राजोवाच ।
बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन सोत्सवावर्जिताशयः ।
तदाप्रभृति तत्राहं संपन्नः पुष्टपुल्कसः ॥ १ ॥

1. rājā uvāca: atra bahunā uktena kim? tadāprabhṛti aham

1. The king said: What more is there to say? From that time onwards, with my mind completely devoted to the festivities, I became a well-nourished Pulkasa there.
सप्तरात्रोत्सवस्यान्ते क्रमान्मासाष्टके गते ।
पुष्पिता सास्य संपन्ना स्थिता गर्भवती ततः ॥ २ ॥
saptarātrotsavasyānte kramānmāsāṣṭake gate ,
puṣpitā sāsya saṃpannā sthitā garbhavatī tataḥ 2
2. saptarātrotsavasya ante kramāt māsāṣṭake gate

2. At the end of the seven-night festival, after a period of eight months had passed, she became fertile and then conceived, remaining pregnant.
प्रसूता दुःखदां कन्यां विपद्दुःखक्रियामिव ।
सा कन्या ववृधे शीघ्रं मूर्खचिन्तेव पीवरी ॥ ३ ॥
prasūtā duḥkhadāṃ kanyāṃ vipadduḥkhakriyāmiva ,
sā kanyā vavṛdhe śīghraṃ mūrkhacinteva pīvarī 3
3. prasūtā duḥkhadām kanyām vipadduḥkhakriyām iva

3. She gave birth to a misery-causing daughter, who was like an action that brings calamity and distress. That daughter quickly grew stout, just like a foolish thought (cintā) that expands rapidly.
पुनः प्रसूता सा वर्षैस्त्रिभिः पुत्रमशोभनम् ।
अनर्थमिव दुर्बुद्धिराशापाशविधायकम् ॥ ४ ॥

anarthamiva durbuddhirāśāpāśavidhāyakam 4

4. sā punaḥ tribhiḥ varṣaiḥ aśobhanam anartham

4. After three years, she again gave birth to an inauspicious son, who was like a calamity (anartha) and a foolish mind (durbuddhi) that creates the bonds of desire (āśā-pāśa).
पुनः सुतां दुहितरं पुनरप्यर्भकं ततः ।
कलत्रवानहं जातो वने जरठपुल्कसः ॥ ५ ॥
punaḥ sutāṃ duhitaraṃ punarapyarbhakaṃ tataḥ ,
kalatravānahaṃ jāto vane jaraṭhapulkasaḥ 5
5. punaḥ sutām duhitaram punaḥ api arbhakam tataḥ
kalatravān aham jātaḥ vane jaraṭhapulkasaḥ
5. punaḥ sutām duhitaram punaḥ api arbhakam tataḥ
aham kalatravān jaraṭhapulkasaḥ vane jātaḥ
5. Then again, a daughter, and yet another daughter, and then again a child. Thus, I became a man with a family, an old outcaste (pulkasa) in the forest.
तया सह समास्तत्र मया बह्व्षोऽतिवाहिताः ।
नारके चिन्तया सार्धं ब्रह्मघ्नेनेव यातनाः ॥ ६ ॥
tayā saha samāstatra mayā bahvṣo'tivāhitāḥ ,
nārake cintayā sārdhaṃ brahmaghneneva yātanāḥ 6
6. tayā saha samāḥ tatra mayā bahvyaḥ ativāhitāḥ
nārake cintayā sārdham brahmaghnena iva yātanāḥ
6. mayā tayā saha tatra bahvyaḥ samāḥ ativāhitāḥ,
cintayā sārdham nārake brahmaghnena iva yātanāḥ (iva āsīran)
6. I spent many years there with her, years that were like the tortures (yātanā) experienced in hell by a brahmin-killer, accompanied by worry (cintā).
शीतवातातपक्लेशविवशेन वनान्तरे ।
चिरं विलुलितं वृद्धकच्छपेनेव पल्वले ॥ ७ ॥
śītavātātapakleśavivaśena vanāntare ,
ciraṃ vilulitaṃ vṛddhakacchapeneva palvale 7
7. śītavātātapakleśavivaśena vanāntare ciram

