अन्यमुनिरुवाच ।
आवयोश्चरतोस्तस्मिन्वने चिरतरं तपः ।
मृगानुसरणश्रान्तो मृगव्याध उपैष्यति ॥ १ ॥

āvayoścaratostasminvane cirataraṃ tapaḥ ,
mṛgānusaraṇaśrānto mṛgavyādha upaiṣyati 1
1. anya muniḥ uvāca āvayoḥ caratoḥ tasmin vane cirataram
tapaḥ mṛgānusaraṇaśrāntaḥ mṛgavyādhaḥ upaiṣyati
1. anya muniḥ uvāca mṛgānusaraṇaśrāntaḥ mṛgavyādhaḥ
upaiṣyati āvayoḥ caratoḥ tasmin vane cirataram tapaḥ
1. Another sage said: As we two perform prolonged austerity (tapas) while roaming in that forest, a hunter, exhausted from tracking deer, will approach.
तं त्वं स्वभावपुण्याभिः कथाभिर्बोधयिष्यसि ।
तपस्तत्रैव विपिने स विरक्तश्चरिष्यति ॥ २ ॥
taṃ tvaṃ svabhāvapuṇyābhiḥ kathābhirbodhayiṣyasi ,
tapastatraiva vipine sa viraktaścariṣyati 2
2. tam tvam svabhāva-puṇyābhiḥ kathābhiḥ bodhayiṣyasi
| tapaḥ tatra eva vipine saḥ viraktaḥ cariṣyati ||
2. tvam tam svabhāva-puṇyābhiḥ kathābhiḥ bodhayiṣyasi
viraktaḥ saḥ tatra eva vipine tapaḥ cariṣyati
2. You will enlighten him with naturally pure stories. Detached, he will perform spiritual austerities (tapas) right there in that forest.
ततस्तपस्विचर्याणामात्मज्ञानबुभुत्सया ।
मध्ये स स्वप्नजिज्ञासुः प्रक्ष्यति स्वप्नसंकथाम् ॥ ३ ॥
tatastapasvicaryāṇāmātmajñānabubhutsayā ,
madhye sa svapnajijñāsuḥ prakṣyati svapnasaṃkathām 3
3. tataḥ tapasvi-caryāṇām ātmajñāna-bubhutsayā | madhye
saḥ svapna-jijñāsuḥ prākṣyati svapna-saṅkathām ||
3. tataḥ ātmajñāna-bubhutsayā,
tapasvi-caryāṇām madhye,
saḥ svapna-jijñāsuḥ (san),
svapna-saṅkathām prākṣyati
3. Then, amidst the ascetics' practices, driven by a desire for knowledge of the Self (ātman), he, curious about dreams, will inquire about the discourse on dreams.
कथयिष्यसि तस्मै त्वमात्मज्ञानमखण्डितम् ।
स्वप्नाख्येन प्रसङ्गेन सोऽतो योग्यो भविष्यति ॥ ४ ॥
kathayiṣyasi tasmai tvamātmajñānamakhaṇḍitam ,
svapnākhyena prasaṅgena so'to yogyo bhaviṣyati 4
4. kathayiṣyasi tasmai tvam ātmajñānam akhaṇḍitam |
svapna-ākhyena prasaṅgena saḥ ataḥ yogyaḥ bhaviṣyati ||
4. tvam tasmai akhaṇḍitam ātmajñānam kathayiṣyasi saḥ
svapna-ākhyena prasaṅgena ataḥ yogyaḥ bhaviṣyati
4. You will tell him the complete knowledge of the Self (ātman) through the context of what is called a dream. Therefore, he will become qualified.
इत्यनेन प्रकारेण गुरुस्तस्य भविष्यसि ।
तेन तात मयोक्तोऽसि गिरा व्याधगुरो इति ॥ ५ ॥
ityanena prakāreṇa gurustasya bhaviṣyasi ,
tena tāta mayokto'si girā vyādhaguro iti 5
5. iti anena prakāreṇa guruḥ tasya bhaviṣyasi |
tena tāta mayā uktaḥ asi girā vyādha-guro iti ||
5. iti anena prakāreṇa tvam tasya guruḥ bhaviṣyasi tena he tāta,
mayā girā 'vyādha-guro' iti uktaḥ asi
5. Thus, by this method, you will become his teacher (guru). Therefore, my dear child, you have been called by me 'the guru of the hunter' with this word.
