अथ सा बहुकालेन कर्कटी नाम राक्षसी ।
सर्वेषां नरमांसानां नतु तृप्तिमुपाययौ ॥ १ ॥

sarveṣāṃ naramāṃsānāṃ natu tṛptimupāyayau 1

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, after a long time, the female demon (rākṣasī) named Karkaṭī could not find satisfaction even with the flesh of all human beings.
पूर्वेणैव किलाह्ना सा तृप्ता रुधिरबिन्दुना ।
सूच्याः किमिव मात्यन्तस्तृष्णासूची सुदुर्भरा ॥ २ ॥
pūrveṇaiva kilāhnā sā tṛptā rudhirabindunā ,
sūcyāḥ kimiva mātyantastṛṣṇāsūcī sudurbharā 2
2. pūrveṇa eva kila ahnā sā tṛptā rudhirabindunā
sūcyāḥ kim iva māti antaḥ tṛṣṇāsūcī sudurbharā
2. kila sā pūrveṇa eva ahnā rudhirabindunā tṛptā (āsīt).
kim iva antaḥ sudurbharā tṛṣṇāsūcī māti (sūcyāḥ iva)?
2. Indeed, previously she was satisfied in a single day with just a drop of blood. How can the extreme, unbearable 'needle of thirst' now be satisfied?
चिन्तयामास हा कष्टं किमहं सूचिता गता ।
सूक्ष्मास्मि हतशक्तिश्च अपि ग्रासो न माति च ॥ ३ ॥
cintayāmāsa hā kaṣṭaṃ kimahaṃ sūcitā gatā ,
sūkṣmāsmi hataśaktiśca api grāso na māti ca 3
3. cintayāmāsa hā kaṣṭam kim aham sūcitā gatā
sūkṣmā asmi hataśaktiḥ ca api grāsaḥ na māti ca
3. hā kaṣṭam! aham kim sūcitā gatā? (aham) sūkṣmā asmi ca hataśaktiḥ (asmi),
ca api grāsaḥ na māti.
3. She pondered: 'Alas, what a misfortune! How have I become so acutely sharp (in my cravings)? I am tiny, my strength is diminished, and even a single morsel fails to satisfy.'
क्व मे तानि विशालानि गतान्यङ्गानि दुर्धियः ।
कालमेघविशालानि वने शीर्णानि पर्णवत् ॥ ४ ॥
kva me tāni viśālāni gatānyaṅgāni durdhiyaḥ ,
kālameghaviśālāni vane śīrṇāni parṇavat 4
4. kva me tāni viśālāni gatāni aṅgāni durdhiyaḥ
| kālameghaviśālāni vane śīrṇāni parṇavat ||
4. me durdhiyaḥ tāni viśālāni kālameghaviśālāni aṅgāni kva gatāni? vane parṇavat śīrṇāni.
4. Where have those vast limbs of my foolish self gone, which were as immense as dark clouds? They have withered in the forest just like leaves.
मय्यस्यां मन्दभाग्यायां मनागपि न माति हि ।
स्वादुमांसरसग्रासो वसावासित आसयन् ॥ ५ ॥
mayyasyāṃ mandabhāgyāyāṃ manāgapi na māti hi ,
svādumāṃsarasagrāso vasāvāsita āsayan 5
5. mayi asyām mandabhāgyāyām manāk api na māti hi
| svādumāṃsarasagrāsaḥ vasāvāsitaḥ āsayān ||
5. hi asyām mandabhāgyāyām mayi manāk api svādumāṃsarasagrāsaḥ vasāvāsitaḥ āsayān na māti.
5. Indeed, even a tiny morsel of delicious meat juice, flavored with fat and filling the mouth, does not fit into this unfortunate body of mine.
पङ्कान्तर्विनिमज्जामि पतामि धरणीतले ।
हस्तास्मि जनपादौघैः शुक्रेण मलिनास्मि च ॥ ६ ॥
paṅkāntarvinimajjāmi patāmi dharaṇītale ,
hastāsmi janapādaughaiḥ śukreṇa malināsmi ca 6
6. paṅkāntar vinimajjāmi patāmi dharaṇītale | hastā
asmi janapādaugaiḥ śukreṇa malinā asmi ca ||
6. aham paṅkāntar vinimajjāmi,
(aham) dharaṇītale patāmi.
(aham) janapādaugaiḥ hastā asmi,
ca śukreṇa malinā asmi.
