श्रीराम उवाच ।
अविद्या दृश्यरूपेयं कचन्ती यस्य विद्यते ।
चिन्नभःस्वप्ननगरी दृश्यमानापि शून्यकम् ॥ १ ॥

Śrī Rāma said: 'This ignorance (avidyā), which manifests as the visible world, appears to one in whom it exists. It is like a dream city in the sky of consciousness (cit), which, though seen, is ultimately void.'
तस्याज्ञस्य कियत्कालं किंरूपा स्यात्किमात्मिका ।
कियती सा च वेत्येवं मुने मे कथ्यतां पुनः ॥ २ ॥

tasyājñasya kiyatkālaṃ kiṃrūpā syātkimātmikā ,

O sage, please tell me again about that ignorance (avidyā) of the ignorant one: for how long does it exist, what is its form, what is its nature, and what is its extent?
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
अविद्या विद्यते येषामज्ञानां भूतलादिका ।
तेषामस्यां ब्रह्मणीव नास्त्यन्तोऽत्र कथां श्रृणु ॥ ३ ॥

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Listen to this account. For those ignorant individuals in whom ignorance (avidyā) exists, leading them to perceive the world as real (bhūtalādikā), there is no end to this state, just as there is no end to Brahman (brahman) itself.
सदृशं जगतोऽस्यास्ति क्वचिदम्बरकोणके ।
कस्मिंश्चिद्त्रिजगत्किंचिदनयैव व्यवस्थया ॥ ४ ॥

Similar to this world, there exists somewhere, in some corner of space, another triple world, structured by this very same principle.
अस्ति कश्चिद्भुवो भागो भूषणं तत्र भूस्थितेः ।
पुरी ततमितिर्नाम्ना सुव्यक्तकलनाऽवनौ ॥ ५ ॥

There is a certain region on earth, which serves as an adornment to its very existence. In that region, there is a city named Tatamiti, whose structures are clearly defined on the ground.
तत्रासीत्पार्थिवः कश्चिद्विपश्चिदिति विश्रुतः ।
यः सभायां सुसभ्यायां विपश्चित्त्वाद्विराजते ॥ ६ ॥

There was a certain king, renowned by the name of Vipaścit. He shone brilliantly in the noble assembly due to his profound scholarship.
राजहंस इवाब्जिन्यामृक्षचक्र इवोडुराट् ।
सुमेरुरिव शैलौघे यः सभायामराजत ॥ ७ ॥

rājahaṃsaḥ iva abjinyām ṛkṣacakre iva uḍurāṭ

yaḥ sabhāyām rājahaṃsaḥ iva abjinyām uḍurāṭ
iva ṛkṣacakre sumeruḥ iva śailaughe arājata

He shone in the assembly like a royal swan (rājahaṃsa) in a lotus pond, like the moon (uḍurāṭ) among the constellations (ṛkṣacakra), and like Mount Sumeru (sumeru) among a multitude of mountains.
निवर्तते यतोऽशक्त्या वचनं गुणवर्णनात् ।
कवीनामचलाकारा भवेद्भा भूधरो यथा ॥ ८ ॥
कवीनामचलाकारा भवेद्भा भूधरो यथा ॥ ८ ॥
nivartate yato'śaktyā vacanaṃ guṇavarṇanāt ,
kavīnāmacalākārā bhavedbhā bhūdharo yathā 8

From whom the words of poets turn back due to their inability to describe his virtues; his splendor (bhā) would be like an unmoving form, like a mountain (bhūdhara).
प्रातःप्रातर्विकसितात्सर्वाशाभासनोद्यतात् ।
यतः प्रतापजनितश्रीरुदेत्यम्बुजादिव ॥ ९ ॥

From whom, who blooms (shines forth) every morning and strives to illuminate all directions, the splendor born of valor rises, as if from a lotus (ambuja).
स ब्रह्मण्यमतिर्मानी वह्निमेवाधिदैवतम् ।
अपूजयत्समं भक्त्या देव वेत्ति स्म नेतरम् ॥ १० ॥

sa brahmaṇyamatirmānī vahnimevādhidaivatam ,
apūjayatsamaṃ bhaktyā deva vetti sma netaram 10

saḥ brahmaṇya-matiḥ mānī vahnim eva adhidaivatam
apūjayat samam bhaktyā devam vetti sma na itaram
apūjayat samam bhaktyā devam vetti sma na itaram

saḥ brahmaṇya-matiḥ mānī vahnim eva adhidaivatam
samam bhaktyā apūjayat devam itaram na vetti sma