7. For a long time, he was tossed about in the forest interior, helpless due to the suffering (kleśa) caused by cold, wind, and sun, just like an old tortoise (kachchhapa) thrashes around in a small pond (palvala).
कलत्रचिन्ताह्रतया धिया संदह्यमानया ।
दृष्टाः कष्टसमारम्भा दिशः प्रज्वलिता इव ॥ ८ ॥
kalatracintāhratayā dhiyā saṃdahyamānayā ,
dṛṣṭāḥ kaṣṭasamārambhā diśaḥ prajvalitā iva 8
8. kalatracintāhṛtayā dhiyā saṃdahyamānayā
dṛṣṭāḥ kaṣṭasamārambhāḥ diśaḥ prajvalitāḥ iva
8. kalatracintāhṛtayā saṃdahyamānayā dhiyā,
kaṣṭasamārambhāḥ diśaḥ prajvalitāḥ iva dṛṣṭāḥ
8. With his mind (dhī) consumed and afflicted by worry for his wife, the arduous undertakings (kaṣṭasamārambhāḥ) appeared to him like the directions themselves were ablaze.
क्षौमानेकसमाक्षीणपटे चेण्डकधारिणा ।
काष्ठभारो वने व्यूढो यो मूर्तमिव दुष्कृतम् ॥ ९ ॥
kṣaumānekasamākṣīṇapaṭe ceṇḍakadhāriṇā ,
kāṣṭhabhāro vane vyūḍho yo mūrtamiva duṣkṛtam 9
9. kṣaumānekasamākṣīṇapaṭe ceṇḍakadhāriṇā
kāṣṭhabhāraḥ vane vyūḍhaḥ yaḥ mūrtam iva duṣkṛtam
9. kṣaumānekasamākṣīṇapaṭe ceṇḍakadhāriṇā vane yaḥ mūrtam iva duṣkṛtam (asti),
kāṣṭhabhāraḥ vyūḍhaḥ
9. Wearing a loincloth and a silken garment that had been worn out over many years, he carried a load of wood in the forest, which was like sin (duṣkṛtam) personified.
यौकाकीर्णजरत्क्लिन्नगन्धिकौपीनवाससा ।
आश्वस्य धवलीकानां तले नीता घनाः समाः ॥ १० ॥
yaukākīrṇajaratklinnagandhikaupīnavāsasā ,
āśvasya dhavalīkānāṃ tale nītā ghanāḥ samāḥ 10
10. yūkākīrṇajaratklinnagandhikaupīnavāsasā

10. Wearing a loincloth (kaupīnavāsas) that was old, decaying, foul-smelling, and infested with leeches, he spent many long years (samāḥ) taking comfort under the dhāvalīka trees.
कलत्रापूरणोत्केन जर्जरेण हिमानिलैः ।
हेमन्ते दर्दुरेणेव विलीनं वनकुक्षिषु ॥ ११ ॥
kalatrāpūraṇotkena jarjareṇa himānilaiḥ ,
hemante dardureṇeva vilīnaṃ vanakukṣiṣu 11

11. Worn out by the cold winds and anxious to sustain his family, he vanished into the depths of the forest, just like a frog disappears in winter.
नानाकलहकल्लोलतापप्रसरविद्रुताः ।
बाष्पव्याजेन निर्मुक्ता नेत्राभ्यां रक्तबिन्दवः ॥ १२ ॥

bāṣpavyājena nirmuktā netrābhyāṃ raktabindavaḥ 12

12. Drops of blood, dispersed due to the widespread suffering caused by waves of various quarrels, were released from the eyes under the guise of tears.
यामिन्यो विपिने क्लिन्ने वराहामिषभोजनाः ।
शिलातलकुटीकोशे नीता जलदविक्लवाः ॥ १३ ॥
yāminyo vipine klinne varāhāmiṣabhojanāḥ ,
śilātalakuṭīkośe nītā jaladaviklavāḥ 13

13. Nights, damp in the forest and made miserable by the clouds, were passed within shelters resembling rock-slab huts, where boar's flesh was consumed.
काले क्षयं गते रोहे कालाभ्रघनतां गते ।
असौहार्देन बन्धूनां कलहैश्चापि संततैः ॥ १४ ॥
kāle kṣayaṃ gate rohe kālābhraghanatāṃ gate ,
asauhārdena bandhūnāṃ kalahaiścāpi saṃtataiḥ 14
14. kāle kṣayam gate rohe kālābhraghanatām gate
asauhārdena bandhūnām kalahaiḥ ca api santataiḥ
14. kāle kṣayam gate,
rohe kālābhraghanatām gate,
bandhūnām asauhārdena ca api santataiḥ kalahaiḥ
14. This occurred when the favorable time (or period of life) had declined, when the dense vegetation had grown as dark as storm clouds, and also due to the unfriendliness of relatives and incessant quarrels.
सर्वत्र जातशङ्केन कलाभिमुखरार्भकैः ।
मया कृपणचित्तेन नीताः परगृहे समाः ॥ १५ ॥
sarvatra jātaśaṅkena kalābhimukharārbhakaiḥ ,
mayā kṛpaṇacittena nītāḥ paragṛhe samāḥ 15
15. sarvatra jātaśaṅkena kalābhi mukharārbhakaiḥ
mayā kṛpaṇacittena nītāḥ paragṛhe samāḥ

