1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having spoken thus, the venerable lord then disappeared right there, just as a wave of water makes a sound at the edge of the shore-forest and then vanishes.
सुरास्त्वाकर्ण्य तद्वाक्यं जग्मुः स्वाभिमतां दिशम् ।
कमलामोदमादाय वनमालामिवानिलाः ॥ २ ॥
surāstvākarṇya tadvākyaṃ jagmuḥ svābhimatāṃ diśam ,
kamalāmodamādāya vanamālāmivānilāḥ 2
2. surāḥ tu ākarṇya tad vākyam jagmuḥ svābhimatām diśam
| kamalāmodam ādāya vanamālām iva anilāḥ || 2 ||
2. surāḥ tu tad vākyam ākarṇya svābhimatām diśam
jagmuḥ anilāḥ kamalāmodam ādāya vanamālām iva 2
2. But having heard that statement, the gods went in their desired direction, just as breezes carry off the fragrance of lotuses, like a garland of flowers.
दिनानि कतिचित्स्वेषु कान्तेषु स्थिरकान्तिषु ।
द्विरेफा इव पद्मेषु मन्दिरेषु विशश्रमुः ॥ ३ ॥

dvirephā iva padmeṣu mandireṣu viśaśramuḥ 3

3. For some days, they rested in their own beautiful abodes of lasting splendor, like bees in lotuses.
कंचित्कालं समासाद्य स्वात्मोदयकरं शुभम् ।
चक्रुर्दुन्दुभिनिर्घोषं प्रलयाभ्ररवोपमम् ॥ ४ ॥
kaṃcitkālaṃ samāsādya svātmodayakaraṃ śubham ,
cakrurdundubhinirghoṣaṃ pralayābhraravopamam 4
4. kañcit kālam samāsādya svātmodayakaram śubham |
cakruḥ dundubhinirghoṣam pralayābhraravopamam || 4 ||

4. Having obtained a certain auspicious time that would cause the manifestation of their own selves (ātman), they then made a drum sound resembling the roar of doomsday clouds.
अथ दैत्यैर्ममाव्योम्नि तैः पातालतले स्थितैः ।
कालक्षेपकरं घोरं पुनर्युद्धमवर्तत ॥ ५ ॥
atha daityairmamāvyomni taiḥ pātālatale sthitaiḥ ,
kālakṣepakaraṃ ghoraṃ punaryuddhamavartata 5
5. atha daityaiḥ mama avyomni taiḥ pātālatale sthitaiḥ
kālakṣepakaram ghoram punaḥ yuddham avartata
5. atha (then) mama avyomni sthitaiḥ (situated in my terrestrial realm) taiḥ ca pātālatale sthitaiḥ (and by those situated in the netherworld) daityaiḥ (by the demons) kālakṣepakaram (a time-consuming) ghoram (terrible) yuddham (battle) punaḥ (again) avartata (occurred).
5. Then, a terrible, time-consuming battle occurred again, waged by the demons present in my terrestrial realm and by those situated in the netherworld.
ववुरसिशरशक्तिमुद्गरौघा मुसलगदापरशूग्रचक्रशङ्खाः ।
अशनिगिरिशिलाहुताशवृक्षा अहिगरुडादिमुखानि चायुधानि ॥ ६ ॥

arrows,
spears,

maces,
axes,
fierce discuses,
conch shells) aśanigiriśilāhutāśavṛkṣāḥ (thunderbolts,
mountain rocks,
blazing trees) ahigaruḍādimukhāni ca (and forms like serpents,
eagles,
etc.
) āyudhāni (weapons) vavuḥ (rained down).
6. Torrents of swords, arrows, spears, and maces, along with clubs, maces, axes, fierce discuses, and conch shells, as well as thunderbolts, mountain rocks, blazing trees, and weapons shaped like serpents, eagles, and other forms, rained down.
मायाकृतायुधमहाम्बुघनप्रवाहा क्षिप्रावहा प्रतिदिशं किल निर्जगाम ।
पाषाणपर्वतमहीरुहलक्षवृक्षक्षुब्धाम्बुपूरघनघोषवती नदी द्राक् ॥ ७ ॥

