ब्रह्मन्कोऽस्य सुहृद्ब्रूहि येनासौ रमते सह ।
रमणं किंस्वभावं स्यादुत रत्यात्म वास्य तत् ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Rāma said: 'O Brahman, please tell me, who is his friend, with whom he delights? What is the nature of this delight (ramaṇa)? Is it characterized by sensual pleasure (rati), or is it his very self (ātman)?'
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
स्वप्रवाहेहितं नाम स्वप्रायेहितनाम च ।
स्वकर्म नाम चास्यास्ते मित्रमेकमकृत्रिमम् ॥ २ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
svapravāhehitaṃ nāma svaprāyehitanāma ca ,
svakarma nāma cāsyāste mitramekamakṛtrimam 2
2. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca svapravāhehitam nāma svaprāyehitam
nāma ca svakarma nāma ca asyāḥ te mitram ekam akṛtrimam
2. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca.
asyāḥ te ekam akṛtrimam mitram svapravāhehitam nāma ca svaprāyehitam nāma ca svakarma nāma (asti).
2. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: That which is desired by one's natural inclination, that which is desired for one's highest good, and indeed, one's own action (karma) – these are the names of this one true, unartificial friend for you.
पितृवद्विहिताश्वासं दारा इव नियन्त्रणम् ।
संकटेषु दुरन्तेषु नित्यमव्यभिचारि च ॥ ३ ॥
pitṛvadvihitāśvāsaṃ dārā iva niyantraṇam ,
saṃkaṭeṣu duranteṣu nityamavyabhicāri ca 3
3. pitṛvat vihitāśvāsam dārāḥ iva niyantraṇam
saṃkaṭeṣu duranteṣu nityam avyabhicāri ca
3. (ekam akṛtrimam mitram) pitṛvat vihitāśvāsam,
dārāḥ iva niyantraṇam,
ca duranteṣu saṃkaṭeṣu nityam avyabhicāri (asti).
3. Like a father, it provides comfort; like a wife, it imposes restraint; and in dire difficulties, it is always unfailing.
अशङ्कितोपचरणं सुसंपादितनिर्वृति ।
कोपेष्वकोपनतया वितीर्णावर्जनामृतम् ॥ ४ ॥
aśaṅkitopacaraṇaṃ susaṃpāditanirvṛti ,
kopeṣvakopanatayā vitīrṇāvarjanāmṛtam 4
4. aśaṅkitopacaraṇam susaṃpāditaniṛvṛti
kopeṣu akopanatayā vitīrṇāvarjanāmṛtam
4. (ekam akṛtrimam mitram) aśaṅkitopacaraṇam (asti),
susaṃpāditaniṛvṛti (asti),
ca kopeṣu akopanatayā vitīrṇāvarjanāmṛtam (asti).
4. It provides service without apprehension, yields well-accomplished peace (nirvṛti), and in times of anger, with its non-anger, it bestows the nectar of conciliation.
दुर्गदुर्गमदुर्वारदोषोद्धरणतत्परम् ।
सर्वविश्वासरत्नानां कोश आशैशवोषितम् ॥ ५ ॥
durgadurgamadurvāradoṣoddharaṇatatparam ,
sarvaviśvāsaratnānāṃ kośa āśaiśavoṣitam 5
5. durga-durgama-durvāra-doṣoddharaṇa-tatparam
sarvaviśvāsaratnānām kośaḥ āśaiśavoṣitam
5. (ekam akṛtrimam mitram) durga-durgama-durvāra-doṣoddharaṇa-tatparam (asti),
(ca) sarvaviśvāsaratnānām kośaḥ (asti),
āśaiśavoṣitam (ca asti).
5. It is devoted to eradicating faults that are difficult, inaccessible, and hard to overcome; it is a treasury of all jewels of trust, having resided [within one] since childhood.