15. With a wretched mind, constantly suspicious, and amidst children noisy with their artistic (kalā) pursuits, I spent years in the homes of others.
चण्डालीकलहोद्विग्नचण्डचण्डालतर्जनैः ।
मुखं जर्जरतां यातमिन्दू राहुरदैरिव ॥ १६ ॥
caṇḍālīkalahodvignacaṇḍacaṇḍālatarjanaiḥ ,
mukhaṃ jarjaratāṃ yātamindū rāhuradairiva 16
16. caṇḍālīkalahodvignacaṇḍacaṇḍālatarjanaiḥ
mukham jarjaratām yātam indū rāhuradair iva
16. caṇḍālīkalahodvignacaṇḍacaṇḍālatarjanaiḥ

16. My face became shattered, like the moon by the teeth of Rāhu, due to the fierce threats of Caṇḍālas who were agitated by the quarrels of Caṇḍālī women.
चर्विताः खर्वितोष्ठेन द्वीपीपिशितपेशयः ।
नारकाहृतविक्रीता नारक्यो रशना इव ॥ १७ ॥
carvitāḥ kharvitoṣṭhena dvīpīpiśitapeśayaḥ ,
nārakāhṛtavikrītā nārakyo raśanā iva 17
17. carvitāḥ kharvitoṣṭhena dvīpīpiśitapeśayaḥ

17. Slices of leopard meat were chewed by my shrunken lips, like hellish ropes (raśanā) that had been seized and sold by infernal beings.
हिमवत्कन्दरोद्गीर्णाश्चण्डा हेमन्तवीचयः ।
शिशिरे शीकरासारतुषारनिचयाश्चिरम् ॥ १८ ॥

śiśire śīkarāsāratuṣāranicayāściram 18

18. Fierce winter blasts (vīci), spewed forth from the Himalayan caves, and long accumulations of spray-showers and frost, prevailed for an extended period in the cool season (śiśira).
अङ्गे निरम्बरे सोढा मृत्युमुक्ता इवेषवः ।
जराजरठमूढेन मूलानि क्षीणभूरुहाम् ॥ १९ ॥
aṅge nirambare soḍhā mṛtyumuktā iveṣavaḥ ,
jarājaraṭhamūḍhena mūlāni kṣīṇabhūruhām 19
19. aṅge nirambare soḍhā mṛtyumuktā iva iṣavaḥ
jarājaraṭhamūḍhena mūlāni kṣīṇabhūruhām

19. On the bare body, suffering, like arrows released by death, was endured. By one bewildered and decaying due to old age, the roots of withered trees (were dug up)...
सुकृतानामिवैकेन समुत्खातानि भूरिशः ।
शरावकेष्वटव्यां च पललं पक्वमादरात् ॥ २० ॥
sukṛtānāmivaikena samutkhātāni bhūriśaḥ ,
śarāvakeṣvaṭavyāṃ ca palalaṃ pakvamādarāt 20
20. sukṛtānām iva ekena samutkhātāni bhūriśaḥ
śarāvakeṣu aṭavyām ca palalaṃ pakvaṃ ādarāt
20. ekena iva sukṛtānām bhūriśaḥ samutkhātāni.
ca śarāvakeṣu aṭavyām ādarāt pakvaṃ palalam
20. ...were uprooted abundantly, as if by a single good deed (out of many). And respectfully cooked meat was [placed] in bowls and in the forest.
अस्पृष्टेन जनैर्भुक्तं कुकलत्रवता मया ।
गृहीततेजःक्षतये बहुवक्रविकारिणा ॥ २१ ॥
aspṛṣṭena janairbhuktaṃ kukalatravatā mayā ,
gṛhītatejaḥkṣataye bahuvakravikāriṇā 21
21. aspṛṣṭena janaiḥ bhuktaṃ kukalatravatā
mayā gṛhītatejaḥkṣataye bahuvakravikāriṇā
21. janaiḥ aspṛṣṭena kukalatravatā bahuvakravikāriṇā

