वृद्धतापस उवाच ।
तस्मिन्नेव कदम्बेऽस्मिन्वर्षाणि स्वेच्छया दश ।
स्थित्वा गौरी जगामाथ हरवामार्धमन्दिरम् ॥ १ ॥

1. The old ascetic said: Gauri, having resided for ten years by her own will in this very Kadamba tree, then departed to Hara's (Shiva's) left-half abode.
तत्स्पर्शामृतसिक्तोऽयं कदम्बतरुपुत्रकः ।
उत्सङ्ग इव चासीनो न यात्येव पुराणताम् ॥ २ ॥
tatsparśāmṛtasikto'yaṃ kadambataruputrakaḥ ,
utsaṅga iva cāsīno na yātyeva purāṇatām 2
2. tatsparśāmṛtasiktaḥ ayam kadambataruputrakaḥ
utsaṅga iva ca āsīnaḥ na yāti eva purāṇatām
2. ayam kadambataruputrakaḥ tatsparśāmṛtasiktaḥ
utsaṅga iva ca āsīnaḥ purāṇatām na eva yāti
2. This young kadamba tree, moistened by the nectar of her touch, and resting as if in her lap, truly never grows old.
ततो गौर्या प्रयातायां तद्वनं तादृशं महत् ।
सामान्यवनतां यातं जनवृन्दोपजीवितम् ॥ ३ ॥
tato gauryā prayātāyāṃ tadvanaṃ tādṛśaṃ mahat ,
sāmānyavanatāṃ yātaṃ janavṛndopajīvitam 3
3. tataḥ gauryā prayātāyām tat vanam tādṛśam
mahat sāmānyavanatām yātam janavṛndopajīvitam
3. tataḥ gauryām prayātāyām,
tādṛśam mahat tat vanam janavṛndopajīvitam sāmānyavanatām yātam
3. Subsequently, with Gauri having departed, that great and splendid forest became an ordinary one, sustained by the multitude of people.
मालवो नाम देशोऽस्ति तत्राहं पृथिवीपतिः ।
कदाचित्त्यक्तराज्यश्रीर्मुनीनामाश्रमान्भ्रमन् ॥ ४ ॥
mālavo nāma deśo'sti tatrāhaṃ pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
kadācittyaktarājyaśrīrmunīnāmāśramānbhraman 4
4. mālavaḥ nāma deśaḥ asti tatra aham pṛthivīpatiḥ
kadācit tyaktarājyaśrīḥ munīnām āśramān bhraman
4. mālavaḥ nāma deśaḥ asti.
tatra aham pṛthivīpatiḥ kadācit tyaktarājyaśrīḥ munīnām āśramān bhraman
4. There is a country called Malava. I, the king (pṛthivīpati) of that land, once, having renounced the splendor of my kingdom, was wandering among the hermitages (āśramas) of sages.
इमं देशमनुप्राप्त इह चाश्रमवासिमिः ।
पूजितोऽस्य कदम्बस्य ध्याननिष्ठस्तले स्थितः ॥ ५ ॥
imaṃ deśamanuprāpta iha cāśramavāsimiḥ ,
pūjito'sya kadambasya dhyānaniṣṭhastale sthitaḥ 5
5. imam deśam anuprāptaḥ iha ca āśramavāsimiḥ
pūjitaḥ asya kadambasya dhyānaniṣṭhaḥ tale sthitaḥ
5. imam deśam anuprāptaḥ iha ca āśramavāsimiḥ
pūjitaḥ asya kadambasya tale dhyānaniṣṭhaḥ sthitaḥ
5. I reached this country, and here, having been honored by the residents of the hermitage (āśrama), I took my place at the base of this kadamba tree, devoted to meditation (dhyāna).
केनचित्त्वथ कालेन भ्रातृभिः सप्तभिः सह ।
भवानभ्यागतः पूर्वं तपोर्थमिममाश्रमम् ॥ ६ ॥
kenacittvatha kālena bhrātṛbhiḥ saptabhiḥ saha ,
bhavānabhyāgataḥ pūrvaṃ taporthamimamāśramam 6
6. kena cit tu atha kālena bhrātṛbhiḥ saptabhiḥ saha
bhavān abhyāgataḥ pūrvam tapo'rtham imam āśramam
6. atha kenacit kālena bhavān pūrvam saptabhiḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha tapo'rtham imam āśramam abhyāgataḥ
6. Then, some time ago, you arrived at this hermitage with your seven brothers for the purpose of performing asceticism (tapas).
तपस्विनोऽष्टाविह ते तथा नाम तदाऽवसन् ।
यथा तपस्विनोऽन्ये ते तेषां मान्यास्तपस्विनः ॥ ७ ॥
tapasvino'ṣṭāviha te tathā nāma tadā'vasan ,
yathā tapasvino'nye te teṣāṃ mānyāstapasvinaḥ 7
7. tapasvinaḥ aṣṭau iha te tathā nāma tadā avasan
yathā tapasvinaḥ anye te teṣām mānyāḥ tapasvinaḥ
7. iha te aṣṭau tapasvinaḥ tadā nāma tathā avasan
yathā anye te tapasvinaḥ teṣām mānyāḥ tapasvinaḥ
7. Here, those eight ascetics (tapasvin) dwelled in such a way then that other ascetics (tapasvin) considered them venerable.