6. I sink into the mud, and I fall onto the ground. I am trampled by crowds of people's feet, and I am defiled by semen.
हा हताहमनाथाहमनाश्वासा निरास्पदा ।
दुःखाद्दुःखे निमज्जामि संकटात्संकटेऽपि च ॥ ७ ॥
hā hatāhamanāthāhamanāśvāsā nirāspadā ,
duḥkhādduḥkhe nimajjāmi saṃkaṭātsaṃkaṭe'pi ca 7
7. hā hatā aham anāthā aham anāśvāsā nirāspadā |
duḥkhāt duḥkhe nimajjāmi saṅkaṭāt saṅkaṭe api ca ||
7. hā! aham hatā,
aham anāthā,
anāśvāsā,
nirāspadā (asmi).
(aham) duḥkhāt duḥkhe nimajjāmi,
ca api saṅkaṭāt saṅkaṭe (nimajjāmi).
7. Alas! I am ruined, I am helpless, without comfort, and without refuge. I sink from one sorrow into another sorrow, and moreover, from one danger into another danger.
न सखी न च मे दासी न मे माता न मे पिता ।
न मे बन्धुर्न मे भृत्या न मे भ्राता न मे सुतः ॥ ८ ॥
na sakhī na ca me dāsī na me mātā na me pitā ,
na me bandhurna me bhṛtyā na me bhrātā na me sutaḥ 8
8. na sakhī na ca me dāsī na me mātā na me pitā na
me bandhuḥ na me bhṛtyāḥ na me bhrātā na me sutaḥ
8. me sakhī na ca me dāsī na me mātā na me pitā na
me bandhuḥ na me bhṛtyāḥ na me bhrātā na me sutaḥ
8. I have no female companion, no maidservant, no mother, no father, no relatives, no servants, no brother, and no son.
न मे देहो न मे स्थानं न मे कश्चित्समाश्रयः ।
नैकस्थाने समावासो भ्राम्यामि वनपर्णवत् ॥ ९ ॥
na me deho na me sthānaṃ na me kaścitsamāśrayaḥ ,
naikasthāne samāvāso bhrāmyāmi vanaparṇavat 9
9. na me dehaḥ na me sthānam na me kaścit samāśrayaḥ
na eka-sthāne samāvāsaḥ bhrāmyāmi vana-parṇavat
9. me dehaḥ na me sthānam na me kaścit samāśrayaḥ.
eka-sthāne samāvāsaḥ na.
vana-parṇavat bhrāmyāmi.
9. I have no body, no fixed place, and no support of any kind. I have no permanent dwelling, and I wander like a leaf in the forest.
आपदां धुरि तिष्ठामि निविष्टास्मि सुदारुणे ।
अभावमपि वाञ्छामि सोऽपि संपद्यते न मे ॥ १० ॥
āpadāṃ dhuri tiṣṭhāmi niviṣṭāsmi sudāruṇe ,
abhāvamapi vāñchāmi so'pi saṃpadyate na me 10
10. āpadām dhuri tiṣṭhāmi niviṣṭā asmi su-dāruṇe
abhāvam api vāñchāmi saḥ api sampadyate na me
10. āpadām dhuri su-dāruṇe niviṣṭā asmi tiṣṭhāmi.
abhāvam api vāñchāmi.
saḥ api me na sampadyate.
10. I find myself at the forefront of great calamities, deeply immersed in terrible suffering. I even desire non-existence, but even that is not granted to me.
स्वको देहः परित्यक्तो मूढचेतनया मया ।
काचबुद्ध्या विमूढेन हस्ताच्चिन्तामणिर्यथा ॥ ११ ॥
svako dehaḥ parityakto mūḍhacetanayā mayā ,
kācabuddhyā vimūḍhena hastāccintāmaṇiryathā 11
11. svakaḥ dehaḥ parityaktaḥ mūḍha-cetanayā mayā
kāca-buddhyā vimūḍhena hastāt cintāmaṇiḥ yathā
11. mayā mūḍha-cetanayā svakaḥ dehaḥ parityaktaḥ.
yathā vimūḍhena kāca-buddhyā hastāt cintāmaṇiḥ (parityaktaḥ).
11. My own body was abandoned by me, due to a deluded consciousness. It was like a deluded person casting a wish-fulfilling jewel (cintāmaṇi) from their hand, mistaking it for mere glass.
