इति शुक्रः पुरं प्राप्य वैबुधं स्वेन तेजसा ।
विसस्मार निजं भावं प्राक्तनं व्यसनं विना ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Thus, upon reaching the city of the gods with his own splendor, Śukra completely forgot his former state (bhāva), free from any distress.
मुहूर्तमिव विश्रम्य तस्य पार्श्वे शचीपतेः ।
स्वर्गं विहर्तुमुत्तस्थौ स्वर्गाभिपरिमोदितः ॥ २ ॥
muhūrtamiva viśramya tasya pārśve śacīpateḥ ,
svargaṃ vihartumuttasthau svargābhiparimoditaḥ 2
2. muhūrtam iva viśramya tasya pārśve śacīpateḥ
svargam vihartum uttasthau svargābhiparimoditaḥ
2. śacīpateḥ tasya pārśve muhūrtam iva viśramya स्वर्गाभिपरिमोदितः (सः) स्वर्गम् vihartum uttasthau.
2. Having rested for a mere moment by the side of Śacī's lord (Indra), he rose up to sport in heaven, greatly delighted by the celestial realm.
स्वःश्रियं स समालोक्य लोललोचनवाञ्छिताम् ।
स्त्रैणं द्रष्टुं जगामासौ नलिनीमिव सारसः ॥ ३ ॥
svaḥśriyaṃ sa samālokya lolalocanavāñchitām ,
straiṇaṃ draṣṭuṃ jagāmāsau nalinīmiva sārasaḥ 3
3. svaḥśriyam sa samālokya lolalocanavāñchitām
straiṇam draṣṭum jagāma asau nalinīm iva sārasaḥ
3. saḥ lolalocanavāñchitām svaḥśriyam samālokya,
asau sārasaḥ nalinīm iva straiṇam draṣṭum jagāma.
3. Having thoroughly perceived the splendor of heaven, which was desired by restless eyes, he then went to see the celestial women, just as a crane approaches a lotus pond.
तत्र तां मृगशावाक्षीं कान्तामध्यगतामसौ ।
ददर्श विपिनान्तस्थां भृगुश्चूतलतामिव ॥ ४ ॥
tatra tāṃ mṛgaśāvākṣīṃ kāntāmadhyagatāmasau ,
dadarśa vipināntasthāṃ bhṛguścūtalatāmiva 4
4. tatra tām mṛgaśāvākṣīm kāntām adhyagatām asau
dadarśa vipināntasthām bhṛguḥ cūtalatām iva

4. There, he (Bhṛgu) saw his beloved, whose eyes were like those of a fawn, situated deep within the forest, just as one would see a mango vine.
सापि तं भार्गवं राम दृष्ट्वा परवशाभवत् ।
तामालोक्य लसल्लोलविलासवलिताकृतिम् ॥ ५ ॥
sāpi taṃ bhārgavaṃ rāma dṛṣṭvā paravaśābhavat ,
tāmālokya lasallolavilāsavalitākṛtim 5
5. sā api tam bhārgavam rāma dṛṣṭvā paravaśā
abhavat tām ālokya lasallolavilāsavalitākṛtim
5. rāma sā api tam bhārgavam dṛṣṭvā paravaśā
abhavat tām lasallolavilāsavalitākṛtim ālokya
5. O Rāma, she too, upon seeing that descendant of Bhṛgu, became overwhelmed. (And he, Bhṛgu), upon seeing her whose form was adorned with sparkling, restless charms...
आसीद्विलीयमानाङ्गो ज्योत्स्नामिन्दुमणिर्यथा ।
विलीयमानसर्वाङ्गस्तामवैक्षत कामिनीम् ॥ ६ ॥
āsīdvilīyamānāṅgo jyotsnāmindumaṇiryathā ,
vilīyamānasarvāṅgastāmavaikṣata kāminīm 6
6. āsīt vilīyamānāṅgaḥ jyotsnām indumaṇiḥ yathā
vilīyamānasarvāṅgaḥ tām avaikṣata kāminīm
6. indumaṇiḥ jyotsnām yathā (vilīyate),
(saḥ) vilīyamānāṅgaḥ āsīt vilīyamānasarvāṅgaḥ (saḥ) tām kāminīm avaikṣata
6. His body began to melt, just as a moonstone (indumaṇi) dissolves in moonlight (jyotsnā). With all his limbs dissolving, he gazed at that captivating woman.
