āropya bhagavān tataḥ
dehaikadeśe tatpāti bhūtam dagdhvā nabhaḥ plutaḥ
12. iti uktvā,
bhagavān asau śukapṛṣṭhe āropya.
tataḥ dehaikadeśe tatpāti bhūtam dagdhvā,
nabhaḥ plutaḥ.
12. Having said this, the Lord (Agni) then placed him (the king) on the back of a parrot. After burning the being (bhūta) that had fallen onto a part of the king's body, he (Agni) flew into the sky.
अनन्तरं नभः प्राप्य दृष्टः कष्टाकृतिर्मया ।
स तादृग्भूतसंपातमहोत्पातो भयप्रदः ॥ १३ ॥
anantaraṃ nabhaḥ prāpya dṛṣṭaḥ kaṣṭākṛtirmayā ,
sa tādṛgbhūtasaṃpātamahotpāto bhayapradaḥ 13
13. anantaram nabhaḥ prāpya dṛṣṭaḥ kaṣṭākṛtiḥ mayā
saḥ tādṛk bhūtasaṃpāta mahotpātaḥ bhayapradaḥ
13. anantaram nabhaḥ prāpya,
mayā kaṣṭākṛtiḥ dṛṣṭaḥ.
saḥ tādṛk bhūtasaṃpāta mahotpātaḥ bhayapradaḥ.
13. Afterwards, having reached the sky, a frightful form (or a distressed appearance) was seen by me. That fall of such a being (bhūta) was a great and fear-inducing omen (utpāta).
तस्मिन्जवेन पतिते वसुधा चचाल साम्भोधिशैलवनपत्तनजङ्गलौघा ।
चक्रे भृगुद्वयमयानजलस्रवन्ती भीमाकृतीन्व्यधुरदेहविभेदगर्तान् ॥ १४ ॥
tasminjavena patite vasudhā cacāla sāmbhodhiśailavanapattanajaṅgalaughā ,
cakre bhṛgudvayamayānajalasravantī bhīmākṛtīnvyadhuradehavibhedagartān 14
14. tasmin javena patite vasudhā cacāla

14. Upon his swift fall, the earth trembled, along with its oceans, mountains, forests, cities, and thickets. It (the earth) formed deep gorges resembling twin cliffs, while water channels (rivers) created terrible-looking craters that split the land.
उर्वी ररास ककुबुत्तरतो ररास पूर्वा ररास विररास च दक्षिणा दिक् ।
द्यौराररास विररास सशैलभूतं सर्वं जगत्प्रलयसंभ्रमभीतमुच्चैः ॥ १५ ॥
urvī rarāsa kakubuttarato rarāsa pūrvā rarāsa virarāsa ca dakṣiṇā dik ,
dyaurārarāsa virarāsa saśailabhūtaṃ sarvaṃ jagatpralayasaṃbhramabhītamuccaiḥ 15

dyauḥ ārarāsa virarāsa saśailabhūtam
sarvam jagat pralayasaṃbhramabhītam uccaiḥ

15. The earth roared, the northern quarter roared, the eastern (quarter) roared, and the southern direction shrieked intensely. The sky roared loudly, and the entire world, with its mountains and creatures, shrieked intensely, loudly terrified by the confusion of dissolution (pralaya).
उर्वी ररास धरणे सविरावरंहःसंरम्भतर्जितसमस्तदिगन्तरासा ।
व्योमापि घुंघुममलङ्घ्यमलं चकार नागारिवृन्दभयविद्रवणप्रचण्डम् ॥ १६ ॥
urvī rarāsa dharaṇe savirāvaraṃhaḥsaṃrambhatarjitasamastadigantarāsā ,
vyomāpi ghuṃghumamalaṅghyamalaṃ cakāra nāgārivṛndabhayavidravaṇapracaṇḍam 16

api ghuṃghumam alaṅghyam alam cakāra
nāgārivṛndabhayavidravaṇapracaṇḍam
16. saviravaraṃhasaṃrambhatarjitasamastadigantarāśā urvī dharaṇe rarāsa.
vyoma api ghuṃghumam alaṅghyam nāgārivṛndabhayavidravaṇapracaṇḍam alam cakāra.
