श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा राजसिंहस्य वाक्यमद्भुतविस्तरम् ।
हृष्टरोमा महातेजा विश्वामित्रोऽभ्यभाषत ॥ १ ॥

Śrī Vālmīki spoke: Having heard that speech of the lion-like king, a statement of astonishing scope, the greatly radiant Viśvāmitra, with his hair bristling (in delight), then addressed him.
सदृशं राजशार्दूल तवैवैतन्महीतले ।
महावंशप्रसूतस्य वसिष्ठवशवर्तिनः ॥ २ ॥

sadṛśaṃ rājaśārdūla tavaivaitanmahītale ,
mahāvaṃśaprasūtasya vasiṣṭhavaśavartinaḥ 2

sadṛśam rāja-śārdūla tava eva etat mahī-tale
mahā-vaṃśa-prasūtasya vasiṣṭha-vaśa-vartinaḥ
mahā-vaṃśa-prasūtasya vasiṣṭha-vaśa-vartinaḥ
2.
O tiger among kings! This is indeed fitting for you alone on the earth, for one born in a great lineage and obedient to Vasiṣṭha.
यत्तु मे हृद्गतं वाक्यं तस्य कार्यविनिर्णयम् ।
कुरु त्वं राजशार्दूल धर्मं समनुपालय ॥ ३ ॥

yattu me hṛdgataṃ vākyaṃ tasya kāryavinirṇayam ,
kuru tvaṃ rājaśārdūla dharmaṃ samanupālaya 3

yat tu me hṛd-gatam vākyam tasya kārya-vinirṇayam
kuru tvam rāja-śārdūla dharmam samanu-pālaya
kuru tvam rāja-śārdūla dharmam samanu-pālaya
3.
But as for the request that is in my heart, O tiger among kings, please make a decision regarding that matter, and uphold the natural law (dharma).
अहं धर्मं समातिष्ठे सिद्धयर्थं पुरुषर्षभ ।
तस्य विघ्नकरा घोरा राक्षसा मम संस्थिताः ॥ ४ ॥

ahaṃ dharmaṃ samātiṣṭhe siddhayarthaṃ puruṣarṣabha ,
tasya vighnakarā ghorā rākṣasā mama saṃsthitāḥ 4

aham dharmam samātiṣṭhe siddhyartham puruṣarṣabha |
tasya vighnakarāḥ ghorāḥ rākṣasāḥ mama saṃsthitāḥ ||
tasya vighnakarāḥ ghorāḥ rākṣasāḥ mama saṃsthitāḥ ||
4.
O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), I am performing this sacred duty (dharma) for its successful completion. However, terrible rākṣasas are stationed here to obstruct it.
यदा यदा तु यज्ञेन यजेऽहं विबुधव्रजान् ।
तदा तदा तु मे यज्ञं विनिघ्नन्ति निशाचराः ॥ ५ ॥
तदा तदा तु मे यज्ञं विनिघ्नन्ति निशाचराः ॥ ५ ॥
yadā yadā tu yajñena yaje'haṃ vibudhavrajān ,
tadā tadā tu me yajñaṃ vinighnanti niśācarāḥ 5
tadā tadā tu me yajñaṃ vinighnanti niśācarāḥ 5

yadā yadā tu yajñena yaje aham vibudhavrajān |
tadā tadā tu me yajñam vinighnanti niśācarāḥ ||
tadā tadā tu me yajñam vinighnanti niśācarāḥ ||

Whenever I perform a sacred ritual (yajña) for the hosts of gods, then at that very time, the night-prowling rākṣasas (niśācarāḥ) obstruct my ritual (yajña).
बहुशो विहिते तस्मिन्मया राक्षसनायकाः ।
अकिरंस्ते महीं यागे मांसेन रुधिरेण च ॥ ६ ॥

bahuśo vihite tasminmayā rākṣasanāyakāḥ ,
akiraṃste mahīṃ yāge māṃsena rudhireṇa ca 6

bahuśaḥ vihite tasmin mayā rākṣasanāyakāḥ |
akiran te mahīm yāge māṃsena rudhireṇa ca ||