आपतद्धि मनो मोहं पूर्वमापत्प्रयच्छति ।
पश्चादनर्थविस्ताररूपेण परिजृम्भते ॥ १२ ॥
āpataddhi mano mohaṃ pūrvamāpatprayacchati ,
paścādanarthavistārarūpeṇa parijṛmbhate 12
12. āpatat hi manaḥ moham pūrvam āpat prayacchati
paścāt anarthavistārarūpeṇa parijṛmbhate
12. manaḥ moham āpatat hi pūrvam āpat prayacchati
paścāt anarthavistārarūpeṇa parijṛmbhate
12. When the mind falls into delusion (moha), it first brings about misfortune. Later, it expands and manifests in the form of extensive troubles.
धूमेषु परितिष्ठामि मार्गे विलुलितास्मि च ।
तृणेषु प्रेषितास्म्यन्तर्हा मे दुःखपरम्परा ॥ १३ ॥
dhūmeṣu paritiṣṭhāmi mārge vilulitāsmi ca ,
tṛṇeṣu preṣitāsmyantarhā me duḥkhaparamparā 13
13. dhūmeṣu paritiṣṭhāmi mārge vilulitā asmi ca
tṛṇeṣu preṣitā asmi antar hā me duḥkhaparamparā
13. aham dhūmeṣu paritiṣṭhāmi ca mārge vilulitā asmi
tṛṇeṣu preṣitā asmi antar me duḥkhaparamparā hā
13. I wander amidst smoke, and I am tossed about on the path. I am driven among the blades of grass. Alas, within me lies a continuous succession of suffering.
परप्रैषकरी नित्यं परसंचारचारिणी ।
परं कार्पण्यमायाता जाता परवशास्म्यलम् ॥ १४ ॥
parapraiṣakarī nityaṃ parasaṃcāracāriṇī ,
paraṃ kārpaṇyamāyātā jātā paravaśāsmyalam 14
14. parapraiṣakarī nityam parasaṃcāracāriṇī
param kārpaṇyam āyātā jātā paravaśā asmi alam
14. aham nityam parapraiṣakarī parasaṃcāracāriṇī
param kārpaṇyam āyātā asmi alam paravaśā jātā
14. I am constantly a messenger for others, always wandering for their errands. Having reached the utmost wretchedness, I have truly become entirely dependent on others.
भ्रान्तिं करोमि तुच्छे च सापि वेधनरूपिणी ।
अहो ममाल्पभाग्याया दौर्भाग्यमपि दुर्भगम् ॥ १५ ॥
bhrāntiṃ karomi tucche ca sāpi vedhanarūpiṇī ,
aho mamālpabhāgyāyā daurbhāgyamapi durbhagam 15
15. bhrāntim karomi tuccha ca sā api vedhanarūpiṇī
aho mama alpabhāgyāyā daurbhāgyam api durbhagam
15. aham tuccha ca bhrāntim karomi sā api vedhanarūpiṇī
aho mama alpabhāgyāyā daurbhāgyam api durbhagam
15. I commit a delusion (bhrānti) even in trivial matters, and that delusion (bhrānti) itself becomes a form of torment. Oh, for me, the one with little fortune, even my misfortune (daurbhāgya) is wretched!
उत्थितः स्फारवेतालः कुर्वत्याः शान्तिमद्य मे ।
सर्वनाशोऽवदातेन प्रवृत्ताया ममोदिता ॥ १६ ॥
utthitaḥ sphāravetālaḥ kurvatyāḥ śāntimadya me ,
sarvanāśo'vadātena pravṛttāyā mamoditā 16
16. utthitaḥ sphāravetālaḥ kurvatyāḥ śāntim adya me
| sarvanāśaḥ avadātena pravṛttāyāḥ mama uditā ||
16. स्फारवेतालः उत्थितः अद्य शान्तिम् कुर्वत्याः मे प्रवृत्तायाः मम (मतिः) सर्वनाशः अवदातेन उदिता (अस्ति) ।
16. A formidable ghost (vetāla) has arisen. Today, as I, who am engaged in cultivating peace (śānti), my own mind (mati) has arisen with the thought that complete destruction (sarvanāśa) has been declared for me by a pure being, as I have already committed myself [to this path].
किं मन्दया मया तादृक्संत्यक्तं तन्महावपुः ।
यथा नाशेन वा भाव्यं तथोदेत्यशुभा मतिः ॥ १७ ॥
kiṃ mandayā mayā tādṛksaṃtyaktaṃ tanmahāvapuḥ ,
yathā nāśena vā bhāvyaṃ tathodetyaśubhā matiḥ 17
17. kim mandayā mayā tādṛk saṃtyaktam tat mahāvapuḥ |
yathā nāśena vā bhāvyam tathā uda eti aśubhā matiḥ ||
17. किम् मन्दया मया तादृक् तत् महावपुः संत्यक्तम् यथा नाशेन वा भाव्यम् तथा अशुभा मतिः उद एति ।
17. Why was that grand body (mahāvapus) abandoned by me, so dull-witted? My inauspicious thought (mati) arises, suggesting that ruin (nāśa) is inevitable.
