राजोवाच ।
अस्ति तावदयं देशो नानावननदीयुतः ।
वसुधामण्डलस्यास्य सहोदर इवानुजः ॥ १ ॥

asti tāvadayaṃ deśo nānāvananadīyutaḥ ,
vasudhāmaṇḍalasyāsya sahodara ivānujaḥ 1
1. rājā uvāca asti tāvat ayam deśaḥ nānāvananadīyutaḥ
vasudhāmaṇḍalasya asya sahodaraḥ iva anujaḥ
1. rājā uvāca.
asti tāvat ayam deśaḥ,
nānāvananadīyutaḥ,
asya vasudhāmaṇḍalasya sahodaraḥ anujaḥ iva.
1. The king said: "There is indeed this region, abundant with various forests and rivers, which is like a younger brother or a kindred spirit of this whole earthly sphere."
अस्मिंश्चायमहं राजा पौराभिमतवृत्तिमान् ।
इन्द्रः स्वर्ग इवास्यां तु सभायां मध्यसंस्थित ॥ २ ॥
asmiṃścāyamahaṃ rājā paurābhimatavṛttimān ,
indraḥ svarga ivāsyāṃ tu sabhāyāṃ madhyasaṃsthita 2
2. asmin ca ayam aham rājā paurābhimatavṛttimān indraḥ
svarge iva asyām tu sabhāyām madhyasaṃsthitaḥ
2. ca asmin ayam aham rājā paurābhimatavṛttimān asti.
tu asyām sabhāyām aham svarge indraḥ iva madhyasaṃsthitaḥ asti.
2. "And in this land, I am the king, whose conduct is approved by the citizens. I sit in the middle of this assembly, just like Indra in heaven."
यावदभ्यागतो दूरात्कश्चिच्छाम्बरिकस्त्वयम् ।
रसातलादभ्युदितो मायी मय इव स्वयम् ॥ ३ ॥
yāvadabhyāgato dūrātkaścicchāmbarikastvayam ,
rasātalādabhyudito māyī maya iva svayam 3
3. yāvat abhyāgataḥ dūrāt kaścit śāmbarikaḥ tu
ayam rasātalāt abhyuditaḥ māyī maya iva svayam
3. yāvat ayam kaścit śāmbarikaḥ māyī dūrāt abhyāgataḥ
rasātalāt abhyuditaḥ maya iva svayam tu
3. Meanwhile, this very magician (śāmbarika), an illusionist (māyī), arrived from afar, having risen from the netherworld as if Maya (māyā) himself.
अनेन भ्रमिताद्येह पिच्छिका तेजसोर्जिता ।
कल्पान्तपवनाभ्रेण शक्रचापलता यथा ॥ ४ ॥
anena bhramitādyeha picchikā tejasorjitā ,
kalpāntapavanābhreṇa śakracāpalatā yathā 4
4. anena bhramitā adya iha picchikā tejasā ūrjitā
kalpāntapavanābhreṇa śakracāpalatā yathā
4. adya iha anena tejasa ūrjitā iyam picchikā bhramitā (asti)
yathā kalpāntapavanābhreṇa śakracāpalatā (bhramita bhavati)
4. By him, this peacock feather wand, imbued with (his) power, is now being whirled about here, much like the flickering instability of Indra's rainbow (śakracāpalatā) caused by the strong winds and clouds at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpānta).
आलोक्यैतामहं लोलामस्याश्वस्य पुरः स्थितः ।
पृष्ठमारूढवानेक आत्मना भ्रान्तमानसः ॥ ५ ॥
ālokyaitāmahaṃ lolāmasyāśvasya puraḥ sthitaḥ ,
pṛṣṭhamārūḍhavāneka ātmanā bhrāntamānasaḥ 5
5. ālokya etām aham lolām asyāḥ āśvasya puraḥ sthitaḥ
pṛṣṭham ārūḍhavān ekaḥ ātmanā bhrāntamānasaḥ
5. aham bhrāntamānasaḥ asyāḥ lolām etām ālokya āśvasya puraḥ sthitaḥ (abhavam).
tatas ekaḥ ātmanā pṛṣṭham ārūḍhavān (abhavam).
5. Having observed this flickering (wand), I, with my bewildered mind, stood before it, having gained confidence. Then, by myself, I alone mounted its back.
ततोऽद्रिं प्रलयक्षुब्धं पुष्करावर्तको यथा ।
तथा चलन्तं चलितः स्वश्वमारूढवानहम् ॥ ६ ॥
tato'driṃ pralayakṣubdhaṃ puṣkarāvartako yathā ,
tathā calantaṃ calitaḥ svaśvamārūḍhavānaham 6
6. tataḥ adrim pralayakṣubdham puṣkarāvartakaḥ yathā
tathā calantam calitaḥ svaśvam ārūḍhavān aham
6. tataḥ aham calitaḥ tathā (eva)
svam aśvam calantam ārūḍhavān
(abhavam) yathā puṣkarāvartakaḥ
pralayakṣubdham adrim (calayati)
6. Then, having become unsettled myself, I mounted my own horse-like vehicle (svaśvam) as it was moving. It was like a Puṣkarāvartaka cloud (further shaking) a mountain that is already moving and agitated by the cosmic dissolution (pralaya).
गन्तुं प्रवृत्तो मृगयामेकोऽहमतिरंहसा ।
उर्वरामिव निर्भर्तुः कल्लोलः प्रलयाम्बुधेः ॥ ७ ॥
gantuṃ pravṛtto mṛgayāmeko'hamatiraṃhasā ,
urvarāmiva nirbhartuḥ kallolaḥ pralayāmbudheḥ 7
7. gantum pravṛttaḥ mṛgayām ekaḥ aham atiraṃhasā
urvarām iva nirbhartuḥ kallolaḥ pralayām budheḥ
7. aham ekaḥ atiraṃhasā mṛgayām gantum pravṛttaḥ.
pralayām budheḥ kallolaḥ urvarām nirbhartuḥ iva.
7. I, alone, set out for hunting with great speed, just as a colossal wave from the ocean of dissolution (pralaya) might surge forth to engulf fertile land.
तेनानिलविलोलेन दूरं नीतोऽस्मि वाजिना ।
योगाभ्यासजडेनाज्ञो मुग्धस्य मनसा यथा ॥ ८ ॥
tenānilavilolena dūraṃ nīto'smi vājinā ,
yogābhyāsajaḍenājño mugdhasya manasā yathā 8
8. tena anilavilolena dūram nītaḥ asmi vājinā
yogābhyāsajaḍena ajñaḥ mugdhasya manasā yathā
8. tena anilavilolena vājinā aham ajñaḥ dūram nītaḥ asmi,
yathā mugdhasya yogābhyāsajaḍena manasā (puruṣaḥ nīyate).
8. By that wind-agitated horse, I was carried far away, [I] being ignorant, just as one is carried by a bewildered mind of a person that is dull from the practice of yoga (yoga).
अकिंचनमनःशून्यं स्त्रीचित्तमिव निर्भरम् ।
ततः प्रलयनिर्दग्धजगदास्पदभीषणम् ॥ ९ ॥
akiṃcanamanaḥśūnyaṃ strīcittamiva nirbharam ,
tataḥ pralayanirdagdhajagadāspadabhīṣaṇam 9
9. akiṃcanamanaḥśūnyam strīcittam iva nirbharam
tataḥ pralaya-nirdagdha-jagat-āspada-bhīṣaṇam
9. (tat) akiṃcanamanaḥśūnyam strīcittam iva nirbharam (āsīt),
tataḥ pralaya-nirdagdha-jagat-āspada-bhīṣaṇam (āsīt).
9. It was utterly empty, like the mind of one who possesses nothing, or like a woman's mind. Furthermore, it was terrifying, like the abode of the world incinerated during the cosmic dissolution (pralaya).
निष्पक्षिक्षारनीहारं निर्वृक्षमजलं महत् ।
संप्राप्तोऽहमपर्यन्तमरण्यं श्रान्तवाहनः ॥ १० ॥
niṣpakṣikṣāranīhāraṃ nirvṛkṣamajalaṃ mahat ,
saṃprāpto'hamaparyantamaraṇyaṃ śrāntavāhanaḥ 10
10. niṣpakṣikṣāranīhāram nirvṛkṣam ajalam mahat
samprāptaḥ aham aparyantam araṇyam śrāntavāhanaḥ
10. śrāntavāhanaḥ aham niṣpakṣikṣāranīhāram nirvṛkṣam ajalam mahat aparyantam araṇyam samprāptaḥ (asmi).