Even after that ritual (yajña) had been performed many times by me, the leaders of the rākṣasas (rākṣasanāyakāḥ) sprinkled the earth with flesh and blood during the sacred ritual (yajña).
अवधूते तथाभूते तस्मिन्यागकदम्बके ।
कृतश्रमो निरुत्साहस्तस्माद्देशादुपागतः ॥ ७ ॥

avadhūte tathābhūte tasminyāgakadambake ,

kṛtaśramaḥ nirutsāhaḥ tasmāt deśāt upāgataḥ ||

When that collection of rituals (yajña) was thus defiled, I became exhausted and disheartened, and so I departed from that place.
न च मे क्रोधमुत्स्रष्टुं बुद्धिर्भवति पार्थिव ।
तथाभूतं हि तत्कर्म न शापस्तस्य विद्यते ॥ ८ ॥

na ca me krodhamutsraṣṭuṃ buddhirbhavati pārthiva ,
tathābhūtaṃ hi tatkarma na śāpastasya vidyate 8

na ca me krodham utsraṣṭum buddhiḥ bhavati pārthiva
tathābhūtam hi tat karma na śāpaḥ tasya vidyate
tathābhūtam hi tat karma na śāpaḥ tasya vidyate
8.
O King, I am unable to abandon my anger. Indeed, that action (karma) was of such a nature that no curse can be applied to it.
ईदृशी यज्ञदीक्षा सा मम तस्मिन्महाक्रतौ ।
त्वत्प्रसादादविघ्नेन प्रापयेयं महाफलम् ॥ ९ ॥

īdṛśī yajñadīkṣā sā mama tasminmahākratau ,
tvatprasādādavighnena prāpayeyaṃ mahāphalam 9

tvatprasādāt avighnena prāpayeyam mahāphalam

Such is my consecration (dīkṣā) for that great ritual (yajña). By your grace, may I attain a great reward (mahāphalam) without any obstacles.
त्रातुमर्हसि मामार्तं शरणार्थिनमागतम् ।
अर्थिनां यन्निराशत्वं सत्तमेऽभिभवो हि सः ॥ १० ॥

trātumarhasi māmārtaṃ śaraṇārthinamāgatam ,
arthināṃ yannirāśatvaṃ sattame'bhibhavo hi saḥ 10

trātum arhasi mām ārtam śaraṇārthinam āgatam
arthinām yat nirāśatvam sattame abhibhavaḥ hi saḥ
arthinām yat nirāśatvam sattame abhibhavaḥ hi saḥ
10.
You ought to protect me, who am distressed and have come seeking refuge. O best among the virtuous, for the despair (nirāśatvam) of petitioners is indeed a defeat.
तवास्ति तनयः श्रीमान्दृप्तशार्दूलविक्रमः ।
महेन्द्रसदृशो वीर्ये रामो रक्षोविदारणः ॥ ११ ॥

tavāsti tanayaḥ śrīmāndṛptaśārdūlavikramaḥ ,
mahendrasadṛśo vīrye rāmo rakṣovidāraṇaḥ 11

tava asti tanayaḥ śrīmān dṛptaśārdūlavikramaḥ
mahendrasadṛśaḥ vīrye rāmaḥ rakṣovidāraṇaḥ
mahendrasadṛśaḥ vīrye rāmaḥ rakṣovidāraṇaḥ
11.
You have a glorious son, Rama, who possesses the valor of a fierce tiger, is equal to Mahendra (Indra) in might, and is the destroyer of rākṣasas.
तं पुत्रं राजशार्दूल रामं सत्यपराक्रमम् ।
काकपक्षधरं शूरं ज्येष्ठं मे दातुमर्हसि ॥ १२ ॥

taṃ putraṃ rājaśārdūla rāmaṃ satyaparākramam ,
kākapakṣadharaṃ śūraṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ me dātumarhasi 12
kākapakṣadharaṃ śūraṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ me dātumarhasi 12

