एवमुत्पलपत्राक्ष राघवाघविपर्यये ।
पदमासादयाद्वन्द्वं विशोको भव भूतये ॥ १ ॥

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: 'Thus, O lotus-eyed Rāghava, for the complete elimination of [your] suffering (lit. sin's reversal), attain the state beyond dualities, and become free from sorrow for your ultimate well-being.'
एतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य न मनः परितप्यते ।
घोरे तमसि निर्मग्नं लब्धदीपं शिशुर्यथा ॥ २ ॥

By firmly holding onto this understanding (dṛṣṭi), the mind does not suffer, just as a child, though deeply immersed in terrible darkness, finds no distress once it has obtained a lamp.
विवेकावस्थया चेतस्तथैवायाति निर्वृतिम् ।
पतच्छ्वभ्रे दृढतृणप्रचयालम्बनादिव ॥ ३ ॥

Just as one falling into a chasm (śvabhra) finds support in a cluster of strong grass, similarly, the mind (cetas) attains profound tranquility (nirvṛti) through the state of discernment (viveka).
अथैतां पावनीं दृष्टिं भावयित्वाप्युदाहरन् ।
नित्यमेकसमाधानो भव भूषितभूतलः ॥ ४ ॥

athaitāṃ pāvanīṃ dṛṣṭiṃ bhāvayitvāpyudāharan ,

Therefore, having meditated upon this purifying understanding (dṛṣṭi) and even proclaiming it (to others), always maintain singular concentration (eka-samādhāna), and thus become an adornment for the earth.
श्रीराम उवाच ।
कथमेकसमाधानं कीदृशं वा मुनीश्वर ।
वाताहतमयूराङ्गरुहलोलं मनो भवेत् ॥ ५ ॥

Śrī Rāma said: O lord of sages (munīśvara), how can the mind (manas), which is as restless as a peacock's feathers struck by the wind, achieve singular concentration (eka-samādhāna)? And what exactly is the nature of such a state?
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
श्रृणु तस्यैव सुरघोः प्रबुद्धस्य सतस्तदा ।
पर्णादस्य च राजर्षेः संवादमिममद्भुतम् ॥ ६ ॥

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: "Listen now to this wonderful dialogue between that very Suraghu, who had by then awakened, and the royal sage Parṇāda."
राघवैकसमाधानबोधितायोजितात्मनोः ।
परस्परं समालापमिमं प्रकथयामि ते ॥ ७ ॥

O Rāghava, I shall now relate to you this mutual conversation of those two, whose inner selves (ātman) were enlightened and disciplined by a singular, focused concentration.
बभूव पारसीकानां पार्थिवः परवीरहा ।
परिघो नाम विख्यातः परिघः स्यन्दने यथा ॥ ८ ॥

There was a renowned king of the Pārasīkas (Persians) named Parigha, a slayer of hostile heroes, who was as firm and formidable as a bolt (parigha) in a chariot.
स बभूव परं मित्रं सुरघो रघुनन्दन ।
नन्दनोद्यानसंस्थस्य मदनस्येव माधवः ॥ ९ ॥

sa babhūva paraṃ mitraṃ suragho raghunandana ,
nandanodyānasaṃsthasya madanasyeva mādhavaḥ 9

saḥ babhūva param mitram suraghoḥ raghunandana
nandanodyānasaṃsthasya madanasya eva mādhavaḥ

O Rāghunandana, he (Parigha) became a most excellent friend to Suraghu, just as the spring season (mādhava) is to Madana (the god of love) dwelling in the Nandana garden.
कदाचित्परिघस्याभूदवर्षं मण्डले महत् ।
कल्पान्त इव संसारे प्रजादुष्कृतदोषजम् ॥ १० ॥

Once, a severe drought occurred in Parigha's region, as if at the end of a cosmic age (kalpa), caused by the faults of the people's misdeeds within the cycle of existence (saṃsāra).
विनेशुर्जनतास्तत्र बह्वयः क्षुत्क्षामजीविताः ।
ज्वलिते विपिने वह्नौ यथा भूतपरम्पराः ॥ ११ ॥

tatra bahvayaḥ kṣutkṣāmajīvitāḥ janatāḥ vineśuḥ

There, many populations, their lives wasted by hunger, perished, just as rows of creatures (bhūta) perish in a forest ablaze with fire.
तद्दुःखं परिघो दृष्ट्वा विषादमतुलं ययौ ।
तत्याजाश्वखिलं राज्यं दग्धं ग्राममिवाध्वगः ॥ १२ ॥

tadduḥkhaṃ parigho dṛṣṭvā viṣādamatulaṃ yayau ,

tat duḥkham parighaḥ dṛṣṭvā viṣādam atulam yayau |
tatyāja aśvakhilam rājyam dagdham grāmam iva adhvagaḥ ||

parighaḥ tat duḥkham dṛṣṭvā atulam viṣādam yayau adhvagaḥ

Seeing that suffering, Parigha became immensely despondent. He abandoned his entire kingdom, just as a traveler forsakes a village consumed by fire.
प्रजानाशप्रतीकारेष्वसमर्थो विरागवान् ।
जगाम विपिने कर्तुं तपोऽजिनमुनीन्द्रवत् ॥ १३ ॥

Being incapable of remedial actions for the destruction of his subjects, and filled with detachment (virāgavat), he went to the forest to perform austerities (tapas), just like Ajina, the foremost among sages (munīndra).

