अपर्याप्तं हि बालत्वं बलात्पिबति यौवनम् ।
यौवनं च जरा पश्चात्पश्य कर्कशतां मिथः ॥ १ ॥
śrīrāma uvāca ,
aparyāptaṃ hi bālatvaṃ balātpibati yauvanam ,
yauvanaṃ ca jarā paścātpaśya karkaśatāṃ mithaḥ 1

1. Śrī Rāma said: Childhood, indeed, is all too brief, yet youth forcibly consumes it. And then, old age subsequently devours youth. Behold the harshness they mutually inflict!
हिमाशनिरिवाम्भोजं वात्येव शरदम्बुकम् ।
देहं जरा नाशयति नदी तीरतरुं यथा ॥ २ ॥
himāśanirivāmbhojaṃ vātyeva śaradambukam ,
dehaṃ jarā nāśayati nadī tīrataruṃ yathā 2
2. himāśaniḥ iva ambhojam vāti iva śarad ambukam
deham jarā nāśayati nadī tīra-tarum yathā
2. jarā deham nāśayati himāśaniḥ iva ambhojam,
śarad ambukam vāti iva,
nadī tīra-tarum yathā
2. Just as a hailstone destroys a lotus, or a strong wind disperses autumn clouds, and just as a river erodes a tree on its bank, so too does old age destroy the body.
जर्जरीकृतसर्वाङ्गी जरा जरठरूपिणी ।
विरूपतां नयत्याशु देहं विषलवो यथा ॥ ३ ॥
jarjarīkṛtasarvāṅgī jarā jaraṭharūpiṇī ,
virūpatāṃ nayatyāśu dehaṃ viṣalavo yathā 3
3. jarjarī-kṛta-sarvāṅgī jarā jaraṭha-rūpiṇī
virūpatām nayati āśu deham viṣa-lavaḥ yathā
3. jarjarī-kṛta-sarvāṅgī jaraṭha-rūpiṇī jarā
viṣa-lavaḥ yathā deham āśu virūpatām nayati
3. Old age, which makes all limbs decrepit and assumes a withered form, quickly brings disfigurement to the body, just as a drop of poison does.
शिथिलादीर्णसर्वाङ्गं जराजीर्णकलेवरम् ।
समं पश्यन्ति कामिन्यः पुरुषं करभं यथा ॥ ४ ॥
śithilādīrṇasarvāṅgaṃ jarājīrṇakalevaram ,
samaṃ paśyanti kāminyaḥ puruṣaṃ karabhaṃ yathā 4
4. śithila-adīrṇa-sarvāṅgam jarā-jīrṇa-kalevaram
samam paśyanti kāminyaḥ puruṣam karabham yathā
4. kāminyaḥ śithila-adīrṇa-sarvāṅgam jarā-jīrṇa-kalevaram
puruṣam karabham yathā samam paśyanti
4. Desirous women view a man whose entire body is loosened and decaying, whose physique is worn out by old age, with the same disdain as they would a camel.
अनायासकदर्थिन्या गृहीते जरसा जने ।
पलाय्य गच्छति प्रज्ञा सपत्न्येवाहताङ्गना ॥ ५ ॥
anāyāsakadarthinyā gṛhīte jarasā jane ,
palāyya gacchati prajñā sapatnyevāhatāṅganā 5
5. anāyāsa-kadarthinyā gṛhīte jarasā jane palāyya
gacchati prajñā sapatnyā iva āhata-aṅganā
5. anāyāsa-kadarthinyā jarasā jane gṛhīte (sati),
prajñā sapatnyā āhata-aṅganā iva palāyya gacchati
5. When a person is seized by old age, that effortless tormentor, wisdom (prajñā) flees, just like a woman who has been beaten by her co-wife.