tam putram rājaśārdūla rāmam satyaparākramam
kākapakṣadharam śūram jyeṣṭham me dātum arhasi
kākapakṣadharam śūram jyeṣṭham me dātum arhasi
12.
O tiger among kings, you should give me that eldest son, Rama, who possesses true valor, is heroic, and wears the ka-kakṣa (a style of hair worn by young boys).
शक्तो ह्येष मया गुप्तो दिव्येन स्वेन तेजसा ।
राक्षसा येऽपकर्तारस्तेषां मूर्धविनिग्रहे ॥ १३ ॥
राक्षसा येऽपकर्तारस्तेषां मूर्धविनिग्रहे ॥ १३ ॥
śakto hyeṣa mayā gupto divyena svena tejasā ,
rākṣasā ye'pakartārasteṣāṃ mūrdhavinigrahe 13
rākṣasā ye'pakartārasteṣāṃ mūrdhavinigrahe 13
13.
śaktaḥ hi eṣaḥ mayā guptaḥ divyena svena tejasā
rākṣasāḥ ye apakartāraḥ teṣām mūrdhavinigrahe
rākṣasāḥ ye apakartāraḥ teṣām mūrdhavinigrahe
13.
Indeed, this one is capable, protected by me with his own divine splendor, for the suppression of the heads of those rākṣasas (demons) who are causing trouble.
श्रेयश्चास्य करिष्यामि बहुरूपमनन्तकम् ।
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां येन पूज्यो भविष्यति ॥ १४ ॥

śreyaścāsya kariṣyāmi bahurūpamanantakam ,
trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ yena pūjyo bhaviṣyati 14

14.
śreyaḥ ca asya kariṣyāmi bahurūpam anantakam
trayāṇām api lokānām yena pūjyaḥ bhaviṣyati
trayāṇām api lokānām yena pūjyaḥ bhaviṣyati
14.
And I will bestow upon him manifold and endless good fortune, by which he will become revered even by all three worlds.
न च ते राममासाद्य स्थातुं शक्ता निशाचराः ।
क्रुद्धं केसरिणं दृष्ट्वा वनेरण इवैणकाः ॥ १५ ॥
क्रुद्धं केसरिणं दृष्ट्वा वनेरण इवैणकाः ॥ १५ ॥
na ca te rāmamāsādya sthātuṃ śaktā niśācarāḥ ,
kruddhaṃ kesariṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā vaneraṇa ivaiṇakāḥ 15
kruddhaṃ kesariṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā vaneraṇa ivaiṇakāḥ 15
15.
na ca te rāmam āsādya sthātum śaktāḥ niśācarāḥ
kruddham kesariṇam dṛṣṭvā vane araṇe iva eṇakāḥ
kruddham kesariṇam dṛṣṭvā vane araṇe iva eṇakāḥ
15.
And those night-roaming rākṣasas (demons) will not be able to stand their ground upon encountering Rama, just as deer in a barren forest cannot stand their ground upon seeing an enraged lion.
तेषां न चान्यः काकुत्स्थाद्योद्धुमुत्सहते पुमान् ।
ऋते केसरिणः क्रुद्धान्मत्तानां करिणामिव ॥ १६ ॥

teṣāṃ na cānyaḥ kākutsthādyoddhumutsahate pumān ,
ṛte kesariṇaḥ kruddhānmattānāṃ kariṇāmiva 16
ṛte kesariṇaḥ kruddhānmattānāṃ kariṇāmiva 16
16.
teṣām na ca anyaḥ kākutsthāt yoddhum utsahate
pumān ṛte kesariṇaḥ kruddhān mattānām kariṇām iva
pumān ṛte kesariṇaḥ kruddhān mattānām kariṇām iva
16.
No other man, apart from the scion of Kakutstha (Rama), dares to fight them, just as no one but a lion would dare to fight the enraged among the intoxicated elephants.
वीर्योत्सिक्ता हि ते पापाः कालकूटोपमा रणे ।
खरदूषणयोर्भृत्याः कृतान्ताः कुपिता इव ॥ १७ ॥

vīryotsiktā hi te pāpāḥ kālakūṭopamā raṇe ,
kharadūṣaṇayorbhṛtyāḥ kṛtāntāḥ kupitā iva 17
kharadūṣaṇayorbhṛtyāḥ kṛtāntāḥ kupitā iva 17
17.
vīrya utsiktāḥ hi te pāpāḥ kālakūṭa upamāḥ raṇe
khara dūṣaṇayoḥ bhṛtyāḥ kṛtāntāḥ kupitāḥ iva
khara dūṣaṇayoḥ bhṛtyāḥ kṛtāntāḥ kupitāḥ iva
17.
Indeed, those wicked ones, arrogant with their prowess, are like the kālakūṭa poison in battle. They are servants of Khara and Dūṣaṇa, like enraged agents of death.
रामस्य राजशार्दूल सहिष्यन्ते न सायकान् ।
अनारतगता धारा जलदस्येव पांसवः ॥ १८ ॥

rāmasya rājaśārdūla sahiṣyante na sāyakān ,
anāratagatā dhārā jaladasyeva pāṃsavaḥ 18

