1. Śrī Vālmīki said: With his mind thus engaged in such noble and profound contemplation, that night passed for him, just as it passes for a lotus longing for the sun.
किंचित्तमःकडारासु किंचिदप्यरुणासु च ।
नभोविरलतारासु दिक्षु संमार्जितास्विव ॥ २ ॥
kiṃcittamaḥkaḍārāsu kiṃcidapyaruṇāsu ca ,
nabhoviralatārāsu dikṣu saṃmārjitāsviva 2
2. kiñcit tamaḥkaḍārāsu kiñcit api aruṇāsu ca

2. In the directions, which were somewhat dark and also slightly reddish, with sparse stars in the sky, as if they had been swept clean.
प्रभाततूर्यघोषेण सममिन्दुसमाननः ।
उत्तस्थौ राघवः श्रीमान्पद्मः पद्मकरादिव ॥ ३ ॥
prabhātatūryaghoṣeṇa samamindusamānanaḥ ,
uttasthau rāghavaḥ śrīmānpadmaḥ padmakarādiva 3
3. prabhātatūryaghoṣeṇa samam indusamānanaḥ

3. The glorious Rāghava, whose face was like the moon, rose up with the sound of the morning trumpets, just as a lotus (padma) rises from a lotus pond.
प्रातःस्नानविधिं कृत्वा संपाद्य भ्रातृभिः पुनः ।
प्रहिताल्पपरीवारो वसिष्ठसदनं ययौ ॥ ४ ॥

4. After performing the morning bath ritual and making arrangements again with his brothers, he, accompanied by only a small retinue, went to the abode of Vasiṣṭha.
समाधिसंस्थमेकान्ते मुनिमात्मपरायणम् ।
दूर एवाननामासौ रामो विनतकन्धरः ॥ ५ ॥
samādhisaṃsthamekānte munimātmaparāyaṇam ,
dūra evānanāmāsau rāmo vinatakandharaḥ 5
5. samādhisamstham ekānte munim ātmaparāyaṇam
dūre eva ānanāma asau rāmaḥ vinatakandharaḥ
5. asau rāmaḥ vinatakandharaḥ ekānte samādhisamstham
ātmaparāyaṇam munim dūre eva ānanāma
5. Rāma, with a bowed neck, bowed down from a distance to that sage (muni) who was established in meditative absorption (samādhi) in a solitary place and was devoted to the Self (ātman).
तं प्रणम्याङ्गणे तस्थुस्तस्मिंस्ते विनयान्विताः ।
यावत्तमः समालूनं व्यक्तं दिङ्मुखमण्डलम् ॥ ६ ॥
taṃ praṇamyāṅgaṇe tasthustasmiṃste vinayānvitāḥ ,
yāvattamaḥ samālūnaṃ vyaktaṃ diṅmukhamaṇḍalam 6
6. tam praṇamya aṅgaṇe tasthuḥ tasmin te vinayānvitāḥ
yāvat tamaḥ samālūnam vyaktam diṅmukham-aṇḍalam
6. te vinayānvitāḥ tam praṇamya aṅgaṇe tasthuḥ
yāvat tamaḥ samālūnam diṅmukham-aṇḍalam vyaktam
6. They bowed to him and, filled with humility, stood in the courtyard until the darkness was completely dispelled and the expanse of the directions became clear.
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च ऋषयो ब्राह्मणास्ततः ।
आययुः सदनं मौनं ब्रह्मलोकमिवामराः ॥ ७ ॥
rājāno rājaputrāśca ṛṣayo brāhmaṇāstataḥ ,
āyayuḥ sadanaṃ maunaṃ brahmalokamivāmarāḥ 7
7. rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca ṛṣayaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ tataḥ
āyayuḥ sadanam maunam brahmalokam iva amarāḥ
7. rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca ṛṣayaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ tataḥ
amarāḥ brahmalokam iva maunam sadanam āyayuḥ
7. Kings, princes, sages, and then brahmins arrived at the tranquil dwelling, just as immortals arrive at the world of Brahma (brahman).
तद्वसिष्ठस्य सदनं बभूव जनसंकुलम् ।
हस्त्यश्वरथसंबाधं पार्थिवाचारशोभनम् ॥ ८ ॥
tadvasiṣṭhasya sadanaṃ babhūva janasaṃkulam ,
hastyaśvarathasaṃbādhaṃ pārthivācāraśobhanam 8
8. tat vasiṣṭhasya sadanam babhūva janasaṃkulam
hastyaśvarathasaṃbādham pārthivācāraśobhanam
8. tat vasiṣṭhasya sadanam janasaṃkulam

