1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, Mādhava, the destroyer of foes, spoke words to the assembly of gods, who were roaring and exceedingly enraged, just as a cloud speaks to a flock of peacocks.
श्रीभगवानुवाच ।
विबुधा मा विषण्णाः स्थ प्रह्लादो भक्तिमानिति ।
पाश्चात्यं जन्म तस्येदं मोक्षार्होऽसावरिंदमः ॥ २ ॥
śrībhagavānuvāca ,
vibudhā mā viṣaṇṇāḥ stha prahlādo bhaktimāniti ,
pāścātyaṃ janma tasyedaṃ mokṣārho'sāvariṃdamaḥ 2
2. śrī bhagavān uvāca | vibudhāḥ mā
viṣaṇṇāḥ stha prahlādaḥ bhaktimān
iti | pāścātyam janma tasya idam
mokṣārhaḥ asau arimdamaḥ || 2 ||
2. śrī bhagavān uvāca he vibudhāḥ,
'prahlādaḥ bhaktimān iti' mā viṣaṇṇāḥ stha he arimdamaḥ,
idam tasya pāścātyam janma (asti),
asau mokṣārhaḥ (asti) 2
2. Lord Bhagavān said: "O gods, do not be disheartened, thinking, 'Prahlāda is full of devotion (bhakti).' This is his final birth; he is indeed worthy of liberation (mokṣa), O subduer of foes."
अत उत्तरमेतेन गर्भता दनुजन्मना ।
न कर्तव्या प्रदग्धेन बीजेनेवाङ्कुरक्रिया ॥ ३ ॥
ata uttarametena garbhatā danujanmanā ,
na kartavyā pradagdhena bījenevāṅkurakriyā 3
3. ataḥ uttaram etena garbhatā danujanmanā | na
kartavyā pradagdhena bījena iva aṅkurakriyā || 3 ||
3. ataḥ uttaram etena danujanmanā garbhatā na kartavyā,
pradagdhena bījena iva aṅkurakriyā (na kartavyā) 3
3. Therefore, no further births (in the demon lineage) should be caused by this demon-born one, just as a burnt seed cannot produce a sprout.
गुणवान्निर्गुणो जात इत्यनर्थक्रमं विदुः ।
निर्गुणो गुणवाञ्जात इत्याहुः सिद्धिदं क्रमम् ॥ ४ ॥
guṇavānnirguṇo jāta ityanarthakramaṃ viduḥ ,
nirguṇo guṇavāñjāta ityāhuḥ siddhidaṃ kramam 4
4. guṇavān nirguṇaḥ jātaḥ iti anarthakramam viduḥ |
nirguṇaḥ guṇavān jātaḥ iti āhuḥ siddhidam kramam || 4 ||
4. 'guṇavān nirguṇaḥ jātaḥ' iti (janāḥ) anarthakramam viduḥ
'nirguṇaḥ guṇavān jātaḥ' iti (janāḥ) siddhidam kramam āhuḥ 4
4. They consider it a progression to misfortune when a virtuous person becomes devoid of virtues. They call it a progression leading to perfection when one devoid of virtues becomes virtuous.
आत्मीयानि विचित्राणि भुवनान्यमरोत्तमाः ।
प्रयात नासुखायैषा प्राह्लादी गुणितेह वः ॥ ५ ॥
ātmīyāni vicitrāṇi bhuvanānyamarottamāḥ ,
prayāta nāsukhāyaiṣā prāhlādī guṇiteha vaḥ 5
5. ātmīyāni vicitrāṇi bhuvanāni amarottamāḥ
prayāta na asukhāya eṣā prāhlādī guṇitā iha vaḥ
5. amarottamāḥ ātmīyāni vicitrāṇi bhuvanāni prayāta.
eṣā prāhlādī iha vaḥ asukhāya na guṇitā.