7. kila (indeed) māyākṛtāyudhamahāmbughanapravāhā (creating a great torrent of illusory weapons,
vast waters,
and dense clouds) pāṣāṇaparvatamahīruhalakṣavṛkṣakṣubdhāmbupūraghanaghoṣavatī (roaring loudly,
its agitated flood turbulent with countless stones,
mountains,
and trees) kṣiprāvahā (swiftly flowing) nadī (a river) pratidiśam (in every direction) drāk (swiftly) nirjagāma (emerged).
7. Indeed, a swiftly flowing river (nadī), creating a great torrent of illusory (māyā) weapons, vast waters, and dense clouds, swiftly emerged in every direction. It roared loudly, its agitated flood turbulent with countless stones, mountains, and trees.
मध्यप्रवाहवहदुल्मुकशूलशैलप्रासासिकुन्तशरतोमरमुद्गरौघा गङ्गोपमाम्बुवलितामरमन्दिरेण सर्वासु दिक्ष्वशनिवर्षनिकर्षणेन ॥ ८ ॥ madhyapravāhavahadulmukaśūlaśailaprāsāsikuntaśaratomaramudgaraughā gaṅgopamāmbuvalitāmaramandireṇa sarvāsu dikṣvaśanivarṣanikarṣaṇena ।

