1. Shri Rama said: What, indeed, is beautiful in a woman who is but a puppet made of flesh, whose cage of limbs is as unsteady as a machine, and who is endowed with tendons, bones, and joints?
त्वङ्मांसरक्तबाष्पाम्बु पृथक्कृत्वा विलोचनम् ।
समालोकय रम्यं चेत्किं मुधा परिमुह्यसि ॥ २ ॥
tvaṅmāṃsaraktabāṣpāmbu pṛthakkṛtvā vilocanam ,
samālokaya ramyaṃ cetkiṃ mudhā parimuhyasi 2
2. tvak māṃsa rakta bāṣpa ambu pṛthak kṛtvā vilocanam

2. Having separated the skin, flesh, blood, tears, and water (from the body) and examining the eye, if you find it charming, then why are you needlessly deluding yourself?
इतः केशा इतो रक्तमितीयं प्रमदातनुः ।
किमेतया निन्दितया करोति विपुलाशयः ॥ ३ ॥
itaḥ keśā ito raktamitīyaṃ pramadātanuḥ ,
kimetayā ninditayā karoti vipulāśayaḥ 3
3. itaḥ keśāḥ itaḥ raktam iti iyam pramadātanuḥ
kim etayā ninditayā karoti vipulāśayaḥ
3. iyam pramadātanuḥ itaḥ keśāḥ itaḥ raktam
iti vipulāśayaḥ ninditayā etayā kim karoti
3. This body of a woman is nothing but hair here, blood there, and so forth. What can a person of broad mind achieve with such a reprehensible thing?
वासोविलेपनैर्यानि लालितानि पुनः पुनः ।
तान्यङ्गान्यङ्ग लुण्ठन्ति क्रव्यादाः सर्वदेहिनाम् ॥ ४ ॥
vāsovilepanairyāni lālitāni punaḥ punaḥ ,
tānyaṅgānyaṅga luṇṭhanti kravyādāḥ sarvadehinām 4
4. vāsovilepanaiḥ yāni lālitāni punaḥ punaḥ tāni
aṅgāni aṅga luṇṭhanti kravyādāḥ sarvadehinām
4. aṅga yāni vāsovilepanaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ lālitāni
tāni aṅgāni sarvadehinām kravyādāḥ luṇṭhanti
4. O dear one, those very limbs which are pampered again and again with fine clothes and perfumes will eventually be ravaged by carrion-eaters, belonging to all embodied beings.
मेरुश्रृंगतटोल्लासिगंगाजलरयोपमा ।
दृष्टा यस्मिन्स्तने मुक्ताहारस्योल्लासशालिता ॥ ५ ॥

dṛṣṭā yasminstane muktāhārasyollāsaśālitā 5

5. The resplendence of a pearl necklace, which was seen on that breast, was comparable to the swift current of the Gaṅgā River gleaming on the slopes of Mount Meru.
रक्तमांसास्थिदिग्धानि करभस्य यथा वने ।
तथैवाङ्गानि कामिन्यास्तां प्रत्यपि हि को ग्रहः ॥ ७ ॥
raktamāṃsāsthidigdhāni karabhasya yathā vane ,
tathaivāṅgāni kāminyāstāṃ pratyapi hi ko grahaḥ 7
7. raktamāṃsāsthidigdhāni karabhasya yathā vane tathā
eva aṅgāni kāminyāḥ tām prati api hi kaḥ grahaḥ
7. yathā vane karabhasya raktamāṃsāsthidigdhāni tathā
eva kāminyāḥ aṅgāni tām prati api hi kaḥ grahaḥ
7. Just as the limbs of a camel in the forest are covered in blood, flesh, and bones, so too are the limbs of a lustful woman. What attraction can there truly be towards her, then?