10. With my mount exhausted (śrāntavāhana), I reached that boundless (aparyanta) wilderness (araṇya), which was devoid of birds, filled with salty mists, treeless, waterless, and vast.
तद्द्वितीयमिवाकाशं तथाष्टममिवाम्बुधिम् ।
पञ्चमं सागरमिव संशुष्कं शून्यकोटरम् ॥ ११ ॥
taddvitīyamivākāśaṃ tathāṣṭamamivāmbudhim ,
pañcamaṃ sāgaramiva saṃśuṣkaṃ śūnyakoṭaram 11
11. tat dvitīyam iva ākāśam tathā aṣṭamam iva ambudhim
pañcamam sāgaram iva saṃśuṣkam śūnya-koṭaram
11. tat dvitīyam iva ākāśam tathā aṣṭamam iva ambudhim
pañcamam sāgaram iva saṃśuṣkam śūnya-koṭaram
11. That place was like a second sky, and an eighth ocean. It was like a fifth ocean, a completely dried-up, empty hollow.
ज्ञस्येव विततं चेतो मूर्खस्येव रुषाऽजवम् ।
अदृष्टजनसंसर्गमजाततृणपल्लवम् ॥ १२ ॥
jñasyeva vitataṃ ceto mūrkhasyeva ruṣā'javam ,
adṛṣṭajanasaṃsargamajātatṛṇapallavam 12
12. jñasya iva vitatam cetaḥ mūrkhasya iva ruṣā
ajavam adṛṣṭa-jana-saṃsargam ajāta-tṛṇa-pallavam
12. jñasya iva vitatam cetaḥ mūrkhasya iva ruṣā
ajavam adṛṣṭa-jana-saṃsargam ajāta-tṛṇa-pallavam
12. It was like the expansive mind of a wise person, and like the mind of a fool, agitated by anger. It was untouched by human contact, where no grass or sprouts had grown.
अरण्यमिदमासाद्य मतिर्मे खेदमागता ।
ललनेवैत्य दारिद्र्यं निरन्नफलबान्धवम् ॥ १३ ॥
araṇyamidamāsādya matirme khedamāgatā ,
lalanevaitya dāridryaṃ nirannaphalabāndhavam 13
13. araṇyam idam āsādya matiḥ me khedam āgatā lalanā
eva etya dāridryam nir-anna-phala-bāndhavam
13. idam araṇyam āsādya me matiḥ khedam āgatā lalanā
eva nir-anna-phala-bāndhavam dāridryam etya
13. Having reached this wilderness, my mind became distressed, like a woman who falls into poverty, deprived of food, fruit, and relatives.
कचन्मरुमरीच्यम्बुपुरःप्लुतककुम्मुखम् ।
आसूर्यास्तं दिनं तत्र प्रक्रान्तं सीदता मया ॥ १४ ॥
kacanmarumarīcyambupuraḥplutakakummukham ,
āsūryāstaṃ dinaṃ tatra prakrāntaṃ sīdatā mayā 14
14. kacat-maru-marīci-ambu-puraḥ-pluta-kakum-mukham
ā-sūrya-astam dinam tatra prakrāntam sīdatā mayā
14. mayā sīdatā tatra kacat-maru-marīci-ambu-puraḥ-pluta-kakum-mukham
ā-sūrya-astam dinam prakrāntam
14. There, where the horizons seemed to gleam, shimmering with mirage-water that appeared to float ahead, I, suffering, spent the day until sunset.
तदरण्यं मयातीतमतिकृच्छ्रेण खेदिना ।
विवेकिनेव संसारो मध्यशून्यतताकृति ॥ १५ ॥
tadaraṇyaṃ mayātītamatikṛcchreṇa khedinā ,
vivekineva saṃsāro madhyaśūnyatatākṛti 15
15. tat araṇyam mayā atītam atikṛcchreṇa khedinā
vivekinā iva saṃsāraḥ madhyaśūnyatākṛti
15. khedinā mayā atikṛcchreṇa tat araṇyam atītam.
vivekinā saṃsāraḥ madhyaśūnyatākṛti iva.
15. I, weary and suffering greatly, passed through that forest. It was like how the cycle of worldly existence (saṃsāra) appears to a discerning person, with its core nature being emptiness.
यदेतेनातिवाह्याहं प्राप्तवाञ्जङ्गलं क्रमात् ।
अस्ताद्रिसानुं खिन्नाश्वः शून्यभ्रान्त्येवभास्करः ॥ १६ ॥
yadetenātivāhyāhaṃ prāptavāñjaṅgalaṃ kramāt ,
astādrisānuṃ khinnāśvaḥ śūnyabhrāntyevabhāskaraḥ 16
16. yat etena ativāhya aham prāptavān jaṅgalam kramāt
astādrisānum khinnāśvaḥ śūnyabhrāntyā iva bhāskaraḥ
16. yat etena ativāhya,
aham khinnāśvaḥ kramāt astādrisānum jaṅgalam prāptavān,
(saḥ prāptavān) śūnyabhrāntyā bhāskaraḥ iva.
16. After passing through that, I, with my horses weary, gradually reached the wilderness, which was like the peak of the setting mountain, as if the sun (bhāskara) itself, with exhausted steeds, arrived there through an empty illusion.
जम्बूकदम्बप्रायेषु कलालापाः पतत्रिणः ।
यत्र स्फुरन्ति खण्डेषु पान्थानामिव बान्धवाः ॥ १७ ॥
jambūkadambaprāyeṣu kalālāpāḥ patatriṇaḥ ,
yatra sphuranti khaṇḍeṣu pānthānāmiva bāndhavāḥ 17
17. jambūkadamba-prāyeṣu kalālāpāḥ patatriṇaḥ yatra
sphuranti khaṇḍeṣu pānthānām iva bāndhavāḥ
17. yatra jambūkadamba-prāyeṣu khaṇḍeṣu kalālāpāḥ patatriṇaḥ sphuranti,
(te) pānthānām bāndhavāḥ iva (dṛśyante).
17. There, in groves predominantly of jambu and kadamba trees, birds with melodious calls flutter, appearing like relatives to weary travelers.
यत्र शष्पशिखाश्रेण्यो दृश्यन्ते विरलाः स्थले ।
कदर्थलक्ष्म्या जिह्मस्य हृदीवानन्दवृत्तयः ॥ १८ ॥
yatra śaṣpaśikhāśreṇyo dṛśyante viralāḥ sthale ,
kadarthalakṣmyā jihmasya hṛdīvānandavṛttayaḥ 18
18. yatra śaṣpaśikhāśreṇyaḥ dṛśyante viralāḥ sthale
kadarthalakṣmyā jihmasya hṛdi iva ānandavṛttayaḥ
18. yatra sthale viralāḥ śaṣpaśikhāśreṇyaḥ dṛśyante,
(tāḥ) kadarthalakṣmyā jihmasya hṛdi ānandavṛttayaḥ iva (dṛśyante).
18. Where sparse rows of grass-blades are seen on the ground, they are like the rare movements of joy in the heart of a wicked person (jihmasya), stemming from their ill-gotten wealth.
पूर्वादरण्यादरसात्तद्धि किंचित्सुखावहम् ।
अत्यन्तदुःखान्मरणाद्वरं व्याधिर्हि जन्तुषु ॥ १९ ॥
pūrvādaraṇyādarasāttaddhi kiṃcitsukhāvaham ,
atyantaduḥkhānmaraṇādvaraṃ vyādhirhi jantuṣu 19
19. pūrvāt araṇyāt arasāt tat hi kiṃcit sukhāvaham
atyantaduḥkhāt maraṇāt varam vyādhiḥ hi jantuṣu
19. hi pūrvāt araṇyāt arasāt tat kiṃcit sukhāvaham
hi jantuṣu atyantaduḥkhāt maraṇāt vyādhiḥ varam
19. Indeed, that experience from the former, desolate forest was somewhat pleasant. For living beings, sickness is surely preferable to extreme suffering and death.
तत्र जम्बीरखण्डस्य तलं संप्राप्तवानहम् ।
मार्कण्डेय इवागेन्द्रमेकार्णवविहारतः ॥ २० ॥
tatra jambīrakhaṇḍasya talaṃ saṃprāptavānaham ,
mārkaṇḍeya ivāgendramekārṇavavihārataḥ 20
20. tatra jambīrakhaṇḍasya talam samprāptavān aham
mārkaṇḍeya iva aga-indram eka-arṇava-vihārataḥ
