श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच ।
अथोनषोडशे वर्षे वर्तमाने रघूद्वहे ।
रामानुयायिनि तथा शत्रुघ्ने लक्ष्मणेऽपि च ॥ १ ॥
śrīvālmīkiruvāca ,
athonaṣoḍaśe varṣe vartamāne raghūdvahe ,
rāmānuyāyini tathā śatrughne lakṣmaṇe'pi ca 1
1. śrīvālmīkiḥ uvāca atha ūnaṣoḍaśe varṣe vartamāne
raghūdvaha rāmānuyāyini tathā śatrughne lakṣmaṇe api ca
1. Sri Valmiki said: Now, when the fifteenth year of life was ongoing for Rama, the upholder of Raghu's lineage, and likewise for Lakshmana, who was a follower of Rama, and for Shatrughna as well.
भरते संस्थिते नित्यं मातामहगृहे सुखम् ।
पालयत्यवनिं राज्ञि यथावदखिलाभिमाम् ॥ २ ॥
bharate saṃsthite nityaṃ mātāmahagṛhe sukham ,
pālayatyavaniṃ rājñi yathāvadakhilābhimām 2
2. bharate saṃsthite nityam mātāmahagṛhe sukham
pālayati avanim rājñi yathāvat akhilābhimām
2. While Bharata was always comfortably staying at his maternal grandfather's house, (the king) ruled the entire earth, O Queen (rājñī), appropriately and with all its honor.
जन्यत्रार्थं च पुत्राणां प्रत्यहं सह मन्त्रिभिः ।
कृतमन्त्रे महाप्राज्ञे तज्ज्ञे दशरथे नृपे ॥ ३ ॥
janyatrārthaṃ ca putrāṇāṃ pratyahaṃ saha mantribhiḥ ,
kṛtamantre mahāprājñe tajjñe daśarathe nṛpe 3
3. janyatrārtham ca putrāṇām pratyaham saha mantribhiḥ
kṛtamantre mahāprājñe tajjñe daśarathe nṛpe
3. And for the purpose of the birth of sons, daily, along with his ministers, when King Daśaratha, who was profoundly wise, knowledgeable in statecraft, and had thoroughly prepared his counsel, (was making plans).
कृतायां तीर्थयात्रायां रामो निजगृहे स्थितः ।
जगामानुदिनं कार्श्यं शरदीवामलं सरः ॥ ४ ॥
kṛtāyāṃ tīrthayātrāyāṃ rāmo nijagṛhe sthitaḥ ,
jagāmānudinaṃ kārśyaṃ śaradīvāmalaṃ saraḥ 4
4. kṛtāyām tīrthayātrāyām rāmaḥ nijagṛhe sthitaḥ
jagāma anudinam kārśyam śaradi iva amalam saraḥ
4. After the pilgrimage (tīrthayātrā) was completed, Rama, while staying in his own house, daily grew lean, like a clear lake that diminishes in autumn.
कुमारस्य विशालाक्षं पाण्डुतां मुखमाददे ।
पाकफुल्लदलं शुक्लं सालिमालमिवाम्बुजम् ॥ ५ ॥
kumārasya viśālākṣaṃ pāṇḍutāṃ mukhamādade ,
pākaphulladalaṃ śuklaṃ sālimālamivāmbujam 5
5. kumārasya viśālākṣam pāṇḍutām mukham ādade
pākaphulladalam śuklam sālimālam iva ambujam
5. The wide-eyed face of the prince assumed a pale hue, appearing like a white lotus with fully opened petals, surrounded by a swarm of bees.
कपोलतलसंलीनपाणिः पद्मासनस्थितः ।
चिन्तापरवशस्तूष्णीमव्यापारो बभूव ह ॥ ६ ॥
kapolatalasaṃlīnapāṇiḥ padmāsanasthitaḥ ,
cintāparavaśastūṣṇīmavyāpāro babhūva ha 6
6. kapolatalasaṃlīnapaṇiḥ padmāsanasthitaḥ
cintāparavaśaḥ tūṣṇīm avyāpāraḥ babhūva ha
6. Seated in the lotus posture, with his hands resting on his cheeks, he became silent and inactive, completely overcome by worry.
कृशाङ्गश्चिन्तया युक्तः खेदी परमदुर्मनाः ।
नोवाच कस्यचित्किंचिल्लिपिकर्मार्पितोपमः ॥ ७ ॥
kṛśāṅgaścintayā yuktaḥ khedī paramadurmanāḥ ,
novāca kasyacitkiṃcillipikarmārpitopamaḥ 7
7. kṛśāṅgaḥ cintayā yuktaḥ khedī paramadurmanāḥ
na uvāca kasyacit kiṃcit lipikarmārpitopamaḥ
7. Emaciated and filled with anxiety, sorrowful and extremely distressed in mind, he did not say anything to anyone, appearing like a painted figure.
खेदात्परिजनेनासौ प्रार्थ्यमानः पुनः पुनः ।
चकाराह्निकमाचारं परिम्लानमुखाम्बुजः ॥ ८ ॥
khedātparijanenāsau prārthyamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
cakārāhnikamācāraṃ parimlānamukhāmbujaḥ 8
8. khedāt parijanena asau prārthyamānaḥ punaḥ
punaḥ cakāra āhnikam ācāram parimlānamukhāmbujaḥ
8. Even though his lotus-like face was withered, he, being repeatedly implored by his attendants because of his distress, performed his daily observances.