आपातरमणीयत्वं कल्पते केवलं स्त्रियाः ।
मन्ये तदपि नास्त्यत्र मुने मोहैककारणम् ॥ ८ ॥
āpātaramaṇīyatvaṃ kalpate kevalaṃ striyāḥ ,
manye tadapi nāstyatra mune mohaikakāraṇam 8
8. āpātaramāṇīyatvam kalpate kevalam striyāḥ
manye tat api na asti atra mune mohaikakāraṇam
8. mune striyāḥ āpātaramāṇīyatvam kevalam kalpate
tat api atra na asti manye mohaikakāraṇam
8. Superficial charm is merely attributed to a woman. O sage, I believe that even this (superficial charm) is not truly present in her, but rather, she is the sole cause of delusion (moha).
विपुलोल्लासदायिन्या मदमन्मथपूर्वकम् ।
को विशेषो विकारिण्या मदिरायाः स्त्रियास्तथा ॥ ९ ॥
vipulollāsadāyinyā madamanmathapūrvakam ,
ko viśeṣo vikāriṇyā madirāyāḥ striyāstathā 9
9. vipulollāsadāyinyā madamanmathapūrvakam kaḥ
viśeṣaḥ vikāriṇyā madirāyāḥ striyāḥ tathā
9. vikāriṇyā madirāyāḥ tathā vipulollāsadāyinyā
madamanmathapūrvakam striyāḥ kaḥ viśeṣaḥ
9. What is the difference between agitating liquor (madirā) and a woman? Both cause great delight (ullāsa) and are characterized by intoxication and lust.
ललनालानसंलीना मुने मानवदन्तिनः ।
प्रबोधं नाधिगच्छन्ति दृढैरपि शमाङ्कुशैः ॥ १० ॥
lalanālānasaṃlīnā mune mānavadantinaḥ ,
prabodhaṃ nādhigacchanti dṛḍhairapi śamāṅkuśaiḥ 10
10. lalanalānasaṃlīnāḥ mune mānavadantinaḥ prabodham
na adhigacchanti dṛḍhaiḥ api śamāṅkuśaiḥ
10. mune,
lalanalānasaṃlīnāḥ mānavadantinaḥ dṛḍhaiḥ api śamāṅkuśaiḥ prabodham na adhigacchanti.
10. O sage, human elephants (men), who are entangled and confined by the chains of women, do not attain true awakening (prabodha) even with the firm goads of self-control (śama).
केशकज्जलधारिण्यो दुःस्पर्शा लोचनप्रियाः ।
दुष्कृताग्निशिखा नार्यो दहन्ति तृणवन्नरम् ॥ ११ ॥
keśakajjaladhāriṇyo duḥsparśā locanapriyāḥ ,
duṣkṛtāgniśikhā nāryo dahanti tṛṇavannaram 11
11. keśakajjaladhāriṇyaḥ duḥsparśāḥ locanapriyāḥ
duṣkṛtāgniśikhāḥ nāryaḥ dahanti tṛṇavat naram
11. keśakajjaladhāriṇyaḥ duḥsparśāḥ locanapriyāḥ duṣkṛtāgniśikhāḥ nāryaḥ naram tṛṇavat dahanti.
11. Women, with hair dark as kohl, though pleasing to the eyes, are dangerous to approach. Like flames of the fire of evil deeds, they burn a man as if he were straw.
ज्वलतामतिदूरेऽपि सरसा अपि नीरसाः ।
स्त्रियो हि नरकाग्नीनामिन्धनं चारु दारुणम् ॥ १२ ॥
jvalatāmatidūre'pi sarasā api nīrasāḥ ,
striyo hi narakāgnīnāmindhanaṃ cāru dāruṇam 12
12. jvalatām atidūre api sarasāḥ api nīrasāḥ
striyaḥ hi narakāgnīnām indhanam cāru dāruṇam
12. atidūre api jvalatām,
sarasāḥ api nīrasāḥ,
striyaḥ hi narakāgnīnām cāru dāruṇam indhanam.
12. Even if they ignite passions from afar, and though outwardly alluring, women are fundamentally devoid of true essence. Indeed, women are the beautiful yet dreadful fuel for the fires of hell.