कालेनानन्तरमसावेकः श्रीपर्वतं गतः ।
स्वामिनं कार्तिकेयं च द्वितीयस्तपसे गतः ॥ ८ ॥
kālenānantaramasāvekaḥ śrīparvataṃ gataḥ ,
svāminaṃ kārtikeyaṃ ca dvitīyastapase gataḥ 8
8. kālena anantaram asau ekaḥ śrīparvatam gataḥ
svāminam kārtikeyam ca dvitīyaḥ tapase gataḥ
8. anantaram kālena asau ekaḥ śrīparvatam gataḥ,
ca dvitīyaḥ svāminam kārtikeyam tapase gataḥ
8. After some time, one of them went to Śrīparvata, and a second went to Lord Kārtikeya for asceticism (tapas).
वाराणसीं तृतीयस्तु चतुर्थोऽगाद्धिमाचलम् ।
इहैव ते परे धीराश्चत्वारोऽन्ये परं तपन् ॥ ९ ॥
vārāṇasīṃ tṛtīyastu caturtho'gāddhimācalam ,
ihaiva te pare dhīrāścatvāro'nye paraṃ tapan 9
9. vārāṇasīm tṛtīyaḥ tu caturthaḥ agāt himācalam
iha eva te pare dhīrāḥ catvāraḥ anye param tapan
9. tṛtīyaḥ tu vārāṇasīm agāt,
caturthaḥ himācalam agāt,
eva ca iha anye te pare catvāraḥ dhīrāḥ param tapan
9. The third, however, went to Vārāṇasī, and the fourth proceeded to Himācala (the Himalayas). And here, the other four resolute ones performed supreme asceticism (tapas).
सर्वेषामेव चैतेषां प्रत्येकं त्वेतदीप्सितम् ।
यथा समस्तद्वीपाया भुवोऽस्याः स्यां महीपतिः ॥ १० ॥
sarveṣāmeva caiteṣāṃ pratyekaṃ tvetadīpsitam ,
yathā samastadvīpāyā bhuvo'syāḥ syāṃ mahīpatiḥ 10
10. sarveṣām eva ca eteṣām pratyekam tu etat īpsitam
yathā samastadvīpāyāḥ bhuvaḥ asyāḥ syām mahīpatiḥ
10. ca sarveṣām eva eteṣām pratyekam tu etat īpsitam
yathā asyāḥ samastadvīpāyāḥ bhuvaḥ mahīpatiḥ syām
10. And this was individually desired by each of them: "May I become the ruler of this earth (bhū), which comprises all its continents."
अथ संपादितं तेषां सर्वेषामेतदीप्सितम् ।
तपस्तुष्टाभिरिष्टाभिर्देवताभिर्वरर्वरैः ॥ ११ ॥
atha saṃpāditaṃ teṣāṃ sarveṣāmetadīpsitam ,
tapastuṣṭābhiriṣṭābhirdevatābhirvararvaraiḥ 11
11. atha saṃpāditam teṣām sarveṣām etat īpsitam
tapas tuṣṭābhiḥ iṣṭābhiḥ devatābhiḥ varaiḥ varaiḥ
11. atha teṣām sarveṣām etat īpsitam tapas tuṣṭābhiḥ
iṣṭābhiḥ devatābhiḥ varaiḥ varaiḥ saṃpāditam
11. Now, this desired object (boon) was accomplished for all of them by the cherished deities, who were pleased by their asceticism (tapas), through various boons.
तपतस्ते ततो याता भ्रातरः सदनं निजम् ।
भूमौ धर्मयुगं भुक्त्वा वेधा ब्रह्मपुरीमिव ॥ १२ ॥
tapataste tato yātā bhrātaraḥ sadanaṃ nijam ,
bhūmau dharmayugaṃ bhuktvā vedhā brahmapurīmiva 12
12. tapataḥ te tataḥ yātāḥ bhrātaraḥ sadanam nijam
bhūmau dharmayugam bhuktvā vedhāḥ brahmapurīm iva
12. tataḥ tapataḥ te bhrātaraḥ bhūmau dharmayugam
bhuktvā nijam sadanam yātāḥ vedhāḥ brahmapurīm iva
12. Then, having performed asceticism (tapas), those brothers returned to their own abode, after having enjoyed an age of righteousness (dharma) on earth, just as the creator (Vedhā) returns to the city of Brahmā (Brahmapurī).
तैर्भवद्भ्रातृभिर्भव्य वरदानविधौ तदा ।
इदं वरोद्यता यत्नात्प्रार्थिताः स्वेष्टदेवताः ॥ १३ ॥
tairbhavadbhrātṛbhirbhavya varadānavidhau tadā ,
idaṃ varodyatā yatnātprārthitāḥ sveṣṭadevatāḥ 13
13. taiḥ bhavat bhrātṛbhiḥ bhavya varadānavidhau tadā
idam vara udyatāḥ yatnāt prārthitāḥ sva iṣṭadevatāḥ
13. bhavya tadā varadānavidhau taiḥ bhavat bhrātṛbhiḥ
sva iṣṭadevatāḥ varodyatāḥ yatnāt idam prārthitāḥ
13. O auspicious one (bhavya), at that time, during the boon-granting ritual, your future brothers diligently entreated their own chosen deities, who were ready to grant boons, for this.
देव्यस्माकमिमे सर्वे सप्तद्वीपेश्वरस्थितौ ।
सत्याः प्रकृतयः सन्तु सर्व आश्रमवासिनः ॥ १४ ॥
devyasmākamime sarve saptadvīpeśvarasthitau ,
satyāḥ prakṛtayaḥ santu sarva āśramavāsinaḥ 14
14. devi asmākam ime sarve saptadvīpeśvarasthitau
satyāḥ prakṛtayaḥ santu sarve āśramavāsinaḥ
14. devi,
asmākam ime sarve prakṛtayaḥ saptadvīpeśvarasthitau satyāḥ santu,
sarve āśramavāsinaḥ (santu)
14. O Goddess, may all these subjects (prakṛti) of ours, who are established under the ruler of the seven continents, and all the residents of the hermitages (āśrama), remain truthful.