दासाः पुत्राः स्त्रियश्चैव बान्धवाः सुहृदस्तथा ।
हसन्त्युन्मत्तकमिव नरं वार्धककम्पितम् ॥ ६ ॥
dāsāḥ putrāḥ striyaścaiva bāndhavāḥ suhṛdastathā ,
hasantyunmattakamiva naraṃ vārdhakakampitam 6
6. dāsāḥ putrāḥ striyaḥ ca eva bāndhavāḥ suhṛdaḥ
tathā hasanti unmattakam iva naram vārdhakakampitam
6. dāsāḥ putrāḥ striyaḥ ca eva bāndhavāḥ suhṛdaḥ
tathā vārdhakakampitam naram unmattakam iva hasanti
6. Servants, sons, wives, relatives, and friends alike laugh at a man who is trembling due to old age, just as they would laugh at a madman.
दुष्प्रेक्ष्यं जरठं दीनं हीनं गुणपराक्रमैः ।
गृध्रो वृक्षमिवादीर्घं गर्धो ह्यभ्येति वृद्धकम् ॥ ७ ॥
duṣprekṣyaṃ jaraṭhaṃ dīnaṃ hīnaṃ guṇaparākramaiḥ ,
gṛdhro vṛkṣamivādīrghaṃ gardho hyabhyeti vṛddhakam 7
7. duṣprekṣyam jaraṭham dīnam hīnam guṇaparākramaiḥ
gṛdhraḥ vṛkṣam iva adīrgham gardhaḥ hi abhyeti vṛddhakam
7. hi gardhaḥ duṣprekṣyam jaraṭham dīnam hīnam guṇaparākramaiḥ
vṛddhakam gṛdhraḥ adīrgham vṛkṣam iva abhyeti
7. Indeed, a predatory greed (gardha) approaches an old man (vṛddhakam) who is unsightly, decrepit, miserable, and lacking in good qualities and valor, just as a vulture approaches a barren or decaying tree.
दैन्यदोषमयी दीर्घा हृदि दाहप्रदायिनी ।
सर्वापदामेकसखी वार्धके वर्धते स्पृहा ॥ ८ ॥
dainyadoṣamayī dīrghā hṛdi dāhapradāyinī ,
sarvāpadāmekasakhī vārdhake vardhate spṛhā 8
8. dainyadoṣamayī dīrghā hṛdi dāhapradāyinī
sarvāpadām ekasakhī vārdhake vardhate spṛhā
8. vārdhake dainyadoṣamayī dīrghā hṛdi
dāhapradāyinī sarvāpadām ekasakhī spṛhā vardhate
8. In old age (vārdhake), a longing (spṛhā) increases that is rife with the flaws of wretchedness, far-reaching, causes anguish in the heart, and becomes the sole companion of all misfortunes.
कर्तव्यं किं मया कष्टं परत्रेत्यतिदारुणम् ।
अप्रतीकारयोग्यं हि वर्धते वार्धके भयम् ॥ ९ ॥
kartavyaṃ kiṃ mayā kaṣṭaṃ paratretyatidāruṇam ,
apratīkārayogyaṃ hi vardhate vārdhake bhayam 9
9. kartavyam kim mayā kaṣṭam paratra iti atidāruṇam
apratīkārayogyam hi vardhate vārdhake bhayam
9. hi vārdhake atidāruṇam apratīkārayogyam bhayam
"kartavyam kim mayā kaṣṭam paratra" iti vardhate
9. Indeed, in old age (vārdhake), an extremely terrible and irremediable fear (bhayam) increases, (manifesting as the thought): "What painful (karma) must I do for the next world (paratra)?"
कोऽहं वराकः किमिव करोमि कथमेव च ।
तिष्ठामि मौनमेवेति दीनतोदेति वार्धके ॥ १० ॥
ko'haṃ varākaḥ kimiva karomi kathameva ca ,
tiṣṭhāmi maunameveti dīnatodeti vārdhake 10
10. kaḥ aham varākaḥ kim iva karomi katham eva ca
tiṣṭhāmi maunam eva iti dīnatā udeti vārdhake
10. aham varākaḥ kaḥ kim iva karomi ca katham eva
maunam eva tiṣṭhāmi iti dīnatā vārdhake udeti
10. Who am I, a wretched being? What indeed can I do? And how can I simply remain silent? Thus, helplessness arises in old age.