मामवान्तरनिर्मग्नां सूक्ष्मां कीटतनोरपि ।
उद्धरिष्यति को नाम पांसुराशिभिरावृताम् ॥ १८ ॥
māmavāntaranirmagnāṃ sūkṣmāṃ kīṭatanorapi ,
uddhariṣyati ko nāma pāṃsurāśibhirāvṛtām 18
18. mām avāntaranirmagnām sūkṣmām kīṭatanoḥ api |
uddhariṣyati kaḥ nāma pāṃsurāśibhiḥ āvṛtām ||
18. कः नाम माम् अवान्तरनिर्मग्नाम् कीटतनोः अपि सूक्ष्माम् पांसुराशिभिः आवृताम् उद्धरिष्यति ।
18. Who indeed will lift me up, who am deeply submerged in the intermediate space, subtle even beyond an insect's body, and completely covered by heaps of dust?
विविक्तमनसां बुद्धौ क्व स्फुरन्ति हताशयाः ।
ग्राममार्गतृणानीव गिरेरुपरिवासिनाम् ॥ १९ ॥
viviktamanasāṃ buddhau kva sphuranti hatāśayāḥ ,
grāmamārgatṛṇānīva gireruparivāsinām 19
19. viviktamanasām buddhau kva sphuranti hatāśayāḥ
| grāmamārga-tṛṇāni iva gireḥ uparivāsinām ||
19. विविक्तमनसाम् गिरेः उपरिवासिनाम् बुद्धौ हताशयाः ग्राममार्गतृणानि इव क्व स्फुरन्ति ।
19. Where do such despondent thoughts (hatāśayāḥ) manifest in the intellect (buddhi) of those with purified minds (viviktamanas)? It is like blades of grass on a village path appearing [insignificant] to those who reside high upon a mountain.
स्थिताया अज्ञताम्भोधौ क्व ममाभ्युदयो भवेत् ।
अन्धस्योदेति प्राकाश्यं नखद्योतानुसेविनः ॥ २० ॥
sthitāyā ajñatāmbhodhau kva mamābhyudayo bhavet ,
andhasyodeti prākāśyaṃ nakhadyotānusevinaḥ 20
20. sthitāyāḥ ajñatā-ambhodhau kva mama abhyudayaḥ bhavet
andhasya udeti prākāśyam nakha-dyota-anusevinaḥ
20. ajñatā-ambhodhau sthitāyāḥ mama abhyudayaḥ kva bhavet
andhasya nakha-dyota-anusevinaḥ prākāśyam udeti
20. How can there be any progress for me, immersed as I am in the ocean of ignorance (ajñatā)? For a blind person relying on the meager light of a fingernail, true illumination does not arise.
अतः कियन्तं नो जाने कालमावलितापदम् ।
मयापच्छ्वभ्रगर्तेषु लुठितव्यं हतेहया ॥ २१ ॥
ataḥ kiyantaṃ no jāne kālamāvalitāpadam ,
mayāpacchvabhragarteṣu luṭhitavyaṃ hatehayā 21
21. ataḥ kiyantam na jāne kālam āvalita-āpadam mayā
āpat-śvabhra-garteṣu luṭhitavyam hata-īhayā
21. ataḥ āvalita-āpadam kiyantam kālam na jāne.
hata-īhayā mayā āpat-śvabhra-garteṣu luṭhitavyam.
21. Therefore, I do not know for how long I must endure this period fraught with misfortunes. With my aspirations thwarted, I am destined to be tossed about in the abysses of calamity (āpad).
कदा स्यामञ्जनमहाशैलपुत्रकरूपिणी ।
द्यावापृथिव्योर्वैधुर्ये स्तम्भतामनुतिष्ठत ॥ २२ ॥
kadā syāmañjanamahāśailaputrakarūpiṇī ,
dyāvāpṛthivyorvaidhurye stambhatāmanutiṣṭhata 22
22. kadā syām añjana-mahā-śaila-putraka-rūpiṇī
dyāvā-pṛthivyoḥ vaidhurye stambhatām anutiṣṭhat
22. kadā dyāvā-pṛthivyoḥ vaidhurye stambhatām
anutiṣṭhat añjana-mahā-śaila-putraka-rūpiṇī syām
22. When shall I become like the son of the great Añjana mountain (Hanuman), upholding the heavens and earth as a pillar during their separation?
