अथ वर्षसहस्रेण तां पितामह आययौ ।
दारुणं हि तपः सिद्ध्यै विषाग्निरपि शीतलः ॥ १ ॥

atha varṣasahasreṇa tāṃ pitāmaha āyayau ,
dāruṇaṃ hi tapaḥ siddhyai viṣāgnirapi śītalaḥ 1
1. śrī-vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca atha varṣa-sahasreṇa tām pitāmahaḥ
āyayau dāruṇam hi tapaḥ siddhyai viṣa-agniḥ api śītalaḥ

āyayau hi dāruṇam tapaḥ siddhyai viṣa-agniḥ api śītalaḥ
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, after a thousand years, the Grandfather (Brahma) approached her, for in the attainment of severe penance (tapas), even the fire of poison becomes cool.
मनसैव प्रणम्यैनं सा तथैव स्थिता सती ।
को वरः क्षुच्छमायालमिति चिन्तान्विताभवत् ॥ २ ॥
manasaiva praṇamyainaṃ sā tathaiva sthitā satī ,
ko varaḥ kṣucchamāyālamiti cintānvitābhavat 2
2. manasā eva praṇamya enam sā tathā eva sthitā satī
kaḥ varaḥ kṣut śamāyāya alam iti cintā anvitā abhavat
2. sā manasā enam praṇamya tathā eva stitā satī,
kṣut śamāyāya kaḥ varaḥ alam iti cintā anvitā abhavat
2. Mentally bowing to him, she remained in that state, and became filled with worry, thinking, "What boon would be sufficient to appease my hunger?"
आ स्मृतं प्रार्थयिष्येऽहं वरमेकमिमं विभुम् ।
अनायसी चायसी च स्यामहं जीवसूचिका ॥ ३ ॥
ā smṛtaṃ prārthayiṣye'haṃ varamekamimaṃ vibhum ,
anāyasī cāyasī ca syāmahaṃ jīvasūcikā 3
3. ā smṛtam prārthayiṣye aham varam ekam imam
vibhum anāyasī ca āyasī ca syām aham jīvasūcikā
3. ā smṛtam! aham imam ekam vibhum varam prārthayiṣye.
aham anāyasī ca āyasī ca jīvasūcikā syām
3. "Ah, I remember! I will request this one mighty boon: that I may be a living needle, both non-iron and iron."
अस्योक्त्या द्विविधा सूचिर्भूत्वालक्ष्या विशाम्यहम् ।
प्राणिनां सह सर्वेषां हृदयं सुरभिर्यथा ॥ ४ ॥
asyoktyā dvividhā sūcirbhūtvālakṣyā viśāmyaham ,
prāṇināṃ saha sarveṣāṃ hṛdayaṃ surabhiryathā 4
4. asya uktyā dvividhā sūciḥ bhūtvā alakṣyā viśāmi
aham prāṇinām saha sarveṣām hṛdayam surabhiḥ yathā
4. asya uktyā aham dvividhā alakṣyā sūciḥ bhūtvā
sarveṣām prāṇinām saha hṛdayam surabhiḥ yathā viśāmi
4. By his utterance, becoming a two-fold, imperceptible needle, I shall enter the hearts of all living beings, just as a fragrance does.
यथाभिमतमेतेन ग्रसेयं सकलं जगत् ।
क्रमेण क्षुद्विनाशाय क्षुद्विनाशः परं सुखम् ॥ ५ ॥
yathābhimatametena graseyaṃ sakalaṃ jagat ,
krameṇa kṣudvināśāya kṣudvināśaḥ paraṃ sukham 5
5. yathā abhimatam etena graseyam sakalam jagat
krameṇa kṣut vināśāya kṣut vināśaḥ param sukham
5. etena,
yathā abhimatam,
aham krameṇa sakalam jagat kṣut vināśāya graseyam.
kṣut vināśaḥ param sukham
5. By means of this (boon), as I desire, I shall devour the entire world gradually for the destruction of hunger; for the destruction of hunger is indeed the supreme happiness.
इति संचिन्तयन्तीं तामुवाच कमलालयः ।
अन्यादृश्यास्तथा दृष्ट्वा स्तनिताभ्रारवोपमम् ॥ ६ ॥
iti saṃcintayantīṃ tāmuvāca kamalālayaḥ ,
anyādṛśyāstathā dṛṣṭvā stanitābhrāravopamam 6
6. iti saṃcintayantīm tām uvāca kamalālayaḥ
anyādṛśyāḥ tathā dṛṣṭvā stanitābhrāravopamam
6. kamalālayaḥ iti saṃcintayantīm tām anyādṛśyāḥ
tathā stanitābhrāravopamam dṛṣṭvā uvāca
6. Brahmā (Kamalalaya) spoke to her, who was thus absorbed in thought, having observed her in an unusual state, resembling the roar of thunderous clouds.