मध्यप्रवाहवहदुल्मुकशूलशैलप्रासासिकुन्तशरतोमरमुद्गरौघा
गङ्गोपमाम्बुवलितामरमन्दिरेण सर्वासु दिक्ष्वशनिवर्षनिकर्षणेन ॥ ८ ॥
8. madhyapravāhavahadulmukaśūlaśailaprāsāsikuntaśaratomaramudgaraughāḥ
gaṅgopamāmbuvalitāmaramandireṇa
sarvāsu dikṣu aśanivarṣanikarṣaṇena
8. madhyapravāhavahadulmukaśūlaśailaprāsāsikuntaśaratomaramudgaraughāḥ (torrents of blazing brands,
spears,
rocks,
darts,
swords,
lances,
arrows,
javelins,
and maces flowing in the middle of the current) (were present); gaṅgopamāmbuvalitāmaramandireṇa (by means of the divine abode surrounded by Gaṅgā-like waters) sarvāsu dikṣu (in all directions) aśanivarṣanikarṣaṇena (and by the overwhelming rain of thunderbolts) (this was occurring).
8. Torrents of blazing brands, spears, rocks, darts, swords, lances, arrows, javelins, and maces flowed in its midst. (This was accompanied) by a divine abode surrounded by waters resembling the Gaṅgā, and by the overwhelming showering of thunderbolts in all directions.
पृथ्व्यादिदारुणशरीरमपि प्रहारदानग्रहा गहनराशिशरीरकेव ।
मायोपशाम्यति सुरासुरसिद्धसन्ना मायाकृतिः पुनरुदेति नचैव सैव ॥ ९ ॥
pṛthvyādidāruṇaśarīramapi prahāradānagrahā gahanarāśiśarīrakeva ,
māyopaśāmyati surāsurasiddhasannā māyākṛtiḥ punarudeti nacaiva saiva 9
9. pṛthvyādi-dāruṇa-śarīram api prahāra-dāna-grahā
gahana-rāśi-śarīrakā iva | māyā
upaśāmyati sura-asura-siddha-sannā
māyā-kṛtiḥ punaḥ udeti na ca eva sā eva ||
9. pṛthvyādi-dāruṇa-śarīram api prahāra-dāna-grahā gahana-rāśi-śarīrakā iva (asti).
sura-asura-siddha-sannā (saty api) māyā upaśāmyati.
punaḥ māyā-kṛtiḥ udeti ca sā eva na eva.
9. Even a formidable body, made of earth and other elements, which endures severe blows, is like a dense, massive form. The illusion (māyā) subsides, even as it is approached by gods, asuras, and perfected beings. However, a new manifestation of illusion (māyā) arises, and it is never quite the same as before.
शैलोपमायुधविघट्टितभूधराणि रक्ताम्बुपूरपरिपूर्णमहार्णवानि ।
दैवासुरेन्द्रशवशैलविरूढकुन्ततालीवनानि ककुभां वदनानि चासन् ॥ १० ॥
śailopamāyudhavighaṭṭitabhūdharāṇi raktāmbupūraparipūrṇamahārṇavāni ,
daivāsurendraśavaśailavirūḍhakuntatālīvanāni kakubhāṃ vadanāni cāsan 10
10. śaila-upamā-āyudha-vighaṭṭita-bhūdharāṇi
rakta-ambu-pūra-paripūrṇa-mahā-arṇavāni |
daiva-asura-indra-śava-śaila-virūḍha-kunta-tālī-vanāni
kakubhām vadanāni ca āsan ||
10. kakubhām vadanāni śaila-upamā-āyudha-vighaṭṭita-bhūdharāṇi,
rakta-ambu-pūra-paripūrṇa-mahā-arṇavāni,
daiva-asura-indra-śava-śaila-virūḍha-kunta-tālī-vanāni ca āsan.
10. The quarters of the world became a scene where mountains were shattered by mountain-like weapons, vast oceans were completely filled with surging torrents of blood, and where forests of spear-like palmyra trees grew upon the mountain-like corpses of the leading gods and asuras.
उद्गीर्णकुन्तशरशक्तिगदासिचक्रहेलानिगीर्णसुरदानवमुक्तशैला ।
काषोल्लसत्क्रकचदन्तनखाग्रमाला जीवान्विता ह्यपतदायससिंहसृष्टिः ॥ ११ ॥
udgīrṇakuntaśaraśaktigadāsicakrahelānigīrṇasuradānavamuktaśailā ,
kāṣollasatkrakacadantanakhāgramālā jīvānvitā hyapatadāyasasiṃhasṛṣṭiḥ 11
11. udgīrṇa-kunta-śara-śakti-gadā-asi-cakra-hela-nigīrṇa-sura-dānava-mukta-śailā
|
kāṣa-ullasat-krakaca-danta-nakha-agra-mālā
jīva-anvitā hi apatat āyasa-siṃha-sṛṣṭiḥ ||
11. jīva-anvitā,
udgīrṇa-kunta-śara-śakti-gadā-asi-cakra-hela-nigīrṇa-sura-dānava-mukta-śailā,
kāṣa-ullasat-krakaca-danta-nakha-agra-mālā āyasa-siṃha-sṛṣṭiḥ hi apatat.
11. The animate iron lion creation (sṛṣṭiḥ), which had disgorged spears, arrows, lances, maces, swords, and discuses, and had effortlessly swallowed mountains hurled by gods and asuras, and which possessed an array of sharp, gleaming, saw-like teeth and pointed claws, indeed fell.
उज्ज्वाललोचनविषज्वलनातपौघदिग्दाहदर्शितयुगान्तदिनेशसेना ।
उड्डीयमानपरिदीर्घमहामहीध्रमग्नाब्धिवद्विषधरावलिरुल्ललास ॥ १२ ॥
ujjvālalocanaviṣajvalanātapaughadigdāhadarśitayugāntadineśasenā ,
uḍḍīyamānaparidīrghamahāmahīdhramagnābdhivadviṣadharāvalirullalāsa 12
12. ujjvāla-locana-viṣa-jvalana-ātapa-ogha-dig-dāha-darśita-yugānta-dineśa-senā
|
uḍḍīyamāna-paridīrgha-mahā-mahīdhra-magna-abdhi-vat
viṣadhara-āvaliḥ ullalāsa ||
12. ujjvāla-locana-viṣa-jvalana-ātapa-ogha-dig-dāha-darśita-yugānta-dineśa-senā,
uḍḍīyamāna-paridīrgha-mahā-mahīdhra-magna-abdhi-vat viṣadhara-āvaliḥ ullalāsa.
12. A line of venomous serpents (viṣadharāvaliḥ) shone forth, which, with intensely blazing eyes, emitted poisonous fire and floods of scorching heat that caused the directions to burn, thus appearing like a host of suns at the end of an eon; and which, while flying and exceedingly long, resembled an ocean with vast mountains submerged within it.
उन्नादवज्रमकरोत्करकर्कशान्तःक्षुब्धाब्धिवीचिवलयैर्वलिताचलेन्द्रैः ।
आसीज्जगत्सकलमेव सुसंकटाङ्गमावृत्तिभिर्विविधहेतिनदीप्रवाहैः ॥ १३ ॥
unnādavajramakarotkarakarkaśāntaḥkṣubdhābdhivīcivalayairvalitācalendraiḥ ,
āsījjagatsakalameva susaṃkaṭāṅgamāvṛttibhirvividhahetinadīpravāhaiḥ 13
13. unnāda-vajra-makara-utkara-karkaśa-antaḥ-kṣubdha-abdhi-vīci-valayaiḥ
valita-acala-indraih
āsīt jagat sakalam eva su-saṃkaṭa-aṅgam
āvṛttibhiḥ vividha-heti-nadī-pravāhaiḥ
13. jagat sakalam eva
unnāda-vajra-makara-utkara-karkaśa-antaḥ-kṣubdha-abdhi-vīci-valayaiḥ
valita-acala-indraih vividha-heti-nadī-pravāhaiḥ
āvṛttibhiḥ su-saṃkaṭa-aṅgam āsīt
13. The entire world became utterly constricted and distressed, assailed by the currents of rivers formed by various weapons, by the multitude of waves from the agitated oceans whose depths were made turbulent by the harsh, roaring, thunderbolt-like hordes of sea-monsters, and by the mighty mountains that spun around.
शैलास्त्रशस्त्रगरुडाचलचालितोच्चनागं महासुरगणाङ्गणमन्तरिक्षम् ।
आसीत्क्षणं जलधिभिः क्षणमग्निपूरैः पूर्णं क्षणं दिनकरैः क्षणमन्धकारैः ॥ १४ ॥