तमिष्टदेवतासार्थमुररीकृत्य सादरम् ।
तेषामस्त्वेवमित्युक्त्वा जगामान्तर्द्धिमीश्वरी ॥ १५ ॥
tamiṣṭadevatāsārthamurarīkṛtya sādaram ,
teṣāmastvevamityuktvā jagāmāntarddhimīśvarī 15
15. tam iṣṭadevatāsārtham urarīkṛtya sādaram teṣām
astu evam iti uktvā jagāma antarddhim īśvarī
15. īśvarī sādaram tam iṣṭadevatāsārtham urarīkṛtya
teṣām evam astu iti uktvā antarddhim jagāma
15. Respectfully assenting to that host of their chosen deities, the Goddess, saying, 'So be it for them,' then vanished from sight.
ते ततः सदनं यातास्तेषामाश्रमवासिनः ।
सर्व एव गताः पश्चादेक एवास्मि नो गतः ॥ १६ ॥
te tataḥ sadanaṃ yātāsteṣāmāśramavāsinaḥ ,
sarva eva gatāḥ paścādeka evāsmi no gataḥ 16
16. te tataḥ sadanam yātāḥ teṣām āśramavāsinaḥ
sarve eva gatāḥ paścāt ekaḥ eva asmi na gataḥ
16. tataḥ te āśramavāsinaḥ sadanam yātāḥ sarve
eva paścāt gatāḥ ekaḥ eva asmi na gataḥ
16. Then, those residents of the hermitages (āśrama) went to their abodes. All of them departed afterwards, but I alone did not go.
अहं केवलमेकान्ते ध्यानैकगतमानसः ।
वागीश्वरीकदम्बस्य तले तिष्ठामि शैलवत् ॥ १७ ॥
ahaṃ kevalamekānte dhyānaikagatamānasaḥ ,
vāgīśvarīkadambasya tale tiṣṭhāmi śailavat 17
17. aham kevalam ekānte dhyānaikagatamānasaḥ
vāgīśvarīkadambasya tale tiṣṭhāmi śailavat
17. aham kevalam ekānte dhyānaikagatamānasaḥ
vāgīśvarīkadambasya tale śailavat tiṣṭhāmi
17. I alone, in a secluded place, with my mind solely absorbed in meditation (dhyāna), stand like a mountain beneath the cluster of Vāgīśvarī deities.
अथ काले वहत्यस्मिन्नृतुसंवत्सरात्मनि ।
इदं सर्वं वनं छिन्नं जनैः पर्यन्तवासिभिः ॥ १८ ॥
atha kāle vahatyasminnṛtusaṃvatsarātmani ,
idaṃ sarvaṃ vanaṃ chinnaṃ janaiḥ paryantavāsibhiḥ 18
18. atha kāle vahati asmin ṛtusaṃvatsarātmani idam
sarvam vanam chinnam janaiḥ paryantavāsibhiḥ
18. atha asmin ṛtusaṃvatsarātmani kāle vahati idam
sarvam vanam paryantavāsibhiḥ janaiḥ chinnam
18. Then, as time (kāla) passed, constituted by seasons and years, all this forest was cut down by the people dwelling nearby.
इदं कदम्बमम्लानं जनताः पूजयन्त्यलम् ।
वागीश्वरीगृहमिति मां चैवैकसमाधिगम् ॥ १९ ॥
idaṃ kadambamamlānaṃ janatāḥ pūjayantyalam ,
vāgīśvarīgṛhamiti māṃ caivaikasamādhigam 19
19. idam kadambam amlānam janatāḥ pūjayanti alam
vāgīśvarīgṛham iti mām ca eva ekasamādhigam
19. janatāḥ idam amlānam kadambam vāgīśvarīgṛham
iti alam pūjayanti ca eva mām ekasamādhigam
19. This kadamba tree, unfading, people worship abundantly, thinking, 'This is the abode of Vāgīśvarī,' and also me, who am attained through single-minded concentration (dhyāna).
अथैनं देशमायातौ भवन्तौ दीर्घतापसौ ।
एतत्तत्कथितं सर्वं ध्यानदृष्टं मयाखिलम् ॥ २० ॥
athainaṃ deśamāyātau bhavantau dīrghatāpasau ,
etattatkathitaṃ sarvaṃ dhyānadṛṣṭaṃ mayākhilam 20
20. atha enam deśam āyātau bhavantau dīrghatāpasau
etat tat kathitam sarvam dhyānadṛṣṭam mayā akhilam
20. atha dīrghatāpasau bhavantau enam deśam āyātau
mayā etat tat akhilam sarvam dhyānadṛṣṭam kathitam
20. Now, you two, who have arrived in this land as long-observing ascetics (tapas), this entire narrative, seen through meditation (dhyāna), has been told by me.
तस्मादुत्थाय हे साधू गच्छतं गृहमागतौ ।
तत्र ते भ्रातरः सर्वे संगता दारबन्धुभिः ॥ २१ ॥
tasmādutthāya he sādhū gacchataṃ gṛhamāgatau ,
tatra te bhrātaraḥ sarve saṃgatā dārabandhubhiḥ 21
21. tasmāt utthāya he sādhū gacchatam gṛham āgatau
tatra te bhrātaraḥ sarve saṃgatāḥ dārabandhubhiḥ
21. he sādhū tasmāt utthāya āgatau gṛham gacchatam
tatra te sarve bhrātaraḥ dārabandhubhiḥ saṃgatāḥ
21. Therefore, having risen, O holy ones, go home; your brothers, all of them, have assembled there with their wives and relatives.