21. The cooked meat was eaten by me – by me, who was untouched by people, who had a bad wife, and who suffered many facial deformities – for the destruction of my acquired vitality.
मार्गाविकमिवात्मीयं विक्रीतं पण्यमन्यतः ।
प्राण्यङ्गवपुषस्तस्य प्रोत्कृत्त्योत्कृत्त्य पेशलः ॥ २२ ॥
mārgāvikamivātmīyaṃ vikrītaṃ paṇyamanyataḥ ,
prāṇyaṅgavapuṣastasya protkṛttyotkṛttya peśalaḥ 22
22. mārgāvikam iva ātmīyaṃ vikrītaṃ paṇyam anyataḥ
prāṇyaṅgavapuṣaḥ tasya prokṛtya utkṛtya peśalaḥ
22. ātmīyaṃ paṇyam mārgāvikam iva anyataḥ vikrītaṃ.
tasya prāṇyaṅgavapuṣaḥ prokṛtya utkṛtya peśalaḥ
22. One's own essence, like a wild sheep, was sold off as merchandise elsewhere. From that body of a living being, a skillful [agent, such as Time or decay] repeatedly cut off pieces.
आयसंपरि विक्रीता विन्ध्यपक्कणभूमिषु ।
जन्मान्तरसहस्रोत्थं स्वपापमिव वृद्धये ॥ २३ ॥
āyasaṃpari vikrītā vindhyapakkaṇabhūmiṣu ,
janmāntarasahasrotthaṃ svapāpamiva vṛddhaye 23
23. āyasam pari vikrītā vindhya-pakkaṇa-bhūmiṣu
janmāntara-sahasrottham sva-pāpam iva vṛddhaye
23. vindhya-pakkaṇa-bhūmiṣu āyasam pari vikrītā
janmāntara-sahasrottham sva-pāpam iva vṛddhaye
23. Cruelly sold off in the lands of the Vindhya outcastes, (it was) as if one's own sin (pāpa), accumulated over thousands of past lives, was meant for its (further) increase.
अविकीर्णमसत्कीर्णं चण्डालारामभूमिषु ।
दृष्टः कुद्दालको दृष्ट्या संध्यास्नेहविमुक्तया ॥ २४ ॥
avikīrṇamasatkīrṇaṃ caṇḍālārāmabhūmiṣu ,
dṛṣṭaḥ kuddālako dṛṣṭyā saṃdhyāsnehavimuktayā 24
24. avikīrṇam asatkīrṇam caṇḍāla-ārāma-bhūmiṣu
dṛṣṭaḥ kuddālakaḥ dṛṣṭyā sandhyā-sneha-vimuktayā
24. caṇḍāla-ārāma-bhūmiṣu avikīrṇam asatkīrṇam
kuddālakaḥ sandhyā-sneha-vimuktayā dṛṣṭyā dṛṣṭaḥ
24. In the desolate and neglected lands of the Caṇḍāla (outcaste) gardens, the digger was seen with a gaze devoid of the tenderness of twilight.
रौरवापतितेनेव तत्कालस्निग्धतां गतः ।
विन्ध्यकन्दरगुल्मानां बन्धुत्वमिव गच्छता ॥ २५ ॥
rauravāpatiteneva tatkālasnigdhatāṃ gataḥ ,
vindhyakandaragulmānāṃ bandhutvamiva gacchatā 25
25. raurava-āpatitena iva tat-kāla-snigdhatām gataḥ
vindhya-kandara-gulmānām bandhutvam iva gacchata
25. raurava-āpatitena iva gacchata (saḥ) vindhya-kandara-gulmānām
bandhutvam iva tat-kāla-snigdhatām gataḥ
25. Appearing as if he had fallen into the Raurava (hell), he had acquired a fleeting freshness at that moment, as if he were entering into kinship with the shrubs of the Vindhya caves.
पुलिन्दवपुषा यत्र युक्तयोगैः समर्पिताः ।
तर्पिता लगुडाघातजितकौलेयरंहसा ॥ २६ ॥
pulindavapuṣā yatra yuktayogaiḥ samarpitāḥ ,
tarpitā laguḍāghātajitakauleyaraṃhasā 26
26. pulinda-vapuṣā yatra yukta-yogaiḥ samarpitāḥ
tarpitāḥ laguḍa-āghāta-jita-kauleya-raṃhasā
26. yatra yukta-yogaiḥ samarpitāḥ (āsan) (te)
laguḍa-āghāta-jita-kauleya-raṃhasā pulinda-vapuṣā tarpitāḥ (āsan)
26. Where offerings were presented by those engaged in disciplined (yoga) practices, and (the beings) were then satisfied by the Pulinda-bodied one who, with a blow of a stick, had subdued the speed of dogs.
पुत्रदाराः कदन्नेन ग्रामकान्धोचितेन च ।
धारासाररणत्पत्रशुष्कतालतले निशाः ॥ २७ ॥
putradārāḥ kadannena grāmakāndhocitena ca ,
dhārāsāraraṇatpatraśuṣkatālatale niśāḥ 27