16. The earth roared, bearing (this terror), terrifying all intermediate directions with the fury of its manifold roaring speed. The sky also produced an insurmountable, rumbling sound, terribly fierce, causing the fearful scattering of even the hosts of Garudas.
निर्घातशब्द उदभूदभितो भयाय भीमाय भूधरदरीदृढदारणोत्थः ।
उत्पातभीमजवजालयुगान्तवातसंरब्धकल्पघनघोषवितीर्णतर्जः ॥ १७ ॥
nirghātaśabda udabhūdabhito bhayāya bhīmāya bhūdharadarīdṛḍhadāraṇotthaḥ ,
utpātabhīmajavajālayugāntavātasaṃrabdhakalpaghanaghoṣavitīrṇatarjaḥ 17
17. nirghātaśabdaḥ udabhūt abhitaḥ bhayāya
bhīmāya bhūdharadarīdṛḍhadāraṇotthaḥ
utpātabhīmajavajālayugāntavātasaṃrabdhakalpaghanaghoṣavitīrṇatarjaḥ
17. abhitaḥ bhīmāya bhayāya,
bhūdharadarīdṛḍhadāraṇotthaḥ utpātabhīmajavajālayugāntavātasaṃrabdhakalpaghanaghoṣavitīrṇatarjaḥ nirghātaśabdaḥ udabhūt.
17. A thunderclap arose all around, for terrible fear, originating from the mighty splitting of mountain caves. It was a terrifying sound, delivered like the roar of furiously agitated cosmic clouds at the end of a cosmic cycle, intensified by the terrifying, swift multitude of winds from the doomsday (yugānta) dissolution.
तस्मिञ्जवेन पतिते वसुधा ररास सारावदिंमुखतया शतवेधमागात् ।
तत्रास्फुटन्कुलगिरीन्द्रमहातटानि पातालदेशमविशन्हिमवच्छिरांसि ॥ १८ ॥
tasmiñjavena patite vasudhā rarāsa sārāvadiṃmukhatayā śatavedhamāgāt ,
tatrāsphuṭankulagirīndramahātaṭāni pātāladeśamaviśanhimavacchirāṃsi 18
18. tasmin javena patite vasudhā rarāsa
sārāvadimukhatayā śata-vedham āgāt
tatra asphuṭan kula-girīndra-mahātaṭāni
pātāla-deśam aviśan himavat śirāṃsi
18. tasmin javena patite,
vasudhā rarāsa,
sārāvadimukhatayā śata-vedham āgāt.
tatra kula-girīndra-mahātaṭāni asphuṭan,
himavat śirāṃsi pātāla-deśam aviśan.
18. When he fell with great speed, the earth roared, and due to the immense downward force, it was pierced in a hundred places. There, the vast slopes of the chief ancestral mountains burst apart, and the peaks of the Himalayas plunged into the netherworld (pātāla-deśa).
आसीत्तत्पतनं तस्य मेरुशैलशिलाकृतेः ।
दलनं शैलश्रृङ्गाणां विदारणकरं भुवः ॥ १९ ॥
āsīttatpatanaṃ tasya meruśailaśilākṛteḥ ,
dalanaṃ śailaśrṛṅgāṇāṃ vidāraṇakaraṃ bhuvaḥ 19
19. āsīt tat patanam tasya meru-śaila-śilā-kṛteḥ
dalanam śaila-śṛṅgāṇām vidāraṇa-karam bhuvaḥ
19. meru-śaila-śilā-kṛteḥ tasya tat patanam,
śaila-śṛṅgāṇām dalanam,
bhuvaḥ vidāraṇa-karam āsīt.