कथं कदा मे किमिव स्वादु स्याद्भोजनं जनात् ।
इत्यजस्रं जरा चैषा चेतो दहति वार्धके ॥ ११ ॥
kathaṃ kadā me kimiva svādu syādbhojanaṃ janāt ,
ityajasraṃ jarā caiṣā ceto dahati vārdhake 11
11. katham kadā me kim iva svādu syāt bhojanam janāt
iti ajasram jarā ca eṣā cetaḥ dahati vārdhake
11. katham kadā me janāt kim iva svādu bhojanam syāt
iti ajasram eṣā ca jarā vārdhake cetaḥ dahati
11. How and when will I ever have tasty food from people? Thus, this old age (jarā) constantly burns the mind (cetas) in old age (vārdhaka).
गर्धोऽभ्युदेति सोल्लासमुपभोक्तुं न शक्यते ।
हृदयं दह्यते नूनं शक्तिदौस्थ्येन वार्धके ॥ १२ ॥
gardho'bhyudeti sollāsamupabhoktuṃ na śakyate ,
hṛdayaṃ dahyate nūnaṃ śaktidausthyena vārdhake 12
12. gardhaḥ abhyudeti saullāsam upabhoktum na śakyate
hṛdayam dahyate nūnam śakti-dausthyena vārdhake
12. gardhaḥ saullāsam abhyudeti upabhoktum na śakyate
nūnam hṛdayam śakti-dausthyena vārdhake dahyate
12. Greed (gardha) arises with delight, yet it cannot be enjoyed. Surely, the heart (hṛdaya) is burned by the weakness (dausthya) of strength (śakti) in old age (vārdhaka).
जराजीर्णबकी यावत्कायक्लेशापकारिणी ।
रौति रोगोरगाकीर्णा कायद्रुमशिरःस्थिता ॥ १३ ॥
jarājīrṇabakī yāvatkāyakleśāpakāriṇī ,
rauti rogoragākīrṇā kāyadrumaśiraḥsthitā 13
13. jarā-jīrṇa-bakī yāvat kāya-kleśa-apakāriṇī
rauti roga-uraga-ākīrṇā kāya-druma-śiraḥ-sthitā
13. jarā-jīrṇa-bakī yāvat kāya-kleśa-apakāriṇī
roga-uraga-ākīrṇā kāya-druma-śiraḥ-sthitā rauti
13. The crane, withered by old age (jarā), which continuously causes bodily afflictions (kāyakleśa), cries out, infested by disease-snakes (rogoraga) and perched at the top of the body-tree (kāyadrumaśiraḥ).
तावदागत एवाशु कुतोऽपि परिदृश्यते ।
घनान्ध्यतिमिराकाङ्क्षी मुने मरणकौशिकः ॥ १४ ॥
tāvadāgata evāśu kuto'pi paridṛśyate ,
ghanāndhyatimirākāṅkṣī mune maraṇakauśikaḥ 14
14. tāvat āgataḥ eva āśu kutaḥ api paridṛśyate
ghanāndhya-timira-ākaṅkṣī mune maraṇa-kauśikaḥ
14. mune tāvat kutaḥ api ghanāndhya-timira-ākaṅkṣī
maraṇa-kauśikaḥ eva āśu āgataḥ paridṛśyate
14. O sage, at that very moment, the owl of death, desirous of dense, blinding darkness, swiftly appears from somewhere.
सायंसंध्यां प्रजातां वै तमः समनुधावति ।
जरां वपुषि दृष्ट्वैव मृतिः समनुधावति ॥ १५ ॥
sāyaṃsaṃdhyāṃ prajātāṃ vai tamaḥ samanudhāvati ,
jarāṃ vapuṣi dṛṣṭvaiva mṛtiḥ samanudhāvati 15
15. sāyaṃ-saṃdhyām prajātām vai tamaḥ samanudhavati
jarām vapuṣi dṛṣṭvā eva mṛtiḥ samanudhavati
15. vai prajātām sāyaṃ-saṃdhyām tamaḥ samanudhavati (yathā),
(tathā) vapuṣi jarām dṛṣṭvā eva mṛtiḥ samanudhavati
15. Indeed, darkness closely follows the arisen evening twilight. Similarly, death closely follows upon seeing old age in the body.