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
पुत्रि कर्कटिके रक्षःकुलशैलाभ्रमालिके ।
उत्तिष्ठ त्वं तु तुष्टोऽस्मि गृहाणाभिमतं वरम् ॥ ७ ॥
brahmovāca ,
putri karkaṭike rakṣaḥkulaśailābhramālike ,
uttiṣṭha tvaṃ tu tuṣṭo'smi gṛhāṇābhimataṃ varam 7
7. brahmā uvāca putri karkaṭike rakṣaḥkulaśailābhrāmālike
uttiṣṭha tvam tu tuṣṭaḥ asmi gṛhāṇa abhimatam varam
7. brahmā uvāca putri karkaṭike rakṣaḥkulaśailābhrāmālike
tvam uttiṣṭha tu asmi tuṣṭaḥ abhimatam varam gṛhāṇa
7. Brahmā said: "O daughter Karkaṭī, O you who are like a garland of clouds over the mountain of the Rākṣasa family! Arise! Indeed, I am pleased (with you). Accept the boon you desire."
कर्कट्युवाच ।
भगवन्भूतभव्येश स्यामहं जीवसूचिका ।
अनायसी चायसी च विधेऽर्पयसि चेद्वरम् ॥ ८ ॥
karkaṭyuvāca ,
bhagavanbhūtabhavyeśa syāmahaṃ jīvasūcikā ,
anāyasī cāyasī ca vidhe'rpayasi cedvaram 8
8. karkaṭī uvāca bhagavan bhūtabhavyeśa syām aham
jīvasūcikā anāyasī ca āyasī ca vidhe arpayasi cet varam
8. karkaṭī uvāca bhagavan bhūtabhavyeśa vidhe cet varam
arpayasi aham anāyasī ca āyasī ca jīvasūcikā syām
8. Karkaṭī said: "O Lord (bhagavan), O Master of past and future, O Creator (Vidhi), if you grant me a boon, may I become a needle for living beings (jīvasūcikā), (one that is) both non-iron and iron."
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
एवमस्त्विति तामुक्त्वा पुनराह पितामहः ।
सूचिका सोपसर्गा त्वं भविष्यसि विषूचिका ॥ ९ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
evamastviti tāmuktvā punarāha pitāmahaḥ ,
sūcikā sopasargā tvaṃ bhaviṣyasi viṣūcikā 9
9. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca evam astu iti tām uktvā punaḥ āha
pitāmahaḥ sūcikā sopasargā tvam bhaviṣyasi viṣūcikā
9. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca pitāmahaḥ evam astu iti tām uktvā
punaḥ āha tvam sūcikā sopasargā viṣūcikā bhaviṣyasi
9. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having assented to her with "So be it!" (evam astu), the Grandfather (Brahmā) further said: "You, O needle, will become a needle with affliction (sopasargā), (which is also known as) viṣūcikā (cholera/epidemic)."
सूक्ष्मया मायया सर्वलोकहिंसां करिष्यसि ।
दुर्भोजना दुरारम्भा मूर्खा दुःस्थितयश्च ये ॥ १० ॥
sūkṣmayā māyayā sarvalokahiṃsāṃ kariṣyasi ,
durbhojanā durārambhā mūrkhā duḥsthitayaśca ye 10
10. sūkṣmayā māyayā sarvalokahiṃsām kariṣyasi
durbhojanāḥ durārambhāḥ mūrkhāḥ duḥsthitayaḥ ca ye
10. sūkṣmayā māyayā sarvalokahiṃsām kariṣyasi ye
durbhojanāḥ durārambhāḥ mūrkhāḥ duḥsthitayaḥ ca
10. Through a subtle illusion (māyā), you will inflict harm upon all people, especially those who consume bad food, engage in unfortunate ventures, are foolish, and are in distressful conditions.
दुर्देशवासिनो दुष्टास्तेषां हिंसां करिष्यसि ।
प्रविश्याऽऽहृदयं प्राणैः पद्मप्लीहादिबाधनात् ॥ ११ ॥
durdeśavāsino duṣṭāsteṣāṃ hiṃsāṃ kariṣyasi ,
praviśyā''hṛdayaṃ prāṇaiḥ padmaplīhādibādhanāt 11
11. durdeśavāsinaḥ duṣṭāḥ teṣām hiṃsām kariṣyasi
praviśya āhṛdayam prāṇaiḥ padmaplīhādibādhanāt
11. दुर्देशवासिनः दुष्टाः तेषाम् हिंसां करिष्यसि
प्राणैः आहृदयम् प्रविश्य पद्मप्लीहादिबाधनात्
11. You will inflict harm upon those wicked individuals who reside in undesirable places. This will be done by entering their hearts through the vital breaths (prāṇas) and afflicting organs like the lotus-shaped spleen and others.