19. The fall of that being, whose form was like rock from Mount Meru, was the shattering of mountain peaks and the rending of the earth.
क्षोभणं जलराशीनामद्रीणां भूतलार्पणम् ।
पीडनं सर्वभूतानां क्रीडनं प्रलयार्थिनाम् ॥ २० ॥
kṣobhaṇaṃ jalarāśīnāmadrīṇāṃ bhūtalārpaṇam ,
pīḍanaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ krīḍanaṃ pralayārthinām 20
20. kṣobhaṇam jala-rāśīnām adrīṇām bhūtala-arpaṇam
pīḍanam sarva-bhūtānām krīḍanam pralaya-arthinām
20. jala-rāśīnām kṣobhaṇam,
adrīṇām bhūtala-arpaṇam,
sarva-bhūtānām pīḍanam,
pralaya-arthinām krīḍanam.
20. It was the stirring of the oceans, the casting down of mountains onto the earth's surface, the affliction of all living beings, and the amusement of those who desire cosmic dissolution (pralaya).
पातनं भूतले भानोः स्थगनं द्वीपपद्धतेः ।
चूर्णीकरणमद्रीणां दलनं मण्डलावनेः ॥ २१ ॥
pātanaṃ bhūtale bhānoḥ sthaganaṃ dvīpapaddhateḥ ,
cūrṇīkaraṇamadrīṇāṃ dalanaṃ maṇḍalāvaneḥ 21
21. pātanam bhū-tale bhānoḥ sthaganam dvīpa-paddhateḥ
cūrṇī-karaṇam adrīṇām dalanam maṇḍala-avaneḥ
21. bhānoḥ bhū-tale pātanam,
dvīpa-paddhateḥ sthaganam,
adrīṇām cūrṇī-karaṇam,
maṇḍala-avaneḥ dalanam.
21. It was the falling of the sun (bhānu) onto the earth's surface, the obstruction of the arrangement of continents, the pulverization of mountains, and the shattering of the entire circle of the earth.
द्वितीयमिव भूपीठं ब्रह्माण्डार्धमिवापरम् ।
पतितं खमिवाकृत्या तदपश्यन्नभश्चराः ॥ २२ ॥
dvitīyamiva bhūpīṭhaṃ brahmāṇḍārdhamivāparam ,
patitaṃ khamivākṛtyā tadapaśyannabhaścarāḥ 22
22. dvitīyam iva bhūpīṭham brahmāṇḍa-ardham iva aparam
patitam kham iva ākṛtyā tat apaśyan nabhaḥ-carāḥ
22. nabhaḥ-carāḥ tat apaśyan,
[yat] dvitīyam bhūpīṭham iva,
aparam brahmāṇḍa-ardham iva,
ākṛtyā patitam kham iva [āsa].
22. The celestial beings saw that (object) fallen, appearing like a second foundation for the earth, or another half of the universe, and in its form, it was as if the very sky had descended.
अथ पश्याम्यहं यावदसौ मांसमयोऽचलः ।
न माति सप्तद्वीपायां भुवि तस्याङ्गमेककम् ॥ २३ ॥
atha paśyāmyahaṃ yāvadasau māṃsamayo'calaḥ ,
na māti saptadvīpāyāṃ bhuvi tasyāṅgamekakam 23
23. atha paśyāmi aham yāvat asau māṃsamayaḥ acalaḥ
na māti sapta-dvīpāyām bhuvi tasya aṅgam ekakam
23. atha aham yāvat paśyāmi,
asau māṃsamayaḥ acalaḥ [asti].
tasya ekakam aṅgam api sapta-dvīpāyām bhuvi na māti.
23. Then, as I watched, that mountain-like mass of flesh appeared. A single limb of it could not fit on the earth with its seven continents.