जराकुसुमितं देहद्रुमं दृष्ट्वैव दूरतः ।
अध्यापतति वेगेन मुने मरणमर्कटः ॥ १६ ॥
jarākusumitaṃ dehadrumaṃ dṛṣṭvaiva dūrataḥ ,
adhyāpatati vegena mune maraṇamarkaṭaḥ 16
16. jarā-kusumitam deha-drumam dṛṣṭvā eva dūrataḥ
adhyāpatati vegena mune maraṇa-markaṭaḥ
16. mune jarā-kusumitam deha-drumam dūrataḥ
dṛṣṭvā eva maraṇa-markaṭaḥ vegena adhyāpatati
16. O sage, upon merely seeing the body-tree, which is blooming with old age, from a distance, the monkey of death swiftly swoops down.
शून्यं नगरमाभाति भाति च्छिन्नलतो द्रुमः ।
भात्यनावृष्टिमान्देशो न जराजर्जरं वपुः ॥ १७ ॥
śūnyaṃ nagaramābhāti bhāti cchinnalato drumaḥ ,
bhātyanāvṛṣṭimāndeśo na jarājarjaraṃ vapuḥ 17
17. śūnyam nagaram ābhāti bhāti chinna-lataḥ drumaḥ
bhāti anāvṛṣṭimān deśaḥ na jarā-jarjaram vapuḥ
17. śūnyam nagaram ābhāti; chinna-lataḥ drumaḥ bhāti; anāvṛṣṭimān
deśaḥ bhāti; (kintu) jarā-jarjaram vapuḥ na (bhāti)
17. An empty city appears desolate, a tree with severed creepers looks dismal, and a drought-stricken land appears bleak – but a body worn out by old age does not (shine or appear to have any vibrancy).
क्षणान्निगरणायैव कासक्वणितकारिणी ।
गृध्रीवामिषमादत्ते तरसैव नरं जरा ॥ १८ ॥
kṣaṇānnigaraṇāyaiva kāsakvaṇitakāriṇī ,
gṛdhrīvāmiṣamādatte tarasaiva naraṃ jarā 18
18. kṣaṇāt nigaraṇāya eva kāsakvaṇitakāriṇī gṛdhrī
iva āmiṣam ādatte tarasā eva naram jarā
18. jarā kāsakvaṇitakāriṇī gṛdhrī iva,
āmiṣam nigaraṇāya eva,
naram tarasā eva kṣaṇāt ādatte
18. Just as a female vulture, making a crackling sound, seizes its prey (flesh) instantly just for swallowing, so too does old age swiftly overpower a man.
दृष्ट्वैव सोत्सुकेवाशु प्रगृह्य शिरसि क्षणम् ।
प्रलुनाति जरा देहं कुमारी कैरवं यथा ॥ १९ ॥
dṛṣṭvaiva sotsukevāśu pragṛhya śirasi kṣaṇam ,
pralunāti jarā dehaṃ kumārī kairavaṃ yathā 19
19. dṛṣṭvā eva sa-utsukā iva āśu pragṛhya śirasi
kṣaṇam pralunāti jarā deham kumārī kairavam yathā
19. jarā,
kumārī kairavam yathā (pralunāti),
[tathā] dṛṣṭvā eva,
sa-utsukā iva,
āśu,
kṣaṇam śirasi pragṛhya,
deham pralunāti
19. Just as a young girl, having quickly spotted a water lily and eagerly seized its head for a moment, plucks it, so too does old age swiftly tear apart the body after merely seeing it.
