1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, when I, situated in the sky and seated on a mentally conceived seat, questioned her after she had spoken thus and for whom a seat had been mentally prepared, she remained there.
कथं शिलोदरे बाले त्वद्विधानां भवेत्स्थितिः ।
कथं संचलनं तत्र किमर्थं तत्र चास्पदम् ॥ २ ॥
kathaṃ śilodare bāle tvadvidhānāṃ bhavetsthitiḥ ,
kathaṃ saṃcalanaṃ tatra kimarthaṃ tatra cāspadam 2
2. katham śila-udare bāle tvad-vidhānām bhavet sthitiḥ
katham sañcalanam tatra kim-artham tatra ca āspadam

2. O young girl, how can beings like you exist within a rock? How is there movement there? And for what purpose is that place your abode?
विद्याधर्युवाच ।
मुने यथेदं भवतां जगत्स्फारं विराजते ।
तथास्माकं जगत्तत्र सर्गसंसारयुक् स्थितम् ॥ ३ ॥
vidyādharyuvāca ,
mune yathedaṃ bhavatāṃ jagatsphāraṃ virājate ,
tathāsmākaṃ jagattatra sargasaṃsārayuk sthitam 3
3. vidyādharī uvāca mune yathā idam bhavatām jagat sphāram
virājate tathā asmākam jagat tatra sarga-saṃsāra-yuk sthitam
3. vidyādharī uvāca mune yathā bhavatām idam sphāram jagat
virājate tathā asmākam jagat tatra sarga-saṃsāra-yuk sthitam
3. The Vidyādharī said: O sage, just as this vast world of yours splendidly exists, so too our world exists there (inside the rock), complete with its own cycle of creation and transmigration (saṃsāra).
स्फुरन्ति नागाः पाताले तिष्ठन्ति भुवि पर्वताः ।
आपश्छलछलायन्ते वहन्ति व्योम्नि वायवः ॥ ४ ॥
sphuranti nāgāḥ pātāle tiṣṭhanti bhuvi parvatāḥ ,
āpaśchalachalāyante vahanti vyomni vāyavaḥ 4
4. sphuranti nāgāḥ pātāle tiṣṭhanti bhuvi parvatāḥ

4. Serpents flash in the netherworld; mountains remain firm on the earth. Waters ripple and gurgle, and winds blow through the sky.
अर्णवा अर्णसा भान्ति यान्त्यन्तः शनकैः प्रजाः ।
भूतान्यजस्रं जायन्ते म्रियन्तेऽविरतं यथा ॥ ५ ॥
arṇavā arṇasā bhānti yāntyantaḥ śanakaiḥ prajāḥ ,
bhūtānyajasraṃ jāyante mriyante'virataṃ yathā 5
5. arṇavāḥ arṇasā bhānti yānti antaḥ śanakaiḥ prajāḥ
bhūtāni ajasram jāyante mriyante aviratam yathā
5. arṇavāḥ arṇasā bhānti.
prajāḥ śanakaiḥ antaḥ yānti.
yathā bhūtāni ajasram jāyante aviratam mriyante.
5. Oceans gleam with their vast waters. Creatures slowly move towards their end. Just as this happens, beings are ceaselessly born and continuously die.
वान्ति वाता वहन्त्यापो भान्ति चाभान्ति खे सुराः ।
तिष्ठन्त्यगाः समुद्यन्ति ग्रहा यान्ति महीं नृपाः ॥ ६ ॥
vānti vātā vahantyāpo bhānti cābhānti khe surāḥ ,
tiṣṭhantyagāḥ samudyanti grahā yānti mahīṃ nṛpāḥ 6
6. vānti vātāḥ vahanti āpaḥ bhānti ca ābhānti khe surāḥ
tiṣṭhanti agāḥ samudyanti grahāḥ yānti mahīm nṛpāḥ

surāḥ khe bhānti ca ābhānti.

6. Winds blow, waters flow, and deities brilliantly appear in the sky. Mountains stand firm, planets rise, and kings move across the earth.
