तद्गेहं स्फाटिकं सौधमुच्चैरारुरुहुः क्षणात् ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, at that time, those demons, the followers of Bali, instantly ascended to the top of that crystal palace, their abode.
डिम्भाद्या मन्त्रिणो धीराः सामन्ताः कुमुदादयः ।
सुराद्याश्चैव राजानो वृत्ताद्या बलहारिणः ॥ २ ॥
ḍimbhādyā mantriṇo dhīrāḥ sāmantāḥ kumudādayaḥ ,
surādyāścaiva rājāno vṛttādyā balahāriṇaḥ 2
2. ḍimbha-ādyāḥ mantriṇaḥ dhīrāḥ sāmantāḥ kumuda-ādayaḥ
sura-ādyāḥ ca eva rājānaḥ vṛtta-ādyāḥ balahāriṇaḥ
2. ḍimbha-ādyāḥ mantriṇaḥ,
dhīrāḥ sāmantāḥ kumuda-ādayaḥ,
ca eva sura-ādyāḥ rājānaḥ,

2. Ministers such as Dimbha and others, along with resolute feudatory chiefs like Kumuda and others, as well as kings such as Sura and others, and powerful warriors like Vṛtta and others [were present].
हयग्रीवादयः सैन्याश्चाक्राजाद्याश्च बान्धवाः ।
लडुकाद्याश्च सुहृदो वलूकाद्याश्च लालकाः ॥ ३ ॥
hayagrīvādayaḥ sainyāścākrājādyāśca bāndhavāḥ ,
laḍukādyāśca suhṛdo valūkādyāśca lālakāḥ 3
3. hayagrīva-ādayaḥ ca sainyāḥ ca ākrarāja-ādyāḥ ca bāndhavāḥ
laḍuka-ādyāḥ ca suhṛdaḥ ca valūka-ādyāḥ ca lālakāḥ
3. hayagrīva-ādayaḥ ca sainyāḥ,

3. Military commanders such as Hayagrīva and others, along with relatives like Ākrarāja and others, friends such as Laḍuka and others, and guardians like Valūka and others [were also present].
कुबेरयमशक्राद्या उपायनकराः सुराः ।
यक्षविद्याधरा नागाः सेवावसरकाङ्क्षिणः ॥ ४ ॥
kuberayamaśakrādyā upāyanakarāḥ surāḥ ,
yakṣavidyādharā nāgāḥ sevāvasarakāṅkṣiṇaḥ 4
4. kubera-yama-śakra-ādyāḥ upāyana-karāḥ surāḥ
yakṣa-vidyādharāḥ nāgāḥ sevā-avasara-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ
4. kubera-yama-śakra-ādyāḥ upāyana-karāḥ surāḥ,
yakṣa-vidyādharāḥ nāgāḥ ca sevā-avasara-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ
4. Gods like Kubera, Yama, and Śakra, bearing gifts, as well as Yakṣas, Vidyādharas, and Nāgas, all desiring an opportunity for service, [were also there].
रम्भातिलोत्तमाद्याश्च चामरिण्यो वराङ्गनाः ।
सागराः सरितः शैला दिशश्च विदिशस्तथा ॥ ५ ॥
rambhātilottamādyāśca cāmariṇyo varāṅganāḥ ,
sāgarāḥ saritaḥ śailā diśaśca vidiśastathā 5
5. rambhā tilottamā ādyāḥ ca cāmariṇyaḥ varāṅganāḥ
sāgarāḥ saritaḥ śailāḥ diśaḥ ca vidiśaḥ tathā
5. rambhā tilottamā ādyāḥ ca cāmariṇyaḥ varāṅganāḥ
sāgarāḥ saritaḥ śailāḥ diśaḥ ca vidiśaḥ tathā
5. Rambha, Tilottama, and other chief celestial maidens (varāṅganāḥ) holding whisks (cāmariṇyaḥ), as well as the oceans, rivers, mountains, and the main and intermediate directions (diśas ca vidiśas) -
सेवार्थमाययुस्तस्य तं प्रदेशं तदा बलेः ।
अन्ये च बहवः सिद्धास्त्रेलोक्योदरवासिनः ॥ ६ ॥
sevārthamāyayustasya taṃ pradeśaṃ tadā baleḥ ,
anye ca bahavaḥ siddhāstrelokyodaravāsinaḥ 6
6. sevārtham āyayuḥ tasya tam pradeśam tadā baleḥ
anye ca bahavaḥ siddhāḥ trailokya-udara-vāsinaḥ
6. tadā anye ca bahavaḥ trailokya-udara-vāsinaḥ
siddhāḥ tasya baleḥ sevārtham tam pradeśam āyayuḥ
6. Then, for his service, others came to that region of Bali, including many perfected beings (siddhas) who dwell within the three worlds.