āsītkṣaṇaṃ jaladhibhiḥ kṣaṇamagnipūraiḥ pūrṇaṃ kṣaṇaṃ dinakaraiḥ kṣaṇamandhakāraiḥ 14
14. śaila-astra-śastra-garuḍa-acala-cālita-ucca-nāgam
mahā-asura-gaṇa-aṅgaṇam antarikṣam
āsīt kṣaṇam jaladhibhiḥ kṣaṇam agni-pūraiḥ
pūrṇam kṣaṇam dinakaraiḥ kṣaṇam andhakāraiḥ
14. mahā-asura-gaṇa-aṅgaṇam
śaila-astra-śastra-garuḍa-acala-cālita-ucca-nāgam antarikṣam
kṣaṇam jaladhibhiḥ pūrṇam āsīt kṣaṇam
agni-pūraiḥ kṣaṇam dinakaraiḥ kṣaṇam andhakāraiḥ
14. The atmosphere (antarikṣa), which served as an arena for the vast legions of asuras and was agitated by mountains, missiles, weapons, Garuḍas, and soaring serpents, momentarily filled with oceans, then with floods of fire, then with suns, and then, for a moment, with darkness.
गरुडगुडगुडाकुलान्तरिक्षप्रविसृतहेतिहुताशपर्वतौघैः ।
जगदभवदसह्यकल्पकाले ज्वलितसुरालयभूतलान्तरालम् ॥ १५ ॥
garuḍaguḍaguḍākulāntarikṣapravisṛtahetihutāśaparvataughaiḥ ,
jagadabhavadasahyakalpakāle jvalitasurālayabhūtalāntarālam 15
15. garuḍa-guḍaguḍā-ākula-antarikṣa-pravasṛta-heti-huta-āśa-parvata-aughaiḥ
jagat abhavat asahya-kalpa-kāle
jvalita-sura-ālaya-bhūtala-antarālam