Oh tiger among kings (Rama), they will not endure Rama's arrows, just as dust particles cannot endure the continuous showers of a cloud.
न च पुत्रकृतं स्नेहं कर्तुमर्हसि पार्थिव ।
न तदस्ति जगत्यस्मिन्यन्न देयं महात्मनाम् ॥ १९ ॥
न तदस्ति जगत्यस्मिन्यन्न देयं महात्मनाम् ॥ १९ ॥
na ca putrakṛtaṃ snehaṃ kartumarhasi pārthiva ,
na tadasti jagatyasminyanna deyaṃ mahātmanām 19
na tadasti jagatyasminyanna deyaṃ mahātmanām 19

na ca putra kṛtam sneham kartum arhasi pārthiva
na tat asti jagati asmin yat na deyam mahātmanām
na tat asti jagati asmin yat na deyam mahātmanām
19.
And you should not show affection (sneha) for your son, oh king. There is nothing in this world that should not be given to great souls (mahātman).
हन्त नूनं विजानामि हतांस्तान्विद्धिराक्षसान् ।
नह्यस्मदादयः प्राज्ञाः संदिग्धे संप्रवृत्तयः ॥ २० ॥
नह्यस्मदादयः प्राज्ञाः संदिग्धे संप्रवृत्तयः ॥ २० ॥
hanta nūnaṃ vijānāmi hatāṃstānviddhirākṣasān ,
nahyasmadādayaḥ prājñāḥ saṃdigdhe saṃpravṛttayaḥ 20
nahyasmadādayaḥ prājñāḥ saṃdigdhe saṃpravṛttayaḥ 20
20.
hanta nūnam vijānāmi hatān tān viddhi rākṣasān na
hi asmadādayaḥ prājñāḥ saṃdigdhe saṃpravṛttayaḥ
hi asmadādayaḥ prājñāḥ saṃdigdhe saṃpravṛttayaḥ
20.
Alas, I certainly know that those rākṣasas are slain. Indeed, the undertakings of wise persons like us are not carried out with uncertainty.
अहं वेद्मि महात्मानं रामं राजीवलोचनम् ।
वसिष्ठश्च महातेजा ये चान्ये दीर्घदर्शिनः ॥ २१ ॥

ahaṃ vedmi mahātmānaṃ rāmaṃ rājīvalocanam ,
vasiṣṭhaśca mahātejā ye cānye dīrghadarśinaḥ 21
vasiṣṭhaśca mahātejā ye cānye dīrghadarśinaḥ 21

aham vedmi mahātmānam rāmam rājīvalocanam
vasiṣṭhaḥ ca mahātejāḥ ye ca anye dīrghadarśinaḥ
vasiṣṭhaḥ ca mahātejāḥ ye ca anye dīrghadarśinaḥ
21.
I know the great-souled (mahātman) Rāma, the lotus-eyed one. So too does the greatly effulgent Vasiṣṭha, and other far-sighted ones.
यदि धर्मो महत्त्वं च यशस्ते मनसि स्थितम् ।
तन्मह्यं समभिप्रेतमात्मजं दातुमर्हसि ॥ २२ ॥
तन्मह्यं समभिप्रेतमात्मजं दातुमर्हसि ॥ २२ ॥
yadi dharmo mahattvaṃ ca yaśaste manasi sthitam ,
tanmahyaṃ samabhipretamātmajaṃ dātumarhasi 22
tanmahyaṃ samabhipretamātmajaṃ dātumarhasi 22