मेघमालासमभुजा चिरं विद्युत्पदेक्षणा ।
नीहारजालवसना प्रोच्चकेशमिताम्बरा ॥ २३ ॥
meghamālāsamabhujā ciraṃ vidyutpadekṣaṇā ,
nīhārajālavasanā proccakeśamitāmbarā 23
23. megha-mālā-sama-bhujā ciram vidyut-pada-īkṣaṇā
nīhāra-jāla-vasanā procca-keśa-mita-ambarā
23. megha-mālā-sama-bhujā ciram vidyut-pada-īkṣaṇā
nīhāra-jāla-vasanā procca-keśa-mita-ambarā
23. (She is described as having) arms like rows of clouds, a gaze like sustained flashes of lightning (vidyut), a garment made of a network of mist, and towering hair that reaches the sky.
लम्बोदराभ्रसंदर्शप्रनर्तितशिखण्डिनी ।
लम्बलोलस्तनी श्यामा देहवातद्रवत्स्तनी ॥ २४ ॥
lambodarābhrasaṃdarśapranartitaśikhaṇḍinī ,
lambalolastanī śyāmā dehavātadravatstanī 24
24. lambodarābhrasaṃdarśapranartitaśikhaṇḍinī
lambalolastanī śyāmā dehavātadravatstanī

24. She, the dark-complexioned one (śyāmā), causes peacocks to dance at the sight of her form, which resembles a vast, dark cloud; she has long, swinging breasts, and her breasts seem to flow or intensely quiver from the vital currents within her body.
हासभस्मच्छटाच्छन्नसूर्यमण्डलरोधिनी ।
कृतान्तग्रसनोद्युक्तकृत्यैकाकृतिधारिणी ॥ २५ ॥
hāsabhasmacchaṭācchannasūryamaṇḍalarodhinī ,
kṛtāntagrasanodyuktakṛtyaikākṛtidhāriṇī 25
25. hāsabhasmacchaṭācchannasūryamaṇḍalarodhinī
kṛtāntagrasanodyuktakṛtyaikākṛtidhāriṇī
25. hāsabhasmacchaṭācchannasūryamaṇḍalarodhinī
kṛtāntagrasanodyuktakṛtyaikākṛtidhāriṇī
25. She obstructs the disc of the sun, which is veiled by the masses of ash rising from her laughter; and she embodies a unique form of destructive power (kṛtyā), intent on devouring even the god of death (Kṛtānta).
कृशानूलूखलदृशा सूर्यस्रग्दामहारिणी ।
पर्वतात्पर्वते शृङ्गे न्यस्य पादौ विहारिणी ॥ २६ ॥
kṛśānūlūkhaladṛśā sūryasragdāmahāriṇī ,
parvatātparvate śṛṅge nyasya pādau vihāriṇī 26
26. kṛśānūlūkhala-dṛśā sūryasragdāmahāriṇī
parvatāt parvate śṛṅge nyasya pādau vihāriṇī
26. kṛśānūlūkhala-dṛśā sūryasragdāmahāriṇī
vihāriṇī pādau nyasya parvatāt parvate śṛṅge
26. With eyes like fiery pestles, wearing a garland of suns, she roams by placing her feet from one mountain peak to another.
कदा मे स्याद्गुरुश्वभ्रभासुरं तन्महोदरम् ।
कदा मे स्याच्छरन्मेघमेदुरा नखरावली ॥ २७ ॥
kadā me syādguruśvabhrabhāsuraṃ tanmahodaram ,
kadā me syāccharanmeghamedurā nakharāvalī 27
27. kadā me syāt guruśvabhrabhāsuram tat mahodaram
kadā me syāt śaranmeghamedurā nakharāvalī
27. kadā me tat mahodaram guruśvabhrabhāsuram syāt
kadā me nakharāvalī śaranmeghamedurā syāt
27. When will that great belly (mahodara), shining like a vast abyss, be mine? When will the line of claws, lustrous like autumn clouds, be mine?
कदा मे स्यान्महारक्षोविद्रावणकरं स्मितम् ।
स्वस्फिग्वाद्यैररण्यान्यां कदा नृत्येयमुन्मदा ॥ २८ ॥
kadā me syānmahārakṣovidrāvaṇakaraṃ smitam ,
svasphigvādyairaraṇyānyāṃ kadā nṛtyeyamunmadā 28
28. kadā me syāt mahārakṣovidrāvaṇakaram smitam
svasphigvādyaiḥ araṇyānyām kadā nṛtyeyam unmadā
28. kadā me mahārakṣovidrāvaṇakaram smitam syāt
kadā unmadā svasphigvādyaiḥ araṇyānyām nṛtyeyam
28. When will I possess a smile capable of scattering great demons? When will I, in a frenzied state, dance in the great forest to the rhythmic sounds of my own slapping thighs?