चन्द्रकान्त इव ज्योत्स्नां शीतलां खे विलासिनीम् ।
तेनावलोकिता सापि तत्परायणतां गता ॥ ७ ॥
candrakānta iva jyotsnāṃ śītalāṃ khe vilāsinīm ,
tenāvalokitā sāpi tatparāyaṇatāṃ gatā 7
7. candrakāntaḥ iva jyotsnām śītalām khe vilāsinīm
tena avalokitā sā api tatparāyaṇatām gatā
7. candrakāntaḥ jyotsnām iva śītalām vilāsinīm (kāminīm) khe
(saḥ avaikṣata) tena avalokitā sā api tatparāyaṇatām gatā
7. (He gazed at that captivating woman) who was playful and cool like moonlight (jyotsnā) in the sky, just as a moonstone (chandrakānta) responds to moonlight. Being thus gazed upon by him, she too became wholly dedicated to him.
निशान्ते चक्रवाकेन कान्तेव परिकूजिता ।
रसाद्विकसिता नूनमन्योन्यमनुरक्तयोः ॥ ८ ॥
niśānte cakravākena kānteva parikūjitā ,
rasādvikasitā nūnamanyonyamanuraktayoḥ 8
8. niśānte cakravākena kāntā iva parikūjitā
rasāt vikasitā nūnam anyonyam anuraktayoḥ

8. At dawn, the female ruddy goose was called to by her beloved male, and indeed, she blossomed from the mutual affection of the two.
प्रातरर्कनलिन्योर्या शोभा सैव तयोरभूत् ।
संकल्पितार्थदायित्वाद्देशस्याभूच्च तेन सा ॥ ९ ॥
prātararkanalinyoryā śobhā saiva tayorabhūt ,
saṃkalpitārthadāyitvāddeśasyābhūcca tena sā 9
9. prātaḥ arkanalinyoḥ yā śobhā sā eva tayoḥ abhūt
saṃkalpitārthadāyitvāt deśasya abhūt ca tena sā
9. prātaḥ arkanalinyoḥ yā śobhā,
sā eva tayoḥ abhūt.
ca tena,
saṃkalpitārthadāyitvāt deśasya sā abhūt.
9. The beauty that belongs to the sun and lotuses in the morning, that very same beauty was theirs (the couple's). And for that reason, that beauty also belonged to the region, due to its capacity to grant desired wishes.
सर्वाङ्गं विवशीकृत्य कामायैव समर्पिता ।
पेतुः स्मरशरास्तस्या मृदुष्वङ्गेषु भूरिशः ॥ १० ॥
sarvāṅgaṃ vivaśīkṛtya kāmāyaiva samarpitā ,
petuḥ smaraśarāstasyā mṛduṣvaṅgeṣu bhūriśaḥ 10
10. sarvāṅgam vivaśīkṛtya kāmāya eva samarpitā
petuḥ smaraśarāḥ tasyāḥ mṛduṣu aṅgeṣu bhūriśaḥ
10. sarvāṅgam vivaśīkṛtya kāmāya eva samarpitā (sā),
smaraśarāḥ tasyāḥ mṛduṣu aṅgeṣu bhūriśaḥ petuḥ
10. Having rendered her entire body helpless, she was surrendered solely to love (kāma). The arrows of Kāma fell profusely upon her tender limbs.
पलाशेष्विव पद्मिन्या धारा इव पयोमुचः ।
सा बभूवस्मरोद्भूता लोलालिवलयाकुला ॥ ११ ॥
palāśeṣviva padminyā dhārā iva payomucaḥ ,
sā babhūvasmarodbhūtā lolālivalayākulā 11
11. palāśeṣu iva padminyā dhārāḥ iva payomucaḥ
sā babhūva smara udbhūtā lolālivavalayākulā
11. sā palāśeṣu iva,
padminyā,
payomucaḥ dhārāḥ iva,
smarodbhūtā lolālivavalayākulā babhūva
11. Like water resting on palasa leaves, like drops on a lotus, and like raindrops from a cloud, she became overwhelmed by love (kāma), agitated like a lotus troubled by restless swarms of bees.