देवासुरमनुष्याणां व्यवहारपरम्पराः ।
लोलाः प्रवृत्ता आकल्पमासमुद्रमिवापगाः ओ ॥ ७ ॥
devāsuramanuṣyāṇāṃ vyavahāraparamparāḥ ,
lolāḥ pravṛttā ākalpamāsamudramivāpagāḥ o 7
7. devāsuramanuṣyāṇām vyavahāraparamparāḥ lolāḥ
pravṛttāḥ ākalpam āsamudram iva āpagāḥ o
7. devāsuramanuṣyāṇām lolāḥ vyavahāraparamparāḥ ākalpam pravṛttāḥ,
āpagāḥ āsamudram iva (o).
7. The restless and continuous activities among gods, demons, and humans have commenced and endure until the end of a cosmic age (kalpa), just like rivers flow towards the ocean.
दिनपद्मानि भूलोकसरस्याकल्पमानभः ।
लोलाभ्रालीनि फुल्लानि मीलितोन्मीलितान्यलम् ॥ ८ ॥
dinapadmāni bhūlokasarasyākalpamānabhaḥ ,
lolābhrālīni phullāni mīlitonmīlitānyalam 8
8. dina-padmāni bhūloka-sarasyāḥ akalpamāna-bhāḥ
lolābhrālīni phullāni mīlita-unmīlitāni alam
8. dina-padmāni bhūloka-sarasyāḥ akalpamāna-bhāḥ
lolābhrālīni phullāni mīlita-unmīlitāni alam
8. The day-lotuses, residing within the lake of the earthly realm, possess an uncreated splendor, display wavering cloud formations, are fully bloomed, and indeed alternately close and open.
चन्द्रचर्चाश्चतुर्दिक्कं चन्दनेनात्मतेजसा ।
रचयन्रात्रिरोहिण्योस्तमो हन्त्यपि हृद्गतम् ॥ ९ ॥
candracarcāścaturdikkaṃ candanenātmatejasā ,
racayanrātrirohiṇyostamo hantyapi hṛdgatam 9
9. candra-carcāḥ catur-dikkam candanena ātma-tejasā
racayan rātri-rohiṇyoḥ tamaḥ hanti api hṛd-gatam
9. racayan candra-carcāḥ catur-dikkam candanena
ātma-tejasā rātri-rohiṇyoḥ tamaḥ api hṛd-gatam hanti
9. The Moon, by creating its soothing moonlight (candra-carcāḥ) in all four directions, like sandalwood paste applied with its own inherent splendor (ātman), dispels darkness, even that residing within the heart.
स्वदशास्वादनरता वातयन्त्रसुचारिता ।
रोदःसद्मनि सूर्याख्या दीप्यते दिवि दीपिका ॥ १० ॥
svadaśāsvādanaratā vātayantrasucāritā ,
rodaḥsadmani sūryākhyā dīpyate divi dīpikā 10
10. sva-daśā-svādana-ratā vāta-yantra-sucāritā
rodaḥ-sadmani sūryākhyā dīpyate divi dīpikā
10. sūryākhyā dīpikā sva-daśā-svādana-ratā
vāta-yantra-sucāritā rodaḥ-sadmani divi dīpyate
10. The lamp, known as Sūryā (the Sun), which delights in experiencing its own phases and is smoothly propelled by the cosmic wind-mechanism, shines brilliantly in the abode of space, in the heavens.
ब्रह्मसंकल्पितो रुद्धो वातसंचारचारिभिः ।
खेऽनिशं चक्रमृक्षाणां गुणावर्तो विवर्तते ॥ ११ ॥
brahmasaṃkalpito ruddho vātasaṃcāracāribhiḥ ,
khe'niśaṃ cakramṛkṣāṇāṃ guṇāvarto vivartate 11
11. brahma-saṅkalpitaḥ ruddhaḥ vāta-sañcāra-cāribhiḥ
khe aniśam cakram ṛkṣāṇām guṇā-vartaḥ vivartate
11. brahma-saṅkalpitaḥ vāta-sañcāra-cāribhiḥ ruddhaḥ
ṛkṣāṇām cakram guṇā-vartaḥ aniśam khe vivartate
11. The cycle of constellations (ṛkṣa), conceived by the supreme reality (brahman) and held in place by the forces that move through the currents of air, perpetually revolves in space, embodying a rotation governed by the cosmic qualities (guṇa).