20. tatra aham jambīrakhaṇḍasya talam samprāptavān
mārkaṇḍeya iva ekārṇavavihārataḥ aga-indram
20. There, I reached the surface of a lemon segment, just as Mārkaṇḍeya, while wandering in the cosmic ocean (ekārṇava), reached the king of mountains (agendra).
आलम्बिता मया तत्र स्कन्धसंसर्गिणी लता ।
नीला जलदमालेव तापतप्तेन भूभृता ॥ २१ ॥
ālambitā mayā tatra skandhasaṃsargiṇī latā ,
nīlā jaladamāleva tāpataptena bhūbhṛtā 21
21. ālambitā mayā tatra skandha-saṃsarginī latā
nīlā jalada-mālā iva tāpa-taptena bhū-bhṛtā
21. tatra mayā skandhasaṃsarginī nīlā latā
ālambitā tāpataptena bhūbhṛtā jaladamālā iva
21. There, I clung to a creeper that was entwined around a tree trunk, just as a blue garland of clouds is embraced by a mountain scorched by distress.
मयि प्रलम्बमानेऽस्यां प्रयातः स तुरङ्गमः ।
गङ्गावलम्बिनि नरे यथा दुष्कृतसंचयः ॥ २२ ॥
mayi pralambamāne'syāṃ prayātaḥ sa turaṅgamaḥ ,
gaṅgāvalambini nare yathā duṣkṛtasaṃcayaḥ 22
22. mayi pralambamāne asyām prayātaḥ saḥ turaṅgamaḥ
gaṅgā-avalambini nare yathā duṣkṛta-saṃcayaḥ
22. yathā gaṅgāvalambini nare duṣkṛtasaṃcayaḥ prayātaḥ
mayi asyām pralambamāne saḥ turaṅgamaḥ prayātaḥ
22. While I was hanging on this (creeper), that horse departed, just as a collection of misdeeds (duṣkṛta) vanishes from a man who clings to the Gaṅgā.
चिरं दीर्घाध्वगः खिन्नस्तत्र विश्रान्तवानहम् ।
भानुरस्ताचलोत्सङ्गे तले कल्पतरोरिव ॥ २३ ॥
ciraṃ dīrghādhvagaḥ khinnastatra viśrāntavānaham ,
bhānurastācalotsaṅge tale kalpataroriva 23
23. ciraṃ dīrghādhvagaḥ khinnaḥ tatra viśrāntavān aham
| bhānuḥ astācalotsaṅge tale kalpataroḥ iva ||
23. aham dīrghādhvagaḥ khinnaḥ ciram tatra viśrāntavān
bhānuḥ astācalotsaṅge kalpataroḥ tale iva
23. I, a weary long-distance traveler, rested there for a long time, just as the sun rests on the lap of the Asta mountain, as if at the base of a wish-fulfilling tree (kalpataru).
यावत्समस्तसंसारव्यवहारभरैः समम् ।
रविर्विश्रमणायेव निविष्टोऽस्ताचलाङ्गणे ॥ २४ ॥
yāvatsamastasaṃsāravyavahārabharaiḥ samam ,
ravirviśramaṇāyeva niviṣṭo'stācalāṅgaṇe 24
24. yāvat samastasaṃsāravyavahārabharaiḥ samam |
raviḥ viśramaṇāya iva niviṣṭaḥ astācalāṅgaṇe ||
24. yāvat samastasaṃsāravyavahārabharaiḥ samam
raviḥ viśramaṇāya iva astācalāṅgaṇe niviṣṭaḥ
24. As the sun settled in the courtyard of the Asta mountain, as if for rest, along with the burdens of all worldly activities (saṃsāra)...
शनैः श्यामिकया ग्रस्ते समस्ते भुवनोदरे ।
रात्रिसंव्यवहारेषु संप्रवृत्तेषु जङ्गले ॥ २५ ॥
śanaiḥ śyāmikayā graste samaste bhuvanodare ,
rātrisaṃvyavahāreṣu saṃpravṛtteṣu jaṅgale 25
25. śanaiḥ śyāmikayā graste samaste bhuvanaudare
| rātrisaṃvyavahāreṣu sampravṛtteṣu jaṅgale ||
25. śanaiḥ śyāmikayā samaste bhuvanaudare graste
jaṅgale rātrisaṃvyavahāreṣu sampravṛtteṣu
25. Slowly, as the entire expanse of the world was enveloped by darkness, and the nocturnal activities commenced in the wilderness.
अहं तरुतृणे तस्मिन्पेलवे खण्डकोटरे ।
निलीनश्चिरलीनास्यः स्वनीडे विहगो यथा ॥ २६ ॥
ahaṃ tarutṛṇe tasminpelave khaṇḍakoṭare ,
nilīnaściralīnāsyaḥ svanīḍe vihago yathā 26
26. aham tarutṛṇe tasmin pelave khaṇḍakoṭare |
nilīnaḥ ciralīnāsyaḥ svanīḍe vihagaḥ yathā ||
26. aham ciralīnāsyaḥ tasmin pelave tarutṛṇe
khaṇḍakoṭare svanīḍe vihagaḥ yathā nilīnaḥ
26. I hid myself there, with my face long concealed, within that soft tree-grass and broken tree hollow, just like a bird in its own nest.
विषदष्टविवेकस्य कीनाशस्य गलत्स्मृतेः ।
विक्रीतस्येव दीनस्य मग्नस्येवान्धकूपके ॥ २७ ॥
viṣadaṣṭavivekasya kīnāśasya galatsmṛteḥ ,
vikrītasyeva dīnasya magnasyevāndhakūpake 27
27. viṣadaṣṭavivekasya kīnāśasya galatsmṛteḥ
vikrītasya iva dīnasya magnasya iva andhakūpake
27. viṣadaṣṭavivekasya galatsmṛteḥ kīnāśasya iva
vikrītasya dīnasya iva andhakūpake magnasya iva
27. Like a pauper (kīnāśa) whose discernment (viveka) is poisoned and whose memory (smṛti) is fading; like a helpless person (dīna) who has been sold into bondage, or one plunged into a dark well.
तत्र कल्पसमा रात्रिर्मोहमग्नस्य मे गता ।
एकार्णवोह्यमानस्य मार्कण्डेयमुनेरिव ॥ २८ ॥
tatra kalpasamā rātrirmohamagnasya me gatā ,
ekārṇavohyamānasya mārkaṇḍeyamuneriva 28
28. tatra kalpasamā rātriḥ mohamagnasya me gatā
ekārṇavohyamānasya mārkaṇḍeyamuneḥ iva
28. mohamagnasya me tatra kalpasamā rātriḥ
ekārṇavohyamānasya mārkaṇḍeyamuneḥ iva gatā
28. There, for me, who was immersed in delusion (moha), the night passed like an aeon (kalpa), just as for the sage Mārkaṇḍeya, who was being carried by the primordial ocean.
न स्नातवान्नार्चितवान्न तदा भुक्तवानहम् ।
केवलं मे गता रात्रिः सापदां धुरि तिष्ठतः ॥ २९ ॥
na snātavānnārcitavānna tadā bhuktavānaham ,
kevalaṃ me gatā rātriḥ sāpadāṃ dhuri tiṣṭhataḥ 29
29. na snātavān na arcitavān na tadā bhuktavān aham
kevalam me gatā rātriḥ sāpadām dhuri tiṣṭhataḥ
29. na snātavān na arcitavān na tadā bhuktavān aham
kevalam sāpadām dhuri tiṣṭhataḥ me rātriḥ gatā
29. I neither bathed nor worshipped, nor did I eat then. The night merely passed for me, who was standing at the forefront of the unfortunate ones.
विनिद्रस्य विधैर्यस्य स्फुरतः सह पल्लवैः ।
समं दुष्टातिदैर्घ्येण सा व्यतीयाय शर्वरी ॥ ३० ॥
vinidrasya vidhairyasya sphurataḥ saha pallavaiḥ ,
samaṃ duṣṭātidairghyeṇa sā vyatīyāya śarvarī 30
30. vinidrasya vidhaiḥ yasya sphurataḥ saha pallavaiḥ
samam duṣṭa atidairghyeṇa sā vyatīyāya śarvarī
30. yasya vinidrasya vidhaiḥ saha pallavaiḥ sphurataḥ
sā śarvarī duṣṭātidairghyeṇa samam vyatīyāya
30. That night (śarvarī) passed for sleepless me, whose body parts were trembling like tender sprouts (pallava), with an evil, excessive length.