अष्टानां भवतां भव्यं सदने स्वे भविष्यति ।
महात्मनां ब्रह्मलोके वसूनामिव संगमः ॥ २२ ॥
aṣṭānāṃ bhavatāṃ bhavyaṃ sadane sve bhaviṣyati ,
mahātmanāṃ brahmaloke vasūnāmiva saṃgamaḥ 22
22. aṣṭānām bhavatām bhavyam sadane sve bhaviṣyati
mahātmanām brahmaloke vasūnām iva saṅgamaḥ
22. aṣṭānām bhavatām mahātmanām sve sadane brahmaloke
vasūnām iva bhavyam saṅgamaḥ bhaviṣyati
22. For the eight of you, great souls, an auspicious gathering will take place in your own abode, like the assembly of the Vasus in Brahmaloka (the world of Brahmā).
इत्युक्ते तेन स मया पृष्टः परमतापसः ।
संदेहादिदमाश्चर्यमार्यास्तद्वर्णयाम्यहम् ॥ २३ ॥
ityukte tena sa mayā pṛṣṭaḥ paramatāpasaḥ ,
saṃdehādidamāścaryamāryāstadvarṇayāmyaham 23
23. iti ukte tena saḥ mayā pṛṣṭaḥ paramatāpasaḥ
saṃdehāt idam āścaryam āryāḥ tat varṇayāmi aham
23. tena iti ukte,
mayā saḥ paramatāpasaḥ saṃdehāt pṛṣṭaḥ.
āryāḥ,
aham tat idam āścaryam varṇayāmi.
23. When this was thus spoken by him, I questioned that supreme ascetic (tapas) due to my doubt. O noble ones, I will now describe that astonishing matter.
एकैव सप्तद्वीपास्ति भगवन्भूरियं किल ।
तुल्यकालं भवन्त्यष्टौ सप्तद्वीपेश्वराः कथम् ॥ २४ ॥
ekaiva saptadvīpāsti bhagavanbhūriyaṃ kila ,
tulyakālaṃ bhavantyaṣṭau saptadvīpeśvarāḥ katham 24
24. ekā eva saptadvīpā asti bhagavan bhūḥ iyam kila
tulyakālam bhavanti aṣṭau saptadvīpeśvarāḥ katham
24. bhagavan,
iyam saptadvīpā bhūḥ ekā eva asti kila.
katham aṣṭau saptadvīpeśvarāḥ tulyakālam bhavanti?
24. O Lord, this Earth (bhū), with its seven continents, is certainly only one. How then can there be eight rulers of these seven continents simultaneously?
कदम्बतापस उवाच ।
असमञ्जसमेतावदेव नो यावदुच्यते ।
इदमन्यदसंबद्धतरं संश्रूयतां मम ॥ २५ ॥
kadambatāpasa uvāca ,
asamañjasametāvadeva no yāvaducyate ,
idamanyadasaṃbaddhataraṃ saṃśrūyatāṃ mama 25
25. kadambatāpasaḥ uvāca asamañjasam etāvat eva naḥ yāvat
ucyate idam anyat asaṃbaddhataram saṃśrūyatām mama
25. kadambatāpasaḥ uvāca yāvat ucyate etāvat eva naḥ asamañjasam.
idam anyat asaṃbaddhataram mama saṃśrūyatām.
25. The Kadamba ascetic said: 'What has been expressed so far is already inconsistent. Now, listen to this other matter from me, which is even more contradictory.'
एतेऽष्टौ भ्रातरस्तत्र तापसा देहसंक्षये ।
सप्तद्वीपेश्वराः सर्वे भविष्यन्ति गृहोदरे ॥ २६ ॥
ete'ṣṭau bhrātarastatra tāpasā dehasaṃkṣaye ,
saptadvīpeśvarāḥ sarve bhaviṣyanti gṛhodare 26
26. ete aṣṭau bhrātaraḥ tatra tāpasāḥ dehasaṃkṣaye
saptadvīpeśvarāḥ sarve bhaviṣyanti gṛhodare
26. ete aṣṭau bhrātaraḥ tāpasāḥ dehasaṃkṣaye tatra
sarve saptadvīpeśvarāḥ gṛhodare bhaviṣyanti
26. These eight brothers, who are ascetics, will all become rulers of the seven continents, being reborn in noble households after their present bodies perish.
अष्टौ ह्येते महीपीठेष्वेतेष्वेतेषु सद्मसु ।
सप्तद्वीपेश्वरा भूपा भविष्यन्तीह मे शृणु ॥ २७ ॥
aṣṭau hyete mahīpīṭheṣveteṣveteṣu sadmasu ,
saptadvīpeśvarā bhūpā bhaviṣyantīha me śṛṇu 27
27. aṣṭau hi ete mahīpīṭheṣu eteṣu eteṣu sadmasu
saptadvīpeśvarāḥ bhūpāḥ bhaviṣyanti iha me śṛṇu
27. hi me śṛṇu iha ete aṣṭau mahīpīṭheṣu eteṣu eteṣu
sadmasu saptadvīpeśvarāḥ bhūpāḥ bhaviṣyanti
27. Indeed, listen to me! These eight will become kings, rulers of the seven continents, established on the thrones of the earth, within these very royal residences.