सहपांसुकृताक्रीडमाबाल्यादेव संगतम् ।
विनिवारितदुश्चेष्टं पितृवद्रक्षणोन्मुखम् ॥ ६ ॥
sahapāṃsukṛtākrīḍamābālyādeva saṃgatam ,
vinivāritaduśceṣṭaṃ pitṛvadrakṣaṇonmukham 6
6. sahapāṃsukṛtākrīḍam ābālyāt eva saṅgatam
vinivāritaduśceṣṭam pitṛvat rakṣaṇonmukham
6. sahapāṃsukṛtākrīḍam ābālyāt eva saṅgatam
vinivāritaduśceṣṭam pitṛvat rakṣaṇonmukham
6. One who played together with me in the dust, associated with me since childhood, who prevented me from performing wrong actions, and who was intent on protecting me like a father.
वह्नेरिवौष्ण्यं सौगन्ध्यं कुसुमस्येव सर्वदा ।
अविनाभावि विमलं रवेरिव च वासरम् ॥ ७ ॥
vahnerivauṣṇyaṃ saugandhyaṃ kusumasyeva sarvadā ,
avinābhāvi vimalaṃ raveriva ca vāsaram 7
7. vahneḥ iva uṣṇyam saugandhyam kusumasya iva
sarvadā avinābhāvi vimalam raveḥ iva ca vāsaram
7. vahneḥ iva uṣṇyam saugandhyam kusumasya iva
sarvadā avinābhāvi vimalam raveḥ iva ca vāsaram
7. [The qualities described are] like the heat from fire, always like the fragrance from a flower; inseparable, pure, and like the day from the sun.
लालनैकरतं नित्ये पालनैकपरायणम् ।
सर्वसंकटसंघट्टरक्षणैकसमुद्यतम् ॥ ८ ॥
lālanaikarataṃ nitye pālanaikaparāyaṇam ,
sarvasaṃkaṭasaṃghaṭṭarakṣaṇaikasamudyatam 8
8. lālanāikaratam nitye pālanaikaparāyaṇam
sarvasaṅkaṭasaṅghaṭṭarakṣaṇaikasamudyatam
8. lālanāikaratam nitye pālanaikaparāyaṇam

8. Always solely devoted to cherishing, exclusively dedicated to nurturing, and single-mindedly prepared for protection from all dangerous encounters.
हेम्नोऽग्निरिव देहस्य सर्वावस्थस्य शुद्धिदम् ।
इदं हेयमुपादेयमिति दर्शनतत्परम् ॥ ९ ॥
hemno'gniriva dehasya sarvāvasthasya śuddhidam ,
idaṃ heyamupādeyamiti darśanatatparam 9
9. hemnaḥ agniḥ iva dehasya sarvāvasthasya
śuddhidam idam heyam upādeyam iti darśanatatparam
9. hemnaḥ agniḥ iva dehasya sarvāvasthasya
śuddhidam idam heyam upādeyam iti darśanatatparam
9. [This person is] like fire to gold, providing purification to the body in all its conditions, and dedicated to discerning, "this is to be rejected, and this is to be accepted."
आह्लादकमनिन्द्याभिः कथाभिरिव नागरम् ।
सच्चेष्टामणिमाणिक्यभाण्डसंभारमन्दिरम् ॥ १० ॥
āhlādakamanindyābhiḥ kathābhiriva nāgaram ,
sacceṣṭāmaṇimāṇikyabhāṇḍasaṃbhāramandiram 10
10. āhlādakam anindyābhiḥ kathābhiḥ iva nāgaram
satceṣṭāmaṇimāṇikyabhāṇḍasaṃbhāramandiram
10. āhlādakam nāgaram iva anindyābhiḥ kathābhiḥ (saḥ
asti) satceṣṭāmaṇimāṇikyabhāṇḍasaṃbhāramandiram
10. He is delightful, like a cultured person with irreproachable stories. He is a storehouse containing an abundance of good deeds, jewels, and rubies.
सूर्यस्तम इवाजस्रमप्रदर्शयदप्रियम् ।
अनुरक्ता महेलेव प्रियमेवाप्रदर्शयत् ॥ ११ ॥
sūryastama ivājasramapradarśayadapriyam ,
anuraktā maheleva priyamevāpradarśayat 11
11. sūryaḥ tamaḥ iva ajasram apriyam apradarśayat
anuraktā mahelā iva priyam eva apradarśayat
11. sūryaḥ tamaḥ iva (saḥ) ajasram apriyam apradarśayat.
anuraktā mahelā iva (saḥ) priyam eva apradarśayat.