5. O best of immortals, go to your own diverse worlds. This happiness related to Prahlāda is not considered here to be the cause of your sorrow.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा विबुधांस्तत्र क्षीरोदार्णववीचिषु ।
अन्तर्धानं ययौ देवस्तटतापिच्छगुच्छवत् ॥ ६ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
ityuktvā vibudhāṃstatra kṣīrodārṇavavīciṣu ,
antardhānaṃ yayau devastaṭatāpicchagucchavat 6
6. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca iti uktvā vibudhān tatra kṣīrodārṇavavīciṣu
antardhānam yayau devaḥ taṭatāpicchagucchavat
6. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca.
iti uktvā,
devaḥ tatra kṣīrodārṇavavīciṣu taṭatāpicchagucchavat antardhānam yayau.
6. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having spoken thus to the gods there among the waves of the milk ocean, the deity vanished like a cluster of tāpiccha flowers on the bank.
सोऽपि संपूजितहरिः सुरौघो व्रजदम्बरम् ।
पुनर्मन्दरनिर्धूतात्कणजालमिवार्णवात् ॥ ७ ॥
so'pi saṃpūjitahariḥ suraugho vrajadambaram ,
punarmandaranirdhūtātkaṇajālamivārṇavāt 7
7. saḥ api sampūjitahariḥ suraughaḥ vrajan ambaram
punaḥ mandaranirdhūtāt kaṇajālam iva arṇavāt
7. saḥ api sampūjitahariḥ.
suraughaḥ punaḥ ambaram vrajan,
mandaranirdhūtāt arṇavāt kaṇajālam iva (āsīt).
7. He (Prahlāda), having worshipped Hari, and the host of gods, again ascended to the sky, like a spray of particles from the ocean churned by Mount Mandara.
प्रह्लादं प्रति गीर्वाणास्ततः स्निग्धत्वमाययुः ।
महान्तो यत्र नोद्विग्नास्तत्र विश्वासवन्मनः ॥ ८ ॥
prahlādaṃ prati gīrvāṇāstataḥ snigdhatvamāyayuḥ ,
mahānto yatra nodvignāstatra viśvāsavanmanaḥ 8
8. prahlādam prati gīrvāṇāḥ tataḥ snigdhatvam āyayuḥ
mahāntaḥ yatra na udvignāḥ tatra viśvāsavat manaḥ
8. tataḥ gīrvāṇāḥ prahlādam prati snigdhatvam āyayuḥ.
yatra mahāntaḥ na udvignāḥ,
tatra manaḥ viśvāsavat.
8. Then the gods became affectionate towards Prahlāda. Where great ones are not agitated, there the mind is filled with trust.
प्रत्यहं पूजयामास देवदेवं जनार्दनम् ।
मनसा कर्मणा वाचा प्रह्लादो भक्तिमानिति ॥ ९ ॥
pratyahaṃ pūjayāmāsa devadevaṃ janārdanam ,
manasā karmaṇā vācā prahlādo bhaktimāniti 9
9. pratyaham pūjayāmāsa devadevam janārdanam
manasā karmaṇā vācā prahlādaḥ bhaktimān iti
9. bhaktimān prahlādaḥ pratyaham manasā karmaṇā
vācā devadevam janārdanam pūjayāmāsa iti
9. Prahlada, who was full of devotion (bhakti), worshipped Janardana, the God of gods, daily with his mind, actions (karma), and speech.
अथ पूजापरस्यास्य समवर्धन्त कालतः ।
विवेकानन्दवैराग्यविभवप्रमुखा गुणाः ॥ १० ॥
atha pūjāparasyāsya samavardhanta kālataḥ ,
vivekānandavairāgyavibhavapramukhā guṇāḥ 10
10. atha pūjāparasya asya samavardhanta kālataḥ
vivekānandavairāgyavibhavapramukhāḥ guṇāḥ
10. atha kālataḥ pūjāparasya asya
vivekānandavairāgyavibhavapramukhāḥ guṇāḥ samavardhanta
10. Then, as time passed, qualities such as discrimination (viveka), bliss, and dispassion (vairāgya) increased in him who was devoted to worship.