विकीर्णाकारकबरी तरत्तारकलोचना ।
पुर्णेन्दुबिम्बवदना कुसुमोत्करहासिनी ॥ १३ ॥
vikīrṇākārakabarī tarattārakalocanā ,
purṇendubimbavadanā kusumotkarahāsinī 13
13. vikīrṇākārakabarī tarattārakalocanā
pūrṇendubimbavadanā kusumotkarahāsinī
13. vikīrṇākārakabarī tarattārakalocanā pūrṇendubimbavadanā kusumotkarahāsinī (asti).
13. She who has a disheveled-looking hair-braid, whose eyes have darting pupils, whose face is like the orb of a full moon, and who displays a smile like a multitude of blossoms.
लीलाविलोलपुरुषा कार्यसंहारकारिणी ।
परं विमोहनं बुद्धेः कामिनी दीर्घयामिनी ॥ १४ ॥
līlāvilolapuruṣā kāryasaṃhārakāriṇī ,
paraṃ vimohanaṃ buddheḥ kāminī dīrghayāminī 14
14. līlāvilolapuruṣā kāryasaṃhārakāriṇī param
vimohanam buddheḥ kāminī dīrghayāminī
14. kāminī līlāvilolapuruṣā kāryasaṃhārakāriṇī
buddheḥ param vimohanam dīrghayāminī
14. This charming woman, who makes men restless through her playful allure and causes the ruin of their undertakings, is a great bewilderment to the intellect (buddhi), like a long night.
पुष्पाभिराममधुरा करपल्लवशालिनी ।
भ्रमराक्षिविलासाढ्या स्तनस्तबकधारिणी ॥ १५ ॥
puṣpābhirāmamadhurā karapallavaśālinī ,
bhramarākṣivilāsāḍhyā stanastabakadhāriṇī 15
15. puṣpābhirāmamadhurā karapallavaśālinī
bhramarākṣivilāsāḍhyā stanastabakadhāriṇī
15. puṣpābhirāmamadhurā karapallavaśālinī
bhramarākṣivilāsāḍhyā stanastabakadhāriṇī
15. She is charmingly sweet like flowers, possessing hands as delicate as sprouts. She is endowed with the playful glances of her bee-like eyes and bears breasts like clusters of blossoms.
पुष्पकेसरगौराङ्गी नरमारणतत्परा ।
ददात्युन्मत्तवैवश्यं कान्ता विषलता यथा ॥ १६ ॥
puṣpakesaragaurāṅgī naramāraṇatatparā ,
dadātyunmattavaivaśyaṃ kāntā viṣalatā yathā 16
16. puṣpakesaragaurāṅgī naramāraṇatatparā dadāti
unmattavaivaśyam kāntā viṣalatā yathā
16. kāntā puṣpakesaragaurāṅgī naramāraṇatatparā
viṣalatā yathā unmattavaivaśyam dadāti
16. With a fair body like the filaments of a flower, she is intent on slaying men. This enchanting woman (kāntā) bestows bewildered helplessness, just like a poisonous creeper.
सत्कार्योच्छ्वासमात्रेण भुजङ्गदलनोत्कया ।
कान्तयोद्ध्रियते जन्तुः करभ्येवोरगो बिलात् ॥ १७ ॥
satkāryocchvāsamātreṇa bhujaṅgadalanotkayā ,
kāntayoddhriyate jantuḥ karabhyevorago bilāt 17
17. satkāryocchvāsamātreṇa bhujaṅgadalana-utkayā
kāntayā uddhriyate jantuḥ karabhyā iva uragaḥ bilāt
17. kāntayā satkāryocchvāsamātreṇa jantuḥ uddhriyate
bhujaṅgadalana-utkayā karabhyā bilāt uragaḥ iva
17. A living being (jantu) is drawn away by the charming woman (kāntā) merely by a slight show of good deeds, just as a she-camel, eager to crush serpents, draws a snake from its hole.