एवंगुणविशिष्टं तं रामं गुणगणाकरम् ।
आलोक्य भ्रातरावस्य तामेवाययतुर्दशाम् ॥ ९ ॥
evaṃguṇaviśiṣṭaṃ taṃ rāmaṃ guṇagaṇākaram ,
ālokya bhrātarāvasya tāmevāyayaturdaśām 9
9. evam guṇaviśiṣṭam tam rāmam guṇagaṇākaram
ālokya bhrātarau asya tām eva āyayatuḥ daśām
9. Having seen Rama, who was distinguished by such qualities and was an ocean of virtues, his two brothers attained that very same distressed state.
तथा तेषु तनूजेषु खेदवत्सु कृशेषु च ।
सपत्नीको महीपालश्चिन्ताविवशतां ययौ ॥ १० ॥
tathā teṣu tanūjeṣu khedavatsu kṛśeṣu ca ,
sapatnīko mahīpālaścintāvivaśatāṃ yayau 10
10. tathā teṣu tanūjeṣu khedavatsu kṛśeṣu ca
sapatnīkaḥ mahīpālaḥ cintā-vivaśatām yayau
10. And so, as his sons became distressed and emaciated, the king, accompanied by his wife, fell into a state of intense anxiety.
का ते पुत्र घना चिन्तेत्येवं रामं पुनः पुनः ।
अपृच्छत्स्निग्धया वाचा नैवाकथयदस्य सः ॥ ११ ॥
kā te putra ghanā cintetyevaṃ rāmaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ,
apṛcchatsnigdhayā vācā naivākathayadasya saḥ 11
11. kā te putra ghanā cintā iti evam rāmam punaḥ punaḥ
apṛcchat snigdhayā vācā na eva akathayat asya saḥ
11. 'What is this deep anxiety, my son?' he asked Rāma repeatedly with an affectionate voice. But Rāma did not tell him anything.
न किंचित्तात मे दुःखमित्युक्त्वा पितुरङ्कगः ।
रामो राजीवपत्राक्षस्तूष्णीमेव स्म तिष्ठति ॥ १२ ॥
na kiṃcittāta me duḥkhamityuktvā pituraṅkagaḥ ,
rāmo rājīvapatrākṣastūṣṇīmeva sma tiṣṭhati 12
12. na kiṃcit tāta me duḥkham iti uktvā pituḥ aṅkagaḥ
rāmaḥ rājīva-patra-akṣaḥ tūṣṇīm eva sma tiṣṭhati
12. 'I have no sorrow (duḥkha) whatsoever, dear father,' having said this, Rāma, whose eyes resembled lotus petals, remained silently seated on his father's lap.
ततो दशरथो राजा रामः किं खेदवानिति ।
अपृच्छत्सर्वकार्यज्ञं वसिष्ठं वदतां वरम् ॥ १३ ॥
tato daśaratho rājā rāmaḥ kiṃ khedavāniti ,
apṛcchatsarvakāryajñaṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ vadatāṃ varam 13
13. tataḥ daśarathaḥ rājā rāmaḥ kim khedavān iti
apṛcchat sarva-kārya-jñam vasiṣṭham vadatām varam
13. Then King Daśaratha asked Vasiṣṭha, who knew all affairs and was the foremost among speakers, 'Why is Rāma distressed?'
इत्युक्तश्चिन्तयित्वा स वसिष्ठमुनिना नृपः ।
अस्त्यत्र कारणं श्रीमन्मा राजन्दुःखमस्तु ते ॥ १४ ॥
ityuktaścintayitvā sa vasiṣṭhamuninā nṛpaḥ ,
astyatra kāraṇaṃ śrīmanmā rājanduḥkhamastu te 14
14. iti uktaḥ cintayitvā sa vasiṣṭhamuninā nṛpaḥ asti
atra kāraṇam śrīman mā rājan duḥkham astu te
14. After being addressed thus by the sage Vasiṣṭha, that king (Rāma) pondered. (Then Vasiṣṭha continued): 'O glorious one, there is a reason for this. O king, let no sorrow trouble you.'
कोपं विषादकलनां विततं च हर्षं नाल्पेन कारणवशेन वहन्ति सन्तः ।
सर्गेण संहृतिजवेन विना जगत्यां भूतानि भूप न महान्ति विकारवन्ति ॥ १५ ॥
kopaṃ viṣādakalanāṃ vitataṃ ca harṣaṃ nālpena kāraṇavaśena vahanti santaḥ ,
sargeṇa saṃhṛtijavena vinā jagatyāṃ bhūtāni bhūpa na mahānti vikāravanti 15
15. kopam viṣādakalanām vitatam ca harṣam
na alpena kāraṇavaśena vahanti santaḥ
sargeṇa saṃhṛtijavena vinā jagatyām
bhūtāni bhūpa na mahānti vikāravanti
15. The wise do not experience anger, despondency, or extensive joy due to trivial reasons. O king, in this world, beings that are not great are prone to fluctuations (vikāra) even without the powerful events of creation or swift dissolution.