ध्यानमौनसमाधिस्थं चित्रार्पितमिवाचलम् ।
नमत्किरीटावलयो ददृशुर्बलिमादृताः ॥ ७ ॥
dhyānamaunasamādhisthaṃ citrārpitamivācalam ,
namatkirīṭāvalayo dadṛśurbalimādṛtāḥ 7
7. dhyāna-mauna-samādhistham citra-arpitam iva
acalam namat-kirīṭa-avalayaḥ dadṛśuḥ balim ādṛtāḥ
7. namat-kirīṭa-avalayaḥ ādṛtāḥ te dhyāna-mauna-samādhistham
citra-arpitam iva acalam balim dadṛśuḥ
7. With their rows of bowing crowns, they respectfully saw Bali, motionless as if painted in a picture, absorbed in meditation (dhyāna), silence, and deep concentration (samādhi).
तं दृष्ट्वा कृतकर्तव्यप्रणामास्ते महासुराः ।
विषादविस्मयानन्दभयमन्थरतां ययुः ॥ ८ ॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā kṛtakartavyapraṇāmāste mahāsurāḥ ,
viṣādavismayānandabhayamantharatāṃ yayuḥ 8
8. tam dṛṣṭvā kṛta-kartavya-praṇāmāḥ te mahāsurāḥ
viṣāda-vismaya-ānanda-bhaya-mantharatām yayuḥ
8. tam dṛṣṭvā kṛta-kartavya-praṇāmāḥ te mahāsurāḥ
viṣāda-vismaya-ānanda-bhaya-mantharatām yayuḥ
8. Having seen him and performed their customary prostrations, those great demons (mahāsuras) fell into a state of hesitation, mixed with dejection, astonishment, joy, and fear.
मन्त्रिणः प्रविचार्यात्र किं प्राप्तमिति दानवाः ।
भार्गवं चिन्तयामासुर्गुरुं सर्वविदांवरम् ॥ ९ ॥
mantriṇaḥ pravicāryātra kiṃ prāptamiti dānavāḥ ,
bhārgavaṃ cintayāmāsurguruṃ sarvavidāṃvaram 9
9. mantriṇaḥ pravicārya atra kim prāptam iti dānavāḥ
bhārgavaṃ cintayāmāsuḥ guruṃ sarvavidāmvaram
9. dānavāḥ mantriṇaḥ atra kim prāptam iti pravicārya
sarvavidāmvaram guruṃ bhārgavaṃ cintayāmāsuḥ
9. The Dānavas, after deliberating what should be done in this situation, remembered Bhārgava, their preceptor (guru), who was the foremost among all the wise.
चिन्तनानन्तरं दैत्या भार्गवं भास्वरं वपुः ।
ददृशुः कल्पितं प्राप्तं गन्धर्वनगरं यथा ॥ १० ॥
cintanānantaraṃ daityā bhārgavaṃ bhāsvaraṃ vapuḥ ,
dadṛśuḥ kalpitaṃ prāptaṃ gandharvanagaraṃ yathā 10
10. cintanānantaram daityā bhārgavaṃ bhāsvaraṃ vapuḥ
dadṛśuḥ kalpitam prāptam gandharvanagaram yathā
10. cintanānantaram daityā bhāsvaraṃ vapuḥ kalpitam
prāptam gandharvanagaram yathā bhārgavaṃ dadṛśuḥ
10. After this contemplation, the Daityas saw Bhārgava appear with a radiant form, much like an illusory city of the Gandharvas that suddenly becomes visible.
पूज्यमानोऽसुरगणैर्निविष्टो गुरुविष्टरे ।
ददर्श ध्यानमौनस्थं भार्गवो दानवेश्वरम् ॥ ११ ॥
pūjyamāno'suragaṇairniviṣṭo guruviṣṭare ,
dadarśa dhyānamaunasthaṃ bhārgavo dānaveśvaram 11
11. pūjyamānaḥ asuragaṇaiḥ niviṣṭaḥ guruvistare
dadarśa dhyānamounastham bhārgavaḥ dānaveśvaram
11. asuragaṇaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ guruvistare niviṣṭaḥ
bhārgavaḥ dhyānamounastham dānaveśvaram dadarśa
11. Seated on the preceptor's (guru) throne, Bhārgava, who was being worshipped by the throngs of Asuras, saw the lord of the Dānavas, Bali, absorbed in silent meditation (dhyāna).