सीत्कारकारिणी पांसुपरुषा परिजर्जरम् ।
शरीरं शातयत्येषा वात्येव तरुपल्लवम् ॥ २० ॥
sītkārakāriṇī pāṃsuparuṣā parijarjaram ,
śarīraṃ śātayatyeṣā vātyeva tarupallavam 20
20. sītkārakāriṇī pāṃsuparuṣā parijarjaram
śarīram śātayati eṣā vātyā iva tarupallavam
20. eṣā (jarā) sītkārakāriṇī,
pāṃsuparuṣā [satī],
vātyā iva,
tarupallavam (yathā śātayati),
[tathā] parijarjaram śarīram śātayati
20. This (old age), which produces a whistling sound and is rough with dust, destroys the body, making it completely decrepit, just as a whirlwind tears apart the foliage of a tree.
जरसोपहतो देहो धत्ते जर्जरतां गतः ।
तुषारनिकराकीर्णपरिम्लानाम्बुजश्रियम् ॥ २१ ॥
jarasopahato deho dhatte jarjaratāṃ gataḥ ,
tuṣāranikarākīrṇaparimlānāmbujaśriyam 21
21. jarasā upahataḥ dehaḥ dhatte jarjaratām
gataḥ tuṣāranikarakīrṇaparimlānāmbujyaśriyam
21. jarasā upahataḥ,
jarjaratām gataḥ dehaḥ,
tuṣāranikarakīrṇaparimlānāmbujyaśriyam dhatte
21. The body, afflicted by old age (jarā) and having reached a state of decrepitude, takes on the faded beauty of a lotus covered and withered by a mass of hoarfrost.
जरा ज्योत्स्नोदितैवेयं शिरःशिखरिपृष्ठतः ।
विकासयति संरब्धं वातकासकुमुद्वती ॥ २२ ॥
jarā jyotsnoditaiveyaṃ śiraḥśikharipṛṣṭhataḥ ,
vikāsayati saṃrabdhaṃ vātakāsakumudvatī 22
22. jarā jyotsnā uditā eva iyam śiraḥśikhari-pṛṣṭhataḥ
vikāsayati saṃrabdham vātakāsa-kumudvatī
22. iyam jarā śiraḥśikhari-pṛṣṭhataḥ uditā jyotsnā
iva saṃrabdham vātakāsa-kumudvatī vikāsayati
22. Old age (jarā) is like the rising moonlight which, emerging from behind the peak of the head, vigorously causes the night-blooming water-lilies of cough and other wind-related ailments to blossom.
परिपक्वं समालोक्य जराक्षारविधूसरम् ।
शिरःकूष्माण्डकं भुङ्क्ते पुंसां कालः किलेश्वरः ॥ २३ ॥
paripakvaṃ samālokya jarākṣāravidhūsaram ,
śiraḥkūṣmāṇḍakaṃ bhuṅkte puṃsāṃ kālaḥ kileśvaraḥ 23
23. paripakvam samālokya jarākṣāravidhūsaram |
śiraḥkūṣmāṇḍakam bhuṅkte puṃsām kālaḥ kila īśvaraḥ ||
23. kila kālaḥ puṃsām īśvaraḥ,
jarākṣāravidhūsaram paripakvam śiraḥkūṣmāṇḍakam samālokya (kālaḥ) bhuṅkte.
23. Indeed, Time (kāla) is the lord (īśvara) of people. Having observed the head, which is like a gourd (kūṣmāṇḍaka) fully ripened and grayed by the corrosive effects of old age (jarā), Time (kāla) consumes it.
जराजह्नुसुतोद्युक्ता मूलान्यस्य निकृन्तति ।
शरीरतीरवृक्षस्य चलत्यायुषि सत्वरम् ॥ २४ ॥
jarājahnusutodyuktā mūlānyasya nikṛntati ,
śarīratīravṛkṣasya calatyāyuṣi satvaram 24
24. jarā jahnusutā-udyuktā mūlāni asya nikṛntati
| śarīratīravṛkṣasya calati āyuṣi satvaram ||
24. āyuṣi satvaram calati (sati),
jarā jahnusutā-udyuktā asya śarīratīravṛkṣasya mūlāni nikṛntati.
