श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
जीवोऽजीवो भवत्याशु याति चित्तमचित्तताम् ।
विचारादित्यविद्यान्तो मोक्ष इत्यभिधीयते ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca ,
jīvo'jīvo bhavatyāśu yāti cittamacittatām ,
vicārādityavidyānto mokṣa ityabhidhīyate 1
1. śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca jīvaḥ ajīvaḥ bhavati āśu yāti cittam
acittatām vicārāt iti avidyā antaḥ mokṣaḥ iti abhidhīyate
1. śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca.
vicārāt jīvaḥ āśu ajīvaḥ bhavati.
cittam acittatām yāti.
iti avidyā antaḥ mokṣaḥ iti abhidhīyate.
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: The individual soul (jīva) quickly becomes non-existent, and the mind (citta) attains mindlessness. This, the end of ignorance (avidyā) achieved through (self-)inquiry (vicāra), is called final liberation (mokṣa).
मृगतृष्णाजलमिव मनोऽहंतादि दृश्यते ।
असदेव मनागेव तद्विचारात्प्रलीयते ॥ २ ॥
mṛgatṛṣṇājalamiva mano'haṃtādi dṛśyate ,
asadeva manāgeva tadvicārātpralīyate 2
2. mṛgatṛṣṇājalam iva manaḥ ahaṃtā ādi dṛśyate
asat eva manāk eva tat vicārāt pralīyate
2. manaḥ ahaṃtā ādi mṛgatṛṣṇājalam iva dṛśyate.
(tat) asat eva.
manāk eva tat vicārāt pralīyate.
2. The mind, ego (ahaṃtā), and so on, appear like water in a mirage; they are indeed unreal, and merely by (self-)inquiry (vicāra), that (unreality) dissolves.
संसृतिस्वप्नविभ्रान्तौ वेतालोदाहृतानिमान् ।
प्रश्नानाकर्णय शुभान्प्रसङ्गात्स्मृतिमागतान् ॥ ३ ॥
saṃsṛtisvapnavibhrāntau vetālodāhṛtānimān ,
praśnānākarṇaya śubhānprasaṅgātsmṛtimāgatān 3
3. saṃsṛtisvapnavibhrāntau vetāla udāhṛtān imān
praśnān ākarṇaya śubhān prasaṅgāt smṛtim āgatān
3. ākarṇaya imān śubhān praśnān,
vetāla udāhṛtān,
prasaṅgāt smṛtim āgatān,
saṃsṛtisvapnavibhrāntau.
3. Listen to these auspicious questions, which were recounted by a Vetāla and have come to my memory by association, questions that pertain to the delusion of the dream of transmigratory existence (saṃsāra).
अस्ति विन्ध्यमहाटव्यां वेतालो विपुलाकृतिः ।
स किंचिन्मण्डलं गर्वादाजगाम जिघांसया ॥ ४ ॥
asti vindhyamahāṭavyāṃ vetālo vipulākṛtiḥ ,
sa kiṃcinmaṇḍalaṃ garvādājagāma jighāṃsayā 4
4. asti vindhyamahāṭavyām vetālaḥ vipulākṛtiḥ
saḥ kiñcit maṇḍalam garvāt ājagāma jighāṃsayā
4. vindhyamahāṭavyām vipulākṛtiḥ vetālaḥ asti
saḥ garvāt jighāṃsayā kiñcit maṇḍalam ājagāma
4. In the great forest of Vindhya, there is a Vetāla, a ghostly being of immense form. Out of pride, he came to a certain region with the intention to kill.