मन्दवाताभिनुन्नाया मञ्जर्याः सहधर्मिणी ।
नीलनीरजनेत्रान्तां हंससारसगामिनीम् ॥ १२ ॥
mandavātābhinunnāyā mañjaryāḥ sahadharmiṇī ,
nīlanīrajanetrāntāṃ haṃsasārasagāminīm 12
12. manda-vātābhinunnāyāḥ mañjaryāḥ sahadharmiṇī
nīlanīrajanetrāntām haṃsasārasagāminīm
12. manda-vātābhinunnāyāḥ mañjaryāḥ sahadharmiṇī,

12. She, who is the companion of a cluster of blossoms gently swayed by a soft breeze, (and who is) having eyes like blue lotuses and the graceful gait of swans and cranes...
मदनः क्षोभयामास गजः कमलिनीमिव ।
अथ तां तादृशीं दृष्ट्वा शुक्रः संकल्पितार्थभाक् ॥ १३ ॥
madanaḥ kṣobhayāmāsa gajaḥ kamalinīmiva ,
atha tāṃ tādṛśīṃ dṛṣṭvā śukraḥ saṃkalpitārthabhāk 13
13. madanaḥ kṣobhayām āsa gajaḥ kamalinīm iva atha
tām tādṛśīm dṛṣṭvā śukraḥ saṅkalpitārthabhāk
13. madanaḥ gajaḥ kamalinīm iva (tām) kṣobhayām āsa.
atha śukraḥ saṅkalpitārthabhāk tām tādṛśīm dṛṣṭvā
13. Madana (the god of love) agitated her, just as an elephant agitates a lotus pond. Then, having seen her in such a state, Śukra, who had achieved his intended purpose (artha)...
तमः संकल्पयामास संहार इव भूतभुक् ।
त्रिविष्टपस्य देशोऽसौ बभूव तिमिराकुलः ॥ १४ ॥
tamaḥ saṃkalpayāmāsa saṃhāra iva bhūtabhuk ,
triviṣṭapasya deśo'sau babhūva timirākulaḥ 14
14. tamaḥ saṅkalpayām āsa saṃhāraḥ iva bhūtabhuk
triviṣṭapasya deśaḥ asau babhūva timirākulaḥ
14. (Śukra) saṃhāraḥ bhūtabhuk iva tamaḥ saṅkalpayām āsa.
asau triviṣṭapasya deśaḥ timirākulaḥ babhūva.
14. ... (Śukra) invoked darkness, just as Bhūtabhuk (Śiva) at the time of cosmic dissolution (saṃhāra). That region of Svarga (heaven) became filled with darkness.
भूलोकस्यान्धतमसा लोकालोकतटो यथा ।
लज्जान्धकारतीक्ष्णांशौ तस्मिंस्तिमिरमण्डले ॥ १५ ॥
bhūlokasyāndhatamasā lokālokataṭo yathā ,
lajjāndhakāratīkṣṇāṃśau tasmiṃstimiramaṇḍale 15
15. bhūlokasya andhatamasā lokālokataṭaḥ yathā
lajjāndhakāratīkṣṇāṃśau tasmin timiramaṇḍale
15. (asau deśaḥ) bhūlokasya andhatamasā,
lokālokataṭaḥ yathā,
(babhūva).
tasmin lajjāndhakāratīkṣṇāṃśau timiramaṇḍale
15. The region (of Svarga) became filled with deep darkness, like the shore of the Lokāloka mountain (is filled) with the deep darkness of the terrestrial world (Bhūloka). In that sphere of darkness, which was sharply dark with the shame-inducing gloom...