वातलेखात्मिका व्याधिर्भविष्यसि विषूचिका ।
सगुणं विगुणं चैव जनमासादयिष्यसि ॥ १२ ॥
vātalekhātmikā vyādhirbhaviṣyasi viṣūcikā ,
saguṇaṃ viguṇaṃ caiva janamāsādayiṣyasi 12
12. vātarekhātmikā vyādhiḥ bhaviṣyasi viṣūcikā
saguṇam viguṇam ca eva janam āsādayiṣyasi
12. (त्वम्) वातलेखात्मिका व्याधिः विषूचिका भविष्यसि(त्वम्) सगुणम् विगुणं च एव जनम् आसादयिष्यसि।
12. You will manifest as the disease viṣūcikā, characterized by wind disturbances. You will certainly affect people, both those possessing good qualities and those lacking them.
गुणान्वितचिकित्सार्थं मन्त्रोऽयं तु मयोच्यते ।
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
हिमाद्रेरुत्तरे पार्श्वे कर्कटी नाम राक्षसी ॥ १३ ॥
guṇānvitacikitsārthaṃ mantro'yaṃ tu mayocyate ,
brahmovāca ,
himādreruttare pārśve karkaṭī nāma rākṣasī 13
13. guṇānvitacikitsārtham mantraḥ ayam tu mayā ucyate brahmā
uvāca himādreḥ uttare pārśve karkaṭī nāma rākṣasī
13. गुणान्वितचिकित्सार्थम् अयम् मन्त्रः तु मया उच्यतेब्रह्मा उवाचहिमाद्रेः उत्तरे पार्श्वे कर्कटी नाम राक्षसी (अस्ति)।
13. Indeed, this incantation (mantra) for the treatment of virtuous individuals is being recited by me. Brahmā said: 'On the northern side of the Himālayas resides an ogress named Karkaṭī.'
विषूचिकाभिधाना सा नाम्नाप्यन्यायबाधिका ।
तस्या मन्त्रः ।
ॐह्रींह्रांरींरां विष्णुशक्तये नमः ।
ॐनमो भगवति विष्णुशक्तिमेनां ॐहरहर नयनय पचपच मथमथ उत्सादय दूरेकुरु स्वाहा हिमवन्तं गच्छ जीव सः सः सः चन्द्रमण्डलगतोऽसि स्वाहा ।
इति मन्त्री महामन्त्रं न्यस्य वामकरोदरे ।
मार्जयेदातुराकारं तेन हस्तेन संयुतः ॥ १४ ॥
viṣūcikābhidhānā sā nāmnāpyanyāyabādhikā ,
tasyā mantraḥ ,
oṃhrīṃhrāṃrīṃrāṃ viṣṇuśaktaye namaḥ ,
oṃnamo bhagavati viṣṇuśaktimenāṃ oṃharahara nayanaya pacapaca mathamatha utsādaya dūrekuru svāhā himavantaṃ gaccha jīva saḥ saḥ saḥ candramaṇḍalagato'si svāhā ,
iti mantrī mahāmantraṃ nyasya vāmakarodare ,
mārjayedāturākāraṃ tena hastena saṃyutaḥ 14
14. viṣūcikā-abhidhānā sā nāmnā api anyāya-bādhikā / tasyā mantraḥ / oṃ hrīṃ hrāṃ rīṃ rāṃ viṣṇu-śaktaye
namaḥ / oṃ namo bhagavati viṣṇu-śaktim enām oṃ hara hara naya naya paca paca matha matha
utsāday dūre kuru svāhā himavantaṃ gaccha jīva saḥ saḥ saḥ candra-maṇḍala-gataḥ asi svāhā / iti
mantrī mahā-mantraṃ nyasya vāma-kara-udare / mārjayet ātura-ākāram tena hastena saṃyutaḥ // 14 //
14. sā viṣūcikā-abhidhānā nāmnā api anyāya-bādhikā (asti) / tasyā mantraḥ (ayam) / oṃ hrīṃ hrāṃ rīṃ rāṃ
viṣṇu-śaktaye namaḥ / oṃ namo bhagavati viṣṇu-śaktim enām oṃ hara hara naya naya paca paca matha
matha utsāday dūre kuru svāhā himavantaṃ gaccha jīva saḥ saḥ saḥ candra-maṇḍala-gataḥ asi svāhā /
iti mantrī mahā-mantraṃ vāma-kara-udare nyasya tena hastena saṃyutaḥ ātura-ākāram mārjayet // 14 //
14. That (disease) named "viṣūcikā" (cholera) is obstructive even by its name. Its mantra (is as follows): Om Hrīṃ Hrāṃ Rīṃ Rāṃ, salutations to Viṣṇu's power (śakti)! Om salutations to the divine "Viṣṇuśakti", this (disease)! Om, take away, take away! Lead away, lead away! Burn up, burn up! Destroy, destroy! Eradicate! Send far away, "svāhā"! Go to the Himalayas! Live, he, he, he! You are situated in the lunar sphere, "svāhā"! Thus, the practitioner (mantrī), having placed this great mantra (mahāmantra) on the palm of their left hand, should, together with that hand, rub the form of the patient.