27. My sons and wives subsisted on meager food, fit for a blind villager. The nights passed under a dry palm tree, its leaves rattling from the heavy rain.
नीता रणितदन्तेन सार्धं विपिनवानरैः ।
रोमभिः कोटिमुद्रोद्यैः शीतेनाध्युषितस्य मे ॥ २८ ॥
nītā raṇitadantena sārdhaṃ vipinavānaraiḥ ,
romabhiḥ koṭimudrodyaiḥ śītenādhyuṣitasya me 28
28. nītā raṇitadantena sārdhaṃ vipinavānaraiḥ
romabhiḥ koṭimudrodyaiḥ śītena adhyuṣitasya me
28. (niśāḥ) śītena adhyuṣitasya me raṇitadantena koṭimudrodyaiḥ
romabhiḥ (sahitaḥ) vipinavānaraiḥ sārdhaṃ nītā (āsan)
28. Overcome by cold, with chattering teeth and hairs standing erect like countless bristles, I spent those nights together with forest monkeys.
वर्षासु मुक्ताकणवद्धृता वानलविन्दवः ।
अजाजीमूतखण्डार्थं क्षुत्क्षुण्णक्षीणकुक्षिणा ॥ २९ ॥
varṣāsu muktākaṇavaddhṛtā vānalavindavaḥ ,
ajājīmūtakhaṇḍārthaṃ kṣutkṣuṇṇakṣīṇakukṣiṇā 29
29. varṣāsu muktākaṇavat dhṛtā vānalavindavaḥ
ajājīmūtakhaṇḍārthaṃ kṣutkṣuṇṇakṣīṇakukṣiṇā

29. In the rainy seasons, raindrops clung to my body like pearls. With a belly emaciated and crushed by hunger, (I quarreled) for even a tiny piece of cumin,
कलत्रेण सहाटव्यां कृतः कलह आकुलः ।
वने रणितदन्तेन शीतकेकरचक्षुषा ॥ ३० ॥
kalatreṇa sahāṭavyāṃ kṛtaḥ kalaha ākulaḥ ,
vane raṇitadantena śītakekaracakṣuṣā 30
30. kalatreṇa saha āṭavyāṃ kṛtaḥ kalahaḥ ākulaḥ

30. kalatreṇa saha āṭavyāṃ vane raṇitadantena
śītakekaracakṣuṣā (mayā) ākulaḥ kalahaḥ kṛtaḥ
30. I quarreled bitterly with my wife in the forest, with chattering teeth and eyes narrowed from the cold.
मषीमलिनगात्रेण वेतालस्वजनायितम् ।
सरित्तीरेषु मत्स्यार्थं भ्रान्तं बडिशधारिणा ॥ ३१ ॥

31. With his body stained black like ink, he, behaving like a kinsman to goblins (vetāla), roamed the riverbanks, carrying a fishhook, in search of fish.
कल्पे जगत्सुनाशार्थं कृतान्तेनेव पाशिना ।
पीतं बहूपवासेन सद्यःकृत्तमृगोरसः ॥ ३२ ॥
kalpe jagatsunāśārthaṃ kṛtānteneva pāśinā ,
pītaṃ bahūpavāsena sadyaḥkṛttamṛgorasaḥ 32

32. The fresh-cut blood from the deer's chest was drunk by him (the hunter), who had endured much fasting, just as Kritānta (Yama), holding his noose, would consume for the complete destruction of the world at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa).
तत्कालकोष्णं रुधिरं मातुः स्तनपयो यथा ।
श्मशानसंस्थितान्मत्तो रक्तरक्तान्मलाशिनः ॥ ३३ ॥
tatkālakoṣṇaṃ rudhiraṃ mātuḥ stanapayo yathā ,
śmaśānasaṃsthitānmatto raktaraktānmalāśinaḥ 33
33. tatkālakaoṣṇaṃ rudhiraṃ mātuḥ stanapayaḥ yathā