15. The world transformed into an unbearable time of cosmic dissolution (kalpa), as the space between the abodes of the gods and the surface of the earth blazed brightly, ignited by the multitudes of weapons, fires, and mountains that spread throughout the sky, agitated by the rumbling (guḍaguḍā) of Garuḍas.
उदपतन्नसुरावसुधातलाद्गगनमद्रितटादिव पक्षिणः ।
अतिबलादपतन्विबुधा भुवि प्रलयचालितशैलशिला इव ॥ १६ ॥
udapatannasurāvasudhātalādgaganamadritaṭādiva pakṣiṇaḥ ,
atibalādapatanvibudhā bhuvi pralayacālitaśailaśilā iva 16
16. udapatan asurāḥ vasudhā-talāt
gaganam adri-taṭāt iva pakṣiṇaḥ
ati-balāt apatan vibudhāḥ bhuvi
pralaya-cālita-śaila-śilāḥ iva

adri-taṭāt pakṣiṇaḥ iva udapatan
vibudhāḥ ati-balāt bhuvi
pralaya-cālita-śaila-śilāḥ iva apatan
16. The asuras ascended from the surface of the earth into the sky, just as birds take flight from a mountain peak. Meanwhile, the gods, with immense force, fell onto the earth, resembling mountain rocks dislodged during the cosmic dissolution (pralaya).
शरीररूढोन्नतहेतिवृक्षवनावलीलग्नमहाग्निदाहाः ।
सुरासुराः प्रापुरथाम्बरान्तः कल्पानिलान्दोलितशैलशोभाम् ॥ १७ ॥
śarīrarūḍhonnatahetivṛkṣavanāvalīlagnamahāgnidāhāḥ ,
surāsurāḥ prāpurathāmbarāntaḥ kalpānilāndolitaśailaśobhām 17
17. śarīrarūḍhonnatahetivṛkṣavanāvalīlagnamahāgnidāhāḥ
surāsurāḥ prāpuḥ atha ambarāntaḥ kalpānilāndolitaśailaśobhām

ambarāntaḥ kalpānilāndolitaśailaśobhām prāpuḥ
17. Then, the gods and demons, with their bodies appearing like rows of tall weapon-trees consumed by a great forest fire, attained in the sky the grandeur of mountains tossed about by the winds of cosmic dissolution.
सुरासुराद्रीन्द्रशरीरमुक्तै रक्तप्रवाहैरभितो भ्रमद्भिः ।
बभार पूर्णं परितोऽम्बरोऽद्रेः संध्याकरौघक्षतमङ्ग गङ्गाम् ॥ १८ ॥
surāsurādrīndraśarīramuktai raktapravāhairabhito bhramadbhiḥ ,
babhāra pūrṇaṃ parito'mbaro'dreḥ saṃdhyākaraughakṣatamaṅga gaṅgām 18
18. surāsurādrīndraśarīramuktaiḥ
raktapravāhaiḥ abhitaḥ bhramadbhiḥ
babhāra pūrṇam paritaḥ ambaraḥ adreḥ
sandhyākaraughakṣatam aṅga gaṅgām
18. aṅga ambaraḥ pūrṇam paritaḥ
surāsurādrīndraśarīramuktaiḥ abhitaḥ
bhramadbhiḥ raktapravāhaiḥ adreḥ
sandhyākaraughakṣatam gaṅgām babhāra
18. Indeed, the sky, completely filled, then bore the sight of the Gaṅgā, which was stained red as if wounded by the multitude of evening rays, (a sight created) by the streams of blood released from the bodies of the gods and demons, who were like mighty mountains, swirling all around the mountain.
गिरिवर्षणमम्बुवर्षणं विविधोग्रायुधवर्षणं तथा ।
विषमाशनिवर्षणं च ते सममन्योन्यमथाग्निवर्षणम् ॥ १९ ॥
girivarṣaṇamambuvarṣaṇaṃ vividhogrāyudhavarṣaṇaṃ tathā ,
viṣamāśanivarṣaṇaṃ ca te samamanyonyamathāgnivarṣaṇam 19
19. girivarṣaṇam ambuvarṣaṇam vividhogrāyudhavarṣaṇam tathā
viṣamāśanivarṣaṇam ca te samam anyonyam atha agnivarṣaṇam
19. atha te anyonyam samam girivarṣaṇam ambuvarṣaṇam
vividhogrāyudhavarṣaṇam tathā viṣamāśanivarṣaṇam ca agnivarṣaṇam
19. Then, they (the gods and demons) showered each other simultaneously with rains of mountains, rains of water, rains of various fierce weapons, and similarly, rains of terrible thunderbolts, and rains of fire.
अनयन्नयमार्गकोविदा दलिताशेषगिरीन्द्रभित्तयः ।
ससृजुश्च समं समन्ततः करिकुम्भेष्विव पुण्यवर्षणम् ॥ २० ॥
anayannayamārgakovidā dalitāśeṣagirīndrabhittayaḥ ,
sasṛjuśca samaṃ samantataḥ karikumbheṣviva puṇyavarṣaṇam 20
20. anayan nayamārgakovidāḥ dalitāśeṣagirīndrabhittayaḥ
sasṛjuḥ ca samam samantataḥ karikumbheṣu iva puṇyavarṣaṇam
20. nayamārgakovidāḥ dalitāśeṣgirīndrabhittayaḥ
(surāsurāḥ) anayan
ca samantataḥ karikumbheṣu
iva samam puṇyavarṣaṇam sasṛjuḥ
20. And the gods and demons, skilled in the path of strategy, whose bodies were like great mountains with shattered sides, carried out their warfare, and simultaneously, from all sides, they released a devastating shower (of attacks), as if upon the frontal globes of elephants.
देवासुराः समरसंभ्रममाकुलास्ते अन्योन्यमङ्गदलनाकुलहेतिहस्ताः ।