प्रतिष्ठामागते तस्य मिथुनस्येव मण्डले ।
तेषु सर्वेषु भूतेषु गतेष्वभिमतां दिशम् ॥ १६ ॥
pratiṣṭhāmāgate tasya mithunasyeva maṇḍale ,
teṣu sarveṣu bhūteṣu gateṣvabhimatāṃ diśam 16
16. pratiṣṭhām āgate tasya mithunasya iva maṇḍale
teṣu sarveṣu bhūteṣu gateṣu abhimatām diśam
16. tasya mithunasya maṇḍale pratiṣṭhām āgate iva,
teṣu sarveṣu bhūteṣu abhimatām diśam gateṣu.
16. As that pair (mithuna) came to rest in their domain, like all other creatures (bhūta) had gone to their desired directions.
तस्मात्प्रदेशाद्भूलोके दिनान्ते विहगेष्विव ।
सा दीर्घचञ्चलापाङ्गी प्रवृद्धमदनव्यथा ॥ १७ ॥
tasmātpradeśādbhūloke dinānte vihageṣviva ,
sā dīrghacañcalāpāṅgī pravṛddhamadanavyathā 17
17. tasmāt pradeśāt bhūloke dinānte vihageṣu iva
sā dīrghacañcalāpāṅgī pravṛddhamadanavyathā
17. tasmāt pradeśāt bhūloke dinānte vihageṣu iva,
sā dīrghacañcalāpāṅgī pravṛddhamadanavyathā.
17. From that region, on earth (bhūloka), just as birds do at the end of the day, she - whose long, restless outer corners of the eyes (apāṅga) betrayed her greatly intensified pangs of love -
आजगाम भृगोः पुत्रं मयूरी वारिदं यथा ।
धवलागारमध्यस्थे पर्यङ्के परिकल्पिते ॥ १८ ॥
ājagāma bhṛgoḥ putraṃ mayūrī vāridaṃ yathā ,
dhavalāgāramadhyasthe paryaṅke parikalpite 18
18. ājagāma bhṛgoḥ putram mayūrī vāridam yathā
dhavalāgāramadhyasthe paryaṅke parikalpite
18. (sā) bhṛgoḥ putram ājagāma,
yathā mayūrī vāridam,
(saḥ) dhavalāgāramadhyasthe parikalpite paryaṅke (āśīnaḥ āsīt).
18. She came to the son of Bhṛgu, just as a peahen (mayūrī) approaches a cloud (vāridam). He was on a well-prepared couch (paryaṅka) situated within a white mansion.
विवेश भार्गवस्तत्र क्षीरोद इव माधवः ।
सा कराववलम्ब्यास्य विवेशावनतानना ॥ १९ ॥
viveśa bhārgavastatra kṣīroda iva mādhavaḥ ,
sā karāvavalambyāsya viveśāvanatānanā 19
19. viveśa bhārgavaḥ tatra kṣīrodaḥ iva mādhavaḥ
sā karau avalambya asya viveśa avanatānanā
19. bhārgavaḥ tatra viveśa,
kṣīrodaḥ mādhavaḥ iva.
sā asya karau avalambya avanatānanā viveśa.
19. The son of Bhṛgu (Bhārgava) entered there, just as Madhava (Viṣṇu) enters the Milk Ocean (kṣīroda). She then entered with a bowed face, taking hold of his two hands.
रराज च सुरेभस्य हृदि लग्नेव पद्मिनी ।
उवाच चेदं मधुरं रसस्नेहाक्तया गिरा ॥ २० ॥
rarāja ca surebhasya hṛdi lagneva padminī ,
uvāca cedaṃ madhuraṃ rasasnehāktayā girā 20
20. rarāja ca surebhasya hṛdi lagnā iva padminī
uvāca ca idam madhuram rasasnehāktayā girā
20. padminī iva surebhasya hṛdi lagnā ca rarāja
ca rasasnehāktayā girā idam madhuram uvāca
20. And like a lotus, she shone, fixed in the heart of the lord of gods, and she spoke these sweet words with a voice imbued with tenderness and affection.