(saḥ) śmaśānasaṃsthitaḥ mattaḥ raktaraktaḥ malāśī (ca āsīt)
33. That blood, warm at the time, was like a mother's breast-milk. (He, the hunter, appeared) as one situated in the cremation ground, intoxicated, blood-red, and an eater of impurities.
विद्रुता वनवेतालाश्चण्डिकाभिद्रुता इव ।
वागुरा विपिने व्युप्ता बन्धार्थं मृगपक्षिणाम् ॥ ३४ ॥

vāgurā vipine vyuptā bandhārthaṃ mṛgapakṣiṇām 34

34. The forest goblins (vetāla) fled as if pursued by Caṇḍikā. Snares were then laid in the wilderness for the capture of deer and birds.
आशा इव विवृद्ध्यर्थं पुत्रदारकलत्रजाः ।
मया मायामयैर्लोकाः सूत्रजालमयैः खगाः ॥ ३५ ॥
āśā iva vivṛddhyarthaṃ putradārakalatrajāḥ ,
mayā māyāmayairlokāḥ sūtrajālamayaiḥ khagāḥ 35
35. āśāḥ iva vivṛddhi-artham putra-dāra-kalatra-jāḥ
mayā māyā-mayaiḥ lokāḥ sūtra-jāla-mayaiḥ khagāḥ
35. putra-dāra-kalatra-jāḥ vivṛddhi-artham āśāḥ iva mayā (utpādyante).
mayā māyā-mayaiḥ (upāyaiḥ) lokāḥ,
sūtra-jāla-mayaiḥ (upāyaiḥ) khagāḥ (ca utpādyante).
35. Hopes, like those arising from sons, wives, and family for the sake of prosperity, are generated by me. Similarly, through illusory means (māyā), I create worlds, and through means like nets of threads, I create birds.
जालैर्जर्जरता नीता दिशश्चासुकृतायुषा ।
तत्रापि दत्तः प्रसरो मनसो दुष्कृतोदये ॥ ३६ ॥
jālairjarjaratā nītā diśaścāsukṛtāyuṣā ,
tatrāpi dattaḥ prasaro manaso duṣkṛtodaye 36
36. jālaiḥ jarjaratā nītā diśaḥ ca asukṛta-āyuṣā
tatra api dattaḥ prasaraḥ manasaḥ duṣkṛta-udaye
36. asukṛta-āyuṣā (mayā) jālaiḥ jarjaratā nītā,
ca diśaḥ (api nītāḥ).
tatra api duṣkṛta-udaye manasaḥ prasaraḥ dattaḥ.
36. By nets (of attachments), decrepitude was brought upon me, and the directions (of my life) were also led to ruin by a life of unvirtuous actions (karma). Furthermore, even then, upon the emergence of evil actions (karma), scope was given to the mind.
आशा प्रसारिता दूरं प्रावृषीव तरङ्गिणी ।
करभ्या इव सर्पेण विद्रुतं दूरतो धिया ॥ ३७ ॥
āśā prasāritā dūraṃ prāvṛṣīva taraṅgiṇī ,
karabhyā iva sarpeṇa vidrutaṃ dūrato dhiyā 37
37. āśā prasāritā dūram prāvṛṣi iva taraṅgiṇī
karabhyā iva sarpeṇa vidrutam dūrataḥ dhiyā
37. āśā prāvṛṣi taraṅgiṇī iva dūram prasāritā.

37. Desire was spread far and wide, like a river in the rainy season. The intellect (dhiyā) fled far away, as if a she-camel were to flee from a snake.
दूरे त्यक्ता दया देहे भुजङ्गेनेव कंचुकम् ।
क्रौर्यं सुखेन संरम्भशरवर्षिं निनादि च ॥ ३८ ॥
dūre tyaktā dayā dehe bhujaṅgeneva kaṃcukam ,
krauryaṃ sukhena saṃrambhaśaravarṣiṃ ninādi ca 38
38. dūre tyaktā dayā dehe bhujaṅgena iva kañcukam
krauryam sukhena saṃrambha-śara-varṣi ninādi ca
38. dayā dehe dūre bhujaṅgena kañcukam iva tyaktā.