11. Just as the sun (dispels) darkness, he constantly avoided showing anything unpleasant. And like a loving wife, he consistently showed only what was pleasant.
जनं प्रियंवदं कुर्वत्प्रियमेव समाचरत् ।
पेशलं मधुरं स्निग्धमक्षुब्धमुदिताशयम् ॥ १२ ॥
janaṃ priyaṃvadaṃ kurvatpriyameva samācarat ,
peśalaṃ madhuraṃ snigdhamakṣubdhamuditāśayam 12
12. janam priyamvadam kurvat priyam eva samācarat
peśalam madhuram snigdham akṣubdham uditāśayam
12. (saḥ) janam priyamvadam kurvat priyam eva samācarat.
(saḥ eva ca) peśalam madhuram snigdham akṣubdham uditāśayam (āsīt).
12. He made people speak kindly and behaved only pleasantly. He was charming, sweet, kind, unperturbed, and possessed a noble disposition.
लोकोपचारकं पूज्यं स्मितपूर्वाभिभाषणम् ।
कामोपशान्तं सद्रूपं परमार्थैककारणम् ॥ १३ ॥
lokopacārakaṃ pūjyaṃ smitapūrvābhibhāṣaṇam ,
kāmopaśāntaṃ sadrūpaṃ paramārthaikakāraṇam 13
13. lokopacārakam pūjyam smitapūrvābhibhāṣaṇam
kāmopaśāntam sadrūpam paramārthaikakāraṇam
13. (saḥ) lokopacārakam,
pūjyam,
smitapūrvābhibhāṣaṇam,
kāmopaśāntam,
sadrūpam,
paramārthaikakāraṇam (āsīt).
13. He was a benefactor of the people, worthy of reverence, and his speech was always preceded by a smile. He was serene regarding desires, of noble character, and the unique cause for achieving the ultimate reality (paramārtha).
रणेऽज्ञानसमुद्भूते पूर्वं प्रहरणोद्यतम् ।
अपूर्वनर्मनिर्माणलीलाललनलालकम् ॥ १४ ॥
raṇe'jñānasamudbhūte pūrvaṃ praharaṇodyatam ,
apūrvanarmanirmāṇalīlālalanalālakam 14
14. raṇe ajñānasamudbhūte pūrvam praharaṇodyatam
apūrvanarmanirmāṇalīlālanalālakaṃ
14. pūrvam ajñānasamudbhūte raṇe praharaṇodyatam
apūrvanarmanirmāṇalīlālanalālakaṃ
14. Who, in the battle born of ignorance, was formerly ready to strike, and who delights in the playful creation of novel amusement.
पालकं शीलसाराणां दाराणां च कुलस्य च ।
आधिव्याधिपरीतस्य चेतसोऽमृतमौषधम् ॥ १५ ॥
pālakaṃ śīlasārāṇāṃ dārāṇāṃ ca kulasya ca ,
ādhivyādhiparītasya cetaso'mṛtamauṣadham 15
15. pālakaṃ śīlasārāṇām ca dārāṇām ca kulasya
ādhivyādhiparītasya cetasaḥ amṛtam auṣadham
15. śīlasārāṇām ca dārāṇām ca kulasya pālakaṃ
ādhivyādhiparītasya cetasaḥ amṛtam auṣadham
15. He is the protector of those whose essence is good conduct, of their wives, and of their families; he is the nectar and medicine for a mind afflicted by mental and physical suffering.
विशेषविद्यावैदग्ध्यवादवन्द्यविनोदनम् ।
समानकुलशीलत्वाद्द्विधाभाव इव स्थितम् ॥ १६ ॥
viśeṣavidyāvaidagdhyavādavandyavinodanam ,
samānakulaśīlatvāddvidhābhāva iva sthitam 16
16. viśeṣavidyāvaidagdhyavādavandyavinodanam
samānakulaśīlatvāt dvidhābhāvaḥ iva sthitam
16. viśeṣavidyāvaidagdhyavādavandyavinodanam
samānakulaśīlatvāt dvidhābhāvaḥ iva sthitam
16. Whose diversion is laudable for his expertise in specialized knowledge and dialectics; and who, due to similarity in family and character, seems like a manifest duality.