वसासवमहाकुम्भैर्मृतमांसास्थिसंचयैः ।
कदा करिष्येऽविरतं मेदुरोदरपूरणम् ॥ २९ ॥
vasāsavamahākumbhairmṛtamāṃsāsthisaṃcayaiḥ ,
kadā kariṣye'virataṃ medurodarapūraṇam 29
29. vasāsavamahākumbhaiḥ mṛtamāṃsāsthisamcayaiḥ
kadā kariṣye aviratam medurodarapūraṇam
29. kadā aviratam vasāsavamahākumbhaiḥ
mṛtamāṃsāsthisamcayaiḥ medurodarapūraṇam kariṣye
29. When will I incessantly fill my corpulent belly with large jars of fatty extracts and heaps of dead flesh and bones?
कदा पीतमहालोकरुधिरा क्षीबतां गता ।
भवेयं मुदिता दृप्ता मुद्रिता निद्रया ततः ॥ ३० ॥
kadā pītamahālokarudhirā kṣībatāṃ gatā ,
bhaveyaṃ muditā dṛptā mudritā nidrayā tataḥ 30
30. kadā pītamahālokarudhirā kṣībatām gatā
bhaveyam muditā dṛptā mudritā nidrayā tataḥ
30. kadā pītamahālokarudhirā kṣībatām gatā
tataḥ nidrayā muditā dṛptā mudritā bhaveyam
30. When will I, having consumed the blood of great multitudes and attained intoxication, then be joyful, sated, and overcome by sleep?
मयैव कुतपोवह्नौ तदन्यं भासुरं वपुः ।
भस्मत्वं कनकेनेव सूचित्वमुररीकृतम् ॥ ३१ ॥
mayaiva kutapovahnau tadanyaṃ bhāsuraṃ vapuḥ ,
bhasmatvaṃ kanakeneva sūcitvamurarīkṛtam 31
31. mayā eva kutapovahnau tat anyam bhāsuram vapuḥ
bhasmatvam kanakena iva sūcitvam urarīkṛtam
31. mayā eva kutapovahnau tat anyam bhāsuram vapuḥ
bhasmatvam sūcitvam kanakena iva urarīkṛtam
31. Indeed, that other splendid body was reduced to ashes by me in the fire of austerity (tapas). Its subtle essence was then assumed, just as gold's (purity) is revealed by fire.
क्व किलाञ्जनशैलाभं वपुर्भरितदिक्तटम् ।
क्व प्राचिकाखुरसमं सूचित्वं तृणपेलवम् ॥ ३२ ॥
kva kilāñjanaśailābhaṃ vapurbharitadiktaṭam ,
kva prācikākhurasamaṃ sūcitvaṃ tṛṇapelavam 32
32. kva kila añjanaśailābham vapuḥ bharita-dik-taṭam
kva prācikākhurasamam sūcitvam tṛṇapelavam
32. kila añjanaśailābham bharitadiktatām vapuḥ
kva prācikākhurasamam tṛṇapelavam sūcitvam kva
32. Where, indeed, is that body (vapuḥ) that resembled a mountain of collyrium (añjanaśailābham) and filled the horizons and directions? And where is this present needle-like minuteness (sūcitvam), comparable to an ant's claw and as frail as a blade of grass?
त्यजत्याशु मृदित्यज्ञः प्राप्यापि कनकाङ्गदम् ।
मया सूचित्वलोभेन संत्यक्तं भासुरं वपुः ॥ ३३ ॥
tyajatyāśu mṛdityajñaḥ prāpyāpi kanakāṅgadam ,
mayā sūcitvalobhena saṃtyaktaṃ bhāsuraṃ vapuḥ 33
33. tyajati āśu mṛt iti ajñaḥ prāpya api kanaka-aṅgadam
mayā sūcitva-lobhena saṃtyaktam bhāsuram vapuḥ
33. ajñaḥ iti mṛt prāpya api kanaka-aṅgadam āśu tyajati
mayā sūcitva-lobhena bhāsuram vapuḥ saṃtyaktam
33. An ignorant person (ajñaḥ) quickly abandons clay (mṛt) even after obtaining a golden armlet. By me, out of greed for minuteness (sūcitvalobhena), a lustrous body (bhāsuraṃ vapuḥ) was abandoned.