ततस्तिमिरलेखासु सह तारेन्दुकैरवैः ।
मयीवापाद्यमानासु म्लानतामलमानने ॥ ३१ ॥
tatastimiralekhāsu saha tārendukairavaiḥ ,
mayīvāpādyamānāsu mlānatāmalamānane 31
31. tatas timira-lekhāsu saha tārā-indu-kairavaiḥ
mayi iva āpādyamānāsu mlānatām alam ānane
31. tatas tārā-indu-kairavaiḥ saha timira-lekhāsu
mayi iva ānane alam mlānatām āpādyamānāsu
31. Then, as streaks of darkness, accompanied by stars, the moon, and night-lotuses, were appearing, a great paleness settled on my face, as if this fading were being imposed upon me.
शाम्यन्तीषु च वेतालक्ष्वेडासु जवजङ्गले ।
सहशीतार्तिमद्दन्तपङ्क्तिटाङ्कारसीत्कतैः ॥ ३२ ॥
śāmyantīṣu ca vetālakṣveḍāsu javajaṅgale ,
sahaśītārtimaddantapaṅktiṭāṅkārasītkataiḥ 32
32. śāmyantīṣu ca vetāla-kṣveḍāsu java-jaṅgale saha
śītārti-mat-danta-paṅkti-ṭāṅkāra-sītkataiḥ
32. ca java-jaṅgale vetāla-kṣveḍāsu śāmyantīṣu
śītārti-mat-danta-paṅkti-ṭāṅkāra-sītkataiḥ saha
32. And, as the shrieks of the vetālas ceased in the dense jungle, along with the clattering and hissing sounds of the teeth of those afflicted by cold.
मामेवार्तिविनिर्मग्नं हसन्तीमिव दृष्टवान् ।
अहं पूर्वां दिशं प्राप्तमधुपानारुणामिव ॥ ३३ ॥
māmevārtivinirmagnaṃ hasantīmiva dṛṣṭavān ,
ahaṃ pūrvāṃ diśaṃ prāptamadhupānāruṇāmiva 33
33. mām eva ārti-vinirmagnam hasantīm iva dṛṣṭavān
aham pūrvām diśam prāpta-madhupāna-aruṇām iva
33. aham ārti-vinirmagnam mām eva dṛṣṭavān ca pūrvām
diśam hasantīm iva prāpta-madhupāna-aruṇām iva
33. I saw myself, deeply immersed in distress. And I saw the eastern direction, as if laughing, and red as if intoxicated from drinking wine.
क्षणादज्ञ इव ज्ञानं दरिद्र इव काञ्चनम् ।
दृष्टवानहमर्कं खे वारणारोहणोन्मुखम् ॥ ३४ ॥
kṣaṇādajña iva jñānaṃ daridra iva kāñcanam ,
dṛṣṭavānahamarkaṃ khe vāraṇārohaṇonmukham 34
34. kṣaṇāt ajñaḥ iva jñānam daridraḥ iva kāñcanam
dṛṣṭavān aham arkam khe vāraṇa-ārohaṇa-unmukham
34. aham kṣaṇāt ajñaḥ iva jñānam daridraḥ iva kāñcanam
(prāptaḥ iva) khe vāraṇa-ārohaṇa-unmukham arkam dṛṣṭavān
34. Instantly, like an ignorant person (finding) knowledge, or a poor person (finding) gold, I saw the sun in the sky, intent on ascending its elephant-vehicle.
उत्थायास्तरणं वस्त्रं तत्तदास्फोटितं मया ।
हस्तिचर्मद्वरेणेव संध्यानृत्यानुरागिणा ॥ ३५ ॥
utthāyāstaraṇaṃ vastraṃ tattadāsphoṭitaṃ mayā ,
hasticarmadvareṇeva saṃdhyānṛtyānurāgiṇā 35
35. utthāya āstaraṇam vastram tat tat āsphoṭitam mayā
hasticharman-dvareṇa iva sandhyā-nṛtya-anurāgiṇā
35. utthāya mayā tat tat āstaraṇam vastram
sandhyā-nṛtya-anurāgiṇā hasticharman-dvareṇa iva āsphoṭitam
35. After rising, I vigorously shook that covering cloth, just like one devoted to the evening dance (sandhyānṛtya) might shake the two pieces of an elephant hide.
प्रवृत्तस्तामहं स्फारां विहर्तुं जङ्गलस्थलीम् ।
कालो जगत्कुटीं कल्पदग्धभूतगणामिव ॥ ३६ ॥
pravṛttastāmahaṃ sphārāṃ vihartuṃ jaṅgalasthalīm ,
kālo jagatkuṭīṃ kalpadagdhabhūtagaṇāmiva 36
36. pravṛttaḥ tām aham sfārām vihartum jaṅgala-sthalīm
kālaḥ jagat-kuṭīm kalpa-dagdha-bhūta-gaṇām iva
36. aham pravṛttaḥ tām sfārām jaṅgala-sthalīm vihartum [gataḥ];
kālaḥ jagat-kuṭīm kalpa-dagdha-bhūta-gaṇām iva [pravartate]
36. I began to wander (vihartum) through that vast jungle area, just as Time (kāla) roams through the world's hut, which resembles a multitude of beings scorched at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa).
न किंचिदृश्यते तत्र भूतं जरठजङ्गले ।
 अभिजातो गुणलवो यथा मूर्खशरीरके ॥ ३७ ॥
na kiṃcidṛśyate tatra bhūtaṃ jaraṭhajaṅgale ,
 abhijāto guṇalavo yathā mūrkhaśarīrake 37
37. na kiñcit dṛśyate tatra bhūtam jaraṭha-jaṅgale
abhijātaḥ guṇa-lavaḥ yathā mūrkha-śarīrake
37. tatra jaraṭha-jaṅgale bhūtam kiñcit na dṛśyate,
yathā mūrkha-śarīrake abhijātaḥ guṇa-lavaḥ [na dṛśyate]
37. In that ancient jungle (jaraṭhajaṅgala), no living being (bhūta) was to be seen, just as no trace of a good quality (guṇalava) is ever manifest in the body of a fool.
केवलं विगताशङ्कं खण्डभ्रमणचञ्चलम् ।
 चीचीकूचीतिवचना विहरन्ति विहङ्गमाः ॥ ३८ ॥
kevalaṃ vigatāśaṅkaṃ khaṇḍabhramaṇacañcalam ,
 cīcīkūcītivacanā viharanti vihaṅgamāḥ 38
38. kevalam vigata-āśaṅkam khaṇḍa-bhramaṇa-cañcalam
cīcīkūcī-iti-vacanāḥ viharanti vihaṅgamāḥ
38. kevalam vihaṅgamāḥ vigata-āśaṅkam
khaṇḍa-bhramaṇa-cañcalam cīcīkūcī-iti-vacanāḥ viharanti
38. Only birds were there, moving restlessly, darting about without fear, uttering their "cīcī kūcī" calls as they roamed (vihartum).
अथाष्टभागमापन्ने व्योम्नो दिवसनायके ।
शुष्कावश्यायलेशासु स्नातास्विव लतासु च ॥ ३९ ॥
athāṣṭabhāgamāpanne vyomno divasanāyake ,
śuṣkāvaśyāyaleśāsu snātāsviva latāsu ca 39
39. atha aṣṭabhāgam āpanne vyomnaḥ divasanāyake
śuṣkāvaśyāyaleśāsu snātāsu iva latāsu ca
39. atha divasanāyake vyomnaḥ aṣṭabhāgam āpanne,
ca latāsu śuṣkāvaśyāyaleśāsu snātāsu iva.
39. Then, when the sun, the leader of the day, had reached the eighth part of the sky, and upon the creepers, as if bathed in dry remnants of dew.
दृष्टा मया प्रभ्रमता दारिकौदनधारिणी ।
गृहीतामृतसत्कुम्भा दानवेनेव माधवी ॥ ४० ॥
dṛṣṭā mayā prabhramatā dārikaudanadhāriṇī ,
gṛhītāmṛtasatkumbhā dānaveneva mādhavī 40
40. dṛṣṭā mayā prabhramatā dārikā-odana-dhāriṇī
gṛhīta-amṛta-sat-kumbhā dānavenā iva mādhavī
40. prabhramatā mayā dārikā-odana-dhāriṇī gṛhīta-amṛta-sat-kumbhā dānavenā mādhavī iva dṛṣṭā.
40. As I wandered, I saw a young girl carrying cooked rice, who held a beautiful pot of ambrosia, appearing like Mādhavī (Lakṣmī) being seized by a demon.
तरत्तारकनेत्रां तां श्यामामधवलाम्बराम् ।
अहमभ्यागतस्तत्र शर्वरीमिव चन्द्रमाः ॥ ४१ ॥
tarattārakanetrāṃ tāṃ śyāmāmadhavalāmbarām ,
ahamabhyāgatastatra śarvarīmiva candramāḥ 41