अनुरक्तान्नृपान्साधून्वदान्यान्कारयत्सदा ।
यज्ञदानतपस्तीर्थन्यायार्थप्रेरणोन्मुखम् ॥ १७ ॥
anuraktānnṛpānsādhūnvadānyānkārayatsadā ,
yajñadānatapastīrthanyāyārthapreraṇonmukham 17
17. anuraktān nṛpān sādhūn vadānyān kārayat sadā
yajñadānatapastīrthanyāyārthapreraṇonmukham
17. sadā anuraktān nṛpān sādhūn vadānyān kārayat
yajñadānatapastīrthanyāyārthapreraṇonmukham
17. He always caused kings to be loyal, virtuous, and generous, and was (himself) intent on promoting Vedic rituals (yajña), charity (dāna), austerity (tapas), pilgrimages to holy places, justice, and righteous aims.
पुत्रदारद्विजातिस्त्रीभृत्यबन्धुजनैः सह ।
शुभभोजनपानार्हमुत्तमश्लाघ्यसंगति ॥ १८ ॥
putradāradvijātistrībhṛtyabandhujanaiḥ saha ,
śubhabhojanapānārhamuttamaślāghyasaṃgati 18
18. putra-dāra-dvijāti-strī-bhṛtya-bandhu-janaiḥ saha
śubha-bhojana-pāna-arham uttama-ślāghya-saṅgati
18. putra-dāra-dvijāti-strī-bhṛtya-bandhu-janaiḥ saha
śubha-bhojana-pāna-arham uttama-ślāghya-saṅgati
18. (He is united) with sons, wife, twice-born (dvijāti) persons, women, servants, and relatives, (enjoying) auspicious food and drink, and maintaining excellent, praiseworthy company.
भोगादिबद्धतृष्णत्वं दुःखदं विनिवारयत् ।
सुस्निग्धसंकथोदारं समाश्वासोत्तमास्पदम् ॥ १९ ॥
bhogādibaddhatṛṣṇatvaṃ duḥkhadaṃ vinivārayat ,
susnigdhasaṃkathodāraṃ samāśvāsottamāspadam 19
19. bhoga-ādi-baddha-tṛṣṇatvam duḥkha-dam vinivārayat
su-snigdha-saṃkatha-udāram samāśvāsa-uttama-āspadam
19. bhoga-ādi-baddha-tṛṣṇatvam duḥkha-dam vinivārayat
su-snigdha-saṃkatha-udāram samāśvāsa-uttama-āspadam
19. This state (or company) prevents the suffering caused by being bound by desires for enjoyments and the like. It is characterized by very affectionate and noble conversations, and provides a supreme source of solace.
ईदृशेनात्ममित्रेण स कलत्रेण संयुतः ।
स्वकर्मनाम्ना रमते स्वभावेनैव नेरितः ॥ २० ॥
īdṛśenātmamitreṇa sa kalatreṇa saṃyutaḥ ,
svakarmanāmnā ramate svabhāvenaiva neritaḥ 20
20. īdṛśena ātma-mitreṇa saḥ kalatreṇa saṃyutaḥ
svakarmanāmnā ramate svabhāveṇa eva na īritaḥ
20. saḥ īdṛśena ātma-mitreṇa kalatreṇa saṃyutaḥ
svakarmanāmnā ramate svabhāveṇa eva na īritaḥ
20. Such a person, united with a friend of the self (ātman) and his wife, finds delight through his own deeds (karma); he is truly impelled by his own intrinsic nature (svabhāva) alone, not (externally) urged.