वचो मधुरमानन्दविलासवलिताक्षरम् ।
पश्यामलेन्दुवदनमण्डलीकृतकार्मुकः ॥ २१ ॥
vaco madhuramānandavilāsavalitākṣaram ,
paśyāmalenduvadanamaṇḍalīkṛtakārmukaḥ 21
21. vacaḥ madhuram ānandavilāsavalitākṣaram
paśyāmaleinduvadanamandali-kṛtakārmukaḥ
21. ānandavilāsavalitākṣaram madhuram vacaḥ
paśyāmaleinduvadanamandali-kṛtakārmukaḥ (uvāca iti pūrvapadāt sambandhaḥ)
21. She spoke these sweet words, whose syllables were charming with the play of joy: "O you whose sight is spotless, whose face is like the spotless moon, and whose bow is drawn into a perfect circle!"
अबलामनुबध्नाति मामेष किल नाङ्गकः ।
पाहि मामबलां नाथ दीनां त्वच्छरणामिह ॥ २२ ॥
abalāmanubadhnāti māmeṣa kila nāṅgakaḥ ,
pāhi māmabalāṃ nātha dīnāṃ tvaccharaṇāmiha 22
22. abalām anubadhnāti mām eṣa kila na aṅgakaḥ
pāhi mām abalām nātha dīnām tvaccharaṇām iha
22. eṣa na aṅgakaḥ kila mām abalām anubadhnāti he
nātha mām abalām dīnām tvaccharaṇām iha pāhi
22. This bodiless one (Kāmadeva) indeed binds me, a helpless woman. Protect me, O Lord, a distressed and weak woman who seeks refuge in you here.
कृपणाश्वासनं साधो विद्धि सच्चरितव्रतम् ।
स्नेहदृष्टिमजानद्भिर्मूढैरेव महामते ॥ २३ ॥
kṛpaṇāśvāsanaṃ sādho viddhi saccaritavratam ,
snehadṛṣṭimajānadbhirmūḍhaireva mahāmate 23
23. kṛpaṇāśvāsanam sādho viddhi satcaritavratam
snehadṛṣṭim ajānadbhiḥ mūḍhaiḥ eva mahāmate
23. he sādho he mahāmate kṛpaṇāśvāsanam satcaritavratam
viddhi snehadṛṣṭim mūḍhaiḥ eva ajānadbhiḥ (bhavati)
23. Know, O virtuous one, that comforting the distressed is a vow of good conduct. O great-minded one, a look of affection is understood only by the ignorant.
प्रणया अवगण्यन्ते न रसज्ञैः कदाचन ।
अशङ्कितोपसंपन्नः प्रणयोऽन्योन्यरक्तयोः ॥ २४ ॥
praṇayā avagaṇyante na rasajñaiḥ kadācana ,
aśaṅkitopasaṃpannaḥ praṇayo'nyonyaraktayoḥ 24
24. praṇayāḥ avagaṇyante na rasajñaiḥ kadācana |
aśaṅkitopasaṃpannaḥ praṇayaḥ anyonyaraktayoḥ ||
24. rasajñaiḥ kadācana praṇayāḥ na avagaṇyante
anyonyaraktayoḥ aśaṅkitopasaṃpannaḥ praṇayaḥ
24. Affections (praṇaya) are never disregarded by those who understand emotional essence (rasa). This is particularly true for an affection (praṇaya) that arises unexpectedly between two individuals mutually devoted to each other.
अधःकरोति निष्यन्दं चन्द्रमाह्लादनं प्रिय ।
न तथा सुखयत्येषा चेतस्त्रिभुवनेशिता ॥ २५ ॥
adhaḥkaroti niṣyandaṃ candramāhlādanaṃ priya ,
na tathā sukhayatyeṣā cetastribhuvaneśitā 25
25. adhaḥ karoti niṣyandam candrāhlādanam priya |
na tathā sukhayati eṣā cetaḥ tribhuvaneśitā ||
25. priya,
eṣā candrāhlādanam niṣyandam adhaḥ karoti tribhuvaneśitā tathā cetaḥ na sukhayati
25. Dear one, this [affection] surpasses the moon's delight (āhlādana) and its soothing flow (niṣyanda). Not even the sovereignty over the three worlds (tribhuvana) delights the mind (cetas) as much.