41. tarat-tāraka-netrām tām śyāmām adhavalāmbarām
aham abhyāgataḥ tatra śarvarīm iva candramāḥ
41. aham tatra tarat-tāraka-netrām śyāmām adhavalāmbarām tām candramāḥ śarvarīm iva abhyāgataḥ.
41. I approached her, whose eyes were like shimmering stars, dark-complexioned, and wearing garments that were not white, just as the moon approaches the night.
मह्यमोदनमाश्वेतद्बाले बलवदापदि ।
देहिदीनार्तिहरणात्स्फारतां यान्ति संपदः ॥ ४२ ॥
mahyamodanamāśvetadbāle balavadāpadi ,
dehidīnārtiharaṇātsphāratāṃ yānti saṃpadaḥ 42
42. mahyaṃ odanam āśu etat bāle balavat-āpadi dehi
dīna-ārti-haraṇāt sphāratām yānti sampadaḥ
42. bāle,
balavat-āpadi mahyam etat odanam āśu dehi.
dīna-ārti-haraṇāt sampadaḥ sphāratām yānti.
42. O girl, quickly give this cooked rice to me, as I am in great distress. Fortunes (sampad) expand by alleviating the suffering of the poor.
क्षुदन्तर्महतीयं मे बाले वृद्धिमुपेयुषी ।
 कृष्णसर्पा प्रसूतेव कोटरस्था जरद्रुमे ॥ ४३ ॥
kṣudantarmahatīyaṃ me bāle vṛddhimupeyuṣī ,
 kṛṣṇasarpā prasūteva koṭarasthā jaradrume 43
43. kṣut antarmahatī iyam me bāle vṛddhim upeyuṣī
kṛṣṇasarpā prasūtā iva koṭarasthā jaradrume
43. bāle me iyam antarmahatī kṣut vṛddhim upeyuṣī
jaradrume koṭarasthā prasūtā kṛṣṇasarpā iva
43. O child, this immense hunger within me has grown, like a black serpent giving birth while residing in the hollow of an old tree.
याच्चयापि तया मह्यमित्थं दत्तं न किंचन ।
यत्नप्रार्थनया लक्ष्म्या यथा दुष्कृतिने धनम् ॥ ४४ ॥
yāccayāpi tayā mahyamitthaṃ dattaṃ na kiṃcana ,
yatnaprārthanayā lakṣmyā yathā duṣkṛtine dhanam 44
44. yāccayā api tayā mahyam ittham dattam na kiñcana
yatna-prārthanayā lakṣmyā yathā duṣkṛtine dhanam
44. tayā yāccayā api mahyam ittham kiñcana na dattam
yathā lakṣmyā yatna-prārthanayā duṣkṛtine dhanam
44. Even with such begging, nothing was given to me, just as the goddess of fortune (lakṣmī) does not grant wealth to a wicked person, even after great effort and prayer.
केवलं चिरकालेन मयात्यन्तानुगामिना ।
खण्डात्खण्डं निपतति च्छायाभूते पुरःस्थिते ॥ ४५ ॥
kevalaṃ cirakālena mayātyantānugāminā ,
khaṇḍātkhaṇḍaṃ nipatati cchāyābhūte puraḥsthite 45
45. kevalam cira-kālena mayā atyanta-anugāminā
khaṇḍāt khaṇḍam nipatati chāyā-bhūte puras-sthite
45. kevalam cira-kālena atyanta-anugāminā mayā
puras-sthite chāyā-bhūte khaṇḍāt khaṇḍam nipatati
45. Merely, over a long period, by me, who was an extremely devoted follower, it falls piece by piece, like a shadow existing in front.
तयोक्तं हारकेयूरिंश्चण्डालीं विद्धि मामिति ।
राक्षसीमिव सुक्रूरा पुरुषाश्वगजाशनाम् ॥ ४६ ॥
tayoktaṃ hārakeyūriṃścaṇḍālīṃ viddhi māmiti ,
rākṣasīmiva sukrūrā puruṣāśvagajāśanām 46
46. tayā uktam hārakeyūrīm caṇḍālīm viddhi mām iti
rākṣasīm iva su-krūrām puruṣa-aśva-gaja-āśanām
46. tayā uktam hārakeyūrīm caṇḍālīm mām iti viddhi
puruṣa-aśva-gaja-āśanām su-krūrām rākṣasīm iva
46. She said: 'Know me, Hārakeyūrī, to be an outcaste woman (caṇḍālī), extremely cruel like a demoness (rākṣasī), one who devours men, horses, and elephants.'
राजन्यार्चनमात्रेण मत्तो नाप्नोषि भोजनम् ।
ग्राम्यादनभिजातेहात्सौजन्यमिव सुन्दरम् ॥ ४७ ॥
rājanyārcanamātreṇa matto nāpnoṣi bhojanam ,
grāmyādanabhijātehātsaujanyamiva sundaram 47
47. rājanī arcana mātreṇa mattaḥ na āpnoṣi bhojanam
grāmyāt anabhijātehāt saujanyam iva sundaram
47. mattaḥ rājanī arcana mātreṇa bhojanam na āpnoṣi
iva grāmyāt anabhijāta īhāt sundaram saujanyam
47. You will not obtain food from me merely by worshiping a princess, just as one does not gain beautiful grace from a commoner whose efforts are ignoble.
इत्युक्तवत्या गच्छन्त्या खेलया च पदेपदे ।
कुञ्जकेषु निमज्जन्त्या लीलावनतयोदितम् ॥ ४८ ॥
ityuktavatyā gacchantyā khelayā ca padepade ,
kuñjakeṣu nimajjantyā līlāvanatayoditam 48
48. iti uktavatyā gacchantyā khelayā ca pade pade
kuñjakeṣu nimajjantyā līlāvanatayā uditam
48. iti uditam uktavatyā gacchantyā pade pade
khelayā ca kuñjakeṣu nimajjantyā līlāvanatayā
48. Thus, by the one who had spoken, as she walked playfully at every step, immersing herself in the small groves, these words were uttered with a graceful bend.
ददामि भोजनमिदं भर्ता भवसि चेन्मम ।
लोको नोपकरोत्यर्थैः सामान्यः स्निग्धतां विना ॥ ४९ ॥
dadāmi bhojanamidaṃ bhartā bhavasi cenmama ,
loko nopakarotyarthaiḥ sāmānyaḥ snigdhatāṃ vinā 49
49. dadāmi bhojanam idam bhartā bhavasi cet mama lokaḥ
na upakaroti arthaiḥ sāmānyaḥ snigdhatām vinā
49. aham idam bhojanam dadāmi cet tvam mama bhartā bhavasi
sāmānyaḥ lokaḥ snigdhatām vinā arthaiḥ na upakaroti
49. I will give you this food if you become my husband. An ordinary person does not render help with resources without (affectionate) attachment.
वाहयत्यत्र मे दान्तान्केदारे पुल्कसः पिता ।
श्मशान इव वेतालः क्षुधितो धूलिधूसरः ॥ ५० ॥
vāhayatyatra me dāntānkedāre pulkasaḥ pitā ,
śmaśāna iva vetālaḥ kṣudhito dhūlidhūsaraḥ 50
50. vāhayati atra me dāntān kedāre pulkasaḥ pitā
śmaśāne iva vetālaḥ kṣudhitaḥ dhūli-dhūsaraḥ
50. atra me pulkasaḥ pitā kedāre dāntān vāhayati
iva śmaśāne kṣudhitaḥ dhūli-dhūsaraḥ vetālaḥ
50. Here, my father, a Pulkasa, drives my tamed animals in the field, resembling a hungry, dust-grey vetāla in a cremation ground.
तस्येदमन्नं भवति भर्तृत्वे दीयते स्थिते ।
प्राणैरपि हि संपूज्या वल्लभाः पुरुषा यतः ॥ ५१ ॥
tasyedamannaṃ bhavati bhartṛtve dīyate sthite ,
prāṇairapi hi saṃpūjyā vallabhāḥ puruṣā yataḥ 51
51. tasya idam annam bhavati bhartṛtve dīyate sthite
prāṇaiḥ api hi saṃpūjyāḥ vallabhāḥ puruṣāḥ yataḥ
51. yataḥ vallabhāḥ puruṣāḥ prāṇaiḥ api hi saṃpūjyāḥ,
idam annam tasya bhavati,
bhartṛtve sthite dīyate