श्रीराम उवाच ।
कलत्रमस्य मित्रस्य तदीयस्य मुनीश्वर ।
किं तत्किंरूपमेव स्यात्समासेनेव मे वद ॥ २१ ॥
śrīrāma uvāca ,
kalatramasya mitrasya tadīyasya munīśvara ,
kiṃ tatkiṃrūpameva syātsamāseneva me vada 21
21. śrī-rāma uvāca kalatram asya mitrasya tadīyasya
munīśvara kim tat kim-rūpam eva syāt samāsena eva me vada
21. śrī-rāma uvāca munīśvara asya mitrasya tadīyasya
kalatram kim tat kim-rūpam eva syāt me samāsena eva vada
21. Shri Rama said: "O chief of sages! Regarding the wife of this friend – what is her nature? What form does she truly take? Please tell me briefly."
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
स्नानदानतपोध्याननामानोऽस्य महामते ।
सन्ति पुत्रा महात्मानः स्वनुरक्ताखिलप्रजाः ॥ २२ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
snānadānatapodhyānanāmāno'sya mahāmate ,
santi putrā mahātmānaḥ svanuraktākhilaprajāḥ 22
22. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca snānadānatapōdhyānanāmānaḥ asya
mahāmate santi putrāḥ mahātmānaḥ svanuraktākhilaprajāḥ
22. Śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca.
mahāmate,
asya snānadānatapōdhyānanāmānaḥ mahātmānaḥ putrāḥ svanuraktākhilaprajāḥ santi.
22. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: O great-minded one, he has noble-minded sons named Ritual Bathing (snāna), Charity (dāna), Austerity (tapas), and Meditation (dhyāna). They are beloved by all his subjects.
चन्द्रलेखेव लोकस्य दृष्ट्यैवाह्लाददायिनी ।
अविनाभाविनी भार्या मुदितास्यानुरागिणी ॥ २३ ॥
candralekheva lokasya dṛṣṭyaivāhlādadāyinī ,
avinābhāvinī bhāryā muditāsyānurāgiṇī 23
23. candralekhā iva lokasya dṛṣṭyai eva āhlādadāyinī
avinābhāvinī bhāryā muditāsyā anurāgiṇī
23. (asya) avinābhāvinī,
muditāsyā,
anurāgiṇī bhāryā candralekhā iva lokasya dṛṣṭyai eva āhlādadāyinī (asti).
23. His inseparable wife, who, like a crescent moon, brings joy to the people by her mere sight, is always cheerful and loving.
करुणाकारणाकीर्णधना हृदयहारिणी ।
आनन्दजननी चास्य वयस्याऽव्यभिचारिणी ॥ २४ ॥
karuṇākāraṇākīrṇadhanā hṛdayahāriṇī ,
ānandajananī cāsya vayasyā'vyabhicāriṇī 24
24. karuṇākāraṇākīrṇadhanā hṛdayahāriṇī ca
asya ānandajananī vayasyā avyabhicāriṇī
24. ca,
asya karuṇākāraṇākīrṇadhanā,
hṛdayahāriṇī,
ānandajananī,
avyabhicāriṇī vayasyā (asti).
24. And his heart-captivating companion, whose wealth is characterized by compassionate motives, is a bringer of joy and ever-faithful.
समतास्य मता नित्यमास्ते हृदयवल्लभा ।
प्रतीहारी पुरः प्रह्वा संमुखं सुखदायिनी ॥ २५ ॥
samatāsya matā nityamāste hṛdayavallabhā ,
pratīhārī puraḥ prahvā saṃmukhaṃ sukhadāyinī 25
25. samatā asya matā nityam āste hṛdayavallabhā
pratīhārī puraḥ prahrā saṃmukham sukhadāyinī
25. asya samatā nityam hṛdayavallabhā matā āste.
prahrā sukhadāyinī pratīhārī puraḥ saṃmukham (tiṣṭhati).
25. Equanimity (samatā) is constantly cherished by him as his heart's beloved. A humble doorkeeper (pratīhārī), offering happiness, always stands before him.