कामनाम्ना किरातेन विकीर्णा मुग्धचेतसाम् ।
नार्यो नरविहंगानामङ्गबन्धनवागुराः ॥ १८ ॥
kāmanāmnā kirātena vikīrṇā mugdhacetasām ,
nāryo naravihaṃgānāmaṅgabandhanavāgurāḥ 18
18. kāma-nāmnā kirātena vikīrṇā mugdha-cetasām
nāryaḥ nara-vihaṅgānām aṅga-bandhana-vāgurāḥ
18. nāryaḥ mugdha-cetasām nara-vihaṅgānām
aṅga-bandhana-vāgurāḥ kāma-nāmnā kirātena vikīrṇā
18. Women are like snares for binding the bodies of bird-like men, spread by the hunter named desire (kāma), for those whose minds are deluded.
ललनाविपुलालाने मनोमत्तमतंगजः ।
रतिशृङ्खलया ब्रह्मन्बद्धस्तिष्ठति मूकवत् ॥ १९ ॥
lalanāvipulālāne manomattamataṃgajaḥ ,
ratiśṛṅkhalayā brahmanbaddhastiṣṭhati mūkavat 19
19. lalanā-vipulālāne manaḥ-matta-mataṅgajaḥ
rati-śṛṅkhalayā brahman baddhaḥ tiṣṭhati mūka-vat
19. brahman manaḥ-matta-mataṅgajaḥ lalanā-vipulālāne
rati-śṛṅkhalayā baddhaḥ mūka-vat tiṣṭhati
19. O Brahman, the mind (manas), like a maddened elephant, remains bound and silent, as if mute, by the chain of passion (rati) to the vast elephant-tying post (ālānam) that is women.
जन्मपल्वलमत्स्यानां चित्तकर्दमचारिणाम् ।
पुंसां दुर्वासनारज्जुर्नारी बडिशपिण्डिका ॥ २० ॥
janmapalvalamatsyānāṃ cittakardamacāriṇām ,
puṃsāṃ durvāsanārajjurnārī baḍiśapiṇḍikā 20
20. janma-palvala-matsyānām citta-kardama-cāriṇām
puṃsām dur-vāsanā-rajjuḥ nārī baḍiśa-piṇḍikā
20. janma-palvala-matsyānām citta-kardama-cāriṇām
puṃsām nārī baḍiśa-piṇḍikā dur-vāsanā-rajjuḥ
20. For men, who are like fish in the pond of repeated births (saṃsāra) and who move in the mud of their minds, a woman is the bait on the hook and the rope of evil inclinations.
मन्दुरं च तुरङ्गाणामालानमिव दन्तिनाम् ।
पुंसां मन्त्र इवाहीनां बन्धनं वामलोचना ॥ २१ ॥
manduraṃ ca turaṅgāṇāmālānamiva dantinām ,
puṃsāṃ mantra ivāhīnāṃ bandhanaṃ vāmalocanā 21
21. manduram ca turaṅgāṇām ālānam iva dantinām
puṃsām mantraḥ iva ahīnām bandhanam vāma-locanā
21. vāma-locanā turaṅgāṇām manduram ca dantinām
ālānam iva ahīnām mantraḥ iva puṃsām bandhanam
21. A charming-eyed woman (vāmalocanā) is a stable for horses, a post for tying elephants, and a mantra for snakes (āhīnām) – indeed, she is a bond for men.
नानारसवती चित्रा भोगभूमिरियं मुने ।
स्त्रियमाश्रित्य संयाता परामिह हि संस्थितिम् ॥ २२ ॥
nānārasavatī citrā bhogabhūmiriyaṃ mune ,
striyamāśritya saṃyātā parāmiha hi saṃsthitim 22
22. nānārasavatī citrā bhogabhūmiḥ iyam mune
striyam āśritya saṃyātā parām iha hi saṃsthitim
22. mune iyam nānārasavatī citrā bhogabhūmiḥ
striyam āśritya iha parām saṃsthitim hi saṃyātā
22. O sage, this diverse and wondrous land of enjoyment has truly attained its supreme state here by relying on women.
सर्वेषां दोषरत्नानां सुसमुद्गिकयाऽनया ।
दुःखशृङ्खलया नित्यमलमस्तु मम स्त्रिया ॥ २३ ॥
sarveṣāṃ doṣaratnānāṃ susamudgikayā'nayā ,
duḥkhaśṛṅkhalayā nityamalamastu mama striyā 23
23. sarveṣām doṣaratnānām susamudgikayā anayā
duḥkhaśṛṅkhalayā nityam alam astu mama striyā
23. anayā sarveṣām doṣaratnānām susamudgikayā
duḥkhaśṛṅkhalayā striyā nityam mama alam astu
23. May I forever have enough of this woman, who is an excellent casket for all jewel-like faults and a constant chain of suffering.