नाभ्यनन्ददसौ भोगपूगं शुष्कमिव द्रुमम् ।
न चारमत कान्तासु मृगो लोकमहीष्विव ॥ ११ ॥
nābhyanandadasau bhogapūgaṃ śuṣkamiva drumam ,
na cāramata kāntāsu mṛgo lokamahīṣviva 11
11. na abhyanandat asau bhogapūgam śuṣkam iva drumam
na ca aramat kāntāsu mṛgaḥ lokamahīṣu iva
11. asau śuṣkam drumam iva bhogapūgam na abhyanandat
ca mṛgaḥ lokamahīṣu iva kāntāsu na aramat
11. Prahlada did not delight in the multitude of worldly enjoyments, which were like a dry tree to him. Nor did he find pleasure in women, just as a deer finds no pleasure in barren lands.
न रेमे लोकचर्यासु शास्त्रार्थकथनादृते ।
न जायते रतिस्तस्य दृश्ये स्थल इवाजिनी ॥ १२ ॥
na reme lokacaryāsu śāstrārthakathanādṛte ,
na jāyate ratistasya dṛśye sthala ivājinī 12
12. na reme lokacaryāsu śāstrārthakathanāt ṛte
na jāyate ratiḥ tasya dṛśye sthale iva ajinī
12. śāstrārthakathanāt ṛte lokacaryāsu na reme.
tasya dṛśye (viṣaye) sthale iva ajinī ratiḥ na jāyate.
12. He did not delight in worldly activities, except for explaining the meaning of the scriptures. For him, no pleasure arose from visible objects, just as a creeping plant (ajinī) does not thrive in a dry place.
न विशश्राम चेतोऽस्य भोगरोगानुरञ्जने ।
मुक्ताफलमसंश्लिष्टं मुक्ताफल इवामले ॥ १३ ॥
na viśaśrāma ceto'sya bhogarogānurañjane ,
muktāphalamasaṃśliṣṭaṃ muktāphala ivāmale 13
13. na viśaśrāma cetaḥ asya bhogarogānurañjane
muktāphalam asaṃśliṣṭam muktāphale iva amale
13. asya cetaḥ bhogarogānurañjane na viśaśrāma
amale muktāphale asaṃśliṣṭam muktāphalam iva
13. His mind (cetaḥ) did not settle into attachment to the disease-like pleasures, just as a pearl (muktāphala) remains unstuck upon a pure pearl.
त्यक्तभोगादिकलनं विश्रान्तिमनुपागतम् ।
चेतः केवलमस्यासीद्दोलायामिव योजितम् ॥ १४ ॥
tyaktabhogādikalanaṃ viśrāntimanupāgatam ,
cetaḥ kevalamasyāsīddolāyāmiva yojitam 14
14. tyaktabhogādikalanam viśrāntim anupāgatam
cetaḥ kevalam asya āsīt dolāyām iva yojitam
14. asya cetaḥ kevalam tyaktabhogādikalanam
viśrāntim anupāgatam āsīt dolāyām iva yojitam
14. His mind (cetaḥ), having abandoned all thoughts of pleasures and the like, had not yet attained (true) rest; it was merely engaged as if placed upon a swing.
प्राह्लादीं तां स्थितिं विष्णुर्देवः क्षीरोदमन्दिरात् ।
विवेद सर्वगतया धिया परमकान्तया ॥ १५ ॥
prāhlādīṃ tāṃ sthitiṃ viṣṇurdevaḥ kṣīrodamandirāt ,
viveda sarvagatayā dhiyā paramakāntayā 15
15. prāhlādīm tām sthitim viṣṇuḥ devaḥ kṣīrodamandirāt
viveda sarvagatayā dhiyā paramakāntayā
15. devaḥ viṣṇuḥ kṣīrodamandirāt paramakāntayā
sarvagatayā dhiyā tām prāhlādīm sthitim viveda
15. From his abode in the milk-ocean (Kṣīroda-mandira), Lord Viṣṇu, the deity (devaḥ), came to know of that state (sthiti) of Prahlāda, through his supremely beloved and all-pervading intellect (dhī).