He, reverent and deeply devoted to Brahmins, worshipped Agni alone as his supreme deity. He knew no other god and worshipped with sincere devotion (bhakti).
समत्स्यमकरव्यूहा गजवाजिगणान्विताः ।
आवर्तचक्रव्यूहाढ्याः कल्लोलबलमालिताः ॥ ११ ॥

samatsyamakaravyūhā gajavājigaṇānvitāḥ ,

sa-matsya-makara-vyūhāḥ gaja-vāji-gaṇa-anvitāḥ
āvarta-cakra-vyūha-āḍhyāḥ kallola-bala-mālitāḥ
āvarta-cakra-vyūha-āḍhyāḥ kallola-bala-mālitāḥ
11.
sa-matsya-makara-vyūhāḥ gaja-vāji-gaṇa-anvitāḥ

They (the oceans, to which the ministers are compared) had formations of fish and crocodiles; they were accompanied by multitudes of elephants and horses; they were abundant with formations resembling whirlpools and circular arrays; and they were adorned with the power of their waves.
मर्यादापालने युक्ता अकम्पनबलाधिकाः ।
मन्त्रिष्वप्यस्य चत्वारो दिक्षु सत्सागरा इव ॥ १२ ॥

maryādāpālane yuktā akampanabalādhikāḥ ,

maryādā-pālane yuktāḥ akampana-bala-adhikāḥ
mantriṣu api asya catvāraḥ dikṣu sat-sāgarāḥ iva

asya catvāraḥ mantriṣu api maryādā-pālane yuktāḥ
akampana-bala-adhikāḥ dikṣu sat-sāgarāḥ iva
akampana-bala-adhikāḥ dikṣu sat-sāgarāḥ iva
12.
His four ministers were engaged in upholding the natural law (maryādā) and possessed immense, unwavering strength (bala). They were, in the four directions, like good oceans.
तैरशेषककुप्चक्रनाभिराभासितावनिः ।
आसीत्सुदुर्जयो जेता स सुदर्शनचक्रवत् ॥ १३ ॥

tairaśeṣakakupcakranābhirābhāsitāvaniḥ ,

taiḥ aśeṣa-kakup-cakra-nābhiḥ ābhāsita-avaniḥ

taiḥ saḥ aśeṣa-kakup-cakra-nābhiḥ ābhāsita-avaniḥ
su-durjayaḥ jetā sudarśana-cakra-vat āsīt
su-durjayaḥ jetā sudarśana-cakra-vat āsīt
13.
Through them (the ministers), the earth, whose center was the entire circle of directions, was made splendid. That king became an unconquerable victor, like the Sudarshana (cakra).
तमेकदा ययौ पूर्वदिङ्मुखाच्चतुरश्चरः ।
स उवाच रहो रंहोगतिघोराक्षरं वचः ॥ १४ ॥

ekadā caturaḥ caraḥ pūrvadiṅmukhāt tam yayau.
saḥ rahaḥ raṃhogatighorākṣaram vacaḥ uvāca.

14.
One day, a clever spy came to him from the eastern direction. He spoke to him in secret, delivering dreadful news concerning a swift movement (of events).
देव दोर्द्रुमविश्रान्तधरागोबन्धनाच्युत ।
श्रूयतां मन्मुखात्पश्चाद्यथाप्राप्तं विधीयताम् ॥ १५ ॥

O Lord, O Acyuta, who bound the earth, (which was) like a cow resting upon the tree of your arm! Let (what is to be said) be heard from my mouth, and afterwards, let what is appropriate be done.
पूर्वदिङ्मुखसामन्तो ज्वरेणास्तमुपागतः ।
मन्ये जेतुं यमं यातस्त्वयारब्धो जितारिणा ॥ १६ ॥
मन्ये जेतुं यमं यातस्त्वयारब्धो जितारिणा ॥ १६ ॥
pūrvadiṅmukhasāmanto jvareṇāstamupāgataḥ ,
manye jetuṃ yamaṃ yātastvayārabdho jitāriṇā 16

pūrvadiṅmukhasāmantaḥ jvareṇa astam upāgataḥ |
manye jetum yamam yātaḥ tvayā ārabdhaḥ jitāriṇā ||

pūrvadiṅmukhasāmantaḥ jvareṇa astam upāgataḥ.
(aham) manye,
jitāriṇā tvayā ārabdhaḥ (san),
(saḥ) yamam jetum yātaḥ.

(saḥ) yamam jetum yātaḥ.
16.
The feudal lord of the eastern region has succumbed to a fever. I think he has gone to conquer Yama (the god of death), a feat initiated by you, the vanquisher of your foes.
तस्मिन्समन्ततो जेतुं दक्षिणापथनायकः ।
पूर्वापराभ्यामाक्रम्य बलाभ्यामरिणाऽऽहतः ॥ १७ ॥

tasminsamantato jetuṃ dakṣiṇāpathanāyakaḥ ,

tasmin samantataḥ jetum dakṣiṇāpathanāyakaḥ |

dakṣiṇāpathanāyakaḥ tasmin samantataḥ jetum,
pūrvāparābhyām balābhyām ākramya,
ariṇā āhataḥ.