तमालोक्य मया देवः प्रसादे समवस्थितः ।
संपृष्टो भगवान्वह्निः प्रभो किमिदमित्यथ ॥ २४ ॥
tamālokya mayā devaḥ prasāde samavasthitaḥ ,
saṃpṛṣṭo bhagavānvahniḥ prabho kimidamityatha 24
24. tam ālokya mayā devaḥ prasāde samavasthitaḥ
sampṛṣṭaḥ bhagavān vahniḥ prabho kim idam iti atha
24. tam ālokya,
mayā prasāde samavasthitaḥ devaḥ bhagavān vahniḥ atha "prabho,
kim idam?" iti sampṛṣṭaḥ.
24. Having seen that, I questioned the divine Lord Vahni (Agni), who was present in his grace, asking, "Lord, what is this?"
कथं मांसमयः सार्धं स चार्कः पतितो दिवः ।
स न माति हि भूपीठे सपर्वतवनाम्बुधौ ॥ २५ ॥
kathaṃ māṃsamayaḥ sārdhaṃ sa cārkaḥ patito divaḥ ,
sa na māti hi bhūpīṭhe saparvatavanāmbudhau 25
25. katham māṃsamayaḥ sārdham sa ca arkaḥ patitaḥ divaḥ
sa na māti hi bhūpīṭhe sa-parvata-vana-ambudhau
25. katham sa arkaḥ māṃsamayaḥ sārdham divaḥ patitaḥ ca? hi sa sa-parvata-vana-ambudhau bhūpīṭhe na māti.
25. How could that sun (Surya) have fallen from the sky, accompanied by a mass of flesh? Indeed, it does not fit on the earth's surface, which includes mountains, forests, and oceans.
अग्निरुवाच ।
प्रतिपालय पुत्र त्वं क्षणमेकं गतत्वरः ।
यावच्छाम्यतु दोषोऽयं कथयिष्यामि ते ततः ॥ २६ ॥
agniruvāca ,
pratipālaya putra tvaṃ kṣaṇamekaṃ gatatvaraḥ ,
yāvacchāmyatu doṣo'yaṃ kathayiṣyāmi te tataḥ 26
26. agniḥ uvāca pratipālaya putra tvam kṣaṇam ekam gatatvaraḥ
yāvat śāmyatu doṣaḥ ayam kathayiṣyāmi te tataḥ
26. agniḥ uvāca putra tvam gatatvaraḥ ekam kṣaṇam yāvat
ayam doṣaḥ śāmyatu pratipālaya tataḥ te kathayiṣyāmi
26. Agni said: "Son, wait patiently for one moment, until this impediment (doṣa) subsides. Then I will tell you."
अथ तस्मिन्वदत्येवं समाजग्मुर्नभश्चराः ।
तज्जगज्जालजातीया दिग्भ्यो गगनजाखिलाः ॥ २७ ॥
atha tasminvadatyevaṃ samājagmurnabhaścarāḥ ,
tajjagajjālajātīyā digbhyo gaganajākhilāḥ 27
27. atha tasmin vadati evam samājagmuḥ nabhaś-carāḥ
tat-jagat-jāla-jātīyāḥ digbhyaḥ gagana-jāḥ akhilāḥ
27. atha tasmin evam vadati (sati) nabhaś-carāḥ
tat-jagat-jāla-jātīyāḥ gagana-jāḥ akhilāḥ digbhyaḥ samājagmuḥ
27. Then, as he spoke thus, sky-dwellers (nabhaścarāḥ) arrived from all directions, all born of the sky, belonging to that universal network.
सिद्धसाध्याप्सरोदैत्यगन्धर्वोरगकिन्नराः ।
ऋषयो मुनयो यक्षाः पितरो मातरोऽमराः ॥ २८ ॥
siddhasādhyāpsarodaityagandharvoragakinnarāḥ ,
ṛṣayo munayo yakṣāḥ pitaro mātaro'marāḥ 28
28. siddha-sādhya-apsaras-daitya-gandharva-uraga-kinnarāḥ
ṛṣayaḥ munayaḥ yakṣāḥ pitaraḥ mātaraḥ amarāḥ
28. siddha-sādhya-apsaras-daitya-gandharva-uraga-kinnarāḥ
ṛṣayaḥ munayaḥ yakṣāḥ pitaraḥ mātaraḥ amarāḥ
28. Siddhas, Sadhyas, Apsaras, Daityas, Gandharvas, Uragas (serpents), Kinnaras, Rishis, Munis, Yakshas, Pitris (ancestors), Matris (divine mothers), and Amaras (gods).