8. The dwelling of Vasiṣṭha became crowded with people, bustling with elephants, horses, and chariots, and adorned by the dignified conduct of kings.
क्षणाद्वसिष्ठो भगवान्विरराम समाधितः ।
आचारेणोपचारेण जग्राह प्रणतं जनम् ॥ ९ ॥
kṣaṇādvasiṣṭho bhagavānvirarāma samādhitaḥ ,
ācāreṇopacāreṇa jagrāha praṇataṃ janam 9
9. kṣaṇāt vasiṣṭhaḥ bhagavān virarāma samādhitaḥ
ācāreṇa upacāreṇa jagrāha praṇatam janam
9. bhagavān vasiṣṭhaḥ kṣaṇāt samādhitaḥ virarāma

9. In a moment, the venerable Vasiṣṭha emerged from his state of meditative absorption (samādhi). He then received the people who had bowed to him, treating them with appropriate conduct and hospitality.
तथानुयातो मुनिभिर्विश्वामित्रान्वितो मुनिः ।
आरुरोह रथं श्रीमान्सहसाब्जमिवाब्जजः ॥ १० ॥
tathānuyāto munibhirviśvāmitrānvito muniḥ ,
āruroha rathaṃ śrīmānsahasābjamivābjajaḥ 10
10. tathā anuyātaḥ munibhiḥ viśvāmitrānvitaḥ muniḥ
āruroha ratham śrīmān sahasā abjam iva abjajaḥ
10. tathā viśvāmitrānvitaḥ munibhiḥ anuyātaḥ śrīmān
muniḥ sahasā ratham āruroha abjam iva abjajaḥ
10. Thus, accompanied by Viśvāmitra and followed by sages, the glorious sage quickly ascended his chariot, just as Brahmā, born from a lotus, ascends a lotus.
ययौ गृहं दाशरथं सैन्येन महता वृतः ।
ब्रह्मेव शक्रनगरं समस्तसुरमालितः ॥ ११ ॥
yayau gṛhaṃ dāśarathaṃ sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ ,
brahmeva śakranagaraṃ samastasuramālitaḥ 11
11. yayau gṛham dāśaratham sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ

11. (saḥ) mahatā sainyena vṛtaḥ dāśaratham gṛham yayau

11. Surrounded by a great army, he went to Daśaratha's abode, just as Brahmā, accompanied by all the gods, goes to Indra's city.
विवेशावनतां तत्र रम्यां दाशरथीं सभाम् ।
हंसयूथानुवलितो राजहंस इवाब्जिनीम् ॥ १२ ॥
viveśāvanatāṃ tatra ramyāṃ dāśarathīṃ sabhām ,
haṃsayūthānuvalito rājahaṃsa ivābjinīm 12
12. viveśa avanatām tatra ramyām dāśarathīm sabhām
haṃsayūthānuvalitaḥ rājahaṃsaḥ iva abjinīm
12. tatra (saḥ) haṃsayūthānuvalitaḥ rājahaṃsaḥ iva abjinīm,
avanatām ramyām dāśarathīm sabhām viveśa
12. There, he entered Daśaratha's beautiful and humble assembly hall, just as a royal swan, accompanied by a flock of swans, enters a lotus pond.
त्रीणि तत्र पदान्याशु तदा दशरथो नृपः ।
निर्जगाम महावीरः सिंहासनसमुत्थितः ॥ १३ ॥
trīṇi tatra padānyāśu tadā daśaratho nṛpaḥ ,
nirjagāma mahāvīraḥ siṃhāsanasamutthitaḥ 13
13. trīṇi tatra padāni āśu tadā daśarathaḥ nṛpaḥ
nirjagāma mahāvīraḥ siṃhāsanasamutthitaḥ
13. tadā tatra mahāvīraḥ nṛpaḥ daśarathaḥ
siṃhāsanasamutthitaḥ āśu trīṇi padāni nirjagāma
13. Then, there, the great hero King Daśaratha, having quickly risen from his throne, stepped forward three paces.
विविशुस्तत्र ते सर्वे नृपा दशरथादयः ।
वसिष्ठाद्याश्च मुनयो ऋषयो ब्राह्मणास्तथा ॥ १४ ॥
viviśustatra te sarve nṛpā daśarathādayaḥ ,
vasiṣṭhādyāśca munayo ṛṣayo brāhmaṇāstathā 14
14. viviśuḥ tatra te sarve nṛpāḥ daśaratha-ādayaḥ |
vasiṣṭha-ādyāḥ ca munayaḥ ṛṣayaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ tathā ||
14. te sarve daśaratha-ādayaḥ nṛpāḥ tatra viviśuḥ ca
vasiṣṭha-ādyāḥ munayaḥ ṛṣayaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ tathā
14. There, all those kings, such as Daśaratha, entered. Similarly, sages such as Vasiṣṭha, as well as seers and brahmins, also entered.
मन्त्रिणश्च सुमन्त्राद्याः सौम्याद्याश्च विपश्चितः ।
राजपुत्राश्च रामाद्या मन्त्रिपुत्राः शुभादयः ॥ १५ ॥
mantriṇaśca sumantrādyāḥ saumyādyāśca vipaścitaḥ ,
rājaputrāśca rāmādyā mantriputrāḥ śubhādayaḥ 15
15. mantriṇaḥ ca sumantra-ādyāḥ saumya-ādyāḥ ca vipaścitaḥ
| rājaputrāḥ ca rāma-ādyāḥ mantriputrāḥ śubha-ādayaḥ ||
15. ca sumantra-ādyāḥ mantriṇaḥ ca saumya-ādyāḥ vipaścitaḥ
ca rāma-ādyāḥ rājaputrāḥ śubha-ādayaḥ mantriputrāḥ
15. Ministers such as Sumantra, and scholars such as Saumya (entered). Similarly, princes such as Rāma, and the sons of ministers such as Śubha (also entered).
अमात्याद्याः प्रकृतयः सुहोत्राद्याश्च नागराः ।
मालवाद्यास्तथा भृत्याः पौराद्याश्चैव मालिनः ॥ १६ ॥
amātyādyāḥ prakṛtayaḥ suhotrādyāśca nāgarāḥ ,
mālavādyāstathā bhṛtyāḥ paurādyāścaiva mālinaḥ 16
16. amātya-ādyāḥ prakṛtayaḥ suhotra-ādyāḥ ca nāgarāḥ |
mālava-ādyāḥ tathā bhṛtyāḥ paura-ādyāḥ ca eva mālinaḥ ||
16. amātya-ādyāḥ prakṛtayaḥ ca suhotra-ādyāḥ nāgarāḥ
tathā mālava-ādyāḥ bhṛtyāḥ ca eva paura-ādyāḥ mālinaḥ
16. Chief ministers such as Amatya, and citizens such as Suhotra (entered). Similarly, servants such as Malava, and garland-makers such as Paura also entered.
अथ तेषूपविष्टेषु स्वेषु स्वेष्वासनेषु च ।
सर्वेष्वेवोपविष्टेषु वसिष्ठोन्मुखदृष्टिषु ॥ १७ ॥
atha teṣūpaviṣṭeṣu sveṣu sveṣvāsaneṣu ca ,
sarveṣvevopaviṣṭeṣu vasiṣṭhonmukhadṛṣṭiṣu 17
17. atha teṣu upaviṣṭeṣu sveṣu sveṣu āsaneṣu ca |
sarveṣu eva upaviṣṭeṣu vasiṣṭha-unmukha-dṛṣṭiṣu ||
17. atha teṣu sarveṣu eva sveṣu sveṣu āsaneṣu
ca upaviṣṭeṣu vasiṣṭha-unmukha-dṛṣṭiṣu
17. Then, when all of them were seated in their respective seats, with their gazes directed towards Vasiṣṭha.
सभाकलकले शान्ते मौनसंस्थेषु बन्दिषु ।
वृत्तासु स्थितिवार्तासु सौम्ये तस्मिन्सभान्तरे ॥ १८ ॥
sabhākalakale śānte maunasaṃstheṣu bandiṣu ,
vṛttāsu sthitivārtāsu saumye tasminsabhāntare 18
18. sabhākalakale śānte maunasaṃstheṣu bandiṣu
vṛttāsu sthitivārtāsu saumye tasmin sabhāantare
18. tasmin saumye sabhāantare sabhākalakale śānte
bandiṣu maunasaṃstheṣu sthitivārtāsu vṛttāsu
18. In that pleasant inner hall of the assembly, when the commotion of the gathering had subsided, the bards had become silent, and the discussions regarding the situation were concluded.
स्फुरत्पवनमालासु विशत्स्वम्भोजकोटरात् ।
परागेषु विलोलेषु मुक्तादामसु चञ्चलम् ॥ १९ ॥
sphuratpavanamālāsu viśatsvambhojakoṭarāt ,
parāgeṣu viloleṣu muktādāmasu cañcalam 19