भूततण्डुलमासृष्टेः पिनष्टि ध्रुवकीलकः ।
नियत्या चलितो रोदः कपाटाम्भोदघर्घरः ॥ १२ ॥
bhūtataṇḍulamāsṛṣṭeḥ pinaṣṭi dhruvakīlakaḥ ,
niyatyā calito rodaḥ kapāṭāmbhodaghargharaḥ 12
12. bhūtatandulam āsṛṣṭeḥ pinaṣṭi dhruvakīlakaḥ
niyatyā calitaḥ rodaḥ kapāṭāmbhodaghargharaḥ
12. dhruvakīlakaḥ niyatyā calitaḥ āsṛṣṭeḥ
bhūtatandulam pinaṣṭi rodaḥ kapāṭāmbhodaghargharaḥ
12. The constant pivot (of existence), set in motion by natural law (niyati), grinds the grains of beings (bhūtatandula) from the time of creation. Heaven and earth (in this cosmic process) are like a rumbling door of clouds.
द्वीपाब्धिशैलैर्भूपीठं विमाननगरैर्नभः ।
देत्यदानवनागौघैः पूर्णं पातालमण्डलम् ॥ १३ ॥
dvīpābdhiśailairbhūpīṭhaṃ vimānanagarairnabhaḥ ,
detyadānavanāgaughaiḥ pūrṇaṃ pātālamaṇḍalam 13
13. dvīpābdhiśailaiḥ bhūpīṭham vimānanagaraiḥ nabhaḥ
daityadānavanāgaughaiḥ pūrṇam pātālamaṇḍalam
13. bhūpīṭham dvīpābdhiśailaiḥ (pūrṇam); nabhaḥ vimānanagaraiḥ
(pūrṇam); pātālamaṇḍalam daityadānavanāgaughaiḥ pūrṇam
13. The earth's surface (bhūpīṭha) is filled with islands, oceans, and mountains. The sky (nabhas) is filled with celestial palaces (vimana) and cities. The realm of Pātāla is filled with hosts of Daityas, Dānavas, and Nāgas.
कुण्डलं त्रिजगल्लक्ष्म्या नीलं भूतलमण्डलम् ।
स्थितं चञ्चलमाचारचञ्चलायाः स्फुरन्मणि ॥ १४ ॥
kuṇḍalaṃ trijagallakṣmyā nīlaṃ bhūtalamaṇḍalam ,
sthitaṃ cañcalamācāracañcalāyāḥ sphuranmaṇi 14
14. kuṇḍalam trijagat lakṣmyā nīlam bhūtalamaṇḍalam
sthitam cañcalam ācāracañcalāyāḥ sphuranmaṇi
14. nīlam bhūtalamaṇḍalam trijagat lakṣmyā kuṇḍalam
ācāracañcalāyāḥ cañcalam sphuranmaṇi sthitam
14. The blue earth-sphere (bhūtalamaṇḍala) is the earring of the splendor (lakṣmī) of the three worlds. It rests as a gleaming, wavering jewel for the fickle goddess Lakṣmī, whose conduct is also fickle.
बुद्ध्यादिरहितां स्पन्दसंविदं वायवीमिव ।
स्थावरं जंगमं चैव सूक्ष्ममादाय जायते ॥ १५ ॥
buddhyādirahitāṃ spandasaṃvidaṃ vāyavīmiva ,
sthāvaraṃ jaṃgamaṃ caiva sūkṣmamādāya jāyate 15
15. buddhyādirahitām spandasaṃvidam vāyavīm iva
sthāvaram jaṅgamam ca eva sūkṣmam ādāya jāyate
15. sūkṣmam sthāvaram jaṅgamam ca eva ādāya
buddhyādirahitām vāyavīm iva spandasaṃvidam jāyate
15. Devoid of intellect and other faculties, the throbbing consciousness (spandasaṃvit), like wind, arises by encompassing the subtle essence of both immobile and mobile existence.
मुनिमौनैर्धरा वार्भिर्मारुतैः कपिचापलम् ।
आकाशैरवकाशित्वं तेजोभिर्भासनं श्रितम् ॥ १६ ॥
munimaunairdharā vārbhirmārutaiḥ kapicāpalam ,
ākāśairavakāśitvaṃ tejobhirbhāsanaṃ śritam 16
16. munimaunaiḥ dharā vārbhiḥ mārutaiḥ kapi-cāpalam
ākāśaiḥ avakāśitvaṃ tejobhiḥ bhāsanaṃ śritam
16. dharā munimaunaiḥ vārbhiḥ mārutaiḥ kapi-cāpalam
ākāśaiḥ avakāśitvaṃ tejobhiḥ bhāsanaṃ śritam
16. The earth derives its nature from the silence of sages. The fickleness of monkeys comes from waters and winds. Spatiality is inherent in space (ākāśa), and radiance is inherent in light.