17.
To conquer completely that (eastern) region, the ruler of the southern path, having attacked with both eastern and western forces, was (himself) struck down by an enemy.
तस्मिन्मृते समागम्य यावद्वारुणदिक्पतिः ।
बलेनायाति ककुभौ ते समादातुमादृतः ॥ १८ ॥

Upon his death, the lord of the western direction, Vāruṇa, having gathered his army, eagerly advanced with his forces to conquer those two regions.

However, just as he was on his way, accompanied by the kings of the eastern regions and the rulers of the southern path, he (Vāruṇa) was killed in battle by his enemies midway.

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, as he was speaking thus, another messenger, agitated by urgency, entered the palace like the overwhelming force of a sudden flood.
चर उवाच ।
उत्तराशाबलाध्यक्षो देवारिभिरुपद्रुतः ।

The messenger said: 'The commander of the northern region's army, harassed by the enemies of the gods (devāris), is coming here with his forces, like a surge of water from a broken dam.'
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
इति श्रुत्वा महीपालः कालक्षेपमवास्तवम् ।
मन्यमान उवाचेदं निर्गच्छन्वरमन्दिरात् ॥ २२ ॥

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having heard this, the king, considering the delay improper, said this as he departed from the magnificent palace.

Having equipped the king's feudatories, let the ministers also be summoned. Let the armory be opened, and let fearsome weapons be issued.

Let armors be fastened upon bodies, and let the infantry soldiers arrive. Let the troops be counted quickly, and let excellent arrangements be made.

And let military chiefs be appointed, and let spies be sent everywhere. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: While the king was speaking thus, filled with urgency and agitation...

The doorkeeper, having entered with an agitated yet respectful demeanor, said this: "O King, the commander of the northern direction's forces stands at the door. He desires an audience with Your Majesty, the lord of lords, just as a lotus yearns for the sight of the sun."

The king said, "Go without delay and admit him immediately. We shall then come to know what has happened in the distant quarters of the world by hearing his account."

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: "When this was spoken, the king saw the commander of the northern direction – who had been admitted by the doorkeeper and was profoundly intent on offering prostrations – standing before him."

(The king saw him) whose entire body was wounded and torn, with injuries continuously spread throughout his limbs. He was agitated, gasping for breath, vomiting blood, and though possessed of courage, he was overcome by weakness.

Having bowed, he quickly spoke this introductory statement, restraining his bodily pain and gasping with continuous breaths.

The Commander (balādhyakṣaḥ) said: "O Lord, even the three guardians of the directions (dikpālāḥ), along with a large army, have gone to Yama's city (yamapuram) to conquer Yama, as if by your command."

Therefore, many kings, pursuing me who am unable to protect that region and similar duties, have forcefully arrived here.

A great enemy army has reached this region (maṇḍalam) of Your Majesty. Let whatever is necessary be done, for there is nothing unconquerable for Your Majesty.

Sri Vasistha said: Then, while he (Bhagīratha), distressed and desiring to fight, was speaking thus, another man suddenly entered and spoke this.

O King (nareśvara), the enemy forces (aribalāni) of this region (asya maṇḍalasya), [comprising] vast numbers of soldiers (puruṣāḥ vipulāḥ), are deployed with swift formations (dala-līlayā), strongly (uccaiḥ sthitāni) in all four directions (catur-dikkam).

Our land (naḥ bhūmiḥ) has been surrounded (valitā) by enemies (aribhiḥ), whose multitude of flashing discus, maces, spears, and lances glitter like a forest (kacac-cakra-gadā-prāsa-kunta-kānana-kāntibhiḥ), just as if (iva) it were encircled by the ranges (taṭaiḥ) of the Lokāloka mountain.

There (tatra), chariots (rathāḥ), thronged with (ākulāḥ) moving retinues (calat-parikara) and presenting a spectacle (raṅgāḥ) of banners (patākā), weapons (āyudha), and warriors (yodha), advance (visaranti) like the masses (aughavat) of the flying cities of Tripura (proḍḍīna-tripura).

Raising their trunks into the sky, appearing like a forest of flesh-trees, the elephant formations roar like masses of monsoon clouds.

O Lord, I, being instructed by my master, have come to make this request: therefore, you should proceed from the border outpost of the territory for battle.

O divine one, I shall go to him, accompanied by my power (śakti), spears, and arrows. All that I have reported here, the divine one knows what comes next.

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Having spoken thus and offered his obeisance, he swiftly departed, just like a wave of the ocean that, after making a gurgling sound, subsides into stillness.

The king's palace became like a great forest agitated by a fierce wind, filled with a bewildered multitude of ministers, kings, warriors, officials, elephants, women, chariots, horses, attendants, and citizens, and with collections of weapons uplifted due to their own fear.