He, whose self (ātman) had become detached, resided in a distant forest unknown to the citizens, as if he were another person in a different world.
तपश्चरञ्छान्तमतिर्दान्तः कन्दरमन्दिरे ।
स्वयं शीर्णानि शुष्काणि तत्र पर्णान्यभक्षयत् ॥ १५ ॥

Performing severe asceticism (tapas) with a tranquil and self-controlled mind, he ate only the dry, withered leaves that had fallen by themselves there in his cave-dwelling.
चिरं हुताशवच्छुष्कपर्णान्येवाथ भक्षयन् ।
पर्णाद इति नामासौ प्राप मध्ये तपस्विनाम् ॥ १६ ॥

Then, by consuming only dry leaves for a long time, like fire, he obtained the name "Parṇāda" (the leaf-eater) among the ascetics (tapasvin).

From that time onwards, this royal sage (rājarṣi), named Parṇāda, the most excellent of royal sages (ṛṣi), became renowned throughout Jambudvipa (India) and in the abodes of sages.

Then, through a thousand years of severe ascetic discipline (tapas) and by the power of his spiritual practice, he attained knowledge born from the clarity and grace of his inner self (ātman).
बभूव विगतद्वन्द्वो निराशः शान्तमानसः ।
नीरागो निरनुक्रोशो जीवन्मुक्तः प्रबुद्धधीः ॥ १९ ॥

He became free from dualities, devoid of craving, tranquil in mind, liberated from all attachments, untouched by sorrow, a person liberated while living (jīvanmukta), and possessed of an awakened intellect.
विजहार यथाकामं त्रिलोकीमठिकामिमाम् ।
सिद्धसाध्यैः समं साधो सहंसालिरिवाज्जिनीम् ॥ २० ॥

O holy one, he roamed at will throughout this entire world, which was like a monastery encompassing the three worlds, accompanied by perfected beings (Siddhas) and celestial singers (Sādhyas), just as a swan with its flock sports in a lotus pond.
एकदा तस्य सदनं हेमचूडमहीपतेः ।

One day, he reached the dwelling of King Hemacūḍa - a structure adorned with jewels, like another peak of Mount Meru.

There, those two old friends, who were now perfected, having fully understood all that needed to be known, and had emerged from the realm of ignorance, performed mutual honor.

Oh, what a wonder! Indeed, my purifying and auspicious actions have borne fruit, for I have attained you! Thus, they spoke to each other.

Those two, with their bodies embraced and their forms delighting each other, sat down on a single seat, just like the moon and sun might rest on a mountain.

Parigha said: 'Upon seeing you, my consciousness (cetas) has attained supreme bliss. My mind (manas), like the risen moon's disc, has achieved coolness.'

27.
O virtuous one (sādho)! Repeatedly remembering those confidential conversations, those pastimes, and that particular activity from the past, I rejoice again and again.

O sinless one (anagha)! This knowledge (jñānam) has been obtained by me, and it is known by you in the same way, having arisen from the grace of Māṇḍavya, which itself stems from the grace of the Supreme Self (paramātman).

Are you indeed free from sorrow today? And have you perhaps found rest in the supreme cause, just as a sovereign of the earth rests on Mount Meru?

I hope that this body of yours, like a creeper, is free from mental anguish (ādhi) and physical ailments (vyādhi). Does it bear fruit for the sake of merit (puṇya), as prescribed for this life and the next?

I hope that your mind (manas) remains unattached (sa-virāgam) towards sense objects (viṣaya), which are like serpents, alluring at first sight but ultimately extreme enemies.

My friend, there do not exist in the world any states of happiness and sorrow that are not experienced by living beings, whether they arise from union or from separation.

भूयो वयमपि श्लिष्टाश्चित्रो हि नियतेर्विधिः ॥ ४२ ॥

Similarly, after having experienced such extremely long periods of separation, we are united again. Indeed, the course of destiny (niyati) is wondrous.
सुरघुरुवाच ।
भगवन्नियतेरस्या गतिं सर्पगतेरिव ।
दैविक्याः को हि जानाति गम्भीरां विस्मयप्रदाम् ॥ ४३ ॥

Suraguru said: "O Lord, who indeed can comprehend the profound and astonishing course of this divine destiny (niyati), which is as elusive as the movement of a snake?"

Having overcome the notion of being separated and in distant circumstances, you and I are reunited again today. Oh, what is impossible for fate's (vidhi) decree?
वयं त्वद्य महासत्त्व भृशं कुशलिनः स्थिताः ।
त्वदागमनपुण्येन परां पावनतां गताः ॥ ४५ ॥

But we, O great being, are exceptionally well today. Through the auspicious merit (puṇya) of your arrival, we have achieved supreme purification.
सर्वाः संपत्तयोऽस्माकं राजर्षे संस्थिताः पुरे ।
भवदागमनेनाद्य प्रयाताः शतशाखताम् ॥ ४७ ॥

O royal sage, all our prosperity was contained within this city. With your arrival today, it has now branched out in a hundred directions, becoming manifold.
विकिरति परितो रसायनानामिव निकरं मधुरं महानुभाव ।
तव वचनमवेक्षणं च पुण्यं परमपदप्रतिमो हि साधुसङ्गः ॥ ४८ ॥

vikirati parito rasāyanānāmiva nikaraṃ madhuraṃ mahānubhāva ,

48.
O venerable one, your sweet words and your very gaze scatter around a profusion of elixirs, as it were. Indeed, the company of good people is comparable to the highest spiritual state (paramapada), conferring great merit (puṇya).