वृक्षोर्व्यब्ध्यद्रिखचराः प्राणिनोन्तः स्फुरन्त्यलम् ।
मृतिजन्मोन्मुखाः कीटसुरासुरजलौकसः ॥ १७ ॥
vṛkṣorvyabdhyadrikhacarāḥ prāṇinontaḥ sphurantyalam ,
mṛtijanmonmukhāḥ kīṭasurāsurajalaukasaḥ 17
17. vṛkṣorvyabdhyadrikha-carāḥ prāṇinaḥ antaḥ sphuranti
alam mṛtijanmonmukhāḥ kīṭasurāsurajalaukasaḥ
17. vṛkṣorvyabdhyadrikha-carāḥ kīṭasurāsurajalaukasaḥ
mṛtijanmonmukhāḥ prāṇinaḥ antaḥ alam sphuranti
17. Trees, earth-dwellers, ocean-dwellers, mountain-dwellers, sky-dwellers, worms, gods, demons, and aquatic creatures - all these living beings manifest abundantly within (this universe), perpetually facing birth and death.
ससुरासुरगन्धर्वाः कालः कलयति प्रजाः ।
दोर्भिः कल्पयुगाब्दैश्च स्वपशूनिव पालकः ॥ १८ ॥
sasurāsuragandharvāḥ kālaḥ kalayati prajāḥ ,
dorbhiḥ kalpayugābdaiśca svapaśūniva pālakaḥ 18
18. sasurāsuragandharvāḥ kālaḥ kalayati prajāḥ
dorbhiḥ kalpayugābdaiḥ ca svapaśūn iva pālakaḥ
18. kālaḥ sasurāsuragandharvāḥ prajāḥ dorbhiḥ
kalpayugābdaiḥ ca svapaśūn iva pālakaḥ kalayati
18. Time (kāla) controls all beings - including gods, demons, and gandharvas - just as a herdsman (controls) his own animals, using its 'arms' of kalpas, yugas, and years.
अनन्तविपुलागाधगम्भीरे कालसागरे ।
उत्पत्त्योत्पत्त्य लीयन्ते ते त्वावर्तविवर्तया ॥ १९ ॥
anantavipulāgādhagambhīre kālasāgare ,
utpattyotpattya līyante te tvāvartavivartayā 19
19. anantavipulāgādhagambhīre kāla-sāgare utpattya
utpattya līyante te tu āvarta-vivartayā
19. te tu anantavipulāgādhagambhīre kāla-sāgare
utpattya utpattya āvarta-vivartayā līyante
19. Repeatedly arising and then dissolving, beings are (indeed) absorbed in the infinite, vast, unfathomable, and deep ocean of Time (kāla), driven by its cycles of manifestation and dissolution.
चतुर्दशविधा वातवेल्लिता भूतपांसवः ।
नाशाकाशे विलीयन्ते शरदम्भोदलीलया ॥ २० ॥
caturdaśavidhā vātavellitā bhūtapāṃsavaḥ ,
nāśākāśe vilīyante śaradambhodalīlayā 20
20. caturdaśavidhāḥ vātavellitāḥ bhūtapāṃsavaḥ
nāśākāśe vilīyante śaradambhodalīlayā
20. vātavellitāḥ caturdaśavidhāḥ bhūtapāṃsavaḥ
nāśākāśe śaradambhodalīlayā vilīyante
20. The fourteen types of elemental dust particles, stirred by the wind, dissolve into the void of dissolution with the effortless grace of autumn clouds.
भुवनं बोधयन्ती द्यौश्चन्द्रार्ककरचामरैः ।
स्थिताकाशांशुकाकल्पतारकोत्करशेखरा ॥ २१ ॥
bhuvanaṃ bodhayantī dyauścandrārkakaracāmaraiḥ ,
sthitākāśāṃśukākalpatārakotkaraśekharā 21
21. bhuvanaṃ bodhayantī dyauḥ candrārkakaracāmaraiḥ
sthitākāśāṃśukākalpatārakotkaraśekharā
21. dyauḥ bhuvanaṃ bodhayantī candrārkakaracāmaraiḥ
sthitākāśāṃśukākalpatārakotkaraśekharā
21. The sky, illuminating the world with the moon's and sun's rays as whisk-like fans, appears with a multitude of stars as its crest-jewels and ornaments upon the garment of the stable (ākāśa) space.