38. Compassion was cast far away from the body, just as a snake (bhujaṅga) sheds its slough. And cruelty (kraurya) manifested easily, raining down arrows of rage and roaring.
अङ्गीकृतं निदाघान्ते नभसेवासिताम्बुदः ।
विकासिन्यो क्षताः क्षारा दूरं परिहृता जनैः ॥ ३९ ॥
aṅgīkṛtaṃ nidāghānte nabhasevāsitāmbudaḥ ,
vikāsinyo kṣatāḥ kṣārā dūraṃ parihṛtā janaiḥ 39

vikāsinyaḥ kṣatāḥ kṣārā dūram parihṛtā janaiḥ

39. Just as dark clouds are welcomed by the sky at the end of summer, so too, the expanding, damaged, corrosive impurities were removed far away by people.
श्वभ्रेणेव कुमञ्जर्यश्चिरमूढा मयापदः ।
स्वकालकुलकोणासु नरकोद्दामभूमिषु ॥ ४० ॥
śvabhreṇeva kumañjaryaściramūḍhā mayāpadaḥ ,
svakālakulakoṇāsu narakoddāmabhūmiṣu 40
40. śvabhreṇa iva kumañjaryaḥ cira-mūḍhā mayā āpadaḥ
sva-kāla-kula-koṇāsu naraka-uddāma-bhūmiṣu
40. mayā cira-mūḍhāḥ āpadaḥ,
śvabhreṇa iva kumañjaryaḥ,
naraka-uddāma-bhūmiṣu sva-kāla-kula-koṇāsu (āsan)
40. Like wicked sprouts sustained by a pit, long-borne misfortunes (āpadaḥ) were carried by me in dreadful, hellish regions and within the hidden corners of my own family's domain.
उप्ता दुष्कृतबीजानां मुष्टयो मोहवृष्टयः ।
वागुराभिर्मया विन्ध्यकन्दरस्थेन निर्दयम् ॥ ४१ ॥
uptā duṣkṛtabījānāṃ muṣṭayo mohavṛṣṭayaḥ ,
vāgurābhirmayā vindhyakandarasthena nirdayam 41
41. uptā duṣkṛta-bījānām muṣṭayaḥ moha-vṛṣṭayaḥ
vāgurābhiḥ mayā vindhya-kandara-sthena nirdayam
41. vindhya-kandara-sthena mayā nirdayam vāgurābhiḥ
duṣkṛta-bījānām muṣṭayaḥ moha-vṛṣṭayaḥ uptā (āsan)
41. By me, dwelling in the caves of the Vindhya, mercilessly, handfuls of evil (duṣkṛta) seeds were sown, [and] showers of delusion (moha) [were spread], using nets (vāgurā).
भूतेष्विव कृतान्तेन मृगेषु परिवल्गितम् ।
चामरीकण्ठकुड्येषु विश्रान्तशिरसा मया ॥ ४२ ॥
bhūteṣviva kṛtāntena mṛgeṣu parivalgitam ,
cāmarīkaṇṭhakuḍyeṣu viśrāntaśirasā mayā 42

42. Like fate (kṛtānta) among all living beings (bhūta), I roamed among the deer. [This was done] by me, with my head resting upon the wall-like necks of yak-cows.
सुप्तमस्तविवेकेन शेषाङ्गेष्विव शौरिणा ।
विलोलचरणाम्बरया सरावोल्लासिधूम्रया ॥ ४३ ॥
suptamastavivekena śeṣāṅgeṣviva śauriṇā ,
vilolacaraṇāmbarayā sarāvollāsidhūmrayā 43

43. Asleep, with consciousness (viveka) obscured, as if by Śauri (Viṣṇu) upon the limbs of Śeṣa; (and characterized) by (a body) with trembling feet and garment, (and) smoky, rising with joyful sound.
मम तन्वा सनीहारविन्ध्यकच्छगुहायितम् ।
कृष्णदेहेन यौकाढ्याकन्थास्कन्धे मया चिरम् ॥ ४४ ॥
mama tanvā sanīhāravindhyakacchaguhāyitam ,
kṛṣṇadehena yaukāḍhyākanthāskandhe mayā ciram 44