51. This food is for him; it is given when he assumes the role of husband. For indeed, beloved individuals should be honored even with one's very life.
अथोक्ता सा मया भर्ता भवामि तव सुव्रते ।
केनापदि विचार्यन्ते वर्णधर्मकुलक्रमाः ॥ ५२ ॥
athoktā sā mayā bhartā bhavāmi tava suvrate ,
kenāpadi vicāryante varṇadharmakulakramāḥ 52
52. atha uktā sā mayā bhartā bhavāmi tava suvrate
kena āpadi vicāryante varṇadharmakulakramāḥ
52. atha mayā sā uktā: he suvrate,
tava bhartā bhavāmi.
āpadi kena varṇadharmakulakramāḥ vicāryante?
52. Then I told her, 'O virtuous one, I will be your husband. For in times of distress, who indeed considers the intrinsic natures (dharma) of social classes and family traditions?'
ततस्तयौदनादर्धं मह्यमेकं समर्पितम् ।
माधव्येवामृतादर्धमिन्द्रायार्तिमहत्पुरा ॥ ५३ ॥
tatastayaudanādardhaṃ mahyamekaṃ samarpitam ,
mādhavyevāmṛtādardhamindrāyārtimahatpurā 53
53. tataḥ tayā odanāt ardham mahyam ekam samarpitam
mādhavī iva amṛtāt ardham indrāya ārtim ahat purā
53. tataḥ tayā odanāt ekam ardham mahyam samarpitam.
purā mādhavī iva ārtim (gatam) indrāya amṛtāt ardham ahat.
53. Then, by her, half of the rice (audana) was offered to me, just as Mādhavī once offered half of the nectar to Indra, who was suffering from distress.
जम्बूफलरसः पीतः स भुक्तः पक्कणौदनः ।
विश्रान्तं च मया तत्र मोहापहृतचेतसा ॥ ५४ ॥
jambūphalarasaḥ pītaḥ sa bhuktaḥ pakkaṇaudanaḥ ,
viśrāntaṃ ca mayā tatra mohāpahṛtacetasā 54
54. jambūphalarasaḥ pītaḥ sa bhuktaḥ pakkaṇa odanaḥ
viśrāntam ca mayā tatra moha apahṛta chetasā
54. jambūphalarasaḥ pītaḥ.
sa pakkaṇa odanaḥ bhuktaḥ.
ca mohāpahṛtacetasā mayā tatra viśrāntam.
54. The juice of the jambu fruit was consumed, and that rice from the village (pakkaṇa-audana) was eaten. And I rested there, my mind having been overcome by delusion.
मां तत्रार्कमिवापूर्य सा प्रावृट् श्यामला गता ।
हस्तेन समुपादाय प्राणं बहिरिव स्थितम् ॥ ५५ ॥
māṃ tatrārkamivāpūrya sā prāvṛṭ śyāmalā gatā ,
hastena samupādāya prāṇaṃ bahiriva sthitam 55
55. mām tatra arkam iva āpūrya sā prāvṛṭ śyāmalā
gatā hastena samupādāya prāṇam bahiḥ iva sthitam
55. sā śyāmalā prāvṛṭ mām tatra arkam iva āpūrya
gatā hastena bahiḥ iva sthitam prāṇam samupādāya
55. That dark rainy season, having enveloped me as it does the sun (with clouds), departed. It was as if it took away with its hand my very life (prāṇa), which seemed to reside outside of me.
दुराकृतिं दुरारम्भमाससाद भयप्रदम् ।
पितरं पीवराकारमवीचिमिव यातना ॥ ५६ ॥
durākṛtiṃ durārambhamāsasāda bhayapradam ,
pitaraṃ pīvarākāramavīcimiva yātanā 56
56. durākṛtim durārambham āsasāda bhayapradam
pitaram pīvarākāram avīcim iva yātanā
56. yātanā avīcim iva durākṛtim durārambham
bhayapradam pīvarākāram pitaram āsasāda
56. Torment (yātanā), like the Avīci (avīci) hell, approached the father, who had an ominous appearance, was prone to evil deeds, was terrifying, and possessed a massive physique.
तया मदनुषङ्गिण्या स्वार्थस्तस्मै निवेदितः ।
मातङ्गाय भ्रमर्येव निःस्वनेनालिलग्नया ॥ ५७ ॥
tayā madanuṣaṅgiṇyā svārthastasmai niveditaḥ ,
mātaṅgāya bhramaryeva niḥsvanenālilagnayā 57
57. tayā madanusaṅgiṇyā svārthaḥ tasmai niveditaḥ
mātaṅgāya bhramaryā iva niḥsvanena ālilagnayā
57. madanusaṅgiṇyā tayā svārthaḥ tasmai niveditaḥ
ālilagnayā bhramaryā iva niḥsvanena mātaṅgāya
57. Through her, who was devoted to me, her own desire was conveyed to him (the father). This was like a female bee, clinging closely to an elephant, communicating its presence with a low humming sound.
अयं मम भवेद्भर्ता तात हे तव रोचताम् ।
स तस्या बाढमित्युक्त्वा दिनान्ते समुपस्थिते ॥ ५८ ॥
ayaṃ mama bhavedbhartā tāta he tava rocatām ,
sa tasyā bāḍhamityuktvā dinānte samupasthite 58
58. ayam mama bhavet bhartā tāta he tava rocatām
saḥ tasyāḥ bāḍham iti uktvā dinānte samupasthite
58. ayam mama bhartā bhavet he tāta tava rocatām
saḥ tasyāḥ bāḍham iti uktvā dinānte samupasthite
58. 'O father, may this man become my husband, and may he be pleasing to you.' Having said 'Certainly' to her, as the end of the day (dinānta) arrived, he [further actions in the next verse].
मुमोच दान्तावाबद्धौ कृतान्तः किङ्कराविव ।
नीहाराभ्रकडारासु दिक्षु प्रोद्धूलितासु च ।
वेतालबन्धनात्तस्माद्दिनान्ते चलिता वयम् ॥ ५९ ॥
mumoca dāntāvābaddhau kṛtāntaḥ kiṅkarāviva ,
nīhārābhrakaḍārāsu dikṣu proddhūlitāsu ca ,
vetālabandhanāttasmāddinānte calitā vayam 59
59. mumoca dāntau ābaddhau kṛtāntaḥ
kiṅkarau iva nīhārābhrakaḍārāsu
dikṣu proddhūlitāsu ca vetālabandhanāt
tasmāt dinānte calitāḥ vayam
59. kṛtāntaḥ dāntau ābaddhau kiṅkarau iva mumoca.
vayam dinānte tasmāt vetālabandhanāt nīhārābhrakaḍārāsu proddhūlitāsu ca dikṣu calitāḥ.
59. As if Fate (kṛtānta) had released two bound and subdued servants, we departed at the end of the day from that confinement by the vetāla, amidst directions that were dark with mist and clouds and stirred up with dust.
क्षणेन पक्कणं प्राप्ताः संध्यायां दीर्घजङ्गलात् ।
श्मशानादिव वेतालाः श्मशानमितरन्महत् ॥ ६० ॥
kṣaṇena pakkaṇaṃ prāptāḥ saṃdhyāyāṃ dīrghajaṅgalāt ,
śmaśānādiva vetālāḥ śmaśānamitaranmahat 60
60. kṣaṇena pakkaṇam prāptāḥ sandhyāyām dīrghajaṅgalāt
śmaśānāt iva vetālāḥ śmaśānam itarat mahat
60. vayam dīrghajaṅgalāt sandhyāyām kṣaṇena pakkaṇam prāptāḥ.
(yathā) vetālāḥ śmaśānāt iva.
itarat (pakkaṇam) mahat śmaśānam.
60. In a moment, we reached the outcaste settlement at dusk, coming from the long forest, like vetālas emerging from a cremation ground. Indeed, that other place (the settlement itself) was a great cremation ground.
विकर्तितविभागस्थकपिकुक्कुटवायसम् ।
रक्तसिक्तोर्वराभागप्रभ्रमन्मक्षिकागणम् ॥ ६१ ॥