विश्रम्य स क्षणमिव प्रेमवानवलोक्य च ।
बलिं विचारयन्दृष्ट्वा परिक्षीणभवभ्रमम् ॥ १२ ॥
viśramya sa kṣaṇamiva premavānavalokya ca ,
baliṃ vicārayandṛṣṭvā parikṣīṇabhavabhramam 12
12. viśramya sa kṣaṇam iva premavān avalokya ca
balim vicārayan dṛṣṭvā parikṣīṇabhavabhramam
12. sa kṣaṇam iva viśramya ca premavān balim
avalokya parikṣīṇabhavabhramam dṛṣṭvā vicārayan
12. After resting for a moment and affectionately observing Bali, Bhārgava, upon seeing that Bali's delusion (māyā) of worldly existence (saṃsāra) was completely diminished, began to reflect.
देहरश्मिशतैर्दत्तदीप्तिभिः क्षीरसागरम् ।
क्षिपन्निव सभामाह हसन्वाक्यमिदं गुरुः ॥ १३ ॥
deharaśmiśatairdattadīptibhiḥ kṣīrasāgaram ,
kṣipanniva sabhāmāha hasanvākyamidaṃ guruḥ 13
13. deharaśmiśataiḥ dattadīptibhiḥ kṣīrasāgaram
kṣipan iva sabhām āha hasan vākyam idam guruḥ
13. guruḥ deharaśmiśataiḥ dattadīptibhiḥ kṣīrasāgaram
kṣipan iva hasan idam vākyam sabhām āha
13. The preceptor, as if churning the ocean of milk with the hundreds of radiating rays emanating from his body, smiled and addressed this statement to the assembly.
अतिमात्रमिदं दैत्याः स्वविचारणयैव यत् ।
संप्राप्तविमलावासः सिद्धोऽयं भगवान्बलिः ॥ १४ ॥
atimātramidaṃ daityāḥ svavicāraṇayaiva yat ,
saṃprāptavimalāvāsaḥ siddho'yaṃ bhagavānbaliḥ 14
14. atimātram idam daityāḥ svavicāraṇayā eva yat
samprāptavimalāvāsaḥ siddhaḥ ayam bhagavān baliḥ
14. daityāḥ idam atimātram (asti) yat,
ayam bhagavān baliḥ svavicāraṇayā eva samprāptavimalāvāsaḥ siddhaḥ (asti)
14. O Daityas, this is indeed remarkable: that this venerable Bali, purely through his own introspection, has become a perfected being (siddha) who has attained a pure abode.
अयं तदेवमेवेह तिष्ठन्दानवसत्तमाः ।
स्वात्मनि स्थितिमाप्नोतु पदं पश्यत्वनामयम् ॥ १५ ॥
ayaṃ tadevameveha tiṣṭhandānavasattamāḥ ,
svātmani sthitimāpnotu padaṃ paśyatvanāmayam 15
15. ayam tat evam eva iha tiṣṭhan dānavasattamāḥ
sva ātmani sthitim āpnotu padam paśyatu anāmayam
15. dānavasattamāḥ,
ayam iha tat evam eva tiṣṭhan svātmani sthitim āpnotu,
anāmayam padam paśyatu
15. O best of Dānavas, let him (Bali), remaining precisely as he is here, attain a steady state in his own inner being (ātman), and let him perceive the unblemished state.
श्रान्तो विश्राममायातः क्षीणचित्तभवभ्रमः ।
शान्तसंसारनीहारो वाचनीयो न दानवाः ॥ १६ ॥
śrānto viśrāmamāyātaḥ kṣīṇacittabhavabhramaḥ ,
śāntasaṃsāranīhāro vācanīyo na dānavāḥ 16
16. śrāntaḥ viśrāmam āyātaḥ kṣīṇacittabhavabhramaḥ
śāntasaṃsāranīhāraḥ vācanīyaḥ na dānavāḥ
16. dānavāḥ,
śrāntaḥ (yaḥ),
viśrāmam āyātaḥ,
kṣīṇacittabhavabhramaḥ,
śāntasaṃsāranīhāraḥ (saḥ) na vācanīyaḥ
16. O Dānavas, he who is weary, who has attained rest, whose mental illusion regarding existence is dissipated, and whose mist of transmigration (saṃsāra) has settled - such a one should not be admonished.
स्व एवालोक एतेन संप्राप्तोऽज्ञानसंकटे ।
शान्तेऽत्र संभ्रमे सौरो दिनेनेव करोत्करः ॥ १७ ॥
sva evāloka etena saṃprāpto'jñānasaṃkaṭe ,
śānte'tra saṃbhrame sauro dineneva karotkaraḥ 17
17. svaḥ eva ālokaḥ etena samprāptaḥ ajñānasaṅkaṭe
śānte atra sambhrame sauraḥ dinena iva karotkaraḥ
17. etena ajñānasaṅkaṭe api svaḥ ālokaḥ samprāptaḥ eva
atra sambhrame śānte dinena iva sauraḥ karotkaraḥ
17. Through this, one's own light is attained even amidst the crisis of ignorance. When the confusion here subsides, it is like the sun's rays appearing at dawn.