किं स्तनेन किमक्ष्णा वा किं नितम्बेन किं भुवा ।
मांसमात्रैकसारेण करोम्यहमवस्तुना ॥ २४ ॥
kiṃ stanena kimakṣṇā vā kiṃ nitambena kiṃ bhuvā ,
māṃsamātraikasāreṇa karomyahamavastunā 24
24. kim stanena kim akṣṇā vā kim nitambena kim
bhuvā māṃsamātraikasāreṇa karomi aham avastunā
24. aham māṃsamātraikasāreṇa avastunā stanena kim?
akṣṇā vā kim? nitambena kim? bhuvā kim? karomi?
24. What use are breasts, or eyes, or hips, or eyebrows for me? What do I do with this worthless thing, whose sole essence is merely flesh?
इतो मांसमितो रक्तमितोऽस्थीनीति वासरैः ।
ब्रह्मन्कतिपयैरेव याति स्त्री विशरारुताम् ॥ २५ ॥
ito māṃsamito raktamito'sthīnīti vāsaraiḥ ,
brahmankatipayaireva yāti strī viśarārutām 25
25. itaḥ māṃsam itaḥ raktam itaḥ asthīni iti vāsaraiḥ
brahman katipayaiḥ eva yāti strī viśarārutām
25. brahman strī itaḥ māṃsam itaḥ raktam itaḥ asthīni
iti katipayaiḥ vāsaraiḥ eva viśarārutām yāti
25. O Brahman, a woman attains a state of decay in merely a few days, [being composed of] here flesh, here blood, and here bones.
यास्तात पुरुषैः स्थूलैर्ललिता मनुजैः प्रियाः ।
ता मुने प्रविभक्ताङ्ग्यः स्वपन्ति पितृभूमिषु ॥ २६ ॥
yāstāta puruṣaiḥ sthūlairlalitā manujaiḥ priyāḥ ,
tā mune pravibhaktāṅgyaḥ svapanti pitṛbhūmiṣu 26
26. yāḥ tāta puruṣaiḥ sthūlaiḥ lalitāḥ manujaiḥ priyāḥ
tāḥ mune pravibhaktāṅgyaḥ svapanti pitṛbhūmiṣu
26. tāta mune yāḥ puruṣaiḥ sthūlaiḥ manujaiḥ priyāḥ
lalitāḥ tāḥ pravibhaktāṅgyaḥ pitṛbhūmiṣu svapanti
26. O dear one, those beloved women, who were cherished by strong men, O sage, now lie with their limbs dismembered in the cremation grounds.
यस्मिन्घनतरस्नेहं मुखे पत्राङ्कुराः स्त्रियः ।
कान्तेन रचिता ब्रह्मन्पीयते तेन जङ्गले ॥ २७ ॥
yasminghanatarasnehaṃ mukhe patrāṅkurāḥ striyaḥ ,
kāntena racitā brahmanpīyate tena jaṅgale 27
27. yasmin ghanatarasneham mukhe patrāṅkurāḥ striyaḥ
kāntena racitāḥ brahman pīyate tena jaṅgale
27. brahman yasmin mukhe striyaḥ kāntena ghanatarasneham
patrāṅkurāḥ racitāḥ tena jaṅgale pīyate
27. O Brahman, the very thick unguent and the leaf-bud designs, which were fashioned by a beloved on the faces of women, are now consumed by the wilderness.