इति ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथायं संसृतिभ्रमः ।
यथाहं यादृशश्च त्वमिह यत्ते भविष्यति ॥ ६ ॥
iti te sarvamākhyātaṃ yathāyaṃ saṃsṛtibhramaḥ ,
yathāhaṃ yādṛśaśca tvamiha yatte bhaviṣyati 6
6. iti te sarvam ākhyātam yathā ayam saṃsṛtibhramaḥ
yathā aham yādṛśaḥ ca tvam iha yat te bhaviṣyati
6. iti te sarvam ākhyātam yathā ayam saṃsṛtibhramaḥ
yathā aham yādṛśaḥ ca tvam iha yat te bhaviṣyati
6. Thus, everything has been explained to you: how this illusion of transmigration (saṃsāra) arises, what my nature is, what your nature is, and what your future in this world will be.
इति तेनाहमुक्तः सन्विस्मयाकुलया धिया ।
तेन सार्धं विमृश्यैतत्परं विस्मयमागतः ॥ ७ ॥
iti tenāhamuktaḥ sanvismayākulayā dhiyā ,
tena sārdhaṃ vimṛśyaitatparaṃ vismayamāgataḥ 7
7. iti tena aham uktaḥ san vismayākulayā dhiyā
tena sārdham vimṛśya etat param vismayam āgataḥ
7. iti tena aham uktaḥ san vismayākulayā dhiyā
tena sārdham etat vimṛśya param vismayam āgataḥ
7. Thus, having been addressed by him, with my intellect bewildered by astonishment, and having deeply pondered over this together with him, I reached a state of supreme wonder.
अथ रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां स प्रभाते महामुनिः ।
तथा संपूजितो येन तत्रैव रतिमाप्तवान् ॥ ८ ॥
atha rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃ sa prabhāte mahāmuniḥ ,
tathā saṃpūjito yena tatraiva ratimāptavān 8
8. atha rātryām vyatītāyām sa prabhāte mahāmuniḥ
tathā sampūjitaḥ yena tatra eva ratim āptavān
8. atha rātryām vyatītāyām sa mahāmuniḥ prabhāte
yena tathā sampūjitaḥ tatra eva ratim āptavān
8. Then, after the night had passed, that great sage, having been duly honored by him in the morning, found contentment right there.
अनन्तरं गृहे तस्मिंस्तस्मिन्ग्रामगृहे तथा ।
स्थितावावां स्थिरमती कृतभावौ परस्परम् ॥ ९ ॥
anantaraṃ gṛhe tasmiṃstasmingrāmagṛhe tathā ,
sthitāvāvāṃ sthiramatī kṛtabhāvau parasparam 9
9. anantaram gṛhe tasmin tasmin grāmagṛhe tathā
sthitau āvām sthiramatī kṛtabhāvau parasparam
9. anantaram āvām sthiramatī kṛtabhāvau parasparam
tasmin gṛhe tasmin grāmagṛhe tathā sthitau
9. Thereafter, we both, with firm minds and having established mutual affection, remained in that house, that village house.
ततो वहति कालोऽयमृतुसंवत्सरात्मकः ।
स्थितोऽहमागतान्भावांस्त्यजन्गृह्णन्गिरिर्यथा ॥ १० ॥
tato vahati kālo'yamṛtusaṃvatsarātmakaḥ ,
sthito'hamāgatānbhāvāṃstyajangṛhṇangiriryathā 10
10. tataḥ vahati kālaḥ ayam ṛtusaṃvatsarātmakaḥ sthitaḥ
aham āgatān bhāvān tyajan gṛhṇan giriḥ yathā
10. ayam ṛtusaṃvatsarātmakaḥ kālaḥ tataḥ vahati aham
āgatān bhāvān tyajan gṛhṇan giriḥ yathā sthitaḥ
10. This time, characterized by seasons and years, flows on. I remain steadfast, like a mountain, letting go of arriving states of being and embracing new ones.