स्वयमेव हि कालेन प्रबोधमयमेष्यति ।
बीजकोशात्स्वसंवित्त्या सुप्तमूर्तिरिवांकुरः ॥ १८ ॥
svayameva hi kālena prabodhamayameṣyati ,
bījakośātsvasaṃvittyā suptamūrtirivāṃkuraḥ 18
18. svayam eva hi kālena prabodham eṣyati
bījakkośāt svasaṃvittyā suptamūrtiḥ iva aṅkuraḥ
18. hi svayam eva kālena prabodham eṣyati
bījakkośāt svasaṃvittyā suptamūrtiḥ aṅkuraḥ iva
18. Indeed, it will awaken by itself in due course, just as a sprout, by its own intrinsic awareness (svasaṃvitti), emerges from a seed-pod, even though its form was dormant.
कुरुध्वं स्वामिकार्याणि सर्वे दानवनायकाः ।
बलिर्वर्षसहस्रेण समाधेर्बोधमेष्यति ॥ १९ ॥
kurudhvaṃ svāmikāryāṇi sarve dānavanāyakāḥ ,
balirvarṣasahasreṇa samādherbodhameṣyati 19
19. kurudhvam svāmikāryāṇi sarve dānavanāyakāḥ
baliḥ varṣasahastreṇa samādheḥ bodham eṣyati
19. sarve dānavanāyakāḥ svāmikāryāṇi kurudhvam
baliḥ varṣasahastreṇa samādheḥ bodham eṣyati
19. All you demon chiefs, perform your master's duties. Bali will attain awakening from his deep meditation (samādhi) in a thousand years.
इत्युक्ता गुरुणा तत्र हर्षामर्षविषादजाम् ।
दैत्याश्चिन्तां जहुः शुष्कां मञ्जरीमिव पादपाः ॥ २० ॥
ityuktā guruṇā tatra harṣāmarṣaviṣādajām ,
daityāścintāṃ jahuḥ śuṣkāṃ mañjarīmiva pādapāḥ 20
20. iti uktā guruṇā tatra harṣāmarṣaviṣādajām
daityāḥ cintām jahuḥ śuṣkām mañjarīm iva pādapāḥ
20. tatra guruṇā iti uktā (sati) daityāḥ harṣāmarṣaviṣādajām
cintām jahuḥ pādapāḥ śuṣkām mañjarīm iva (jahati)
20. Having thus been addressed by the guru (guru) there, the demons cast off their worry – which was born of joy, anger, and sorrow – just as trees shed dry blossoms.
वैरोचनिसभासंस्थां विधाय प्राग्व्यवस्थया ।
स्वव्यापारपरास्तस्थुः सर्वं एवासुरास्ततः ॥ २१ ॥
vairocanisabhāsaṃsthāṃ vidhāya prāgvyavasthayā ,
svavyāpāraparāstasthuḥ sarvaṃ evāsurāstataḥ 21
21. vairocanisabhāsaṃsthām vidhāya prāgvyavasthayā
svavyāpāraparāḥ tasthuḥ sarve eva asurāḥ tataḥ
21. tataḥ prāgvyavasthayā vairocanisabhāsaṃsthām
vidhāya sarve eva asurāḥ svavyāpāraparāḥ tasthuḥ
21. Having established the assembly of Bali, the son of Virocana, according to the prior arrangement, all the asuras then remained engaged in their respective activities.
नरा मही महिपतयो रसातलं ग्रहा नभस्त्रिदशगणास्त्रिविष्टपम् ।
दिशोऽद्रयो दिक्पतयश्च कंदरान्वनेचरा गगनचराश्च खं ययुः ॥ २२ ॥
narā mahī mahipatayo rasātalaṃ grahā nabhastridaśagaṇāstriviṣṭapam ,
diśo'drayo dikpatayaśca kaṃdarānvanecarā gaganacarāśca khaṃ yayuḥ 22
22. narāḥ mahīm mahīpatayaḥ rasātalam
grahāḥ nabhaḥ tridaśagaṇāḥ triviṣṭapam
diśaḥ adrayaḥ dikpatayaḥ ca kandarān
vanecharāḥ gaganacarāḥ ca kham yayuḥ
22. narāḥ mahīm yayuḥ.
mahīpatayaḥ rasātalam yayuḥ.
grahāḥ nabhaḥ yayuḥ.
tridaśagaṇāḥ triviṣṭapam yayuḥ.
diśaḥ adrayaḥ [svasthānam] yayuḥ.
dikpatayaḥ ca kandarān yayuḥ.
vanecharāḥ gaganacarāḥ ca kham yayuḥ.
22. Men went to the earth, kings to the nether regions, planets to the sky, and the hosts of gods to heaven. The directions and mountains remained in their places, and the guardians of directions went to the caves. Forest dwellers and sky-dwellers went to the sky.