21. Agitated by the tumult of battle, the gods and demons, with weapons in their hands, eager to dismember one another, their glory scattered by the mighty crushing of the ranks of young elephants, roamed through the sky, relentlessly hurling (weapons).
छिन्नैः शिरःकरभुजोरुभरैर्भ्रमद्भिराकाशकाष्ठशलभैरशिवैस्तदानीम् ।
आसीज्जगज्जठरमभ्रभरैरिवोग्रैराभास्करस्थगितदिक्तटशैलजालम् ॥ २२ ॥

bhramadbhiḥ ākāśakāṣṭhaśalabhaiḥ aśivaiḥ
jagajjaṭharam ugraiḥ abhrabharaiḥ
iva ābhāskarasthagitadiktāṭaśailajālam āsīt
22. Then, the vast expanse of the world, its horizons (diktāṭa) veiled up to the sun by mountain-like heaps, appeared as if covered by fierce masses of clouds, as severed heads, hands, arms, and thighs whirled ominously like locusts through the sky's quarters.
रटद्भटास्फोटकटिस्फुटद्भिः समीरितैर्हेतिकलासितौघैः ।
परस्पराघातहतैः पतद्भिर्जगाम शीर्णा दलशो धरित्री ॥ २३ ॥

23. The earth became shattered, torn into pieces, by the roaring warriors whose waistbands burst from the force of their blows, by the masses of glittering weapons they hurled, and by the falling (fighters) who were struck down by mutual assaults.
अन्योन्यमायुधशिलाचलवृक्षवर्षैर्मेरुप्रमाणकठिनाङ्गनिघर्षणैश्च ।
आसीद्रणं चटचटास्फुटदन्तरिक्षं कल्पक्षयान्तमिव भीमभरोग्रनादैः ॥ २४ ॥

raṇam kalpakṣayāntam iva āsīt
24. The battle, with its terrifying and fiercely intense roars and the sky splitting with crackling sounds, became like the end of a cosmic destruction (kalpakṣaya). This occurred as they showered each other with weapons, rocks, mountains, and trees, and as their hard bodies, massive as Mount Meru, ground against one another.
मत्तानिलक्षुब्धजलानलार्कदलद्वयं दीर्घसुरासुरौघम् ।
ब्रह्माण्डमाखण्डितकुड्यकोणसकालकल्पान्तकरालमासीत् ॥ २५ ॥