अथ पातालमार्गेण विष्णुराह्लादिताग्रतः ।
पूजादेवगृहं तस्य प्रह्लादस्य समाययौ ॥ १६ ॥
atha pātālamārgeṇa viṣṇurāhlāditāgrataḥ ,
pūjādevagṛhaṃ tasya prahlādasya samāyayau 16
16. atha pātālamārgeṇa viṣṇuḥ āhlāditāgrataḥ
pūjādevagṛham tasya prahlādasya samāyayau
16. atha viṣṇuḥ pātālamārgeṇa āhlāditāgrataḥ
tasya prahlādasya pūjādevagṛham samāyayau
16. Then (atha), Lord Viṣṇu, delighted and appearing before (Prahlāda), arrived at Prahlāda's worship-house, via the path to the netherworlds (pātāla-mārga).
विज्ञायाभ्यागतं देवं पूजया द्विगुणेद्धया ।
दैत्येन्द्रः पुण्डरीकाक्षमादरात्पर्यपूजयत् ॥ १७ ॥
vijñāyābhyāgataṃ devaṃ pūjayā dviguṇeddhayā ,
daityendraḥ puṇḍarīkākṣamādarātparyapūjayat 17
17. vijñāya abhyāgatam devam pūjayā dviguṇeddhyā
daityendraḥ puṇḍarīkākṣam ādarāt paryapūjayat
17. daityendraḥ abhyāgatam devam vijñāya dviguṇeddhyā
pūjayā ādarāt puṇḍarīkākṣam paryapūjayat
17. Recognizing the arrived god (deva), the lord of the demons respectfully worshipped the lotus-eyed one (Puṇḍarīkākṣa) with worship intensified twofold.
पूजागृहगतं देवं प्रत्यक्षावस्थितं हरिम् ।
प्रह्लादः परमप्रीतो गिरा तुष्टाव पुष्टया ॥ १८ ॥
pūjāgṛhagataṃ devaṃ pratyakṣāvasthitaṃ harim ,
prahlādaḥ paramaprīto girā tuṣṭāva puṣṭayā 18
18. pūjāgṛhagatam devam pratyakṣa avasthitam harim
prahlādaḥ paramaprītaḥ girā tuṣṭāva puṣṭayā
18. prahlādaḥ paramaprītaḥ pūjāgṛhagatam devam
pratyakṣa avasthitam harim puṣṭayā girā tuṣṭāva
18. Prahlada, extremely pleased, praised Hari (Hari), who was directly present in the worship chamber, with powerful speech.
प्रह्लाद उवाच ।
त्रिभुवनभवनाभिरामकोशं सकलकलङ्कहरं परं प्रकाशम् ।
अशरणशरणं शरण्यमीशं हरिमजमच्युतमीश्वरं प्रपद्ये ॥ १९ ॥
prahlāda uvāca ,
tribhuvanabhavanābhirāmakośaṃ sakalakalaṅkaharaṃ paraṃ prakāśam ,
aśaraṇaśaraṇaṃ śaraṇyamīśaṃ harimajamacyutamīśvaraṃ prapadye 19
19. prahlādaḥ uvāca tribhuvanabhavanābhirāmakośam
sakalakalaṅkaharam param
prakāśam aśaraṇaśaraṇam śaraṇyam īśam
harim ajam acyutam īśvaram prapadye

19. Prahlada said: I take refuge in Hari (Hari), the unborn (aja), the imperishable (acyuta), the supreme lord (īśvara), who is a delightful treasury (kośa) for the dwellings of the three worlds, who removes all impurities, who is the supreme light, and who is the refuge of the helpless and worthy of all protection.