नाभिवाञ्छामि मरणं नाभिवाञ्छामि जीवितम् ।
यथा स्थितोऽस्मि तिष्ठामि तथैव विगतज्वरम् ॥ ११ ॥
nābhivāñchāmi maraṇaṃ nābhivāñchāmi jīvitam ,
yathā sthito'smi tiṣṭhāmi tathaiva vigatajvaram 11
11. na abhivāñchāmi maraṇam na abhivāñchāmi jīvitam
yathā sthitaḥ asmi tiṣṭhāmi tathā eva vigatajvaram
11. aham maraṇam na abhivāñchāmi jīvitam na abhivāñchāmi
yathā asmi sthitaḥ tathā eva vigatajvaram tiṣṭhāmi
11. I do not long for death, nor do I long for life. I remain just as I am, free from anxiety.
ततो विचारितं तत्र तन्मया दृश्यमण्डलम् ।
किं कारणमिदं तु स्यात्किमयं वेत्ति चेतसा ॥ १२ ॥
tato vicāritaṃ tatra tanmayā dṛśyamaṇḍalam ,
kiṃ kāraṇamidaṃ tu syātkimayaṃ vetti cetasā 12
12. tataḥ vicāritam tatra tat mayā dṛśyamaṇḍalam
kim kāraṇam idam tu syāt kim ayam vetti chetasā
12. tataḥ tatra tat dṛśyamaṇḍalam mayā vicāritam
idam kim kāraṇam tu syāt ayam kim chetasā vetti
12. Then, I contemplated that visible realm. What could be the reason for this? And what does this consciousness (chetas) truly comprehend through the mind?
कोऽयं पदार्थसंघातः किं नामैतस्य कारणम् ।
अस्त्यस्मिन्स्वप्नसंदर्शे चिद्व्योमैकस्वरूपिणि ॥ १३ ॥
ko'yaṃ padārthasaṃghātaḥ kiṃ nāmaitasya kāraṇam ,
astyasminsvapnasaṃdarśe cidvyomaikasvarūpiṇi 13
13. kaḥ ayam padārthasaṃghātaḥ kim nāma etasya kāraṇam
asti asmin svapnasaṃdarśe citvyomaikasvarūpiṇi
13. ayam padārthasaṃghātaḥ kaḥ etasya kim nāma kāraṇam
citvyomaikasvarūpiṇi asmin svapnasaṃdarśe asti
13. What is this collection of phenomena? What, indeed, is its cause? Does it exist within this dream-like appearance, which is of the nature of the singular space of consciousness (cit)?
द्यौः क्षमा वायुराकाशं पर्वताः सरितो दिशः ।
चिन्मात्रनभ एवैते कचन्त्यात्मन्यवस्थितम् ॥ १४ ॥
dyauḥ kṣamā vāyurākāśaṃ parvatāḥ sarito diśaḥ ,
cinmātranabha evaite kacantyātmanyavasthitam 14
14. dyauḥ kṣamā vāyuḥ ākāśam parvatāḥ saritaḥ diśaḥ
cinmātranabhaḥ eva ete kacanti ātmani avasthitam
14. dyauḥ kṣamā vāyuḥ ākāśam parvatāḥ saritaḥ diśaḥ
ete eva ātmani avasthitam cinmātranabhaḥ kacanti
14. The sky, the earth, the wind, space, mountains, rivers, and directions - all these appear as merely the sky of consciousness (cit), situated within the Self (ātman).
चिच्चन्द्रिकाचतुर्दिक्कमवभासं तनोति यत् ।
तदिदं जगदाभाति चित्रमप्रतिघात्म खे ॥ १५ ॥
ciccandrikācaturdikkamavabhāsaṃ tanoti yat ,
tadidaṃ jagadābhāti citramapratighātma khe 15
15. cit candrikā caturdikkam avabhāsam tanoti yat
tat idam jagat ābhāti citram apratighātma khe
15. yat cit candrikā caturdikkam avabhāsam tanoti,
tat idam citram apratighātma jagat khe ābhāti
15. That (illumination) which the moonlight of consciousness (cit) spreads in all four directions - by that, this wondrous world, whose nature is unobstructed, appears in space (kha).
