रामः पुष्पाञ्जलिव्रातैर्विकीर्णः पुरवासिभिः ।
प्रविवेश गृहं श्रीमाञ्जयन्तो विष्टपं यथा ॥ १ ॥

rāmaḥ puṣpāñjalivrātairvikīrṇaḥ puravāsibhiḥ ,
praviveśa gṛhaṃ śrīmāñjayanto viṣṭapaṃ yathā 1
1. śrīvālmīkiḥ uvāca rāmaḥ puṣpāñjalivrātaiḥ vikīrṇaḥ
puravāsibhiḥ praviveśa gṛham śrīmān jayantaḥ viṣṭapam yathā
1. Śrī Vālmīki said: Rama, glorious (śrīmān) and showered with multitudes of flower-offerings by the city dwellers, entered his home, just as Jayanta enters his realm (viṣṭapa).
प्रणनामाथ पितरं वसिष्ठं भ्रातृबान्धवान् ।
ब्राह्मणान्कुलवृद्धांश्च राघवः प्रथमागतः ॥ २ ॥
praṇanāmātha pitaraṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ bhrātṛbāndhavān ,
brāhmaṇānkulavṛddhāṃśca rāghavaḥ prathamāgataḥ 2
2. praṇanāma atha pitaram vasiṣṭham bhrātṛbāndhavān
brāhmaṇān kulavṛddhān ca rāghavaḥ prathamāgataḥ
2. Then Rāghava, who had arrived first, bowed down to his father, to Vasiṣṭha, to his brothers and relatives, and to the Brahmins and the elders of the family.
सुहृद्भिर्भ्रातृभिश्चैव पित्रा द्विजगणेन च ।
मुहुरालिङ्गिताचारो राघवो न ममौ मुदा ॥ ३ ॥
suhṛdbhirbhrātṛbhiścaiva pitrā dvijagaṇena ca ,
muhurāliṅgitācāro rāghavo na mamau mudā 3
3. suhṛdbhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ ca eva pitrā dvijagaṇena
ca muhuḥ āliṅgitācāraḥ rāghavaḥ na mamau mudā
3. Rāghava, who was repeatedly embraced by his friends, brothers, father, and the assembly of Brahmins, was overflowing with joy.
तस्मिन्गृहे दाशरथेः प्रियप्रकथनैर्मिथः ।
जुघूर्णुर्मधुरैराशा मृदुवंशस्तनैरिव ॥ ४ ॥
tasmingṛhe dāśaratheḥ priyaprakathanairmithaḥ ,
jughūrṇurmadhurairāśā mṛduvaṃśastanairiva 4
4. tasmin gṛhe dāśaratheḥ priyaprakathanaiḥ mithaḥ
jujūrṇuḥ madhuraiḥ āśāḥ mṛduvaṃśastanaiḥ iva
4. In that house of Daśaratha's son (Rāma), the surroundings resounded with mutually pleasing conversations, as if with the sweet, soft notes of a flute.
बभूवाथ दिनान्यष्टौ रामागमन उत्सवः ।
सुखं मत्तजनोन्मुक्तकलकोलाहलाकुलः ॥ ५ ॥
babhūvātha dinānyaṣṭau rāmāgamana utsavaḥ ,
sukhaṃ mattajanonmuktakalakolāhalākulaḥ 5
5. babhūva atha dināni aṣṭau rāmāgamana utsavaḥ
sukham mattajanonmuktakalakolāhalākulaḥ
5. Then for eight days, there was a joyous festival upon Rāma's arrival, filled with the pleasing, sweet clamor uttered by exhilarated people.