अस्त्येतेषां किलाष्टानां भार्याष्टकमनिन्दितम् ।
दिगन्तराणां नियतं ताराष्टकमिवोज्ज्वलम् ॥ २८ ॥
astyeteṣāṃ kilāṣṭānāṃ bhāryāṣṭakamaninditam ,
digantarāṇāṃ niyataṃ tārāṣṭakamivojjvalam 28
28. asti eteṣām kila aṣṭānām bhāryāṣṭakam aninditam
digantarāṇām niyatam tārāṣṭakam iva ujjvalam
28. kila eteṣām aṣṭānām aninditam bhāryāṣṭakam asti
digantarāṇām niyatam ujjvalam tārāṣṭakam iva
28. Certainly, these eight men have an irreproachable group of eight wives, truly radiant like a cluster of eight stars spread across the directions.
तद्भार्याष्टकमेतेषु यातेषु तपसे चिरम् ।
बभूव दुःखितं स्त्रीणां यद्वियोगोऽहिदुःसहः ॥ २९ ॥
tadbhāryāṣṭakameteṣu yāteṣu tapase ciram ,
babhūva duḥkhitaṃ strīṇāṃ yadviyogo'hiduḥsahaḥ 29
29. tat bhāryāṣṭakam eteṣu yāteṣu tapase ciram
babhūva duḥkhitam strīṇām yat viyogaḥ ahiduḥsahaḥ
29. eteṣu ciram tapase yāteṣu tat bhāryāṣṭakam
duḥkhitam babhūva yat strīṇām viyogaḥ ahiduḥsahaḥ
29. That octet of wives became distressed when these men went away for a long time for austerities (tapas), because their separation was extremely difficult to bear.
दुःखिताः प्रत्यये तेषां चक्रुस्ता दारुणं तपः ।
शतचान्द्रायणं तासां तुष्टाभूत्तेन पार्वती ॥ ३० ॥
duḥkhitāḥ pratyaye teṣāṃ cakrustā dāruṇaṃ tapaḥ ,
śatacāndrāyaṇaṃ tāsāṃ tuṣṭābhūttena pārvatī 30
30. duḥkhitāḥ pratyaye teṣām cakruḥ tāḥ dāruṇam tapaḥ
śatacāndrāyaṇam tāsām tuṣṭā abhūt tena pārvatī
30. tāḥ duḥkhitāḥ teṣām pratyaye dāruṇam tapaḥ
śatacāndrāyaṇam cakruḥ tena tāsām pārvatī tuṣṭā abhūt
30. Distressed regarding their husbands, those women undertook severe austerities (tapas). Pārvatī was pleased with them because of their performance of a hundred Cāndrāyaṇa vows.
अदृश्योवाच सा तासां वचोऽन्तःपुरमन्दिरे ।
देवी सपर्यावसरे प्रत्येकं पृथगीश्वरी ॥ ३१ ॥
adṛśyovāca sā tāsāṃ vaco'ntaḥpuramandire ,
devī saparyāvasare pratyekaṃ pṛthagīśvarī 31
31. adṛśyā uvāca sā tāsām vacaḥ antaḥpuramandire
devī saparyāvasare pratyekam pṛthak īśvarī
31. sā adṛśyā devī īśvarī tāsām प्रत्येकं pṛthak
saparyāvasare antaḥpuramandire vacaḥ uvāca
31. The invisible goddess (devī), the sovereign (īśvarī), spoke words to each of those women separately in the inner chambers of the palace during the time of worship.
देव्युवाच ।
भर्त्रर्थमथ चात्मार्थे गृह्यतां बालिके वरः ।
चिरं क्लिष्टासि तपसा निदाघेनेव मञ्जरी ॥ ३२ ॥
devyuvāca ,
bhartrarthamatha cātmārthe gṛhyatāṃ bālike varaḥ ,
ciraṃ kliṣṭāsi tapasā nidāgheneva mañjarī 32
32. devī uvāca bhartrartham atha ca ātmārthe gṛhyatām bālike
varaḥ ciram kliṣṭā asi tapasā nidāghena iva mañjarī
32. devī uvāca bālike bhartrartham atha ca ātmārthe varaḥ
gṛhyatām tvam tapasā ciram nidāghena iva mañjarī kliṣṭā asi
32. The Goddess said: 'O young girl, accept a boon, for the sake of your husband and for your own welfare (ātman). You have been troubled for a long time by your austerities (tapas), like a cluster of blossoms withered by the summer heat.'
इत्याकर्ण्य वचो देव्या दत्तपुष्पा चिरंटिका ।
स्ववासनानुसारेण कुर्वाणैवेश्वरीस्तवम् ॥ ३३ ॥
ityākarṇya vaco devyā dattapuṣpā ciraṃṭikā ,
svavāsanānusāreṇa kurvāṇaiveśvarīstavam 33
33. iti ākarṇya vacaḥ devyā dattapuṣpā ciraṇṭikā
svavāsanānusāreṇa kurvāṇā eva īśvarīstavam
33. iti devyā vacaḥ ākarṇya dattapuṣpā ciraṇṭikā
svavāsanānusāreṇa īśvarīstavam kurvāṇā eva
33. Thus, having heard the words of the Goddess, the young girl, who had offered flowers, was indeed performing a hymn of praise to the Goddess (īśvarī) according to her own innate inclination (vāsanā).
आनन्दमन्थरोवाच वचनं मृदुभाषिणी ।
आकाशसंस्थितां देवीं मयूरीवाभ्रमालिकाम् ॥ ३४ ॥
ānandamantharovāca vacanaṃ mṛdubhāṣiṇī ,
ākāśasaṃsthitāṃ devīṃ mayūrīvābhramālikām 34
34. ānandamantharā uvāca vacanam mṛdubhāṣiṇī
ākāśasaṃsthitām devīm mayūrī iva abhramālikām
34. mṛdubhāṣiṇī ānandamantharā ākāśasaṃsthitām
devīm abhramālikām mayūrī iva vacanam uvāca
34. The soft-spoken Ānandamantharā spoke words to the goddess, who was situated in the sky, just as a peahen would (behold) a string of clouds.