61. It (the outcaste settlement) was a place where monkeys, chickens, and crows were found among severed body parts, and where swarms of flies buzzed around areas of ground drenched in blood.
शोषार्थं प्रसृतार्द्रान्त्रतन्त्रीजालपतत्खगम् ।
निष्कुटस्थितजम्बीरखण्डलग्नखगध्वनि ॥ ६२ ॥

62. It (the outcaste settlement) was a place where birds swooped down onto networks of spread-out, wet entrails for drying, and where the cries of birds resonated, sticking to the pieces of citrus fruit found in the surrounding groves.

63. Where birds move about on courtyards full of large, drying lumps of fat; and where drops of blood drip from blood-smeared hides spread out to the eye.
बालहस्तस्थितक्रव्यपिण्डक्वणितमक्षिकम् ।
जर्जराधिष्ठचण्डालतर्जितारटितार्भकम् ॥ ६४ ॥

64. Where flies buzz around lumps of raw flesh in the hands of children; and where wailing children are threatened by outcastes residing in dilapidated dwellings.
तत्प्रविष्टा वयं कीर्णशिरान्त्र भीमपक्कणम् ।
मृतभूतं जगत्कल्पे कृतान्तानुचरा इव ॥ ६५ ॥
tatpraviṣṭā vayaṃ kīrṇaśirāntra bhīmapakkaṇam ,
mṛtabhūtaṃ jagatkalpe kṛtāntānucarā iva 65