उवास स सुखं गेहे ततः प्रभृति राघवः ।
वर्णयन्विविधाकारान्देशाचारानितस्ततः ॥ ६ ॥
uvāsa sa sukhaṃ gehe tataḥ prabhṛti rāghavaḥ ,
varṇayanvividhākārāndeśācārānitastataḥ 6
6. uvāsa sa sukhaṃ gehe tataḥ prabhṛti rāghavaḥ
varṇayan vividhākārān deśācārān itastataḥ
6. From then on, Rāghava (Rāma) lived happily in the house, recounting diverse local customs from various places.
प्रातरुत्थाय रामोऽसौ कृत्वा संध्यां यथाविधि ।
सभासंस्थं ददर्शेन्द्रसमं स्वपितरं तथा ॥ ७ ॥
prātarutthāya rāmo'sau kṛtvā saṃdhyāṃ yathāvidhi ,
sabhāsaṃsthaṃ dadarśendrasamaṃ svapitaraṃ tathā 7
7. prātaḥ utthāya rāmaḥ asau kṛtvā saṃdhyām yathāvidhi
sabhāsaṃstham dadarśa indrasamam svapitaram tathā
7. That Rāma, having risen in the morning and performed his morning ritual (saṃdhyā) according to the prescribed method, then saw his father, who was seated in the assembly and was comparable to Indra.
कथाभिः सुविचित्राभिः स वसिष्ठादिभिः सह ।
स्थित्वा दिनचतुर्भागं ज्ञानगर्भाभिरादृतः ॥ ८ ॥
kathābhiḥ suvicitrābhiḥ sa vasiṣṭhādibhiḥ saha ,
sthitvā dinacaturbhāgaṃ jñānagarbhābhirādṛtaḥ 8
8. kathābhiḥ suvicitrābhiḥ sa vasiṣṭha ādibhiḥ saha
sthitvā dinacaturbhāgam jñānagarbhābhiḥ ādṛtaḥ
8. He, esteemed, spent a quarter of the day with Vasiṣṭha and others, engaging in very diverse stories filled with wisdom (jñāna).
जगाम पित्रानुज्ञातो महत्या सेनयावृतः ।
वराहमहिषाकीर्णं वनमाखेटकेच्छया ॥ ९ ॥
jagāma pitrānujñāto mahatyā senayāvṛtaḥ ,
varāhamahiṣākīrṇaṃ vanamākheṭakecchayā 9
9. jagāma pitrā anujñātaḥ mahatyā senayā āvṛtaḥ
varāhamahiṣa ākīrṇam vanam ākheṭaka icchayā
9. Permitted by his father, he went, surrounded by a large army, to the forest teeming with wild boars and buffaloes, with the intention of hunting.
तत आगत्य सदने कृत्वा स्नानादिकं क्रमम् ।
समित्रबान्धवो भुक्त्वा निनाय ससुहृन्निशाम् ॥ १० ॥
tata āgatya sadane kṛtvā snānādikaṃ kramam ,
samitrabāndhavo bhuktvā nināya sasuhṛnniśām 10
10. tataḥ āgatya sadane kṛtvā snānādikam kramam
samitrabāndhavaḥ bhuktvā nināya sasuhṛt niśām
10. Then, having returned home, he performed his bathing and other rituals. After eating, he spent the night with his friends and relatives.
एवंप्रायदिनाचारो भ्रातृभ्यां सह राघवः ।
आगत्य तीर्थयात्रायाः समुवास पितुर्गृहे ॥ ११ ॥
evaṃprāyadinācāro bhrātṛbhyāṃ saha rāghavaḥ ,
āgatya tīrthayātrāyāḥ samuvāsa piturgṛhe 11
11. evaṃprāyadinācāraḥ bhrātṛbhyām saha rāghavaḥ
āgatya tīrthayātrāyāḥ samuvāsa pituḥ gṛhe
11. Rama, maintaining such a daily routine, returned from his pilgrimage with his two brothers and resided in his father's house.
नृपतिसंव्यवहारमनोज्ञया सुजनचेतसि चन्द्रिकयानया ।
परिनिनाय दिनानि स चेष्टया स्तुतसुधारसपेशलयाऽनघ ॥ १२ ॥
nṛpatisaṃvyavahāramanojñayā sujanacetasi candrikayānayā ,
parinināya dināni sa ceṣṭayā stutasudhārasapeśalayā'nagha 12
12. nṛpatisaṃvyavahāramanojñayā sujanacetasi candrikayā anayā
parinināya dināni saḥ ceṣṭayā stutasudhārasapeśalayā anagha
12. O sinless one (anagha), he spent his days with actions that were charming in his dealings with kings, like this moonlight in the hearts of noble people, and as delicate as praised nectar.