yadi dharmaḥ mahattvam ca yaśaḥ te manasi sthitam
tat mahyam samabhipretam ātmajam dātum arhasi
tat mahyam samabhipretam ātmajam dātum arhasi
22.
If (natural law) dharma, greatness, and fame are indeed present in your mind, then you should give to me your son, who is very dear to me.
दशरात्रश्च मे यज्ञो यस्मिन्रामेण राक्षसाः ।
हन्तव्या विघ्नकर्तारो मम यज्ञस्य वैरिणः ॥ २३ ॥
हन्तव्या विघ्नकर्तारो मम यज्ञस्य वैरिणः ॥ २३ ॥
daśarātraśca me yajño yasminrāmeṇa rākṣasāḥ ,
hantavyā vighnakartāro mama yajñasya vairiṇaḥ 23
hantavyā vighnakartāro mama yajñasya vairiṇaḥ 23

daśarātraḥ ca me yajñaḥ yasmin rāmeṇa rākṣasāḥ
hantavyāḥ vighnakartāraḥ mama yajñasya vairiṇaḥ

23.
And my (yajña) sacrifice is for ten nights, during which the rākṣasas, the obstructors and enemies of my (yajña) sacrifice, ought to be slain by Rāma.
अत्राप्यनुज्ञां काकुत्स्थ ददतां तव मन्त्रिणः ।
वसिष्ठप्रमुखाः सर्वे तेन रामं विसर्जय ॥ २४ ॥
वसिष्ठप्रमुखाः सर्वे तेन रामं विसर्जय ॥ २४ ॥
atrāpyanujñāṃ kākutstha dadatāṃ tava mantriṇaḥ ,
vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ sarve tena rāmaṃ visarjaya 24
vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ sarve tena rāmaṃ visarjaya 24

atra api anujñām kākutstha dadatām tava mantriṇaḥ
vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ sarve tena rāmam visarjaya
vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ sarve tena rāmam visarjaya
24.
O scion of Kakutstha, let all your ministers, led by Vasishtha, also grant their permission in this matter. Therefore, send Rama away.
नात्येति कालः कालज्ञ यथायं मम राघव ।
तथा कुरुष्व भद्रं ते मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥ २५ ॥

nātyeti kālaḥ kālajña yathāyaṃ mama rāghava ,
tathā kuruṣva bhadraṃ te mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ 25
tathā kuruṣva bhadraṃ te mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ 25

na atyeti kālaḥ kālajña yathā ayam mama rāghava
tathā kuruṣva bhadram te mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ
tathā kuruṣva bhadram te mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ
25.
O knower of timing (kālajña), O scion of Raghu, this period is not passing by for me as it should. Therefore, act accordingly; may good fortune be yours; and do not set your mind (manas) on sorrow (śoka).
कार्यमण्वपि काले तु कृतमेत्युपकारताम् ।
महदप्युपकारोऽपि रिक्ततामेत्यकालतः ॥ २६ ॥

kāryamaṇvapi kāle tu kṛtametyupakāratām ,
mahadapyupakāro'pi riktatāmetyakālataḥ 26

kāryam aṇu api kāle tu kṛtam eti upakāratām
mahat api upakāraḥ api riktatām eti akālataḥ
mahat api upakāraḥ api riktatām eti akālataḥ
26.
Indeed, even a small task (kārya) performed at the right time becomes beneficial. But even a great assistance (upakāra), if rendered at the wrong time, becomes useless.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा धर्मात्मा धर्मार्थसहितं वचः ।
विरराम महातेजा विश्वामित्रो मुनीश्वरः ॥ २७ ॥

Having spoken thus, Vishwamitra, the virtuous (dharmātman) and highly effulgent (mahātejas) chief of sages (munīśvara), ceased (virarāma) his speech, which was imbued with both righteousness (dharma) and purpose.
श्रुत्वा वचो मुनिवरस्य महानुभावस्तूष्णीमतिष्ठदुपपन्नपदं स वक्तुम् ।
नो युक्तियुक्तकथनेन विनैति तोषं धीमानपूरितमनोऽभिमतश्च लोकः ॥ २८ ॥
नो युक्तियुक्तकथनेन विनैति तोषं धीमानपूरितमनोऽभिमतश्च लोकः ॥ २८ ॥
śrutvā vaco munivarasya mahānubhāvastūṣṇīmatiṣṭhadupapannapadaṃ sa vaktum ,

Having heard the words of the excellent sage, the highly esteemed one remained silent, about to speak fitting words. For, an intelligent person whose mind's desires remain unfulfilled does not attain satisfaction without a logical explanation.