हिमशैलाभिमुख्येन विद्रुतां तां विचिन्तयेत् ।
कर्कटीकर्कशाक्रन्दां मन्त्रमुद्गरमर्दिताम् ॥ १५ ॥
himaśailābhimukhyena vidrutāṃ tāṃ vicintayet ,
karkaṭīkarkaśākrandāṃ mantramudgaramarditām 15
15. hima-śaila-abhimukhyena vidrutām tām vicintayet /
karkaṭī-karkaśa-ākrandām mantra-mudgara-marditām // 15 //
15. (saḥ) tām hima-śaila-abhimukhyena vidrutām karkaṭī-karkaśa-ākrandām
mantra-mudgara-marditām (ca) vicintayet // 15 //
15. One should visualize her (the disease) as having fled towards the Himalayas (himaśaila), crying out harshly like a crab, and crushed by the mantra-mace.
आतुरं चिन्तयेच्चन्द्रे रसायनहृदि स्थितम् ।
अजरामरणं युक्तं मुक्तं सर्वाधिविभ्रमैः ॥ १६ ॥
āturaṃ cintayeccandre rasāyanahṛdi sthitam ,
ajarāmaraṇaṃ yuktaṃ muktaṃ sarvādhivibhramaiḥ 16
16. āturam cintayet candre rasāyana-hṛdi sthitam /
ajara-amaraṇam yuktam muktam sarva-ādhi-vibhramaiḥ // 16 //
16. (saḥ) candre rasāyana-hṛdi sthitam ajara-amaraṇam
sarva-ādhi-vibhramaiḥ muktam yuktam āturam (iti) cintayet // 16 //
16. One should meditate upon the patient (ātura) as being in the moon, situated within the heart of the elixir (rasāyana), free from old age and death, endowed with (health), and liberated from all mental afflictions (ādhi) and delusions.
साधको हि शुचिर्भूत्वा स्वाचान्तः सुसमाहितः ।
क्रमेणानेन सकलां प्रोच्छिनत्ति विषूचिकाम् ॥ १७ ॥
sādhako hi śucirbhūtvā svācāntaḥ susamāhitaḥ ,
krameṇānena sakalāṃ procchinatti viṣūcikām 17
17. sādhakaḥ hi śuciḥ bhūtvā sva-ācāntaḥ su-samāhitaḥ /
krameṇa anena sakalām pro-ucchīnatti viṣūcikām // 17 //
17. sādhakaḥ hi śuciḥ bhūtvā sva-ācāntaḥ su-samāhitaḥ
anena krameṇa sakalām viṣūcikām pro-ucchīnatti // 17 //
17. Indeed, the practitioner (sādhaka), having become pure, having performed self-purification with water (ācamana), and being well-concentrated, eradicates the entire "viṣūcikā" (cholera) by this method.
इति गगनगतस्त्रिलोकनाथो गगनगसिद्धग्रहीतसिद्धमन्त्रः ।
गत उपगतशक्रवन्द्यमानो निजपुरमक्षयमायमुज्ज्वलश्रीः ॥ १८ ॥
iti gaganagatastrilokanātho gaganagasiddhagrahītasiddhamantraḥ ,
gata upagataśakravandyamāno nijapuramakṣayamāyamujjvalaśrīḥ 18
18. iti gagana-gataḥ tri-loka-nāthaḥ
gagana-ga-siddha-grahīta-siddha-mantraḥ
gataḥ upagata-śakra-vandyamānaḥ
nija-puram akṣayam āyam ujjvala-śrīḥ
18. iti tri-loka-nāthaḥ gagana-gataḥ
gagana-ga-siddha-grahīta-siddha-mantraḥ
upagata-śakra-vandyamānaḥ ujjvala-śrīḥ
akṣayam āyam nija-puram gataḥ
18. Thus, the lord of the three worlds, moving through the sky, whose perfected incantations (mantra) were grasped by the sky-dwelling perfected beings (siddha), departed. Approached and worshipped by Indra (śakra), he, possessing brilliant splendor, reached his imperishable, prosperous abode.