24. Old age (jarā), active like the daughter of Jahnu (Ganga), swiftly cuts off the roots of this body, which is like a tree standing on a riverbank, as one's life (āyus) rapidly moves towards its end.
जरामार्जारिका भुङ्क्ते यौवनाखुं तथोद्धता ।
परमुल्लासमायाति शरीरामिषगर्धिनी ॥ २५ ॥
jarāmārjārikā bhuṅkte yauvanākhuṃ tathoddhatā ,
paramullāsamāyāti śarīrāmiṣagardhinī 25
25. jarāmārjārikā bhuṅkte yauvanākhum tathā uddhatā
| param ullāsam āyāti śarīrāmiṣagardhinī ||
25. tathā uddhatā jarāmārjārikā yauvanākhum bhuṅkte.
śarīrāmiṣagardhinī (sā) param ullāsam āyāti.
25. Old age (jarā), like a fierce female cat (mārjārikā), thus devours the mouse of youth. She attains supreme delight, being greedy for the body's flesh.
काचिदस्ति जगत्यस्मिन्नामङ्गलकरी तथा ।
यथा जराक्रोशकरी देहजङ्गलजम्बुकी ॥ २६ ॥
kācidasti jagatyasminnāmaṅgalakarī tathā ,
yathā jarākrośakarī dehajaṅgalajambukī 26
26. kācit asti jagati asmin na amaṅgalakarī tathā
| yathā jarā āśrośakarī deha-jaṅgala-jambukī ||
26. asmin jagati kācit tathā amaṅgalakarī na asti
yathā deha-jaṅgala-jambukī jarā āśrośakarī
26. In this world, there is nothing as inauspicious as old age (jarā), which causes lamentation and is like a female jackal in the jungle of the body.
कासश्वासससीत्कारा दुःखधूमतमोमयी ।
जराज्वाला ज्वलत्येषा यस्यासौ दग्ध एव हि ॥ २७ ॥
kāsaśvāsasasītkārā duḥkhadhūmatamomayī ,
jarājvālā jvalatyeṣā yasyāsau dagdha eva hi 27
27. kāsa-śvāsa-sa-sītkārā duḥkha-dhūma-tamomayī |
jarā-jvālā jvalati eṣā yasya asau dagdhaḥ eva hi ||
27. eṣā kāsa-śvāsa-sa-sītkārā duḥkha-dhūma-tamomayī
jarā-jvālā jvalati; yasya asau dagdhaḥ eva hi
27. This flame of old age (jarā), accompanied by coughing, gasping, and wheezing, and consisting of the smoke of suffering and darkness, burns fiercely; indeed, he whose body is touched by it is burnt.
जरसा वक्रतामेति शुक्लावयवपल्लवा ।
तात तन्वी तनुर्नृणां लता पुष्पानता यथा ॥ २८ ॥
jarasā vakratāmeti śuklāvayavapallavā ,
tāta tanvī tanurnṛṇāṃ latā puṣpānatā yathā 28
28. jarasā vakratām eti śukla-avayava-pallavā | tāta
tanvī tanuḥ nṛṇām latā puṣpa-ānatā yathā ||
28. tāta! nṛṇām tanvī śukla-avayava-pallavā tanuḥ jarasā vakratām eti,
yathā puṣpa-ānatā latā [eti]
28. O dear father, just as a slender creeper bends low laden with flowers, so too does the slender body of men become crooked by old age (jarā), with its limbs like white shoots.