19. While the wind-blown garlands swayed, and pollen, entering from the lotus hollows, scattered agitatedly, even the strings of pearls gently trembled.
बृहत्कुसुमदोलाभ्यः प्रसृताभ्यः समंततः ।
वाति मांसलमामोदमादाय मधुरानिले ॥ २० ॥
bṛhatkusumadolābhyaḥ prasṛtābhyaḥ samaṃtataḥ ,
vāti māṃsalamāmodamādāya madhurānile 20
20. bṛhatkusumadolābhyaḥ prasṛtābhyaḥ samantataḥ
vāti māṃsalam āmodam ādāya madhurānile
20. madhurānile bṛhatkusumadolābhyaḥ samantataḥ

20. The sweet breeze blows, carrying a rich, intense fragrance, which spreads from the large flower swings in every direction.
वातायनेषु मृदुषु कुसुमाकीर्णभूमिषु ।
पर्यङ्केषूपविष्टासु पश्यन्तीषु पुरंध्रिषु ॥ २१ ॥
vātāyaneṣu mṛduṣu kusumākīrṇabhūmiṣu ,
paryaṅkeṣūpaviṣṭāsu paśyantīṣu puraṃdhriṣu 21
21. vātāyaneṣu mṛduṣu kusumākīrṇabhūmiṣu
paryaṅkeṣu upaviṣṭāsu paśyantīṣu purandhriṣu
21. mṛduṣu vātāyaneṣu kusumākīrṇabhūmiṣu

21. When ladies were seated on couches, on the floors covered with flowers, watching from the gentle windows.
जालागतार्ककरलोलविलोचनासु रत्नप्रभानिकरपिङ्गलकोमलासु ।
संत्यक्तचापललवं चपलासु तासु मौनस्थितासु सितचामरधारिणीषु ॥ २२ ॥
jālāgatārkakaralolavilocanāsu ratnaprabhānikarapiṅgalakomalāsu ,
saṃtyaktacāpalalavaṃ capalāsu tāsu maunasthitāsu sitacāmaradhāriṇīṣu 22

22. Among those female attendants, whose restless eyes shimmer like sunbeams entering through a lattice, whose delicate forms are soft and tinged yellowish-brown by the multitude of gem-lustres, and who, despite their inherent fickleness, have completely abandoned even a trace of capriciousness, stand silently holding white fly-whisks.
मुक्ताफलप्रतिफलप्रतिमार्करश्मिरागोदरास्वजिरभूमिषु पुष्पकौघम् ।
नासादयत्यभिनवातपबिम्बबुद्ध्या भ्रान्ते भ्रमत्यलिकुले नभसीव मेघे ॥ २३ ॥