कुवलयदलनीलसंनिकाशं शरदमलाम्बरकोटरोपमानम् ।
भ्रमरतिमिरकज्जलाञ्जनाभं सरसिजचक्रगदाधरं प्रपद्ये ॥ २० ॥
kuvalayadalanīlasaṃnikāśaṃ śaradamalāmbarakoṭaropamānam ,
bhramaratimirakajjalāñjanābhaṃ sarasijacakragadādharaṃ prapadye 20
20. kuvalayadalnīlasaṃnikāśam śaradamalāmbarakoṭaropamānam
bhramaratimirakajjalāñjanābham sarasijacakragadādharam prapadye
20. kuvalayadalnīlasaṃnikāśam śaradamalāmbarakoṭaropamānam

20. I take refuge in Him whose complexion resembles the blue lotus petal, whose splendor is like the pure expanse of an autumnal sky, whose hue is dark like a bee, darkness, and collyrium, and who holds a lotus, a discus, and a mace.
विमलमलिकलापकोमलाङ्गं सितदलपङ्कजकुड्मलाभशङ्खम् ।
श्रुतिरणितविरञ्चिचञ्चरीकं स्वहृदयपद्मदलाश्रयं प्रपद्ये ॥ २१ ॥
vimalamalikalāpakomalāṅgaṃ sitadalapaṅkajakuḍmalābhaśaṅkham ,
śrutiraṇitavirañcicañcarīkaṃ svahṛdayapadmadalāśrayaṃ prapadye 21
21. vimalam ali-kalāpa-komala-aṅgam
sita-dala-paṅkaja-kuḍmala-ābha-śaṅkham
śruti-raṇita-virañci-cañcarīkam
sva-hṛdaya-padma-dala-āśrayam prapadye

21. I take refuge in the one whose tender limbs are as dark and pure as a swarm of bees, whose conch-like neck gleams like a bud of a white lotus, around whom Brahma (virañci), like a bee, hums with the sound of the Vedas (śruti), and who dwells in the petals of one's own heart-lotus.
सितनखगणतारकावकीर्णं स्मितधवलाननपीवरेन्दुबिम्बम् ।
हृदयमणिमरीचिजालगङ्गं हरिशरदम्बरमाततं प्रपद्ये ॥ २२ ॥
sitanakhagaṇatārakāvakīrṇaṃ smitadhavalānanapīvarendubimbam ,
hṛdayamaṇimarīcijālagaṅgaṃ hariśaradambaramātataṃ prapadye 22
22. sita-nakha-gaṇa-tārakā-avakīrṇam
smita-dhavala-ānana-pīvara-indu-bimbam
hṛdaya-maṇi-marīci-jāla-gaṅgam
hari-śarat-ambaram ātatam prapadye
22. ātatam sita-nakha-gaṇa-tārakā-avakīrṇam
smita-dhavala-ānana-pīvara-indu-bimbam

22. I take refuge in the vast and pervading one, whose clusters of white nails are scattered like stars, whose smiling, radiant face resembles a full moon disc, whose heart-jewel emanates a network of rays forming the Ganga, and who is like the clear autumn sky of Hari.
अविरलकृतसृष्टिसर्वलीनं सततमजातमवर्धनं विशालम् ।
गुणशतजरठाभिजातदेहं तरुदलशायिनमर्भकं प्रपद्ये ॥ २३ ॥
aviralakṛtasṛṣṭisarvalīnaṃ satatamajātamavardhanaṃ viśālam ,
guṇaśatajaraṭhābhijātadehaṃ tarudalaśāyinamarbhakaṃ prapadye 23
23. avirala-kṛta-sṛṣṭi-sarva-līnam
satatam ajātam avardhanam viśālam
guṇa-śata-jaratha-abhijāta-deham
taru-dala-śāyinam arbhakam prapadye

23. I take refuge in the infant, who sleeps on a tree-leaf, into whom all continuously created existence merges, who is always unborn, without growth, and vast, and whose body is intrinsically perfected by hundreds of inherent qualities.