जराकर्पूरधवलं देहकर्पूरपादपम् ।
मुने मरणमातङ्गो नूनमुद्धरति क्षणात् ॥ २९ ॥
jarākarpūradhavalaṃ dehakarpūrapādapam ,
mune maraṇamātaṅgo nūnamuddharati kṣaṇāt 29
29. jarā-karpūra-dhavalam deha-karpūra-pādapam |
mune maraṇa-mātaṅgaḥ nūnam uddharati kṣaṇāt ||
29. mune! maraṇa-mātaṅgaḥ nūnam kṣaṇāt
jarā-karpūra-dhavalam deha-karpūra-pādapam uddharati
29. O sage, the elephant of death (maraṇa) certainly uproots in a moment the body, which is like a camphor tree, made white and pale by the camphor of old age (jarā).
मरणस्य मुने राज्ञो जराधवलचामरा ।
आगच्छतोऽग्रे निर्याति स्वाधिव्याधिपताकिनी ॥ ३० ॥
maraṇasya mune rājño jarādhavalacāmarā ,
āgacchato'gre niryāti svādhivyādhipatākinī 30
30. maraṇasya mune rājñaḥ jarādhavalacāmarā
āgacchataḥ agre niryāti svādhivyādhipatākinī
30. mune maraṇasya rājñaḥ āgacchataḥ agre
jarādhavalacāmarā svādhivyādhipatākinī niryāti
30. Oh sage, when the king of death approaches, old age (jarā), bearing white fly-whisks (like white hair), advances before him, accompanied by his army carrying the banners of mental anguish (ādhi) and physical diseases (vyādhi).
न जिताः शत्रुभिः संख्ये प्रविष्टा येऽद्रिकोटरे ।
ते जराजीर्णराक्षस्या पश्याशु विजिता मुने ॥ ३१ ॥
na jitāḥ śatrubhiḥ saṃkhye praviṣṭā ye'drikoṭare ,
te jarājīrṇarākṣasyā paśyāśu vijitā mune 31
31. na jitāḥ śatrubhiḥ saṅkhye praviṣṭāḥ ye adrikoṭare
te jarājīrṇarākṣasyā paśya āśu vijitāḥ mune
31. mune paśya ye śatrubhiḥ saṅkhye na jitāḥ,
adrikoṭare praviṣṭāḥ te jarājīrṇarākṣasyā āśu vijitāḥ
31. O sage, behold! Those who were not conquered by enemies in battle, even when they entered mountain caves, are swiftly vanquished by the decrepit female demon (rākṣasī) of old age (jarā).
जरातुषारवलिते शरीरसदनान्तरे ।
शक्नुवन्त्यक्षशिशवः स्पन्दितुं न मनागपि ॥ ३२ ॥
jarātuṣāravalite śarīrasadanāntare ,
śaknuvantyakṣaśiśavaḥ spandituṃ na manāgapi 32

akṣaśiśavaḥ spanditum na manāk api

32. Within the dwelling (sadana) of the body, which is covered by the hoarfrost of old age (jarā), the sense-infants (the senses) are unable to stir even a little.
दण्डतृतीयपादेन प्रस्खलन्ती मुहुर्मुहुः ।
कासाधोवायुमुरजा जरा योषित्प्रनृत्यति ॥ ३३ ॥
daṇḍatṛtīyapādena praskhalantī muhurmuhuḥ ,
kāsādhovāyumurajā jarā yoṣitpranṛtyati 33
33. daṇḍatṛtīyapādena praskhalantī muhurmuhuḥ
kāsādovāyumurajā jarā yoṣit pranṛtyati
33. jarā yoṣit daṇḍatṛtīyapādena muhurmuhuḥ

33. Old age (jarā), personified as a woman, dances, stumbling repeatedly and leaning on a staff as her third leg, with her coughs and flatulence serving as her drums (muraja).