नेमेऽद्रयो न चेयं भूर्नेदं खं नायमप्यहम् ।
चिन्मात्रव्योमकचनमिदमाभाति केवलम् ॥ १६ ॥
neme'drayo na ceyaṃ bhūrnedaṃ khaṃ nāyamapyaham ,
cinmātravyomakacanamidamābhāti kevalam 16
16. na ime adrayah na ca iyam bhūḥ na idam kham na ayam
api aham cinmātravyomakacanam idam ābhāti kevalam
16. ime adrayah na,
ca iyam bhūḥ na,
idam kham na,
api ayam aham na.
idam kevalam cinmātravyomakacanam ābhāti
16. These are not mountains, nor is this the earth, nor is this space (kha), nor am I even this (body/ego). This (entire manifestation) appears solely as the shining forth of the consciousness-only sky (cinmātra vyoma).
पदार्थजातस्यास्य स्यात्किं नाम बत कारणम् ।
पिण्डग्रहे हेतुना तु विना कोऽप्यर्थसंभवः ॥ १७ ॥
padārthajātasyāsya syātkiṃ nāma bata kāraṇam ,
piṇḍagrahe hetunā tu vinā ko'pyarthasaṃbhavaḥ 17
17. padārthajātasya asya syāt kim nāma bata kāraṇam
piṇḍagrahe hetunā tu vinā kaḥ api arthasaṃbhavaḥ
17. bata,
asya padārthajātasya kim nāma kāraṇam syāt? tu hetunā vinā piṇḍagrahe kaḥ api arthasaṃbhavaḥ?
17. What, indeed, could be the cause of this collection of phenomena? Alas! How can there be any possibility of the existence of an object (artha) or its apprehension in a concrete form (piṇḍagraha) without a cause?
भ्रान्तिमात्रमिदं चेत्स्याद्भ्रान्तेः किं नाम कारणम् ।
द्रष्टा मन्ता च को भ्रान्तेः कारणं वा क्व कीदृशम् ॥ १८ ॥
bhrāntimātramidaṃ cetsyādbhrānteḥ kiṃ nāma kāraṇam ,
draṣṭā mantā ca ko bhrānteḥ kāraṇaṃ vā kva kīdṛśam 18
18. bhrāntimātram idam cet syāt bhrānteḥ kim nāma kāraṇam
draṣṭā mantā ca kaḥ bhrānteḥ kāraṇam vā kva kīdṛśam
18. cet idam bhrāntimātram syāt bhrānteḥ nāma kāraṇam kim ca
bhrānteḥ draṣṭā mantā kaḥ vā bhrānteḥ kāraṇam kva kīdṛśam
18. If this is merely an illusion (bhrānti), then what exactly is its cause? Who is the seer and the thinker of this illusion? Or, where is the cause of this illusion located, and of what nature is it?
यस्याहमवसं संविन्मात्रकं हृदयौजसि ।
असौ मया सह गतः किलाशेषेण भस्मसात् ॥ १९ ॥
yasyāhamavasaṃ saṃvinmātrakaṃ hṛdayaujasi ,
asau mayā saha gataḥ kilāśeṣeṇa bhasmasāt 19
19. yasya aham avasam saṃvinmātrakam hṛdayaujasi
asau mayā saha gataḥ kila aśeṣeṇa bhasmasāt
19. aham saṃvinmātrakam yasya hṛdayaujasi avasam
asau mayā saha aśeṣeṇa bhasmasāt gataḥ kila
19. The one (or that reality) in whose heart's (hṛdaya) vital power I, as mere consciousness (saṃvit), resided, has, it is said, entirely turned to ashes, along with me.
tasmādidamanādyantaṃ cidābhāmātramambaram ।
akartṛkarmakaraṇaṃ rūpaṃ ciddhanamakramam ।

tasmādidamanādyantaṃ cidābhāmātramambaram ,
akartṛkarmakaraṇaṃ rūpaṃ ciddhanamakramam 20