चिरंटिकोवाच ।
देवि देवाधिदेवेन यथा ते प्रेम शंभुना ।
भर्त्रा मम तथा प्रेम स भर्तास्तु ममामरः ॥ ३५ ॥
ciraṃṭikovāca ,
devi devādhidevena yathā te prema śaṃbhunā ,
bhartrā mama tathā prema sa bhartāstu mamāmaraḥ 35
35. ciraṇṭikā uvāca devi devādhidevena yathā te prema śambhunā
bhartrā mama tathā prema sa bhartā astu mama amaraḥ
35. ciraṇṭikā uvāca devi yathā devādhidevena śambhunā te prema,
tathā mama bhartrā prema (astu).
sa mama bhartā amaraḥ astu.
35. Ciraṇṭikā said: 'O goddess, just as you have love for the Lord of gods, Śambhu, so may I have such love for my husband. And may that husband of mine be immortal.'
देव्युवाच ।
आसृष्टेर्नियतेर्दार्ढ्यादमरत्वं न लभ्यते ।
तपोदानैरतोऽन्यं त्वं वरं वरय सुव्रते ॥ ३६ ॥
devyuvāca ,
āsṛṣṭerniyaterdārḍhyādamaratvaṃ na labhyate ,
tapodānairato'nyaṃ tvaṃ varaṃ varaya suvrate 36
36. devī uvāca āsṛṣṭeḥ niyateḥ dārḍhyāt amaratvam na
labhyate tapodānaiḥ ataḥ anyam tvam varam varaya suvrate
36. devī uvāca suvrate āsṛṣṭeḥ niyateḥ dārḍhyāt (hi) tapodānaiḥ (api) amaratvam na labhyate,
ataḥ tvam anyam varam varaya
36. The goddess said: 'Due to the strictness of destiny (niyati) since creation, immortality is not obtained even through penance (tapas) and charity (dāna). Therefore, O virtuous one, ask for another boon.'
चिरंटिकोवाच ।
अलभ्यमेतन्मे देवि तन्मद्भर्तुर्गृहान्तरात् ।
मृतस्य मा विनिर्यातु जीवो बाह्यमपि क्षणात् ॥ ३७ ॥
ciraṃṭikovāca ,
alabhyametanme devi tanmadbharturgṛhāntarāt ,
mṛtasya mā viniryātu jīvo bāhyamapi kṣaṇāt 37
37. ciraṇṭikā uvāca alabhyam etat me devi tat mat bhartuḥ
gṛhāntarāt mṛtasya mā viniryātu jīvaḥ bāhyam api kṣaṇāt
37. ciraṇṭikā uvāca devi etat me alabhyam,
tat mṛtasya mat bhartuḥ jīvaḥ gṛhāntarāt bāhyam api kṣaṇāt mā viniryātu
37. Ciraṇṭikā said: 'O goddess, that (immortality) is unattainable for me. Therefore, may the life-force (jīva) of my dead husband not depart from within my house to the outside, not even for a moment.'
देहपातश्च मे भर्तुर्यदा स्यादात्ममन्दिरे ।
तदेतदस्त्विति वरो दीयतामम्बिके मम ॥ ३८ ॥
dehapātaśca me bharturyadā syādātmamandire ,
tadetadastviti varo dīyatāmambike mama 38
38. dehāpātaḥ ca me bhartuḥ yadā syāt ātma-mandire
tat etat astu iti varaḥ dīyatām ambike mama
38. ambike yadā me bhartuḥ dehāpātaḥ syāt ca mama
ātma-mandire syāt tat etat astu iti varaḥ mama dīyatām
38. O Ambikā, when my husband's demise occurs, may my own passing also take place within my own being (ātman). Grant me this boon: 'Let it be so'.
देव्युवाच ।
एवमस्तु सुते त्वं च पत्यौ लोकान्तरास्थिते ।
भविष्यसि प्रिया भार्या देहान्ते नात्र संशयः ॥ ३९ ॥
devyuvāca ,
evamastu sute tvaṃ ca patyau lokāntarāsthite ,
bhaviṣyasi priyā bhāryā dehānte nātra saṃśayaḥ 39
39. devī uvāca evam astu sute tvam ca patyau lokāntara-āsthite
bhaviṣyasi priyā bhāryā dehānte na atra saṃśayaḥ
39. devī uvāca: sute evam astu.
ca patyau lokāntara-āsthite tvam dehānte priyā bhāryā bhaviṣyasi.
atra saṃśayaḥ na.
39. The Goddess said: 'So be it, O daughter. And when your husband is situated in another world, you will indeed become his beloved wife again at the end of your body (i.e., upon your death); there is no doubt about this.'
इत्युक्त्वा विररामासौ गौर्या गीर्गगनोदरे ।
मेघमालाध्वनिरिव निरवद्यसमुद्यता ॥ ४० ॥
ityuktvā virarāmāsau gauryā gīrgaganodare ,
meghamālādhvaniriva niravadyasamudyatā 40
40. iti uktvā virarāma asau gauryā gīḥ gagana-udare
megha-mālā-dhvaniḥ iva niravadya-samudyatā
40. iti uktvā,
gauryāḥ gīḥ gagana-udare virarāma.
[sā] megha-mālā-dhvaniḥ iva niravadya-samudyatā.
40. Having spoken thus, Gaurī's (Pārvatī) voice ceased in the expanse of the sky. It was like the flawlessly magnificent sound of a bank of clouds.