हा महोदर विन्ध्याद्रिसनीहारगुहोपम ।
अद्य नान्तं करोषि त्वं कथं सिंहेन हस्तिनाम् ॥ ३४ ॥
hā mahodara vindhyādrisanīhāraguhopama ,
adya nāntaṃ karoṣi tvaṃ kathaṃ siṃhena hastinām 34
34. hā mahodara vindhya-adri-sa-nīhāra-guha-upama
adya na antam karoṣi tvam katham siṃhena hastinām
34. hā mahodara vindhya-adri-sa-nīhāra-guha-upama
tvam adya katham siṃhena hastinām antam na karoṣi
34. Alas, Mahodara, you who resemble a snow-filled cave in the Vindhya mountains! Why do you not, like a lion, put an end to the elephants today?
हा भुजौ भरनिर्भग्नशिखरौ शशभृन्नखैः ।
पुरोडाशधिया चन्द्रं कथमद्य न बाधतः ॥ ३५ ॥
hā bhujau bharanirbhagnaśikharau śaśabhṛnnakhaiḥ ,
puroḍāśadhiyā candraṃ kathamadya na bādhataḥ 35
35. hā bhujau bhara-nirbhagna-śikharau śaśa-bhṛt-nakhaiḥ
puroḍāśa-dhiyā candram katham adya na bādhataḥ
35. hā bhujau bhara-nirbhagna-śikharau śaśa-bhṛt-nakhaiḥ
adya katham puroḍāśa-dhiyā candram na bādhataḥ
35. Alas, my two arms (bhujau), whose peaks were broken by the burden and by the claws of the moon! Why do they not today harass (bādhataḥ) the moon (candraṃ), mistaking it for a sacrificial cake (puroḍāśadhiyā)?
हा वक्षः काचवैधुर्यगिरीन्द्रतटसुन्दर ।
नाद्य सिंहादि यौकं तद्धृतं रोमवनं तथा ॥ ३६ ॥
hā vakṣaḥ kācavaidhuryagirīndrataṭasundara ,
nādya siṃhādi yaukaṃ taddhṛtaṃ romavanaṃ tathā 36
36. hā vakṣaḥ kācavaidhurya-girīndra-taṭasundara na
adya siṃhādi yaukaṃ tat dhṛtaṃ romavanaṃ tathā
36. hā vakṣaḥ kācavaidhurya-girīndra-taṭasundara adya
tat siṃhādi yaukaṃ tathā romavanaṃ na dhṛtam
36. Alas, O chest, once beautiful like the slope of a great mountain, but now with the dimness of glass! Today, neither that lion-like youthful vigor nor that thick forest of hair is borne by you anymore.
हा नेत्रे कृष्णरजनीरजःशुष्केन्धनैजने ।
कस्मान्न मे भूषयतो दृग्ज्वालामालया दिश ॥ ३७ ॥
hā netre kṛṣṇarajanīrajaḥśuṣkendhanaijane ,
kasmānna me bhūṣayato dṛgjvālāmālayā diśa 37
37. hā netre kṛṣṇarajanīrajaḥśuṣkendhanejane
kasmāt na me bhūṣayataḥ dṛgjvālāmālayā diśaḥ
37. hā netre kṛṣṇarajanīrajaḥśuṣkendhanejane
kasmāt me diśaḥ dṛgjvālāmālayā na bhūṣayataḥ
37. Alas, O eyes, you who were like igniters of dry fuel from the soot of the darkest night! Why do you no longer adorn the directions for me with a garland of fiery glances?
हा स्कन्ध बन्धो नष्टोऽसि निषिद्धोऽसि महीतले ।
कालेन विनिपिष्टोऽसि निघृष्टोऽसि शिलातले ॥ ३८ ॥
hā skandha bandho naṣṭo'si niṣiddho'si mahītale ,
kālena vinipiṣṭo'si nighṛṣṭo'si śilātale 38
38. hā skandha bandho naṣṭaḥ asi niṣiddhaḥ asi mahītale
kālena vinipiṣṭaḥ asi nighṛṣṭaḥ asi śilātale
38. hā skandha bandho tvam naṣṭaḥ asi mahītale niṣiddhaḥ
asi kālena vinipiṣṭaḥ asi śilātale nighṛṣṭaḥ asi
38. Alas, O shoulder, my companion! You are lost, you are immobilized on the earth. By time, you are crushed, you are rubbed against the stone ground.