नवविकसितपद्मरेणुगौरं स्फुटकमलावपुषा विभूषिताङ्गम् ।
दिनशमसमयारुणाङ्गरागं कनकनिभाम्बरसुन्दरं प्रपद्ये ॥ २४ ॥
navavikasitapadmareṇugauraṃ sphuṭakamalāvapuṣā vibhūṣitāṅgam ,
dinaśamasamayāruṇāṅgarāgaṃ kanakanibhāmbarasundaraṃ prapadye 24
24. nava-vikasita-padma-reṇu-gauram
sphuṭa-kamalā-vapuṣā vibhūṣita-aṅgam

24. I take refuge in Him whose complexion is golden like the pollen of a freshly bloomed lotus, whose body is adorned with the manifest form of Lakṣmī, whose bodily hue is reddish like the evening twilight, and who is beautiful in garments shining like gold.
दितिसुतनलिनीतुषारपातं सुरनलिनीसततोदितार्कबिम्बम् ।
कमलजनलिनीजलावपूरं हृदि नलिनीनिलयं विभुं प्रपद्ये ॥ २५ ॥
ditisutanalinītuṣārapātaṃ suranalinīsatatoditārkabimbam ,
kamalajanalinījalāvapūraṃ hṛdi nalinīnilayaṃ vibhuṃ prapadye 25

25. I surrender to the all-pervading Lord, who is like a frost-fall to the lotuses that are the demons, a perpetually rising sun to the lotuses that are the gods, a deluge of water to the lotuses that represent Brahmā's creations, and the abode of Lakṣmī within the heart.
त्रिभुवननलिनीसितारविन्दं तिमिरसमानविमोहदीपमग्र्यम् ।
स्फुटतरमजडं चिदात्मतत्त्वं जगदखिलार्तिहरं हरिं प्रपद्ये ॥ २६ ॥
tribhuvananalinīsitāravindaṃ timirasamānavimohadīpamagryam ,
sphuṭataramajaḍaṃ cidātmatattvaṃ jagadakhilārtiharaṃ hariṃ prapadye 26

jagat akhilārtiharam harim prapadye

26. I surrender to Hari, who is like a white lotus for the lotuses of the three worlds, the pre-eminent lamp that dispels delusion resembling darkness, the supremely manifest and non-inert reality of consciousness and the self (ātman), and the remover of all suffering from the world.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इति गुणबहुलाभिर्वाग्भिरभ्यर्चितोऽसौ हरिरसुरविनाशः श्रीनिषण्णांसदेशः ।
जलद इव मयूरं प्रीतिमान्प्रीयमाणं कुवलयदलनीलः प्रत्युवाचासुरेन्द्रम् ॥ २७ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
iti guṇabahulābhirvāgbhirabhyarcito'sau harirasuravināśaḥ śrīniṣaṇṇāṃsadeśaḥ ,
jalada iva mayūraṃ prītimānprīyamāṇaṃ kuvalayadalanīlaḥ pratyuvācāsurendram 27
27. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca iti guṇabahulābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ
abhyarcitaḥ asau hariḥ asuravināśaḥ
śrīnisaṇṇāṃsadeśaḥ jaladaḥ iva mayūram prītimān prīyamāṇam
kuvalayadalalīlaḥ prati uvāca asurendram
27. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca iti (asau) hariḥ guṇabahulābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ abhyarcitaḥ,
asuravināśaḥ,
śrīnisaṇṇāṃsadeśaḥ,
kuvalayadalalīlaḥ,
prītimān (san),
prīyamāṇam asurendram jaladaḥ iva mayūram prati uvāca
27. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Thus, Hari, who was praised with many words rich in virtues, the destroyer of demons, whose shoulder was graced by Śrī (Lakṣmī), and who was dark-blue like a blue lotus petal, then, being pleased himself, replied to the delighted lord of demons (Prahlāda), just as a cloud responds to a peacock.