25. The cosmic egg (brahmāṇḍa) was terrifying, resembling a cosmic dissolution (kalpānta) in its very timing, its containing walls shattered at the corners. It encompassed a vast multitude of gods and demons, its two halves, like suns, agitated by furious winds, water, and fire.
भ्रान्तैर्भृशं भरितदिक्तटमद्रिकूटैरात्मप्रमाणघनहेतिहतै रणद्भिः कूजद्भिरार्तिभिरिवोग्रगुहोच्चवातैः क्रन्दद्भिरापतितसिंहरवैरदभ्रैः ॥ २६ ॥ bhrāntairbhṛśaṃ bharitadiktaṭamadrikūṭairātmapramāṇaghanahetihatai raṇadbhiḥ kūjadbhirārtibhirivograguhoccavātaiḥ krandadbhirāpatitasiṃharavairadabhraiḥ ।

kūjadbhiḥ ārtibhiḥ iva ugraguhoccavātaiḥ

26. adabhraiḥ bhṛśam bhrāntaiḥ bharitadiktaṭādrikūṭaiḥ
ātmapramāṇaghanahetihataiḥ
raṇadbhiḥ kūjadbhiḥ ārtibhiḥ iva
ugraguhoccavātaiḥ krandadbhiḥ āpatitasiṃharavaiḥ
26. By the immense mountain peaks, wandering intensely and filling all directions, struck by mighty weapons matching their own colossal size, roaring, and crying out as if in agony, resembling fierce winds from deep caves, and wailing with roars like those of falling lions.
मायानदीजलधियोधघनाग्निदाहैर्वृक्षैः सुरासुरशवैरचलैः शिलोच्चैः ।
भ्रान्तेः शरासिशितशक्तिगदास्त्रशस्त्रैर्वातावकीर्णवनपर्णवदन्तरन्तः ॥ २७ ॥

27. antar antaḥ vātāvakiṇavanaparṇavat
māyānadījaladhiyodhaghanagnidāhaiḥ vṛkṣaiḥ
surāsuraśavaiḥ acalaiḥ śiloccaiḥ
bhrānteḥ śarāsiśitaśaktigadāstraśastraiḥ
27. Within, everything was scattered like forest leaves dispersed by the wind: consumed by destructive fires as intense as warriors, oceans, and rivers of illusion (māyā); by trees; by the corpses of gods and demons; by unmoving mountains and lofty rocks; and by the arrows, swords, sharpened spears, maces, missiles, and weapons of delusion (bhrānti).

28. Quickly (drāk), there emerged a vast deluge (ogham) of water-filled oceans, divine cities, and the bodies of falling warriors, all scattered by winds as powerful as great mountains. This transformation occurred through (by) dreadful bodies, which possessed irresistible elephantine strength and were described as being incapable of movement due to the immense size of their wings, vast as those of the king of mountains.
घनघुंघुमपूरितान्तरिक्षा क्षतजक्षालितभूधरा धरा च ।
रुधिरह्रदवृत्तिवर्तिनी वा भुवनाभोगगुहा तदाकुलाभूत् ॥ २९ ॥

29. Then, the earth, with its atmosphere filled with a deep rumbling sound and its mountains washed with blood, or indeed, the cavernous expanse of the world itself, becoming like a pool of blood, became greatly agitated.
अनन्तदृक्प्रसृतविकारकारिणी क्षयोदयोन्मुखसुखदुःखशंसिनी ।
रणक्रियासुरसुरघट्टसंकटा तदाभवत्खलु सदृशीह संसृतेः ॥ ३० ॥

saṃsṛteḥ sadṛśī abhavat
30. Then, that battle, which caused the unfolding of countless visible transformations, which foretold the joys and sorrows associated with cycles of rise and fall, and which was perilous with the clashing of demons and gods, truly became like the cycle of transmigration (saṃsāra) here.