देव्यां गतायां भर्तारस्तासां कालेन केनचित् ।
ते ककुब्भ्यः समाजग्मुः सर्वे प्राप्तमहावराः ॥ ४१ ॥
devyāṃ gatāyāṃ bhartārastāsāṃ kālena kenacit ,
te kakubbhyaḥ samājagmuḥ sarve prāptamahāvarāḥ 41
41. devyām gatāyām bhartāraḥ tāsām kālena kenacit te
kakubbhyaḥ samājagmuḥ sarve prāpta-mahā-varāḥ
41. devyām gatāyām,
kālena kenacit,
tāsām bhartāraḥ,
sarve prāpta-mahā-varāḥ,
kakubbhyaḥ samājagmuḥ.
41. After some time, when the Goddess had departed, all the husbands of those women, having obtained great boons (vara), assembled from various directions.
अद्यायमपि संयातु भार्याया निकटं पतिः ।
भ्रातॄणां बान्धवानां च भवत्वन्योन्यसंगमः ॥ ४२ ॥
adyāyamapi saṃyātu bhāryāyā nikaṭaṃ patiḥ ,
bhrātṝṇāṃ bāndhavānāṃ ca bhavatvanyonyasaṃgamaḥ 42
42. adya ayam api saṃyātu bhāryāyāḥ nikaṭam patiḥ
bhrātṝṇām bāndhavānām ca bhavatu anyonyasaṅgamaḥ
42. adya ayam patiḥ api bhāryāyāḥ nikaṭam saṃyātu ca
bhrātṝṇām bāndhavānām anyonyasaṅgamaḥ bhavatu
42. Today, let this husband also go to his wife. And may there be a reunion of brothers and relatives.
इदमन्यदथेतेषामसमञ्जसमाकुलम् ।
शृणु किंवृत्तमाश्चर्यमार्यकार्योपरोधकम् ॥ ४३ ॥
idamanyadatheteṣāmasamañjasamākulam ,
śṛṇu kiṃvṛttamāścaryamāryakāryoparodhakam 43
43. idam anyat atha eteṣām asamañjasam ākulam
śṛṇu kimvṛttam āścaryam āryakāryoparodhakam
43. atha eteṣām idam anyat asamañjasam ākulam
āryakāryoparodhakam āścaryam kimvṛttam śṛṇu
43. Now, hear this other astonishing event concerning them, which is incongruous and perplexing, and obstructs the noble task.
तप्यतां तप एतेषां पितरौ तौ वधूयुतौ ।
तीर्थमुन्याश्रमश्रेणीं द्रष्टुं दुःखान्वितौ गतौ ॥ ४४ ॥
tapyatāṃ tapa eteṣāṃ pitarau tau vadhūyutau ,
tīrthamunyāśramaśreṇīṃ draṣṭuṃ duḥkhānvitau gatau 44
44. tapyatām tapaḥ eteṣām pitarau tau vadhūyutau
tīrthamunyāśramaśreṇīm draṣṭum duḥkhānvitau gatau
44. eteṣām vadhūyutau tau pitarau tapaḥ tapyatām
duḥkhānvitau tīrthamunyāśramaśreṇīm draṣṭum gatau
44. Let the austerity (tapas) of these parents, accompanied by their daughter-in-law, be performed. Those two, afflicted by sorrow, went to see the series of holy places and hermitages.
शरीरनैरपेक्ष्येण पुत्राणां हितकाम्यया ।
गन्तुं कलापग्रामं तं यत्नवन्तौ बभूवतुः ॥ ४५ ॥
śarīranairapekṣyeṇa putrāṇāṃ hitakāmyayā ,
gantuṃ kalāpagrāmaṃ taṃ yatnavantau babhūvatuḥ 45
45. śarīranairapekṣyeṇa putrāṇām hitakāmyayā
gantum kalāpagramam tam yatnavantau babhūvatuḥ
45. śarīranairapekṣyeṇa putrāṇām hitakāmyayā tam
kalāpagramam gantum yatnavantau babhūvatuḥ
45. Disregarding their own bodies and desiring the welfare of their sons, those two became eager to go to that Kalāpa village.
तौ प्रयातौ मुनिग्राम मार्गे ददृशतुः सितम् ।
पुरुषं कपिलं ह्रस्वं भस्माङ्गं चोर्ध्वमूर्धजम् ॥ ४६ ॥
tau prayātau munigrāma mārge dadṛśatuḥ sitam ,
puruṣaṃ kapilaṃ hrasvaṃ bhasmāṅgaṃ cordhvamūrdhajam 46
46. tau prayātau munigrāma mārge dadṛśatuḥ sitam puruṣam
kapilam hrasvam bhasmāṅgam ca ūrdhvamūrdhajam
46. tau munigrāmam mārge prayātau sitam kapilam hrasvam

46. As they (Rama and Lakshmana) proceeded on the way to the village of sages, they saw a short man with a tawny complexion, whose body was covered in white ashes and whose hair stood upright.
धूलीलवमनादृत्य तं जरत्पान्थशङ्कया ।
यदा तौ जग्मतुस्तेन स उवाचान्वितः क्रुधा ॥ ४७ ॥
dhūlīlavamanādṛtya taṃ jaratpānthaśaṅkayā ,
yadā tau jagmatustena sa uvācānvitaḥ krudhā 47
47. dhūlīlavam anādṛtya tam jaratpānthaśaṅkayā yadā
tau jagmatuḥ tena saḥ uvāca anvitaḥ krudhā
47. yadā tau tam jaratpānthaśaṅkayā dhūlīlavam anādṛtya tena jagmatuḥ,
saḥ krudhā anvitaḥ uvāca
47. When they (Rama and Lakshmana) passed him by, neglecting him and mistaking him for an old traveler, he, filled with anger, spoke.