संसारसंसृतेरस्या गन्धकुट्यां शिरोगता ।
देहयष्ट्यां जरानाम्नी चामरश्रीर्विराजते ॥ ३४ ॥
saṃsārasaṃsṛterasyā gandhakuṭyāṃ śirogatā ,
dehayaṣṭyāṃ jarānāmnī cāmaraśrīrvirājate 34
34. saṃsārasaṃsṛteḥ asyāḥ gandhakuṭyām śirogatā
dehayāṣṭyām jarānāmnī cāmaraśrīḥ virājate
34. asyāḥ saṃsārasaṃsṛteḥ gandhakuṭyām dehayāṣṭyām
jarānāmnī śirogatā cāmaraśrīḥ virājate
34. In this very staff-like body, which is a delightful abode within the cycles of worldly existence (saṃsāra), old age (jarā), named Jarā, shines forth with the grandeur of a royal fly-whisk, having reached the pinnacle.
जराचन्द्रोदयसिते शरीरनगरे स्थिते ।
क्षणाद्विकासमायाति मुने मरणकैरवम् ॥ ३५ ॥
jarācandrodayasite śarīranagare sthite ,
kṣaṇādvikāsamāyāti mune maraṇakairavam 35
35. jarācandrodavasite śarīranagare sthite
kṣaṇāt vikāsam āyāti mune maraṇakairavam
35. mune,
jarācandrodavasite śarīranagare sthite (sati),
kṣaṇāt maraṇakairavam vikāsam āyāti
35. O sage, as the city of the body stands, made pale by the dawning moon of old age (jarā), in that very instant, the water-lily of death (maraṇa) blossoms forth.
जरासुधालेपसिते शरीरान्तःपुरान्तरे ।
अशक्तिरार्तिरापच्च तिष्ठन्ति सुखमङ्गनाः ॥ ३६ ॥
jarāsudhālepasite śarīrāntaḥpurāntare ,
aśaktirārtirāpacca tiṣṭhanti sukhamaṅganāḥ 36
36. jarāsudhālepasite śarīrāntaḥpurāntare aśaktiḥ
ārtiḥ āpat ca tiṣṭhanti sukham aṅganāḥ
36. jarāsudhālepasite śarīrāntaḥpurāntare,
aśaktiḥ ārtiḥ ca āpat,
aṅganāḥ (iva) sukham tiṣṭhanti
36. Within the inner palace-chambers of the body, which are whitened by the lime-plaster of old age (jarā), powerlessness, suffering, and misfortune comfortably reside like women.
अभावोऽग्रेसरी यत्र जरा जयति जन्तुषु ।
कस्तत्रेह समाश्वासो मम मन्दमतेर्मुने ॥ ३७ ॥
abhāvo'gresarī yatra jarā jayati jantuṣu ,
kastatreha samāśvāso mama mandamatermune 37
37. abhāvaḥ agresarī yatra jarā jayati jantuṣu
kaḥ tatra iha samāśvāsaḥ mama mandamateḥ mune
37. mune,
yatra jarā jantuṣu jayati,
(ca) abhāvaḥ agresarī (bhavati),
tatra iha mama mandamateḥ kaḥ samāśvāsaḥ (asti)?
37. O sage, where old age (jarā) prevails over living beings, with annihilation (abhāva) acting as its vanguard, what comfort can there be for me, whose intellect is dull, in this world?
किं तेन दुर्जीवितदुर्ग्रहेण जरागतेनापि हि जीव्यते यत् ।
जराजगत्यामजिता जनानां सर्वैषणास्तात तिरस्करोति ॥ ३८ ॥
kiṃ tena durjīvitadurgraheṇa jarāgatenāpi hi jīvyate yat ,
jarājagatyāmajitā janānāṃ sarvaiṣaṇāstāta tiraskaroti 38
38. kim tena durjīvitadurgraheṇa jarāgatena api hi jīvyate yat |
jarā jagatyām ajitā janānām sarvaiṣaṇāḥ tāta tiraskaroti ||
38. tāta yat durjīvitadurgraheṇa jarāgatena api hi jīvyate tena kim? jagatyām ajitā jarā janānām sarvaiṣaṇāḥ tiraskaroti.
38. What is the purpose of that wretchedly lived and stubbornly held-on-to life, by which one continues to exist even after old age has set in? For, O dear one, old age, when unconquered (ajitā) in this world, suppresses all the desires of people.