65. We, having entered that dreadful outcaste settlement (pakkana) which was strewn with heads and intestines, felt as if we were attendants of Death (Kṛtānta) in a cosmic age (kalpa) where the world had become lifeless.
संभ्रमोपहितानल्पकदलीदलपीठके ।
अहमास्थितवांस्तत्र नवे श्वशुरमन्दिरे ॥ ६६ ॥

66. I sat there in the new house of my father-in-law, on a seat made of many banana leaves, which had been arranged with eager haste.
श्वश्र्वा मे केकराक्ष्या तु तेनासृग्लवचक्षुषा ।
जामातायमिति प्रोक्तं तया तदभिनन्दितम् ॥ ६७ ॥

jāmātāyamiti proktaṃ tayā tadabhinanditam 67

67. My squint-eyed mother-in-law, with blood-shot eyes, then said, 'This is the son-in-law.' That was approved by her.
अथ विश्रम्य चण्डालभोजनान्यजिनासने ।
संचितान्युपभुक्तानि दुष्कृतानीव भूरिशः ॥ ६८ ॥
atha viśramya caṇḍālabhojanānyajināsane ,
saṃcitānyupabhuktāni duṣkṛtānīva bhūriśaḥ 68

68. Then, having rested on a deer-skin seat, the accumulated meals of outcasts were consumed, as if they were numerous misdeeds (karma).
अनन्तदुःखबीजानि न मनोज्ञतराण्यपि ।
तानि प्रणयवाक्यानि श्रुतान्यसुभगान्यलम् ॥ ६९ ॥

tāni praṇayavākyāni śrutānyasubhagānyalam 69

69. Those heard words of affection were seeds of endless sorrow, and not even more pleasing, but certainly unpleasant.
निरभ्राम्बरनक्षत्रे कस्मिंश्चिद्दिवसे ततः ।
तैस्तैरारम्भसंरम्भैस्तैर्वस्त्रविभवार्पणैः ॥ ७० ॥
nirabhrāmbaranakṣatre kasmiṃściddivase tataḥ ,

70. Then, on a certain day with a cloudless, star-filled sky, through those various intense preparations and by those offerings of splendid garments.
दत्ताप्यनेन सा मह्यं कुमारी भयदायिनी ।
सुकृष्णा कृष्णवर्णेन दुष्कृतेनेव यातना ॥ ७१ ॥
dattāpyanena sā mahyaṃ kumārī bhayadāyinī ,
sukṛṣṇā kṛṣṇavarṇena duṣkṛteneva yātanā 71
71. dattā api anena sā mahyam kumārī bhayadayinī
sukṛṣṇā kṛṣṇavarṇena duṣkṛtena iva yātanā
71. anena sā bhayadayinī sukṛṣṇā kṛṣṇavarṇena kumārī api mahyam dattā,
duṣkṛtena iva yātanā
71. That terrifying, dark-skinned maiden was given to me by him, like a painful punishment (yātanā) resulting from evil (duṣkṛta) deeds.
सरभसमभितो विनेदुरत्र प्रसृतमहामदिरासवाः श्वपाकाः ।
हतपटुपटहा विलासवन्तः स्वयमिव दुष्कृतराशयो महान्तः ॥ ७२ ॥

hatapaṭupaṭahā vilāsavantaḥ svayamiva duṣkṛtarāśayo mahāntaḥ 72

72. Here, the Caṇḍālas (śvapāka), intoxicated by abundant liquor (madirāsava), roared loudly with great enthusiasm from all sides. They were reveling, beating loud drums, like great, embodied masses of their own evil (duṣkṛta) deeds.