सवधूक महामूर्ख तीर्थार्थी दारसंयुतः ।
मां दुर्वाससमुल्लङ्घ्य गच्छस्यविहितानतिः ॥ ४८ ॥
savadhūka mahāmūrkha tīrthārthī dārasaṃyutaḥ ,
māṃ durvāsasamullaṅghya gacchasyavihitānatiḥ 48
48. savadhūka mahāmūrkha tīrthārthī dārasaṃyutaḥ
mām durvāsasam ullaṅghya gacchasi avihitānatiḥ
48. mahāmūrkha,
savadhūka dārasaṃyutaḥ tīrthārthī,
mām durvāsasam ullaṅghya avihitānatiḥ gacchasi
48. O great fool, you who seek sacred places (tīrtha), accompanied by your wife, you pass by me, Durvasa, without offering due obeisance!
वधूनां ते सुतानां च गच्छतस्तपसार्जिताः ।
विपरीता भविष्यन्ति लब्धा अपि महावराः ॥ ४९ ॥
vadhūnāṃ te sutānāṃ ca gacchatastapasārjitāḥ ,
viparītā bhaviṣyanti labdhā api mahāvarāḥ 49
49. vadhūnām te sutānām ca gacchataḥ tapasā ārjitāḥ
viparītā bhaviṣyanti labdhā api mahāvarāḥ
49. te gacchataḥ vadhūnām ca sutānām tapasā ārjitāḥ
labdhāḥ api mahāvarāḥ viparītā bhaviṣyanti
49. For your wives and sons, and for you, all the great boons that were obtained (or) acquired through asceticism (tapas) will turn adverse.
इत्युक्तवन्तं तं यावत्सदारोऽथ वधूयुतः ।
सन्मानं कुरुते तावन्मुनिरन्तर्धिमाययो ॥ ५० ॥
ityuktavantaṃ taṃ yāvatsadāro'tha vadhūyutaḥ ,
sanmānaṃ kurute tāvanmunirantardhimāyayo 50
50. iti uktavantam tam yāvat sa-dāraḥ atha vadhūyutaḥ
sanmānam kurute tāvat muniḥ antardhim āyayo
50. yāvat sa-dāraḥ atha vadhūyutaḥ tam iti uktavantam
sanmānam kurute tāvat muniḥ antardhim āyayo
50. While he, accompanied by his wife and daughter-in-law, was in the process of honoring the sage who had just spoken, the sage suddenly disappeared.
अथ तौ पितरौ तेषां सवधूकौ सुदुःखितौ ।
कृशीभूतौ दीनमुखौ निराशौ गृहमागतौ ॥ ५१ ॥
atha tau pitarau teṣāṃ savadhūkau suduḥkhitau ,
kṛśībhūtau dīnamukhau nirāśau gṛhamāgatau 51
51. atha tau pitarau teṣām sa-vadhūkau su-duḥkhitau
kṛśībhūtau dīnamukhau nirāśau gṛham āgatau
51. atha teṣām tau pitarau sa-vadhūkau su-duḥkhitau
kṛśībhūtau dīnamukhau nirāśau gṛham āgatau
51. Then, those parents, accompanied by their daughters-in-law, were greatly distressed, having become emaciated and sorrow-faced, and returned home in despair.
अतो वदाम्यहं तेषां नैकं नामासमञ्जसम् ।
असमञ्जसलक्षाणि गण्डे स्फोटाः स्फुटा इव ॥ ५२ ॥
ato vadāmyahaṃ teṣāṃ naikaṃ nāmāsamañjasam ,
asamañjasalakṣāṇi gaṇḍe sphoṭāḥ sphuṭā iva 52
52. ataḥ vadāmi aham teṣām na ekam nāma asamañjasam
asamañjasa-lakṣāṇi gaṇḍe sphoṭāḥ sphuṭāḥ iva
52. ataḥ aham teṣām ekam asamañjasam nāma na vadāmi
asamañjasa-lakṣāṇi gaṇḍe sphuṭāḥ sphoṭāḥ iva (asti)
52. Therefore, I do not refer to them by any single name, such as Asamañjasa. For, the distinctive marks of one who is inappropriate (asamañjasa) are as clearly visible as prominent boils on the cheek.
चिद्व्योमसंकल्पमहापुरेऽस्मिन्नित्थं विचित्राण्यसमञ्जसानि ।
निःशून्यरूपेऽपि हि संभवन्ति दृश्ये यथा व्योमनि दृश्यजृम्भाः ॥ ५३ ॥
cidvyomasaṃkalpamahāpure'sminnitthaṃ vicitrāṇyasamañjasāni ,
niḥśūnyarūpe'pi hi saṃbhavanti dṛśye yathā vyomani dṛśyajṛmbhāḥ 53
53. cit-vyoma-saṅkalpa-mahāpure asmin
ittham vicitrāṇi asamañjasāni
niḥśūnya-rūpe api hi sambhavanti
dṛśye yathā vyomani dṛśya-jṛmbhāḥ
53. asmin cit-vyoma-saṅkalpa-mahāpure ittham vicitrāṇi asamañjasāni hi niḥśūnya-rūpe api sambhavanti,
yathā dṛśya-jṛmbhāḥ dṛśye vyomani (sambhavanti)
53. In this great city of consciousness-space (cidvyoma) formed by imagination (saṅkalpa), such diverse and incongruous (asamañjasa) phenomena indeed arise, even in its non-empty nature, just as the myriad manifestations of the visible world emerge in the visible sky (vyoman).