केशाः श्मशानवृक्षेषु यान्ति चामरलेखिकाम् ।
अस्थीन्युडुवदाभान्ति दिनैरवनिमण्डले ॥ २८ ॥
keśāḥ śmaśānavṛkṣeṣu yānti cāmaralekhikām ,
asthīnyuḍuvadābhānti dinairavanimaṇḍale 28
28. keśāḥ śmaśānavṛkṣeṣu yānti cāmaralekhikām
asthīni uḍuvat ābhānti dinaiḥ avanimaṇḍale
28. keśāḥ śmaśānavṛkṣeṣu cāmaralekhikām yānti
asthīni dinaiḥ avanimaṇḍale uḍuvat ābhānti
28. Hairs become like fly-whisk fibers on the trees of the cremation ground. Bones, after some days, gleam like stars on the surface of the earth.
पिबन्ति पांसवो रक्तं क्रव्यादाश्चाप्यनेकशः ।
चर्माणि च शिवा भुङ्क्ते खं यान्ति प्राणवायवः ॥ २९ ॥
pibanti pāṃsavo raktaṃ kravyādāścāpyanekaśaḥ ,
carmāṇi ca śivā bhuṅkte khaṃ yānti prāṇavāyavaḥ 29
29. pibanti pāṃsavaḥ raktam kravyādāḥ ca api anekaśaḥ
charmāṇi ca śivā bhuṅkte kham yānti prāṇavāyavaḥ
29. pāṃsavaḥ raktam pibanti kravyādāḥ ca api anekaśaḥ
śivā ca charmāṇi bhuṅkte prāṇavāyavaḥ kham yānti
29. Dust particles drink the blood, and carrion-eaters consume much of it. Jackals feast on the skins, and the vital breaths (prāṇa) return to the sky.
इत्येषा ललनाङ्गानामचिरेणैव भाविनी ।
स्थितिर्मया वः कथिता किं भ्रान्तिमनुधावथ ॥ ३० ॥
ityeṣā lalanāṅgānāmacireṇaiva bhāvinī ,
sthitirmayā vaḥ kathitā kiṃ bhrāntimanudhāvatha 30
30. iti eṣā lalanā-aṅgānām acireṇa eva bhāvinī
sthitiḥ mayā vaḥ kathitā kim bhrāntim anudhāvatha
30. mayā vaḥ lalanā-aṅgānām eṣā bhāvinī sthitiḥ
acireṇa eva iti kathitā kim bhrāntim anudhāvatha
30. I have thus quickly explained to you the ephemeral nature of women's bodies. Why do you then pursue such delusion (bhrānti)?
भूतपञ्चकसंघट्टसंस्थानं ललनाभिधम् ।
रसादभिपतत्वेतत्कथं नाम धियान्वितः ॥ ३१ ॥
bhūtapañcakasaṃghaṭṭasaṃsthānaṃ lalanābhidham ,
rasādabhipatatvetatkathaṃ nāma dhiyānvitaḥ 31
31. bhūta-pañcaka-saṃghaṭṭa-saṃsthānam lalanā-abhidham
rasāt abhipatatu etat katham nāma dhiyā-anvitaḥ
31. dhiyā-anvitaḥ nāma katham bhūta-pañcaka-saṃghaṭṭa-saṃsthānam
lalanā-abhidham etat rasāt abhipatatu
31. How can a wise person, endowed with intelligence, pursue with passion (rasa) this form, called 'woman', which is merely a composite structure of the five elements (bhūta)?
शाखाप्रतानगहना कट्वम्लफलमालिनी ।
सुतालोत्तालतामेति चिन्ता कान्तानुसारिणी ॥ ३२ ॥

sutālottālatāmeti cintā kāntānusāriṇī 32
32. śākhā-pratāna-gahanā kaṭu-amla-phala-mālinī
su-tālottālatām eti cintā kāntā-anusāriṇī
32. kāntā-anusāriṇī cintā śākhā-pratāna-gahanā
kaṭu-amla-phala-mālinī su-tālottālatām eti
32. Worry (cintā), which follows a beloved woman, becomes a dense thicket of branches and creepers, bears bitter and sour fruits, and reaches an extremely agitated and tumultuous state.