धैर्ये धर्मे च धीः साधो नित्यमाधीयते च या ।
सास्य धीरस्य धुर्यस्य पुरो धन्यस्य धावति ॥ २६ ॥
dhairye dharme ca dhīḥ sādho nityamādhīyate ca yā ,
sāsya dhīrasya dhuryasya puro dhanyasya dhāvati 26
26. dhairye dharme ca dhīḥ sādho nityam ādhīyate ca yā
| sā asya dhīrasya dhuryasya puraḥ dhanyasya dhāvati
26. sādho yā dhīḥ dhairye dharme ca nityam ādhīyate sā
asya dhīrasya dhuryasya dhanyasya puraḥ dhāvati
26. O virtuous one, the intellect (dhī) that is constantly applied to steadfastness and to (natural) law (dharma) guides this patient, leading, and blessed person forward.
अस्य सन्ना समं स्कन्धे सर्वदैव महौजसः ।
विषयारिजये राज्ञो मैत्री मन्त्रप्रदायिनी ॥ २७ ॥
asya sannā samaṃ skandhe sarvadaiva mahaujasaḥ ,
viṣayārijaye rājño maitrī mantrapradāyinī 27
27. asya sannā samam skandhe sarvadā eva mahaujasaḥ
| viṣaya-ari-jaye rājñaḥ maitrī mantra-pradāyinī
27. asya mahaujasaḥ rājñaḥ skandhe sarvadā eva samam
sannā maitrī viṣaya-ari-jaye mantra-pradāyinī
27. For this greatly powerful king, an alliance (maitrī) that always rests equally on his shoulder provides counsel for the conquest of the enemies who are sense objects.
कार्याणामार्यमर्यादाचार्या चातुर्यशालिनी ।
सर्वेषामस्य मान्यस्य सत्यता स्वार्थदायिनी ॥ २८ ॥
kāryāṇāmāryamaryādācāryā cāturyaśālinī ,
sarveṣāmasya mānyasya satyatā svārthadāyinī 28
28. kāryāṇām ārya-maryādā-ācāryā cāturya-śālinī |
sarveṣām asya mānyasya satyatā svārtha-dāyinī
28. asya mānyasya sarveṣām kāryāṇām ārya-maryādā-ācāryā
cāturya-śālinī satyatā svārtha-dāyinī
28. For this respected individual, his truthfulness (satyatā) bestows his own welfare, being a skillful guide to noble conduct in all his actions.
इत्येवंपरिवारेण मित्रेण सह मन्त्रिणा ।
स्वकर्मणा व्यवहरन्न हृष्यति न कुप्यति ॥ २९ ॥
ityevaṃparivāreṇa mitreṇa saha mantriṇā ,
svakarmaṇā vyavaharanna hṛṣyati na kupyati 29
29. iti evam parivāreṇa mitreṇa saha mantriṇā |
svakarmaṇā vyavaharan na hṛṣyati na kupyati
29. iti evam parivāreṇa mitreṇa saha mantriṇā
svakarmaṇā vyavaharan na hṛṣyati na kupyati
29. Thus, engaged in his own actions (karma), accompanied by such a retinue, friends, and ministers, he neither rejoices nor becomes angry.
स यथास्थितमेवास्ते विनिर्वाणमना मुनिः ।
चित्रार्पित इवाजस्रं लोके व्यवहरन्नपि ॥ ३० ॥
sa yathāsthitamevāste vinirvāṇamanā muniḥ ,
citrārpita ivājasraṃ loke vyavaharannapi 30
30. saḥ yathāsthitam eva āste vinirvāṇamanāḥ muniḥ
citrārpite iva ajasram loke vyavaharan api
30. muniḥ vinirvāṇamanāḥ saḥ yathāsthitam eva āste
citrārpite iva ajasram loke vyavaharan api
30. The sage, whose mind is completely liberated (nirvāṇa), remains steadfast as he is, like one depicted in a painting, even while constantly engaging in worldly affairs.
वस्तुशून्येषु वादेषु मूकः शैलमयो यथा ।
निष्प्रयोजनशब्देषु परं बाधिर्यमागतः ॥ ३१ ॥
vastuśūnyeṣu vādeṣu mūkaḥ śailamayo yathā ,
niṣprayojanaśabdeṣu paraṃ bādhiryamāgataḥ 31
31. vastuśūnyeṣu vādeṣu mūkaḥ śailamayaḥ yathā
niṣprayojanaśabdeṣu param bādhiryam āgataḥ
31. vastuśūnyeṣu vādeṣu yathā śailamayaḥ mūkaḥ
[saḥ] niṣprayojanaśabdeṣu param bādhiryam āgataḥ
31. In arguments devoid of substance, he is as silent as a stone image. Regarding useless words, he has attained supreme deafness.