23. In the courtyards, whose inner spaces are tinged red by sunbeams reflecting off pearls, a confused swarm of bees, mistaking the mass of flowers for a new sun-disc, does not alight upon them; instead, it hovers in delusion, like a cloud in the sky.
पुण्यैर्वसिष्ठवदनप्रसृतं श्रुतं यत्तत्संततिप्रसृतविस्मयमार्यलोके ।
सत्संगमे मृदुपदाक्षरमुग्धवाक्यमन्योन्यमीप्सितमनल्पगुणाभिरामम् ॥ २४ ॥
puṇyairvasiṣṭhavadanaprasṛtaṃ śrutaṃ yattatsaṃtatiprasṛtavismayamāryaloke ,
satsaṃgame mṛdupadākṣaramugdhavākyamanyonyamīpsitamanalpaguṇābhirāmam 24
24. puṇyaiḥ vasiṣṭhavadanaprasṛtaṃ śrutaṃ
yat tat santatiprasṛtavismayam āryaloke
satsaṅgame mṛdupada akṣaramugdhavākyam
anyonyam īpsitam analpaguṇābhirāmam
24. yat śrutaṃ puṇyaiḥ vasiṣṭhavadanaprasṛtaṃ,
tat āryaloke santatiprasṛtavismayam (asti).
satsaṅgame mṛdupada akṣaramugdhavākyam anyonyam īpsitam analpaguṇābhirāmam (ca asti).
24. The sacred knowledge (śruta) that emanated from Vasiṣṭha's mouth, obtained through meritorious actions, generates continuous wonder among noble people (āryaloka). In a gathering of the virtuous (satsaṅga), this charming discourse, characterized by soft words and syllables, is mutually desired and delightful due to its abundant qualities.
दिग्भ्यः पुराच्च गगनाच्च वनाच्च सिद्धविद्याधरार्यमुनिविप्रगणे वसिष्ठम् ।
मौनप्रप्राणमभितः प्रविशत्यशब्दं सोपांशु गौरववता सह जातवाक्ये ॥ २५ ॥
digbhyaḥ purācca gaganācca vanācca siddhavidyādharāryamunivipragaṇe vasiṣṭham ,
maunapraprāṇamabhitaḥ praviśatyaśabdaṃ sopāṃśu gauravavatā saha jātavākye 25
25. digbhyaḥ purāt ca gaganāt ca vanāt ca
siddhavidyādharāryamunivipragaṇe vasiṣṭham
maunapraprāṇam abhitaḥ praviśati
aśabdam sa upāṃśu gauravavatā saha jātavākye
25. digbhyaḥ purāt ca gaganāt ca vanāt ca,
siddhavidyādharāryamunivipragaṇe maunapraprāṇam vasiṣṭham abhitaḥ aśabdam praviśati.
jātavākye gauravavatā saha sa upāṃśu (vākyaṃ bhavati).
25. From all directions, from cities, from the sky, and from forests, a host of Siddhas, Vidyādharas, noble sages, and brahmins approach Vasiṣṭha, who is deeply absorbed in silence. They enter silently, surrounding him. When conversation (vākya) arises with the venerable one (Vasiṣṭha), it happens in whispers.
उन्निद्रकोकनदकोमलकोशकृष्टमग्नालिजालमकरन्दसुवर्णरागैः ।
आपिङ्गले मरुति वाति विलोलघण्टाटांकारगीतविनिपीतनिशान्तगीते ॥ २६ ॥

26. When the yellowish wind blows, tinged with the golden hues of nectar - nectar into which swarms of bees are immersed, nectar that is drawn from the tender calyxes of blooming red lotuses - and in which the song of jingling, swaying bells completely drowns out the songs of dawn.
अगुरुतगरधूमे चन्दनामोदमिश्रे सरसकुसुमदामोद्दामगन्धाङ्किताभ्रे ।
सरति सति वितानाम्भोरुहामोदलेशैश्चलकुसुमरजोङ्के शब्दविज्ञातभृङ्गम् ॥ २७ ॥

27. When [the morning breeze] moves, amidst the smoke of agarwood and Tagara, which is mixed with sandalwood fragrance, and in the atmosphere rich with the abundant fragrance of fresh flower garlands, bearing traces of stirring flower pollen, and carrying wisps of lotus fragrance from the canopy, [making it a scene where] the bee is identified by its sound.