44. By my body (tanu) was (something) made to resemble a misty cave in the Vindhya foothills. By the body of Kṛṣṇa, (resting) on the shoulder of a rag-clad person teeming with lice, (it was experienced) by me for a long time.
ग्रीष्मे सोढा चलद्भूता वराहेण यथोर्वरा ।
बहुशोऽहं वनोत्थाग्निनिर्दग्धप्राणिमण्डलः ॥ ४५ ॥
grīṣme soḍhā caladbhūtā varāheṇa yathorvarā ,
bahuśo'haṃ vanotthāgninirdagdhaprāṇimaṇḍalaḥ 45
45. grīṣme soḍhā caladbhūtā varāheṇa yathā urvarā
bahuśaḥ aham vanotthāgninirdagdhaprāṇimaṇḍalaḥ
45. grīṣme aham vanotthāgninirdagdhaprāṇimaṇḍalaḥ
bahuśaḥ yathā varāheṇa caladbhūtā urvarā soḍhā
45. In summer, I, whose multitude of creatures was burnt by forest fires, (endured) many times, just as the earth (urvarā), teeming with moving beings, was borne by Varāha (Viṣṇu's boar incarnation).
कल्पाग्निभुक्तजगतः कालस्यानुगतिं गतः ।
लोभिलिङ्गो यथा रोगमनर्थानिव दुर्ग्रहः ।
प्रसूतास्तत्र मे दारा दुःखान्यथ सुखान्यपि ॥ ४६ ॥
kalpāgnibhuktajagataḥ kālasyānugatiṃ gataḥ ,
lobhiliṅgo yathā rogamanarthāniva durgrahaḥ ,
prasūtāstatra me dārā duḥkhānyatha sukhānyapi 46
46. kalpāgnibhuktajagataḥ kālasya anugatim
gataḥ lobhiliṅgaḥ yathā rogam
anarthān iva durgrahaḥ prasūtāḥ tatra
me dārāḥ duḥkhāni atha sukhāni api
46. aham kalpāgnibhuktajagataḥ kālasya anugatim
gataḥ aham lobhiliṅgaḥ (bhūt) yathā
durgrahaḥ rogam anarthān iva (dadāti) tatra
me dārāḥ duḥkhāni atha sukhāni api prasūtāḥ
46. I followed the course of time (kāla), which had consumed the world with the fire of dissolution (kalpāgni). I was marked by greed (lobhiliṅga), just as an evil planet (durgraha) brings about disease and misfortunes. There, my wives (dārā) gave birth to both sorrows and joys.
नृपालपुत्रकेनैकतनयेन तदा मया ।
नीता नीरन्ध्रदोषेण षष्टिः कल्पसमाः समाः ॥ ४७ ॥
nṛpālaputrakenaikatanayena tadā mayā ,
nītā nīrandhradoṣeṇa ṣaṣṭiḥ kalpasamāḥ samāḥ 47
47. nṛpālaputrakeṇa ekatanayena tadā mayā nītā
nīrandhradoṣeṇa ṣaṣṭiḥ kalpasamāḥ samāḥ
47. tadā mayā nṛpālaputrakeṇa ekatanayena
nīrandhradoṣeṇa ṣaṣṭiḥ kalpasamāḥ samāḥ nītā
47. At that time, I, the only son of a king, spent sixty years - each year feeling like an eon - due to my continuous vices.
आक्रुष्टमुद्धुरतरं रुदितं विपत्सु भुक्तं कदन्नमुषितं हतपक्कणेषु ।
कालान्तरं बहु मयोपहतेन तत्र दुर्वासनानिगडबन्धगतेन सभ्याः ॥ ४८ ॥
ākruṣṭamuddhurataraṃ ruditaṃ vipatsu bhuktaṃ kadannamuṣitaṃ hatapakkaṇeṣu ,
kālāntaraṃ bahu mayopahatena tatra durvāsanānigaḍabandhagatena sabhyāḥ 48
48. ākruṣṭam uddhūrataram ruditam vipatsu
bhuktam kadannam uṣitam hatapakkaṇeṣu
kālāntaram bahu mayā upahatena tatra
durvāsanānigaḍabandhagatenā sabhyāḥ
48. sabhyāḥ tatra mayā upahatena
durvāsanānigaḍabandhagatenā bahu kālāntaram
ākruṣṭam uddhūrataram ruditam vipatsu
kadannam bhuktam hatapakkaṇeṣu uṣitam
48. O respected assembly members, during that long time, I, afflicted and bound by the shackles of evil tendencies (durvāsana), endured much exceedingly harsh lamentation and crying in calamities. I ate wretched food and lived in ruined hamlets.