लोकाचारविरुद्धेषु शवं सकलकर्मसु ।
आर्याचारविचारेषु वासुकिर्वा बृहस्पतिः ॥ ३२ ॥
lokācāraviruddheṣu śavaṃ sakalakarmasu ,
āryācāravicāreṣu vāsukirvā bṛhaspatiḥ 32
32. lokācāraviruddheṣu śavam sakalakarmasu
āryācāravicāreṣu vāsukiḥ vā bṛhaspatiḥ
32. [saḥ] lokācāraviruddheṣu sakalakarmasu śavam [bhavati]
[tu] āryācāravicāreṣu vāsukiḥ vā bṛhaspatiḥ [bhavati]
32. In all actions contrary to public custom, he is like a corpse. However, in deliberations on noble conduct, he is like Vāsuki or Bṛhaspati.
प्रवृत्तवाक्पुण्यकथो जिह्मानां प्रतिभानवान् ।
निमेषेणैव निर्णेता वक्ताशु बहु वस्तुनः ॥ ३३ ॥
pravṛttavākpuṇyakatho jihmānāṃ pratibhānavān ,
nimeṣeṇaiva nirṇetā vaktāśu bahu vastunaḥ 33
33. pravṛttavāk puṇyakathaḥ jihmānām pratibhānavān
nimeṣeṇa eva nirṇetā vaktā āśu bahu vastunah
33. [saḥ] pravṛttavāk puṇyakathaḥ
[asti] jihmānām pratibhānavān
[asti] nimeṣeṇa eva nirṇetā āśu
bahu vastunah vaktā [ca asti]
33. He is eloquent in speech and his stories are virtuous. He is brilliant when dealing with the crooked. He is a decisive arbiter and a quick speaker on many topics in an instant.
समदृष्टिरुदारात्मा वदान्यः संविभागवान् ।
पेशलस्निग्धमधुरः सुन्दरः पुण्यकीर्तनः ॥ ३४ ॥
samadṛṣṭirudārātmā vadānyaḥ saṃvibhāgavān ,
peśalasnigdhamadhuraḥ sundaraḥ puṇyakīrtanaḥ 34
34. samadṛṣṭiḥ udārātmā vadānyaḥ saṃvibhāgavān
peśalasnigdhamadhuraḥ sundaraḥ puṇyakīrtanaḥ
34. samadṛṣṭiḥ udārātmā vadānyaḥ saṃvibhāgavān
peśalasnigdhamadhuraḥ sundaraḥ puṇyakīrtanaḥ
34. He possesses an impartial vision, a noble spirit (ātman), is generous, shares with others, and is charming, affectionate, sweet, beautiful, and celebrated for his virtues.
स्वभाव एषैव भवेत्प्रबुद्धधियां प्रयत्नेन तु नेदृशास्ते ।
भवन्ति नेन्द्वर्कहुताशनाद्याः क्वचित्परप्रेरणया प्रकाशाः ॥ ३५ ॥
svabhāva eṣaiva bhavetprabuddhadhiyāṃ prayatnena tu nedṛśāste ,
bhavanti nendvarkahutāśanādyāḥ kvacitparapreraṇayā prakāśāḥ 35
35. svabhāvaḥ eṣaḥ eva bhavet
prabuddhadhiyām prayatnena tu na īdṛśāḥ
te bhavanti na indu arka hutāśana
ādyāḥ kvacit parapreṇayā prakāśāḥ
35. eṣaḥ eva svabhāvaḥ prabuddhadhiyām
bhavet tu te īdṛśāḥ prayatnena na
bhavanti indu arka hutāśana ādyāḥ
kvacit parapreṇayā prakāśāḥ na bhavanti
35. This is indeed the intrinsic nature (svabhāva) of those with awakened intellects; such individuals do not become so through mere effort. Neither do the moon, sun, fire, and similar entities shine due to external prompting.