हा मुखेन्दो तपसि किं नाद्य त्वं मम रश्मिभिः ।
कल्पान्तदावसंशान्तचन्द्रबिम्बमनोहर ॥ ३९ ॥
hā mukhendo tapasi kiṃ nādya tvaṃ mama raśmibhiḥ ,
kalpāntadāvasaṃśāntacandrabimbamanohara 39
39. hā mukhendo tapasi kim na adya tvaṃ mama
raśmibhiḥ kalpāntadāvasaṃśāntacandrabimbamanohara
39. hā mukhendo kalpāntadāvasaṃśāntacandrabimbamanohara
kim adya tvam mama raśmibhiḥ tapasi na
39. Alas, O moon-face, (you who were once) charming like the moon disc completely extinguished by the cosmic conflagration at the end of a world-cycle (kalpa)! Why today do you not radiate brilliance (tapas) for me with your rays?
हा हा हस्तौ महाकारौ तावद्य क्व गतौ मम ।
संपन्नास्मि महासूचिर्मक्षिकाखुरदोलिता ॥ ४० ॥
hā hā hastau mahākārau tāvadya kva gatau mama ,
saṃpannāsmi mahāsūcirmakṣikākhuradolitā 40
40. hā hā hastau mahākārau tāvat adya kva gatau mama
| sampannā asmi mahāsūciḥ makṣikākhuradolitā ||
40. hā hā mama mahākārau hastau adya tāvat kva
gatau sampannā asmi makṣikākhuradolitā mahāsūciḥ
40. Alas, alas! Where have my two gigantic hands gone today? I have become a great needle, swayed (dolitā) by a fly's foot.
हा भगोग्रकरञ्जाढ्यसत्कन्दश्वभ्रशोभन ।
विन्ध्याद्वरेण्यविपुलनितम्बामलबिम्बक ॥ ४१ ॥
hā bhagograkarañjāḍhyasatkandaśvabhraśobhana ,
vindhyādvareṇyavipulanitambāmalabimbaka 41
41. hā bhagograkarañjāḍhyasatkandaśvabhraśobhana
| vindhyādvareṇyavipulanitambāmalabimbaka ||

vindhyādvareṇyavipulanitambāmalabimbaka
41. Alas! O glorious one, magnificent with deep-rooted chasms, abundant with formidable, majestic (bhaga) Karañja trees! O venerable Vindhya mountain, whose vast, spotless slopes (nitamba) are like a rounded disc (bimbaka)!
क्वाकारोऽम्बरपूरकः क्व च नवं तुच्छात्मसूचीवपू ।
रोदोरन्ध्रसमं क्व वास्य कुहरं क्वेदं च सूचीमुखम् ।
क्व ग्रासो बहुमांसभारबहुलः क्वाब्बिन्दुना भोजनं ।
सूक्ष्मास्म्येतदहो मयैव रचितं स्वात्मक्षये नाटकम् ॥ ४२ ॥
kvākāro'mbarapūrakaḥ kva ca navaṃ tucchātmasūcīvapū ,
rodorandhrasamaṃ kva vāsya kuharaṃ kvedaṃ ca sūcīmukham ,
kva grāso bahumāṃsabhārabahulaḥ kvābbindunā bhojanaṃ ,
sūkṣmāsmyetadaho mayaiva racitaṃ svātmakṣaye nāṭakam 42
42. kva ākāraḥ ambara-pūrakaḥ kva ca navam tuccha-ātma-sūcī-vapū |
rodas-randhra-samam kva vā asya kuharam kva idam ca sūcī-mukham
| kva grāsaḥ bahu-māṃsa-bhāra-bahulaḥ kva ap-bindunā bhojanam
| sūkṣmā asmi etat aho mayā eva racitam sva-ātma-kṣaye nāṭakam ||
42. kva ambara-pūrakaḥ ākāraḥ kva ca navam tuccha-ātma-sūcī-vapū
kva vā rodas-randhra-samam asya kuharam kva ca idam sūcī-mukham
kva bahu-māṃsa-bhāra-bahulaḥ grāsaḥ kva ap-bindunā bhojanam
aho etat nāṭakam mayā eva sva-ātma-kṣaye racitam sūkṣmā asmi
42. Where is that form (ākāra) that filled the sky, and where is this new, insignificant needle-like body (vapus)? Where was its cavernous hollow, like the chasm of heaven and earth, and where is this needle's point (mukham)? Where was the enormous meal, rich with a great mass of flesh, and where is this meal of just a drop of water? I am minute! Oh, this drama of my own self-destruction (ātman) was created by me alone.
