Thirteenth chapter. Lord Rama said: O sage, this prosperity (śrī), which is abundantly present in this cycle of existence (saṃsāra) and is designed for profound delusion, that very (prosperity) certainly leads to wretchedness.

Just like a river in the rainy season, [the mind or saṃsāra] carries along the vast, inert [beings or states of mind] that are greatly agitated by the fiery, endless waves of abundant excitement.

Just as waves arise from a river, so too do many restless daughters of worry (cintā), nurtured by abundant mischievousness, emerge from this (mind/state).

Indeed, this unfortunate one (mind/worry) does not keep her foot (position) fixed in one place. Like one who is burned, she roams hither and thither with unrestrained conduct.

Though generating supreme distress and being engaged with, it nonetheless holds only destruction internally, just as a lamp's flame produces soot.

Indeed, a foolish and obstinate person, without any consideration of good or bad qualities, clings to an associate, just like a royal disposition (prakṛti).

This (tendency or situation) grows and spreads through each such action (karma), just as milk enhances the virulence of the fault-serpent's venom.

People remain gentle and soft-spoken towards both strangers and their own kin only as long as they have not been made harsh by prosperity (śriyā), just as snow is (not hardened) by a fierce wind.

Those who are wise, brave, grateful, skillful, and gentle - they are corrupted by prosperity (śriyā), just like jewels by a handful of dust.

10.
O Lord, prosperity does not truly bring happiness; it indeed only increases suffering. Even when carefully guarded, it leads to ruin and death, just like a poisonous vine.

Rare indeed are these three types of individuals: one who is prosperous and irreproachable, one who is brave and not boastful, and one who has equal vision (samadṛṣṭi) and is a master.

Indeed, this is a formidable and impenetrable cavern for those who endure suffering. It is like the vast, perilous slopes of the Vindhya mountain range for mighty elephants blinded by dense delusion.

This (situation/state) is like the night that closes the lotus of good deeds, and the moonlight that makes the water-lily of suffering bloom. It is a whirlwind for the lamp of right insight, and a river teeming with surging waves.

It is a path that begins with bewildering clouds, enhancing the poison of dejection. It is a small field for doubts and misconceptions, experiencing fear that leads to distress.

It is like frost to the creepers of dispassion (vairāgya), a night for the owls of delusion. It is the fangs of Rāhu for the moon of discrimination, and like moonlight for the lotuses of kindness (causing them to close).

Wealth (lakṣmī) is alluring, difficult to attain through improper means, momentary, and fragile. It is like a flower creeper emerging from a pit, its body entwined with a multitude of snakes, captivating the mind's inclinations.