कान्दिग्भूततया चेतो घनगर्धान्धमाकुलम् ।
परं मोहमुपादत्ते यूथभ्रष्टमृगो यथा ॥ ३३ ॥
kāndigbhūtatayā ceto ghanagardhāndhamākulam ,
paraṃ mohamupādatte yūthabhraṣṭamṛgo yathā 33
33. kāndigbhūtatayā cetaḥ ghana-gardha-andham ākulam
param moham upādatte yūtha-bhraṣṭa-mṛgaḥ yathā
33. yathā yūtha-bhraṣṭa-mṛgaḥ kāndigbhūtatayā
ghana-gardha-andham ākulam cetaḥ param moham upādatte
33. The mind (cetaḥ), becoming bewildered, intensely blinded by craving, and agitated, falls into utter delusion (moha), just like a deer separated from its herd.
शोच्यतां परमां याति तरुणस्तरुणीपरः ।
निबद्धः करिणीलोलो विन्ध्यखाते यथा गजः ॥ ३४ ॥
śocyatāṃ paramāṃ yāti taruṇastaruṇīparaḥ ,
nibaddhaḥ kariṇīlolo vindhyakhāte yathā gajaḥ 34
34. śocyatām paramām yāti taruṇaḥ taruṇīparaḥ |
nibaddhaḥ kariṇīlolaḥ vindhyakhāte yathā gajaḥ ||
34. taruṇaḥ taruṇīparaḥ paramām śocyatām yāti,
yathā kariṇīlolaḥ gajaḥ vindhyakhāte nibaddhaḥ.
34. A young man who is obsessed with young women falls into the utmost misery, just like an elephant, eager for a female elephant, becomes ensnared in a pit in the Vindhya mountains.
यस्य स्त्री तस्य भोगेच्छा निःस्त्रीकस्य क्व भोगभूः ।
स्त्रियं त्यक्त्वा जगत्त्यक्तं जगत्त्यक्त्वा सुखी भवेत् ॥ ३५ ॥
yasya strī tasya bhogecchā niḥstrīkasya kva bhogabhūḥ ,
striyaṃ tyaktvā jagattyaktaṃ jagattyaktvā sukhī bhavet 35
35. yasya strī tasya bhoga-icchā niḥstrīkasya kva bhogabhūḥ |
striyam tyaktvā jagat tyaktam jagat tyaktvā sukhī bhavet ||
35. yasya strī,
tasya bhoga-icchā (asti).
niḥstrīkasya kva bhogabhūḥ? striyam tyaktvā jagat tyaktam (bhavati).
jagat tyaktvā sukhī bhavet.
35. He who has a wife will have desires for worldly enjoyments; but for one without a wife, where is the scope for enjoyment? By renouncing women, the world is renounced; and by renouncing the world, one becomes truly happy.
आपातमात्ररमणेषु सुदुस्तरेषु भोगेषु नाहमलिपक्षतिचञ्चलेषु ।
ब्रह्मन्रमे मरणरोगजरादिभीत्या शाम्याम्यहं परमुपैमि पदं प्रयत्नात् ॥ ३६ ॥
āpātamātraramaṇeṣu sudustareṣu bhogeṣu nāhamalipakṣaticañcaleṣu ,
brahmanrame maraṇarogajarādibhītyā śāmyāmyahaṃ paramupaimi padaṃ prayatnāt 36
36. āpātamātraramaṇeṣu sudustareṣu bhogeṣu
na aham alipakṣaticañcaleṣu | brahman
rame maraṇarogajarādibhītyā śāmyāmi
aham param upaimi padam prayatnāt ||
36. brahman! aham āpātamātraramaṇeṣu sudustareṣu alipakṣaticañcaleṣu bhogeṣu na rame.
maraṇarogajarādibhītyā aham śāmyāmi (ca) prayatnāt param padam upaimi.
36. O Brahman! I do not revel in these worldly enjoyments which are pleasing only superficially, are exceedingly difficult to overcome, and are as ephemeral as the fluttering of a bee's wings. Fearing death, illness, old age, and so forth, I find peace; I strive with effort to attain the supreme state.