यथा परस्परानन्दः स्नेहः प्रथमरक्तयोः ।
त्वत्पादस्पर्शनेनेयं समाश्वस्तास्मि मानद ॥ २६ ॥
yathā parasparānandaḥ snehaḥ prathamaraktayoḥ ,
tvatpādasparśaneneyaṃ samāśvastāsmi mānada 26
26. yathā parasparānandaḥ snehaḥ prathamaraktayoḥ |
tvatpādasparśanena iyam samāśvastā asmi mānada ||
26. mānada,
yathā prathamaraktayoḥ parasparānandaḥ snehaḥ,
tvatpādasparśanena iyam samāśvastā asmi
26. Just as there is mutual delight (ānanda) and affection (sneha) between two individuals newly fallen in love, so by the touch of your feet, O giver of honor (mānada), I am consoled.
चन्द्रपादपरामृष्टा यथा निशि कुमुद्वती ।
संस्पर्शामृतपानेन तव जीवामि सुन्दर ॥ २७ ॥
candrapādaparāmṛṣṭā yathā niśi kumudvatī ,
saṃsparśāmṛtapānena tava jīvāmi sundara 27
27. candrapādaparāmṛṣṭā yathā niśi kumudvatī |
saṃsparśāmṛtapānena tava jīvāmi sundara ||
27. sundara,
yathā niśi candrapādaparāmṛṣṭā kumudvatī,
tava saṃsparśāmṛtapānena jīvāmi
27. Just as the water lily (kumudvatī) is caressed by the moon's rays (candrapāda) at night, so I live, O beautiful one, by drinking the nectar of your touch (saṃsparśāmṛtapāna).
चन्द्रांशुरसपानेन चकोरी चपला यथा ।
मामिमां चरणालीनां भ्रमरीं करपल्लवैः ॥ २८ ॥
candrāṃśurasapānena cakorī capalā yathā ,
māmimāṃ caraṇālīnāṃ bhramarīṃ karapallavaiḥ 28
28. candra-aṃśu-rasa-pānena cakorī capalā yathā
mām imām caraṇālīnām bhramarīm karapallavaiḥ
28. yathā cakorī candrāṃśurasapānena capalā (bhavati tathā)
mām imām caraṇālīnām bhramarīm karapallavaiḥ (āliṅgya kuru)
28. Just as a restless chakori bird (cakorī) is (eager) by drinking the essence of moonbeams, so (do I, like) this bee (bhramarī) clinging to your feet (caraṇa), (yearn for your) lotus-like hands (karapallava).
आलिङ्ग्यामृतसंपूर्णे स्वपद्महृदये कुरु ।
इत्युक्त्वा पुष्पमृद्वङ्गी सा तस्य पतितोरसि ।
व्याघूर्णितालिनयना सुतरोरिव मञ्जरी ॥ २९ ॥
āliṅgyāmṛtasaṃpūrṇe svapadmahṛdaye kuru ,
ityuktvā puṣpamṛdvaṅgī sā tasya patitorasi ,
vyāghūrṇitālinayanā sutaroriva mañjarī 29
29. āliṅgya amṛtasampūrṇe svapadmahṛdaye
kuru iti uktvā puṣpamṛdvaṅgī
sā tasya patita urasi
vyāghūrṇitālinayanā sutaroḥ iva mañjarī
29. (mām) amṛtasampūrṇe svapadmahṛdaye
āliṅgya kuru iti uktvā sā puṣpamṛdvaṅgī
vyāghūrṇitālinayanā tasya urasi
sutaroḥ mañjarī iva patita (abhavat)
29. "Embrace (me) and place (me) in your lotus-heart (hṛdaya), which is full of nectar (amṛta)." Having said this, she, whose body was soft as a flower, fell upon his chest, her eyes (nayana) restless like bees, just like a blossom fallen from a beautiful tree.

किञ्जल्कगौरानिलघूर्णितासु रक्तौ द्विरेफाविव पद्मिनीषु ॥ ३० ॥

30. Those two, the loving couple, radiant in their playful charm, entered those forest groves (vanasthalī) where the golden pollen-laden winds swirled. They were like two passionate bees (dvirepha) (alighting) upon lotus ponds (padminī).