अथ सर्वेश्वरीं देवीं शरण्यां ते नभश्चराः ।
भक्तिनम्रशिरःकायाः कालरात्रिं प्रतुष्टुवुः ॥ २९ ॥
atha sarveśvarīṃ devīṃ śaraṇyāṃ te nabhaścarāḥ ,
bhaktinamraśiraḥkāyāḥ kālarātriṃ pratuṣṭuvuḥ 29
29. atha sarva-īśvarīm devīm śaraṇyām te nabhaś-carāḥ
bhakti-namra-śiras-kāyāḥ kāla-rātrim pratuṣṭuvuḥ
29. atha te nabhaś-carāḥ bhakti-namra-śiras-kāyāḥ
sarva-īśvarīm śaraṇyām devīm kāla-rātrim pratuṣṭuvuḥ
29. Then, those sky-dwellers (nabhaścarāḥ), with their heads and bodies humbly bowed in devotion (bhakti), praised the goddess Kalaratri, who is the ruler of all and provides refuge.
नभश्चरा ऊचुः ।
बद्ध्वा खट्वाङ्गश्रृङ्गे कपिलमुरुजटामण्डलं पद्मयोनेः कृत्वा दैत्योत्तमाङ्गैः स्रजमुरसि शिरःशेखरं तार्क्ष्यपक्षैः ।
या देवी भुक्तविश्वा पिबति जगदिदं साद्रिभू पीठभूतं सा देवी निष्कलङ्का कलिततनुलता पातु नः पालनीयान् ॥ ३० ॥
nabhaścarā ūcuḥ ,
baddhvā khaṭvāṅgaśrṛṅge kapilamurujaṭāmaṇḍalaṃ padmayoneḥ kṛtvā daityottamāṅgaiḥ srajamurasi śiraḥśekharaṃ tārkṣyapakṣaiḥ ,
yā devī bhuktaviśvā pibati jagadidaṃ sādribhū pīṭhabhūtaṃ sā devī niṣkalaṅkā kalitatanulatā pātu naḥ pālanīyān 30
30. nabhaścarāḥ ūcuḥ baddhvā khaṭvāṅgaśṛṅge kapilam urujaṭāmaṇḍalam
padmayoneḥ kṛtvā daityottamāṅgaiḥ srajam urasi śiraḥśekharam
tārkṣyapakṣaiḥ yā devī bhuktaviśvā pibati jagat idam sādribhū
pīṭhabhūtam sā devī niṣkalaṅkā kalitatanulatā pātu naḥ pālanīyān
30. nabhaścarāḥ ūcuḥ yā devī,
padmayoneḥ kapilam urujaṭāmaṇḍalam khaṭvāṅgaśṛṅge baddhvā,
daityottamāṅgaiḥ urasi srajam,
tārkṣyapakṣaiḥ śiraḥśekharam kṛtvā,
bhuktaviśvā,
idam jagat sādribhū pīṭhabhūtam pibati,
sā niṣkalaṅkā kalitatanulatā devī naḥ pālanīyān pātu
30. The sky-dwellers said: May that spotless goddess (devī), whose body is adorned with creeper-like forms, protect us, who are to be protected. She is the one who, having bound the tawny, vast mass of matted hair of Brahmā (padmayoni) to the horns of a khaṭvāṅga staff, and having fashioned a garland for her chest from the heads of foremost demons and a head-crest from the wings of Garuda (tārkṣya), has consumed the universe (viśva) and drinks this world (jagat) with its mountains and lands as if it were a mere seat.