स्थिताः पवनभूकम्पमेघतापसहिष्णवः ।
स्वं प्रदेशमनुज्झन्त्यः ककुभः स्तम्भिता इव ॥ २२ ॥
sthitāḥ pavanabhūkampameghatāpasahiṣṇavaḥ ,
svaṃ pradeśamanujjhantyaḥ kakubhaḥ stambhitā iva 22
22. sthitāḥ pavanabhūkampameghatāpasahiṣṇavaḥ svaṃ
pradeśam anujjhantyaḥ kakubhaḥ stambhitāḥ iva
22. kakubhaḥ pavanabhūkampameghatāpasahiṣṇavaḥ svaṃ
pradeśam anujjhantyaḥ sthitāḥ stambhitāḥ iva
22. The directions remain fixed, enduring winds, earthquakes, clouds, and heat, not abandoning their own regions, as if they are pillars.
उत्पातमेघनिर्ह्रादभूमिकम्पग्रहग्रहैः ।
अप्यातैरपि विज्ञातैर्भूतानां जायते गतिः ॥ २३ ॥
utpātameghanirhrādabhūmikampagrahagrahaiḥ ,
apyātairapi vijñātairbhūtānāṃ jāyate gatiḥ 23
23. utpātameghanirhrādabhūkampagrahagraḥaiḥ
apyātaiḥ api vijñātaiḥ bhūtānāṃ jāyate gatiḥ
23. bhūtānāṃ gatiḥ utpātameghanirhrādabhūkampagrahagraḥaiḥ
apyātaiḥ api vijñātaiḥ jāyate
23. The destiny (gati) of creatures comes to pass, even though portents, thunder, earthquakes, and planetary afflictions are experienced and understood.
सप्तानां जलमब्धीनामौर्वाग्निः पिबति ज्वलन् ।
लोकान्तराणामाकल्पं कालो भूतगणं यथा ॥ २४ ॥
saptānāṃ jalamabdhīnāmaurvāgniḥ pibati jvalan ,
lokāntarāṇāmākalpaṃ kālo bhūtagaṇaṃ yathā 24
24. saptānām jalam abdhīnām aurvāgniḥ pibati jvalan
lokāntarāṇām ākalpam kālaḥ bhūtagaṇam yathā
24. jvalan aurvāgniḥ saptānām abdhīnām jalam pibati
yathā kālaḥ ākalpam lokāntarāṇām bhūtagaṇam
24. The blazing submarine fire drinks the water of the seven oceans, just as Time (kāla) devours the multitude of beings (bhūtagaṇa) in various worlds until the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa).
पातालमाविशति याति नभोबिलं च दिङ्मण्डलं भ्रमति भूतगणः समन्तात् ।
पर्येति पर्वतमहार्णवमण्डलानि द्वीपान्तराणि च मरुत्सरणक्रमेण ॥ २५ ॥
pātālamāviśati yāti nabhobilaṃ ca diṅmaṇḍalaṃ bhramati bhūtagaṇaḥ samantāt ,
paryeti parvatamahārṇavamaṇḍalāni dvīpāntarāṇi ca marutsaraṇakrameṇa 25
25. pātālam āviśati yāti nabho-bilam ca
dik-maṇḍalam bhramati bhūtagaṇaḥ samantāt
paryeti parvata-mahārṇava-maṇḍalāni
dvīpa-antarāṇi ca marutsaraṇakrameṇa
25. bhūtagaṇaḥ pātālam āviśati nabho-bilam
ca yāti samantāt dik-maṇḍalam bhramati
ca marutsaraṇakrameṇa parvata-mahārṇava-maṇḍalāni
dvīpa-antarāṇi ca paryeti
25. The multitude of beings (bhūtagaṇa) enters the netherworld, goes to the hollow of the sky, and wanders all around the circle of directions; it encompasses the circles of mountains and great oceans and other islands, moving in the manner of the wind's course.
